Timor-Leste’s Atauro Island and Indigo Shire Council.

Now an incorporated entity, the friendship group has kept forging ahead, with 17 young people going through its scholarship student program since its inception to study at tertiary institutions.

The scholarship program is one of two projects, with the other an essential composting toilet program, but the committee responds to other needs when requested.

150th celebrations to commence in Rutherglen RUTHERGLEN Historical Society will tomorrow celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Rutherglen Common School, as the organisation kick starts a week of acknowledgement of the region’s history.

Commencing at 10am tomorrow, Rutherglen Historical Society president Julie Taylor will introduce a number of special guests,

including the descendants of inaugural head teacher Allan Knox Buckley and bride Agnes Binsted.

The Murray Street school, which now serves as a museum, was first opened in January 1873 with an initial enrolment of 84 children, before operating alongside the Rutherglen state school which commenced operation in 1909.

In the early 1960s, the school was used as a home economics and woodwork room to support the local secondary school, before falling into disuse in 1963.

The building was formally opened as a museum in October 1985, following extensive repair at the hands of local community members.

Ms Taylor said she was

proud to continue welcoming locals and visitors to explore the history of the region through the museum.

“The Rutherglen Historical Society committee and members have worked tirelessly to present the 150th anniversary celebrations to the people of Rutherglen,” she said.

“We are delighted to be celebrating this momen-

tous occasion with the community of Rutherglen - to be celebrating 150 years of continuous education in Rutherglen is incredibly fitting.

“Our current members are exceptional; they are an enthusiastic and dedicated group of individuals, with a positive outlook.

“I would encourage those who are seeking informa-

tion about joining the Rutherglen Historical Society to speak with our membership team on the day who will be happy to attend to any questions - the RHS has a very exciting future ahead.”

The free event will also include a community morning tea, before guests are invited to meander through the museum.

Memories made at national jamboree

By CORAL COOKSLEY SIX Girl Guides from Indigo Shire are among more than 1,000 girls from around the nation attending this week’s jamboree in Ballarat.

Jordi Williams and Abbey McLean (both 12), as well Bella Hartshorn (11) from Middle Indigo Primary School Girl Guides joined Chiltern Girl Guides’ Bridget Auranaune (11), Lola Schultz and Ruby Brough (both 12) to head to Ballarat last Sunday for the week-long adventure.

The National Girl Guide jamboree ‘Kani-Karrung’ - a Wadawurrung (traditional landowners) word meaning “women camping together” - is being held in Ballarat’s Victoria Park.

Guide leader for both groups in Chiltern and at the Middle Indigo Primary School, Lynne Emblin, said the entire park had been fenced off for the event.

“Being held in our home state is great

for us as the girls are young and have never been to such a large camp,” she said.

“It will give them confidence to travel when the jamboree is hosted by another state in 2026.”

The event, with a jam-packed program of adventure and new experiences, is for girls aged between of 10 and 18 years old.

In the lead up to the jamboree, Lynne said the guides had to learn some camp skills in preparation for the event as well as spend a minimum of three nights away at a camp.

With numerous activities on offer, the girls will enjoy hiking, canoeing, theatre arts and archery.

“It’s a fun event which builds lasting networking relationships and friendships as well as self-confidence and teamwork, and develops leadership skills among many other skills learned too,” Lynne said.

From page 1 Libby said the trio visited Timor-Lestes’s capital city of Dili to meet some of the students studying there.

“Twelve of those 17 students studied in areas such as teaching, engineering, information technology and nursing are now working,” she said.

Libby said committee members aim to visit Atauro Island once a year to meet face-to-face.

Rewarding to see 17 students go through the scholarship program, Libby said those young people are now paying for their siblings to be educated.

“Timor-Leste is a developing country and one of the poorest in the world

with little infrastructure where people on the Atauro Island are still subsistence farming in agriculture and fishing,” she said.

Libby said building capacity through education helps people come out of the poverty cycle as they learn skills, can seek employment and contribute to their community.

“The country needs support from Australia at the grassroots level as it’s often ordinary people who miss out and we’re helping young people in a small sustainable way,” she said.

“We’ll continue to do that with the support of our sponsors and Indigo Shire residents.

“Our committee couldn’t

do what we do without our supporters.”

The friendship group sponsors two students every year with local sponsoring too as well as donations received by the group.

While education as well as people learning the English language is vital for the future, Libby said continuing the composting toilet program will remain ongoing too.

‘We would love to increase numbers in the student scholarship program but have financial constraints,” she said.

As funds diminished from COVID-19 impacting the group’s fundraising activities, opportunities exist for new sponsors.

“Six out of eight students currently in our program don’t have laptops,” she said.

To help boost the Atauro Island’s economy and strengthen relationships between the shire and Atauro Island, local resident Dr Rick Thwaites and Libby are planning a tour to the island around the end of April this year for Indigo Shire residents and friends.

British Royal reply to telegram

By CORAL COOKSLEY SURPRISED Beechworth Telegraph Station volunteer morsecodians Leo Nette and Jim Mitchell received an appreciative reply last Friday to a telegram sent to King Charles on September 11 last year.

“We got our heads together to send a telegram to the King offering our condolences on the passing of his mother Queen Elizabeth,” Mr Nette said.

A morse code message had been tapped to a colleague in the Bendigo city suburb of Eaglehawk to transcribe into a telegram then sent to Buckingham Palace in England by post.

“We weren’t too sure we had the right protocol but we were not expecting a reply.”

The pair as well as other delighted team members at the historic telegraph station - a well-visited tourist attraction - send telegrams all over the world.

Mr Nette said with publicity about the town’s rare telegraph operation, he hoped King Charles may visit the telegraph station during his planned travels to Australia in 2024.

Built in 1858, the telegraph station - part of the Beechworth Historic and Cultural Precinct - linked the town to the world through morse code in its days of its telegraphic operation.

With the telegraph station supported by the international Morse code fraternity, people can still send outdated telegrams around Australia or overseas with the help of local experts such as Mr Nette, Mr Mitchell and the team.

“This equipment basically represents what was used 170 years ago and is what we used to communicate with the King,” Mr Nette said.

“We don’t have direct communications anymore, because all the telegraph wires are gone and we don’t

have access to all the submarine cables anymore so we tap the message out with acombination of the phone line.”

Mr Nette said Jack Morrow, the grandson of one the telegraphic operators, Bill Morrow, who had worked in Melbourne’s central office, made a documentary film in 2017 about the history of telegraphic operations in Australia called ‘Keeping It Alive.’

“His grandfather, another earlier telegraphist, and I are featured and Jack talks about the overland telegraph line too,” he said.

“The 20 minute film made

Mr Nette said visitors to the telegraph station, particularly younger people, have a great opportunity to see how communication worked way back in the early days, even as far back as in the 1850s.

Republic Day to celebrate community inclusion

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN THE North East Multicultural Association (NEMA) is calling on the community to help celebrate Indian Republic Day on Saturday, January 21 at the Bishop’s Residence Garden in Cusack Street, Wangaratta.

Republic Day is one of three Indian national holidays and it commemorates the enactment of the constitution of India, which occurred on January 26, 1950.

NEMA will celebrate Republic Day on the previous Saturday to avoid clashing with Australia Day celebrations.

NEMA outreach worker, Susan Ingleton, said traditional celebra-

tions include parades, cultural programs and private parties throughout the country.

“For the Indians living here it’s important they can celebrate Republic Day and feel like they’re appreciated within their new culture as well as their old culture,” she said.

“People can feel like they belong here, but can celebrate their heritage, something people from India have been doing since childhood and it’s an important day in their calendar.”

Everyone is welcome to join the celebrations from at 11:30am at the garden, where the Republic flag will be raised at midday by Padma

Ayyagari, followed by the singing of national anthem and traditional songs.

Ms Ingleton said NEMA want to make the traditional day an inclusive event for the whole community.

“The fact we can all share it is an exciting time, it’s like if we lived overseas we would like to celebrate Australia Day because it’s part of our Australian culture,” she said.

“It’s important the Indian population get together, have a picnic, raise the flag and sing the national anthem.”

People are encouraged to wear traditional clothing and to bring a picnic lunch and a picnic rug, and there will be activities for children.

No longer do we join in joyous celebration under the clock to count in the New Year, with kisses!

Some 70 years of looking up to check the time is a hard habit for me to break so it’s no wonder I’m cranky.

The Heritage Police prevented the building of a ramp into the post office.

If I decided to paint a heritage home in suffragette colours, (purple, green and white), they’d be all over me like a swarm of bees, and rightly so.

Local residents urged to get involved with U3A

By CORAL COOKSLEY COMMUNITY members from around the shire have a chance to find out what’s on offer from U3A at the group’s enrolment event being held in the Beechworth Servicemen’s Memorial Hall next Tuesday.

President Rosemary Ryan said attendees will be able to chat to tutors and group leaders in their fields of expertise.

“Information will be on hand to take away as well,” she said.

With a huge range of benefits in belonging to the 137-strong member organisation, Rosemary said among them was keeping people active in their areas of interest.

“It gives people opportunities to join in activities such as bike or walking groups and many other available programs as well as giving people social connections,” she said.

“We also invite members to contribute with their ideas for courses as well as being presenters in

their own areas of interest as we’re always looking for more courses to offer”.

Members can share their skills and knowledge with other members by organising courses, delivering presentations or leading group activities.

“It may not necessarily be something that a member has done in their working life but could be a topic they’re passionate about and would like to share that skill,’ Rosemary said.

Rosemary said U3A programs, which are run to Victorian school term dates, were offered every day throughout the week but there were some programs held during the summer school holidays.

Among close to 30 programs and activities held weekly, fortnightly, monthly or one-off presentations, some of the popular activities are the e-bike group and scribblers session.

A series of lectures known as ‘background briefings’ that stretch from the Roman Empire

to international trade to current affairs history are a big hit too.

Some presentations marked for February include ‘Birds and Other Local Wildlife’ to be delivered by local ecologist Dr Richard Loyn, while in March, federal member for Indi, Dr Helen Haines, will present a talk on her parliamentary life.

Despite being based in Beechworth, U3A caters for residents across Indigo Shire, offeirng a number of program sessions at the Yackandandah Community Centre.

With recent renovations to the old railway station where most sessions are held, Rosemary said U3A had been able to expand its programs.

While many existing members have already enrolled, Rosemary said she is expecting a good turnout on enrolment day between 10am and 2.30pm.

Local region prepares for Australia Day celebrations

By CORAL COOKSLEY AS COMMUNITIES around Indigo Shire gear up to celebrate Australia day next week, Beechworth organisers placed a banner to promote the event at the Town Hall Gardens in Loch Street on Tuesday.

Hosted by the local Rotary and Lions clubs, CWA, and Beechworth 1st Scouts, a free community breakfast at 8am is being offered for everyone to come along and enjoy next Thursday.

Rotarian Jim Fiford said a short ceremony starting at 9am will follow with councillor Larry Goldsworthy presenting Australia Day awards to local recipients to mark their community contributions, with Nathan Cowan from Billson’s Brewery as guest speaker.

Mr Fiford said the day brought people together as a community celebrating the wonderful country with its many opportunities.

“When we look around and see the problems in the world, we’re very fortunate to have our multicultural society in Australia, and the high degree of cooperation that we have with different cultures throughout the nation,” he said.

“I think Australia is somewhat of a leader in the world in that regard when you look at some of the other countries.”

Lions treasurer Christine Luckman said it was a time to also reflect on the country’s past, not from a negative perspective, but what can be built upon.

Tangambalanga Lions Club’s Peter Croucher said the day was a great community event on the calendar where everyone can get to celebrate Australia with its multicultural society.

He said guest speaker will be ABC Goulburn Murray’s chief of staff and mornings presenter Gaye Pattison, with other speakers from the Lions’ junior public speaking program as well as youth of the year.

To be held at 11am in the Kiewa Memorial Park on Kiewa East Road, the Kiewa-Tangambalanga Lions’ Club will host a community lunch and local

musician Erik Thompson will entertain the crowd.

A community barbeque breakfast will be held at 7.30am at the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall in High Street with award presentations while Chiltern will have a community morning tea hosted by the Chiltern Girl Guides.

The Chiltern event, held at the Tourist Park in Main Street at 9.45am, will have entertainment and awards presentations.

The Rotary Club of Rutherglen will host a community breakfast in the town starting at 7.45am at the Lions Park in Douglas Street where there will also be entertainment and awards presentations.

Hosted by the Yackandandah Lions Club, a community barbeque will be held with an 8am start at Sir Isaacs Park, Isaacs Avenue where there will be awards presentation, entertainment and live music.

A community barbeque hosted by the Wahgunyah Progress Association is being held in Wahgunyah at 9.30am in Willows Recreation Reserve in Wahgunyah where there are award presentations too.

The awards celebrate the contribution of individuals, community organisations and businesses in the region with the Australia Day events as well as awards supported by Indigo Shire Council.

Murray Valley encephalitis detected in Indigo Shire

HEALTH authorities have urged North East residents to remain vigilant in limiting their exposure to mosquitoes this summer, following a detection of the Murray Valley encephalitis virus in an Indigo Shire mosquito last week.

First trapped on January 10, testing of the mosquito later identified the virus, following a number of other detections throughout northern Victoria earlier this month, particularly in Loddon and Mildura shires.

Health department warns against mosquito exposure this summer The detection follows a number of Barmah Forest Virus and Ross River Virus detections in mosquitoes across northern Victoria earlier this month, as well as the state’s first detection of the rare Japanese encephalitis virus in Campaspe Shire in late December.

A Department of Health warning issued by deputy chief health officer Deborah Friedman indicated concern around the rise of Murray Valley encephalitis within

the mosquito population, and said increased detections posed a “current and active” risk to people in northern Victoria.

The state’s first detection of the virus in mosquitoes more than a decade occurred in Mildura on January 4, while a human has not reported being infected by the disease in Victoria since 1974.

Murray Valley encephalitis can cause a rare but potentially serious infection of the central nervous

system, with symptoms characterised by fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and muscle aches.

In most cases, infected people do not exhibit symptoms.

The alert issued by Ms Friedman urged anyone exhibiting symptoms to seek urgent medical care, while also calling on clinicians to test for mosquito-borne disease in patients with a compatible illness.

The virus is untreatable, with

health officials urging local residents to limit their exposure to mosquitoes in the first instance, by wearing long, loose-fitting clothes and using mosquito repellents if outside during periods with large numbers of mosquitoes.

It’s part of a global initiative that helps you investigate soil health and potential contaminants in your garden so you can work out the best use

for your patch of paradise.

EPA’s chief environmental scientist, Professor Mark Patrick Taylor, said GardenSafe was a great way to dig a little deeper into your soil.

“If you are growing fruit and vegetables at home, you should use GardenSafe to check what is under the surface of your seedlings. The only cost to you is the postage,” Professor Taylor said.

“Our scientists assess each sample they get for trace elements and general soil quality indicators, including soil texture, composition, nutri-

ents and organic carbon,” he said.

“As a science-based regulator we need this data.

“The findings from GardenSafe help us to build an understanding of potential contamination levels in residential gardens across Victoria. This information will help gardeners better understand what’s in their soil.

It will also help to reduce potential risk and exposure if soil contamination is present.”

GardenSafe data will not be used for EPA compliance

or enforcement activities.

“As a partnership between EPA Victoria and members of the community, GardenSafe is a great example of how we can work together, after all, the environment is everyone’s business,” he said.

Victorians can send the GardenSafe team three soil samples from their gardens.

They must be from a residential property.

EPA scientists will analyse the samples and provide a short report detailing the results and how to interpret them.

Calls to remain ‘waterwise’ despite wet year for region

THE region’s water authority is encouraging residents to actively use ‘waterwise’ tips despite storages looking healthy and water usage by consumers over the last two years dropping below the 5-year average.

Beechworth residents used 576 megalitres during 2022, up on the 561ML in 2021 but less than the five year average of 594ML. “We’re not surprised that

La Nina typically increases the chance of above average rainfall for northern and eastern Australia during summer.

Minister appoints former Indi MP Cathy McGowan as AgriFutures Australia chair FORMER independent MP for Indi Cathy McGowan has been appointed chairperson of the AgriFutures Australia Board by Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Murray Watt.

Ms McGowan is a sixthgeneration farmer from North East Victoria and has held various leadership roles of rural and regional organisations, including as president of Australian

Women in Agriculture.

Ms McGowan was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia in 2004 and was elected and served in the Australian Parliament as the Indi federal MP from 2013 to 2019.

AgriFutures Australia managing director John Harvey welcomed Ms McGowan to the role.

“Ms McGowan joins AgriFutures Australia at an

exciting time,” Mr Harvey said.

“We are six months into our new Research and Innovation Strategic Plan and have a jam-packed agenda ahead of us.

“Ms McGowan’s knowledge of agriculture, rural communities, and leadership experience will be invaluable as we commence this next phase of the AgriFutures Australia journey.”

Ms McGowan said she was excited to be joining the organisation and looked forward to working with the board and team to continue to grow the long-term prosperity and sustainability of Australian rural industries.

“I hope my previous experience and understanding of the agriculture sector will add value to this unique, regionally-based research development corporation,”

Ms McGowan said.

She replaces Kay Hull, who served as the AgriFutures Australia chair from 2016 to 2022.

Mr Harvey thanked Mrs Hull for her outstanding dedication and service and wished her well in retirement.

Ms McGowan commenced in the role as AgriFutures Australia Chair last week.

EMMA McNicol was born in Shepparton and raised as a teenager in Bairnsdale. Her young adult years were spent studying in Melbourne and travelling before moving to Albury in 2007. With her husband, Callum, she moved to Yackandandah four years ago, having seen the town as the place where the couple wanted to raise their family.

What’s your job?

When I’m not busy with the joys of running around our three small girls in Yackandandah, I’m a partner at the new pub, ‘The Lincoln’, on the causeway in Gateway Village. I helped to design and manage the refurbishment of what some may know as the once ‘Palatinat Brewery’ or ‘Three Monkeys Tavern’ - from layout, landscaping, bar design and wall colour to logo design and furniture selections. I’ve been lucky and had fun getting involved.

What brought you to this role?

Two years ago, Callum had the opportunity and drastic career change to join a local hospitality group. From that we joined the business as partners and with other young families where we took on the mammoth task of reimagining the expansive building.

We wanted to make it a meeting place on the Murray River and a much-needed hub for our recently divided cross border communities to reconnect. I have a background in design. After years of teaching and then time at home with the kids, I was excited to try my hand at design again and grateful to have the support of the family to do so.

What do you love about your job?

I love that we’ve been able to take on such a large project, to do it with friends, sharing the experience and watching our kids get involved from the first weeds being pulled to the smoking ceremony at opening. I’ve loved getting to know more about the area through various community groups and the many trades and locals that got involved.

What do you do in the community?

Our three kids attend the local primary school, kinder and day care, not to mention Scouts, swimming, library and I love frequenting the local markets and op-shops. And that’s just in Yackandandah. We feel so lucky to be raising these kids in this lovely little commu-

nity, especially during the time of COVID where we have had a chance to really slow down and get to know the town and each other. There are many wonderful individuals and community groups that keep this town buzzing and I hope to add to this one day in spades. I must say thank you to all those who volunteer their time to organise the many opportunities, events and support programs - such a backbone of this town.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

As a parent walking around town, it’s the safety of young pedestrians, cyclists and the speed limits around town that concern me.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

I would like to see more road crossings updated and made safer - particularly around spaces for kids, the elderly and the bike path connections.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

Climate change and the world our kids are inheriting.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

I would like to walk around with Margaret Olley (1923-2011) to take an easel on tour with her through the Yackandandah streetscape, hills, the forests and to collect the local produce to paint.

Why would you show the famous Australian artist that?

To see this beautiful area through her eyes and to hear her raw and quirky stories as we go.

Volunteers key in local golf club re-shaping

By DYLAN POOL GOLFERS braved the warm weather in numbers last Thursday night, as 15 participants turned out to Beechworth Golf Club for twilight competition on the course’s back nine.

Jamie Dolny walked away victorious with a score of 21, while Jacob Howard (20) was named runner up following a count back from Ben Ryder.

Ball winners were Dylan Pool, Rod Shaw, Andy Croome and Graeme Cordy, each with 19.

There was no nearest the pin on the Beechworth Bakery par three 10th hole, while Steve Piddington walked away with the nearest the pin on the 17th.

Jamie Dolny took home the cash with the nearest chip on the 14th, and Ben Ryder secured the raffle prize.

On Sunday, five players fronted up on a hot afternoon for a stableford event over the back nine.

The winner was Andy Croome (19) with 37 points, and Zane Howard (22) was runner up with 36.

claimed the nearest the pin on the 10th.

The front nine is just about playable, but with some holes still having a lot of grass clippings laying around, some places are hard to find your ball.

Also a big thanks to the few members who turned out for the working bee on Saturday.

The tree on the seventh fairway has now been cleaned up.

With the work carried out

by Rod Marshall, the sixth and seventh greens and surrounds have been completely re-built.

The plan is to turf around these greens when conditions suit and turf becomes available.

Also this week all things going well the fourth green will have the same re-shaping occurring to limit the amount of washouts on the scrape and improve the surrounds.

Big thanks to Andy Croome and Rod Shaw who have spent many hours on the course, not just this week but every week.

Without these two volunteering their time the course certainly wouldn’t be even remotely close to fully playable

From back page “We’ve been trying to get everyone back together first , get a couple of weeks into training and then we will get a discussion going on where we’re all at and where we want to be in two months’ time leading into our first practice match,” he said.

“We’ll re-assess again a couple weeks afterwards leading into round one and what that first couple of weeks look like after that as well.”

Beechworth this week locked in two practice matches against Ovens and King Football and Netball League squads Greta and Milawa on March 4 and March 17 respectively, which will follow a full club pre-season camp to Mount Buffalo from February 24-26.

Cartledge said it was important to have the practice matches set up early and is looking forward to getting the group ready for a big pre-season camp.

“Although there’s more of a fitness component to the camp, it’s probably more about the club building some culture and connections between us and the netball group or the supporters, or committee as an inclusive weekend,” he said.

“It’s not your typical pre-season footy camp, where blokes might go out and have 12 hours of things planned, it’s more about doing some big group activities where we can all get together and enjoy each other’s company and feel a bit of reward and sense of achievement at the end.”

The ‘Bushies’ have been on the track for the last two weeks, sweating through the summer heat in order to make a headstart on the competition.

Co-coach Tom Cartledge said he has been pleased by

the turn out and commitment of the group to training, especially during the hottest time of year.
