Mr Dean said there had been several homes flooded, in most cases caused

by the very large amount of water runoff.

“One house had to be evacuated near the Lake Sambell,” he said.

“Lake Sambell Caravan Park flooded when Silver Creek broke its banks and flowed straight through the park where it had to be evacuated and closed.

“With flooding all over

the shire many roads were cut off with trees down.

Mr Dean said people needed to remanin wary around trees, many of which had seen their roots eroded along banks, and also reminded motorists not to drive through flood waters.

He said huge community cooperation took place with people helping wher-

ever they could.

“I’d particularly like to thank the CFA, who filled around 2000 sandbags at the Beechworth SES premises, and provided amazing help,” he said.

“We could not have done it without them.”

Mr Dean there had been a lot of interaction with SES teams around the shire.

End of an era for local eatery

By CORAL COOKSLEY BEECHWORTH’S Indian Restaurant dished up its last meals with a banquet to appreciative customers on Saturday night in a packed dining room at the historic Wardens Hotel.

Shabbir Hussain with his wife Asra ran the eatery for the last seven years, bringing authentic cuisine with the subcontinent’s diverse tastes to local clientele.

The couple moved from Melbourne to Beechworth in 2012, and started the restaurant three years later.

Forced to close the business due to the recent sale of the 1911-era building, the family finished packing up to head back to Melbourne on Wednesday.

Shabbir said the community had been very supportive of the family’s journey since living in the town where they had made many friendships.

Always wanting to help the community in some way, Shabbir and Asra volunteered at the local Salvation Army and joined Beechworth Lions Club.

With a love of sharing their culture with the town, the community enjoyed special events such as the ‘Holi Festi-

val’.

“This showed the local community the Indian culture of serving langar (free food) to the community that is often seen in Indian religious and social events, and brought the community together after COVID isolations and restrictions,” Shabbir said.

“We have always been involved in the community, during the good and bad times where COVID made it hard to stay afloat, and the bushfires were an especially hard time for us as a community too.

“Friends from around Australia joined us to help serve meals to those who were affected in the bushfires, and we are very proud to have been able to do that.”

The couple’s son studies at university and is settled in Melbourne, with their daughter expected to start university in the city too.

Shabbir said as much as they loved Beechworth, the couple had decided to see it as an opportunity to explore other places in Australia and start a new chapter in their life.

“This business has been a very enjoyable experience for our family, we have many memories and highlights that we hold dear,” he said.

“They have always been keen to be involved in the community, they will be missed, and the community will miss the restaurant,” he said.

Beechworth’s Josie Cornish said Shabbir and Ashra and their family became wellknown community members and had always been there when needed by the community.

“They will be so missed in Beechworth not only for their amazing Indian cuisine but their smiling faces as they walked around town,” she said.

“Shabbir and Asra always bought local for their restaurant too where they could, and we all hope one day they will return to Beechworth.”

Besides taking away precious memories, Shabbir said they have packed Beechworth honey and Billson’s cordials and sodas too.

Alpine Valleys’ call for $10m leadership organisation investment A COMMITMENT of $10 million over four years is being sought from the State Government, to enable the continuation of Victorian leadership opportunities, including the Alpine Valleys Community Leadership.

Victorian Regional Community Leadership Programs (VRCLP) hopes to see ongoing state funding for programs delivered by its member or-

ganisations, which aim to build leadership skills and resilience.

Chair of Alpine Valleys Community Leadership Judy Charlton said the annual leadership program in the Ovens Murray region helped participants build their leadership capacity, with the delivery of community projects an integral aspect.

Community projects deliv-

ered by 2022 program participants include: * creating small films to highlight community food projects within the North East and Border, which will feature on the Australian Food System Directory ‘Sustain’ website; * raising awareness of the limited ability of businesses to provide food and drink services on the Great Valley cycle trail, with an aim to enhance

the visitor experience; * connecting with small primary schools to equip students with a single-use camera to inspire belonging, a positive sense of self, and pride of place; and * the ‘A Chair to Share’ project, advocating for mental health by creating park benches in the Rural City of Wangaratta, Towong Shire and Indigo Shire for commu-

nity members to sit - alone or with a friend - to reflect and speak up.

“These are examples from the hundreds of initiatives delivered by VRCLP participants and alumni across Victoria annually,” Ms Charlton said.

Established in 2012, VRCLP supports nine regional community leadership programs across Victoria, including Alpine Valleys.

With existing funding set to expire in December, VRCLP says its ability to plan for future regional leadership development programs has been severely impacted.

Ms Charlton said a funding commitment for Victoria of $10 million over four years would provide certainty to continue to deliver high quality community leadership programs.

Community centre fosters local resilience

By CORAL COOKSLEY YACKANDANDAH Community Centre (YCC) is forging ahead with exciting initiatives announced in its new strategic plan last Friday.

Perfect weather, food for gratis and music with a street party atmosphere added to the special occasion, with a 60-strong crowd gathering to hear the news at YCC’s open house.

YCC manager David Thorpe

said the plan sets out a change of YCC focus.

While providing existing services such as educational courses, there will be broader community initiatives which build community resilience and connection.

“The resilience project being developed with the community is to prepare for survival and recovery from natural disasters or emergencies,” he said.

“We are aiming to identify existing resources and infra-

structure, develop connections between major organisations and groups in town, and give the community information,” he said.

“The thinking is that a community which is informed and prepared for an emergency is better able to cope at the time and ultimately recover more quickly.”

Mr Thorpe said the aim is to work with emergency services and responders, such as the Red Cross, to ensure the best

community outcome.

A defibrillator project also announced outlined collaborative work with Yackandandah Community Development Company to identify defibs around town, publicise locations, list on appropriate apps and potentially purchase additional devices to ensure full coverage across the town.

Friday night’s goers toured the centre with its meeting room fitted with an 85 inch smart TV and additional au-

dio-visual equipment available to community groups free of charge.

Visitors had the chance visit the op shop, tune into the Indigo FM studio to listen to interviews on the night while Yackandandah Women’s Shed showcased their projects.

Mr Thorpe said the YCC Community grants scheme had been outlined with mention of $13,000 in grants awarded to nine Yack organisations earlier this year.

He said YCC was a place where community connects and grows together, a great meeting place as well as to access needed services.

“Our aim is to provde a central information base where our website has a broad range of information with lists of all the organisations in town, a business listing and an events calendar,” he said, Local musicians Jack Gregory and Terry Collins entertained the crowd.

Besides Lake Sambell spilling where properties were threatened and the Chinese Gardens left underwater, Woolshed Road suffered damage, while a number of walking and cycling tracks, as well as Indigo Creek Road, were closed last week.

Gooramadda Road, near Rutherglen, was also closed as floodwaters began streaming through a major sinkhole.

The CEO said culvert damage underneath roads had been

SINGERS from Beechworth and Stanley are rehearsing again as ‘the kelpie choir’ ahead of this year’s Christmas season service of lessons and carols at Beechworth’s Anglican Christ Church on December 18.

An occasional choir has supported the congregation at this service for seven of the past eight years.

This year the roundup numbers 16 soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices, including priest Father Gunnar Rippon, directed by Christ Church organist Sandra Williams.

Trumpeter Ben Thomas will also accompany the choir.

The service, starting at 7.30pm, will include readings from the Old and New Testaments, traditional carols and three choir pieces - an anthem based on a thirteenth century plainsong chant, an Australian carol written and composed by twentieth century

Parachute riggers pay respects

By CORAL COOKSLEY RETIRED Royal Australian Army parachute riggers from some Australian states gathered in Beechworth for this year’s Remembrance Day service.

Former parachute rigger Queensland’s Phil Thamm said it had been the first time the group had visited Beechworth.

“It’s the also first time we’ve gathered at a Remembrance Day service too as we normally just have a group gather for Anzac Day at different places around Australia,” he said.

Phil said the Army took over the role of parachute riggers from the Royal Australian Air Force in 1966, with the Army’s parachute riggers continuing to serve today.

“Parachute riggers pack and maintain parachutes as well as maintain aerial delivery equipment and undertake parachute jump training too,” he said.

“There’s a few of us from South Australia and Queensland here where we’ve joined in with old mates and have been chatting about old times.

“We select different towns and RSL Sub Branches each year to visit.”.

One of the first four female parachute riggers in the Australian Army visited with the group.

Queensland’s Diane Morrison has a brother in Beechworth, and joined the Royal Australian Army in 1973.

“Back then females and males were separated, and I did my basic army training

at Georges Hall in Sydney, then undertook transport training and became a driver,” she said.

Diane then took up parachute training in 1974 at Williamtown RAAF base followed by basic parachute rigger training.

“And it was great, because being one of the first four females, we had a really good bond and what was also great was the acceptance by the males, and we’re talking about the mid-70s,” she said.

Staying in the rigger trade, Diane became a physical training instructor with another training course at the Australian Army’s School of Artillery in New South Wales.

Diane said she loved everything about the military, including the camaraderie.

Reflecting on the fallen

By CORAL COOKSLEY AROUND 100 people observed a one-minute silence at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the month last Friday, as part of a moving service to remember those who fought in the First World War and conflicts beyond then.

The Remembrance Day Service held by the local RSL Sub Branch at the Beechworth Town Hall garden cenotaph marked the one hundred and fourth anniversary of the armistice on the Western Front.

Father Mike Pullar began the service with a prayer in remembrance of the fallen.

Local Sub Branch president John Eldrid said the day was a reminder of the 11th hour of November 11, 1918, when guns fell silent as four years of war came to an end.

Mr Eldrid in his commemorative speech said the Great War had sparked the mobilisation of 70 million people across many nations.

“It was the costliest conflict in history up to that time where thirteen million people died, nine million of them combatants,” he said.

Over one-third of all the soldiers killed were “missing” or had unknown graves.

Some 332,000 Australians fought in the Great War with the First AIF,

These statistics meant that only one out of every three Australians who went to the war got through it unscathed, at least physically.

With a population of around four million, Australia had, proportionate to forces fielded, the highest casualties in the British Empire.

A reading of the Ode, the Last Post, the one-minute silence and playing of the Rouse and Lest We Forget response followed.

Beechworth Secondary College (BSC) captain Cooper Waller recited

‘In Flanders Field’, with Lexi Bussell reciting the poem ‘We Shall Keep the Faith’ followed by Lazy Harry (Mark Stephens) singing ‘And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda’.

BSC students Ava Milsome and Angus Oldmeadow undertook the role of flag orderlies.

Cooper said Remembrance Day meant a lot to him as his great grandfather in the Australian Navy was on the minesweeper HMAS Warrego in the Pacific Ocean and Borneo in World War II. “The day pays respect to people who fought for our country - a beautiful one that we live in today,” he said.

Service, community, council, sports, and school groups as well as council and families laid wreaths.

Among them was three-year-old Frejya who, with her dad Steve Cale, laid a wreath they made together of rosemary and poppies on behalf of the Cale family.

“We made the wreath together with the help of several close friends,” Mr Cale said.

“Rosemary came from a dear friend and Vietnam veteran’s garden in Beechworth with the poppies from the local florist.

“It was special to us both.

“Our link to the day is my own experience in the army as well as a family history of service on my side both recent and dating back.

“We laid the wreath in memory of PTE Luke Worsley 2CDO killed in Afghanistan who our family owes considerable gratitude for his actions at the time he was killed.”

The service concluded with Mark Stephens strumming his guitar and singing the national anthem as the crowd joined in.

After the Second World War ended in 1945, November 11 became known as Remembrance Day, while poppies became the official symbol from 1921.

Local Salvation Army captain Pauline Middleton, BHS chief executive, clinical services director Angela Clement and Beechworth RSL’s Patrick Hayden assisted with the moving service.

Wreaths were laid in BHS grounds following the service, which was held indoors due to inclement weather.

Delivering insights into local history

By CORAL COOKSLEY MELBOURNE-based author Carole Woods will deliver informative insight into her book about Beechworth’s history at a Friends of the Burke Museum event to be held at the museum on November 26.

Beginning at 3pm, the talk is part of a popular series in supporting community interest around Beechworth’s past.

The writer said her book titled ‘Beechworth: A Titan’s Field’ had been published in 1985 with support of the then United Shire of Beechworth and townspeople.

“I’m delighted that the Friends of the Burke Museum have invited me to reflect on my history of Beechworth and how it influenced my later major involvement with community history, mainly through the Royal Historical Society of Victoria,” she said.

Ms Woods said she hopes her talk will spark renewed interest in the town as the

administrative centre of the extensive Ovens goldfield, and in agitation by the gold miners for political rights and the opening of the land to people of modest means.

“Beechworth produced a crop of outstanding Australians,” she said.

“Some of the issues that preoccupied leading townsmen, such as Richard Warren of the Ovens and Murray Advertiser, remain relevant today,” she said, The long serving Ovens and Murray Advertiser editor died in 1906 aged 75.

Mr Warren had been considered to be the oldest active newspaper proprietor in the state.

Originally from Cornish in the UK, he arrived in Melbourne in the first days of the gold rush and worked on the Morning Herald, moving to Castlemaine two years later.

The late Roy Harvey, a past curator of the Burke Museum and author of ‘Background to Beechworth’ had been Carole’s companion and guide in the township.

Ms Woods is a Fellow and honorary secretary of the Royal Histori-

cal Society of Victoria, a long-time advocate for local history and chaired the Victorian Community History Awards judges’ panel for seven years.

Pfeiffer Wines takes out top trophy

By CORAL COOKSLEY PFEIFFER Wines came up trumps at this year’s Victorian Wine Show winning the Colin Richardson Memorial Trophy for the most successful exhibitor.

Second generation Rutherglen winemaker, Jen Pfeiffer, received the award on behalf of Pfeiffer Wines at last Thursday’s event, where winners were announced at a presentation held at Mitchelton Winery.

The win marked the fifth consecutive time that Pfeiffer Wines has been awarded the trophy.

Ms Pfeiffer said it was a huge honour to win the trophy for the fifth consecutive year.

“It comes down to the dedication of the whole team and the quality focus we adopt at Pfeiffer Wines in all aspects of our business - from the vineyard to the winery to our customer experience,” she said.

“We have had some challenging vintages in the past five years with the excessive heat of 2019, the bushfires in 2020 and more recently, the very wet season for 2022.”

“Our willingness to adapt to these varying seasons helps us to continue to grow the best fruit we can year on year, to then go on to make the best wines we can each year.”

By CORAL COOKSLEY CHILTERN’S history is being penned in a second book by Ballarat-based author Robert Ashley.

Some research undertaken for the new permanent exhibition in the Historic Courthouse about Chiltern’s history launched last week had been drawn from Mr Ashley’s first book.

The book, which was written in 1974, is titled ‘The History of the Shire of Chiltern: The Story of the Growth of Local Government from the First Settlement by the Europeans in 1837’.

Mr Ashley also served as a consultant for the local research team, and said information had been extracted from his records as well as the book.

The author said seeing a cross section of Chiltern’s history displayed on the panels in the significant Historic Courthouse building had been gratifying.

“Bill and Lois Hotson, the committee and researchers have done a wonderful job,” he said.

Among other subjects covered will also be the development of the gold rush with the number of people attracted to Chiltern.

ily connection to artist AW Eustace too.

Some of the artist’s paintings captured events in the North East’s early history such as the arrival of a steamboat at Albury, and the Woolshed diggings.

AW Eustace also practised taxidermy and was responsible for mounting the large collection of native birds on display at the Burke Museum.

Mr Ashley said his father lived at Black Dog Creek in the depression years and married his mother at Beechworth, then lived in Albury where Mr Roberts was born in 1937.

“We moved to Sydney at the start of World War II,” he said.

Interested in Chiltern’s history, Mr Ashley said he wanted to delve into his own family’s history in the town as well.

The historian was responsible for the Chiltern Athenaeum’s restoration in the 1960s, where a second restoration is now taking place.

“I notified the National Trust of its importance, and they duly classified the building,” he said.

Funding boost for local primary school

By CORAL COOKSLEY BEECHWORTH’S St Joseph’s Primary School is one of a number of Catholic and independent schools across the North East to share $68 million in funding from the State Government.

Funding for projects to be carried out across the sector is part of round 4 of the 2019-23 Non-Government Schools Capital Fund.

The fund supports projects such as building new schools and increasing capacity or upgrading facilities at existing schools as well as the removal of asbestos and cladding at non-government schools.

St Joseph’s School has been allocated $1.46 million for refurbishment of existing general learning areas, library and corridor space.

said it was an exciting grant.

Ms Avery said four existing classrooms will be gutted with three replaced ones made more proportional in size and integrating any heritage listed parts of the building such as a wall along the corridor that can’t be touched.

“And the corridor will come into that building project,” she said.

“We’re hoping to get our planning permit in before Christmas and then we can go out to tender once that’s been approved by council.

“The history of this building is really important to us in this community but also looking at how we’re being a sustainable school.

“We’re ready to go as soon as we get our planning permit and a builder.”

Benambra’s Barkly Park battle

A $1m Labor funding pledge to redevelop and modernise change rooms at Rutherglen’s Barkly Park if re-elected has been trumped within days, with the Coalition pledging $2m to the project.

Announced on November 10, Labor’s commitment promised a seven-figure investment into the local community, as part of efforts to make facilities more accessible for a growing number of women competing in both football and cricket in the region.

Labor candidate for Benambra, Mark Tait, said it was vital to continue to support local sport.

“Sport is such a big part of our community,” he said.

“It’s why we’re investing in better change rooms for Barkly Park helping more people stay active and get engaged.”

However, in doubling Labor’s funding pledge earlier this week, incumbent Liberal Benambra MP Bill Tilley said enabling the park’s Committee of Management to build floor to ceiling windows, a viewing deck and upgraded catering facilities had been a focus of the Coalition since 2018.

He said a $1m commitment was “simply not enough for what (was) desperately needed”.

“We have seen in the past 1500 people here at games - there are so many community groups that use the facilities, and it is a hub for celebrations - it really is a gathering place for Rutherglen,” Mr Tilley said.

“This funding will lead to an even stronger community.”

Shire locals to contest for Legislative Council

THREE Indigo Shire residents are set to contest for a seat in Victoria’s upper house at next week’s state election.

Beechworth residents Michael White and Carol Norton-Smith will each contest to represent Northern Victoria in the Legislative Council as part of the Family First Victoria party, while Liz Fisher, hailing from Browns Plains, will represent The Nationals.

Ms Fisher previously contested the seat of Indi at May’s federal election, receiving 3.79 per cent of first preference votes in a division ultimately retained by Independent MP Helen Haines.

She said her regional upbringing, and continued involvement in the Rutherglen community, meant she had an understanding of rural communities.

Eight days out from Victorians taking to the polls, Mr White said he was committed to taking a bold stand for faith, life and family, in opposition to what he labelled “radical political correctness”.

“The direction of politics in Victoria has concerned me greatly,” he said.

“The liberal democratic principles that make our society successful and just are being pushed aside.

“We need level headed people in parliament who don’t think that the latest popular cause is justification for trampling our long held rights.

“I also want to be a voice opposed to Victoria’s brutal abortion-to-birth law.”

Samantha Meadows, Tangambalanga SAMANTHA Meadows was born in Adelaide, South Australia, and with her husband and son moved to Tangambalanga in December 2012.

What’s your job?

I have been a beautician for 18 years and run a beauty salon (Samantics Beauty) and we have a dog kennel business (Kiewa Valley Kennels). I am a face painter as well.

What brought you to the roles.

I’ve always had an interest in the beautician side of things and is a role I naturally pursued.

I fell into the dog kennel business taken on when we bought our property and saw the need in the area for the facility to continue. The previous owners had asked if I would keep the kennel running as it had a lot of sentimental relevance to them. We said we would give it a year and see how we go and 10 years on we are still going.

What do you love about your jobs?

I love talking to my customers and making them feel good with beautician services offered. It can be a way of boosting their confidence too.

With the kennel business I just love the dogs. We missed them during covid isolations. It was a sad time with no one able to travel and leave their dogs in our care.

With face painting I love to delight kids with their chosen themes and see their happy faces.

What do you do in the community?

I volunteer making Boomerang Bags. These bags are designed to replace plastic ones to reduce plastic pollution. We use recycled material to make a beautiful and sturdy bag that can be reused hundreds of times. I started making the bags because I wanted to learn how to sew and I was fed up with unreliable plastic bags that are environmentally unfriendly.

We plan to make extra for future events so people who need them will get them quicker.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

The question of world issues is a big one as there are a few. In

reality it’s a very slippery slope.

I try to do the right thing and be kind to those around me. I try to show compassion to others. I feel if everyone thought like that we would live in a better world. It is about education and a willingness to do better.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

I would love for my mum to come and visit from country South Australia. But she has Parkinson’s

disease and doesn’t travel. She would love to visit the waterfalls and see some of the lovely parks and walking tracks.

What book are you reading?

I love reading but I really haven’t much time. I get my fix on reading with Indigo Shire library’s free app ‘Borrow Box’, where you can borrow audio or eBooks for free. I often have my earphones in while I am running around listening to a book or three. I have been listening to many Australian authors on the history of our area.

I also love a good crime novel too.

Female cricket preparing to start

By NATHAN DE VRIES AS with every other type of domestic cricket competition, wet weather and ground conditions have hampered the start of the inaugural Open women’s T20 competition, but prospective players are as keen as ever.

Wangaratta and District Cricket Association female cricket liaison Andrea Belci said the response from the community was better than she had hoped, despite the competition yet to begin.

“We’ve had some really good training sessions and, just like all cricket, just haven’t been able to get on the grounds due to the weather - just like the seniors and the juniors, we just haven’t been able to get out on the ground and play,” she said.

“We’ve had a good response, we’ve got a young team from Rutherglen, we’ve got a team from Beechworth and a team from Wangaratta, so we’ve got three teams of mixed ages.

“They’ll be playing hard ball cricket, so T20 games, it’ll be really good.”

With the first game scheduled to be played in Wangaratta on Sunday, November 20, there is still time to get involved.

“Because it’s our first time, we really just want to run with the three teams before Christmas, and then we’re hoping after Christmas, we’ll have another couple of teams from

LAST Thursday we had a great roll up of 20 players for twilight golf.

We still aren’t able to play the full course, but we did play nine holes of Stableford on a composite course which included playing the 10th and 11th holes twice.

The winner of the night was Josh Carr with 20 points, whilerunner up, Dylan Pool, claimed the George Kerferd Hotel voucher with 18 points.

Ball winners were Dayne Carey 17, Mark Taylor 17 and Steve Piddington 17.

Rain saves Wanderers

STRONG POSITION: Beechworth Wanderers captain Brenton Surrey top scored with 24 runs at the weekend, however, a disappointing batting collapse resulted in rain being the only thing which stood between the Wanderers and a second nail-biting loss in as many weeks.

BEECHWORTH Wanderers AGrade captain Brenton Surrey had no hesitation in having a bat after winning the toss on a great-looking deck at the Benalla Gardens Oval.

The innings started well with openers Clancy Ellett and Kayde Surrey ticking the scoreboard over before Kayde holed out to mid-off as he looked to lift the scoring rate.

Clancy was the next to go in the 12th over being trapped plumb LBW for 9 runs, however, with the score at 2/33 and Richy Worcester joining Brenton Surrey at the crease, the run rate was starting to lift, with Brenton easily clearing the fence on one occasion, before finding himself trying to do the same thing the next over and being cleaned bowled for 24.

Shon Francis joined Richy at the crease and saw the side to drinks with the score at 3/52.

After the drinks break was when things started to fall in a heap, as the side lost the next five wickets for only 17 runs to find themselves 9/76.

This was until Willem Love joined Henry Scalzo for the last wicket, where with Willem’s power hitting and Henry’s carefully crafted cut shots, they put on a tenth wicket partnership of 14 runs.

Upon returning from the afternoon tea break, we nearly had the first wicket on the third ball of the innings as a lofted shot fell just a couple of feet from Matt Hicks at mid off.

Kayde picked up the first wicket in just his second over and had the team up and about early.

Shon Francis was bowling well into the breeze from the lake end and nearly had one of his own, but

the difficult catch was put down behind the stumps.

The second wicket fell with the score on 22, as Richy Worcester produced a ripper of a delivery to knock over Benalla Bushrangers stalwart Greg Hoysted, with the home side reaching the halfway mark only two wickets down.

The Haribo gummy bears at the drinks break proved a masterstroke, with a wicket falling straight away as Matt Hicks held onto a very well-struck stroke at square leg off the bowling of Richy Worcester.

As the weather started to roll in, so did the wickets, with Benalla losing four wickets in the space of two runs to now be at 7/72.

The clouds were rolling in and so was the Wanderers train.

Unfortunately with play certain to be suspended Benalla went all out swinging and it paid off, as they hit two boundaries in four balls before the heavens opened.

Players were sent running off the ground and the home side scampered to put the covers on the wicket, knowing only one run was required for a win.

The rain did stop and the covers did come off, but even with all the efforts from the whole Benalla side, the pitch was deemed unsafe by the umpire and the match was deemed a draw at 6:30pm.

A slight relief for the boys but overall a bit of a disappointing day with the bat again, because as was the case last week another 15 to 20 runs might have just been enough to claim victory.

This coming week we have our first home game for the season taking on City Colts at Baarmutha.

It would be great to see a good crowd watching on to support the boys.
