Iris has spent countless hours for more than 60 years as a volunteer with the last 34 of those in Beechworth.

“I started volunteering at a youth club when 16 years old and it has been engrained in

me from an early age.

“I think it was instilled in me by my grandmother - a volunteer - who lived next door when I was growing up.”

Arriving in Beechworth in 1988 when her youngest of six children was four years old, Iris said her volunteering in the town began as a member of the local primary school committee.

“I’ve been proud to showcase so many volunteers with their projects across v a broad spectrum over the years,” the 78-year-old said.

Beechworth won ‘Tidy Towns’ of the Year in 2009, 2014, 2017, and 2019 as well as being crowned ‘National Tidy Towns of Year’ in 2010 and 2020 with many category award wins since entries began.

As a Chamber of Commerce member, Iris helped to get the Beechworth Information Centre off the ground.

Being a Lake Sambell committee member for 18 years had also been memorable when the committee and community had worked hard with the United Shire of Beechworth at the time to rehabitat around the lake after the felling of pine trees, as well as many other projects.

“I think Lake Sambell has done well for tourism as well as the community but we set it up for the community as it is a community asset,” she said.

“I have to give credit to Anne Wilson too who deserves some of the limelight as she was involved in a lot the different projects too.”

The long-time volunteer said she never expects to be rewarded for her work.

“It’s something you just do and help where you can to contribute to your comw

munity for its benefit, and it has been wonderful to see many projects come to fruition,” she said.

“As a volunteer you meet many interesting people and make wonderful friendships too.”

Indigo Shire mayor Bernard Gaffney said Iris’s volunteer achievements for the town have been amazing with the award well-deserved as she has worked tirelessly for the community’s benefit.

“With the help of a committee she really put Beechworth on the map from her Tidy Towns work that showcased the town’s volunteers and their projects across Victoria and around Australia that attracted so much tourism for the town,” he said.

“Among other recognitions for her volunteer work, Iris as a Lions Club member has also been recognised by the Lions team with awards too.

“Iris has also managed to find federal and state government funding for the Lions Club historic Platelayers cottage renovation project in Harper Avenue.”

The project when completed will be a home for small community groups as well as the Lions Club.

Iris received a Victorian Premier Volunteer’s Champion Award presented by the Governor of Victoria in 2018, a Beechworth Lions Club appreciation award in 2015, Beechworth Lion of the Year for 2015-16, an Indigo Shire Australia Day Certificate of Achievement Award in 2009 as well as a Keep Australia Beautiful Dame Phyllis Frost Award in 2007.

Local residents become Australian citizens

By CORAL COOKSLEY AN Australian citizenship ceremony held by Indigo Shire Council on Monday of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend will have lasting family memories for Rutherglen’s Sandra De Oliveira Campos.

Sandra with her five day old baby boy Samuel left North East Health Wangaratta in the morning to head straight to the ceremony held at the George Kerferd Hotel in Beechworth.

Living in Rutherglen with her family, Sandra who hails from Brazil, said it had been an emotional day besides a big week with the birth of her baby, a little brother for twoyear-old Alister.

“I’m feeling humbled becoming an Australian citizen today and wasn’t sure that I was going to make it but had a lot of help in communication from Indigo Shire staff,” she said.

Sandra is one of six Indigo Shire residents who became Australian citizens at the special occasion.

The new Australian citizen made the pledge to the nation along with Teresa Frank, Lindsey Jenkinson, David Rose, Miles Satterley and Daniele Vicario before mayor

Miles Satterley arrived in Australia 11 years ago from England with a recent move from Melbourne to Beechworth where he has lived with his family for 18 months.

Already part of the community and studying physiotherapy full-time, Miles said he looked forward to enjoying the same rights and freedoms as other Australian citizens in the community.

A happy occasion for Beechworth’s Lindsey Jenkinson, she said becoming an Australian citizen had been a longtime coming.

Living in Beechworth for more than three years with her family, Lindsay works as a registered nurse in emergency at Wangaratta District Base hospital, Teresa Frank from Johannesburg in South Africa had lived in Yackandandah for five years before a recent move to Wodonga.

“Once becoming a citizen, the feeling of belonging goes up and I can put down roots like the tree gifted today,” she said.

Residing in Australia for seven years, Teresa said she loved regional living espe-

cially in North East Victoria.

Guest speaker Nationals senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie delivered the official welcome into the Australian community.

“What I think makes Australian citizenship ceremonies special is you have made a conscious choice that Australia is where you want to live, raise your family, build your future and it’s exciting that you have chosen us in regional Victoria,” she said.

Senator McKenzie also said in her speech the ceremony was an opportunity to recognise the benefits of different cultures and experience brought to Australians and communities.

“Together we will build a strong and healthier society for year to come,” she said.

Shire mayor Bernard Gaffney said citizenship ceremonies are the best occasions.

“It makes such a difference to our community with residents becoming Australian citizens and makes Indigo Shire a better place to live,” he said.

“Sandra De Oliveira Campos has come straight here from hospital and it shows how important the ceremony is to people participating.”

By CORAL COOKSLEY INDIGO Shire Council mayor Bernard Gaffney said he was extremely pleased with the community response to council’s budget process which he believed was the most effective he had experienced.

“I’ve been on council for a number of years and this is the most community engagement we have ever undertaken,” Cr Gaffney said.

“And the community has responded to that, previously we may have received four or five submissions, but prior to the draft budget we had received 311 submissions and following the draft budget’s release we received another 18 with five people speaking on their

submissions this week.

“We changed the outline of the budget after the initial submissions and I’m confident after the recent submissions we will make changes again.”

Cr Gaffney said while much of the criticism had been around funding for the rail trails he said there was no new council money in the budget for them.

He added the Rutherglen Winery Loop was funded by the Federal Government which was applied for after extensive consultation with Rutherglen stakeholders and with no council money.

“I was so pleased with the community response and the passion of the five people who spoke on Tuesday night,” Cr Gaffney said.

“Everybody who lives in Indigo Shire loves Indigo Shire.”

Tuesday night’s meeting was organised by council to focus on submissions where authors had requested to be heard by council in support of their submission.

Rutherglen’s Herb Ellerbock said Indigo Shire Council fails to listen to the community with a major overhaul needed to the draft budget and responses to the community survey, received from Beechworth and Yackandandah were proportional to their populations within the shire, while those from Rutherglen and Chiltern were disproportionately high which explained the main opinions expressed.

“In my opinion, a true measure of fairness requires

capital spending to be correlated with rates and charges revenue, something that this council has so far not been prepared to do,” he said.

Mr Ellerbock claimed the heading of “Footpath Upgrade Program” is misleading in the draft budget that has allocated $1.451 million of council funds for the Beechworth to Yackandandah Rail Trail while $925,000 is to be funded from borrowings for the EPIC Mountain Bike Trail.

Cr Gaffney said the $1.451 million referred to was money carried over from previous years which was part of a grant contract with the State Government that must be spent as agreed.

“There is no new money for the trails,” he repeated.

Beechworth History and Heritage Society (BHHS) member Lorraine Lucas addressed the organisation’s request last year for the appointment of a heritage and cultural officer which the society believed would be an asset for the planning, economic development and infrastructure departments and would ensure important liaison between council officers, local, state and federal organisations such as Heritage Victoria, Heritage Council, National Trust and the newly created Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee, Heritage Advisor and councillors.

She said the position would help in gaining funding opportunities and contribute

to heritage direction in Australia.

Ms Lucas said the role would assist the council’s part-time heritage adviser spread across a number of shires as well.

BHHS had also proposed that a councillor take on a heritage and culture portfolio as well as developing a handbook with a set of guidelines covering an introduction to heritage culture, the area’s historical significance and the importance of preserving built and natural history.

Contributions and suggestions will be considered when the documents on display, including the budget, are reviewed and prepared for council’s June 28 public meeting.

Winterwords Festival takes off

By CORAL COOKSLEY BEECHWORTH’S Winterwords Festival in its second year kicked off with an art exhibition on Wednesday evening while an eight-year-old artist stole the show.

With a love of animals Sophia Lee showcased a cute ink on paper drawing of her work titled ‘A puppy looking at falling leaves’.

“I like to doing art at school and the exhibition is great as people can see my drawing,” the artistic youngster said.

Winterwords creative director Janet Tweedie said around 35 people had been drawn to the event held in the Beechworth Serviceman’s Memorial Hall.

She said a number of new artists had joined in this year

among 14 of them with paintings, sculptures and textiles and more to showcase their work.

“It’s a low cost event by the community for the community with just a gold coin donation t where local artists can show their work and have fun,” Tweedie said.

Mosaic artist Jennie Bussell who works in stained glass with creations such as abstracts, landscapes, and birds said the exhibition is a chance to attract locals and tourists to see local artwork.

Artist Claire Mitchell said the exhibition gave her the chance to express feelings of what is happening in the world around hope.

Claire’s work in acrylic and sand on canvas showed hope from the 2020 bushfires

and floods based on climate change.

“Will there be hope if we don’t get on top of climate change or will it be different,” she said.

With the Winterwords Festival about any words forms, festival manager Roger Timewell said the exhibition ‘artwords’ is for all ages where artworks can be sold too.

“It’s for local artists who can do their thing and show off their work and gives them a venue,” he said.

“Some of the work reflects a cathartic nature where we have sign of the time works such as around climate change and the Ukrainian situation,” he said.

Reconciliation learning boost

By CORAL COOKSLEY LOCAL high school students boosted learning about reconciliation when a cohort took part in an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Education (ACHE) workshop - Cultural Knowledge and Sharing - in Wangaratta last Friday.

To acknowledge Reconciliation Week held between May 27 and June 3, students in Beechworth Secondary College’s Montessori Adolescent Program (MAP) attended the session where they gained further insights into Indigenous language and listened to stories from elders.

ACHE has discovered from recent studies that trees have been found to have Aboriginal cultural significance in the Wangaratta area where scars tell ancient stories with connections to songlines and traditional lore where students learned why tree protection is needed too.

MAP teacher Laureen Barnard said students joined Bpangerang elders at the ACHE workshop on the Northern Beaches after they walked the Bullawah trail and learned about totems such as Nargoon as well as the significance of local bush foods.

“They also learned about smoke trees for creating smoke signals that the kids found incredibly interesting as they got to see it in action,” she said.

“We felt it was important to do things visibly and with passion for reconciliation week.”

Reconciliation studies in this term’s unit have given students the chance to study Indigenous astronomy, song lines, artwork, symbology and storytelling as well as how languages varied across the country but are united by language

visual forms.

“Students have also explored chemistry and nutrition of a selection of bush foods where different groups have distilled eucalyptus leaves to produce oil to make into soap, growing lemon myrtle to dry and make into tea, and baking with macadamias,” Ms Barnard said.

She said studies have also covered difference between appreciation and appropriation, the meaning of Welcome to Country to be reciprocated, the importance of the Uluru Statement from the Heart, how to be an advocate and ally for indigenous minorities as well as learning about committed human rights abuses.

“They have also analysed ‘The final quarter’ of the Adam Goodes’ story and delved into the nuances of systemic racism and unconscious bias,” Ms Barnard said.

“Between them they have investigated handcrafts, bush foods, transportation, hunting, fire stick farming, natural bush remedies, local languages and much more which is shared in some way with the class.”

With an awareness of local language and stories through local indigenous elders, Ms Barnard said students gained a deeper respect and appreciation for the oldest culture on Earth with an understanding some it’s secrets.

“Learning lessons from the past, its one step more on the way to reconciliation, to healing the past and being actively involved in building a positive, strong future alongside our indigenous peoples,” she said.

The wider Beechworth Secondary College also marked Reconciliation Week with lessons on racism and reconciliation.

Empowering girls’ programs boosted by State Government grant

By CORAL COOKSLEY A SIGNIFICANT grant has boosted a project to extend a series of programs run at the old Stanley Primary School to empower and connect girls by building their confidence.

Stanley’s Danielle Bell and Beechworth’s Katja Shoenfelder have both had teaching careers and joined forces to develop ‘The Dragon Fly’ project for 10 to 17 year olds at the end of 2021 with State Government funding received in April this year.

As teachers they noticed an existing gap where a lack of support existed for girls to find their space and be more confident so the pair embarked on a plan to change the culture by providing inclusive health and wellbeing programs.

With the realisation that isolation caused by bushfire impacts and COVID had affected young people, Danielle said the government identified girls as a marginalised group.

The program innovator said the $200,000 grant received from Vic Health’s ‘Big Connect’ grant backed by the Stanley Rural Community Incorporated (SCRI)

that helped secure funding for the project, means growth and expansion of programs held in the Stanley school building.

“We still run existing programs started in 2018 and a school-based kitchen, garden nutrition and wellbeing program too,” she said.

One of the existing programs, ‘Empowering Girls’, which is fully funded by Indigo Shire Council, will run under the umbrella of the ‘The Dragon Fly’ project with the other varied structured programs.

Programs focus on food growing, nutrition, nature and creative arts to build capacity, resilience and meaningful social connection.

SRCI president Shirley Harring said the main aim of the SRC as a volunteer community organisation is to support and develop thriving, resilient and sustainable community projects.

“Auspicing ‘The Dragonfly Project’ gives the foundling program a safe place to operate from, and allows physical space for the project to grow, transform, and evolve in line with the project’s purpose,” she said.

“These programs are designed to support personal development and growth through carefully curated sessions that empower and build emotional and mental resilience.

“Not only will girls learn self acceptance, they will learn to lead, to listen, and

to take ownership of their actions and feelings where they will develop as strong, capable women of our future - women empowering women.”

Danielle said funding has given the pair a chance to set up an advisory group from program graduates where they can become mentors as well.

“There are still a lot of places where girls don’t get opportunities, and mindsets and definitely culture need to change,” she said.

Community C i paramedics di can help solve ambo crisis - Quilty LIBERAL Democrats MP for Northern Victoria Tim Quilty has urged the Victorian Government to get behind a scheme that frees up emergency services by allowing home visits by paramedics.

Founded last year, the HMS Collective is a group of highly qualified paramedics who provide medical attention for people who don’t need to be taken to hospital.

Modelled after successful schemes in Canada and the UK, the home visits prevent the over-use of ambulances and long wait times at emergency wards.

HMS Collective started in the Macedon Ranges and now has patients in Sunbury, Ballarat, Bendigo, and Melbourne’s north and west where they have reduced ambulance call out times by an average of 90 hours a week.

They provide services for a fraction of the cost of ambulance call-outs and are currently funded by the NDIS, aged care packages or directly by patients.

“It is a no-brainer that the state government should

expand the scheme,” Mr Quilty said.

“It means people get earlier attention in their homes while ambulances and hospitals can focus on emergency cases. It also saves both public money and the money of patients who are required to pay more than $1800 in regional Victoria for a ride in an ambulance.

“For the last three years, I have been asking the government why areas such as Indigo Shire have the slowest ambulance response times in the state.

“No adequate answers have been given.

“I asked for the Minister to meet with them back in February, and they were ignored. Since then, medical services in Victoria are being stretched beyond breaking point.

“This is a simple solution and should have received State Government backing in Victoria last week.”

Mr Quilty said he would continue maintain pressure on the State Government to expand the service to Northern Victoria.”

Major sewer upgrade work underway in Beechworth A NEW $4.5 million sewer upgrade project is underway in Beechworth which is designed to help resolve the town’s sewer capacity issues during heavy rain storms.

North East Water (NEW) is in the process of installing a four kilometre long sewer transfer pipe as well as a new pump station to address sewage overflows to the Beechworth Historic Park.

NEW executive planning and infrastructure Rebecca Jhonston said construction work is now around the halfway point.

“Our contractor has just finished a difficult one kilometre horizontal ‘long bore’ from the sewage treatment plant at Woolshed, under the Historic Park and through to Old Chiltern Road in Beechworth”, Ms Jhonston said.

“This was a monumental task which required drilling through some extremely hard granite.

“They have also just pulled a continuous segment of pipe back through the horizontal bore, with the pipe having to be welded together in large sections above ground before being pulled through.

“This piece of work is a great environmental outcome for the Historic Park as construction was only necessary at each end of the bore.

“The community will now see activity in the busier areas of town, with pipe work to soon begin along Last Street and Sydney Road.

“There will be traffic management in place along the route involving

“We are aiming to have this project completed by the end of the year, dependent on the weather.

“I would like to thank the community for their patience as we work to deliver this critical piece of infrastructure.”

Initial planning work has also commenced to upgrade the town’s sewage treatment plant which will be necessary to take extra flow from the new transfer main, as well as accommodate future population growth.

A DECLARATION of the polls yesterday officially named Helen Haines the winner of the 2022 Federal Election for Indi after she claimed a resounding victory by 17,981 votes over the Liberal candidate Ross Lyman in the two-candidate preferred (TCP).

Under the TCP it was a 7.46 per cent swing in favour of Dr Haines who accumulated 59,771 votes to Mr Lyman’s 41,790, and in the first preference count it was Haines with 41,321 votes against Lyman’s 30,990.

Australian Electoral Commission returning officer Jenny Essex made the declaration of the polls in the tiny Ely Street headquarters yesterday.

Ms Essex made note that it was “peaceful and amicable” around polling places this election and she thanked her staff for their efforts with pre-polling, polling booths and post-election activities.

Dr Haines said she was “thrilled and excited” to be returning as the MP for Indi and described it as “an enormous privilege” and one she takes with great seriousness

and sincerity.

“The responsibility is huge and I have a clear sense of what it takes to be a strong and independent representative of the people of Indi and I look forward to the 47th parliament returning for the first sitting day on July 25,” she said.

In accepting the win, Dr Haines spoke of a more challenging election process than “perhaps in any other time in our history” and thanked Ms Essex and her team for their “expertise, grace and good will”.

She acknowledged Mr Lyman for the way he conducted himself throughout the campaign and expressed her commiserations to him and all the other candidates.

“It’s not an easy thing to run for a seat in the Federal Parliament, it’s a very big undertaking and candidates don’t do that alone,” she said.

“They do that with the support of a very wide team of volunteers and helpers throughout what was a long period of time, so I acknowledge those people too and the way they conducted themselves throughout the electoral process.”

Mr Lyman congratulated Dr Haines and he thanked his supporters for their work throughout the campaign.

He turned his focus to the state election saying he will

be there to support Coalition MPs Bill Tilley, Cindy McLeish, Tim McCurdy and Steph Ryan.

In her first week after the election, Dr Haines wrote to Labor Minister for Health Mark Butler and Minister for Aged Care Anika Wells, inviting them to the region to see firsthand what’s required to fix the strained health system.

She talked about the chronic workforce shortages across the health system, trying to deal with a backlog of patients, compounded by the pandemic restrictions and staff illnesses.

Dr Haines cited some fundamental responsibilities of the Federal Government as aged care and mental health and funding that is desperately needed for a new Albury-Wodonga hospital.

“Federal governments have funded new hospitals in the past and we saw an election promise from the Labor Party for a new hospital in South Australia,” she said.

“I’m going for that in the same way I went for the Coalition, I’ll be working and fighting just as hard with Labor to make sure they fulfil their responsibilities around health care here.”

A pioneering and inspirational woman Obituary Helen Wyuna McKay / / / / - 22/03/1922 - 17/05/2022

By KAREN MCINTYRE FORMER Elmhurst and Lake Bolac resident Mrs Helen McKay celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at her home in Stanley near Beechworth in northeast Victoria.

Her early childhood in the bush, riding horses and being active in all sports has stood her in good stead for a long and productive life.

Born at Elmhurst on March 22, 1922 to parents Walter and Edith Moore, Helen grew up with her elder brother and two younger sisters (all now deceased) on their family farm “Deer Park”. She attended Glenpatrick Primary, a school of just 12 students, and remembers riding her pony or sometimes walking through a flooded “Nowhere Creek” to get there.

She went off to boarding school at Melbourne Girls Grammar for her secondary education, a highlight was playing as the goalie against the visiting English hockey team.

The Second World War began just as she left school and she returned to commence nursing training at Ararat.

She then “worked all over the country” gaining experience as a nurse, including travelling to callouts with the Ararat ambulance drivers around Wickliffe and Willaura - because she was a good navigator. Things must have been a little slower in those days as she recalled them stopping by the side of the road to collect mushrooms!

Wartime was a period of rationing when food and resources were scarce. Helen rode her horse to work - day or night, depending on her nursing shifts - a remarkable trip of 30 miles. Luckily she was privileged to be able to rest her horse in the Doctor’s paddock.

After the war she met re-

turned soldier Murray McKay from Great Western when he visited the hospital that she was working in. They were married in the Church of England in Ararat by Reverend Townsend. Murray was allocated a Soldier Settlement farm on the Myuna Estate at Lake Bolac and the couple made their home in a tin garage and small hut with primitive wind generated electricity.

There were no roads back then and very few fences.

They had to travel through a ford of the Salt Creek to get to their property and in the early years it was very wet.

They mostly took two vehicles whenever they went anywhere, so that one could get the other out when bogged.

The timber for their new house was unloaded on high ground and it took a year for the ground to dry out before it could get to the site.

In the early days of settlement Helen was often called upon for her nursing skills, including accidents and midwifery, but this was in an unofficial capacity as in those days women couldn’t work if they were married. Despite the hardships the couple’s four children David, Suzanne, Richard and Wendy were raised at the Lake Bolac farm.

Helen’s pioneering spirit saw her organising and competing in Woorndoo and Lake Bolac gymkhanas and surrounding town equestrian events. Her favourite was show jumping with her Palamino named “Silver”.

Her claim to fame was riding Silver to beat the famous Bill Roycroft and his horse at the show jumps. Another wealthy rider offered to buy Helen’s beloved Silver, but she would never sell.

Helen was the first woman on the Advisory Council of the Lake Bolac High School.

She also held roles of president, secretary and treasurer of the Mother’s Club. She

Helen can be relied upon in a crisis. She instigated the relief centre for the Streatham bushfire in 1977 and was awarded a Red Cross medal for her efforts. Her long term dedicated service to the Red Cross exceeded an official 67 years, but she first became a member at boarding school, which makes her association with them around 85 years.

In 2014 she was happy to receive a gilt rosette for long service to the Red Cross at Lake Bolac’s 100th anniversary of Red Cross.

Since retiring from Lake Bolac four years ago Helen has continued gardening, caring for her horses, and loving her seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Amazingly Helen was still getting on ponies into her 90s. She credits her longevity to having a sense of humour and always remaining physically and mentally active. “Advances in modern medicine might play a part too” she laughs. Her wisdom to share with others is “to always be involved and interested in your community, your country and the world.

Be grateful for the tiniest things and know that there is always someone worse

off than you”.

It’s good advice from a charming lady who has shone through hardship, sadness, drought, fire, flood, plague and pestilence. A truly pioneering and inspirational woman.

When David and Sally moved to Stanley in 2008 they set up a very comfortable “granny flat” where Helen would come to stay for several months each year.

They worked hard at having her meet people up here she would relate to easily. This was a great joy and pleasure for the family as she fitted in so well and made many good friends.

All the above made it much easier for Helen to fi-

nally leave Lake Bolac and move to 279 Myrtleford Stanley Road in January 2018.

Wendy has said that it has been a privilege and honour to care for her mother in her declining years and particularly recently when the task was much greater. Helen had her wish which was to die at home, made possible due to Wendy’s loving care.

The McKay family would very much like to thank the people of Stanley and Beechworth and beyond for their kind support. Helen has gone but she will certainly not be forgotten. A celebration of Helen Wyuna McKay’s life will be held in the Stanley Hall on Tuesday, July 5 at 1.30pm.

Health divide deepens HEALTH must remain a key focus of future state budgets to reduce the divide between regional and metropolitan health services, according to Wangarattabased state MP Tania Maxwell.

After requesting the Parliamentary Budget Office investigate a split of asset funding which allegedly left regional Victorians 11 per cent worse off than their metropolitan counterparts last year, Ms Maxwell said regional Victorians deserved a much improved healthcare system.

This year’s state budget

promised a $12b spend to provide an additional 7000 healthcare workers across the state, provide additional paramedics and improve surgical capacity across Victoria.

“The people that work within the system give it their all, with great compassion and care each and every day,” Ms Maxwell said.

“But we have shortages across the board - and it is not a new story.

“However, it is one that is getting more pronounced from GPs to allied and community health, ambulances, hospitals, mental health

support and aged care.

“If the budget is about health, which was the government pitch, I think the next one and the one after that will need to be as well, until our system is back on a better footing.”

In calling for more accountability for funding provisions in regional Victoria in parliament last week, Ms Maxwell suggested a regional impact statement accompany future budget papers to provide comparisons for regional taxpayers.

“There seems to be a bit of smoke and mirrors

in this budget with some big figures touted, but the fine detail raises questions about what has been expended or represents cofunding which has been listed in one area but cut from another,” she said.

“There is no doubt that the nature of geography and topography often makes the claim for regional areas needing more, not less.”

Wodonga-based Liberal Democrat MP Tim Quilty said he opposed the budget outcome, questioning a spending commitment which had risen 31 per cent from pre-pandemic levels.

Passionate about mental health and nature KATIE Murray was born in Canberra and moved to the Ovens Valley in 2007 where she started her stint in the north east in Harrietville, then Bright, followed by Myrtleford and has lived in Beechworth for the last five years.

What’s your job?

I am a health professional, including a certified equine assisted learning practitioner (equine therapy for people) that I offer from our property with my team of four gorgeous horses and one equally gorgeous doggo; a health promotion practitioner and current fulltime student in a Graduate Diploma of Counselling.

What brought you to this role?

When I was a little girl I wanted to spend my days with horses and people.

As I grew up I had a passion for fitness, so turned that into being a personal trainer, then got bored and tired of that (including the very early mornings!) and started uni as a mature age student to find my way into health promotion.

After 10 years in that field my focus now is to move into mental health, continuing to offer equine assisted therapy as it meets the needs of so many people who may not otherwise engage in, or get results from, room based talk therapies.

What do you love about your job?

I am passionate about mental health and healing and love being

I’ve generally got my hands full juggling roles of mum, horse owner and general slave to the animals, grass farmer etc, but I always try to promote and support local events, music and food initiatives that support growing and eating local produce.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

The housing issue.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

Well, it is a broad issue, so requires a multi-faceted solution.

First and foremost though, I’d love to see amendments to council rulings on granny flats, tiny homes,

multiple dwellings so the number of affordable housing options increase.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

The health and diversity of Mother Earth.

I’m looking forward to seeing the use of more renewable energy sources and sustainable solutions over the next few decades.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

Purely sentimental, that would have to be my dad (who passed away six years ago).

We would visit our property, the cemetery and the bakery.

Why would you show him that?

He loved visiting us in the North East of Victoria but never got to see our property here in Beechworth.

He particularly loved visiting Beechworth’s cemetery and having me read the dates of birth, diverse backgrounds and war experiences of those laid to rest here. And he was a bit partial to sweet baked goods on a cold day... or any day for that matter.

What book are you reading?

A text book actually - I don’t have time for novels. ‘Working with Difference and Diversity in Counselling and Psychotherapy’ which explores contemporary thinking on the constructs of difference, social identity and culture - very rich.

Opportunity for community sporting clubs to win equipment grants The State Government is giving community sport clubs a chance to win grants for new uniforms and equipment, training, and club development.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence announced applications are now open for the latest round of the Sporting Club Grants Program.

“Sporting clubs are the social fabric of communities and that’s why we’re backing them with funding for uniforms and equipment,” she said.

“We know the positive impact community sporting clubs have and this is about helping and investing in them so more people can reap the rewards of

getting active.”

Clubs can apply for grants of up to $1000 for new uniforms and equipment, up to $5000 for training coaches, officials and volunteers, and up to $5000 to better club operations.

Previous recipients include the Bacchus Marsh Baseball Association which scored $1000 to pur-

chase new baseballs and helmets for their ‘KickStart Program’, Foster Golf Club received $1950 to undertake financial management training, and White Hills Bowls Club was awarded $5000 to develop a strategic plan.

The program is part of the State Government’s work to make commu-

nity sport accessible and inclusive, stimulate local economies and create opportunities for greater participation.

This round of the program is complemented by the Community Sport Sector COVID-19 Survival Package that provided $50 million to more than 7500 clubs, leagues, state asso-

ciations and other organisations across the sector.

The grants are part of the government’s $1.2 billion investment in community sport and recreation infrastructure since 2014.

Bushrangers looking to get season back on track

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN THE Beechworth Bushrangers will be looking to bounce back this weekend in the TDFL against Thurgoona to get their season back on track.

After winning their first five games of the season, Beechworth has dropped three of their last four games, with their sole win coming by four points over Dederang-Mt Beauty.

Despite their recent slump the Bushrangers sit fourth on the ladder, making great improvement from their efforts last season.

Appointments of co-coaches Tom Cartledge and Brayden Carey has proved a masterstroke so far as the Bushrangers could lay claim to the most improved team in the competition.

Cartledge has also been a crucial performer for the Bushrangers on the field, coming through when his team has needed him most while Kayde Surrey and Campbell Fendyk have been consistently among the best through out the year.

The game this week could prove pivotal win or lose, as another loss could mean w the Bushrangers fall back to the fight for finals positions in the middle of the table.

Their percentage should prove an advantage after the club’s record breaking 431 point win over Wahgunyah last month, who they will face again in the second half of the season.

Beechworth’s reserves are also well and truly in the finals race sitting sixth on the ladder at the halfway point of the year.

Croome claims monthly medal A WINDY, cold afternoon was what greeted the golfers last Sunday afternoon but even after the wet miserable week, the course was very dry under foot and the greens were great to putt on.

Stroke for the June Monthly Medal was the game.

It was tight at the top with three players returning the same score of 70 nett.

After a three way countback was conducted it was Andy Croome who prevailed with

88/18/70, Jacob Howard was the runner up with 82/12/70 and the unlucky third place getter was Dylan Pool with 71/1/70.

There was also a prize for the least amount of putts and that went to Jacob Howard with just 23 putts.

Two nearest the pins went off and they both went to Andy Croome on the 5th and 10th.

This Sunday will be an

Ambrose event.

It would be good to see a great field turn up to participate in a more fun, social teams event before the serious stuff starts the week after when the Club Championships start.
