The project, which will see 22kms of brand-new single mountain bike trails added to the region’s existing track network, will connect Beechworth and Yackandandah as the

nation’s only all-season epic trail.

The $2m initiative was jointly funded by Indigo Shire Council and the Federal Government, and is expected to attract an additional 12,500 visitors

to the local region.

Mayor Sophie Price said the trail offered flowing descents and undulating climbs as part of a “helix loop design”, and could be tackled in its full length from Beechworth to Yackandandah or cut into smaller loops ideal for families to choose their own adventure.

She said the criteria for an epic trail as described

by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) dictated the trail must be a demanding singletrack adventure in a natural setting which is technically and physically challenging.

“From all accounts, we’ve ticked all the boxes and the feedback from those lucky enough to test ride the trail have

described it as one of the best they’ve ever ridden,” she said.

“The original concept to build a world-class mountain bike trail in our region was put forward by the Beechworth Chain and Yack Tracks mountain bike clubs, which have been the driving force behind making Indigo Epic Trail a reality.

Chil Chiltern artists i showcase works

By CORAL COOKSLEY LAST weekend’s three-day Chiltern Pop Up Art show was a terrific opportunity for a newcomer to the town to connect with other creatives.

Chiltern’s Yasmin Chambers said joining the art collective had been an exciting time with a warm welcome every step of the way. w “It is a great way to showcase all the wonderful diverse styles we all have,” she said.

Local Chiltern artists had a chance to showcase their artwork with an official opening held on Friday night.

Close to 30 people attended the event where more than 50 works were exhibited w by 16 artists.

Creative works featured painting, photography, ceramics and metal sculptures exhibited in the yesteryear charm of the town’s historic courthouse.

Courthouse committee president Bill Hotson delivered the opening address where he spoke about the history of art in w the Chiltern district from rock paintings at Yeddonba aboriginal cultural site at Mt Pilot more than 2000 years ago to the work of Alfred Eustace, a shepherd on the Eldorado and Ullina runs noted for his paintings on gum leaves.

“Artist and educator, the late Eddie Kneebone - a Bangerang man, Chiltern identity and resident, was an inspiration to many people and left a lasting legacy with his massive work called “Bones of Contention” as part of his PhD thesis,” Mr Hotson said.

“The exhibition was well supported by the many artists now living in our community who are keen members of our newly organised Chiltern Artists Collective.”

Mr Hotson said the art show had been well received by visitors with 135 people w walking through the door over the three w days where six artworks sold.

The addition of the Beechworth to Yackandandah leg of the trail completes the 56kmlong network, which passes through the Stanley State Forest, Beechworth Historic National Park and Nine Mile Creek historic area.

Former Yack Tracks president James Lacey said ideation for the trail had started almost a decade ago, and said members had questioned whether it could ever become a reality.

Yet the current owners do not seem to worry about the exterior of the building becoming dirty with rubbish accumulating, especially on the front portico and steps.

Thankfully some concerned locals have been seen out with brooms and dust pans doing what the owners should do so that this iconic building does not look shabby.

However, the whole exterior needs a

good high pressure wash down.

Council needs to get the owners on to the job to maintain the exterior at least.

The 1859 post office is one of the most iconic buildings in Beechworth.

It is featured in almost every photograph promoting Beechworth.

As Ronald Stone stated, it is currently in a “appalling state”.

The accumulation of rubbish and the deterioration of the exterior diminish the experience of visitors to Beechworth- as well as locals.

This historically significant building must not be allowed to continue to deteriorate.

Responsibility for cleaning and rubbish removal must be determined and enforced so that the beauty of Beechworth is not eroded.

Refreshed facilities to add new dimension to local high school

By CORAL COOKSLEY BEECHWORTH Secondary College will showcase its state-of-the-art facilities as part of an open night later this month.

Principal Trish Broom said the format had changed from last year, with selfguided and student-led tours to take place on the evening.

“People can come along at 5pm when the event starts with a presentation at 6pm and they have the opportunity to start with the talk and take a tour afterwards,” she said.

Among interactive activities on the evening will be a variety of subject areas including experiments in the science labs, robotics, 3D printing, maths, languages and sport.

Youngsters with their families will have a chance to be engaged with some activities as well where they have a chance to win a prize too.

“The open night is a great chance for people to see new facilities opened last year,” Ms Broom said.

The principal said among many school strengths was a host of individual programs

for students.

“We’re really personalising and catering for an individual, whether it’s support or extension, she said.”

“We have expanded what we can do now as well as we also have a clear path with the extension program for students with the new Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES) located in South Yarra.”

The $27.5 million centre with university partners launched in October last year has been created for government high school VCE students.

“We also run a Department of Education and Training (DET) high ability program which identifies students in years seven and eight where they undertake extensions in Maths or English.,” Ms Broom said.

With options expanded, the principal said additional funding to support students in accessing a wide range of VET programs had been gained too, with students supported to stay local.

“We have team building for years seven and eight with the local dragon boat club too,” Ms Broom said.

The principal said the college participates in the Bogong Outdoor School and extension programs, where this year three students had been selected to go on an ex-

citing journey to Nepal.

The school also works closely with Rutherglen, Myrtleford, Tallangatta, Mount Beauty and Bright High Schools.

Ms Broom said a French language program has taken off where the college works with Beechworth Primary and Yackandandah Primary Schools where teaching re-

sources are shared.

“We have a language trip to Vanuatu next year which is a great chance to build on the language and something we see as valuable,” she said.

Heritage efforts to unite

By RYAN MALCOLM HERITAGE representatives from across the shire are set to gather in Beechworth next week, as part of efforts to create a united front on heritage issues throughout the region.

Beechworth Heritage and Historical Society (BHHS) president Elizabeth Mason said group members had long-discussed meeting with other heritage-passionate community members to better advocate for a shirewide response. w As a result, representatives, from Rutherglen, Yackandandah, Stanley, Chiltern, Wahgunyah, Tangambalanga and Beechworth will gather at Beechworth’s Nicholas Hotel on Thursday from 5pm.

“Our advocacy group (BHHS) has been up and running for about five years and we have met regularly we’re a fairly small group but we have a membership w base of more than 300 people, so there’s a lot of people far and wide who support protecting our heritage and promoting it,” Ms Mason said.

“This is a new initiative -there have been conversations over the years but nothing specific where we’ve actually reached out to (other groups) and thought let’s get together and have a talk and have an opportunity for them to voice their concerns and see how they feel and where they sit with heritage management within the w shire.”

Ms Mason said the group was continuing to push for Beechworth’s historic carriage collection to be permanently housed at the town’s refurbished goods shed, with w an eye to developing the area into a tourism site.

She also said BHHS had called on Indigo Shire Council to employ a full-time heritage manager in order to oversee the region.

She said she was looking forward to hearing about other heritage-related issues throughout the historic shire.

“We’ve been working with a number of requests we’ve put to ISC about looking after certain projects and we have not felt that they’ve been received,” she said.

“Through this feeling of desperation, we have reached out to a number of heritage towns within the shire and we’ve made contact with a number of those groups and w we’ve invited them to come and talk to us about their w issues and how we as a united voice can have a bit more impact.”

Walking the talk A GROUP of volunteers impacted by suicide and mental-ill health will walk from Beechworth to Bright over three days next week.

The annual B2B walk follows the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail and brings people together to walk, talk, and support - sharing stories of loss, struggle and survival with people who really get it.

The B2B crew invite people affected by suicide, people who work in the mental health sector, people who support loved ones who live with mental ill-health, and all survivors to buy a ticket to walk with them and talk with them from Friday.

President Lisa Cartledge said B2B challenges the common beliefs that suicide and mental ill-health are shameful subjects that cannot be spoken about, and wants anybody affected to be able to stand up, open up and start talking about the elephant in the room.

“We believe hard chats are a bit easier when you’re walking shoulder to shoulder, and we’ve seen people make deep connections on B2B walks, sharing powerful stories of loss, struggle, recovery, and survival over a 20 or 30km walk,” she said.

Art tells stories at Rutherglen showcase

By CORAL COOKSLEY A CROWD of 250 art lovers from around the region and beyond packed into the Rutherglen Memorial Hall for the town’s Tastes of Art Prize opening gala night last Friday with more than 450 artworks on show for the exhibition.

Run by ArtsRutherglen, the sixth successful event with a combined prize pool of more than $14,000 drew more than 200 artists with entries across various categories from as far as Western Australia.

Wangaratta Art Gallery arts educator and exhibition officer Inga Hanover judged the visual arts category while North East Media’s senior photographer Kurt Hickling judged photographic sections.

Officially opening the event Indigo Shire mayor Sophie Price said the Art Prize is an incredible drawcard for the region where she congratulated organisers.

Ms Hanover thanked artists for sharing their labours and artistic visions with an exceptional standard of creative works.

The judge said works showcased uplifting colours, luscious textures, expressive movements as well as quieter energy, touching depictions of rural narratives, interesting

authenticity in the work, technical qualities along with what and how the artwork communicated.”

Mr Hickling said judging the exhibition had been a wonderful experience with many talented artists and

photographers presenting amazing work in a variety of mediums.

In judging the ‘Open’, ‘Landscape’ and the youth sections, for best in photography, sculpture and freehand drawing, the

judge said the ‘Landscape’ winner with work titled “Wreck Beach” had been a stunning image take.

“It presented beautiful textures, colour and was framed with precision,” he said.

“The ‘Open’ section image titled “The Secret” was flawless and was high in difficulty using low light photography and was a clear winner in the end.”

Rutherglen photographer Anne Killeen had the winning entry of ‘The Secret ‘ - a portrait of a 13-year-old with her horse given as a birthday present.

“My biggest thrill is receiving a prize for something that I really enjoy, am passionate about and love,” she said.

Delighted ArtsRutherglen president Helen Mackinlay said the event had been a fabulous success.

“The committee’s work has been totally amazing, the event brings the community together and we had Rutherglen High School students catering for us as well,” she said.

The exhibition runs with artworks on sale runs until Sunday 19 March.

The event coincided with the Tastes of Rutherglen food festival, where 17 local wineries had their cellar doors open over the Labour Day weekend.

Beechworth to host state landcare forum LANDCARERS from across Victoria are set to converge on Beechworth later this month, as the township hosts the Victorian Landcare Forum.

Following two years of COVID pandemic-related cancellations, the event will return in-person on March 24 and 25 at the George Kerferd Hotel, providing an opportunity for the landcare community to come together to discuss the environment and natural resource management.

Landcare Victoria Inc. board chair, Jane Carney, said Friday’s program included presentations on a diverse range of subjects, as well as a hands-on workshop element.

“Come along to hear about the Australian National University’s (ANU) Sustainable Farms project, gardens for wildlife and citizen science as tools for landcare, connecting with community before, during and after major disruptions, aggregating smaller carbon projects, and supporting diversity in landcare volunteering,” she said.

“We will also hear directly from landcare groups, about how they have adapted the alndcare model and continue to grow, despite a more challenging funding environment.”

Information stalls run by Landcare Victoria Inc, Agriculture Victoria, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), and local landcare groups will also be available.

Saturday’s program features ‘Breakfast with the Birds’, hosted by ANU’s Sustainable Farms Program, before attendees embark on a bus tour showcasing landcare action in the North East.

The event follows on from March 23’s Landcare Professionals Forum, which provides a professional development opportunity for people employed as coordinators, facilitators and project staff.

Local dragon boat club scores bronze medals

THRILLED Beechworth Golden Serpent Club teams took out bronze medals at the Victorian State Championships held at Carrum Downs last weekend.

Some 32 members in different teams paddled hard in 200 metre, 500 metre and two kilometre races in women’s, mixed and open (men) categories.

“We brought home two bronze medals - one in the women’s two kilometre race and one in the Senior A mixed 20s 500 metre one,” head coach Kellie Jones said.

“We produced some really fantastic times in our races which is a testament to how hard our members train each week and how well they have developed in strength and techniques over the past two years.

“This was the first regatta for some of our members too.

“Our team consists of juniors and seniors who race together in the one boat where we have also built up a really nice camaraderie amongst our members.

“Everyone is so supportive of each other, and we have a lot of fun.”

The score follows medals won when the Golden Serpent club crews competed at the Lu-

nar New Year Regatta at Docklands in January.

“It’s a fun, colourful regatta that celebrates Lunar New Year including traditional Lion Dancing as well,” Kellie said.

“We had six crews entered in 200m races where we took out three trophies - silver for the Senior A open 10s, silver for the Senior A women’s 20s and bronze for the Senior A mixed 20s.”

Kellie estimated more than 20 teams had entered from across Victoria with hundreds of spectators.

“Our amazing juniors raced with the Dragon Boat of Victoria Junior State team against corporate teams too, and gave the Navy team a real run for their money,” she said.

“This was great practice for them for the upcoming Australian Championships where they will represent Victoria in the junior category on the state verses state day.

The next six weeks will see paddlers training hard on Lake Sambell as the club heads toward the Australian Championships, to be held from April 20 to 24 at Gateway Lakes in Wodonga.

24/7 police presence a balancing act

By RYAN MALCOLM LOCAL stakeholders will revisit a proposed 24/7 police presence in Beechworth later this year, following an outpouring of concern from local residents late last week.

Indigo Shire Mayor Sophie Price said the prospect of implementing an all-hours response at one of the shire’s towns had been the subject of discussion in recent months, and would be addressed again at a May meeting between local agencies and police.

Beechworth residents flocked

to the Beechworth Community Facebook page last weekend, after police were required to travel from Wodonga to respond to an alleged assault in the Beechworth township on Friday night.

Concerned locals noted police had been helpful, but that the alleged perpetrator had left the scene well before police arrived from the border.

Ms Price said the ‘police local safety committee’ had been running for 12 months, and saw shire representatives meet with police, Parks Victoria, local health services and other stakeholders on a quarterly basis to discuss police

resourcing across the shire.

“I had noted that discussion on Facebook and immediately thought the first point of call should be to raise that at our next meeting in May,” she said.

“We think we’ve got a good level of resourcing in Indigo Shire - the police don’t want to advertise when they’re not going to be at those stations and don’t want to focus on when they might not have a presence.

“Beechworth in particular has a really great staff which are really well entrenched in the community and that was reflected in the Facebook commentary.”

Wangaratta, Wodonga, and Benalla are currently the only towns in the North East with 24/7 police stations.

Ms Price said it was important the committee discussed how best to provide comprehensive resourcing, particularly during busy tourism periods.

“That doesn’t mean we wouldn’t advocate and ask the question to (police) about what it would look like if there could be a 24/7 resource for Beechworth, but we have previously had some discussions about what an increase in resourcing would look like for any particular town and

the answer has been that there would have to be a reduction of a resource for another town,” she said.

“It’s always a delicate balance - we will absolutely have the discussion with them but they will always give us a very measured response, and we can just talk about some of those really tricky times like long weekends where we might need to talk about and be more dynamic with the police presence.

“They’re (police) up for the discussion - we have a great relationship with them and we could easily do that.”

A COMMITMENT to integrity and dedication to serving her electorate has seen Indi independent MP Helen Haines awarded the 2022 McKinnon Prize in Political Leadership.

Dr Haines and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong, were earlier this week lauded for their commitment to collaboration and relationship-building in the political sphere, jointly bestowed the prestigious award by a selection committee made up of distinguished Australian leaders.

The Indi representative’s commitment to integrity in politics and dedication to serving the electorate by connecting her constituency to her national policy work, were acknowledged as driving factors behind her nomination for the award.

The selection panel was said to have recognised Dr Haines’ work as a “community-driven” leader on the national stage, and noted her longterm vision and ability to build consensus had defined the national discussion around integrity in politics over many years.

Dr Haines expressed her gratitude

to the constituents she represents in accepting the Emerging Political Leader of the Year Award.

“It is the honour of a lifetime to represent the people of Indi in the Federal Parliament, and it is the people of Indi who have spurred me on in my work to improve integrity, accountability and transparency in federal politics,” she said.

“The establishment of the National Anti-Corruption Commission is the most significant integrity reform at a federal level in more than 40 years and I am incredibly proud to have played a role in that, and look forward to continuing to work to improve integrity and transparency in politics.

“I also look forward to continue working to improve healthcare in regional and rural Australia, tackling the local housing crisis and implementing action on climate change that benefits regional Australia.

“I pay tribute to the Susan McKinnon Foundation and their work to improve Australia’s democracy and to all of the prize nominees.”

Stanley artists showcase works

By CORAL COOKSLEY A UNIQUE cultural event showcased the creativity of local Stanley artists last weekend at the Soldiers Memorial Hall.

Titled ‘Beyond the Bends’ depicting the quant village’s location with its creatives, local artist Chris Dormer officially opened the exhibition on Saturday night.

“In this ‘post COVID era’ there is the need and a chance for an ‘arts revival’ after a long, lean time when opportunities for artists to meet, work, learn, share and exhibit their work have been limited,” she said. w Ms Dormer in her speech delivered an interesting account of new research from the Australia Institute’s Centre for Future Work written by senior economist Alison Pennington and Monash University’s Ben Eltham.

Among revelations about the ongoing, devastating impact of COVID-19 on Australia’s arts and entertainment sector, the research had also provided a series of recommendations to government that would reboot the creative sector following the crisis.

One of three key research findings had been despite years of significant funding pressures and policy neglect, the arts and entertainment sector contributed $17 billion in GDP to the Australian economy in 2018-19.

Ms Dormer said new hope abounded for the cultural sector with the release of the new National Cultural Policy in January this year, where the Australian Government had developed a five-year plan to revive the arts in Australia. v Ms Dormer thanked the Stanley artists for their exhibited work.

“Supporting local artists helps them to continue to create, show their work and share their creativity which connects us all,” she said.

Exhibition coordinator Janet Sutherland said 13 local Stanley artists exhibited with mediums across painting, photography, sculpture, ceramic and mixed media, textile, and printmaking.

“The exhibition gives the artists exposure and a chance to exhibit their work to the wider community too,” she said.

“Exhibited works also shows a lifelong commitment to their art practice.”

ORGANISERS of Wangaratta’s first ever Pride Fair Day say the “overwhelming” response from the community vindicates the need for the event, and importance of it continuing each year.

An estimated 500 people enjoyed the colourful celebration, which included 30 stallholders, in King George Gardens on Friday afternoon.

Allison Winters, president of LINE (LGBTQIA+ In the North East) Wangaratta Inc which organised the event, said the roll-up far exceeded expectations.

“We were hoping for around 100 people but we had 500...it was overwhelming,” Allison said.

“I think Friday demonstrated the need for such an event in our community and we want to make it bigger and better next year.

“It was wonderful for Rainbow families, same sex couples and LGBTQIA+ people and allies to join together and connect with the wider community to celebrate arts, mu-

sic, dance and other live performances.

“We don’t see enough of the LGBTQIA+ culture in the community.”

Victorian Minister for Equality, Harriet Shing, was among the crowd enjoying the festivities.

She said Wangaratta’s inaugural Pride Fair Day as a “crucial day” in helping promote community diversity within the region.

“The relationship forged with LINE Wangaratta and the Rural City of Wangaratta has been a really wonderful way to include people, celebrate our diversity and to bring people together to have fun, connect and explore more opportunities,” Ms Shing said.

“This also demonstrates very clearly our rural and regional communities across the entire state are so welcoming, so inclusive, vibrant and are really wonderful places to live and raise families.”

The event received $6894 in funding through the State Government’s Pride and Festivals fund, an annual funding program operating since 2018.

Quercus celebrating our local region

By CORAL COOKSLEY ENCOURAGING community members to connect with each other is at the heart of a series of picnics run by the local neighbourhood centre Quercus Beechworth.

On Sunday the second picnic ‘Picnic and Paint’ is being held at the Town Hall Gardens from 1pm to 4pm supported by the Beechworth Arts Council and the local CWA Branch.

Geared more towards an adult audience, Quercus Beechworth community engagement coordinator Jess Oldmeadow said everyone is welcome to join in.

“We’re going to have things for the kids to do, and an art facilitator will be guiding us through watercolour painting too,” she said.

“We’ll have all resources available paints, paper, tables and chairs where everything will be set up.

“People can just come along grab a seat if they would like to paint.

“If they don’t want to paint, they’re welcome to come along for a chat and enjoy some snacks.”

Jess said the first picnic recently held at Lake Sambell with sandcastle building had been a great success, with a crowd of around 200 community members.

“The picnics are nice opportunities for the community to connect without any expectations,” she said.

“People don’t have to pack, bring or pay for anything.”

‘Cricket Fun’ at Beechworth Primary School on Wednesday, March 29 from 4pm to 7pm will be the final picnic.

“It’s more backyard family cricket and anyone can come along to have some fun whether you can throw and catch a ball or not,” Jess said.

Forensic pathology had exciting moments for Terry

TERRY Schultz was born in Adelaide. Working in different locations throughout his medical career, he lived in Shepparton for two years when at the Goulburn Base Hospital followed by six years on a farm at the northern end of the Warby Ranges while at Wangaratta Base Hospital. Another move followed to a farm in the scrub between Chiltern and Eldorado when at Dorevitch Pathology in Albury Wodonga where he clocked up 26 years until retirement. His youngest son took over the farm running the Dorper breed of sheep and has continued tree planting as well. Terry has lived in Beechworth for the last two years.

What did you do workwise?

I studied medicine in Adelaide, followed by specialising in anatomical pathology. This involved providing an autopsy service at the base hospitals and a biopsy reporting service to hospitals, surgeons and general practitioners.

What brought you to your career roles?

It was almost an accident. After two years of general practice, I returned to the hospital environment to study obstetrics, gynaecology, and anaesthetics, but was invited by a staff specialist to apply for the surgical pathology position.

What did you love about your work?

Mostly I enjoyed the daily problem solving, the challenge of recognising different and sometimes very rare tumours and conditions.

Every day was different, and always interesting.

It was a privilege to work with dedicated and intelligent scientists, and to meet with particularly clever colleagues who always taught one something new. Forensic pathology provided some interesting cases including a few murders with a few exciting moments.

What do you do in the community?

I have been a volunteer driver for the Red Cross but became redundant due to COVID-19 and advancing age - their definition, not mine.

I am in awe of the people in the community who are so ready to help others and expect no reward for doing so.

Terry Schultz, Beechworth Is there an important community issue that you think needs addressing?

I think education is one of the most important issues in our country. Too many of our young are not getting the depth of education which once existed. Also we need to better fund research in all areas of science and technology, including medicine. We are falling behind, and suffer a brain drain to other countries.

What do you see as one of the most important current world issues?

The most important world issue in my opinion is the inability of people to live harmoniously together. It has been a problem since Homo sapiens formed more than a single tribe, and I see no long-term answer.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo Shire (past or present), or was already here, who would that be, what would you show them, and why?

I would like British evolutionary biologist and author, Richard Dawkins to visit Beechworth.

He would be shown the attractions with which we are all familiar, including the architecture, gardens, forests, and walking and riding trails, as well as native fauna.

What book are you reading?

I am reading for the fourth time ‘San Michele’

by Axel Munthe. He first published this in the late 1920s and the book has never been out of print since then. It contains so much wisdom and philosophy of life. He built a house on the highest reaches of Anacapri - the second town on Italy’s Isle of Capri. The house still stands as a museum.

Barefoot bowls a hit

Pennant season begins

A BAREFOOT bowls event run for the first time in three years has received a fantastic local community response.

The five week-long Friday night competition finished last week with a ramp up of more contests to follow this year.

The event had drawn a crowd of more than 100 people on a weekly basis.

Event coordinator Chris Fitzpatrick said 56 players on the green played at any one time with another 60 to 70 volunteers, substitute players, sponsors and spectators on all nights.

He said the successful fundraiser meant the competition could run for the next 12 months.

“It’s the Beechworth Bowls Club’s 120th year anniversary and we are doing our best to ensure we have a bowls club in Beechworth for many years.”

“In moving forward and with such great interest from the general community we plan to hold these events in both spring and summer.”

Capped at 14 teams mostly from Beechworth, Mr Fitzpatrick said the next competition is almost full leading to a format tweak to cater for as many players as possible.

He said barefoot bowls was a fun activity for socialising, meeting new people, and an alternative to normal weekend activities all based around a low impact competitive sport open to all ages, groups and skill levels.

He said most of Beechworth Bowling Club’s 35 members helped over the five-week competition to ensure the event’s success.

“The age range for this barefoot bowls competition was between 18 and 70 years old with an equal mix of

male and females.”

“Our youngest Bowling Club member is 14 years old and we have a senior aged 93 years old which highlights the broad spectrum of players’ ages who compete at bowls.”

A perpetual trophy was awarded to the competition winners where it will be displayed at The Nicholas Hotel until the next competition.

Mr Fitzpatrick said the club is on the lookout for new members to play on weekends or for the weekday

Bright future all around

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN THE Beechworth Wanderers ended their season last weekend showing plenty of grit in their run chase at Norm Minns Oval against the Wangaratta Magpies, but it wasn’t enough, falling short by 120 runs.

The Wanderers battled hard to find themselves at 4/94 going into the last 20 overs of the day, but when

Wanderers taking gp positives out of p promising g WDCA season captain Brenton Surrey’s resistance was broken, the wickets came in clumps to eventually total 104 off 70 overs.

Surrey said although the team couldn’t finish the season the way they would have hoped he took some pride in his team’s ability to value their wicket.

“They bowled pretty well and some pretty good lines and set some good fields which starved us of opportunity,” he said.

“I think we were patient enough, we fell into a bit of a defensive mindset and probably missed out on three or four balls but credit to them, they were pretty tight

with their bowling and that’s probably why they finished equal top of the ladder.”

Along with Surrey, Cam Fendyk (29) and Clancy Ellett (18) both occupied the crease with the bat to finish their seasons on a good note.

Surrey said the team’s performance on the season as

a whole exceeded many expectations, including their own, finishing in fifth and missing finals by just seven points with a relatively young side.

“We were competitive most weeks and hopefully going forward that holds us in pretty good stead,” he said.

“There was certainly a couple more winnable games which is always disappointing when you look back on it, but I think we’ve had some guys who have had some valuable time in that grade to improve.

“Cam Fendyk had a fantastic year all-round after having a year off last year, so to come back and perform the way he did he surpassed his own expectations.”
