year would be the last recipients to have received them at that time following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 last Friday.

A humbled Iris said she remained stunned in receiving the award that acknowledged her volunteering.

“I’m just one of many people in our community who volunteer and it’s all about team work,” she said.

“My grandmother who I grew up with as she lived next door taught me there is no ‘I’ in the team and that’s my motto as everyone is part of a team.

“My grandmother looked after me as my mum worked and she was a great volunteer herself.

“My grandfather’s family came to Australia in 1830 and my grandmother was a staunch Irish Catholic who volunteered a lot for the church.

“I remember some of my first volunteering with her to help out at events when I was about eight years old.”

Iris said she was thrilled someone in the town thought she was worthy to be nominated for the award.

“It’s great to volunteer as there is personal satisfaction, its rewarding, friendships are made and you are always giving back to the community to help make a difference.”

Iris has been a volunteer in the town since moving to Beechworth with her family in 1988, with more than 25 different volunteer roles across various organisations over the years.

Iris Mannik presented with Order of Australia Medal The presentation became an extra special occasion as a vehicle breakdown on the way caused the excited recipient to miss the formal award presentations.

“We continued to make our way to Melbourne with a hire car but arrived too late and the Governor General said she was not sending me back to Beechworth after coming all that way without her presenting the award to me,” Iris said.

Iris said she had been struck by the Governor General being so gracious.

“She is such a credit to Victoria and to our country and one feels so comfortable in her presence,” she said.

Iris received a Victorian Premier Volunteer’s Champion Award presented by the Governor of Victoria in 2018, a Beechworth Lions Club appreciation award w in 2015, Beechworth Lion of the Year for 2015-16, an Indigo Shire Australia Day Certificate of Achievement Award in 2009 as well as a Keep Australia Beautiful Dame Phyllis award in 2007.

AUSTRALIAN jazz great Ken Schroder on saxophone, accomplished trumpeter Gianni Marinucci with other talented fellow musicians will entertain music lovers next week at the Stanley Memorial Hall in a fundraiser organised by Stanley Rural Community Incorporated (SRCI) .

Pianist Steve Grant, double bass master Dean Adison, and vocalist and songwriter Rebecca Barnard will join the musicians.

The hall will be decked out to create an intimate atmosphere of a sophisticated jazz club where the crowd can tap to the sounds of swing and blues.

The fundraiser is to help the small Stanley community run post office staffed by volunteers.

SRCI member Tony McDonald said the fifth jazz night over recent years has become a much loved event and was back due to demand.

Dr McDonald said the Stanley community took on the post office 12 years ago following the closure of the general store that ran the postal operation.

“To keep the postal service going, the community has needed to be proactive with activities such as the jazz night to generate funds,” he said.

Dr McDonald said two musicians involved in different ensembles over the years at jazz nights have strong family and friendship links to the small Stanley village.

“Blues, latin, hot jazz, cool jazz, we’ll entertain, even mesmerise the audience with songs, some familiar and some slightly off the beaten track gems with intriguing lyrics.”

“We want the audience to have a smile on its collective face at the end of a great night’s entertainment.”

“Although we live in the Big Smoke, we have friendships and connections all over the place and my memories include my

friendship with the late Graeme Osborne.”

Local student competes in snowsports championships held at Mount Perisher WIDER COVERAGE: The government has expanded the area able to receive a Japanese encephalitis vaccine as warmer months approach.

Increasing access to the Japanese encephalitis vaccine MORE Victorians in regional areas where mosquitoes are prevalent will be able to receive a Japanese encephalitis vaccine ahead of the warmer months and the possible re-emergence of this virus.

The newly expanded criteria takes in anyone who lives or usually works in the local government areas of Indigo, Campaspe, Gannawarra, Greater Shepparton, Loddon, Mildura, Moira, Swan Hill, Wodonga and Towong, and who are aged 50 years and over and spend at least four hours per day outdoors - whether for work or recreation.

The criteria now includes people in Towong Shire, along with people aged 50 years and over and those who are spending several hours outdoors for any reason in all of these areas.

“This expansion means even more people can access the vaccine ahead of the warmer months to protect themselves,” Victoria’s Deputy Chief Health Officer

Associate Professor Deborah Friedman said.

“The vaccine is available free for people who meet these criteria. It will be available from select GPs, local public health units, including some COVID-19 vaccination hubs, community pharmacies, and local councils.”

Japanese encephalitis virus can cause a rare, potentially serious infection of the brain, and is spread to humans via mosquito bites. Most people who develop infection will have no symptoms, but one per cent can develop a serious brain infection.

Earlier in 2022, Victoria recorded its first-ever case of Japanese encephalitis virus infection - which normally occurs in many parts of southeast Asia, China, Papua New Guinea and the Torres Strait.

The eligibility criteria for the Japanese encephalitis virus vaccine continues to be based on those most at risk of contracting this virus.

This further expansion comes in response to Victoria receiving more vaccine sup-

ply, along with an analysis of the locations of affected pig premises, transmission sites responsible for human infection, and mosquitoes infected with Japanese encephalitis virus. It aligns with critieria in New South Wales.

The Department of Health, in collaboration with the Ovens Murray, Goulburn Valley and Loddon Mallee LPHUs, is currently conducting a serosurvey for Japanese encephalitis, to better understand the spread of this virus in northern Victoria and risk factors for infection.

“Getting vaccinated is one important step people can take, along with simple actions like wearing long, loosefitting clothing outdoors, using mosquito repellents containing picaridin or DEET on all exposed skin, and limiting outdoor activity if lots of mosquitoes are about,” Associate Professor Friedman added.

YEAR 7 student Liana France represented Beechworth Secondary College at the Australian Interschool Snowsports Championships held at Mount Perisher last week between September 6 to 11.

After qualifying in the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships in late August, the young skier attended the Snow Sports Australia Alpine Carnival - a youth development program conducted

by Snow Australia in partnership with the Australian Institute of Sport, and the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia.

The program focused on skill assessments and specific race development.

Competing in Alpine Giant Slalom at the nationals Liana said the competition had been fierce.

“Although I didn’t make the podium it was a great opportunity to compete on

the national stage against the best in the country,” she said.

“This is the first year that I qualified for the nationals, and it was great to be racing again after two years out due to COVID. “Competing in the snowsport nationals was a great opportunity to meet and compete with a dedicated group of athletes where I’ve made friends for life.

“My goals are to ski out the rest of the 2022 snow season, before focusing on a ‘dryland training’ - a sports specific strength and conditioning training program to prepare me for the next ski race season.

“I would like to thank Beechworth Secondary College support especially principal Patricia Broom for the schools snowsports team.”

Public holiday to mourn queen AUSTRALIANS will get a one-off public holiday on the national day of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II later this month.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced earlier this week that Thursday, September 22 would be a holiday to coincide with a memorial service for the Queen.

“It will be a one-off national public holi-

day to allow people to pay their respects for the passing of Queen Elizabeth,” he said.

Mr Albanese said he had written to advise state and territory leaders of the holiday.

Victorians already have Friday, September 23 gazetted as a public holiday for the AFL grand final parade in Melbourne.

Hats off for mental health research ROTARIANS on Saturday helped lift the lid on mental health in raising awareness of Rotary Australia’s national fundraising campaign for mental health research next month.

District 9790 E-Rotary club members Kathryn Chivers from Beechworth and Myrtleford’s Clive Walker held a stall for the club at the Beechworth Kiosk near the roundabout to promote the annual campaign ‘Lift the Lid for Mental Health’.

Rotary’s ‘Hat Day’ on October 10 held during the mental health awareness month is part of the campaign too.

Mr Walker said with mental health a significant issue, every advantage needs to be taken to help people overcome difficulties.

He said funds raised by the club will be directed to Rotary Australia.

Ms Chivers said people showed interest with conversations at the kiosk with many donating towards the cause besides buying homemade tasty treats, pickles and jams among items sold.

The campaign founded by Australian Rotary Health vice chair Greg Ross began six years ago in partnership with Rotary Clubs of Victoria and then extended to all Rotary Clubs across the nation.

All funds raised for this year’s hat day event goes directly to mental health research.

VETERAN car enthusiast Melbourne’s Michael Holding cranked up his 1910 Buick for last weekend’s showcase around the shire of 28 veteran cars built prior to 1919.

Inclement weather didn’t prevent the Veteran Car Club of Australia (Victoria) members from the having a great time.

Mr Holding said the Buick had been the answer to Henry Ford’s Model T Ford.

“It has very similar specification to a Ford T model and is fantastic,” he said.

“We’ve had it for about six years and brought it in from Idaho in America.

“The weather has been challenging but now that it has stopped raining, we’re en-

joying all the magnificent roads and scenery around these areas.

“We’ve had a ball as we always do and I’ve been to Chiltern several times.”

The three day club event itinerary stretched from Everton, Markwood, Tarrawingee, Tallangatta, Yackandandah, Allans Flat, Tangambalanga and Wodonga to Mt Beauty via Stanley, Myrtleford and Ovens.

Stops in Beechworth, Yackandandah and Chiltern had been made for car lovers to check out the historical cars.

Beechworth Lions Club cooked up a storm for dinner held at the Servicemen’s Memorial Hall for the Beechworth-based group.

Navigating the spectre of COVID-19 has added an extra strain onto the demands of an already exhausted staff.

They continue with their extraordinary commitment to care despite these trying times.

Their unstinting generosity, kindness and commitment to the care of all in their charge has been my privilege to witness.

They have given our mother endless patience and understanding.

Church service honours the late Queen Elizabeth II

By CORAL COOKSLEY AS people across the region felt the passing of Queen Elizabeth II aged 96 last Friday at 3.30am AEST, a moving service held on Sunday at the Anglican Christ Church in Beechworth has been among many tributes paid to the monarch across the shire.

Father Gunnar Rippon said the Sunday’s service had been the church’s usual Sunday sung eucharist but with a focus in honouring the late Queen Elizabeth.

“Prayers of thanksgiving were offered for her unstinting devotion and commitment to her role as Queen of the people of the Commonwealth of Nations,” Fr Rippon said.

“We recognised her Christian faith which was pivotal in her life of service.

“We prayed for her family, for comfort in their grief but gave thanks for King Charles III as he

begins his reign as the monarch.”

Fr Rippon said congregation members helped with scripture readings and led prayers.

Around 25 people attended the service where visitors from as far away as Queensland had joined in as well.

Last Friday on the day of the Queen’s death, although traditional on such occasions, members from the bellringers team on their own initiative tolled a bell from 12 noon to 1pm where the bell rang 96 times marking Queen Elizabeth’s age as well as 70 times for her years of reign.

Beechworth bellringer Graeme Heyes said on the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II he rang the bells as one of the team of six for the occasion at St Peter’s Church in Ballarat.

Last Friday he rang the bells as a team member at St Matthews in Albury.

“I felt privileged to have contributed to both the beginning and the end of the Queen’s

“I understand that there is only one other Australian bellringer who has done likewise.”

Fr Rippon said if a decision is made to hold a dedicated service for the Queen on Monday, a notice

will be placed on the Beechworth community Facebook page.

“For most of us she has been our only Monarch; an unprecedented and most likely never to be repeated 70 years of service.

“For me personally I was on a military police traffic control post on the entourage royal route into Duntroon in 1988.

“I was the only person in the middle off nowhere and as the Queen passed in the roller I threw a big boxer, that’s a salute.

“Her Majesty simply smiled and gave me one of those famous royal waves.”

Mr Tilley said because the Victorian Parliament, unlike other state jurisdictions, doesn’t recognise the passing of the crown to heirs, members were required to swear an allegiance to the King before they could participate in the Legislative Assembly.

After the November state election that will be required again.

Best wine from around the nation uncorked for judging at Rutherglen

By CORAL COOKSLEY TOPAQUES have been in the spotlight in this year’s Rutherglen Wine Show (RWS) held in the town’s agricultural showground’s Henderson Pavillion.

RWS committee chair Chris Pfeiffer said alternate wine varieties such as Barbera and Fiano showed well too while a highlight among others to follow had been the Topaques with a masterclass given.

One of the longest running wines shows in Australian history, this year marks the highly regarded national wine event being 134 years old.

The Australian Fortified Wine Show, which is the largest one of its kind in Australia, runs as an incorporated part of the event too.

The show from Monday to Thursday this week drew 1000 entries from around the nation and the region where judges from NSW, Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria tackled tastings with judge chair, Gapsted Wine’s Andrew Santarossa.

“With entries from around the Australia, we’ve had good support from wineries in North East Victoria as well,” Mr Pfeiffer said.

“The Fortified Wine Show had a most comprehensive range of entries without

peer in Australia.”

Mr Pfeiffer said wine shows helped maintain and improve the quality of Australian wine, as well as having benefits for exhibitor and consumer alike.

“At the Rutherglen Wine Show we focus on a benchmarking approach that can be a boost to marketing if exhibitors do well,” he said.

Last year COVID impacts prevented public events with a full program planned for this year but due to the national day of mourning for the late Queen Elizabeth 11, an award presentation set to take place next Thursday has been cancelled.

The public tasting is going

ahead on Friday, September 23 from 6.30pm to 10pm when wine lovers can taste wines with a selection of canapes from one of Rutherglen’s gourmet restaurants.

“The public tasting is a wonderful opportunity for the public to taste the award winning wines and improve their knowledge, apart from having a good night out,” Mr Pfeiffer said.

The annual September wine show is a combined Rutherglen Agricultural Society and Winemakers of Rutherglen event.

A YOUNG local hockey player has achieved a dream to play for Victoria in the national hockey championships being held in Tasmania with help from the Beechworth Lions Club.

The club held a sell-out sausage sizzle last Saturday outside the IGA store where 13-year-old Grace Brown with her mum Rachael Kerkvliet helped out to serve generous

community members.

Lions’ member Iris Mannik said helping young people to reach their goals especially when they are state representatives should be something where the community can help Grace said helping out at the sausage sizzle had been a great experience in meeting people.

“Everyone has been really generous with donations received too,” she said.

With less than 18 days to go, an excited Grace heads to Tasmania at the end of this month for the National Championships being held in Hobart.

Selected into the Victorian Hockey Academy, Grace will play in the Victorian state team in matches between September 28 and October 4.

Rachael said she appreciated the community and Lions Club’s unconditional and generous support.

She said help given showed Grace what it takes to make a helpful community where Grace will be able to give back.

“It means everything to us to help Grace get to Tasmania,” she said.

The U13 Carnival at the National Championships will be livestreamed at www. livehockey.com.au where there may be a subscription fee with the event advertised closer to the date.

SIOBHAN Pilkington was born in Northern Ireland and grew up in a town on the border between Belfast and Dublin.

She married an Australian in Ireland, moved to Australia 11 years ago and has lived in Beechworth since 2018.

What’s your job?

Coordinator of volunteers and social enterprises for Quercus Beechworth.

What brought you to this role?

I had been travelling to work out of town and really wanted to be connected to the communityI live in.

My background is in human resources therefore the responsibilities of the role really appealed to me, and the timing was perfect for me to join Quercus.

I feel very fortunate to be part of a community organisation that does great things.

What do you love about your job?

The variety of the role. The board, volunteer and staff team are dedicated to achieving Quercus Beechworth’s purpose, vision and mission.

I am surrounded by a diverse team of people striving to make a positive difference in our community.

What do you do in the community?

I volunteer in various ways such as at the local school my children attend and at events that happen in Beechworth.

I am also registering to volunteer to visit the elderly at home and in aged care facilities.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

Sadly over time the level of crime in the area seems to be increasing which is concerning.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

There is no easy answer but I believe we all have a responsibility to our community.

We should look out for each other and care passionately about what happens in our community.

The recently released Crime Prevention Strategy recognises that community holds the expertise, knowledge and ideas to design the solutions that are right for them.

At the heart of the strategy is investing in the

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

I have a few, while there certainly has been progress over the years regarding disability rights, many countries lack strong protections.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), over one billion people have some form of disability.

Half can’t afford healthcare.

People with disability are also more likely to live in poverty than those without a disability, have poorer health outcomes, and have less access to work and education opportunities.

I applaud the progress made by organisations working to ensure equality for those with disabilities, however, I believe the world has a long way to go.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

I would love my family to visit from Ireland.

My husband Ben flew my parents over to Australia as a surprise for a significant birthday a number of years ago.

I would love them to return. I have two brothers and a sister, nieces and nephews yet to visit.

I would show them our own historical town, the beautiful surrounding towns and the wineries. I would introduce them to Australian wildlife.

What book are you reading?

“The Last Train to London” by Meg Waite Clayton.

The book is based on true events and tells the story of a woman who, working with British and Austrian Jews, rescues thousands of children from Nazi-occupied Vienna.

Preparations are already in place for next year with coaching positions filled in all grades except for the under 14 football for next year.

Fendyk said the club will continue to focus on recruiting local talent that have been playing elsewhere in recent years

to keep its loyal fanbase engaged with senior football.

“We see that having a local team is what creates that local town interest, if you had a team full of people that no one knew, then you’re going to get the support of people from Melbourne that no one knows,” he said.

“We’ll need a few top ups of course, there’s not many 206cm key forwards floating around town, but the fact is we’ve got a good bunch of locals who are good enough to play at some cases O&M senior level and we’re hoping to get them back.”

A grade, A reserve cricket fixture revealed THE Wangaratta and District Cricket Association released the first look at what the 2022/23 cricket season will look like, with the A grade and A reserve fixtures w released.

Fixtures for B grade, C grade, and the jjunior competitions will be released in coming weeks.

The regular season for the A and A reserve grades will consist of 14 matches, with eight one dayers and six two day w matches.

The first block of two day cricket will be in rounds four and five, covering the month of November.

The season will run from October 15, 2022, with the grand final set for March 25, 2023, with a break for Christmas and New Year from December 17 to January 7.

In round one of the A grade, Benalla host Beechworth, Yarrawonga play City Colts on the Bill O’Callaghan Oval at the Barr Reserve, Wangaratta Magpies take on Delatite in Mansfield, and Ovens Valley United go up against reigning premiers Rovers United Bruck at McNamara Reserve.

BEECHWORTH Bushrangers’ fairytale season may have finished with a crushing loss to Kiewa Sandy Creek in the preliminary final at Sandy Creek on Saturday, but the season overall was a massive success.

The Bushies went down 17.13 (115) to 7.10 (52) but celebrated their dramatic rise up the ranks this season.

After trailing by four goals at half time the Bushrangers used

an inspiring third quarter kicking with a breeze to get within a goal before the final break and set up what looked to be a grandstand finish.

But the Hawks flexed their muscles, kicking the last nine goals of the match and holding Beechworth scoreless in the last quarter to book a place in the grand final against Chiltern this week.

Tom Cartledge fought hard in the midfield while Alessandro Belci created plenty of opportu-

nities for his team.

Club president Adam Fendyk didn’t want the loss to hamper what’s been a great year of improvement for the senior football side.

“It’s been a fantastic season, we got to play 21 games of footy, won a final and it certainly means we’re up and about,” he said.

“Our guys in the seniors in particularly kept us well and truly entertained during the year.

“We saw a development across all our grades of football and lots

of individual developments to our players in the seniors.”

In their first finals appearance in a decade, Fendyk said support for the senior team across finals and during the year allowed the team to reach new heights.

“When you think about some of the wins we’ve had during the year, we were able to beat Kiewa for the first time in a long time; we beat Chiltern in front of a bumper crowd in Indigenous Round,” he said.
