AN EXCITED Rokia Diallo–Gladstone named dux of Beechworth Secondary College at an impressive award presentation night for students this week received a prestigious VCE Baccalaureate and a nomination for the Melbourne University Principal’s Scholarship too.

The event held at the college on Wednesday night celebrated another year of outstanding achievements by students across all years.

Principal Patricia Broom said Rokia had been a model student throughout her secondary schooling, having been rewarded with an ATAR score of 87.05.

The principal said Rokia had been involved in programs stretching from a Sparks Engineering camp in year 10 to the Model UN in French last

year and CHES this year.

Enhancing her learning skills this year through the Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES) in Melbourne, Rokia undertook a first–year university subject in biological sciences with Federation University.

“Her work in biological sciences was recognised as outstanding by their standards and they were so impressed with her quiet focus and ability,” Ms Broom said.

Rokia said it was fantastic meeting and befriending other like-minded students while being able to undertake “lots of pracs”.

Park plans endorsed

By RYAN MALCOLM MASTERPLANS outlining proposed future developments at four park spaces across Indigo Shire are set to be placed on public exhibition until early next year, after receiving unanimous support from councillors at this week’s ordinary meeting.

The plans map out proposed improvements to Yackandandah Sports Park, Tangambalanga’s Coulston Park, Rutherglen’s Barkly Park and the Allans Flat Recreation Reserve, having been commissioned as part of a $70,000 project, $40,000 of which was contributed by council.

Cr Peter Croucher and Emmerick Teissl both welcomed the documents, with Cr Croucher noting each had already been the subject of extensive engagement within their respective communities.

“Recreation reserves are indeed very important community assets and must always be looking towards the future to maintain and extend for the need of the future generations,” Cr Croucher said.

“All of the plans give very specific guidelines and future opportunities for our reserves,” Cr Teissl added.

“They’re also one of the important pieces of work that can be done for them because it does guide funding and whereabouts we can get funding opportunities for our communities and parks.”

MAJOR PLANS: Rutherglen’s Barkly Park was one of four recreation reserves subjected to a new masterplan study.

Council director of community and economic development Sally Rice said council would further investigate solar power opportunities at each of the reserves, and provisions for the reserves to be used in times of emergency would be considered.

She said direct users and community groups of each reserve would be sent the masterplans directly, while other community members could view the plans online.

At Yackandandah, works are proposed to develop a playground north of the existing clubrooms, expand parking for the Epic Trail mountain bike trailhead, improve amenities and parking for the equestrian

park and implement floodlights for future evening training sessions on the sports field.

A pump track development is also proposed at the park’s south east entrance, which the masterplan says would provide “a resource for children to develop skills required in mountain bike trail riding” in proximity to the Epic trailhead.

The Tangambalanga masterplan outlines major improvements to netball and tennis and facilities, as well as the extension of the overhead roof structure of the existing clubrooms and amenities to provide additional shelter.

Beechworth Secondary College dux lauded for outstanding achievement ■ From front page

Every year the principal is invited to nominate students for the Melbourne University’s Principal’s Scholarship worth $5000 with supported entry to the university upon a course offer.

“Students must be considering Melbourne University, be a high achieving academic student, and show strong leadership potential,” she said.

The VCE Baccalaureate received instead of a VCE Certificate recognised Rokia’s outstanding achievements in studying a higher-level mathematics subject, a language and a high mark in English.

Rokia said switching her study between subjects each hour had been a recipe for success.

“I also really enjoyed studying with others, especially in study groups like we did for

maths,” Rokia said.

The annual Sparks Engineering camp attended in Year 10 at Melbourne University has a program aim for students to experience and discover Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics pathways.

“The Sparks camp expanded my understanding of all the different ways that science is used professionally and in everyday life and was one of the ‘sparks’ that fuelled my now passion for the study,” she said.

Rokia had also participated in the Kwong Lee Dow Scholars Program - an academic enrichment program to support high-achieving secondary school students.

It comes as no surprise that Rokia’s favourite subjects this year at school were maths and biology, which she said was also cultivated through

the enthusiasm of her teachers.

“I like maths for its precision and how easy it is compared to other subjects,” she said.

“It demonstrates the care, commitment and never-ending support they give us.”

Rokia said she loved her time at Beechworth Secondary College with her friends.

“I love them all so dearly and this year wouldn’t have been possible without their continuous support, advice and laughs,” she said.

“Coming to school every day was made possible by them.

“From the ones who I’ve known since prep and everyone who’s joined along the way, I couldn’t imagine this year without them.”

Rokia has her fingers crossed in being offered a place in the Bachelor of Science at Melbourne University.

FORMER Wimbledon tennis ace Jelena Dokic drew a 230-strong audience to the Servicemen’s Memorial Hall when she visited Beechworth on Saturday as part of a regional promotional book tour for her latest book ‘Fearless.’

Beechworth Books partnered with Indigo Shire library to bring Jelena to the town, allowing the audience the chance to hear from one of Australia’s most interesting and successful tennis players.

Jelena has penned two books the first – ‘Unbreakable’ – a bestselling personal history of abuse that shocked the world, which was followed by ‘Fearless’ about reclaiming life and the power of sharing stories.

In an introduction to the audience, Beechworth Books’ Charles Dean said Jelena talks about having the strength to stand up for what she believed in and being strong enough to ask for help when needed.

Ceasing professional play in 2014, Jelena kept a low profile for a few years following her retirement.

She steadily increased her work in Australia’s tennis media and is now one of the well-known faces of tennis coverage in Australia.

In conversation with the 40-year-old author, questions from Charles wrapped around some confronting topics about tennis, being one of the best players in the world, what it meant to leave the sport and how to rebuild when all seems lost.

Significant contribution to local history

By CORAL COOKSLEY B A LIBRARY with incredible Beechworth Health Service (BHS) history has been dedicated to a local archival researcher.

Dr David Lawrence began working on archives close to three years ago when drawn to the collection while working in the old interview room now known as the Lawrence Library.

“I could see interesting material scattered around and began cataloguing some of it and then found material in the store shed and cupboards,” he said.

“General staff were wonderful helpers.

“Archival research has been part of my academic training and is just part of my life.”

Dr Lawrence said the significant collection has the very first committee meeting where planning started for the Ovens Gold Fields Hospital in 1856.

“From there we are fortunate to have almost all our committee, patients and medical reports,” he said.

“We even have folders of copies of the letters sent from the hospital in

the th 19th century. t “With the amalgamation of the Ovens District Hospital and the Ovens and Murray Hospital for the Aged (Warner Road asylum for the aged) we have material from the two hospitals established by Beechworth citizens.”

Dr Lawrence said the two hospitals had not originally been government ones.

The researcher said he hoped his contribution to the history of Beechworth and district will be acknowledged at large as it has been by BHS. “My work is an expression of my love for this town even though I see myself as a born and bred Queenslander,” he said.

Dr Lawrence had been a director on the BHS Board for nine years until June this year when his term was up.

BHS chief executive officer Mark Ashcroft said Dr Lawrence’s interest in the Health Service history served as the catalyst for locating and searching through historical and archival materials.

“His background as an anthropologist has been critical to the detailed, rigorous and careful approach

he h has h taken t k to t cataloguing t l i the material,” he said.

Dr Ashcroft said his findings and recordings have led to part of the health service’s history to be presented in an organised way for access by history buffs.

“The work David has completed and continues to progress for BHS means incredible chapters in its story remain alive and accessible,” he said.

Over his nine years as a board director Dr Ashcroft said David had championed the role that BHS plays in its community, not only in preparation for the future but also in deference to its long-standing and historical role as a key employer in the region and contributor to local health and wellbeing.

At the BHS AGM when the library dedication took place, board chair Harry Thomas delivered a speech recognising Dr Lawrence’s endeavours related to the historical documents, the material’s significance and legacy it represents for the health service story.

Mr Thomas also recognised Dr Lawrence’s substantive contribution to the board where he had served the longest term possible.

YCDCo celebrates 20 years of local support

By CORAL COOKSLEY YACKANDANDAH Community Development Company (YCDCo) celebrated its 20th anniversary on Saturday, November 25.

A birthday lunch BBQ in Issaac Park for the community was followed by a dinner in the evening held at the Yackandandah Public Hall, which was attended by shareholders, past and present directors and local community group representatives to mark the special occasion.

Chair of YCDCo’s voluntary board Ian Fitzpatrick said seven people had decided to do something when the town’s only service station shut down.

Mr Fitzpatrick said the service station closure came at a time when banks were leaving rural towns, prompting a decision to be made this was not going to happen to the service station.

He said the vision for YCDCo was to become a strong independent voice for the broader Yackandandah community and to benefit the community’s economic, social and cultural wellbeing.

“It was about community ownership, providing a service to the town, investing in the community, and being self-sustaining” he said.

Mr Fitzpatrick said a leap of faith had been taken for the business where the model is now successfully working in several other rural areas.

He said around 100 people attending the dinner heard from founding directors with Mark McKenzie McHarg as key note guest speaker.

Provincial Press purchases Tumut based newspapers VICTORIAN regional publisher Provincial Press Group (PPG) has reached agreement with Luke Watson of Wilkie Watson Publications to purchase his family’s Tumut based mastheads and business in New South Wales.

Following the purchase of The Monaro Post and Jindabyne Summit Sun last year, PPG will acquire Tumut and Adelong Times, Tumbarumba Times and The Gundagai Independent in January 2024, trading as Riverina Media Group.

The agreement also includes mastheads, The Temora Independent and Narrandera Argus and The Lake News, the latter published with support of a Lake Cargelligo community services group.

The Wiklie Watson families have been newspaper publishers and commercial printers in Tumut for four generations, having expanded their operations into the mid Riverina in the last decade.

The purchase also follows PPG’s acquisition of several NSW Central West and Hilltops mastheads from ACM in May this year.

PPG chairman Hartley Higgins said the additional mastheads, located between the company’s Cooma and Cowra based newspapers, comes with strong historic connections to their towns and regional communities.

“They fit with our aim of growth and will be supported by our group publishing and printing technologies,” he said.

PPG’s division North East Media (NEM) publishes the weekly Ovens and Murray Advertiser and other North East Victorian community newspapers.

NEM CEO Edward Higgins said with declining electronic media news services in regional NSW, community newspapers were more sought after for trusted coverage of news and local government organisations.

“Local newspapers should actively reflect the communities they serve and consistently promote their economies and jobs,” he said.

“We are keen to add reader value and engagement to these newspapers along with digital media services going forward.”

BILLSON’S Brewery has won back-toback state awards, after recently winning gold in the Victorian Tourism Awards’ Tourism, Wineries, Distilleries and Breweries category for the second consecutive year.

Six years on from the 1865 brewery’s restoration, the company was commended for its workforce, which is now made up of more than 200 staff, and its reach, with beverages now available nation-wide.

Billson’s beat out Melbourne’s Starward Distillery and Inverloch-based winery Harman Wines to take home the category’s top gong.

According to the Victorian Tourism Industry Council, Billson’s attracts some 66,000 visitors each year.

As a result of their victory, Billson’s Brewery will now represent Victoria at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in 2024.

Friends clinch local art prizes

By CORAL COOKSLEY TWO Yackandandah artists with a close friendship kindled several years ago through their love of art won major prizes in a popular annual art exhibition in the town last month.

Lynne Davies with her artwork ‘Hot Cross Buns’ clinched the Haldane Slatter Memorial Art Award valued at $500 while Sue Lees with her artwork ‘Snow Brumbies’ scored the People’s Choice Award with the tag of $250 in the ‘Fresh and Unframed’ exhibition.

The duo were among 49 artists on display with a total of 135 artworks entered in a variety of mediums with the showcase held in Yackandandah’s Old Courthouse.

Wangaratta artist and judge for the exhibition Helen Hill presented the prizes at the well-attended opening night held in early November.

Lynne said she had been in the arts and crafts world all her life.

The artist took up painting in pastels when she retired six years ago.

“I’d always wanted to do pastel drawings and bought myself a beautiful box of pastels, went to a few art classes and it took off from there,” she said.

“I like portraiture and have done quite a few but I like still life at the moment and have been painting a lot of food.

“Winning the overall prize was a huge surprise and was a real boost to my confidence.”

Lynne had been a cloth doll maker with her own business travelling all over New Zealand, America and Australia where she also taught the craft.

Her artistic interests have included ceramic pottery, calligraphy, weaving, felting, quilt making and patchwork in the pursuit of what she wanted to do.

Sue said she began painting and drawing as soon she could hold a pencil or paintbrush.

“Since I recently retired, I’ve been able to put more time into painting especially with my passion for horses,” she said.

“I started riding horses as soon as I was old enough to sit in a saddle.”

Although no longer riding, Sue’s love of horses remains where she paints snow brumbies as she found people liked them.

The artist said she always has a work in progress in her studio and also specialises in pet portraits commissioned on request as well as teaching a little art.

Beechworth Fire Brigade tanker boost

BEECHWORTH Fire Brigade recently took delivery of a 32-yearold Hino just in time for summer, with the truck specifically outfitted to respond to grass and scrub fires.

Beechworth Fire Brigade officerin-charge Travis Nicholson said on arrival ‘the new to them’ appliance had a rapid strip down, was scrubbed out by brigade members and equipment checked with members then trained in its use. “’The appliance was brought into operational condition within 24 hours of being received and has already been used in responding to fire calls in the local area,” he said.

Despite the fire truck’s age the brigade has equipped the appliance with new firefighting small gear and branch pipes (nozzles) at a cost of around $6000.

Funds raised for new firefighting equipment for the tanker included $1300 raised from the barbeque

held at the Senior Citizen’s Centre on ‘The Voice’ referendum polling day in October.

Mr Travis said donations from the community through fundraising efforts as well as from the servicing and maintenance of fire extinguishers in local businesses and industry had made the outfit possible.

“The addition of new accessories has breathed some new life into an older truck ensuring it stands ready to help protect our community, and is as safe and effective as possible,” he said.

“Our new recruits are really starting to hit their straps now, are much more confidant in the deployment of hoses and branches, able to effectively run the pumps on the trucks, draft water from lakes or tanks, set fire hydrants, and most importantly work safely within the team.

“It really is the team of people that make a great fire brigade, and you can only generate that

through continual training.”

Mr Travis said it has been “awesome” to see the development of new recruits, with the first tranche of this year’s intake scheduled to complete their assessments by the end of January next year.

“This is in time to join our operational responders before the end of the fire season,” he said.

Mr Travis said fuel on the ground with renewed growth of grass and other vegetation as a result of recent rain would not take many warm days to see an increase in fire risk.

“We are in the declared fire danger period, the fire threat remains, and property owners should be preparing their property for the coming hot weather,” he said.

This year I have been studying full-time nursing with an end goal to bridge into paramedicine.

I currently also work casually at Asylum Ghost Tours as a paranormal guide and am a local volunteer ambulance community officer (ACO) for Ambulance Victoria. I’ll be starting a new line of work in the new year as a disability support worker while I complete my studies.

What brought you to your role/ career?

I have always had an interest in health, but I had a little bit of a kickstart when I responded to a call as a GoodSam responder (a free smartphone app that alerts responders to someone nearby in cardiac arrest) linked to Triple Zero (000).

Holiday arrangements for Medicare, Centrelink and Child Support SERVICES Australia is reminding Medicare, Centrelink and Child Support customers that there are some changes to payments and services during the upcoming Christmas and New Year period.

All service centres and most phone lines will be closed on Monday, December 25 through to Wednesday, December 27, and on Monday, January 1.

Services Australia general manager Hank Jongen said the date that some customers report or re-

ceive their payment will change, but that customers can be assured that these payments will still occur.

“If your regular reporting or payment date falls on a public holiday, it will be changed to the day beforehand,” Mr Jongen said.

“It’s important to remember this is not an extra payment, it’s your regular payment made early.

“You may need to budget carefully so this payment lasts until your next payment is due.”

Mr Jongen said self-service options would continue to be available during the holiday period.

“You can check if your reporting or payment date has changed using your Centrelink online account through myGov, or through the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app,” he said.

“The myGov app, Express Plus app, and our phone self service lines will be available 24/7, so customers can still do what they need whenever it suits them.

“Whether you’re reporting income, submitting claims, or applying for an advanced payment, these options are the easiest way to do business with us, both in and out of the holiday season.”

Critical services for Medicare providers, such as PBS authorities and the Australian Organ Donor Register, remain available over this period.

Hume Bank names new chair HUME Bank has announced the appointment of Kerry Grigg as its new chair after Michael Gobel stepped down after three years in the role.

Dr Grigg was first appointed to the Hume Bank Board in July 2017 and has chaired the Remuneration Committee since 2018.

She has a deep connection with and knowledge of the region Hume Bank serves, growing up in Albury and subsequently raising her own family in the region.

Dr Grigg built her career in Albury/Wodonga as an academic at the Charles Sturt University School of Business, before moving into a global corporate career with Mars, Maersk and Novo Nordisk.

Before joining the Hume Bank board, she served on the Wodonga Institute of TAFE board and brings broad business acumen gained through a widespread range of roles and geographies to Hume Bank.

“I’m humbled to be the first female chair of Hume Bank,” Dr Grigg said.

“I look forward to the opportunity of serving in this capacity and leading the bank through the next exciting phase of transformation.

“And importantly – to continue the focus on positively impacting our region.”

Wanderers clip Hawks A HAT-trick of consecutive wins has propelled Beechworth’s A grade to second on the overall WDCA standings.

The Wanderers were unphased going up against the runnersup of the white ball format last season in Rovers United Bruck at WJ Findlay Oval, dominating from the outset in their 62 run win.

Captain Brenton Surrey won the toss and elected to bat as he made the most of the batter friendly conditions himself, top scoring with an aggressive 54 off 46 balls, which was well supported by Cam Fendyk’s 47 not out.

Chasing 200 to win, the Hawks couldn’t muster any real momentum throughout their innings with the well-balanced attack of the Wanderers rolling through RUB for 127 inside 32 overs.

Surrey said it was great to have taken a win against the high calibre opposition of the Rovers, having now beaten both of last season’s one day finalists away from home.

“It was good to play a nice brand of cricket against a good side,” he said.

“We were reasonably lucky to win the toss and bat on a hot and windy day, but you’ve

got to bat well which we were able to do.

“I feel like when it’s warm like that you can almost say the score you get after the opposition field for 40 overs is probably worth another 20 or 30 more at times.”

After missing last week, Cam Fendyk slotted back into the lineup seamlessly, falling just short of a well-earned 50 batting at three and taking 2/14 with the ball.

The Wanderers will be back at home tomorrow to face Ovens Valley full of confidence, having beaten the Tigers by 141 runs three weeks ago in their two-day clash.

Despite being winless in the two-day format, the Tigers sit atop the competition in the one day format at 3-1, ahead of a host of teams on two wins, led by Beechworth.

“They’re coming off a good win and they’re a dangerous side, even though we’ve had a couple of good wins it doesn’t take much to slip back,” Surrey said.

“We’re not doing anything too special, but it’s a nice thing at the moment that we’re not relying on anyone in particular which is a reasonable sign.”
