therglen’s Main Street spans decades and despite the many options that have been put forward over the years, there’s simply no easy answer, without some compromise.

“Council has been working with Regional Roads Victoria, which is responsible for the road, to find a solution that is supported by the

community and key stakeholders.

“The latest proposal, which focusses on safety improvements in Main Street, could be the way forward, however, council wants to ensure that this is well supported by the community before it grants approval.

Cr Roberta Horne voted against the recommendation saying the authorities have a duty of care towards all including truck drivers required to navigate the route where there’s no room for error.

The works would require removing approximately 12 parking spaces and reducing the width of the lanes on Main Street by 300mm to 3.2m and reducing the width off parking bays by 200m to 2.2m.

According to the Australian Trucking Association website the average width of Australian trucks are 2.5 metres wide, excluding safety devices like mirrors.

The website also said a standard traffic lane is 3.5 metres wide, going down to 3.3 metres in some urban areas.

“After a six year wait and the sound rejection of the last RRB plan, the community is justified in feeling they have not been listened to,” Cr Horne said.

“It’s hard to understand why we have been denied safety mechanisms, such as a push button and pedestrian crossing, especially as we have at 70kph signs only a few kilometres further up the Murray Valley Highway.

“One dimensional speed humps, inadequate signage and road markings do nothing to improve safety for pedestrians or vehicles.

“In fact, there are fast food outlets with far better traffic management than us.

“I cannot support this recommendation - it has failed to meet community expectations or its brief to improve safety - there would be a very different outcome if this was a private enterprise.”

Steve Bowmaker, regional director (Hume), Department of Transport said improving safety in Rutherglen has been at the forefront of their work on this project, with several proposals put to Indigo Shire Council based on “extensive consultation and investigations”.

“We are continuing to try and find a solution that works for the community and the council,” he said.

Liberal MP for Benambra, Bill Tilley, slammed the State Government over its handling of the entire project.

“This is just the latest in a bunch of half-baked plans and endless consultation,” Mr Tilley said.

“After six years it’s now been handballed back to Regional Roads Victoria to consult on a plan that reduces the lane width that gives you an extra 50cm from being hit by a truck.

“No doubt there’s been a room full of experts that have produced this but if I put it on the bar at the Poachers Paradise I’m pretty sure they would get their answer - it simply doesn’t pass the pub test.

“I’d love the Transport Minister to stand at the driver’s door of a vehicle parked in Main Street as a B-double rumbles through - perhaps then he would understand our concern.

“This year’s Victorian budget still shows $2.3M to be spent on this project and all to be done by the end of the year; that’s not going to happen.”

Callout for project firefighters for upcoming bushfire season FOREST Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) is looking for people who are seeking a challenging and rewarding job helping to protect Victorian communities during the upcoming bushfire season.

FFMVic Hume deputy chief fire officer, Aaron Kennedy, said applications were now open for 23 project firefighter positions at sites across the region.

“These fixed term positions are a fantastic opportunity for people from all walks of life who are physically fit, to get out in the bush, protect Victoria from bushfires and help to maintain public land across the state,” Mr Kennedy said.

By STEVE KELLY THE exemption period before people have to test and quarantine again after contracting COVID-19 has been cut from 12 to four weeks.

It’s a change that reflects emerging evidence that new Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5 can evade prior immunity gained from infection.

The Victorian Government did, however, ignore health advice calling for mask mandates in schools, early childhood and retail settings.

It has instead strongly recommended Victorians wear masks indoors and in crowded spaces, effective from 11.59pm last night.

It comes as the State Government signalled yesterday that restrictions could be imposed on the health system if case numbers continue to rise.

Hospital admissions across Victoria have risen substantially in the last two weeks from 402 in mid-June to 737 on Tuesday.

In recognition of this next phase of the pandemic and as part of the government’s plan to protect the healthcare system, changes to pandemic orders and public health recommendations came into effect at 11.59pm Tuesday night.

Celebrating the town hall’s historic organ

By MARK STEPHENS LAST week the Beechworth Organ Society celebrated the 170th birthday of the beautiful instrument which stands as a working centrepiece of the town’s history and heritage.

It was built in London in 1852

by Hills Organs and installed in a stately mansion where it was used for entertainment of the ‘upper classes’.

In the years that followed gold brought great wealth to Australia and Beechworth was one of the richest fields in the world producing more than 60 tons of the precious metal.

Beechworth was keen to promote itself as a high class town with beautiful buildings and world class entertainment so by 1886 the organ was installed in the town hall with great acclaim and as a timely distraction from the hor-

rors of the Ned Kelly saga.

However by 1906 it was sold and removed, but with a great deal off effort in 2018 the Beechworth Organ Society found it in Melbourne and brought it home with generous grants Indigo Shire Council, the Copland Foundation and support from the local community.

Since then it has been played on more than 200 occasions and continues to be a centrepiece off town’s cultural heritage.

Farmers market buzzes on a perfect sunny Saturday

By MARK STEPHENS BEECHWORTH Farmers Market this month was busy and buzzing with a beautiful sunny Saturday, cheerful crowds, and plenty of stallholders.

Well-known local Ken Russill and his wife Audrey have sold her excellent paintings, cards and fridge magnets at every Beechworth Farmers Market since it first began more than 12 years ago, and this week Ken is celebrating his 90th birthday.

Best wishes Ken from everyone.

Local author Callum Clegg released his second book, ‘Special Needs Adventures’, following the success of ‘My Christmas Tales’.

He is 32 years of age and has always lived in Beechworth.

His short stories are a joy to read and are available at Beechworth Books.

Darren Sutton has served for many years as a tour guide at the Historic Precinct and at the Old Beechworth Gaol.

He has a wealth of knowledge of our local history and is now developing his ‘SLOW’ business as a miner and jewellery-maker.

Beechworth Lions Club celebrates an active year

BEECHWORTH Lions Club joined the combined changeover dinner recently hosted by Kiewa/Tangambalanga Lions Club at The German, Austrian, and Australian Club in Wodonga.

The clubs involved were Wodonga, Yackandandah, and Kiewa/Tangambalanga and about 80 people were in attendance.

John Eldrid was installed as president for the next 12 months, Christine Luckman as treasurer and Iris Mannik as secretary Not only was John elected for another year as president, he agreed to do another year as the Zone Chairman for Lions District V6 Zone 9.

Lions Clubs in Zone 9 are Albury, Beechworth, Lavington, Thurgoona, Wodonga and Yackandandah.

“Lions Clubs throughout the world have a pivotal role in their community, fundraising to support projects and people in their community such as the renovation of the Gang Plate Layers cottage in Beechworth,” John said.

“Each year we disburse the monies raised throughout the year to needy individuals or community groups.

“It is all about making better communities were we live.”

The highlights featured in the president’s report presented at the dinner included: Gang Plate Layers Cottage: A major project of the club to restore the old cottage to become a community facility provide small spaces for community groups to meet.

The managers of this project, Lions Christine Luckman and Iris Mannik, have secured several grants to en-

able the works to proceed.

When the project is completed the cottage will be opened for community use.

Sausage sizzles: Sausage sizzles are one of the club’s main events where Lions can raise money to help various community groups.

At the recent Golden Horseshoes Festival, they set up outside the Beechworth RSL and were inundated with tourists and locals lining up, at time 10 deep, to get sausage on bread. The club

will continue at their regular venue outside the IGA on the third Saturday of the month.

ANZAC Day: The RSL invited the club to cook the Gunfire Breakfast to feed the hungry residents following the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at which John Eldrid was the MC. The club also laid a wreath in remembrance of the fallen at the ANZAC Day main service.

Movie in the Park: This was an Indigo Shire event in the Police Paddock where the community was

invited to this free event to get people together after the numerous lockdowns because of COVID 19.

Along with other community groups Lions provided the free sausage sizzle for those who came along to enjoy the fun and watch movie.

Inclement weather saw a small crowd but, for those attending, it was fun, and it was just right for a sausage in bread to keep them fed.

Junior Public School Speaking Competition: Montessori School, Saint

Joseph’s, and Beechworth Primary School entered many students in the competition. The initial schools’ round has been conducted with each school providing some very talented speakers.

The next round is club level where the most outstanding students from the participating schools will compete to represent Beechworth at the regional competition with the most outstanding to advance to the District Level Lions Multiple District 201 V6 Convention 2022 at Girgarre.

Harsh lessons of COVID remote learning answered by a teacher

By CORAL COOKSLEY BEECHWORTH’S Jess Marshall - a local primary school teacher - this week answered the second question in the lead-up to this year’s George Briscoe Kerferd Oration titled ‘Australian Education: How did we get here and where are we going?’ to be delivered by educator Peter Hutton on Sunday, July 31.

The question is one of a number posed to four local community members in the lead up to the Oration.

Jess believes anecdotal evidence suggests that some students performed better when learning remotely during COVID lockdowns.

“What are the lessons of COVID remote learning for education?”

“The simple response to this question would be to outline all the ways in which I observed students thrive during remote learning, and to list the lessons for education, as there are surely some, if not many.

“Where families were well-resourced, had the capacity to persist with facilitating learning for their children, and had reliable internet through which to

“Every day, we saw work being sent in by students and families who were as passionate as we are about connection, belonging, and learning; a significant feat given the disrupting, terrifying changes we were experiencing around the world.

“The lessons we can observe here are the power of one-to-one tuition, the impact of the emotional and physical investment of families, the comfort of a familiar environment and regular clothes, the ability to take as many breaks as required (or indeed, put learning aside for a day or two), and the sheer loveliness of being outside in the sunshine or splashing in puddles as part of one’s daily exercise allowances.

“All of these factors are immensely important in feeling safe, connected, and ready to learn, and all of these factors are implemented as best as

they can be in a good classroom where children are seen as the brilliant, whole, wonderful individuals that they are.

“However, it was beyond heartbreaking to observe the widening gap between those who thrive and those who struggle - families and students alike - despite the very best of intentions from all parties involved.

“The inequity that we see on a daily basis in the classroom was magnified, and has led to significant disadvantage in outcomes for learning.

“Some of our students who find learning difficult - for a multiplicity of reasons found it nigh on impossible to remain engaged in learning, and indeed, connected to the school community.

“We all felt the fractures, the loss, the grief, over being apart for weeks and months on end, over and over again.

“Devastation over these first years, the middle years, and the last years of primary schooling being interrupted so significantly.

“There were many days that saw the eruption of tears in the staffroom when lockdown announcements were made, and many days of tentative, hopeful joy upon reunion.

“There are dozens of lessons for education from this period in our history, lessons that will hopefully change the way we look at learning for all students to be more flexible, more thoughtful, more understanding, and allowing more agency.

“Moving to a hybrid system where online learning is an option would certainly be an interesting move, and it would surely enable some students to thrive holistically.

“The biggest lesson for me, as a primary school teacher in regional Victoria?

“The importance of connection; human connection.

“Being in the same space as peers, teachers, school community members.

“Weeding the school garden with volunteers, cooking meals to share on Fridays alongside friends.

The Our Prosperity Realised site is the next iteration of an exciting campaign being led by the Into Our Hands Community Foundation as part of their We Give North East project, an initiative designed to grow giving across our region and for the towns and communities we all love.

People interested to give back to their local community can now get online and explore the various ways they can leave a planned gift or legacy for the community.

The site also profiles the giving potential and grant making possibilities for Mansfield, Alpine, Wangaratta and Indigo shires if the community begins to activate their assets and direct some local community wealth back to charitable gifts in the form of donations or bequests to local causes and needs through the local foundation.

The site is built and based on the technical report, Our Prosperity Realised.

First launched in December 2019, the report is an evidence–based approach for North East Victoria to understand the magnitude of each region‘s intergenerational household wealth transfer and profits from local industry.

The study explores what this data could mean for community asset and endowment building in the short and long–term and ultimately, how this could translate into growing strong, vibrant, resilient and sustainable communities across Australia.

Into Our Hands Community Foundation has led the way in Australia on these approaches, which are now being adopted across the philanthropic sector as an effective model and approach to grow giving in place and particularly in regional and rural areas.

The model has also been used by

Since commencing the We Give North East Project, Into Our Hands Community Foundation has sought to run training and workshops to start new conversations among locals about giving back.

“We‘ve run training for professional advisors, community forums and briefings for towns about growing community funding and sessions with non–profits about how to grow giving to their organisation; it‘s all part of an effort to create a positive culture of giving in our region,” Into Our Hands executive officer, Sarah Thompson said.

The work has largely been supported by Ecstra Foundation as well as local funder, June Canavan Foundation and the Foundation for Re-

gional and Rural Renewal who are keen to support Into Our Hands to trial this new approach.

Early signs show their efforts are working.

Their most recent annual report tabled at the Into Our Hands annual general meeting on November 24 last year, indicated a steady rise in corpus funds and three new sub–funds for North East Victoria, including new individuals and business donors thinking more seriously about their legacy to the community and acting on that by making large gifts to the towns and communities they live in.

Highlights of the new website include the revelation that if one per cent of the wealth transferred from this region was bequeathed to community foundations, the community foundation endowment would build to $25,000,000 in just 10 years.

This would translate to $1,000,000

per annum available to be granted back to community projects.

Put another way, if 10 per cent of households in Wangaratta, Indigo, Alpine and Mansfield municipalities left five per cent of their household wealth to the Into Our Hands Foundation, the Foundation could achieve a corpus of $1,500,000 within two years, $5,000,000 within five years and $10,000,000 within eight years.

This kind of generosity would allow the foundation to grow their grant budgets for community to more than $139,000 within three years, $463,000 within five years and $2,200,000 within 10 years.

Over the next 50 years, the report predicted that 40 per cent of all household wealth transferred in the region will be from Wangaratta.

While the average household wealth transfer is highest in Indigo Shire at $745,000 in the next

five years.

“Consider what you could do for your community – just five per cent from one in 10 households is going to support major community investments and needs in just 10 years and allow for continued funding for our community in perpetuity.

“Imagine if we could focus on what we want and need for our communities and not have to worry about the funding?

“This model is trying to achieve that for North East Victoria, it‘s a big concept but it will deliver amazing results if our community support it and give back locally, to their local foundation.”

The Into Our Hands Community Foundation has six community based funds, all of which are raising funds for community grants to be possible long term.

These are: GIVE Wangaratta, The Alex Race Stelling Fund, Garry Nash & Co Community Fund, GROW Myrtleford+, North East Bushfire Support Relief and Recovery Appeal and Into Our Hands Community Foundation Public Fund.

Donors can also leave bequests for their community or a particular cause to establish a perpetual fund.

Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible and can be made through pledges from estates, businesses , workplace giving or as an individual donation via the secure online platform at www.intoourhandsfoundation.com.au.

He is a relative newbie to Beechworth, having moved to the town 18 months ago with his partner and their adopted greyhound.

What’s your job?

Infrastructure and projects manager at Brown Brothers Winery in Milawa.

What brought you to this role?

I saw it advertised and thought it would be a good opportunity to work in the wine industry.

I thought if I liked working with wine half as much as I like drinking it, then it would be a great job to have.

What do you love about your job?

Working for a family company that has managed to stay grounded in its values and history.

The engineer in me also likes the broad variety of technologies at the winery, from some of the oldest in the country through to a new, highly automated packaging facility.

The staff wine discount is pretty nifty too.

What do you do in the community?

Sample perhaps too much local food, wine, beer, and spirits.

I also volunteer at Kangaloola Wildlife Shelter, tending to rescued wildlife and cleaning and maintaining the facilities and grounds.

They’re always in need of volunteers so look them up if you can spare some time.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

Indigenous recognition and reconciliation.

I’m saddened and ashamed of the death, dispossession, and discrimination that has been inflicted on our First Nations people by my colonial heritage.

This is especially relevant in our community, where our Aboriginal population and culture were so decimated that it is no longer clear or agreed whose land we’re on in the Beechworth region.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

Listen, learn, and facilitate discussion and

Having just touched on two very serious issues, I probably need to lighten things up a little so I’d say Jerry Seinfeld, since Seinfeld is my all time favourite TV show that I never get tired of watching re-runs of.

I’d like to do the whole Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee thing with him, borrowing a car of his choice from the Old Cranks Club and going for a coffee and a toastie at Tiny in Beechworth.

Why would you show him that?

To treat him to great coffee, which he wouldn’t be able to get in the US. What book are you reading?

I’ve just finished reading Lies, Damned Lies by Claire G Coleman, which provides a personal and confronting account of the impacts of colonisation on First Nations people and the myths and omissions in our learned history of post-colonisation Australia.

AFTER a league wide bye, the Beechworth Bushrangers will be gearing up for what’s expected to be a frosty trip to Mitta this weekend.

The Bushrangers senior side enters the game on a three game winning streak as they jumped into the top three with their win against Rutherglen a fortnight ago.

President Adam Fendyk said the success shown from the

senior football side this year is a reflection of the hard work and determination shown by committed volunteers off the field over a long period of time.

“Around a footy club you need a lot of people around that are happy to give,” he said.

“We’re very lucky to have a very good crew that want to be around the place.

“You’ve got a club and then you have success is the way I like to see it.”

Fendyk said the bye was a

well earned weekend off for the club as they now prepare for the final third of the season.

“We will hopefully be playing deep into the finals and from a high finishing spot we hope as well,” he said.

“The success of juniors, footballers, netballers.. it’s all coming together at once.”

Despite being second last on the ladder, Mitta have proven to be competitive in most of their games this season.

Fendyk said the cold forecast

for the weekend won’t bother the team and cold winter days like Saturday is why he can’t praise his volunteers enough.

“Can’t thank people enough for the work they do and what it means for the club, without the volunteers there is no games, there’s no team and then the town doesn’t get to enjoy footy,” he said.

“We look forward to going down to Mitta this weekend for a really cold game by the looks.”

Golf titles close to settlement THERE werre fantastic conditions last Sunday for the 3rd round of the Beechworth’s Golf Club’s Men’s Club Championships.

Dylan Pool won the daily event with a scratch score of one over 69 off a two handicap, for a nett score of 67.

The ever consistent Vaughan Saunders was runner up with 70/1/69.

Obviously it was a day for the single figure handicappers with Josh Carr running in third with 76/5/71.

Nearest to pins went to Carr on the 3rd and 7th and Stuart McIntosh on the 17th.

In the Club Championships two grades are just about over, but it is slightly in the balance in the C Grade.

After three rounds taking the best two scores Sanders leads A Grade with 135 (69,66) and a good back up round of 70.

Pool is seven shots back on 142 (73,69) but with a 75 as the third score, a miracle is required next Sunday to make it three Club Championships in a row for Dylan.

Carr sits in third with 152 (76,76).

In the B Grade it seems that it is all over except for the engraving on the trophy, with Jacob Howard 172 (86,86) sitting 26 shots in front of Peter Smith 198 (100,98).

In the closest grade, C Grade, Dave Lang 179 (89,90) holds an eight shot lead from Jamie Dolny 187 (95,92).

But Dolny holds a superior back up round of 95 compared to Lang’s back up of 98.

Stuart McIntosh sits in third on 189 (89,100), but doesn’t have the luxury of a back up round after missing last week’s game.

In the 54 hole handicap event Saunders (131) leads by an even bigger margin of nine shots from Pool (140).

Carr (142), Lang (143) and McIntosh (143) are the only other golfers worthy of a mention.

There were also another two first round matches played in the Handicap Matchplay Championships.

Saunders accounted for Dean Howard five and four whereas Dolny and McIntosh didn’t think 18 holes was enough, with McIntosh eventually getting the better of Dolny on the 21st hole.

McIntosh now plays Jacob Howard and Saunders takes on Lang in the semi-finals to decide who plays off for the title.

The final round of the Championships will be played this Sunday, for a 12pm hit off.

Last Wednesday the ladies played a Stableford event.

The scores were very tight at the top with only four points separating all but two of the players.

Debbie Tully was the winner with 36 points, there was a three way countback with Jan Lang winning the countback from Gail Smith and Nada Guyatt all with 34 points.

Glenda Marshall claimed two of the nearest the pins on the 10th and the 17th.
