Volunteers celebrate walking school bus 10 year anniversary

By CORAL COOKSLEY A CELEBRATION held at Beechworth’s Miss Amelie Gourmet on Wednesday marked a 10 year anniversary of the town’s walking school bus.

Powered by legs and not an engine, the ‘bus’ is a volunteer group walking primary school children to school with one volunteer placed at the front and one at the rear.

Former Beechworth Health Service (BHS) promotions officer Anna Mackinlay attended the morning tea, and said Victorian Government health funding had been received at the time to get children more active by walking to school.

“BHS started the program with walking buses in Beechworth, Chiltern and Rutherglen,” she said.

“Funding dwindled out but the walking school bus in Beechworth remained strong and kept going.”

Ms Mackinlay said it’s great for kids to walk to school from a young age as it gives them the confidence to walk by themselves as they get older.

“We have young children with volunteers who have often retired and it’s great to see an intergenerational mix

“Volunteers make a valuable contribution to the community as many parents work and the kids can walk to school.”

Joining the bus four years ago, volunteer Jackie Williams said the kids wanted to be part of the bus, are full of fun and told their stories from the weekend.

A former childcare worker and with grandchildren not living locally, Jackie said she

loved being with the children.

Five volunteers at the morning tea - Helen McIntyre, Hans Van Aken, Jim Kenny, Linley Sewell and Jennifer Perrin started when the bus kicked off.

Helen said it had been fun and great to watch the kids grow up and develop.

From the first day, Hans said he enjoyed it as well as the kids, with good exercise for all.

“I remember one day, a child grabbed my hand, and

that kind of thing is very special,” he said.

Jennifer said she had made wonderful friendships with the volunteers.

“The children are great fun and revitalize us with their amazing stories, and it’s delightful exercise for everyone.

Jim said he also loved being with the kids.

“They learn how to mix with older people in the community too and it’s a

great connection,” he said.

With the bus started up again in the middle of this year after a COVID hiatus, BHS promotion officer Gabriella Tange said Beechworth Primary School, St Joseph’s and Montessori are back on board.

“Research tells us that when kids walk to school, they arrive more alert and ready to start a school day, and that’s a healthy way to start,” she said.

He said the upcoming works would closely align with the shire’s Disability Action Plan, adopted earlier this year to reduce barriers to goods, services and facilities for those with a disability.

Victorian Disability Advisory Council chair Chris Varney said works to improve inclusiveness for individuals with a disability could have a life-changing impact in the community.

“We must do everything possible so that people with disability are fully included in all aspects of our community,” he said.

“These grants will help improve access so that more people can get the best out of their day-to-day lives.”

Carriage home signed off

By RYAN MALCOLM BEECHWORTH’S Historic Carriage Collection is set to be on the move, although a long-term home for the carriages could be as many as four years away.

The Indigo Shire Council (ISC) and The National Trust at the weekend signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to move the 23-strong collection from its home at Billson’s Brewery to an undisclosed temporary home at a private property on the outskirts of Beechworth.

The move, which was sup-

ported by the Old Cranks Motor Club, marks the commencement of a three-stage plan by The National Trust, with the first step to involve housing the carriages for 1824 months to facilitate their repair and research, which could be done in collaboration with community and education groups.

Stage two would include a small-scale activation of the carriages, which would see the artefacts showcased as part of short-term displays and local festivals as part of a one to two year plan, before further exploring a long-term

home for the historic display.

Indigo Shire Council chief executive officer Trevor Ierino said the move was a positive step towards ensuring the safety of the carriages.

“We are confident that the MoU and the temporary relocation of the carriages to allow for cataloguing and conservation are important steps to ensuring that the collection is preserved and that its link to Beechworth’s rich heritage is retained for future generations to enjoy,” he said.

Both parties also outlined reasons for denying the Beechworth Railway Goods

Shed as a suitable location, a prospect which has been the subject of community debate since an expression of interest was first lodged in 2020.

A lack of room for restoration works, the shed’s split level design, a lack of capacity for a workshop and no amenities were all cited as reasons the goods shed was overlooked as a long-term home, however, Beechworth History and Heritage Society president Elizabeth Mason said the location posed an enticing location for further expansion.

She said a local engineer had confirmed all 23 carriag-

es would be able to fit in the shed during the initial stages of the proposal.

“As this is only stage one of a proposal to develop the entire site into a vibrant heritage transport attraction, the carriages would be moved once, stored safely and securely until funding was achieved to build a second work shop shed on the original footprint opposite the goods shed,” she said.

“This would enable the Goods Shed to be the display centre and work shop where lost trades/skills could be showcased along with the

creation of jobs, carriage rides and endless possibilities for heritage related attractions.

“Regional Development Victoria has also reached out to us and expressed support for this project.

“After four years of engagement with ISC and National Trust, it is extremely disappointing to see these two organisations turn their backs on a proposal which exemplifies every aspect of who we are - heritage tourism.”

The carriages will be relocated to the new premises in the coming weeks.

Local residents become Australian citizens

By CORAL COOKSLEY YACKANDANDAH’S Stefan Heintjes joined four other local residents from the shire at a ceremony in Beechworth last Friday to become Australian citizens.

Indigo’s Ivan Clarke, Sian Heaton, Donna Pelka and Richard Boucher all from the UK with Stefan hailing from the Netherlands undertook their pledges to Australia at the special event held at the Indigo Shire Council Chambers.

Stefan shifted to Australia in 2015 after meeting his wife Jessee when he worked and lived in Berlin and Jessee had been travelling around Europe at the time.

The couple now has an 18-monthold daughter Charlie.

The elated new citizen said he finally felt fully accepted by Australia well as by the small and close-knit community in which he lives.

“It’s recognition that I live, work and belong here,” he said.

“I used to run a small business in Yack, where many new connections were made and has grown my local network and now I’m practicing as a physiotherapist in Beechworth,” he said.

“It is a nice feeling being able to stay indefinitely and also being part of the community, where I can vote, and be part of other things that one cannot be part of as a ‘temporary migrant.”

The journey for Stefan to become an Australian citizen since moving to the nation had been challenging with the first few years on a variety of different visas before he applied for permanent residency.

“It was a long, slow and expensive pathway with a lot of red tape and as a young, white European male with a good education and access to money and documentation it was pretty frustrating at times,” he said.

With family and friends in the Netherlands a trip is planned to visit every year.

“COVID-19 made that hard but luckily we were able to go back in August and catch up with everyone,” he said.

by Beechworth-based Australian Centre for Rural Entrepreneurship (ACRE).

Young entrepreneur Lilianna was among a number of her peers as well as other students from four schools in the region showcasing and selling their creative products to the community at a schools’ market last Wednesday held at the Old Beechworth Gaol.

ACRE founder and CEO, Matt Pfahlert, said there were now 15,500 students across Australia undertaking the approved curriculum which started in the North East.

“It’s becoming really significant,” he said.

Mr Pfahlert said a decade ago many people didn’t understand that entrepreneurship would be useful for young people to see themselves as job creators for their future as well as the same skills gained making them more employable.

Gathering held in the southern hemisphere hosted by ACRE, the market drew a bumper crowd this year.

While learning a range of business skills to help them be their own job creators in the future or to gain employment, funds raised from sales helped causes students

cared about through running their own enterprise.

Among different charities chosen by the students were the RSPCA, Betty’s Place Women’s Refuge, Ocean Cleanup, Kangaloola Wildlife Shelter and World Vision.

“Our teams have made bracelets, phone cases,

soaps, jewellery bowls, some nice rock paintings that students decorated and mugs ,” the young student said.

“We learn how to work with other people as a team and we’re raising money for our chosen charities.”

Held every year since the program began in 2016 ex-

cept for a covid-enforced gap, St Joseph’s Primary School teacher Mark Butters said the market seemed to be getting bigger every year.

“There seems to be double the number of people from the last time the market was held in November last year,” he said.

“Students coming up with their own ideas and business plans such as costs and packaging to determine how much money they have to make, gives them all those life skills through their businesses,” he said.

Visitor to the market, Albury’s Lisa Elliot, said life skills gained in the school’s social enterprise program gave purpose and direction for what students might want to do later in life or to see what can be achieved.

ACRE Board member Kerrie O’Brien said the program taught young people an incredible array of skills that can be translated into everyday life.

“It helps them develop awareness about their communities and ways that they can give back into the community,” she said.

“There’s great creativity and joy, and students are very proud of their work, where profits go to really good causes.

“It’s empowering and they can see the difference they can make in the world.

“It involves maths, marketing, and creative thinking in how to build a business model that differentiates social enterprises from any other business.”

Beechworth Pantry shuts doors after 19-year stay

By CORAL COOKSLEY A NEW chapter is set to open for The Beechworth Pantry owners Ian and Robyn Fetherstonhaugh, after they shut the doors last Friday having run the business for 19 years.

With a love of hospitality the couple has worked in the industry for more than four decades.

Robyn and Ian both studied in the field that led them to a catering background in food services at Melbourne hospitals as well as hotels and restaurants before a move to Beechworth.

Beechworth beckoned with a work opportunity where Ian took up the role of Beechworth Bakery manager for five years.

Taking a ‘year off ’ after leaving the bakery, Ian worked in a fill-in job at IGA while Robyn pursued her dream to start The Beechworth Pantry business, negotiating with suppliers and equipment providers for the fit out of what had been vacant premises.

Known for her cakes, quiches and range of savoury dishes such as lasagna as well as local produce on the shelves including jams and chutneys, Robyn also catered for private and specialty functions.

“I really enjoyed getting in here first thing in the morning and being creative with the cakes,” she said.

NEW CHAPTER: Husband and wife business team Robyn and Ian Robyn Fetherstonhaugh are opening the doors to a different lifestyle.

Robyn’s Christmas cakes and puddings have been hot favourites by customers too with many made and sold in the lead up to leaving the business.

“We had a great clientele and have had many older Beechworth friends who enjoyed coming in here to have a nice meal and we enjoyed being their hosts,” she said.

“We’re proud of what we created with the number of customers that we’ve had over our time here.

“It’s been a great journey and

there have been great team members to help me.”

Ian said their two boys Mathew, 26, and James, 23, grew up in the business too.

With a seven day a week business, he said the couple shared time with the boys on different days throughout the week to cover home life and various activities including Saturday sport.

The couple said they’re looking forward to having a restful break before Christmas where travel is on the horizon next year to their loved destination of Mooloolaba

on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast as well as trips around Australia and perhaps overseas.

But the pair has plans to take up volunteer, casual or part-time work as well next year.

“We love Beechworth and will be staying in the town,” Ian said.

“We’ve been overwhelmed with good wishes and people’s response to us leaving where we’ve received beautiful bunches of flowers too.

“The business has been challenging, hard work but rewarding and profitable.”

Queen’s College Choir comes to Beechworth

By CORAL COOKSLEY MELBOURNE University Queen‘s College Choir is set to enthrall concert goers at an upcoming Beechworth Christ Church event ‘An Die Musik‘ with well–known German works of the nineteenth century.

Director and Beechworth local John Weretka said the choir looked forward to performing the works that have become mainstays of choral repertoire on October 23.

“These include the beautiful ‘Geistliches Lied‘ (Spiritual Song) by Brahms – a real favourite of mine – and Mendelssohn‘s ‘Verleih uns Frieden‘ (Grant us Peace), a work the composer wrote very early in his career,” he said.

“We will be singing an entire cantata

by Johann Sebastian Bach ‘O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht‘, which he wrote as a motet for a funeral but is a radiant expression of hope.”

Among lesser known works will be a set of folksong settings Brahms made as director of his own choir.

In listening to some great music, Mr Weretka said he hopes the audience will leave with an appreciation for the way composers better known in other fields – largely orchestral music – devoted the same intelligence and energy they brought to their symphonies and concertos to the relatively humble medium of choral music.

THE RUTHERGLEN Agricultural Show this Sunday is shaping up to be a fabulous time for the local community as well as visitors from near and far.

Back for the first time following a two year hiatus due to COVID-19 impacts, the 132-year-old show with free entry has among its activities a tent pegging display and competition, an animal nursery, petting zoo and ferret racing.

Others include a side show alley and amusements, pavillion displays and men’s cake competition, live music with local musicians, a model railway running as well as paint facing for the kids.

Rutherglen High School students will demonstrate their cattle handling skills, machinery and small engines as well as steam engines will be puffing away

and heritage and classic motor vehicles will also be on show.

Crowds can also see sheep shearing in action and more, while trade and market stalls include artisan woodwork and jewellery, handcrafted ciders, homemade produce such as jams and chutneys as well as others.

An inaugural Rutherglen Vintage Motorbike Show in association with the town’s Caffeine N Machine Cafe will also be held.

A barbeque lunch and afternoon tea with refreshments will also tempt the tastebuds.

Rutherglen Agricultural Society president Greg Lumby said the show had provided somewhere for everyone within the community to gather, catch up, and enjoy a fun, relaxing day, as well as showcase the best of what is offered locally.

“Many family members

return annually just for the show,” he said.

“Our show has generally had quite a variety of exhibits and stuck true to a rural one.”

With a dwindling number of volunteers, Mr Lumby said the Hordern Pavilion will be full of displays rather than competition items as well as there are no horse events except for the tent pegging competition.

“More stall holders than ever will be on the showground and along with favourites from past years will ensure that there will be plenty to see and do,” he said.

Mr Lumby said O’Connors Case IH is the Ag Show’s major sponsor this year along with funding from an Agriculture Victoria grant.

Sunday’s show (October 16) is being held at the Rutherglen Showgrounds, 171 High Street, from 9am to 4pm.

A love of promoting the region SYDNEY-born Jennie Gilliver lived on the outskirts of the city in Camden before making a tree change 16 years ago to Victoria’s North East. With her husband, the couple ran holiday accommodation in Alpine Shire’s picturesque village of Bright for ten years, then ‘retired’ to Beechworth.

What’s your job?

I work at Visitor Information Centres in Beechworth and Yackandandah over weekends, and have been doing this for about three and a half years.

What brought you to this role?

I wanted to be part of our town, and thought that this role would be a great opportunity for me to achieve that ambition. I applied for the position and got the job.

What do you love about the role?

My workmates are amazing and we are a great team. I very much enjoy the interaction with our tourists, love promoting our region and I am proud that we get terrific feedback.

What do you do in the community?

I enjoy horse riding in the forest with my wonderful friend Sabine who owns TukTuk Clothing in Beechworth. As she manufactures an equestrian label for women, I give her a hand with marketing. I am a volunteer and active member of the Golden Horseshoes Festival (GHSF) committee - Beechworth’s fabulous annual community festival held over the Easter long weekend with Saturday the main event. We had around 13,000 people attend the festival earlier this year. It was a terrific community time as well as drawing visitors from near and afar.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

I think housing would be the top of the list. We have a home, but there are so many people that are desperate to acquire accommodation.

Jennie Gilliver, Beechworth What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

I would like to see crown land released at minimum cost where first homebuyers could build a house. Then those houses could only be on-sold taking into account only Consumer Price Index increases. I am convinced that this would help stop house prices soaring and give first homebuyers a chance to have their own home.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

The situation in Ukraine is so sad, and scary.

The murder of so many innocent people is beyond comprehension, both in Russia and Ukraine. Along with climate change and people in denial. Lucky Beechworth is not beachfront.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

Princess Diana. I think she was so ‘ordinary,’ compassionate and just plain lovely. And I am not a monarchist in any way. I would love to take her to Ingram’s Rock with a couple of girlfriends, a bottle of delicious local wine and a hamper of local produce, and just have a picnic and a girly gossip. I think we would need a lift home.

Why would you take her there?

It’s such a beautiful piece of nature that so many people do not have the privilege of seeing, and it is in our backyard.

What book are you reading?

‘Vanished’ by Danielle Steel.

Twilight golf tees off

By DYLAN POOL LAST Thursday we had the first week of twilight golf.

With players turning up left, right and centre, we thought we would have a great field for the first week.

But only seven players ventured out for nine composite holes, and about the same amount stayed in the clubhouse and kept the bar afloat.

We played the 10th and 17th holes twice, also with a mixture of a few front and back nine holes, due to the wet nature of the course.

As it was a bit of a mixture of holes we played stroke instead of the normal stableford.

Graeme Cordy recorded the best score of the night and collected the cash with a score of 37/6.5/30.5.

Andy Croome was runner up with 42/9/33.

Croomey also claimed nearest the pin on the 10th, which has been donated by the Beechworth Bakery, while Jamie Dolny took the cash on the 9th for the nearest chip.

As there was only a small field there was no BBQ conducted, but we held a raffle and made the non-players buy tickets.

This proved a good idea as John Sheehan as a non-player claimed the raffle and Rod Shaw won the two balls for second prize after trudging

The women have set a new date for the event to be played on Wednesday, November 16 if the conditions suit and the men will most likely try and hold an ambrose event later in the year with a date to be set.

Wanderers washed out Beechworth cricketers rejuvenated despite interrupted pre-season p p

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN THE Beechworth Wanderers‘ A grade cricketers will be focused on developing their youth as they look to rejuvenate under new coach Kate Burns.

Preparations for the new season have been stop–start due to the high rainfall that has hit the region and has forced a cancellation to all scheduled WDCA games this weekend, including the Wanderers‘ much anticipated match against the Benalla Bushrangers.

Instead Beechworth will have to wait another week to get their season started against last season‘s minor premiers the Wangaratta Magpies.

Beechworth appointed former state cricketer Burns as coach during the winter, who grew up in the North East and most recently played in Victoria‘s Premier League with Ringwood.

Captain Brenton Surrey said although the weather has limited what she‘s been able to do with the group, her experience had been a welcome inclusion.

“Kate‘s been fantastic, she‘s got great experience and she‘s been really positive and really good around training,” he said.

“Her tutoring skills and communication are really good and hopefully we can get

a good run at it from here on.”

Last season the Wanderers finished seventh in what was a tough season on the field with a few bright spots such as wins over the Magpies and Kayde Surrey‘s dominant season with bat and ball.

Beechworth will be without regular A grade paceman Matt Ryan, who will play for the Wodonga Raiders in Cricket Albury Wodonga‘s Provincial competition.

Surrey said he is hoping to get numbers back on the track over the next few weeks to build momentum through the early stages of the season.

“Initially we‘ve been a bit light on for numbers, I don‘t know if the weather might have something to do with that, footy went a little bit deeper into the year than previous years so trying to get the guys out is a bit hit or miss,” he said.

“All we‘ve been doing is some very basic bowling, it hasn‘t been flat out but we‘ve been able to loosen the backs and harden the hands up a bit before we get going.

“In terms of goals we‘ll try and develop and nurture our juniors and the younger cricketers as much as possible and hopefully they are still around the club, still around the area in a couple of years and can carry the club forward.”
