Lake Sambell to host triathlon Major Albury/Wodonga event switched to Beechworth due to blue-green algae outbreak

By SHANE DOUTHIE A BLUE-GREEN algae outbreak at the Allans Flat Water Hole has forced the Albury Wodonga Triathlon Club (AWTC) to switch the event to Lake Sambell this weekend.

Organisers expect a near record number of entries for the event as it will be the last club triathlon as well as the final Victorian Regional Series Race for season 2024/25.

While the event will bring an unexpected economic

boost to Beechworth it will also mean a number of sudden street closures including parts of High Street, Havelock Road and Alma Road Beechworth which are now subject to approved local road closures and traffic management plans.

Local residents have already been advised by mail with full details inside today’s O&M Advertiser and on Indigo Shire Council’s website.

The event starts at 3pm

Saturday and will run for a maximum of five hours.

“The committee has been looking for alternative locations to host their events due to the Allans Flat Water Hole having ongoing blue-green algae outbreaks throughout the year depending on the rainfall,” AWTC president Jeremy Kent said.

“We were looking for a water hole that has fresh running water into it and that could open up our events to juniors from the age of seven

rather than from the age of 12.

“AusTriathlon, which is our governing body, has restrictions as to the distance different ages can compete, so we were looking for a lake that was able to offer this easily and lucky for us Lake Sambell in Beechworth is the location.

“This is the first time in the club’s history to be closing the road which we are very excited about.”

Categories for the event

include kids from the age of seven as of 31 December 2025 completing a 50m swim, 2km bike ride and 500m run, the enticer offers a 300m swim, 10km bike ride and 3km run and the sprint offers a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 6m run.

There is also a team event for the sprint and juniors aged 12 to 17 and a junior sprint for those aged 16 and 17.

The swim is in Lake Sambell, the bike is a 5km loop heading from Peach Drive,

up High Street to Alma Road and back followed by the run which will be along McConville Avenue and around the rail trail as another lap circuit.

“The sport of triathlons is growing, many people have the stigma that you’ve got to be an elite athlete to compete, however, that is not the case,” he said.

“We are wanting to encourage young kids and juniors to try the sport and see if they enjoy it.

Traffic controllers will be stationed along High St at these nominated intersections to assist motorists through the event space.

This year’s Golden Horseshoes Festival ramps up

By CORAL COOKSLEY A GRANT of $12,750 from the Victoria Government through its multicultural festivals and events program has been a welcome boost for extra activities at this year’s Golden Horseshoes Festival (GHSF).

The biggest event on the Beechworth calendar is set to draw thousands into the town between 18 to 21 April for a four-day weekend full of history, entertainment, bustling markets and community spirit.

“They will be taking part with a display,” she said.

A Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) spokesperson said 17 FFMVic firefighters and multiple local CFA brigades responded to the blaze on Six Mile Road at 3.15pm.

A first attack dozer was

called to the scene as crews were able to contain the grass and scrub fire to 2000m2 in size at 4.30pm.

The cause of the fire is being investigated in conjunction with Victoria Police.

The FFMVic spokesperson said Beechworth FFMVic crews returned to the fireground on Friday to black-out hot-spots and patrolled the fire will until it was safe.

With a marketing campaign in place, Ms Kirton said posters are being distributed too.

Taste of Art Prize a fabulous success

By CORAL COOKSLEY THRILLED organisers of last Friday night’s gala exhibition opening for the Rutherglen Taste of Art Prize rated the event a fabulous success with around 350 people drawn to the special occasion.

One of the organisers, Irena Webster said the night had been one of the best community events experienced.

“There was a real buzz in the room,” she said.

The annual art exhibition in its eighth year received close to 500 entries from 275 artists as well as 64 youth around the region and other states.

Local artists Susie Goodyear from near Rutherglen and Beechworth’s Matt Kinsey among 13 section winners said the exhibition provided a great opportunity to showcase their work.

Susie clinched the first place prize of $2000 sponsored by Corowa Furnishings and Flooring - one of three major prizes in the painting/ mixed media section.

“It is my first major art prize, and the win was made all the more special as it came about in my local community,” she said.

“There was definitely a “yipee!” moment but I also felt extremely fortunate my work was selected from so many wonderful entries.

Susie said she uses acrylic paint and enjoys building up layers by glazing.

“I’ve been painting for 10

“In each painting I seek to capture the emotion and expression of the animal at that particular moment - to create soulful works.”

The artist’s winning entry ‘With All That I Am’ was inspired by a dog ‘s dedication to stock work.

Susie said the working canine named Rosebank Pearl loves giving every part of herself to the job.

As an artist Susie said she is extremely lucky to have such a major, well run art prize right on her doorstep.

“It is the one art show I make sure I’m organised for,” she said.

“The timing of the event to coincide with Tastes of Rutherglen provides artists with the opportunity to show their work not only to local people but also to those in town for the Tastes events.”

Matt scored an equal first prize of $2000 in the painting/ mixed media category with his oil on canvas painting ‘Morning at the Goods Yard, Wangaratta.’

“I was very surprised and humbled to win this as there were so many amazing artworks on display across a wide variety of styles,” he said.

He said the genesis of the painting arose from a discussion with a friend while waiting for a train back in 2019.

“We were talking about the derelict nature of the Wangaratta rail yard, and he mentioned a couple of European photographers, Bernd and Hilla Becher, who specialised in taking shots of industrial sites,” he said.

“Apart from looking them up online I thought nothing further of it until last year when I had to catch a train from Wang and was surprised by the obliteration of a lot of the rail yard infrastructure in association with the inland rail project.

“It prompted me to paint the brick water tower and adjacent crane.

“I set the painting in the late 70s so some railway goods rolling stock could also be part of the scene.”

Matt said the Rutherglen Taste of Art Prize is a great way to explore other local artists’ work.

Five months ago with her partner Oli, the couple moved to Beechworth.

“We did a year of travelling the world beforehand and realised we were craving a tree change, with a good community and Beechworth has provided,” she said.

What do you do workwise?

I work as an occupational therapist focussing on mental health. I work with wonderful people across the lifespan, to create a space to support them to build their independence and improve wellbeing.

What brought you to your role/career?

I always wanted to work in healthcare knowing my purpose is to provide safety and support in this crazy world.

I’m passionate about disability advocacy, as well as mental health. For me, being an occupational therapist is the perfect blend.

What do you love about your work?

The limited housing availability of rentals. We were

very lucky to find a place when we moved, but it’s pretty grim out there. I think if there were more rentals available then Beechworth and surrounds could get an influx of young people which is important for communities to thrive.

What would you do to solve change or improve that situation?

Educating and supporting the community on the importance of young people living in rural areas. We love it here and would encourage more to move if it were easier. I hope property owners might consider renting out their beautiful homes and granny flats, rather than as Airbnbs where they often sit empty.

What do you see as one of the most important current world issues?

Local tradition sets the scene for celebrating International Women’s Day

Beechworth CWA members marked International Women’s Day with a dinner in the gardens

BY CORAL COOKSLEY A TRADITIONAL CWA get together to mark International Women’s Day took place in the Beechworth Town Hall Gardens on Saturday.

A group of members joined in the annual day held on 8 March around the world to celebrate social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women with this year’s theme “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”

For more than a decade Beechworth CWA members have gathered in the gardens with an open invitation for the community to join in.

CWA member Pam Turnbull said the day is as relevant as when it first started.

“It’s really nice to be part of International Women’s Day (IWD) because women are meeting all over the world to celebrate their activities together,” she said.

“It’s just as relevant today as when it first started.”

The day has been observed since the early 1900s with its origins in Europe and North America from labour movements with Australia’s first International Women’s Day held in 1928 in Sydney.

CWA’s Tess Lucas said women are now accepted in many jobs traditionally undertaken by men.

“They’re in the fire brigade, police force and are pilots entering fields that once upon a time would have been a ‘no no,” she said.

With girls included in this year’s IWD logo the CWA members were thrilled to celebrate an up-and-coming young Beechworthian cricketer too.

Mary Edwards received the Indigo Shire’s Emma George Sports Scholarship at this year’s town celebrations on Australia Day.

Medical pioneer remembered ONE of Australia’s most extraordinary women was remembered on International Women’s Day. Member and Beechworth History and Heritage Society past president Elizabeth Mason highlighted Dame Jean Macnamara’s legacy to Australia’s medical and agricultural sectors and community as monumental.

“She was born and buried in Beechworth and not many people know about who she was,” Ms Mason said.

Dame Jean (1899–1968), a medical pioneer, had her life and extraordinary work honoured in a forum at last year’s Ian Jones Memorial program. One of her two daughters, a granddaughter and grandson attended the event held at the Town Hall.

A medical doctor and scientist, Dame Jean’s vital research into poliomyelitis during the 1920s and 1930s led to the identification of two strains of the polio virus.

This was pivotal in the later development of the salk vaccine.

She had also campaigned for the use of the myxoma virus to combat Australia’s rabbit infestation in the mid-20th century.

Humanity’ featuring portraits

by Melbourne artist George Petrou of Australians dedicated to humanitarian work is about to be published. It includes a biography of Dame Jean by Beechworth journalist Jamie Kronborg.

“Annie Jean Macnamara was born in Beechworth on April Fools’ Day in 1899,” Mr Kronborg said. “She was a student at Beechworth State School in her early years, and later a university graduate, medical scientist and orthopaedist.

“As a Rockefeller Foundation fellow in America in 1933 she was

asked to the White House to talk about advanced poliomyelitis research and treatment with President Franklin Roosevelt, A polio survivor.

“She was created Dame Commander of Order of the British Empire aged 36 in recognition of her work for the welfare of children and Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medallist at 54.

“Dame Jean was also a farmers’ champion for her dogged determination to force Australia’s mid-20th century governments to release the myxoma virus to combat the country’s devastating rabbit plague.”

Lions Club to showcase projects

By CORAL COOKSLEY A SHOWCASE of incredible work for the community over the last 66 years will take place at the end of this month by the local Lions Club at the Beechworth Servicemen’s Memorial Hall.

The club will take people on a journey through its community service telling its story through a variety of successful projects.

Clubs throughout Australia create many national projects and foundations including helping to fund medical research, mental health support and responding to natural disasters and emergencies.

The clubs are part of Lions International with its mission to globally improve health and well-being, strengthen communities and support those in need through humanitarian services and grants through its clubs and volunteers.

Beechworth Lions president John Eldrid said being a member creates friendships locally as well as around the region, nationally and internationally.

‘hone in’ on their public speaking skills with support from the local Lions Club.

A junior competition introduced four years ago to the town – from a long-standing Lions Club Australia project – sees winners trip to district and regional public speaking competitions while national con-

tests are planned to kick off in the near future.

“It’s going national, because of its popularity in giving students a chance to learn public speaking skills and build confidence,” Mr Eldrid said.

“For many years Lions has also combined with the local CWA and the Rotary Club of Beechworth to host the Australia Day breakfast on behalf of Indigo Shire Council.

Mr Eldrid said there were also annual disbursements to local community organisations as well as Lions embarking on a national campaign to plant one million trees across Australia by June 2027, raising funds for the Childhood Cancer Research Foundation and an eye health program in schools.

From Easter eggs hunts for kids at the Golden Horseshoes Festival, supporting ANZAC Day and Remembrance commemorations to helping with disaster relief during floods and bushfires, Lion members have made all projects possible.

“No matter where you go in Australia, if you’re on holidays, in the defence forces, change jobs and new to a town, there’s a Lions Club and you can meet up with a group of like-minded people,” Mr Eldrid said.

People are invited to the showcase at 1pm on Saturday, 29 March at the Beechworth Servicemen’s Memorial Hall with an afternoon tea to follow.

Cyclist dies in crash at Falls Creek A CYCLIST has died after a crash at Falls Creek on Sunday night.

Police said officers were called to Bogong High Plains Road after reports a bicycle had left the road about 7pm on 9 March.

“A yet-to-be formally identified male rider was located and treated at the scene but could not be revived,” a police spokesperson said.

The exact circumstances

surrounding the crash are yet to be established.

Police said the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Riders descended on Falls Creek for the Peaks Challenge ride on Sunday as cyclists

took on a 235km ride with 4000+ metres of climbing and a 13-hour deadline.

The incident follows an unrelated fatal crash in the Alpine area at Buffalo River on Saturday morning which claimed the life of a 23-yearold Queensland man.

Police will continue to be out in force for Operation Arid until 11:59pm Monday, in an effort to reduce road trauma on local roads.

Speeding Tesla nabbed at 171km/h LAST Thursday , 6 March at approximately 2:55pm, members from Wodonga Highway Patrol were travelling South on Federation Way just outside of Rutherglen, when they detected a Tesla travelling towards them at 171 km/h in

a 100 km/h speed zone.

The Tesla was intercepted by police and found to be driven by a 28-year-old man from Port Melbourne.

The speeding Tesla was impounded for a period of 30 days at a cost of $1225.

The speeding driver will be summonsed to appear in Court in relation to the matter.

Police said electric cars are capable of accelerating quickly and are fast but there are no excuses for these speeds on our roads.

AN exhibition titled Faces Incognito which explores our relationship with aspects of nature and the built environment, has opened at the Art Gallery on Ovens in Wangaratta.

Presented by Rutherglenbased artist Kerrie Ware, the exhibition looks at this sometimes combative relationship, through large format collage and photography.

Kerrie describes herself as a mixed media artist who is influenced by pattern, colour, the written word and texture.

“Creating is a passion and something I thoroughly im-

merse myself in,” she said.

“The pieces in this exhibition look at the connection of humankind to our environment through different mediums.

“Travel is at the heart of my photography and my work is often edited with effects to enhance the quirkiness of objects, places and people spied through the lens.”

Kerrie has sold her artwork locally and throughout Australia, as well as the Netherlands, Mexico and Singapore, where she lived for nine years.

She has held multiple solo exhibitions at Gallery 294 in

Corowa, won accolades for her photography, and participated in a number of regional exhibitions including the annual Art Gallery on Ovens 30 x 30 exhibition (receiving a highly commended award), Friends of the Gallery exhibitions in Corowa, the King Valley Art Show and the annual Rutherglen Tastes of Art Prize.

Get in tune for next weekend’s Yackandandah Folk Festival

There is not one bed in regional Victoria for teenagers in a mental health crisis. Border youth are sent to Box Hill. They are generally very unwell, and often taken in secure transport adding to their anxiety. They are removed from family and friends. It must change, those beds should be here.

NEXT weekend’s Yackandandah Folk Festival with top Australian musicians as well as great international performers from five different countries is set to draw more than 2000 visitors to the village.

Running for 26 years except for one impacted

by Covid-19, committee president Chris Smith said the festival has steadily grown from a one venue - one day event started as a fundraiser for the local primary school to a two-day vibrant festival.

“It just appears to hit the spot with patrons combining quality performers, small-time vibe, but then well organised for both ticket holders and performers,” he said.

“There has been an emphasis on family friendly, value for money, environment as well as country values bringing quality entertainment and arts into the community.”

Another 3000 people or more are expected to flock to the village for the Sunday markets organised by the Yackandandah Primary School over the weekend too.

Mr Smith said many community groups at the festival now run events, stalls and food services with three schools participating as well as most sporting clubs.

He said among many festival benefits for the village is a huge boost to its economy with more than 60 per cent of ticket holders from outside the region.

“A large ratio of people join in on stalls for their group, there’s billeting and volunteering and businesses having a good weekend assists in covering them during the quiet times during the year.”

Another is the small regional village can enjoy some of the top musical talent from all over Australia and around the world.

“Our performers get to appear with an appreciative audience, love the vibe and many overseas acts return,” he said.

“More and more visiting ticket holders get to enjoy the same talent as the large expensive festivals at a fraction of the ticket price where everyone wins.”

Mr Smith said part of the ticket price is allocated to Totally Renewable Yackandandah (TRY) with funds going into solar panels and batteries – another benefit for the community.

“The festival has contributed funds for panels where now the power generated is many times more than the power used during the festival weekend,” he said.

“Linking this with the Green Team who wash, recycle and compost the majority of consumption and materials over the weekend, the festival footprint is close to zero.

“By Monday morning the village is pristine and you would never know that there had been so many visitors to the village.”

Mr Smith said sale of tickets is capped to ensure that everyone can have a good time.

“Some venues may have a temporary

lockout, but there are plenty of other venue options available,” he said.

“We expect to sell 1700 tickets, there will be over 100 performers and then volunteers and billets with more than 2200 expected over the weekend, plus the Sunday market visitors.”

Mr Smith said every inch of the village is used for performance venues.

Increased energy resilience for retired residents NORTH East retirement village Yackatoon, Totally Renewable Yackandandah (TRY) and ambitious philanthropy come together in an innovative effort to support older residents during times of their greatest need.

The Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal (FRRR) has announced a grant for $57,500 to ensure residents in the Yackatoon Retirement Village have access to power during sustained outages or following emergencies.

The collaboration will see the installation of a 15kW solar array and 60kWh of batteries on the village’s communal hall facility and main office.

Each day, the energy system will provide electricity to the main shared facility, reducing costs and supporting Yackandandah’s broader efforts toward 100 per cent clean local electricity.

When power outages occur, the energy system can continue to deliver power to provide

residents with heating, cooling, cooking, personal care, social and lighting services at the hall, plus charge phones and other devices.

In addition, the battery will mean that resident’s personal alarm systems continue operating during outages, ensuring they can seek help if needed.

The balance of funding was provided by internal resources of the Yackatoon Village Management Committee and Totally Renewable Yackandandah.

Community-owned social enterprise YCDCo is also contributing $5000 to see this project succeed.

Yackatoon Retirement Village president Tricia Glass said the project was a realisation of a long planned for and critical goal – to deliver energy resilience for our residents, many of whom are vulnerable to extremes of heat or cold.

“We are thrilled in the trust and support offered by FRRR and YCDCo,” she said.

“This will make a real difference in our ability to support everyday older residents, and further action our Ageing in Place strategy which builds connection to community and wellness.”

TRY president Matthew Charles-Jones said he was excited by the plans.

“This project is yet another great Yackandandah example of collaborative thought resulting in tangible, real world benefits and positive change,” he said.

“Over the past few years, we have witnessed several extreme storm events resulting in the loss of power – this activity is a key response to that trend.

“Yack’s efforts on localised electricity are reducing exposure to increasing power bills, cutting carbon emissions, and providing the critical additional advantage of energy resilience.”

It is expected the system will be operational by late March.

Author shares experiences on Atauro Island in East Timor

MORE than 30 people gathered at Beechworth Library last Wednesday evening to hear an author’s story of living on Atauro Island portrayed in her memoir ‘Dancing on the Sea’.

One of Australia’s closest and poorest neighbours, the remote small island of Atauro in East Timor has a population of around 10,000 people.

A captivated audience, including members of the local group of Friend’s of Atauro Island, listened to Queenslandbased author Gabrielle Samson tell her compelling story with a touch of romance while living there at a time of political and social change.

Beechworth’s Dr Wendy Connor who interviewed Ms Samson for the library talk said

connecting with an old friend had been fantastic.

Dr Connor had first travelled to Atauro Island in 2004 when she began working as a volunteer doctor with the connection developing into the Friends of Atauro Island.

“I had heard many stories over the years and then to have them all together in a book with this beautiful love story running through has been such a pleasure to read and really special,” she said.

“The book is about a particularly intense six to eight year period leading up to the referendum and independence, and there’s a lot of political activity during that time.”

Dr Connor said questions canvassed topics such as the political tensions experienced, other experiences, a little

about her love story, the process of writing the book, why she wrote her memoir and the style.

Ms Samson said she spent more than a decade on the island from 1994, originally invited to help start a kindergarten in a small village community.

“I was going for six months to help train some teachers but I ended up saying 12 years,” she said Ms Samson said she worked with primary school teachers followed by working with high school teachers on their programs.

“After 2002 I helped the community start the library, and a community owned and run eco-tourism resort with a tourism education program for the island,” she said.

“The university I worked with was Indonesian and had pulled out.

“I felt very privileged to be there and was the only foreigner for the first six years.

“Because I love writing, and these experiences and people were so special to me I wrote the book to share.”

Librarian Julie said Ms Samson’s personal experience was an insight into quite an exotic story in many ways going to a remote place without electricity, phone or mail as well as her own perspectives on the fight for democracy and independence when living there.

“It seemed to be a wonderful chapter in her life, she’s still very involved and interested to hear about young people she knows, and what they’re doing now,” she said.

Under the new fund, emergency services volunteers will be exempt from paying the tax on their primary place of residence, but it leaves everyone else with yet another cost burden

that Indigo Shire councillors do not want their staff to collect.

In seconding the motion put forward by Cr Jane Dowsley for the mayor and CEO to advocate against the new levy at last Tuesday night’s monthly council meeting, Cr Diane Shepheard summed up the feeling among councillors.

“We’re under a rate cap system

and aware of every cent we’re spending of ratepayers money and having to budget tightly yet the state government is putting a 100 per cent increase in this fee that we are to implement and go on our rate notices,” Cr Shepheard said.

Party-time awaits the end of the marathon and fun runs WHEN you finish this year’s Wangaratta Chronicle Marathon and Fun Run events you are entering a party zone.

“It’s the ultimate place to celebrate with family and friends and even strangers that helped push you all the way to that finish line,” race director Liam Delany said.

“We will have water, 32Gi electrolyte drinks and zero alcohol sports beer to help rehydrate.

“Thanks to Wholefoods Wangaratta there will be heaps of fresh fruit to enjoy when you cross the line, and they will also have a stall with more fruit, snacks and drinks to purchase.

“There will be a barbecue with bacon and egg rolls and soft drinks as well as a couple of coffee carts to ensure everyone is feeling good.”

The finish zone will have plenty of tables and chairs to kick back and relax.

“It’s a beautiful setting with the green grass by the Ovens River,” Mr Delaney said.

“We will have some tunes as well as live music.”

Mr Delany will be on the microphone and looking forwards to interviewing some of the runners as they cross the line and get their medal.

Each race will have presentations with over $10,000 worth of prizemoney get-

ting handed out on the morning.

“The local business support for the event has been incredible, which is great for the event and Wangaratta,” Mr Delaney said.

“The event has received funding from the Rural City of Wangaratta council and they have carried out work on the course to make it safer and faster.”

Mr Delaney recommended the 2km Primary School Challenge event as a great way to get your children active and experience a professionally timed event.

All children get a race number and medal when they cross the line.

The top three girls and boys in U12, U10 and U8 get trophies and Wangaratta Intersport have donated some GVs as prizes for the overall 2km podium.

Parents wanting to accompany their children can do so for free in the second starting wave.

Entries will close at 5pm Friday, 14 March with no entries after this time.

Race numbers for all events can be picked up at the Wangaratta Chronicle office on Friday, 14 March from 2-5pm then Saturday at the start/finish precinct at the Wangaratta Showgrounds from 2-5pm and again on event morning 6am onwards.

By DYLAN POOL LAST Thursday there were 16 players who fronted up for twilight on the back nine at Beechworth Golf Club.

High scores are needed at this pointy end of the season to feature in the prizes with 27 points the winning score on the night with new member Simon Pfahlert having a great 25 points off the stick, added with his plus two four 27.

This meant that Dave Clark was relegated to second with his 18 plus 9.

Ball winners were Jackson Wells 26 and Josh Carr 23.

The Beechworth Bakery nearest the pin on the 10th went to Simon Pfahlert (only 4 inches away) and Josh Carr claimed the Alpine Indigo Accounting half dozen on the 17th.

Andy Croome took home all the cash with his chip in on the 14th.

The CC’s Quality Meats voucher was won by Brian Pritchard.

On Sunday the first Monthly Medal of the season was played.

Rod Shaw returned a great 65 nett to win by three shots from Jamie Dolny with 68.

Others close by were Andy Croome 72, Zane Howard 72, Daryl Rowe 73 abs Jackson Wells 74.

Only one nearest the pin went off and that went to Zane Howard on the 17th.

This coming Sunday will be a Stableford event at Beechworth - 11:30am for noon tee off.

Men’s pennant starts this week with one team playing at Albury and one team playing at Thurgoona.

BEECHWORTH’S under 16s had their season cut short in semi-final after going down to City Colts in their two-day match last weekend.

Choosing to bat first at the Barr Reserve in Wangaratta, the Wanderers were made

to grind away with the bat as opener Marshall Semmens (16) and Taylor Thomson (20) ticked over the runs.

But as Semmens and Will Prebble left for six, the floodgates began to open and Thomson was gone at 6/48.

Plenty to play for Beechworth could secure a top three finish with a win this weekend

Benalla will resume at 0/5 after surviving a single over before stumps with their main motivation an upset win to add some light to an otherwise bleak season.

Wanderers skipper Brenton Surrey has played enough cricket to know the game’s not over until the last wicket falls or the umps take the bails, and the Bushrangers have showed enough glimpses of their potential to prove they are still a challenge.

“I was pretty happy with our total at the Gardens, it

was probably worth 50 or 60 more if it had been at Beechworth,” Surrey said.

“Full credit to Benalla, they have some good kids who have a red hot go and I reckon they’ll look back on the season and think they could probably have won two or three more games than they did.”

He said the side’s fate was in the hands of his bowlers and they will have to be at their optimum to get the coveted third position sewn up.

“The key is definitely our bowlers, they’ll not only have to bowl well but the fielders will have to back them up to their best as well,” Surrey said.

“Brayden Stepien is a major threat.

“If he gets away from us there’s every chance they’ll be 200 at tea and it’s anybody’s game.”

C grade play Yarrawonga Mulwala at Stanley in the last game of the season while B grade missed out on finals so their season has come to an end.
