Covid-19 infections rising ALBURY Wodonga Health (AWH) and Beechworth Health Service (BHS) have confirmed two residents have tested positive to COVID-19 at Blackwood Cottage, Beechworth.

Blackwood Cottage is a residential mental health facility which is located within BHS, with operations run by AWH.

All Blackwood Cottage residents and all staff across the site have undertaken RAT and PCR tests earlier this week, with two residents returning positive results yesterday.

Families have been notified and a deep clean of the facility is under way.

Both health services are undertaking precautionary

measures to reduce the risks and maintain the safety of staff and patients in line with their outbreak management plans.

Visitor restrictions are already in place at Beechworth Health Service facilities and investigations are under way to determine how the residents contracted the virus.

Indigo Shire recorded

20 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday bringing the total active cases to 173 and a total of 333 since the pandemic began.

With the number of COVID-19 close contacts continuing to grow, Victoria’s public health team will provide more essential workers with an exemption from close contact

home isolation requirements to attend their workplace.

From 11:59pm, Tuesday, January 18, workers in emergency services, education, critical utilities, custodial facilities, transport and freight will join workers in the food production sector as being eligible for the exemption.

Pools to open on rostered basis

THE ongoing shortage of lifeguards together with the increasing number of positive COVID cases has forced Belgravia Leisure to introduce a rostering system for some local pools.

The company, which has been contracted to manage council’s five swimming pools, said the only way to ensure pools can open is to share the available lifeguards across multiple pools, a move that will see some pools close on a rostered basis in order to meet demand at others.

Belgravia Leisure and Indigo Shire Council acknowledge the decision is far from ideal, but given the current circumstances, it is the only viable option.

“Unfortunately the lifeguard shortage is not unique to Indigo Shire. shires across the state such as Alpine, Cardinia, Greater City of Bendigo, even the City of Melbourne, are experiencing the same challenges,” Belgravia Leisure Area coordinator Indigo/Alpine Shire Roh Taylor said.

Mr Taylor said that the national lifeguard shortage has been compounded by staff needing to isolate as a result of the high numbers of COVID cases in the community.

“It’s been the perfect storm to create a chronic shortage of staff. Businesses in all sectors across the country are experiencing staff shortages due to isolation requirements and unfortunately this has added to an already very challenging situation at our pools,” Mr Taylor said.

“The safety of our community is our number one priority and unfortunately to ensure that, the only way forward is to close some pools to ensure another can safely open,” Mr Ierino said.

“We know how important these facilities are for our communities and we are just as disappointed and frustrated as they are with the situation.

“However, we know given the similar challenges faced by neighbouring shires and

across the country, it isn’t a simple fix.

“Throw in the added complexities of navigating the pandemic, we understand that this is the best solution for the time being.”

Mr Ierino also acknowledged the work Belgravia Leisure has been undertaking to try to resolve the lifeguard shortage.

Belgravia is currently finalising a rostering system to determine which pools will close on what days and will be announcing further discounts for community members who have bought season passes this season.

Updates will be made on each pool’s Belgravia-managed Facebook page.

More RATs needed in regional areas - Maxwell VICTORIAN MP Tania Maxwell on Friday wrote to Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley last week, seeking an “urgent assurance” that the State Government will make rapid antigen test (RAT) kits quickly and readily available to already-vulnerable regional and rural communities, businesses and services in Northern Victoria.

“People in the communities I represent are struggling to access PCR testing, where necessary, and are confused by public health information about isolation requirements,” the Derryn Hinch’s Justic Party MP wrote.

“I understand that limited supplies of RAT kits have been distributed to the four busiest Melbourne testing centres and, while this is understandable, it is critical that regional communities, with very little capacity in these very difficult times, are not left without these resources to help manage an escalating crisis.

“At the same time, people in the communities I represent are struggling to access PCR testing, where necessary, and are confused by public health information about isolation requirements.

Government failure to support regional Australia in Omicron outbreak: Haines THE Federal Government squandered the opportunity to properly prepare for COVID-19 in the community, leaving regional health services under pressure, businesses struggling to operate and vulnerable people without support, accrding to Independent Federal MP for Indi Helen Haines.

Dr Haines criticised the lack of preparation and sudden shifts in policy by the Federal Government that have left the public confused and distressed; and put extra strain on health services as numbers of COVID-19 in the community increase.

“I have been in contact with the local Public Health Unit, the Primary Health Network, GPs, pharmacists and hospitals to get an accurate account of the local situation with COVID-19, and while I am confident in their staff and expertise, I am so angry to hear how they have been let down by the government,” Dr Haines said.

“Weary front-line health staff are learning of policy changes at the same time as the public. GP practices have told me that their phones rang off the hook after the Prime Minister announced that we should contact our GP if we test positive on a rapid test.

“Many of the same practices are trying to manage their own staff shortages and facilitate booster shots while also preparing to vaccinate children before school starts.

“Last week a small local health service in Indi was forced to temporarily close its acute and urgent care service, because a significant number of staff were in isolation and there was no surge workforce available.

If someone needed care during that time they would have needed to travel a long distance to a bigger town or call 000.”

Dr Haines said Australians were right to feel let down and ask how the government could be caught so unprepared despite being almost two years into the pandemic and health experts sounding the alarm about the omicron variant.

“I wrote to Prime Minister Scott Morrison in September last year, calling for extra resources and planning for regional health services to prepare for the next stage of the pandemic,” Dr Haines said.

“After spending the majority of my career as a nurse and midwife in regional Victoria it was plain to see that COVID-19 would put unacceptable pressure on

Indigo U3A find a new home

By MARK STEPHENS INDIGO U3A members are delighted to finally hold the lease on the old Beechworth Railway Station.

U3A president Rosemary Ryan said that the news came as a great relief as many hours had been spent on preparing a detailed Expression of Interest document for Indigo Shire Council.

According to treasurer

Richard Maskiell, members regard the old building as the perfect home for University of the Third Age with its obvious connections to Beechworth History.

“There are five usable rooms including an activities area, rooms for small groups, the kitchen, and the office space,” he said.

“Our lease is for at least 12 months and at last we can develop our own schedule.”

This year U3A is planning

to hold its enrolment day on Thursday, January 20 at the Beechworth Memorial Hall opening at 10am.

There will be short presentations and opportunities to talk to tutors and peers.

Coffee and tea will be available.

Applications open for hosting emergency services expo APPLICATIONS to host next year’s North East Emergency Expo have opened, with emergency service volunteers set to flock to the region for the single day showcase.

The fourth instalment of the event will follow successful showings at Whorouly in 2016, Moyhu in 2018 and Nagambie last year, in an effort to proy mote resources and support networks for emergency service personnel before, during and after emergencies.

The event, organised by North East Emergency Action Group Incorporated (Neeag Inc) offers networking opportunites for emergency organisations, support groups and community groups to discuss their emergency response protocols, while also fundraising for local emergency organisations.

To be eligible to host the event, applicants must represent a North East town or community of less than 5000 people, provide a suitable location such as

a high school, recreation reserve or football oval, and nominate a charity or project to fundraise for.

To nominate to host the event, applicants can send an email to Neeag Inc president Carina Newton at expo@neeag.org.au before February 25, and should be no longer than one page in length.

Public voting will then decide the top five applicants, who will then enter a formal application process ahead of the 2023 event.

BEECHWORTH Lions Club are celebrating their wonderful win in the V6 District of the Lions Clubs International Foundation Competition.

Lions Club secretary Iris Mannik said that it was a great honour to receive the prestigious award being one of only two winners out of 52 clubs in the V6 District, which covers Northern Victoria and Southern New South Wales.

Treasurer Christine Luckman agreed and said that a great deal of work went into the application, which detailed the large

number of projects undertaken including repair of the Platelayers Cottage, bushfire recovery, Volunteers Expo, leadership and organisation and the training session at Corryong.

He said constituents from across the electorate have reached out to his office regarding the closures and disrepair of these sites.

“Their motives are largely driven by what appears to be a lack of interest or will to find ways that these could be either re-opened, made safer or simply repaired,” Mr Tilley said.

Beechworth “In September 2020, closure tape was placed on a section of the 10-kilometre trail that follows Silver Creek. This popular trail in Beechworth has been heavily patronised by locals and tourists alike without issue. The open-ended closure was attributed to “the level of risk from open and semi-open mine shafts”.

The Parks Victoria website still carries the same message as it did in April of this year.”

mines produced more than $3 billion in gold while a nearby gold battery is heritage registered and restored at a cost of $50,000 after the 2003 fires. Today you have to scale two fences to get to the battery. Tracks are overgrown and have fallen into disrepair. Blackberries and other weeds surround the battery itself. I have asked the Minister for the Environment to expedite these matters in early December.”

Mr Tilley said he understood that there will always be issues that demand periodic closures for safety and improvements, but we all expect these can be done in a reasonable time.

“These examples don’t pass the pub test even allowing for the limitations created by COVID-19 restrictions,” he said.

“The Beechworth Heritage group offered some ideas that would improve and enhance the visitor experience but again there appears to be little appetite for any works in this area.

“The fact is that this seems the ‘new normal’ of Parks Victoria whether I’m at the Hampton Pier or Chiltern, the simplest solution is just to close it down.”

Project making sense of smoke impact on North East grapes

By ANITA McPHERSON A PROJECT involving the installation of sensors in vineyards which will help grape growers make early decisions about their crop after smoke impact, is set to ramp up in the New Year.

The new smoke taint detecting sensors, developed by a team headed by La Trobe University Professor Ian Porter, will allow growers to gather real time data from a site which can accessed at any time via an app on their phone.

A total of 100 sensors will roll out to sites across North East wine regions in two tranches next year, with the first 40 expected to be in place by the end of January and the remaining 60 by April.

Dr Porter said the sensors will log data for a risk assessment app, which is also being developed in the project, with the aim of having them up and running fully by the next season.

He said this season will be about validating the operation of the sensors and ensuring growers become familiar with the risk rating thresholds they will transmit

during any controlled burns or bushfires that occur.

“The science behind this has been researched over six years so we’ve tried to get every aspect of a very complex area covered, whether it is different levels of smoke dose, grape and wine diagnostics, mitigation practices and sensory levels,” he said.

“We’re confident now that we’ve got the relationship between all those factors and risks very well covered, which is critical for something like this.”

“A grower will be able to make a call in real time, any time.”

Using what is believed to be world-first technology, the app operates with a traffic light type of warning system, so when there is smoke in the air, a grower can get a clear indication of how it may be affecting their crop.

A ‘green’ reading will indicate there is nothing to be concerned about, an ‘orange’ may point to the potential of needing to take action (if the smoke remains), while a ‘red’ means the first level of mitigation may be required to offset potential taint.

Dr Porter said it is a risk tool to be used in conjunction with

all aspects of science known about for dealing with smoke taint.

But he is confident in its accuracy, saying it will reduce the need for multiple, expensive analytical tests and inform production decisions.

“The early warning system is incredibly valuable because you can make an early decision on whether to pick fruit or not,” he said.

“In a major bushfire, it will mean you can make a decision on whether to invest 25 per cent of your input costs (incurred between a smoke event and harvest) on expenses such as spraying for disease and the labour required to pick.

“So you could minimise the financial cost of these events by making a decision early.”

Dr Porter said people in the North East region in particular are already well informed and familiar with working with smoke.

He said this tool will make them more informed during the controlled burn season, particularly coming to the fore during bushfire events when it is “make or break”.

“They may not use it much during the year, but when a bushfire happens, that’s when they will really look at it and

want to know what’s going on - that’s when it will be really useful,” he said.

“It will tell you straight away whether to worry or not.”

“We have utilized information used for the warning system on a massive number of controlled burns and a large number of bushfires over the last six years, and we wouldn’t have been comfortable rolling it out until we’d done that.”

The sensor’s development has been funded through grants received by the North East Wine Zone (NEWZ) representing the Alpine Valley, King Valley, Glenrowan, Beechworth and Rutherglen wine regions.

It includes an $870,000 federal government Regional Economic Stimulus and Resilience grant received by Wines of the King Valley, following the 2020/2021 bushfires, with co-investment by La Trobe University and Wine Australia.

Those bushfires alone are estimated to have cost the North East wine industry more than $140 million in losses.

Dr Porter said the sensors cost in the region of $1000 each, making them an affordable tool for wine businesses in any smoke affected or bushfire prone regions.

SMOKE PLUME: The new smoke taint detecting sensors have been tested in the field and will be a valuable warning system, helping local growers make an early decision on whether to pick their fruit.

Sharing transport a way to help people living out of town Lesley Baker, Yackandandah LESLEY Baker was born at Albury Base Hospital during the Second World War when Blackie House was a new addition to the health facility. She lived in Albury until 1952 when at the end of her primary school days moved to Urana in 1953 followed by a later shift to boarding school in Melbourne. After she married, with many years living in Melbourne and her husband’s wish to live in the country, the couple moved closer to family and found their home at Yackandandah in 1986.

What’s your job?

As a retiree, my job at the moment is being a grandmother and friend.

What did you do in your career?

After my school days I worked in various roles until I commenced my hospital-based general nursing course at Footscray and District Hospital.

Three years later and with my staff year completed in the fourth year, I started midwifery at Queen Victoria Hospital in Tasmania.

What do you do in the community?

Presently I do not have any role in the community as such. I am the Holy Trinity Anglican Church warden, minute taker for the Parish Council and volunteer for the

Victorian Council of Churches Emergency Ministry. The latter is an interdenominational group that goes into areas of crisis to help.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

COVID-19. The scarcity of RAT tests is a little daunting although our wonderful pharmacy has been trying to source these rare commodities. Public transport can be an issue too, as so many live out of town in the Yackandandah area, and unless one can have access to a car, it can be a very long walk to the nearest bus stop.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

A strength of our community is pulling together in stressful times where people are very supportive of each other.

I would encourage people to share transport, ask neighbours if they need anything the shops or give them a lift if they are unable to drive. Perhaps an ondemand shuttle bus could be a solution.

We had community cars in our shire at an affordable cost. Since then, we have a taxi and the bus line stopping in Yackandandah and Beechworth. The car is less visible now.

What are some of the most important current world issues for you?

Blaming someone for what is going wrong. The absence of meaningful plain talk without hidden agendas. Compassion being mistaken for weakness. The apparent ever-increasing division of rich and poor, people and countries. We

need to encourage kindness and compassion and fair dealing.

Huge population growth and housing developments that are built seemingly without due planning for the maintenance of roads, schools, aged care, transport, medical care, accessibility of all as well as sustainable affordable energy.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

A cousin who unfortunately died last year. He was a Catholic priest, a musician, linguist, joke teller, leg puller, and a really fun man with many interests.

I would take him to the Burke Museum in Beechworth, the old vine tree in Chiltern, Woolshed Falls, Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park including the Yeddonba Aboriginal Cultural Site, the Kars goldmine and to see the organ at St Matthews in Albury and at Wangaratta.

We would also go on a winery crawl, look around the old tin mines, and have a pan for gold at Reedy Creek.

Why would you show him that?

Tim loved nature. To wander, breathe, eat, see and do things in our wonderful area would be such a joy for him.

What book are you reading?

I have just finished reading Dark Emu

by Bruce Pascoe - a thought provoking book about colonial history written by early European settlers. The light needs to be shone on some of our biases on retelling history.

WDCA women prepare for grand final push

By RYAN MALCOLM THE top of the table WDCA Beechworth women’s cricket team is set to host their first hit out of the new year, when Bamawm-Lockington United make the trek to the Barr Reserve in Wangaratta on Sunday.

Sitting pretty on 26 points with a two wins, one draw and one loss record, the group will look to press their advantage against fourth placed United, after their round one clash was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Assistant coach Stephen Hicks believes Sunday’s clash will lay the foundation for the team’s push towards a grand final berth, with only five games (including a bye) remaining in the season.

“To play a home game at this stage is really important,” he said.

“We’re likely going to be short of players, we’ve got two playing at Carlton in Grace Kerwin and Sienna Sims and we’re missing Abby McConchie, Alyssa Priest and Sophie Panozzo at junior country week.

“But we’ve got a core group who have set us up really well before Christmas - we’re quite settled.”

Coach and former Western Australia state representative Kate Burns will be looking to build on her strong finish to last calendar year, when

she amassed 38no against Shepparton-Youth Club United before tearing through the batting line up, claiming careerbest bowling figures of 5/4.

“Having Kate Burns take on the coaching role has helped - there’s a consistent message there for the team,” he said.

“The 30-over game suits our team better with the bowling stocks we have - similarly the batters have a chance to get themselves in.

“We’ve really got to bank these games against sides below us - and not just win you’ve got to have convincing wins.

The top two teams at the end of the season will head directly into a grand final showdown, to be hosted by the first-placed team.

Hicks believes the team is well prepared to secure a positive result against Bamawm.

“We have Alex Randell who will open the batting for us - she’s a steady player who represented the North East Knights,” he said.

“Crystal Stevens will play - she spent time at Ringwood in the thirds and is a really reliable left arm bowler and will bat in our middle order.

“Those experienced players this year are helping bring the young girls through.”

Sunday’s fixture is set to get under way at 11am at the Barr Reserve’s Bill O’Callaghan Oval.

Lost round on replay THE Wangaratta and District Cricket Association was forced to cancel its matches last weekend off the back of a week of constant rainfall.

This weekend was scheduled to host a double header of T20s, however, the association has decided to cancel those fixtures and the T20 competition due to the current COVID-19 climate.

Instead, the weekend’s cancelled games will be rescheduled to this Saturday, January 15.

“A grade and A reserve were meant to play the second round of T20s but having teams moving around isn’t ideal in the current COVID climate,” Hoysted said.

“There’s no certainty around COVID-19 so we decided to cancel the T20 competition all together.”

“We’ve said that if any games are affected by COVID we will reschedule them to a later date and if that can’t happen we will make the game a draw and not a

forfeit.”

Beechworth’s A grade side will host Ovens Valley United at Baarmutha Park, while the C grade outfit will play a home game out of Mayday Hills.

The A reserve match against Rovers United Bruck has been ruled as a draw.

The anniversary match of the historic clash in 1862 between an All England 11 and the Ovens District 22 which was scheduled to be played last Saturday will be held at a later date.

This Sunday will be the first round of the Summer Cup. The format is four rounds of Stableford played over the

space of a couple of months with the best 3 scores determining the winner.

The usual start time of 12:30pm for 1pm is the go.

This is open to men and women and if you organise your own playing partners you can play at any time on the day.
