The grants have been funded by Westpac Agribusiness that teamed up with the forum’s major partner, the Westpac Foundation.

The Social Enterprise World Forum is the leading forum for international exchange and collaboration in social entrepreneurship and social investment.

The Rural Forum is specifically focused on fostering entrepreneurship in local communities and will address the unique

Young local sets off for overseas study

By CORAL COOKSLEY A CHANCE to spend six months at school in a different culture overseas is an exciting adventure for a local Year 10 high school student.

Galen Catholic College’s Emilie Vincent from Stanley will head to either Italy or Germany in July as a Rotary Youth Exchange student sponsored by Beechworth Rotary Club.

Hearing about the Rotary program from friends in Canberra, Emilie said they encouraged her to apply as it had been a great experience for them.

“I’ve been able to meet many people already through the application process and am looking forward to the cultural experience, new opportunities opening up, and making new life-long friends,” she said.

“I will be able to go back overseas as there will be friends to stay with too,” she said.

Living with a Rotary host family, the 15-year old, who will be 16 when she departs for international shores, will be a year 11 student at a Rotary connected school before returning to Galen will go straight into year 11 next year.

“It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever done,” an excited Emilie said.

Beechworth Rotary Club president Larry Goldsworthy said the exchange program is an opportunity for local youth to expand their horizons, and to learn and appreciate different cultures by being immersed in a family home in a different country.

“It’s much more than what you experience as a tourist,” he said.

“Students come home with enhanced interpersonal skills, a greater awareness of what can be achieved in life wand are well placed to be leaders in their own communities.”

Mr Goldsworthy said the club had supported many exchange students over the last 49 years.

“We understand how significant the positive impact can be on their young lives,” he said.

“It is a ‘privilege to serve’ and as a club, our efforts and fundraising through markets we hold is all about helping our local and wider community.”

“Emilie will have one the greatest experience in her young life where the flow on effect and how she uses the opportunity will continue to be positive for all of us for years to come.”

The club president said as an exchange student back in the 80’s he understood the profound effect it can have on life.

Funding fills up glass LOCAL wineries, breweries and distilleries will be able to invest in upgrading their cellar door facilities, with a $15m investment by w the Federal Government set to allow businesses throughout the region to access up to $100,000 in matched funding.

The funding injection would also see a $5m investw ment into the Wine, Spirits and Craft Breweries Tourism Events program, with up to $100,000 available to tourism and local government organisations to further solidify Indi as a tourism hotspot.

“I help social enterprises reach their potential,” he said.

Mr Grogan also said he had been lucky enough to attend a word forum in Scotland in 2018 with Australian Centre for Rural Entrepreneurship (ACRE) founder Matt Pfahlert.

“It’s about education, networking and learning about what other social enterprises do around the world,” he said.

ACRE chief executive Clayton Neil said part of the Social Enterprise World Forum this year in Brisbane is the support exercise with the rural gathering hosted by ACRE in Beechworth.

“There is an amazing social enterprise movement in North East Victoria and with Matt Grogan actively involved with Indigo Power, shire undertakings, and recently with Kilowatt cars, he is a logical recipient of one of the grants,” he said.

“Each of the other recipients is equally impressive.”

“Social enterprises that Matt is involved with will feature prominently in the rural gathering and will be a hands-on experience,” he said.

“A three day tour will look at social enterprises across the North East and will finish in a forum at the Old Beechworth Gaol where government and philanthropic organisations will be involved too,” he said.

“We will be looking at issues facing rural communities, and the role that those organisations can play.”

Two mates raise $21K for cancer research

By CORAL COOKSLEY TEAMMATES Beechworth’s Roger Humphris and Torquay’s Steve Cooper are due to cross the finishing line in at the Mackay Showground in Queensland this afternoon for the ‘Autumn Shitbox Rally’ finish.

The pair set off last Friday for the seven day gruelling outback road trip from Wollongong in NSW via Tibooburra to Mackay to raise awareness for the Cancer Council and cancer research with their entry ‘Team Trailer Park Trash.’

A year in the making working towards the event, Roger said their car, an early model Holden Viva made in Korea, had been given to them which they resurrected.

Roger said everything had gone to plan as well as having many sponsors.

As the driving duo rocketed along hitting muddy roads this week among other challenges, dollars have driven up for their entry ‘Team Trailer Park Trash’ for cancer research.

With two ‘shitboxes’ dead within the buddy group of vehicles on Monday at Tibooburra, Steve and Roger made room for two drivers in their vehicle - an entry condition if other team’s cars packed up.

Before the pair left last Friday, Roger said dollars received had exceeded expectations.

“People have been very generous for a good cause,” he said.

Roger said money was generated in small towns by around 500 people rolling up when the rally arrived, inject around $200,000 into those communities along the way.

“It helps those communities and we’re doing our bit as well,” he said.

Excited to be part of the team, Steve said he had never heard of the event when Roger invited him on the rally.

“I didn’t know it even existed, it looked good and now I’m going to places that I haven’t been to and it’s for a very good cause,” he said.

“Both my in-laws died of cancer and we have their names on the car which is symbolic of what we’re about.

“We set a target of $15,000 and have exceeded it by more than

$6500 with 100 per cent of funds raised going to the Cancer Council.

“We would like to acknowledge our sponsors and those of the caravan park industry that both Roger and I are involved in as they have been sensational as well as others who have donated.”

The car will be donated to the charity for auction in Mackay where proceeds go to Cancer Council as well.

With 250 cars in the autumn rally, more than $2 million has been raised where the tally increased daily.

The Shitbox Rally with various events over the last 12 years has raised more than $30 million for Cancer Council research.

IT‘S Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) Day on May 18; a day to say “thank you” to our Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) volunteers.

VICSES North East Region volunteers responded to more than 3500 calls for help in the last 12 months, providing assistance with over 2100 downed trees, nearly 300 damaged buildings and 190 road rescues.

During the busiest year in VICSES history, volunteers supported local communities throughout the North East during flood, storm, landslide, road rescue, search and rescue events.

That‘s why we‘re asking Victorians to wear a splash of orange on WOW Day as a show of thanks, for the invaluable contribution our volunteers have made to our state.

Not least among our heroic volunteers is VICSES Wangaratta Unit Controller, Jess Zuber.

Though only 35, Jess has been volunteering since she was a little girl buttering sandwiches for the Red Cross.

Jess was formerly VICSES Chiltern Unit Controller, where she joined in 2014 as part of a crew of six, subsequently expanding the volunteer workforce at the unit to 35!

Jess is continuing that work at VICSES Wangaratta Unit, where they are expanding their workforce number and their skills, with training and specialist pathways for new and existing members.

In her time at Chiltern, Jess and her crew provided the most support of any unit in the North East outside of their catchment area; supporting other VICSES Units throughout the region, and other agencies.

VICSES is lucky to have volunteers like Jess, as is her community. We thank Jess this WOW Day for her tireless efforts on behalf of communities across the North East.

So wear a splash of orange next Wednesday, and look out for the hashtag #ThankYouSES and #WOWday.

Byawatha local aims for Senate prize

By BRODIE EVERIST SENATE candidate Susan Benedyka was in Wangaratta on Wednesday, as part of a long Victoria-wide campaign to win a seat at this month’s federal election.

According to Ms Benedyka, she has been campaigning since October last year, and has spoken to voters across almost all of Victoria.

She is campaigning on four key platforms - strong climate policies, building national resilience to disasters and crises, political integrity and accountability, and building inclusion through reforming welfare, improving aged care and supporting the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

She has been travelling across Victoria in her Senate campaign - after talking

to voters at the prepolling station on Ford Street she planned to campaign in Wodonga later that day.

The next day she was going to hand out how-to-vote cards in Mansfield and Benalla, and then attend a politics in the pub event in Warburton that night.

She said that many voters are bringing up political integrity and climate issues, but particularly emphasized housing as an issue across the state.

“I’m hearing about housing, and it’s everything from social housing, to housing affordability, to rental affordability, to even the availability of housing, and then not being able to get workers to do all the construction work that’s needed,” she said.

And there’s a palpable

feeling for people under 40 about totally being excluded from being able to buy a house.”

Ms Benedyka lives in Byawatha and has been living in North East Victoria since 2000.

She is the managing director of a Wangaratta-based consulting company that works in facilitation, strategic planning and engagement.

She asked people to be intentional about voting.

“Go to column T - T for trust, independent to a T, and that’s where you find me,” she said.

“It’s a job half done if we only get good independents into the lower house.

“We need that same respectful considered debate going on in the Senate as well.”

Haines spruiks energy plan INDEPENDENT member for Indi Helen Haines visited the home of Wangaratta resident Peter Gotham on Tuesday to spruik her energy plan for households.

The proposal, which Haines tabled in Parliament in February, would cut the cost of home batteries by up to $3000 and would offer $5000 zero-interest loans to households wanting to install solar, batteries, or ultra-efficient electrical heating systems and appliances.

“Cost of living is the single biggest thing that’s worrying people right now, and energy costs are one of the biggest line items on a family budget,” she said.

“We need to have a system that enables everyday

people on average incomes to get appliances in their home that save them money.”

Under the scheme, home batteries will be eligible to earn renewable energy certificates, which they can sell to electricity retailers to offset the installation cost of new batteries.

“The cost of a battery is still way too expensive for an average family,” she said.

“And one way to start getting that price down, is to include it in that legislation with the certification and rebate scheme.”

According to Peter Gotham, his new 13.5kwh Tesla battery will save him more than $700 a year, but they are too expensive.

“Our battery cost $16,000, which is out of reach for most people, he said.

“Helen is proposing to make batteries cheaper so more people can install them and start saving money, and that’s a great thing.”

Dr Haines said the proposal would drive down the price of home batteries, similar to government schemes for solar panels.

“We know under John Howard the legislation he introduced to make rooftop solar cheaper for everyday people really worked,” she said.

“We’ve got 34 per cent of all rooftops and family homes with solar - that legislation needs to be brought up to the next century.”

First neighbourhood house for Chiltern showcased

By CORAL COOKSLEY INDIGO Shire Council mayor Bernard Gaffney officially opened Chiltern’s first neighbourhood house at its Indigo North Health premises on Tuesday.

Indigo North Health chief executive Shane Kirk described the town’s health facility as now a one stop shop for the local community.

After a 2018 community survey outcome identified the need for a neighbourhood house, wheels turned in motion to work towards establishing one.

An upgrade to existing facilities that had been the Bush Hospital some years ago was made possible with a $400,000 Victorian Government grant applied for

by Indigo North Health that auspiced the neighbourhood house.

“We were able to get funding for the neighbourhood house and also for refurbishment,” Mr Kirk said.

Mr Kirk said Indigo North Health had always provided primary care services at the health facility with the neighbourhood house included on the premises.

“Community members can come here for their allied services such as podiatry and jump in at the same time for a neighbourhood house activity,” he said.

Neighbourhood house coordinator Maree Murphy, who had earlier been a volunteer coordinator for Indigo North Health, said the community had access to health services as well as added activities.

“It’s what people needed and asked for and we have different groups that have relocated here such as the local Red Cross branch, spinning and weavers, those who play mahjong as well as having yoga classes,” she said.

Among community activities and services offered are accredited training programs such as First Aid and responsible service of alcohol (RSA).

“We have volunteers who help out and it’s a great community facility with lots of activities and it’s so good to see the building well used,” Ms Murphy said.

In his address, Cr Gaffney said the facility is special place where people can go for their physical, mental and social well-being.

He said among allied health services included podiatry, physiotherapy, maternal health and those for elders in the community as well as the variety of neigbourhood house activities.

Spinning and weaving group member Sandy Thornhill-Cole who drives from Wangaratta said the facility is a great space for their activity.

“It’s a good environment, well organised and everyone feels at home,” she said.

Spinner and weaver Marion Stewart loved the constantly bright room.

“We have tea and coffee facilities and the neighbourhood house accommodates everyone who wants to come here,” she said.

Mr Kirk said the neighbourhood house also offered produce from Wo-

donga Food Share for people doing it tough it.

“It’s another service that we can offer to people in the community,” he said.

With the facility designed for many services be it physical and mental health support, or the ability to socialise, Mr Kirk said all services provided are important.

The official opening had been delayed by COVID impacts.

David backs 5% minimum wage rise LABOR’S candidate for Indi, Nadia David, strongly supports Opposition leader, Anthony Albanese’s, push for a five per cent increase to the minimum wage.

“This is a no-brainer,” Ms David.

“The least paid workers in our community are the ones doing it the hardest.

“They are the cleaners, care workers and retail workers who kept turning up during the pandemic.

“Their wages have gone backwards over the nine years and a five per cent bump to the minimum wage would bring them only to parity with inflation,” she said.

Mr Albanese first backed a five per cent minimum wage rise on Tuesday when asked by journalists.

Since that time, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has claimed businesses wouldn’t be able to afford it and it would have a negative impact on inflation.

“This is just fantasy from Mr Morrison,” Ms David said.

“Businesses are doing better than ever and making more profits and have more confidence in the economy.

“Business failure rates are the lowest they’ve been in decades.

“It’s time businesses shared a tiny portion of their profit with the workers who gave it to them.

“A five per cent increase to minimum wage is about a dollar per hour.

“It’s hardly the 400% plus increase to the Prime Minister’s salary we’ve seen in the last 10 years.

“Executive salaries rose to record highs in 2021 while the lowest paid workers wages stagnated.

New dining experience in Yackandandah

By CORAL COOKSLEY GUESTS at the opening of a new dining experience in Yackandandah on Saturday night enjoyed a tantalising four course array of exquisite dishes for the special occasion.

A charcuterie and cheese board began for starters with sweet and sour eggplant, fresh chilli and lime; scallops in pea puree with crispy panchetta to sous vide duck breast in red cabbage puree, heirloom carrots and jus among first, second and third courses accompanied by choices of top quality wines.

The menu finished with a mouth watering desert of rocky road and deep fried icecream.

The new café, the Stockroom and Pantry, with its casual dining, dram shop and seasonal menu, is located in the heart of the town is a new venture by Star Hotel owners Matt and Kim Frauenfelder.

A new addition to Main Street with a fresh cuisine taste, Mr Frauenfelder said the business couple wanted to offer something completely different to the pub.

He said the idea of a café is for locals and travellers to have different dining experience where there will also be a focus on local produce and high quality wines.

“It’s a lot more vegetarian with smaller portions too,” he said.

“It also gives our executive chef another style of menu working between the pub and café.”

“It’s great to offer another option and support the community,” he said.

Business and operations manager Julian James said the café had been filled to capacity on the opening night.

“The café is a little upmarket with wine and cuisine where the menu will be regularly changing and we have table service too,” he said.

Carefully allocate federal funding for industries hit by lockdowns and travel restrictions. Tourism, hospitality, retail and health have all lost staff and their valuable experience and all need help with sourcing and training staff.

Subsidise small businesses in all tourism and hospitality sectors by providing discount vouchers and other incentives for locals and tourists to visit accommodation and hospitality venues.

Fund mental health outreach programmes and expand existing services to support all community members in their emotional and mental health recoveries, with a particular focus on youth.

As a barrister, I have a good understanding of the law and how it works at all levels of government. I know how to keep sitting governments accountable for their actions and how to make sure they stick to their promises. Hospital ramping is a key part of the problem, leaving ambulances banked outside of regional hospitals waiting for a bed. Three things I would pursue to aid local recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are, firstly I would look to getting people back into work, ending the workplace vaccine mandates and believe the vaccine mandates are assisting with the workplace shortages. I would attempt to implement One Nation’s health policy to assist with the health system crisis at the moment and I would fight for a royal commission into the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, as One Nation’s policy states not to lay blame but to learn and be better prepared if and when the next pandemic comes along.

I believe all voters in the Indi electorate should look at all party policies and meet with the candidates if possible to help them decide who to vote for. I believe you can’t vote for who you don’t believe in and believe the policies should align with the individuals values.

As Indi’s elected representative, I would focus on increasing resilience to aid local recovery from the impacts of the pandemic. The Greens will close the gender pay gap, and give casual and contract workers access to protections and entitlements, protecting the rights of all workers. We will support recovery in the arts industry, which brings income into communities across Indi, with additional recovery funding and pandemic insurance for live events. As experts advise, we will fund schools to install high efficiency particulate air filtration systems in all classrooms and communal indoor areas, to protect the health of students and teachers.

In balance of power, the Greens will push the next government to take action on climate change, including no new coal and gas, seriously address gender pay equality, bring dental and mental health into Medicare, create affordable housing, a fully-resourced NDIS, wipe student debt and make uni/TAFE free again, free childcare, quality aged care, and make billionaires and big corporations to pay their fair share of tax. The government has programs to assist people to buy a home, to assist social housing enterprises and local government to develop more housing. The recovery from the pandemic is resulting in inflation. As a mother and small business owner, I understand cost pressures and the importance of good financial management. Voters in Indi know what they are getting with a vote for me, Liz Fisher. Years volunteering in my community show I genuinely care. Operating a successful business, I understand financial management and providing employment to others. Being a farmer and one of 10 children, I am practical and look to innovative solutions to problems. Fundamentally, I know that getting things done is achieved by being part of the team that makes decisions.

Housing. Renewable energy. Manufacturing.

These three things are inextricably linked and making sure we have enough housing for people who already live here, as well as those who want to live here, means we can build back our manufacturing capability and kick start Indi’s economy again. We should make renewable energy industry components, electric vehicles, textiles for our sports players and ADF here in Wangaratta. We need to grow our trades with free TAFE. We need to plug in to cheap clean energy. Enough housing will mean hospitality and retail businesses can operate at full capacity once more.

Because I’m the only one who will actually get things done in Indi. We’ve had Liberals, we’ve had Nationals, we’ve had Independents, but the same problems persist and now we’re in the worst position we’ve ever been. We can’t trust Scott Morrison to deliver what he promises. He never has. Only Labor has the plans and the will to get things done and I’ll be part of that team.

The Liberal Democrats will increase the tax-free threshold to $40,000 (from $18,200) in order to encourage workers to re-enter the workforce to overcome the workforce shortage in Indi.

We will also introduce a flat tax rate of 20%, so that the people of Indi will be taxed fairly and not be penalised for working harder or longer hours.

The Liberal Democrats will abolish company tax on re-invested profits in Australia. This will encourage businesses to invest in themselves and provide more jobs in Indi to compensate for jobs that disappeared during the Covid pandemic.

Vote for the Liberal Democrats because they are the only party that has reasonable, sensible policies which address the issues that concern voters.

The Liberal Democrats’ policies are gentle and progressive. They have been proven to work everywhere they are implemented. For example, there are dozens of countries that use nuclear power safely for clean, reliable, baseload energy.

I’m running for Indi because I never want to see business and community crippled again because of decisions politicians make. As we emerge from COVID, I want to build a stronger future for the North East, founded on a strong economy. To do this I will work with the private sector to attract manufacturers to our region and boost our defence manufacturing here in Indi. I will strengthen the North East as a nationwide tourism destination, putting local business at the core. I will ensure businesses are confident to invest in our region, with investment in underpinning infrastructure - road, rail, renewables and health.

I’m running because businesses and communities told me they felt abandoned in their time of need. It is more important than ever that we have an MP focused on the economy and local investment, because only with a strong economy can we deliver essential services we rely on. I am focused on growing jobs, reducing the cost of living, and increasing investment that sets us up for generations to come.

I know times are tough, with the costs of groceries, fuel and power going up.

And because of this I’ve put forward detailed plans to boost affordable housing and lower power prices – two key drains on the household budget. Second, we need to invest in our local health system by bringing more healthcare workers to our region. My plan is to triple the number of doctors we train locally, and bring more psychologists and psychiatrists to the regions by offering university debt relief. Third, we need to guarantee our economic recovery by investing in tourism, renewable energy, and local manufacturing.

Reliving the middles ages

By CORAL COOKSLEY MORE than 100 medieval history lovers from around Australia gathered at Beechworth Servicemen’s Memorial Hall on Saturday for a special ceremony.

Murray Region Medieval Group - Bordescros SCA that has run for more than 20 years hosted the May Coronation of the new King and Queen - a coronation event that takes place twice a year.

An original founder of the local group for reenactments and steward of Saturday’s event, Joy Walker, with Scadian name Mistress Cairistiona Inghean Raghnaill, said interest had been sparked in creating a local group after seeing a Society for Creative Anachronism demonstration in Sydney.

A steward for Saturday’s event, Ms Walker said members have particular interest areas.

Among them included Viking, Tudor and middle eastern ancient history ages where group members get the chance to relive those times.

Using Scadian names, new royals King Alain Quartier and Queen Safiya won a crown tournament in Brisbane for the right to ‘reign’ for six months.

‘Retiring’ royals were Count Leofric Willoughby de Broke and Sabine du Bourbonnais with all royals who hailed from Brisbane.

“It’s a lot of fun and we have ages here today from a sixth month old baby to those in their 70s,” she said.

Ms Walker said she loved studying history throughout her school years.

“Three generations of my family are here and it’s not unusual for children to be born into families and take on the interest of their parents.”

“There’s something for everyone and some people have learned the languages including Latin.”

With Beechworth selected as a different location for the event which is often hosted in Albury or Wodonga, Ms Walker said people had been attracted to activities from other groups based in Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Newcastle and Sydney with many from Brisbane.

The SCA is an inclusive non-profit volunteer educational international organisation that pursues research and re-creation of pre-seventeenth century skills, arts, combat and culture through events and other activities.

Wodonga hospital launches new prostate cancer program ALBURY Wodonga Health, in partnership with GenesisCare, has become the first regional hospital, and only the second public hospital in Victoria, to offer a rectal spacer program to prostate cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.

The launch of the rectal spacer program has been facilitated by a $300,000 grant from the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund.

This included a $256,500 donation made by an anonymous Rutherglen couple, and $50,000 from the Murray Valley Centre.

In addition to the rectal spacer program, the grant has enabled the purchase of a new ultrasound machine and biopsy equipment to better diagnose and treat prostate cancer.

GenesisCare Foundation is also supporting compassionate access for patients by providing the rectal spacing agent, Barrigel, free of charge to suitable public patients.

The Barrigel is already funded by most health funds in the private sector.

The first patient underwent the procedure at Wodonga Hospital in mid-April.

Urologist, Dr Jonathan Lewin, said until now the rectal spacer was previously only available through the private sector in Albury Wodonga, as well as compassionate access for uninsured patients in Melbourne.

“Previously, public patients would have to travel to Melbourne for the rectal spacing procedure

“We have between 80 and 100 prostate cancer patients a year who undergo radiotherapy, so this will bring huge benefits for our region in terms of being able to provide this rectal spacer procedure locally.”

The rectal spacer procedure involves the use of a hyaluronic acid spacing agent called Barrigel.

Barrigel is injected through a needle into the space between the

prostate and the rectum to temporarily separate the two organs.

This reduces the dose of radiation to the rectum and thereby reduces the risk of bowel side effects such as diarrhoea or bleeding.

As Barrigel is a soft gel, a patient will often not feel anything differently after the procedure and can go about their normal daily activities.

Barrigel will remain stable for nine months and will slowly breakdown and clear from the body completely over time leaving no longterm effects.

Rutherglen the home of busking this weekend THE historic Main Street of Rutherglen in North East Victoria is gearing up to put on its best face, as it prepares to welcome buskers and visitors alike to its first ever heat of the Australian National Busking Championships (ANBC).

The ANBC is a national event that started in Cooma NSW in 2012 and has now grown to include eight towns in Queensland, NSW, ACT and Victoria.

The winners from each of the regional finals become eligible to participate in the November National Championships in Cooma.

Damien Adams, chair of Destination Rutherglen said the ANBC is a fabulous new event for Rutherglen and the broader North East.

“We have a large number of very talented performers and musicians in the region and we’re hoping that the substantial prize money of over $10,000 will entice many to enter,” he said.

“Busking categories will include primary students, secondary students, Best Band, Open Category and a People’s Choice award.

“As an example, the winner of the Open Category will receive $3000 in prizemoney which is certainly an amazing incentive to get involved. “ We’re receiving new entries every day but we are still encouraging all performers

to enter as it’s a classic case of ‘You’ve got to be in it to win it’.

“Winners of each of the categories will then go on to represent Rutherglen at the National Championships in Cooma in November.”

The Rutherglen Busking Weekend will commence tonight with a much anticipated concert by The Northern Folk at the Rutherglen Memorial Hall.

Tomorrow morning will see Rutherglen’s Main Street come alive as buskers and performers from far and wide battle it out for the coveted prizemoney.

The Main Street will be closed to traffic on Saturday so visitors will be free to amble along at their leisure and soak up the ambience and entertainment.

“There will 13 busking stations positioned along the Main Street with buskers playing two to three sets across the day,” Mr Adams.

“Roaming judges will score the performances to provide a short list of the best buskers in each category who will be invited to appear in a Finals Concert later in the day at The Star Hotel.

“The event includes the People’s Choice Award with the public voting for their favourite buskers via $1 busker tokens that can be purchased on the day.”

LILI Donaldson was born in Deniliquin and grew up in Beechworth and Wooragee.

After a recent move to Chiltern, she has had a wonderful six months living in the town at her cousin’s house.

What’s your job?

Currently, I have three jobs (in three different states) and studying a Bachelor of Environmental Science full-time at Charles Sturt University (CSU).

It may seem a bit ridiculous, but I find it hard to sit still!

On top of my own gardening business, I work for a South Australian not-for-profit environmental organisation called Trees For Life, and i’m contracted as a sustainability adviser at CSU’s Albury-Wodonga campus.

What brought you to this role?

After I finished high school, I travelled and lived overseas where I was subjected to a plethora of environmental issues I wasn’t even aware existed.

In 2019, I began my studies in South Australia and was immediately fascinated by the natural world, how it functions, and what needs to be done to improve the current environmental crises.

What do you love about your job?

I love that this field is so broad, yet everyone involved is working towards a common goal, to help better the planet for all current and future generations alike.

It brings communities together and creates much-needed awareness around important environmental issues.

What do you do in the community?

Having only recently moved back, I’m looking to get stuck into volunteering with a local Landcare group and will soon join a CFA team again.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

Waste management is a huge one for me, but having grown up on a property surrounded by bush, fire risk reduction has and always will be the most important issue, as it can have devastating impacts on a community in mere minutes.

Chiltern What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

Undertake cooler and more frequent burns through places like the Chiltern National Park and surrounds, which are sitting like ticking time bombs given their current fuel loads.

I also think the need for constant education around fire safety is imperative in our community, as many new families continue to settle in the region.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

I can’t go past the current climate crisis, forewarned to us by scientists some 60 years ago.

I’m upset to think that for so long it hasn’t been seen as an ‘issue’, because it didn’t show its destructive results in plain sight.

I can only hope that the global community comes together soon to create a collective effort of positive and permanent environmental change towards a more sustainable future for all.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

I would have loved the chance to meet my ‘Opa’ from Germany.

I feel that he would have simply adored this gorgeous region, especially our beautiful nature landscapes like the gorge or mountain ranges.

Why would you show him that?

He was a brilliant artist and, and based on his previous work, I think his depiction of our local environment would have been absolutely stunning.

What book are you reading?

Apart from the never-ending pile of textbooks, I am thoroughly enjoying my current read, ‘Soil’ by Matthew Evans - the incredible story of what keeps earth, and us, healthy.

Marshall holds lead in women’s club championship TODAY was the third round of the Beechworth Golf Club’s women’s club championships.

Another beautiful day greeted the golfers.

Nada Guyatt continued her good form to win the day with 98/30/68, Deb Tully was runner up with 96/25/71.

Nearest the pins went to Anne Geddis, Pam Nankervis and Gail Smith.

After three rounds of the championships the leaders are (taking best two of three scores): A Grade: Glenda Marshall 181, Gail Smith 187, Deb Tully 195, Coral Ward 196.

This coming Sunday will be Stroke for the May Monthly Medal - 11:30am for 12noon hit off.

A QUARTET of Wangaratta lawn bowlers enjoyed a stellar weekend at the Victoria State Championships over the weekend.

Jodie Fruend picked up gold in the women’s singles, downing Karen Brennan of Wimmera at the Bendigo East Bowling Club, while son Ethan Fruend and Adrian Pantling came out on top in the men’s pairs.

Ian Brimblecombe and Anne Mills also took home a gold medal in the mixed pairs and Brimblecombe was the runner-up in the men’s singles.

Jodie ran away a 25-15 winner,

taking the title home to the Ovens and Murray Bowls Region in a dominant display.

“I was saying to Ethan this morning it’s probably only just sinking in,” Fruend said.

“I was in disbelief for the first 48 hours I think.

“To be honest it was my husband who prompted me to enter the state singles.

“I’m not very fond of singles so it was all a bit of a surprise.”

Although Fruend ended up an easy victor, she was 1-8 down to start the final.

“I was 8-1 down so I had to work my way back a bit,” she said.

“I just tried not to put too much pressure on myself, slowed things down a bit and tried to calm myself down and I slowly got back into it.

“I would have been happy with a silver medal so just to get to the final was pretty amazing.”

Ethan and Pantling played a thriller against Eastern Ranges Ryan Drummond and Zac Woning with the match going to an extra end after scores were locked up at 17-all.

But it was the Ovens and Murray pair who took the final out 20 shots to 17.

“I’m not a good stage mum,” Fruend said.

“I play every bowl in my head, it’s worse to watch than play I think - I was really nervous.

“They both played out of this world and did all week so it was great to see them win in an extra end.

“Ian Brimblecombe did well in his events too, he was almost player of the week so it was good to have those familiar faces around.”

The Ovens and Murray Bowls Region won the shield for the most successful team throughout the championships.

The foursome will now travel to Gold Coast in October for the national championships.
