Local arts council to be revitalised POWER, PERFORMANCE, AND RELIABILITY

Beechworth Arts Council (BAC) is seeking keen people to step into vital roles needed for the longtime organisation to keep running.

An integral part of the greater regional arts community, BAC has been committed to strong arts advocacy and creating an arts legacy into the future for more than four decades.

A meeting for members and interested people from the community to take on roles is being held on Thursday, 17 July at the Hibernian Hotel in the back room at 6:30pm for a meal, or 7pm for the meeting.

has been with the organisation since it first kicked off in October 1980, said support at this meeting is critical for BAC’s ongoing operation.

Christmas in July fundraiser for Golden Horseshoes Festival

By CORAL COOKSLEY Community spirit is set to be high with a first-time Christmas in July fundraiser for the much-loved Golden Horseshoes Festival (GHSF) at Beechworth’s Hotel Nicholas in two weeks’ time.

Eventgoers can tap their feet away to the sound of music by local DJ legend Lex Fletcher with his tunes and grooves with a little Christmas tone while tucking into a scrumptious two course Christmas dinner

with all the trimmings.

Lex will also host some fun trivia destined for lots of laughs.

GHSF committee member Sonja Northridge said local businesses had generously supported the event donating prizes including ones for a “Silent Night” auction as well as lucky door prizes, trivia and competitions.

“We wanted to do a different event for a fundraiser and highlights those supporting the festival and is good for the town,” she said.

She said the Golden Horseshoes Festival, running since the 1960s, is held over the four-day Easter long weekend and is a fun event as well as a boost to the local economy One of the biggest annual events in the region, as well as on the Beechworth calendar, the volunteer run festival for all the family draws around 15,000 people to town.

captured one-word grabs for what the festival meant to them.

Among words had been “exceptional, friendly, awesome, lively and multicultural”.

Others but not least, were “vibrant, energetic, community, fun and exciting”.

Sonja said the GHSF committee is always on the hunt for volunteers too.

GHSF committee member Jo Voigt said the new fundraiser will help to keep the momentum going in the

lead-up to the next festival.

Lisa said the fundraiser maintains energy, passion and community support.

More than 50 tickets have been sold already with limited seating capacity.

“Every dollar raised goes back into the festival,” Lisa said.

“We rely on donations and not every business can donate but it’s great to have their support.”

The trio said the GHSF committee of eight hope the Christmas in July fundraiser

will become an annual event.

Sonja said it’s a great event for a mid-year Christmas party for businesses, sports groups and other organisations.

“We’re looking forward to having a great night in the pub,” Lisa said while Jo added “it’s getting people out in winter and having fun too”.

Seasonal firefighters wanted to help protect Victorian communities this fire season Applications are now open for seasonal firefighter roles across Victoria.

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) is employing 500 seasonal firefighters prior to the summer bushfire season.

FFMVic chief fire officer, Chris Hardman, said seasonal firefighters boost Victoria’s firefighting capacity in the lead-up to summer and during the peak fire season.

“New recruits will train and work alongside our permanent firefighting staff, re-

sponding to bushfires rapidly to keep communities safe this summer,” he said.

“They will be part of a team of close to 1800 frontline personnel and 1200 accredited incident management staff this bushfire season.”

Last year FFMVic firefighters responded to more than 1265 bushfires across the state, and delivered priority planned burns which will help reduce the impact of bushfires this summer.

“Emergency response deployments can occur any-

where across the state, providing opportunities to travel and work in different locations,” Mr Hardman said.

“In previous seasons, some recruits have also been deployed to support firefighting efforts across Australia and internationally.”

Hume Region deputy chief fire officer, Aaron Kennedy, said seasonal firefighter roles provide rewarding career opportunities for those with a passion for the outdoors, learning new skills and making a difference.

“In addition to responding to bushfires and helping to deliver planned burns, new recruits will also undertake pest and weed control works, and maintain recreational reserves, strategic fire breaks and forest roads,” he said.

“They can also be called on to support other emergencies such as major floods, storms and biosecurity incidents.

“Many of the firefighters deployed to the current Canadian bushfires started their careers as project firefighters.”

Applications are now open for seasonal firefighter roles across 12 locations in the north east including Alexandra, Marysville, Toolangi, Broadford, Benalla, Mansfield, Beechworth, Bright, Ovens, Corryong, Eskdale and Tallangatta.

Applications close 27 July and employment occurs between October and May, with some variations depending on seasonal requirements.

“The market at its height featured over 100 arts and craft stalls, attracting thousands of visitors to Beechworth,” she said.

BAC in partnership with La Trobe University throughout the 1990s also leased three buildings to create an Arts precinct.

“It offered exhibition, workshop and studio space at Mayday Hills and hosted an ambitious program of concerts, exhibitions and creative workshops, along with an artist in residence program and an annual film festival held at the Bijou Theatre,” Ms Dormer said.

BAC also began the first local spoken and written word festival (Writers, Readers and Poets), an event that featured writing workshops along with author talks with celebrated writers in the next decade from 2000.

“A decade later BAC produced a series of popular Spring Arts Festivals showcasing local visual artists along with musicians, authors and poets,” Ms Dormer said.

Ms Dormer also said a visual memory of the Beechworth community through a photography project called the Beechworth Family Album has spanned four decades beginning in 1984.

Engaging a professional photographer to chronicle people, places and activities of Beechworth, the 5th Chapter of the Beechworth Family Album was held last month.

Since its beginning BAC has been instrumental in bringing the arts in its many forms to the Beechworth community with events celebrating local identities such as Ada Cambridge and David Martin along with significant contributors to Beechworth’s contemporary business and community life.

“The arts council was the instigator of the now iconic Beech-

worth Tapestry on show in the Beechworth Town Hall that was painstakingly woven by key members of the then Victoria Tapestry Workshop to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Victoria and the Bicentennial in 1988,” Ms Dormer said.

“Hanging in the historic Beechworth Town Hall, the tapestry is a popular feature of the town’s historic precinct and widely acknowledged as an important

chronicle of Beechworth’s colonial past.

“With the aim of fostering a community of local artisans and artists, since its inception BAC has offered countless workshops in life drawing, printmaking, textiles and painting.

“Many participants of the workshops have gone on to establish their own arts practice and build a loyal audience of patrons.”

Winterwords Festival spices up for August

By CORAL COOKSLEY Award-winning rock cabaret writer-performer Geraldine Quinn, also known for her appearances on Spicks and Specks and The Weekly with Charlie Pickering, will be one of two guests headlining this year’s Winterwords Festival.

The festival being held between Wednesday 20 and Sunday, 24 August has a fabulous program of both guest authors and presenters including local talent.

Eventgoers will be in for a treat when Ms Quinn performs her renowned cabaret show ‘The Passion of Saint Nicholas’ on Saturday, 23 August at 7:30pm at the Beechworth Soldiers’ Memorial Hall.

Ms Quinn will run a workshop the following morning after her show at 11am ‘Adapting a True Story’ to explore the challenges of writing about real events and people.

Also headlining the exciting event will be legendary figure in the Australian poetry scene TT.O. (Pi O).

Born in Greece, the poet was brought up in Fitzroy and is a chronicler of Melbourne, its culture and migrations.

With his partner Sandy Caldow, the pair will deliver a poetry-visual art and poetry reading performance.

Ms Caldow writes poetry and makes art about empathy, ecology, community and place.

Winterwords president and creative director Janet Tweedie said among guest authors this year will be Sydney’s Liz Foster (The Good Woman’s Guide to Making Better Choices), Troy Hunter (Gus and the Missing Boy, Gus and the Burning Stones), and Bright’s Siobhan O’Brien (All the Golden Light).

“Troy will be chatting with Margaret Hickey in a Crimewords session about her new book ‘An Ill Wind’ published on 1 July this year and I will be talking to Liz and Siobhan,” she said.

Associate CSU professor Jenni Munday and a member of the Charles Sturt University Creative Practice Circle known for her creative works in the Visual and Performing Arts for many years will undertake a session on writing and

performing monologues.

Two poets also from the Circle, local Frank Prem and CSU adjunct researcher Roxanne Bodsworth, will run a workshop together with Roxanne presenting one on feminist reconstruction of mythical tales too.

Festivalgoers can also tune in to

a singing workshop run by Beechworth musician Leanne Murphy followed by a performance with members of the SongShed community singing group.

Ms Tweedie said Mr Prem will also facilitate a ‘writers and poets’ breakfast at Beechworth Bakery, Valerie Crosse will run a Yoga workshop while Valerie will also present an ‘Artchat’ with Beechworth’s Darren Pope.

“We will also have our Artwords exhibition, Beechworth Theatre Company will present a rehearsed reading of a newly written script and Roger Timewell will facilitate another Philosophywords session,” she said.

“Beechworth Books will hold an Open Night after our official opening on Friday, 22 August too.”

A Winternudes art exhibition will also be presented by the Beechworth Life Drawing Group run by Kate O’Toole.

The festival run by the Winterwords Autonomous Collective committee – a small band of dedicated volunteers – the Collective received a government grant from Regional Arts Victoria of $4160 to help present Geraldine Quinn’s show and workshop.

The community focused and financially accessible event in its fifth year is a festival of word celebration in every shape and form covering art, drama, discussion, music, poetry, prose and storytelling.

Ms Tweedie said the event is loved by many people and is an opportunity to head out in winter and have some fun.

“It’s also a chance to see and hear and experienced writers, entertainers, poets and performers or whoever they may be without people needing to leave town to see them,” she said.

“It’s an event for the community by the community and I’m really happy many locals are involved again this year.”

Beechworth early years services reach joint proposal for Mayday Hills site Beechworth Community Early Years Learning Centre (BCEYLC) and Beechworth Kindergarten (BK) have reached a joint proposal for the future of the Mayday Hills early years facility, following the withdrawal of Alpine Children’s Services from the Indigo Shire Council led Expression of Interest (EOI) process.

The two community-run services came together for a full-day mediation on Sunday, 22 June, facilitated independently, to determine the best possible shared use of the site that would allow both to continue operating and meet growing local demand.

The proposal - submitted jointly to Indigo Shire Council - recommends that both services remain in their current rooms within the

building, the outdoor yard be redivided based on current licensed places (57 places for BCEYLC, 30 for BK), allowing BCEYLC to proceed with a long-planned demountable classroom extension, internal shared spaces be formally allocated, separate leases entered into with both services, and a “first option” clause be included, enabling either service to take over the full site if the other vacates.

Council deferred a lease decision at its June meeting to allow for the outcome of mediation to be considered.

BCEYLC has since met with council representatives to call for urgent implementation of the proposal, citing the impact of ongoing uncertainty on staff, families, and service planning.

“We’re proud to have worked constructively with Beechworth Kindergarten to find a shared path forward.

“With council’s support, we can now focus on expanding access to care and planning confidently for 2026 and beyond,” she said.

Budget challenges with unpaid rates

By CORAL COOKSLEY OUTSTANDING rates owed to Indigo Shire Council have more than doubled over the last four years creating occasional budget challenges.

Council’s CEO Trevore Ierino said the figure has crept to around $4 million up by $2.5 million from an earlier tally of $1.5 million four years ago owed from rate payers across the board.

The amount began to accrue when in the middle of COVID-19 the state government requested councils not to chase outstanding debtors for at least two years due to various impacts on people such as job losses.

Mr Ierino said usually a normal process is undertaken including reminders escalating through to debt recovery processes if necessary.

“We work with everyone who has difficulty paying where arrangements can be made for payment,” he said.

Mr Ierino said some ratepayers do not make contact with council with debts continuing to increase.

“Restrictions on payment follow up has been recently lifted and we’re back to normal for debt recovery,” he said.

“We encourage people to get their rates back up to date because of penalty interest on outstanding rates.

“Over time when rates build up its also harder and challenging for some to pay their rates in any given year.

“There are options to pay by instalments or have a repayment plan and people need to contact us to make those arrangements.”

Mr Ierino said council is reluctant to undertake normal collection procedures but people need to get in touch if payment plans are needed.

The chief executive said unpaid rates are not considered bad debts in the long term as legislation requires payment one way or another such as a house can’t be sold until the debt is cleared.

In the short-term failure to pay rates impedes cash flow with shortfalls in an established budget based on expected rate income.

Mr Ierino said council does at times goes into an overdraft situation to cover the shortfall but it doesn’t happen too often.

“We usually get back to a situation where there’s a small surplus at the end of the year, but sometimes during the year, when the reserves are low, we can go into overdraft.

It’s temporary situation as the instalment notice is staggered on very specific dates - September, November, February and May. For example, in a heavy capital program during the summer months a lot of money may have been spent while waiting for main instalment money to come in.

“We have been in the position at the end of each year in being back to the positive with a small buffer in the but each year the buffer is getting lower,” Mr Ierino said.

“I don’t have concerns that this will necessarily continue to grow.

“We do like to have $3 million to $4 million at the end of the year for a buffer so we’re not going into overdraft.

Income is derived from many sources with around $20 million received from rates.

As an example for the last couple of years with debt growth of around $500,000 or $600,000 a year, council has received around $19 million instead of $20 million from rates income.

Phillip Nickson Phillip Nickson was born in Sydney and grew up in Chipping Norton about 25 kilometres west of the city with its country feel.

“We had around seven acres of land on which we kept horses, a cow and poultry and our dogs and cats,” he said.

“With my wife and children, I have lived in Rutherglen for more than 30 years.”

What did you do workwise?

I retired in 2017 after earlier working in the grain Industry and for the second half of my working life at Uncle Tobys in Wahgunyah.

My grain work mainly involved post-harvest grain and grain storage husbandry, while Uncle Tobys saw me working in product quality and processing, grain quality as well as procurement and manufacturing facility hygiene.

What brought you to your role/ career?

Growing up in Chipping Norton gave me an interest in agriculture which was further nurtured when I attended Hurlstone Agricultural High School located in Glenfield.

After high school I attended Hawkesbury Agricultural College.

This together with my experiences growing up, sparked my interest in agriculture.

My first job after college was in the wheat industry with the then called Australian Wheat Board followed by roles in the grain storage industry, latterly with the Grain Elevators Board in Victoria.

It was with this organisation that my wife and I came to live in Rutherglen.

What did you love about your work?

The necessity to innovate and seek alternative solutions enabled me to put my technical training and education into practice in many ways throughout my career from grain storage and management requirements to meeting food and hygiene standards in the food processing industry.

What do you do in the community?

I have been involved in a number of volunteer roles, particularly in Apex and in later years in Rotary. My main motivations have been to learn more about what is happening in the local community and to try to improve life for community members primarily locally and where possible, nationally and internationally.

Is there an important community issue that you think needs addressing?

Volunteering, or the lack of it, is a major concern to me and volunteer organisations with which I’m associated.

What would you do to solve change, improve that situation?

In Rotary, as with other volunteer groups, we try to focus on providing the opportunity for more people to participate in our activities. We need to help people understand that volunteering adds to a person’s life and does not restrict it. Volunteer organisations need to facilitate such opportunities. It is incumbent upon volunteer organisations to realise that change may be a necessity if they are to be of relevance in a changing world.

What do you see as one of the most important current world issues?

Instability, both socially and economically seem to dominate the world scene.

If the person you would most

like to meet came to Indigo Shire (past or present), or was already here, who would that be, what would you show them, and why?

Former Justice of the High Court, Michael Kirby. He has shared his view of the world, its inequities and opportunities at a number of Rotary Club forums and I would like to be able to hear him speak and speak with him in Rutherglen.

I understand that he enjoys a glass of red wine and so it would not be difficult to select suitable locations/ venues in Rutherglen to share with Mr Kirby.

What book are you reading?

I’m reading two books – ‘Bert Hinkler, The Most Daring Man in the World.’ A story about an Australian pioneering aviator and inventor celebrated for his solo flights and innovative designs, and ‘American Journey’ by Australian journalist Don Watson. Mr Watson discusses his train travels through the USA.

New facilities for local netballers The Yackandandah Football and Netball Club is set to have a change room facility upgrade with a recent grant from the state government’s Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund (RCSIF).

The club is one of seven sports clubs across the North East with funding for new projects announced

by Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes on Monday.

Funds will go towards delivering modern, inclusive facilities for netball players, umpires and the wider community.

The project at Butson Park for the construction of a new netball changeroom facility includes a new and home and away change rooms, first aid facilities, umpires change room, additional storage and public amenities including an accessible toilet.

The upgrade had been identified as a key priority in Indigo Shire Council’s Active Indigo Recreation Strategy with council working closely with the Yackandandah Football and Netball Club community.

Club treasurer Chris Kenny said funding consisted of the $1 million government grant, $225,000 from Indigo Shire Council and the club chipped in $49,000.

He said the project had been a work in progress for five years with facilities well overdue for an upgrade.

“The club has about 540 members and we did a lot of fundraising in the 23/24 season,” he said.

“The upgrade will provide

a platform with good facilities for events.

“Hopefully the project will start at the end of the season and be ready for the next one – that’s our hopeful timeline.

“We would also like to acknowledge the support of Indigo Shire Council in getting the grant.

Volunteering by young people on the rise

By CORAL COOKSLEY Chiltern’s Bill Hotson was delighted to be a guest speaker on the town’s history to a young interstate volunteer group on Sunday at the Chiltern Primary School.

A cohort of student volunteers from a Sydney university had pulled up their sleeves to help tackle local projects on Monday after their coach rolled into Chiltern on Sunday afternoon.

The trip marked the 15year anniversary for The Big Lift (TBL) from University of Technology Sydney (UTS) on a mission of spreading a volunteering movement across Australia.

With the second stop at Chiltern on the winter trip through nine regional communities on the way to Melbourne, the crew of around 40 helped Chiltern Primary School staff and volunteers with general maintenance and gardening.

The group also helped the Chiltern Lions Club members restore the path around Lake Anderson.

Lions’ member Paul Schirmer said the club was delighted to support their offer.

“Lions is all about volunteering and it’s something we try and foster,” he said.

“They are a great bunch of young people and have restored my faith in young people volunteering.

“They also showed great leadership and will have success in any career they choose.”

Mr Hotson said among topics he spoke about were Chiltern’s early history, its First Nations Dhudhuroa people and the gold rush days.

He also discussed the town’s challenges going from a population of around 10,000 to 20,000 people in

Mr Hotson showed his paintings depicting Chiltern’s history and landscape and talked about notable people in the area as well as the connection to infamous people such as bushranger Ned Kelly.

“It was great to see the volunteers chatting away,” he said.

Founded in 2010 with the philosophy of “Paying it Forward”, TBL is a student run, volunteer organisation.

Eighty students are taken on a nine-day bus trip through regional NSW and Victoria giving back to communities through various volunteering projects, among them painting, gardening, cleaning and general maintenance.

TBL’s aim is to also create a greater connection between city students and regional communities learning from the history, values and town spirt - the backbone of country towns.

TBL vice-president Connor Terry said the plan is to make positive impacts on students and communities

alike through volunteering efforts while fostering a shared sense of purpose among university students.

TBL organiser for Chiltern, Anunaya Rai, said The Big Lift embodied connection.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Historic and modern an appealing mix I refer to the letter of Geoffrey Palmer in your paper on 4 July 2025.

I notice that the offending water bubbler has now been removed.

What a shame. It was a modern, functional and artistic piece.

There is an historic bubbler across the road which doesn’t look as if it is used or is useable.

I find the juxtaposition of the new and old in Beechworth something to admire.

We are so lucky to have beautiful historic buildings while also having the practicality and functionality of modern life.

I hope Mr Palmer is not suggesting that we do away with paved roads, motor cars and electricity as I am sure that the tourists and residents would not find that appealing.

Mr Palmer also criticises the new signs in the Historic Precinct that he finds “abjectly unsuitable” and crude.

The signs, however, are easy to see and read for tourists seeking information and due to modern technology, will be weather proof.

It is not necessary to do away with modern convenience in order to appreciate and respect our cultural and built heritage.

The juxtaposition enables us to see the qualities of a particular thing more clearly by comparing it to something else.

I hope that Mr Palmer is as knowledgeable and finicky about our Indigenous history, with Victoria’s colonisation being one of the most brutal chapters in Australia’s history.

The white washed version of our history obliterated, not only the Indigenous people themselves but also their culture and achievements.

Our First Nations people are still waiting to have their voices heard and the desecration of their land and culture can not be remedied.

Telstra coverage boost on the way for Hume communities

New or improved Telstra mobile coverage will be delivered across a host of Hume communities as part of a $10 million local investment to help deliver the most advanced, resilient and reliable mobile network in the region.

The series of upgrades and new construction projects is being rolled out over the next 12 months, and follows Telstra’s announcement earlier this year that it would increase its national mobile network investment by $800 million over four years to deliver the connectivity needed to support customers in years to come.

Telstra regional general manager for Eastern Victoria Jenny Gray said the multi-million dollar funding would help deliver better coverage and performance in the region, now and into the future.

“We have a long history of investing in regional communities, and we know mobile connection plays such a huge role in all our lives as well as our futures, whether we’re on the road, at home or the office,” Ms Gray said.

“Data carried across our mobile network has more than tripled over the last five years.

“This investment will help us further expand our

mobile coverage and increase the capacity on our 5G network.

“Our investment includes 30 new projects to upgrade our mobile network in locations such as Wangaratta and Benalla.

“We’re also in the process of building a new site in Beechworth and scoping other opportunities to further expand our coverage.”

Telstra has begun upgrading hundreds of mobile sites at its busiest locations around the country with Ericsson’s AIR 3284, the world’s first 5G triple-band radio – a technology that boosts capacity, improves coverage and is central to building a high-performing, programmable network.

“Customers near the upgraded sites should see and feel a difference with noticeable improvements to speeds and overall experience from this year especially while using their mobile in busy areas,” Ms Gray said.

“This includes better streaming, faster uploads, and more reliable connectivity during peak times.”

Financial support for victim-survivors strengthened with permanent $5000 payment The Centre Against Violence (CAV) has welcomed the federal government’s announcement that the $5000 Escaping Violence Payment will be made permanent, offering vital support for people leaving violent relationships at a time when family violence rates are sharply rising across Victoria.

According to the latest Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) data released this month, family violence incidents in Victoria increased by 10.7 per cent over the past 12 months, with 106,247 incidents recorded statewide.

Regional communities served by CAV continue to experience higher rates: • Benalla up 21.1 per cent, 87 per cent above the state average rate.

• Wangaratta up 16.9 per cent, 60 per cent above the state average.

• Wodonga up 3.7 per cent, 61per cent above the state average.

CAV chief executive officer Jaime Chubb said while the figures highlight serious challenges, they also show that more people may be finding the courage to seek help and knowing

where to go.

“Every one of these incidents represents a person or family making an incredibly difficult choice to speak up,” she said.

“We know these statistics only reflect what is reported to police, and so many people are still suffering in silence behind closed doors.

“Too often, people return to an abusive partner simply because they cannot afford to leave.

“That’s why financial support like this payment is so important.

“It gives people the freedom to make safer choices for themselves and their children.”

CAV staff can support clients to apply for the Escaping Violence Payment, which usually provides up to $1500 in cash paid directly into a person’s bank account.

This is typically used for fuel, rent or urgent bills, plus $3500 in goods and services of their choice, such as groceries, clothing, white goods, or essential items for children, especially for those who have had to leave everything behind.

“We are incredibly grateful to see this payment

made permanent,” Jaime said.

“It gives people dignity, practical options, and the real possibility of building a new, safer life.”

CAV also reminds the community that 10 days of paid family and domestic violence leave is now available to all employees in Australia by law, supporting victim-survivors to plan, move, attend court, or see support services without risking income or employment.

“If you are thinking about leaving, please know you do not have to do it alone,” Jaime urged.

“Don’t wait until it’s too late.

“Our team is here to help you understand your options, access this payment and paid leave, and work with you to build a safe plan forward.”

Haines meets with local NDIS providers over controversial pricing changes Independent Federal Member for Indi, Dr Helen Haines is calling on the Federal Government to pause NDIS pricing changes and undertake regional consultation, following a meeting with allied health providers last week.

Dr Haines met with NDIS providers – including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians, speech pathologists and support coordinators – who expressed serious concerns about controversial changes to NDIS pricing, which came into effect on 1 July 2025.

The changes, which include a freeze or reduction in price caps and travel costs, could make it unviable for providers to continue delivering services in areas which Dr Haines says are already stretched.

“Multiple providers in Indi are concerned that recent pricing changes for travel will have a particular impact on regional and rural communities,” Dr Haines said.

ment was taking a cookie-cutter approach to pricing that failed to reflect the reality of delivering services in regional areas.

“It appears these changes apply the same rules for travel to both metropolitan and regional areas – when we know that service availability is not the same.

“I heard from one of the two pediatric dieticians in the region who is worried these changes may mean children on PEG feeding miss out on feeds or assessments because she can no longer afford to travel to them. This is completely unacceptable.”

In addition to the travel pricing changes, Dr Haines

heard from providers - particularly, support coordinators - that a price cap on top of a 5-year pricing freeze may force their closure if they cannot keep up with operational costs like wages, rent, compliance and insurance.

Dr Haines said any closure of support coordinators will have negative knock-on effects for the specialised services that require coordination of complex services.

Prior to the changes coming into effect, Dr Haines wrote to the Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Senator Jenny McAllister, about her concerns over the pricing changes and requested a meeting to discuss the issues.

In that letter, Dr Haines urged the government to pause the commencement of the pricing changes and undertake consultation with NDIS providers.

Dr Haines said she would push for changes when Federal Parliament resumes on 22 July.

Inaugural $50,000 Tim Fischer Fellowship announced The search is on across the nation for the first recipient of the inaugural Tim Fischer Fellowship, as the Country Education Foundation of Australia (CEF) today announced a $50,000 annual funding grant for an Australian who has the passion, skills and career prospects to create real change in regional and rural communities.

As one of our nation’s most respected former politicians and a champion of the bush, the fellowship recognises the former Deputy Prime Minister’s spirit, for it was Tim Fischer’s honesty, integrity and selflessness that guided his own early education, before serving his country in the Vietnam War, and later public roles that saw him rise to prominence not just in the halls of Parliament House but to the holy cobble stones of the Vatican in Rome.

Open to anyone over 18 years, the fellowship is targeting people with dedication and potential to be curious, to explore new ideas and insights, and to put these ideas into practice - talented changemakers who are focused on the impact they can make over the course of a year outside of the big cities.

Chief executive officer of CEF Wendy Mason said the funding may be applied towards professional development, research activities, travel related to the fellowship purpose, accommodation, or other agreed-upon expenses.

One recipient will be selected each year and receive funding of up to $50,000.

school in Boree Creek and then in Melbourne.

Mr Fischer never forgot his roots in regional Australia and the future generations from the land who would one day follow his leadership.

“Tim was our first patron, whose deep-rooted values aligned with our mission to promote and enable equal access to further education and career opportunities for rural and regional youth across Australia,” Ms Mason said.

“Through its work, the CEF sees productive, educated minds blossom each year in people who may not have had this growth opportunity in their life.

“This fellowship is about finding a new offshoot to add to the productivity and impact of the foundation in a meaningful way.”

By DYLAN POOL On Sunday a small but quality field of six players fronted up for a Stableford round in what was threatening conditions.

After some light drizzle on the first few holes the rain cleared and conditions were pretty good.

Rod Shaw (21) blitzed the field with 38 points, his next closest competitor was George Ward (21) four shots behind with 34 points.

Next who followed were Dylan Pool (1) 32, Dave Clark (13) 30, Jacob Howard (9) 29 and Andy Croome (12) 28.

Rod claimed the only nearest the pin on the 10th.

There were also two first round matches played in the Handicap Matchplay.

Jacob Howard defeated Andy Croome three and two and Dylan Pool was made to go all the way against Dave Clark winning two up.

Last Wednesday a versus par event was played.

Hollie Goodwin won the day with -2, Marije Van Epenhuijsen was runner up with -4.

Glenda Marshall was next with -5.

The Weekly 9 hole competition for Autumn/Winter has now come to an end.

There were 22 players who competed over the 10 weeks.

Overall Competition results.

Women’s winner was Andrea Voogt with 21.4 points.

Runners up were Dee Cordy and Michelle Spicer with 18.8 points.

Men’s winner was Dylan Pool with17.6 points, runner up was Peter Vasey with 17.4 points.

In the teams event the winners were the Matildas (Andrea Voogt, Kylli Vasey and Rod Shaw) with 374 points.

Runners up were the Dolphins (Trish Croome, Dee Cordy and Dylan Pool) with 359pts.

Third were the Diamonds (Zoe Gephart, Di Goldsworthy and Peter Vasey) with 347 pts.

An enjoyable dinner and presentations at the Hibernian Hotel on Sunday night completed this competition.

Those playing in the Par 3 it starts this week, round 1.

There will be six rounds played over 12 weeks so you have a fortnight to get your round played.

There is a $50 comp fee, pay into the club account with your name and Par3 on payment.

The handicap look up sheets are up on the clubhouse window.

Par 3 cards are in the black box.

Local netball club gets much needed funding The 2025 Woolworths Netball Grants winners have been announced, with Rutherglen Football Netball Club one of the select local clubs across Australia winning a $2000 grant.

The Rutherglen NetSetGo program has expanded significantly in recent years and now includes 37 young girls from surrounding communities like Springhurst, Wahgunyah, and Corowa.

What started as a modest program has evolved into a thriving hub of activity, friendship, and teamwork - supported by a dedicated group of 10 parent volunteers, including three volunteer coaches.

This year, the Rutherglen U10s have been invited to join a formal weekly netball competition in Wangaratta, competing against larger, better-resourced clubs.

The team has never had their own “official” uniforms due to funding constraints.

The Woolworths Netball Grant will be used to help purchase proper netball dresses for the team, giving the girls a greater sense of pride, belonging, and club identity.

Like many rural communities, Rutherglen has weathered its share of challenges - years of drought through the 2010s, the 2020 bushfires, and flooding in 2022 that completely submerged the town’s only netball court.

Despite these setbacks, the club remains a vital community anchor, bringing people together and supporting the next generation of local netballers.

Netball clubs and associations nationwide have the chance to secure a portion of $100,000 in

SCORE BIG: Rutherglen Football Netball Club has secured a $2000 grant through the 2025 Woolworths Netball Grants round. grants thanks to the return of the Woolworths Netball Grants.

The initiative is open to the many local netball clubs and associations across Australia, including those that operate a Woolworths NetSetGo centre, with an increased number of grants available this year.

Woolworths has been a supporter of grassroots netball, in partnership with Netball Australia since 2019, donating more than $1.4 million to hundreds of clubs across the country largely through the allocation of Woolworths Netball Grants.

These grants are designed to support local netball by promoting healthier eating habits and increased physical activity among young players.

As part of an ongoing commitment to grassroots communities, the funds are intended to provide netball clubs the opportunity to upgrade or provide new facilities, equipment, uniforms or services, improve access to NetSet Go or improve nutrition for members.

A key feature of the program is the return of the successful $20,000 People’s Choice Award, allocated to the club or association with the most votes.

Now in its third year, the award encourages engagement among local members and supporters, bringing a sense of unity across the netball community.

Netball remains the number one sport for women and girls in Australia, with latest AusPlay Data showing that over 315,000

children play organised netball out-of-school each year.

CEO of Netball Australia Stacey West said netball is the number one sport for women and girls and their eight-year partnership with Woolworths has made a real difference to the sport at a grassroots level.

“In 2024 we saw over 54,000 Woolworths NetSetGo registrations,” she said.

“Together, we are proud to promote healthy eating - especially for the future rising talent of Australia.”

Bushrangers take a loss but stand by their teammate Last week the Beechworth Bushrangers faced a tough match against Chiltern, taking a loss 8.6 (54) to 8.13 (61).

Players, Liam Stephens, Connor Stone, Finn Jakobsson, Campbell Fendyk, Tristan Lenaz and Dayne Carey were celebrated for their standout performances.

Hosting the Indigenous Round was an honour for the Beechworth Football & Netball Club (BFNC) as they announced on Facebook - a celebration that

holds deep significance for the community.

The BFNC honoured and acknowledged the Traditional Owners of the land on which we live, work, and play, paying their deepest respects to their Elders past, present and emerging with a smoking ceremony, playing the didgeridoo and Welcome to Country on match-day.

Both clubs wore specially designed Indigenous jumpers for the occasion.

Disappointingly, Beechworth player Tristan Lenaz was subject to racial vilification by a Chiltern player on the field.

The proud Trawllulwuy and Pairrebeenne man took a courageous stand against the racism he faced, going public with the incident.

The Chiltern player was issued a formal warning by the club and has been issued a club-imposed fourweek suspension.

The offending player has written an apology letter to Lenaz and

must undergo a mandatory cultural awareness program before being available for selection again.

On their Facebook Beechworth Football and Netball Club said the BFNC committee and wider community stand in full support of Lenaz and his family.

“We admire his courage in speaking openly about this difficult situation,” they said.

“Racism has no place in sport or in society, and we are with him every step of the way.

“Always was and always will be.”

While the Bushrangers are taking a break this week, the TDFL are playing Hume FNL in interleague, featuring a few Beechworth players in the squad.

The match will be held on 12 July at Urana Road Oval, Lavington.

Brent Lillis is coaching the TDFL team, while Myles Aalbers is coaching the Hume league team.

It will be a one-point player only competition and the game will be contested for the Peter Copley Cup.
