Walk, talk and support HUNDREDS of thousands of steps will be taken when this year’s three-day walk for suicide awareness sets off from Beechworth to Bright towards the end of this month.

Nor-for-profit Beechworth to Bridge (B2B) has an ongoing goal to crush suicide stigma, help healing and promote depression as treatable for suicide prevention Founder Lisa Cartledge said around 350 walkers with the number similar to last year are expected to take part with registrations closing at midnight next Tuesday, March 15.

In encouraging people to join in, Lisa said being super fit is not on the agenda.

“It’s a walk, talk and support event and we have a support bus that will be with us all the time so walkers can take a spell on the bus if they want a break,” she said.

wants to jump on the bus, you can jump on or off as many times as you like.”

“We have fun while working and walking towards removing the stigma that surrounds suicide and mental ill health so that we can all be reminded that “it ain’t weak to speak” and it’s okay to remember and reminisce those who we’ve loved and lost.”

Lisa said as people know someone who has been touched by suicide or mental ill health in one way of another, it is nice to know that others care, understand and they are not alone.

“It’s about being kind to each other and ourselves where you can choose to walk and talk, or you can enjoy the walk lost in your own thoughts and still be supported,” she said.

Teissel returns to council BARNAWARTHA childcare educator Emmerick Teissel has won the vote to fill the vacancy on Indigo Shire Council created by the departure of former mayor Jenny O’Connor.

Mr Teissl was born and bred in the region and has lived at Barnawartha for the last 20 years.

It’s the second time Mr Teissel has joined the council to fill a vacancy, the first time was back in 2015 following the death of Don Chambers.

He lost his seat in 2016 and the following election in 2020 he finished just behind the final candidate to be elected, Bernard Gaffney.

“I do enjoy the role, it’s a great opportunity to get out and do something for your community,” he said.

He was contacted by the Victorian Electoral Commission on Wednesday to inform him of his success although the VEC when contacted by the O&M Advertiser would not confirm the result saying it would be officially announced yesterday at around 11am.

Mr Teissl said one of his main platforms on council would be to promote the role of local community groups to encourage more volunteers to get involved.

“If we can promote the groups and show the great work they do there is a better chance of getting more volunteers involved,” he said.

“Without volunteers the smaller community groups would struggle to keep doing the wonderful role they play in the community.”

Mr Teissl said he was also excited about the opportunities that are possible for the development of the 43 acres recently acquired by council at Chiltern.

days which is just awesome,” Lisa said.

“We are so fortunate to have an army of volunteers taking care of logistics, registrations, merchandise for the community event.”

The first leg on day one from Beechworth to Everton begins at 8.30am on March 25 at the Rail Trail, Albert Road which finishes up at Everton while day two starts from the Everton Hotel

and continues to Myrtleford with day three from Myrtleford to Bright.

There’s also an option to register for the last five kilometres from Porepunkah to Bright on the last day,” Lisa said.

International Women’s Day celebrated in the shire

By CORAL COOKSLEY INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day on Tuesday with this year’s theme ‘gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow’ has been celebrated in many different ways around Indigo Shire.

Beechworth’s Debbie Tully held a mosaic scarf making day where creations inspired from colors, patterns, and textures from traditional Afghan dresses will contribute to a long scarf to honour Afghan culture.

The world-wide scarf project “Hanging by a Thread” in support for equality of Afghan women has seen 680 mosaicists from 41 countries joining the initiative so far.

“We had a great day where more than half the group had never mosaiced before,” Debbie said.

“It was very silent gathering with everyone concentrating on their designs.”

Beechworth Country Women’s Association (CWA) branch held their annual get-together to celebrate the event in the Town Hall Gardens.

CWA’s Pam Turnbull said the event celebrated across

the globe acknowledged the success of women throughout the ages.

“We’re also remembering the Ukrainian women and those who have suffered in calamities and natural disasters around our nation and the world,” CWA’s Tess Lucas said.

With the war-torn country of Ukraine, Pam said it had been heartening to see Polish women supporting other women by leaving baby and children’s clothes for refugees fleeing Ukraine on Polish railway stations.

Nine ladies from Indigo North Health’s Glenview residential aged care facility celebrated an afternoon at staff member Wendy Graham’s home in Wahgunyah.

Indigo North Health leisure and lifestyle coordinator Kerrie Thompson said the event had been part of the leisure and lifestyle activities program.

“We were met with beautiful china, pastries, slices and cakes as Wendy’s home,” she said.

“To make the occasion possible, I also had wonderful volunteers - BIll Kelly, Penny Bingham, Glenda Simmonds and Wendy who helped.”

Lake Hume Challenge returns Sunday FAMILIES are encouraged to get on their bikes for the Jayco Albury Wodonga Lake Hume Cycle Challenge this Sunday with children under 12 riding for free.

Thanks to generous support of Wodonga Council and AlburyCity, organisers of the March 13 event have been able to waive the fee for primary–school aged children to take part in the 15km Kiewa River Family Ride.

Other rides on the day will include the 80km Bethanga Beast, 65km Tangambalanga–Sandy Creek Loop and 40km Tallangatta Rail Trail Tour.

The Rotary Club of Bellbridge– Lake Hume has joined forces with the Rotary Club of Albury North to

deliver the event with a new start and finish at Ebden Reserve.

Organising committee member, Stuart Lucas, said there was a special emphasis on getting families involved this year after so many events were postponed or cancelled during the pandemic.

“We saw that COVID affect people financially, emotionally and socially with some groups and ages in the community being more affected than others,” he said.

“An event such as this where families get together with their community for a ride beside the lake and out in a beautiful countryside is going to be great for their wellbeing.

“Families and individuals will be able to relax and feel positive being part of something bigger that helps a worthy, local cause.”

Wodonga Mayor Kev Poulton said it was a great opportunity for riders of all abilities to enjoy beautiful scenery, a social gathering and a physical challenge.

“It‘s especially exciting to see an extra focus on family participation at a time when we‘re all keen to get out and about an reconnect with our community – and of course, it‘s for a fantastic cause that ultimately benefits everyone,” he said.

“So, gather your family and friends, register to join in and make a real difference to your community while have a fun,

healthy time in the great outdoors this Sunday.”

Since 2012, the Lake Hume Cycle Challenge has raised more than $180,000 for the Wellness Centre within the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre.

Rides will be largely based on the High Country Rail Trail and other country roads, including sections of gravel to interest a wider range of riders and age groups.

Mr Lucas said this change further improves safety for riders and provides and accessible opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and try something new.

What does a person’s age have to do with it?

It is good that the shire is concerned about what people think of it.

Hopefully the survey will canvas a representative cross section of all the community.

Tribute to a guardian of history

By CORAL COOKSLEY FORMER Beechworth resident the late Ian Jones will be commemorated at an inaugural memorial event ‘The Australian Identity’ being held on March 19, paying tribute to his contributions in portraying the character of Australians and his support of the Robert O’Hara Burke Museum.

Among five guest speakers will be his son Darren Jones.

At the event being held by the Friends of the Burke Museum, Darren will be speaking on Ian’s contribution to Australian film and television.

Ian (1931-2018) made a significant contribution to the Australian identity through his work in journalism, film, television and recording of Australian history, and was particularly recognised as a leading authority on the Ned Kelly story.

“Dad lived and breathed history, and he walked in the shoes of people that he studied and researched,” Darren said.

“The most important legacy that he left for Beechworth with the Ned Kelly story had been his start with interviewing people in the late 50s and 60s who had been told stories by generations of local people.

TRIBUTE: The late Ian Jones son Darren will be talking about his father’s early career at the inaugural memorial event ‘The Australian Identity’ on Saturday March 19.

“He managed to preserve those stories in written word and that would be Dad’s most important legacy to the town.”

With an interest in the Ned Kelly story from an early age and many visits to Beechworth from his 30s onwards, according to Dar-

ren, Ian did a lot of his best work after he moved to the town from Melbourne.

“He loved everything about the town and I think he spent some of the best years of his life in Beechworth where he consolidated his life’s work,” he said.

Among stories recounted

included a find of Aaron Sherritt’s hideout in the Woolshed Valley, Ned’s Kelly’s favourite rifle called ‘Betty’ that his father had acquired by sheer luck, as well as the 56-page Jerilderie letter - an incredibly important document in which the bushranger sought to justify

his actions, and which he attempted to distribute when he held up the small town of Jerilderie in 1879.

“It was a real insight into the way Ned spoke, and Dad had it preserved and donated it to the State Library,” Darren said.

Among Kelly books written by Ian had been bestsellers Ned Kelly: A Short Life, and The Fatal Friendship: Ned Kelly, Aaron Sherritt and Joe Byrne.

Always wanting to work in film and television, after writing for the Herald Sun as a journalist, Ian became a director when television arrived in the country and cut his teeth on Channel 7’s The Hit Parade for which audio was imported from America.

Shifting to Crawford Productions, Ian directed the first Homicide episode as well as creating and writing the first 12 episodes of The Sullivans - an awardwinning series following an Australian family during the World War 2 period.

Other credits from this time include Division 4, Hunter, Matlock Police, Bluey, Bluestone Boys, Solo One and The Box, as well as co-writing the screenplay for the 1970 film Ned Kelly.

Among these film and television credits, Ian wrote and produced the successful

mini-series The Last Outlaw starring Australian actors John Jarrett and Steve Bisley.

“It’s still considered to this day the most accurate audiovisual representation of the Kelly story,” Darren said.

Another huge success was Against the Wind, created by Ian and his wife Bronwyn Binns, and starring Jon English, about convict pioneers in Australia, while a film The Lighthorseman followed in 1987.

“He was one of the first people to take Australian WW1 veterans to meet the Gallipoli Turkish veterans on Anzac Cove,” said Darren, recounting Ian’s filming of the documentary Return to Anzac in 1975.

“Throughout his work he consolidated and preserved the Australian identity and culture,” he said.

Other guest speakers at Friends of the Burke major fundraiser where money raised will support the Burke Museum’s work are author and commentator Peter FitzSimons, Ian’s daughter Elizabeth Jones, Daniel Goonan and Matt Shore.

MORE than 12 Stanley artists will showcase their work an art exhibition back for the first time in five years at the village’s Memorial Hall.

The exhibition’s titled ‘Beyond the Bends’ officially opens tomorrow at 3pm.

Contributing to the exhibition since it first began, artist and coordinator for tomorrow’s event Janet Sutherland said the title depicted artists who lived beyond the Stanley ‘bends’ with their works in the display.

“The first ‘Beyond the Bends Exhibition’ was held 15 years ago in the hall which is a great venue with our last show held in 2017,” she said.

Stanley creative Bryan McKenzie said the exhibition gave local artists a chance to get together while sharing ideas.

“It’s good for locals and draws the wider community too for them to become more aware of our local art,” he said.

New seating for local community hub

By CORAL COOKSLEY VISITORS Quercus Beechworth, previously known as the Neighbourhood Centre, can relax under the shade of trees with new bench seating at the local community hub.

Skillfully crafted by Beechworth Men’s Shed, Quercus Beechworth manager Paivi Watson said the project began as additional seating had been needed in the garden for people participating in Quercus activities as well as providing seating in space for locals to unwind.

“We wanted to attract more

people in spending more time here too,” she said.

“The Men’s Shed has been very generous in making the sturdy seating for us.

Men’s Shed president Ian Smith said the project had been assisted by an Uncle Toby’s grant of around $1000 through the Australian Men’s Shed Association.

The ‘Great Grows Here’ Community Grants program launched four years ago has become a key partnership

between Uncle Toby’s Oats and the Men’s Sheds.

With the funds to help with projects such as community gardens, outdoor seating, native bird houses and community space refurbishment, Mr Smith said the local Men’s Shed had been able to assist Quercus.

“The available grant meant we could craft the needed bench seating,” he said.

“We picked it up and have been able to build two of them.

Men’s Shed member Alan Mansfield, who constructed

the benches, said it had been a rewarding project.

“The Quercus team are delighted and really appreciate the seating,” he said.

“I like using my hands and making something that’s useful.”

Locals Justine Donaldson with her 19-month-old son Augie took the advantage of the new seat when she caught up for a chat with friend Kera Burgess early this week.

“We spend a lot of time at Quercus enjoying their activities and the seating is great,” the pair said.

A Day on the Green postponed A DAY on the Green, which was to be held this Saturday at All Saints Estate in Rutherglen, has been postponed, following Midnight Oil band member Rob Hirst returning a positive test for COVID-19.

The band has had to postpone its next two gigs to allow Rob to quarantine as required

Rainfall curtails planned burns TORRENTIAL rain at the weekend has foiled burn–off plans for the North East, after forest areas were left soaked.

Chiltern Girl Guides tackle rubbish clean up

By CORAL COOKSLEY CHILTERN Girl Guide members teamed up last Friday for one of the nation’s largest community-based environmental events, Clean Up Australia Day. Officially held on March 6 every year, the two hour activity can be held any day of the year, “We did our bit during Guide time when we picked up rubbish from the Guide hall, around the bowling club, all around Lake Anderson, in Martin Park and the tourist park and back to the hall,” she said.

More than three decades old, the national event had been started by the late Ian Kiernan with co-founder Kim McKay as a community event with help from a committee of friends.

The Clean Up Day organisation works with communities, governments and businesses and helps in sustainable living solutions.

Funding needed for golf club watering system upgrade

By CORAL COOKSLEY PHIL Trimble born at Rutherglen hospital is the third generation of his family to live in Rutherglen where the 70-year-old has lived all his life.

He attended St Mary’s Primary School, then Rutherglen primary and high school and played many sports, among them cricket as well as being a level three coach.

He managed, coached and sometimes transported the whole junior cricket team to other grounds for many years with the help of his wife Mary.

Other sports included football umpiring and swimming.

Married for 50 years, the couple has two children Trav and Skye, and five grandchildren.

What’s your job?

I have been an electrical tradesman for 54 years.

I had worked for Gillman’s Electrical from when 16 years old until 1986 when I started my own business that I worked in for 22 years in Rutherglen.

I joined Watters Electrical in 2008 where I am still employed as a service technician, mainly fixing lifts and escalators, level two work in NSW as well as some programming.

What brought you to your later role?

As a small business operator there were challenging times with customer payments and I got fed up with chasing bad debts.

This led me to my current position that I really enjoy.

What do you love about your job?

The ever-changing face of electrical work and the opportunity to help the Earth through renewable energy including one not yet in Australia - wave generation.

What do you do in the community?

I am the Rutherglen Golf Club president, member and past president of our Rotary Club and secretary of

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

As president of the golf club, the upgrade of the watering system is a priority at a cost of around $250,000 with the area used by cricket club, Little Athletics and where residents walk too.

Up to 68,000 people use the park every year.

It is also a Rutherglen Safe Haven.

We plan to change the system to electric sprinklers to the jacking pump stop using town water, and which allows recycled water to be used more efficiently.

This would help Indigo Shire, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Plan-

ning (DELWP) and North East Water meet their zero emission target.

What would you do to solve, change, or improve that situation?

As most of the land belongs to DELWP with some owned

by Indigo Shire, both authorities need to work towards resolving the funding.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

Other than the incursion

by Russia, climate change.

We no longer have rain but rain events, warmer summers and I was hoping to leave the world a better place to live for my grandchildren If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

Through a Rotary Youth Exchange program, we stayed with Franc and Cecelia in Germany after having three of their children as exchange students here and we would love to show them around the North East from the Murray to the mountains.

Why would you show them that?

There are so many wonderful places to show them around the shire and beyond where there is so much to see and it’s hard to choose just one.

What book are you reading?

Cricket legend and Australian Test star Shane Warne’s “My Autobiography.”

The graceful Black Swan

THIS week’s bird is the magnificent Black Swan, which is widespread throughout much of Australia, and is present wherever there is a suitable wetland.

In some places, where the wetlands are permanent, Black Swans are sedentary, remaining throughout the year.

However, in our region where the wetlands mostly dry out for part of the year, swans are forced to disperse in search of suitable habitat.

The Bpangerang called them Gunyuk and their eggs were harvested for food.

Adult Black Swans are mostly black, except for the broad white wing tips which are visible in flight.

The bill is a deep orange-red, paler at the tip, with a distinct narrow white band towards the end.

Younger birds are much greyer in colour and have black wing tips.

Adult females are smaller than the males.

Black Swans are found throughout Australia except for far north Queensland and are more common in southern Australia.

The Black Swan has been introduced into several countries, including New Zealand, where it is now common, and is a vagrant to New Guinea.

The Black Swan is a vegetarian with its diet mostly consisting of algae and weeds, which the bird consumes by plunging its long neck into water up to 1m deep.

Occasionally birds will graze on land, but they are clumsy walkers, and during these times are susceptible to predation by dogs and foxes.

Waterbodies without Black Swans are usually too deep for the birds to access water plants or lack water plants.

They are seldom seen on wetlands that are surrounded by trees because they require 40m or more of clear water to take off.

Black Swans form isolated pairs or small colonies in shallow wetlands.

Birds pair for life, with both adults raising one brood per season.

The eggs are laid in an untidy nest made of reeds and grasses.

The nest is placed either on a small island or floated in deeper water.

The chicks are covered in grey down and can swim and feed themselves as soon as they hatch.

Black Swans make a high-pitched musical bugle-like sound with honks, most commonly when in flight.

It also croons and makes a whistling sound while nesting and breeding and may hiss aggressively if threatened.

The Black Swan flies slowly, with its neck outstretched.

It has a slow wing beat, flying at speeds of up to 80kph.

These birds are graceful both in flight and gliding along on the water.

McCurdy tables dredge support A PETITION signed by more than 100 locals could well be the catalyst to attract more funding for the Eldorado Dredge Historic Reserve.

Organised by the Eldorado Community Group and submitted by Sally Jacka, the petition was formally tabled in front of Parliament by Ovens Valley MP Tim McCurdy earlier this week.

Mr McCurdy said the

dredge had reached a state of disrepair, and urged the State Government to inject vital funding to recover the iconic site.

“It is imperative that the State Government provide the funding needed to help restore this historical site,” he said.

cal history - doing so will be an investment into tourism and the local economy.

Wangaratta Lions Club is this year‘s Charity Partner and the club is providing 22 course and turn marshals along with volunteers to cook up a storm on the barbecue.

“Lions are proud to be a partner in 2022 and our volunteers will be ensuring that all participants know where to run and are kept safe while enjoying the activity,” Wangaratta Lions Club president Michael Everard said.

“We will be on the course in a marshalling capacity from as early as 6am.”

“Soft drinks and water will be available while a coffee van will be in attendance for those requiring a caffeine fix,” Mr Everard added.

This is the first year the Lions Club has been involved with the Marathon and Fun Run, however, the club was chartered in 1956 and has been active in the Wangaratta community since.

sations or individuals with a need and Lions are always seeking a cause to support,” he said.

“Events that promote activity and exercise and bring people to our town to experience the wonderful natural assets are to be encouraged, particularly an event where there is such diversity from personal ambition by elite sports people to intergenerational participation by families and schools.

Monthly Medal goes ahead thank George THE first Monthly Medal of the 2022 season was held last Sunday.

A big thanks must go to George Ward who went out in the morning to rake the greens after yesterday’s downpour.

From all reports they were good to putt on.

Dave Lang had the round of the day to win by a four shot margin with 86-18-68 from runner up Jamie Dolny with 89-1772.

Ball winners were Aaron Haw (19) 74 and Zane Howard (20) 74.

Nearest the pins went to Simon Carracher on the 10th and Aaron Haw on the 17th.

This Sunday is a Stableford event.

Men’s Pennant Also Men’s Pennant starts on Sunday, March 20.

If you are interested in playing please let Dylan know if you haven’t already.

Pennant is a great opportunity to go play some other great local courses for only $10 which includes lunch.

Jubilee Success Congratulations must also go to Gail Smith who had the round of the day at Jubilee last Friday in their Bowl with a great

score of 37 points.

Gail also won the vets event.

The Ladies are on fire representing the club at the moment.

Friday Twilight Friday, February 15 saw Stuart McIntosh win the Men’s Section with 18 pts.

Ric Atkins was runner up with 13 pts.

Stuart also managed to snag a NTP on the 10th.

Hollie Goodwin obviously needed to play 18 prior to playing another nine at Beechworth.

She won with 20 pts.

Linda McIntosh was runner up with 18 points.

Last Friday saw some great scores.

Both Stuart Mc 22 pts and Hollie Goodwin 23 pts winners in their respective sections.

Ric Pierce was runner up in the Men’s with 17 pts and Zoe Gephart 20 pts in the Women’s section.

No NTPs this week.

Titliest, (Hollie, Linda and Rick A) has raced ahead in the team’s event with a score of 137 pts.

Next best is SRixon (Howard Brown, Maree Nankervis, Jacqui Cato and Jacqui Pierce) 110 pts. With three weeks remaining those chasing the leaders will need to get some good

scores to catch up!

Thursday Twilight There was a relatively small field of 14 players at Twilight on Thursday on the front nine.

After a week of practice and losing balls in Tasmania Steve Piddington returned to record the best score of 23 points (17+6) to win by shot from Tony Stockdale with 22 (20+2) who won the Coffee Staines - Cafe & Carvery voucher on a multiple countback from Aaron Haw 22 (18+4), Dave Atkins 22 (16+6) and Dylan Pool 22 (16+6).

No one was more happy than Josh Carr who ended up on 21 and gets an extra plus next week.

Nearest the pin went to Dylan Pool on the 3rd.

The NTP half dozen on the 5th will jackpot.

Jamie Dolny capped off a good afternoon taking out the cash with the nearest chip on the 9th and also the Flippin’fresh Seafood Wodonga voucher in the raffle.

There are only three rounds of normal twilight left plus the Ambrose on the last night on March 31 so if you have plenty of pluses in the bank make sure you come out and use them before the last round.
