Shire seeks disaster funding INDIGO Shire Council (ISC) has sought disaster emergency funding from the Victorian State Government as the clean up around the shire continues from severe flash flooding two weeks ago when Rutherglen and Chiltern bore the brunt of damage.

funding for these situations and we rely on the state and federal government for help,” ISC chief executive Trevor Ierino said.

“We have alerted the State Government, there are cer-

tain criteria we have to meet with a detailed submission for government support.

“We hope to have an answer within the next few weeks but we are dealing with emergency fixes straight away and working through priorities.”

Mr Ierino said the damage estimate is unknown at this time but it is expected that

costs will run into hundreds of thousands of dollars and could reach up to a $1 million.

“It’s not just about infrastructure with town drainage that hasn’t been able to cope, it’s more about the impact of flooding on roads and into private property as well as culverts on roads being washed away,” he said.

“For example a stretch along the Chiltern-Yackandandah Road looks like a mini-tornado has ripped through the area.

“Town drainage takes water away but some of the drainage can’t take the amount of water from severe thunderstorms and stays on the road.

Chinese New Year celebrations in Beechworth

By CORAL COOKSLEY WANGARATTA’S Kim Ling with her children nine-year-old Leonidas Hao-Yong Fidge and six-year- old Hypatia Xin-Ning Fidge celebrated Chinese New Year in Beechworth on Saturday.

The trio enjoyed a North East Multicultural Association (NEMA) hosted free event where around 50 people from across north east of Victoria joined the special occasion held in the town’s Chinese Gardens on Saturday from 11am.

“I’m from Malaysia but Chinese born and it’s a very important time for families and the community,” Ms Ling said.

“Part of the Chinese New Year celebration is the gathering of families from around the area with the community and they have been able come together in the beautiful Chinese Gardens with its cultural heritage.”

A walking tour led by Beechworth Tours’ guide Daniel Goonan explored Beechworth’s Chinese heritage where Chinese diggers had converged in the 1850s during the gold rush.

Local resident Kathryn Chivers with a pride in her own Chinese heritage as well as the role Chinese settlers had taken in Beechworth’s development, helped at the event too.

“I’m a Singaporean Chinese, like my children to be part of Chinese culture and we have a celebration at home too,” she said.

“It’s nice that NEMA has organised these activities for Chinese New Year.

“It’s good to have an event which is multicultural.”

Surprise discovery in local Landcare working bee

By CORAL COOKSLEY A SURPRISE find of an Imperial Hairstreak butterfly colony making it the fourth known in Beechworth made an interesting day at the local Landcare group’s first working bee for this year in late January.

Beechworth Urban Landcare Sustainability (BULS) member, Nicki Munro, said the butterflies had been discovered in a ‘scruffy’ little Silver Wattle.

Helping to improve the habitat, BULS volunteers took to overgrown exotic grass with whipper snippers, fixed tree guards, grubbed out woody weed seedlings that had been part of an overall spruce up of the area in the group’s ongoing care of the Glades located north of Lake Sambell’s Sandy Beach.

“Ten willing helpers put their hand up and were as busy as bees over a couple of hours,” Ms Munro said.

“The group was delighted to find most plants dug in last Spring on National Tree Day alive and healthy too.”

Ms Munro said the group could hardly find around 200 plants dug in from a 2020 project in a small problem area within The Glades where a slightly lower damp spot between the labyrinth and the large empty circle has an abundance of weedy grasses.

“The working bees will focus on more whipper snipping, general weeding and trying to find plants in the growth,” she said.

Ms Munro said The Glades is extensively used by locals and tourists and is a key attraction in town for walking and exercise.

“It’s an area particularly rich in native birds, so both nature and people benefit from the foresight of landcarers in the 1990s who had seen the potential,” Ms Munro.

BULS members as well as anyone from the community who are interested in helping out in the next working bee at The Glades are invited to join in on Sunday, February 20 from 9am to 11am.

“We’d love to see people for a chat and catch up,” she said.

Unique Latin language event rolls out in Beechworth

By CORAL COOKSLEY PERFECT weather helped showcase Beechworth to a group of Latin language lovers who gathered for a weekend of scholarship in the town.

With the event believed to be the first of its kind around the nation, local creative innovator John Weretka, said 15 participants from all over Victoria had put their hand up to attend the special occasion.

He said the unique weekend set it apart from others event types held in the town.

Called ‘Vivarium’, the event title was based on Vivarium founded in the 5th to 6th century by Roman statesman Magnus Aurelius Cassidoras Senator (c.485- c.585) known as Cassiodorus who had retired and formed a school and

monastery at his estate ‘Squillace ‘ in the far south of Italy where the original Vivarium had been located.

Mr Weretka, who lectures in musicology at Melbourne University, has a long history of academic studies specialising in medieval history.

“I teach an ensemble subject that introduces students to medieval and reconnaissance periods,” he said.

“It means I work with original manuscript sources to teach my students and requires me to play older instruments based on replicas from the medieval and reconnaissance periods as well.”

Mr Weretka added Latin studies to his areas of expertise following further studies of art history with 17th and 18th century art that also

included medieval art, and theology.

“Medieval Latin fitted in very well with studies I had undertaken,” he said.

“I did a full year of Medieval Latin as part of my theology degree and loved it so much I did an entire degree.

“It’s a language that universities teach and one that people often come back to in their later life when they have time.”

The musician, public speaker and educator, who also teaches Latin to U3A online classes, private students, and Latin instructor at New York’s Paideia Institute for Humanistic Study through online classes, said the event catered for varying levels of ability.

With Latin and Greek that connects to the medieval

world, Mr Weretka said text existed that had never been translated or edited.

“If you really set your mind to it, theoretically you could read every single thing in the post medieval period up until the 18th century when Latin was used commonly from novels to scientific research to medicine,” he said.

Mitty Costello from the Melbourne seaside suburb of Mt Eliza said she had studied with Mr Weretka for the last two years mostly online with a small group.

“We loved the weekend and studied at a basic level with translation,” she said.

Ms Costello said Latin is a brain challenger.

“We had amongst us two Anglican priests where one of them had studied Hildegard of Bingen and had been very stimulating to have another perspective as well,” he said.

“We also read a play together and read theological material.”

Christ Church first concert in series for this year kicks off

BEECHWORTH’S Maureen O’Flaherty with a love of music has attended most of the Christ Church concert series since the first one started two years ago.

Looking forward to this year’s concert series which kicks off on Sunday, July 20 with Peter Hagen on harpsichord and Niels Bijlon on saxophone, the Beechworthian said the community is lucky to have talented, professional performers drawn to the town.

The musicians will perform Handel, Vivaldi, De Fesch, Sammartini and Telemann.

“It’s a perfect venue for music lovers as well as musicians with the Church’s incredible acoustics,” she said.

“The concerts are wonderful with such amazing talent where prices are very affordable too.

“If people were attending these concerts in Sydney or Melbourne, tickets would cost at least $100 each.

“It’s going to be fascinating to hear the harpsichord and saxaphone played together with their combined interpretation of baroque music.”

Concert organiser Kate Sutherland said many people lacked an interest in the harpsichord but, when played with another instrument like the saxophone associated with jazz, it made an exquisite combination.

“For me as a music lover it is unusual and has made me curious,” she said.

“When Peter first played in Beechworth he told the story of his harpsichord made in Europe.

“Designed and replicated around Mary Antoinette’s harpsichord it has a pastoral scene painted by an Italian painter under the lid and is a beautiful instrument.”

The program line-up this year includes the Peninsula Chamber Music with harp, flute and cello, and the choir from Melbourne University’s Queen’s College.

Chiltern launches map for historic walk

By CORAL COOKSLEY A MAP with an historic walk around Chiltern originally created by the late Rex Fuge (1935 to 2014) had an official launch with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the town’s Tourist Information Centre on Sunday.

Mr Fuge’s widow Mary, who cut the ribbon, told the Advertiser her Chilternborn husband was passionate about the town and used to walk tourists around the streets explaining Chiltern’s rich history.

“He started off in tourism, had been a shire councillor, and developed an interested in the Chiltern Athenaeum which became his life where he devoted six days a week there,” she said.

“He loved talking to people about Chiltern.”

With the walk starting at the Tourist Information Centre built on the site of the butchery (1863-1920), the map takes in 44 sites of interest that date from 1859, among them the former Star Hotel built in 1866 which is home to the largest grapevine in the Southern Hemisphere that was planted in 1867.

Another is the 1859 Federal Standard building with its remaining original printing press and equipment.

A Cornishtown dairy farmer who had grown up on the family property, she said in his younger days a group of young farmers had purchased the old school that became the community hub.

“He was secretary from that time until we moved into Chiltern in 2006,” Mrs Fuge said.

He had been a Scout leader in Rutherglen for 20 years, a shire councillor from 1974 until amalgamation the 90s, had been president of the Chiltern Athenaeum Trust committee for 35 years until his sudden death in 2014, as well as having a reconstructed historic bridge at Lake Anderson named after him.

Tourism and Development Association chair Ty Bates, who officiated at the launch, said the incredible map gave tourists points of interest to discover.

“People are interested in history and it is a great idea for the town and tourism,” he said.

Chiltern’s engagement and tourism officer Karen Berrysmith said the Athenaeum and Chiltern tourism volunteers had worked together on an update to produce the brochure from Mr Fuge’s hand-written one.

“By working together we got it over the line,” she said.

Ms Berrysmith said the map can be picked up from the Tourist Information Centre.

“It provides information for individual or group walks but guided group tours can

“Should council have to fund the damage repair bill on its own, it is inevitable that other funding priorities, things like community facilities, will have to be deferred to later years.”

Liberal member for Benambra Bill Tilley said “we need to get this right but it also needs to be done sooner rather than later.”

“This is more than just council infrastructure.”

Mr Tilley said his office had received calls from people whose homes were flooded, farms with massive damage and businesses inundated.

“This can’t drag on, some direction is needed now and having spoken with the Emergency Services Minister in parliament today I think this is headed in the right direction.”

An Emergency Management Victoria (EMV) spokesperson said declaring a State of Disaster for funding had no bearing on the eligibility of an event under the joint state and federal Disaster Relief Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

ISC is one of several local council areas in the north east impacted by the storms on January 29-30 that have contacted EMV to activate the event under the DRFA. “As part of this process, EMV will work closely with the impacted councils and our federal colleagues on activating the standard assistance measures under the DRFA for eligible local government areas,” the spokesperson said.

Local history buff remembers the remarkable Ian Jones

By CORAL COOKSLEY LOCAL history buff Daniel Goonan will be among four speakers at next month’s Ian Jones memorial charity event.

‘The Australian Identity’ to be held in Beechworth is a memorial tribute to the late Ian Jones’ (1931 to 1918) contribution to Australian heritage.

Mr Goonan, who had a close working relationship with Mr Jones for more than a decade, will talk about his personal reflections on Mr Jones’ contribution to Beechworth.

In a recount of working with the former journalist, historian and award-winning screenwriter, producer and director of some well-known television shows, Mr Goonan said Ian had always been friendly and liked his facts with thorough research.

“He was great to work with and always prepared to drop everything and help researchers,” Mr Goonan said.

“Ian helped the Burke Museum a lot and if we found something new, we would talk to Ian about it.

“He was the go-to for Ned Kelly information and he helped with Light Horse history where he helped us with a display too lending us a lot of items.

“Whenever he came into the courthouse or museum we were always picking his brain or debating something new about the outlaw that may have been found in one of the newspapers or court records.”

Mr Goonan said the museum had a table called ‘Ian’s table’ featuring his books.

Ian’s first book written on Ned Kelly had been titled ‘The Friendship that destroyed Ned Kelly’ about Kelly gang friends Joe Byrne and Aaron Sherritt.

“I’d run a special tour for the Kelly weekend and he would meet me and walk and talk about Aaron Sherritt and Jo Byrne,” Mr Goonan said.

“It was interesting with his last publication, ‘A Short Life’, that he wouldn’t sign copies due to a disagreement with the publisher’s choice of cover.

“But we knew we could always sell a copy after a Ned

Orienteering training camp shows youth the way

By CORAL COOKSLEY AROUND 50 young people took part in a junior orienteering three-day training camp based in Beechworth at the end of last month.

Run by Orienteering Australia from JJanuary 24 to 26, member Stanley’s Leigh Privett who helped with the event said participants from 15 to 20 years old travelled from all states around the nation as well as one from Finland.

With sprint and exercises in the forest, Mr Privett said juniors trained with local maps at Mayday Hills, Chiltern Mount-Pilot National Park, Racecourse Creek, north of Beechworth and Eldorado.

“The Beechworth area is ideal and great orienteering country due to its complexity

and having features such as granite rocks and cliffs,” he said.

“The youth were coached by our national junior coach Natasha Key helped by four other senior coaching staff members.

“The aim is to give young orienteerers grounding in all aspects of the sport including bush and urban navigation, map reading, and relating terrain on the map to the ground they run over.”

Mr Privett said the group gained skills and knowledge by being together in a friendly competition as they prepared for the next big challenge.

“Being in state teams they head to Kingaroy in Queensland’s south east at Easter where 1500 other competitors will attend in groups from 12 to 90 year-olds,” he said.

“It’s a sport for all ages.”

VALMA Chenoweth was born in Wodonga and has lived in Chiltern for 42 years What did you do as a career?

I worked on the country show circuit with my parents and then for myself. We had various attractions such as merry-go-rounds, ferris wheels, octopus rides and many more for smaller children as well as food vans and ‘joints’ such as hoopla and darts as the showmen knew them in those days.

What took you to that role?

I followed in the steps of my parents which was a very happy time in my life working in the outdoors.

What did you love about your job?

Meeting people from various backgrounds as we moved from town to town around Victoria and southern NSW. What do you do in the community?

Anything where I can help.

I was a Brownie leader for five and a half years and have been teaching Tai Chi every Wednesday for the last 22 years.

I especially loved teaching children Tai Chi and Glenview residents who I miss at the moment due to coronavirus restrictions.

I’m also involved with the senior citizens club with two other coordinators where we run bingo in the Seniors Citizens Hall every fortnight and we love it.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

Recent flooding in the town.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

With heavy rainfalls where parts of the town are always subject to flooding, I feel council could do more about drainage.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

COVID-19. I would like to see a cure for coronavirus so the world can move on.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

Retired senior army officer and former Governor General of Australia from 2014 to 2019, Sir Peter Cosgrove.

He was a graduate from the Royal Military College in Duntroon, served in the Vietnam War and received the Military Cross in 1971, knighted in May 2002 and had been awarded the Legion of Merit.

I would show him our beautiful War Memorial maintained by Indigo Shire Council and our dedicated and proud volunteers.

Why would you show him that?

BUSY: Chiltern’s Valma Chenoweth is an active volunteer in the community, teaches Tai Chi and helps to run bingo at the Senior Citizens Club.

Every Anzac Day everyone from our older members of the community to younger ones march and we have a different guest speaker each year.

On some occasions we have BaNdianabased soldiers join the procession from the Memorial Cenotaph to our Memorial Hall and we look forward to seeing them.

Next I would show him our Athenaeum which is well-maintained by dedicated and passionate volunteers who are always happy to answer visitor questions, and showcase the history of our town and surrounding area that stretches from military memorabilia, old books, letters, photos, clothing from bygone eras to families and their backgrounds.

I would also talk to him about the old gold mines with their history such as Magenta Reef where during its time of operation, Magenta had been an earlier residential area where the population exceeded 20,000 people including 2000 Chinese.

The mine closed in 1910 but had been revived in the depression years of the 1930s.

It is believed that 13,000 ounces of gold had been mined during that time.

I would take him on the walking track where there is a viewing platform.

I think Sir Peter Cosgrove would be impressed in meeting our lovely people, enjoying our pretty town and learning about its history.

What book are you reading?

I rarely have time to read but do enjoy reading newspapers when I get the chance.

Mrs Fisher joins incumbent independent Helen Haines, the Liberal’s Ross Lyman, Labor’s Nadia David and the Green’s Benjamin Gilbert as confirmed candidates to contest the seat at the federal election, which must take place before May 21.

Together with husband Neil - a sixth generation Browns Plains farmer - Mrs Fisher works full-time on their expansive broadacre cropping and prime lamb farming operation, while raising their three children - aged 12 to 15 - and volunteering across a range of local community organisations.

“I grew up at Inverloch, where I enjoyed volunteering and being part of a community,” she said.

“I love living and work-

ing here with my family and feel grateful to call the Indi region home.”

Mrs Fisher has previously worked in business management roles in major companies and also worked in regional development as a project manager, where she assisted seven LGAs across both sides of the border gain collaborative funding.

Nationals State President Neil Pankhurst said as a local business owner and director, the party’s Indi candidate has a wealth of knowledge and understanding of what it takes to operate a small business and the challenges involved.

“Throughout her career to date, Elizabeth has demonstrated how much she loves working in and being a part of her local community, putting in the effort to make the region a better place,” he said.

THE Nationals have confirmed Browns Plains farmer Elizabeth Fisher as their party’s preselected candidate to contest the seat of Indi at this year’s federal election.

Speaking to NEMEDIA, the mother of three who has been “deeply invested” in her rural community between Rutherglen and Wodonga for the last two decades, said she was looking forward to her first foray into politics.

“I’m someone always prepared to put up my hand to get stuff done...that’s been my prime motivation to stand,” Mrs Fisher said.

“While I understand some key issues, I’m am looking forward to getting around the electorate, meeting and listening to people to find out what is important to them.

“My goal is to make sure our leaders in Canberra not only listen but make the decisions for the benefit of Indi.

Zane Howard claimed two nearest the pins on the 7th and the 10th.

There were also four members who played at Waldara in the NEDGA Opening Day. Jan and Dave Lang

were winners in the mixed event, Rod Shaw and Andy Croome also came third in the men’s event.

But the best part of the day for the club was the fact that Jan Lang, Dave Lang and Andy Croome won the prestigious President, Captain and Secretary’s event with a best two out of three score of 71 (Jan 37, Andy 34 and Dave 30).

This coming Sunday at Beechworth is the third round of the Summer Cup.

From back page Cam Fendyk joined Love and they formed a partnership of sorts before Love fell for 21 off 22 balls with the score now at 3/44.

The side was all out for the paltry sum of 74 in just the 22nd over.

Benalla made no mistake in the run chase, with Beechworth unable to take any wickets before the total was passed.

In the end after the 36 overs Benalla amassed 5/172.

Sam Thompson was the pick of the bowlers finishing with 2/22 off eight, Austen Fendyk, Willem Love and Brandon Fitzpatrick picked up a wicket each.

A Reserve are back at home this week taking on Delatite.

C Grade A relatively young C Grade side travelled to Benalla on Saturday and it was great to see three under 14 father and son combos playing.

Benalla won the toss and elected to bat.

Zach Percy and Sarwar Hussain opened the bowling and the Benalla openers got off to a flier until the first wicket fell thanks to a low down catch by Sarwar off Percy’s bowling.

Dylan Pool and Percy slowed the run rate with a stretch of four maiden overs which also included Pool picking up the other Benalla opener.

Vaughan Carter came on and bowled three overs without any luck.

It wasn’t until the youngest player in the team in Archer Warner came into the attack that wickets fell.

His first wicket came from a catch by Dylan Pool and then a great catch from debutant Rama Schulz another under 14 player, behind the stumps.

It looks like we have found a wicket-keeper for C Grade.

Archer picked up another wicket thanks to a catch from Ryan Pollock to finish his five over spell with great figures of 3/26.

The sixth wicket fell thanks to another great catch behind the stumps by Rama from the bowling of Ryan Pollock.

Benalla finished on 6/167 after their 36 overs.

Archer was the pick of the bowlers, but other figures were Dylan Pool 1/11 off eight, Ryan Pollock 1/20 off five and Zach Percy with 1/21 off eight.

Dylan Pool opened the batting and was bowled by chopping it on the last ball of the first over for five runs.

Ryan Pollock continued on from last week but he didn’t have many helpers.

Vaughan Carter 17, Bayden Momm 12, Zach Percy 11 and Archer Warner 14 were the only players to really trouble the scorers as the side was bowled out for 94 in the 30th over.

This Saturday the side takes on Ovens Valley at home at Mayday.

Under 16s Under 16s took to the field

with 11 players and was up against the ladder leaders this time RUB Green at Findlay Oval.

In probably our best bowling and fielding performance of the season, we were able to restrict RUB to 4/58 off their 20 overs.

In reply, we made it to 4/38 so slightly behind at the halfway point, but game on.

A great opening spell by Shon Francis saw him get his first two wickets for the season and he was unlucky not to get one or two more.

He also showed his class and athleticism in the field with some great out fielding and a runout.

Hunter North also grabbed an important wicket (caught

by Skip) and took one of the better slips catches you’ll see.

Great resistance from Tim Cogger and Ryan Pollock saw us through to the 20 over mark ensuring we start day two well and truly in the game.

Under 14s The under 14s side took on Benalla on the turf at Baarmutha Park on Saturday morning.

Like the under 16s the game was played in quarters.

After batting first, Benalla finished on a great score of 2/97 after their first 20 overs.

Will Prebble and Archer Warner were the wicket takers.

In reply Beechworth finished on 5/49.

In what was a close game it was Beechworth who prevailed finishing on 8/90 as apposed to Yarrawongas 4/80.

WDCA Women’s Cricket On Sunday the WDCA/ Beechworth Open Women’s team had a 21 run win at Baarmutha Park over Shepparton Youth Club United to end up finishing the season on top of the ladder with a bye still to come this week.

Batting first the home side made 4/103 with Kate Burns 34, Crystal Stevens 29 retired and Alex Randall 19 the top scorers.

In reply Shepparton could only managed 4/82 off their 20 overs.

Erin Brond and Crystal Stevens were the wicket takers along with Sophie Panozzo and Cystal also getting a run out each.

After winning the toss Benalla got off to a slow but steady start, losing their first wicket with the score on 27, thanks to the combination of the Surreys, with Brenton taking a catch of Kayde’s bowling.

The next wicket fell just five runs later thanks to a run out from Richy Worcester to the bowler’s end and aided by Matt Ryan.

Benalla then put in a 40 run partnership for the third wicket, with Beechworth eventually getting the breakthrough after drinks with the score on 72.

This was the start of the rot for Benalla with the visitors only managing to add another 19 runs to the total and losing another six wickets to finish on 9/91 after their allotted 40 overs.

Kayde was the pick of the bowlers with 4/14 off eight.

Matt Ryan 1/9 off eight, Hamish Malsem 1/11 off eight and Shon Francis 1/16

off six along with a run out to Richy and Matt Ryan were the wicket takers.

A score that the home side should feel comfortable chasing down on a quicker Baarmutha Park than weeks gone by.

After the break it was Kayde Surrey and Matt Ryan again who opened up the batting, and they continued how they had left off in the last few games, setting up the side with a solid first wicket partnership.

Unlike weeks gone by, only a collapse of titanic proportions would take away the win this week as Kayde was the first to fall shortly after drinks, just shy of his half century on 46 and the team’s score on 86.

Clancy Ellett and Matt Ryan made no mistake in getting the last few runs passing the total with ease.

Matt fell shortly after on 45.

The total was passed so this gave the team a chance to shake up the order a bit and have a bit of batting practice but the Bushrang-

ers took regular wickets and stumps was called after the 7th wicket was taken with the score on 115 in just the 33rd over.

A great win, mainly thanks to Kayde Surrey again with bat and ball and also Matt Ryan who also showed how important of a player he is in the side with bat and ball too.

Next week the side makes the long treck to Mansfield to take on Delatite.

A Reserve A Reserve suffered a large defeat at Benalla Gardens on Saturday.

After being sent into bat things didn’t start off too badly with housemates Austen Fendyk and Willem Love opening up the batting.

Fendyk cautiously worked the ball around at one end with Love playing shots more typical of a golfer at the other.

Fendyk was the first to fall for nine with the score on 29.

Captain Pat McCarthy didn’t trouble the scorers as he was dismissed first ball.
