Shire seeks disaster funding INDIGO Shire Council (ISC) has sought disaster emergency funding from the Victorian State Government as the clean up around the shire continues from severe flash flooding two weeks ago when Rutherglen and Chiltern bore the brunt of damage. “It’s a normal process to request emergency disaster

funding for these situations and we rely on the state and federal government for help,” ISC chief executive Trevor Ierino said. “We have alerted the State Government, there are cer-

tain criteria we have to meet with a detailed submission for government support. “We hope to have an answer within the next few weeks but we are dealing with emergency fixes straight away and working through priorities.” Mr Ierino said the damage estimate is unknown at this time but it is expected that

costs will run into hundreds of thousands of dollars and could reach up to a $1 million. “It’s not just about infrastructure with town drainage that hasn’t been able to cope, it’s more about the impact of flooding on roads and into private property as well as culverts on roads being washed away,” he said.

“For example a stretch along the Chiltern-Yackandandah Road looks like a mini-tornado has ripped through the area. “Town drainage takes water away but some of the drainage can’t take the amount of water from severe thunderstorms and stays on the road. ■ Continued page 8
