Caravan park primed to develop COMMUNITY debate has emerged in Beechworth following Indigo Shire Council’s adoption of its draft Caravan Park Masterplan for four parks around the shire at last month’s council meeting. Some Beechworth community members have raised concerns about the lack of public consultation with the proposed development. Local resident Kerry Bromage said she was worried about the potential loss of many trees to the area and the environmental, aesthetic and visual impacts. Ms Bromage said many people around town she has spoken to were unaware of

the proposal that carries a September 27 submission cut-off date of date for public comment. She believes additional communication channels should have been used to raise awareness in the community besides council relying on digital media platforms, such as the community consultation undertaken in 2015 for the Lake
Sambell development when stalls and display boards were set up in the town’s CBD with staff to answer questions. “It’s quite difficult to find the public display on their website and a lot of people struggle with accessing computer sites,” she said. Ms Bromage said the proposal includes a new residence, office and carpark at the caravan park’s entrance near the caravan park sign with boom gate and cabins and glamping tents on the other side of the lake near a
foreshore area. Ms Bromage said, according to the plan, the current park boundary will extend into the public area by 12 metres to accommodate the cabins. “The wetlands area will be affected if they go ahead with the proposed water park idea and I believe there will be an impact on wildlife,” she said. “That area of the caravan park, under the current lease is an overflow camping area, and there are no dwellings, cabins or other infrastruc-
ture there. It is a beautiful green area. “The area would be visually affected from the wellused walkway around the lake to the east and west too.” “And there is also another six acre boundary adjustment which is currently part of Beechworth recreation reserve on the eastern side.” “It is a draft plan but in the council agenda it states that following the community consultation process, it is unlikely to have an impact on the outcome. ■ Continued page 7
