Taxi service despair Residents left in the lurch amid local transport shortfall

SOME Beechworth residents have been left in dire straits with little access to transport after a Beechworth-based taxi service shut down last week, prompting calls for an expanded transport service in the town. Retired ABC Radio food broadcaster and food writer Barb Lowery, who lives in Beechworth, is dependent on the taxi service to meet her needs. Ms Lowery said an opportunity existed in the town for another taxi service to start up. No longer able to drive, the local resident said she relied on the taxi service for grocery shopping and attending medical appointments, as well as catching up with friends in town. Ms Lowery said a community bus could be an option to help people. “It would be handy to have one that perhaps commences in town and does a small loop around Beechworth which would be really helpful for people to get to the supermarket, shop, or catch up with a friend,” she said. “I have to say to friends when you’re going down town next, would you be good enough to call me and could I come with you but then I

service has made life difficult for the retiree now needing to rely on family when visiting or friends which is not always convenient for everyone.
