cameras at a cost of no more than $5000 each, which will be deployed in consultation with Wodonga police command to address crime hotspots and deter rising rates of domestic
violence. Deputy Mayor Bernard Gaffney pointed to recent Crime Statistics Victoria data, which indicated an 18.9pc increase in reported crime across the shire in the last 12 months, despite the crime rate remaining well below the state average. He said regular
consultations with police through the shire’s local safety committee, as well as at a recent neighbourhood policing forum with senior area commanders had endorsed the need to act to more efficiently apprehend offenders. The increase has largely been driven by an increase in reported domestic
violence and breaches of intervention orders, according to Cr Gaffney. “We have a low crime rate and we want it to stay that way – police told us of the importance of CCTV in solving (domestic violence) offences and bringing those responsible to justice,” he said. ■ Continued page 3
