TWO out of five finalists for Beechworth projects entered in various categories for this year’s Keep Australia Beautiful Victorian Tidy Towns and Cities Sustainability awards clinched wins.

The Beechworth Historic Courthouse Kelly Trials entry nabbed the Heritage and Culture

category while the Kerrupjmara Meats and Wadeye Youth and Butchery project won the Indigenous Culture category.

Local entry organisers Iris Mannik and Anne Wilson were thrilled with the outcome and delivered the awards on Wednesday this week.

The pair had accepted the awards on the winners’ behalf at a

presentation in Melbourne.

Beechworth butcher Luke Brock from Kerrupjmara Meats is over the moon with the win.

“It’s great to be recognised as the venture only kicked off earlier this year after two years of planning,” he said.

“For me it means what we’re doing is important and people can see it’s worthwhile,” Mr Brock said.

Kerrupjmara Meats joined forces with Thamarrurr Youth Corporation with offices in both the isolated Northern Territory community of Wadeye and Bright to give young people additional skills needed in a remote community.

The project’s aim is to improve the lives of First Nations peoples from the Thamarrurr region.

Fire danger period begins Monday, November 18 THE Fire Danger Period (FDP) will begin at 1am on Monday, November 18, for CFA’s North East region.

FDP will begin for local government areas including Indigo, Wangaratta, Benalla, Mansfield, Alpine, Towong, Wodonga, and also alpine resorts Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller.

CFA District 23 acting assistant chief fire officer Steve Contessa said now is the time for residents to be aware of the conditions around them and to prepare their properties.

“While we’ve had some recent rain, we are concerned that this has caused significant growth in surrounding vegetation,” Mr Contessa said.

“The warmer weather and windy days will see this quickly dry out, significantly increasing the risk of fire to communities across the North East.”

District 24 assistant chief fire officer Brett Myers said there is a great deal of fuel out there and they’re predicting a summer of grassfires.

“We’re asking people to keep an eye out on the VicE-

areas is considered normal, it’s crucial not to be complacent; fires can still occur anytime and anywhere when temperatures rise, and vegetation dries out.

CFA’s 52,000 members are poised to respond and support communities this bushfire season, they’re urging people to use common sense and take responsibility for preventing fires.

By registering your burnoff online, you allow emergency call takers to allocate more of their time taking calls from people who need emergency assistance immediately.

No burning off is permitted during the FDP without a ‘permit to burn’, which can

be applied for through the Fire Permits Victoria website.

There are very strict conditions attached to these permits and the liability sits with the permit holder to ensure they always act safely.

Fire Danger Period information: A written permit is required to burn off grass, undergrowth, weeds or other vegetation during the FDP. You can apply for a permit at firepermits.vic.gov.au and it can also be issued by the municipal fire prevention officer or the CFA district office.

Lighting fires in the open without a permit can bring a penalty of more than $21,800 and/or 12 months imprisonment.

“The program is about training to resource their own food, pack it hygienically, refrigerate and then freeze it and means food for everyone in their community.

“We also undertake some training when we return to their community.”

A purpose-built trailer funded by the Northern Territory government through the corporation is also brought to Beechworth for training.

Indigo Shire’s Cultural Heritage and Museums manager Stephen Payne said the award is a wonderful recognition of many years of hard work and care put into keeping the beautiful Courthouse building as done with the historic precinct.

“It’s not just about council, it’s about all the community who have helped to maintain and support the courthouse over many years with extensive community consultation to make

sure proper care and attention was paid to the building and to the stories that it holds, particularly with the Kelly trials,” he said.

“It’s a big story for the region and for the community, and it was important that we made sure everyone was involved for the best possible outcome.

“We’ve been able to implement this project in this significant building and in a way, it is a model as the precinct now has national heritage listing.”

Ms Mannik said Beechworth projects in the awards are up against others from across Victoria.

Ms Wilson said project finalists and winners should be very proud of themselves with what they are doing with their projects.

“I think the whole town should get behind every single one of them and support them in their endeavours,” she said.

Winners were announced at a gala event held in Melbourne on Monday, October 28 with finalists attending from across the state.

Long standing volunteer steps down

By CORAL COOKSLEY A LONGTIME volunteer and coordinator for Beechworth’s annual community Christmas lunch has hung her hat up after 14 rewarding years.

A morning tea was held at Miss Emelie Gourmet in Beechworth for Christine Cansfield-Smith at the end of last month by the Christmas lunch working party and volunteers to thank the dedicated volunteer for her remarkable contribution.

Ms Cansfield-Smith began as a volunteer in 2010 before taking on the role to coordinate the lunch a few years later for the festive event while working together as part of the organising team to bring the event together.

The working party cohort includes representatives from Beechworth Health Service, Quercus Beechworth Neighbourhood Centre, the Salvation Army,

Indigo Shire Council, and community members.

Ms Cansfield-Smith said she always thought Christmas is a time of giving and is a chance to help bring the community together.

“For me it has meant making the day a lovely time for others to enjoy and has fulfilled a need to help organise a special time,” she said.

Ms Cansfield-Smith said the community lunch had grown from around 40 people on the day to more than 200 meals prepared for a sit-down meal including hampers that can instead be taken away.

The Beechworthian also said she has enjoyed being part of the organising team as a community representative along with a group of dedicated volunteers on the day.

“Christine has been so hospitable and organised with a great group of volunteers behind her,” she said.

“Volunteers have worked

at the Christmas lunch taking on tasks as well making her job easier along with organising committee members getting the day to where it needs to be.

“Christine has stepped in on the day, has done an

amazing job making sure it’s successful, and warm and inviting for everyone.”

Organising committee team member Beechworth’s Salvation Army Major Pauline Middleton said Christine has made an amazing

contribution.

“She made everyone welcome and ran the event smoothly with a very calm manner,” she said.

“What a gift to the community she has been.

“Without her undertaking the day’s coordination it wouldn’t be the community it is today as the Christmas lunch has been an enormous benefit to our growing community.

“She was an integral part of the team.”

Ms Cansfield-Smith said she hoped someone from the community will pick the co-ordinator position up on Christmas Day for the lunchtime event.

“It is really very rewarding,” she said.

Young creatives to create artwork for Golden Horseshoes Festival

YOUNG talented creatives are invited to help design next year’s Golden Horseshoes Festival poster and program with its theme ‘Cultures through Time.’

The competition closes on November 21 with the winner clinching the chance to officially open the festival with the town’s mayor as well as receiving a hamper full of surprises.

The long running festival drawing crowds from near and far is set for a family fun time over the Easter long weekend from April 18 to 21 2025.

Recently taking up the role of committee chair, Beechworth’s Josh Kardol said he loved the festival’s family atmosphere.

Mr Kardol said he is driven by the festival bringing families together for a day or a weekend to enjoy entertainment, a variety of food and have a look around the town.

He said volunteers including committee members contributed a substantial number of hours in planning and running the event.

“It takes a lot of people to run the festival, and we need at least 40 volunteers on the Saturday,” he said.

With the festival also relying on grants and sponsorship, Mr Kardol said more of both meant extra entertainment for everyone to enjoy.

“Provided we get enough funds, there’s probably going to be more live entertainment, “he said.

On the horizon are some new festival activities such as theatre groups performances, roaming performers, workshops and more hands-on activities for the kids.

“We’re all pumped and I’m driven to keep the festival going with the team,” Mr Kardol said.

He said organising the festival is a team effort with 11 volunteers on the committee including new members while some longstanding members could no longer take part.

Among new approaches to the festival among is a recently initiated business survey to help connect with local businesses.

“We’re very open to taking

on board new ideas and new initiatives,” Mr Kardol said.

Festival committee secretary Lisa Kirton said activities loved in the multigenerational festival are being retained while some new ones will be introduced with something for everyone.

“I’m excited moving the festival a little more towards being multicultural,” she said.

While building on previous festivals, the special event is gravitating towards celebrating past and present cultures as well as the festival’s foundation history.

“We’re bringing a little more in on the cultural front, and through that some hands-on activities and youth opportunities,” Ms Kirton said.

The pair said they hoped for additional funding with some further grant applications underway while still securing major sponsors to keep the much-loved festival moving forward.

Haines secures review into expanding prac payments to allied health INDI Independent federal MP Helen Haines has secured an important amendment to the Universities Accord (Student Support and Other Measures) Bill 2024 that will ensure a review of the prac payment system is undertaken after three years, specifically looking at the inclusion of allied health placements.

As part of its response to the Universities Accord, the government announced in the May Budget that it would fund payments for 68,000 students undertaking mandatory placements in teaching, nursing, social work and midwifery.

The Parliament passed the legislation to enact the framework for payments last week.

Dr Haines said the payments were a welcome start, but called on the government to go further to meaningfully address placement poverty in regional Australia.

“Unpaid practical placements are a huge financial burden on students and a barrier to completing higher education in professions

our region desperately needs,” she said.

“Students studying allied health courses like physiotherapy, speech pathology and occupational therapy also undertake long unpaid placements, and they deserve these payments too.”

Occupational therapy and physiotherapy requires 1000 hours of clinical placement, dieticians a minimum of 100 days, and medical radiation practitioners require 52 weeks of placement over four years.

“Student placements could be anywhere in Australia and students often incur travel and accommodation costs,” Dr Haines said.

“Placement poverty is a very real thing in regional Australia.

“Of course, I want to see allied health placements included earlier than this, but this ensures there is an accountability step at the three-year mark.”

Dr Haines also supported changes to the indexation of student debt, to ensure that HELP loans never rise faster than inflation.

Asylumfest draws huge crowd

HORROR lovers in droves flocked to Beechworth’s Mayday Hills for an annual Asylumfest held at the end of last month.

In its third year, the threeday horror book and pop culture festival organised by Beechworth Ghost Tours over the October 27 to 29 weekend drew people locally, from around the region as well as interstate.

Held in the Bijou Theatre of the old asylum, the Ghost Tour’s operator Geoff Brown said people travelled from as far as Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, and Wagga.

“This subculture of horror lovers is big and strong, we stick together, and we go to everything that interests us,” Mr Brown said.

Dion Smith tripped from Wagga Wagga to the Asylumfest for the second time after he discovered the event last year.

“I love horror books and once I knew there was going to be horror authors here, I had to come along, and plan to keep coming back,” he said.

Horror author and artist David Schembri has participated since the festival started as well as being an event sponsor.

“It’s great because we get a collective of different creatives here with a lot of individuality from not only artwork and authorship, but you have sculp-

tors and craft too,” he said.

Mr Schembri said he had been writing seriously for more than two decades while illustrating since grade three.

Mr Brown said this year’s event had a significant increase in attendance with 1000 people registered.

“It tripled the number from last year,” he said.

The organiser said among event features were trading tables, authors, artists, and a gaming company, a ghost story competition as well as a soldout feature film with special guest Chris Sun from the Gold Coast who made the movie shown at the festival.

An excited Mr Brown said with the event’s success, plans are underway to expand next year’s festival with an anticipation of doubling the attendance from this year.

Mr Brown said the Ghost tour business attracted 20,000 visitors throughout the year, as well as the growing Asylumfest, boosting the local economy.

“We encourage people to support local businesses, and they’re happy to,” he said.

The decommissioned asylum in Mayday Hills was one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in Victoria.

The hospital closed in 1995 after running for 128 years while in its peak time had more than 1200 patients with 500 staff.

Falling in love with Beechworth JESSICA Hercott was born in the Victorian town of Boort and grew up not far away in Pyramid Hill.

She left little Pyramid Hill for Bendigo at 16 years old hoping to get the right school subjects to become a vet but then moved again to Hobart for year 12 where Jessica fell in love with the outdoors.

In Tassie she gained raft-guiding qualifications setting a career in outdoor guiding in motion.

With her partner and their dog, the pair moved to Beechworth for work in May this year.

What do you do workwise?

After becoming qualified in outdoor recreation, I travelled, worked seasonally from summer to summer at outdoor camps in Australia as well as in America and Europe.

When COVID hit I chose to get into hospitality becoming a baker then moved into the kitchen becoming a chef.

I worked at the Carlton Wine Room in Melbourne, and then Little Picket in Lorne.

The head chefs at Little Picket recently started up a pie company in Beechworth called Wild Pie and that’s how I ended up here.

What do you love about your work?

I love that there’s a purpose behind what we are doing.

The proteins that we use to

With food security and prices being a hot topic, it’s such a great opportunity to be a part of.

And the bosses are pretty legendary.

What do you do in the community?

The first weekend my partner and I moved to Beechworth the Farmers’ Market was on.

I had been thinking of joining the CFA for a while but had not been in one spot long enough to commit.

That market day the Beechworth Fire Brigade had a stall and that afternoon I was signed up.

I feel pretty grateful to be with such a great diverse crew.

I also participate in the Bridge Road Brewers (BRB) run club on Monday nights and have Dog Squad (canine training for the pet pooch) on Wednesday nights.

Is there an important community issue that you think

needs addressing?

Having not been in the town long I really can’t think of any issues.

If anything, I keep finding great things about it.

More places to explore, or groups and events to get involved in, especially now the weather is warming up.

Maybe if the bridge down at the gorge was fixed though, that would be nice.

If the person you would most like to meet or knew, came to Indigo Shire or was already here, who would that be, what would you show them, and why?

I’d love to show my brother around, take him adventuring through the shire.

Go swimming in some epic waterholes, go for a walk up Mt Pilot, go fishing in the Stanley dam, and ride the bikes along the Epic Bike Trail from Beechworth to Yackandandah.

Growing up in Pyramid where the hill was granite gives Beechworth this funny homely feeling to me, and I would like him to experience that.

What is a recent book you have read?

The last book I read was “The Fourth Wing” by Rebecca Yarros.

I’m a sucker for reading about dragons and adventures and this book has all of those things.

HALLOWEEN LOOKS Eleanor McCann, Deanne Drage (aka Maleficent), Evelina Novak and Hugh McCann were among Beechworth’s excited youngsters as well as those a ‘little older’ who took part in Halloween last Thursday night.

Deanne said every year Maleficent welcomed around 350 creatively dressed trick or treaters with skeletons, crimes scenes, a spooky graveyard, and a witch’s den making Halloween a lot of fun.

Competitions heating up on the golf course

SPRING SWING: Jarryd Pritchard tees off during twilight golf.

LAST Wednesday the women played the October Monthly Medal and the scores were hot.

The winner of the medal was Nada Guyatt with a fantastic score of 90/26/64 (Par 70).

Runner up was Gail Smith 87/21/66.

Next to follow were Glenda Marshall 68, Judy Pierce 71, Doyna Collins 72, and Deb Tully 73.

In the Matchplay Championships Gail defeated Deb. Glenda Marshall had a day out on the nearest the pins, claiming the prize on the 5th, 10th and 17th.

On Thursday we continued our great field of players for twilight golf with 23 players trudging around the back nine.

The winner was Daniel Balzer with 22 points (21+1).

Runner up and the winner of the Bridge Road Brewers voucher was Tyson Carey with 21 points (22-1).

Ball winners were Dayne Carey 20, Jacob Howard 19, Alastair Palmer 18, Jarryd Pritchard 18, Willem Love 18 and Lachie Milhinch 18.

The cash for the nearest chip on the 14th went to Brian Pritchard.

Daniel Balzer claimed the Beechworth Bakery voucher for his nearest the pin on the 10th and the Alpine Indigo Accounting nearest the pin half dozen again went unclaimed on the 17th.

Jarryd Pritchard won the CC’s Quality Meats & Smokehouse voucher in the raffle.

On Sunday 11 Beechworth members travelled to Yackan-

dandah for their Men’s Tournament.

We had a great feed, the course was great and company outstanding as usual.

Dylan Pool claimed the A Grade Handicap title with 73/1/72 nett while Vaughan Saunders as runner up in the A Grade Scratch with 75.

Everyone else from Beechworth, I’m sure had a great day.

This coming Sunday is the first round of the Men’s Club Championships.

We would love to see as many players as possible participating.

A chance for young students to play golf

By CORAL COOKSLEY A COHORT of 32 local primary school students had a chance to swing irons at Beechworth Golf Club last Friday.

The club initiative with an Indigo Shire ‘Get Active’ grant gave Beechworth Primary School (BPS) girls an in years five and six an opportunity to try out the sport.

BPS physical education (PE) teacher Scott Forrest said the club had applied for the grant to attract more young girls to play golf with support through training and learning on how to play.

“There’s one student really interested in playing who is being given a set of golf clubs as her dad is super keen to encourage her play the sport,” he said.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for the girls, and we can walk to here from the school,” he said.

Beechworth Golf Club committee member Debbie Tully said the club was interested in a session with all the girls as well as being involved with the school.

“It meant it was part of their curriculum and all the girls would have a chance to play, not just if they could make it at the weekend or after school,” she said.

“This is just the first one

we’ve run, so we’ll see how it goes, and then we’ll talk to the school and see if they’d like us to be involved in the future.”

Ms Tully said the club is trying to grow the sport especially in the women’s area.

“We have a very strong group of working women that are now part of our club,” she said, “We’re looking to the younger girls who will be coming up through the ranks and I think it is important that that we encourage the girls to have a go.”

Ms Tully said the club hopes to offer the opportunity to other primary schools in the area - St Josephs, Wooragee and Montessori - next year.

“If any of the girls after today enjoyed it enough to think they may like to play golf in the future, parents are more than welcome to contact us,” she said.

“We can accommodate any girls who are keen to keep going with golf, and we would take them out and mentor them on the golf course.”

Ms Tully and Jan Lang had teamed up to create the initiative while five other women in the club had come along to help and support students in learning to play golf.

Steady as they go for Wanderers

By SHANE DOUTHIE PATIENCE will be the key when Beechworth Wanderers continue their chase to overhaul Rovers United Bruck’s (RUB) gettable total of 189 in round 4 of WDCA A grade.

That said they will have to do it without opener Kayde Surrey who was dismissed for just two runs caught off the bowling of Jacob Schonafinger when Wanderers had to navigate two overs before the close of play last Saturday.

It was Schonafinger who earlier provided the anchor for RUB’s total, top-scoring with 51 as his teammates fell around him at regular intervals, despite several making handy starts.

Wanderers coach Kate Burns was happy with the side’s effort to restrict RUB to fewer than 200 runs on the fairly hard Baarmutha Park ground.

“The under 16s in the game before were going at a run a ball so I thought our bowlers did pretty well,” Burns said.

“When Richie (Worcester) felt some tightness in his hammy (after just eight overs) a few others had to step up and bowl some extra overs.

“I was particularly impressed with Henry Scalzo, he bowled really well and is only in his first year out of juniors.”

Scalzo took 2/21 from seven overs with his left-arm seamers, his inswingers causing headaches for the right-handed batters.

Kayde Surrey took 3/17 from 12 overs, while Brenton Surrey and Timothy Cogger took two each and Jack Ryan deserves a mention for his epic 18 overs effort.

Burns said while the 190 target was achievable her side won’t be taking anything for granted.

“We have to secure the points first before we think about anything else,” she said.

“They’ve got a lot of talent in

“Before the game I would have said Kayde was due for a big score, he’s been batting so well, but he got himself out and will now face a long day ahead watching the others.

“We have the batting depth, players like Clancy (Ellett) and Brenton

know what to do and young Will Prebble at number three is due.

“He’s only 15 but it shows how much faith Brenton has in him.”

If the Wanderers can reach the target on Saturday, what happens after that will depend on a number of factors.

“If we can get the 190 it will be up to Brenton to decide which way we go, whether it’s chasing more runs or going for quick wickets, he’ll decide that on the field,” Burns said.

“But we have to focus on reach-

ing the target before anything else.”

And while the A grade men do battle this weekend, the under 14 girls have their second round of matches with Beechworth taking on RUB at Mayday Hills Oval from 9am on Sunday.

Burns said more girls are invited to join the club as the competition hopes to expand.

“Not all girls want to play with the boys so if you love cricket this is the place to be,” she said.

“The under 14s are coached by Lewis Richards and we want to encourage more girls to get involved.

“It’s a really great environment for kids to be a part of.”

Burns said she was hopeful of organising some friendlies for the senior women’s side too so any women interested is also urged to come along.
