Region leads way NE Victoria hosts first international social enterprise rural meeting in Southern Hemisphere THE AUSTRALIAN Centre for Rural Entrepreneurship (ACRE) based in Beechworth has been regarded as one of the global leaders in rural social enterprise dialogue by a world expert. ACRE hosted the first international Social Enterprise World Forum Rural Gathering in the Southern Hemisphere from Sunday to Wednesday this week which drew social enterprise founders, policy makers and impact investors

from rural and remote Australia, Canada, Scotland, Ireland and India. The Rural Gathering presented a landmark opportunity to accelerate change for rural communities in Australia and internationally. Participants visited North East Victoria to explore
pioneering approaches to community-led rejuvenation being used in rural Australia and rural communities across the globe. Social Enterprise World Forum managing director and founder Gerry Higgins said ACRE had worked hard to establish its position as a global leader by being the leading organisation in Australia flying the flag for rural social enterprise. “We’ve recognised this and want to work in partnership
with ACRE going forward to convene globally,” he said. Mr Higgins said local social enterprises are more important in many rural communities than in urban ones as there a lack of alternatives in rural communities. “Rural communities have the same issues in common around the world and where we’ve been able to share solutions, share issues and develop a manifesto that goes forward to make sure
that this dialogue continues, there will be more countries involved,” he said. “ACRE will be at the heart of it.” The Rural Gathering three-day program included immersive field trips across North East Victoria where participants met diverse and vibrant rural social enterprise founders based in Yackandandah, Corryong and Bright, solving local issues and creating opportunities. ■ Continued page 2
