CFA board member for Victoria, Dawn Hartog, presented the medals and said they were an important recognition of the valiant efforts of CFA members.

“The National Emergency Medal is a formal recognition that Australia appreciates the efforts and contributions of CFA mem-

bers during the 2019-2020 bushfire crisis,” she said.

Captain Smith said 22 firefighters from the Stanley brigade put in more than 1000 hours over a three week period in the 2019-2020 devastating fires where the crew helped teams in Corryong, Walwa and Cudgewa as well as around the Mount

Buffalo area.

“There was a major involvement with our members having various responsibilities such as staging area management, incident control centre, strike team leaders, scribes and transport - it was a fantastic effort by all,” he said.

CFA member John Thexton said it had been rewarding in receiving recognition with w the medal.

He said the crew that travelled to Corryong had been able to help hold the bushfire back north of the town.

“If we hadn’t been there, then there would have been a far greater threat to the w town,” he said.

CFA member Michael Nuck, who is also the deputy group officer for the Bogong Group consisting of 14 brigades, said it had been great to see volunteer members rewarded with appreciation for their efforts. w “They put in an extended effort during the Upper Murray fires and then the Mount Buffalo fires,” he said.

The National Emergency Medal is part of Australia’s Honours and Awards system and recognises significant or sustained service to others in a nationally significant Australian emergency.

Healthy working space for men’s shed members

By CORAL COOKSLEY A NEW dust extractor system recently installed at Beechworth Men’s Shed has meant an improved and healthier working environment for its members.

Shed president Ian Smith said funding for the health and safety initiative had been received from

the Australian Men’s Shed Association grant program with another grant from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

“The previous system had been a second hand purchase and became increasingly inadequate in dust removal,” he said.

“We ripped it out and replaced

it with the new one that’s working really well.”

Mr Smith said with combined funding where the Men’s Shed also chipped in $2000 the total cost of the project was just over $13,000 with the system purchased from a company that specialises in them.

Encouraging men at all ages to join the shed, Mr Smith said

members had the chance to learn new skills.

“Being a member is good for men’s health, we have great comeradie and talk shoulder to shoulder,” he said.

The Beechworth Men’s Shed runs every week on Monday and Wednesday from 9am-4pm and on Friday from 9am-1pm.

United effort to form inaugural Indigo Local Safety Committee ORGANISATIONS from across the North East have joined forces to form a committee dedicated to improving community safety within Indigo Shire.

The Indigo Local Safety Committee, made up of representatives from Wodonga Police, Indigo Shire Council, a number of state government organisations and local community groups

launched launched last Friday in Beechworth when it met for its inaugural meeting.

Local Safety Committees (LSC) are an initiative developed by Victoria Police and form a key part of the Victoria Police Neighbourhood Policing Framework, which refocuses local police on community engagement and grassroots policing.

Senior Sergeant Shane Martin from Wodonga Police said that Local Safety Committees are a local multiagency partnership and provide the opportunity to work closer together to improve community safety.

“Through this committee, we’ve established a forum for community members, groups and local organisations to refer safety issues to

delegates for consideration and action,” Snr Sgt Martin said.

Local Safety Committees also present the opportunity for members to discuss and develop local crime prevention strategies and advocate to the relevant levels of government and community sectors to source the resources required to support innovative crime

prevention solutions.

Indigo Shire Mayor Bernard Gaffney said the establishment of an LSC for Indigo is critical to ensure that conversations about local issues are kept local.

“The Indigo LSC is the opportunity for us to take a tailored approach to local crime and safety issues,” Cr Gaffney said.

“By working closely with

our partners in the Indigo and North East region, we can aim to address local issues at a local level.

“We’re pleased to have an established framework in which we can keep core community issues on the table and at the front of mind of the relevant organisations.”

The Indigo LSC will meet quarterly.

Beechworth Toy Library gains momentum with funding

BEECHWORTH Toy Library is forging ahead with improvements and upgrades from recent grants received to help.

Committee volunteer Jill Croome said the library relied on grants while the recently opened library develops a strong membership base.

Ms Croome said the library recently received a $1500 grant from the community Beechworth Bendigo Bank as well as one from Indigo Shire Council.

“Council funding was used to purchase updated

toys, particularly large items that most families can’t accommodate, and additional equipment for the party hire pack,” she said.

The volunteer said the toy library enabled access to a range of toys, games, outdoor activities and party hire equipment, reducing clutter, avoiding waste and saving families money.

“Annual membership cost is $40 for unlimited access to toys,” she said.

“The toy library reopened in September last year, and the new committee has been busy checking all the toys, removing old

stock, purchasing new toys and working to attract new members.”

“We are really pleased that we have had many new members join since we reopened, and really appreciate their support and look forward to new members or other interested people coming to have a look and chat to us to find out more about the toy library”.

“We are also planning an event to be held in Spring.”

The toy library located at the rear of the Uniting Church, corner Ford and William Streets is open every Saturday morning from 10am -11am.

Hawkins announces second tilt at Benambra AFTER swinging the formerly safe Liberal seat of Benambra closer to independent representation in the 2018 Victorian election, Baranduda local Jacqui Hawkins has announced her intention to run as an independent once again in this year’s state election.

With family, friends and “Team Yellow” supporters by her side, Ms Hawkins officially announced her plans to run at a small celebratory event at Wodonga’s Junction Square on Wednesday morning.

She said she was keen to build on the momentum generated by her 2018 campaign, and to reiterate her commitment to representing the community as an independent in state parliament.

“I’m committed to ensuring people in our community have their voices heard, and their needs and priorities represented without party politics getting in the way,” she said.

“As I announce my candidacy today, I commit to putting our community first in everything I do throughout this campaign, and should I be elected to the Victorian Parliament.”

Ms Hawkins is a fifth generation local who grew up on a family farm in Staghorn Flat, and now calls Baranduda home.

“I have lived, worked, volunteered and studied here most of my life,” she said.

“My work has taken me across a range of sectors from veterinary services to manufacturing; research and development to road construction; state and federal politics to higher education.

“Most recently I’ve worked in bushfire recovery across north-east Victoria and have supported the recovery of regional tourism following bushfire and COVID-19.”

She said her work and volunteering activities, as well as her preparations for both the 2018 and 2022 Victorian election campaigns, had taken her across Benambra to listen to and learn from people from all walks of life, and had given shape to her campaign priorities.

“What I’ve heard in communities across Benambra is that the bushfires and the pandemic have taken their toll on individuals, families, businesses and communities,” Ms Hawkins said.

“Community members that I’ve spoken to have talked about their need for accessible and high quality health and mental health facilities, their difficulties coping with the cost of living and the stresses of the local hous-

ing market, and the connections between work, childcare and education.

“It’s very clear that there is a dire need for a new hospital for our community, and this is a real priority of mine.

“These are the areas on which I’ll be focusing my attention during this campaign.”

Ms Hawkins said she was inspired by the work of federal and Victorian independents and that she was excited about being able to bring a fresh approach to politics in Benambra.

“During the past few years, we’ve seen independent representatives across the country facilitate true participatory politics in their electorates,” she said.

“In Shepparton and Mildura, in particular, community independents have been able to take their communities’ voices directly to the Victorian Parliament and deliver remarkable results for local people.

“This is what I want to be able to achieve for our communities across Benambra.”

Pub Exhibition opens in Stanley

By CORAL COOKSLEY AN EXHIBITION opening of ‘Stanley Pubs, Ales and Tales’ at the Stanley Post and Community Hub in the old Stanley School last Thursday evening drew an estimated 100 locals.

Informative illustrated story panels about the pubs and locally found objects have been showcased conveying community importance and essential role of hotels during the gold rush era.

The story of hotels cover the history of Stanley and the vital role played by them in providing food and drinks as well as accommodation and entertainment.

Stanley Athenaeum’s Chris Dormer said the exhibition highlighted the significant contribution of women as publicans and the diversity of the community on the goldfields.

The exhibition’s objects include bottles, china, wallpaper and original signage

where many of these have been unearthed around the local area.

MC for the opening, Stanley’s Chris Baker, said the objects characteristic of the area gave people a connection to the hotels of the time.

“We’re very fortunate to still have the Stanley pub,” he said.

A collaborative venture between Stanley Athenaeum and Stanley Rural Community Inc (SRCI), Ms Dormer said the exhibition will be engaging for locals, visitors and anyone interested in the local area and hotels.

Mr Baker said old Ovens and Murray Advertiser editions had many finds of publican life with their involvement in the community such as getting the horse racing and cricket going.

undertaking an exhibition in Bathurst in New South Wale.

“So I thought I’d have another go at an exhibition and decided on Stanley pubs as the subject and the community is very proud of our Stanley pub, formerly known as the Star Hotel,” he said.

“Research involved a lot of reading and checking primary sources.

“And we’re very lucky to have had our own historian Jeff Craig, who has written a number of books and brochures and pamphlets about the history of Stanley.

“I also found the book ‘Hearts of Gold and Mines of Metal by Athenaeum members Robyn Harcourt, Helen McIntyre and Valerie Privett also a valuable source of information.

Exhibition curator Ali Rowe designed and produced the panels.

Mr Absler said he came to appreciate the tough times in the early days when the gold miners lived in

tents and working all day not knowing whether they would find gold.

The exhibition is open until June next year.

Maxwell disappointed over inaction on misused funds WANGARATTA-based state MP Tania Maxwell has thrown her support behind calls for the Labor Party to repay taxpayer funds found to be misused following an investigation by the state’s Independent Broad-based Anticorruption Commission (IBAC) and Ombudsman.

The Operation Watts special report initially published on July 20 uncovered a catalogue of “unethical and inappropriate behaviour” which included the hiring of unqualified employees into taxpayerfunded roles and interference with government grants provided to community organisations.

Speaking in parliament earlier this week, Ms Maxwell expressed her disappointment in the State

Government, calling on Premier Daniel Andrews to set an example for parliamentary integrity and pay back the misused money.

“On June 8, in this very place, I put forward a motion about that type of conduct as it relates to bullying and harassment and to examine what support and oversight was in place - at the time I reflected that parliament and its members should be exemplars of best practice,” she said.

“Reading the Operation Watts report further affirms my view that the review of the parliament as a workplace that I proposed is essential - the heads of the highest integrity bodies in our state say that Victoria is now a laggard rather than a leader in parliamen-

tary integrity.

“I am bewildered how the premier can say he takes full responsibility for the conduct outlined in the report and that he supports its 21 recommendations, but then says that repaying taxpayers’ money, which was clearly identified in the inquiry, is not required because it was a recommendation.”

Ms Maxwell’s motion, in response to opposition leader in the upper house David Davis’ call for Mr Andrews to repay more than $1.3m in misappropriated funds, stated the Operation Watts report had gone to the heart of the integrity and ethical conduct of parliamentarian, ministers and their respective staff.

“It is completely hypocritical to say that you’re going beyond the recommendations when it does not include repaying public money that was blatantly misused,” she said.

“Surely our premier made a faux pas and meant to say that his moral and ethical duty was to ensure that taxpayers’ money would be repaid as his first priority and that he does not require a recommendation in a report to make that decision.

“Pay back the money - you said yourself that you need to do more than just offer words - it has to be about action.

“Be true to that statement and pay the money back.”

Free Red Cross first aid course coming to Indigo AS part of community recovery following the devastating 2019/20 bushfires, Red Cross has been offering free first aid courses in many of the smaller bushfire affected communities in North East Victoria.

With the outbreak of COVID 19 a month or two after the end of the 2019/20 fires it has been difficult for communities to have face to face contact and get together with one another and for Red Cross to provide bushfire recovery support.

Many in these communities work on their own or on isolated properties over an hour’s drive from a hospital emergency department and so rely on family or neighbours as a first response in case of an accident or medical emergency.

Last year in Towong and Alpine shire, more than 150 community members received free first aid training that enabled them to provide CPR, use a defibrillator, deal with accidents and snake bites until an ambulance or medical help arrived.

The course also provided an opportunity for the community to get together over lunch and meet with Red

Cross bushfire recovery staff and local volunteers and now the free course are coming to Indigo Shire.

“Like with all training courses, everyone is a bit shy and retiring when they first turn up,” Jessica Davison, the Red Cross team leader recovery and resilience at Red Cross North East Victoria.

“The participants can be a very mixed bunch, farmers, their workers, local business people, retirees, school students, CFA and CWA members.

“After taking turns being patients and practising on the CPR dummies, they all seem to get on like a house on fire and there’s lots of laughter.

“Not only do they walk away with useful skills that may save a life, but they’ve had a chance to spend a day together and connect with others in their local community.

“They also get a chance to share their recovery experiences and get any support they may need from Red Cross and other community organisations.”

What’s in season?

By PETER KENYON LOCAL food culturalist and storyteller Peter Kenyon explores North East food culture and how it supports strong, sustainable, confident rural communities.

It’s an easy question: what’s in season? But really, what are we asking?

From the eater’s perspective, ‘what’s in season?’ usually means ‘When is the item being picked and ready for me to eat?’

For producers of food, however, the entire year is a cycle of seasons.

For orchardists, picking the crop is just one of them.

Other seasonal activities include fertilising, pruning, spraying, soil testing, weeding and mulching, machinery maintenance, pollination, rolling out the nets for crop protection and engaging seasonal workers.

Sometimes there’s also taking scions to graft and rework an orchard’s trees.

In many production areas like Shepparton and Sunraysia with larger tree plantings, engaging beehives to arrive in perfect time for blossom break and pollination is necessary.

For vegetable growers there’s seed sowing, potting up seedlings, planting out, watering, feeding, mulching and maintaining oversight during the growing phase before harvesting.

For many growers of heirloom crops, carefully allowing seeds to ripen and collecting these for next season are also part of the annual cycle.

Eggs, meat production, seafood, olive oils, honey, wild mushroom harvesting, wine and cider-making operate to, or are also influenced by seasonality.

Those producing foods and drinks from fresh ingredients are, as a result, seasonal as well, adding to our rich food culture, bringing interest and diversity to what we eat.

The eater’s reward may be the harvest but there’s always much more to consider when you look at our beautiful landscape and ask: “What’s in season?”

of CFA members during the 2019-2020 bushfire crisis,” she said.

“It is a great honour to receive this medal and I hope it goes a small way to thanking our members for their service.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan spoke of his pride for the CFA members’ efforts.

“The 2019/2020 fires devastated East Gippsland and the North East of Victoria,” he said.

“But from that crisis arose the most remarkable human spirit of generosity and ‘lending a hand’.

“Our medal recipients have exemplified that spirit, and I am incredibly proud of each and every one of them.

“Whether they joined a firefighting strike team, worked in an Incident Control Centre or provided other assistance to affected communities - every contribution was valuable made a real difference.

Kerferd Oration 20 year milestone celebrated in style last Friday

By CORAL COOKSLEY THE Quercus Oregon Hall buzzed last Friday night as 35 guests, including three past Kerferd Oration orators with this year’s orator and George Kerferd’s great grandson, celebrated a 20 year milestone with an anniversary dinner.

Past orators Monash University Professor John Thwaites, former Indi federal politician Cathy McGowan, Dr Simon Longstaff, 2022 orator Peter Hutton and George Kerferd’s great grandson Ray Kirkwood attended the evening.

Kerferd Oration founder Beechworth’s Joan Simms was unable to be present but addressed guests with a video presentation where she said the idea of an annual oration came in response to a call to the community by Indigo Shire for ways to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the naming of Beechworth.

Ms Simms chose three ongoing examples of outcomes from the orations to share with guests.

She said prior to the John Thwaites oration in 2007, there had been five presentations by local scientists attended by 265 locals, and then in 2008 for the Tim Flannery oration, a group ‘blogged’ for

three months every Saturday morning.

“These two actions, some 15 years ago, led to formation of Beechworth Sustainability that merged with Beechworth Landcare to form a thriving Beechworth Urban Landcare and Sustainability,” she said.

Another had been from the 2009 oration by the Rev Tim Costello with the formation of Indigo University of the Third Age which responds to lifelong learning needs of the community’s ageing population.

Ms Simms said the 2012 oration delivered jointly by the late Bill Wilson and the late Tim Fischer revealed the story of Sir Isaac Isaacs 47 years of connection to Indigo Shire.

Ms McGowan’s second oration in 2020 - she had given one in 2006 - saw the emergence of Indigo Shire Youth for Climate Action.

Kerferd Oration committee chair Jess Oldmeadow said Ms Simms had the most wonderful idea to begin the oration.

Mr Kirkwood, who joined the committee this year, said the oration had made him very aware of his great grandfather’s contribution to Beechworth and then to Victoria as the premier which he has been able to share with relatives.

“The oration has been an event that has really drawn the community together with engaging community conversations,” he said.

“It’s been a wonderful model where the list of prominent, diverse presenters has over the years been astonish-

ing.

“I love being involved with it and don’t know of any other community that does something like this.”

With an amazing decorated hall for the evening by local creative James Tool, Ms Oldmeadow said the dinner had been held in the Oregon Hall where many Quercus community events took place.

Oration committee member Jude Doughty said the warm, engaging special evening had been proudly celebrated.

Radical approach needed to improve education outcomes Educator delivers this yyear’s Kerferd f O Oration marking g its 20 yyear anniversaryy

By CORAL COOKSLEY AN educational leader and status quo challenger renowned both nationally and internationally for his innovative work has advocated for an education system where students take control of their learning.

Peter Hutton delivered this year’s annual George Briscoe Kerferd Oration titled Australian Education: How did we get here and where are we going? marking its 20th anniversary held at the George Kerferd Hotel on Sunday, which was also live streamed titled” Supporting education leaders to build innovative and adaptive cultures in schools as creative learning environments for all young people, he told an audience of more than 200 people, and 120 who tuned in online, that students do not fail in education - the education system fails them by failing to take students’ own unique needs into account.

“We need to convince them of that, because the whole of society tells them that it’s the other way around,” he said.

The education maverick led the audience on a journey that stretched from the history of education that contributed to a rigid school system with its hierarchies to the need for different thinking about education delivery, its importance and the need for opportunities for positive change.

He said the traditional education system had been developed for a very narrow skill set.

“If people are aware of how schooling developed, then it’s easier to reject the parts that aren’t working and design new systems,” he said.

A former principal, Mr Hutton had led one of the most innovative government secondary schools in Australia - Templestowe College in Victoria for eight years when student numbers increased from 286 to 1150 with all young people having their own individualised learning plan supported by parents.

Among innovations at the college, year levels no longer exist as Mr Hutton said research showed that where a class has not been streamed on the basis of ability, there is a six year academic range.

Other creative activities included students running their own entrepreneurial businesses and being paid for jobs around the college including as tutors.

Four years ago, Mr Hutton co-founded Future Schools that now supports 100 of the most innovative schools across Australia and 10 of the most innovative schools in the world.

The educator also spoke about the OECD Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) with Australia’s significantly dropped position in the world.

He said year 9 student engagement in Australian schools over the last decade had dropped more than any other country in the OECD, other than France in the Slovak Republic.

Mr Hutton also said out of the 38 measured OECD countries, Australia rated third worst for equity.

The educator challenged

a flawed ATAR ranking system for university entry while advocating life experience after secondary school before taking up university studies as mature-age students.

With the slow rate of change from traditional learning, he said technology could be a saviour with its opportunities for global learning connections while machine intelligence for assessment to track rate of course progress would replace inefficient and inaccurate exams.

With businesses supporting more progressive forms of education such as entrepreneurship in schools programs, Mr Hutton said they needed young people to have creativity, problem solving ability and confidence.

Mr Hutton said he hoped parents with young children had been given an idea from his oration not to just accept what the school system says blindly, and to support their own young people to have a fantastic and meaningful education.

Experienced educator Chiltern’s Céline Forster inspired by Pete’s talk said she wanted to be part of the educational system’s change.

“I want to be able help facilitate this with other teachers,” she said.

Kerferd Oration committee chair, Jess Oldmeadow, said Peter really sparked people’s desire to create immediate change.

She said the valued community event promotes discussion on important and relevant topics.

“Having an orator draw on a national or global issue and make it relevant to a small local community is an exceptional opportunity,” she said.

Event MC Peter Sacco from the Australian Centre for Rural Entrepreneurship gave a very special thanks to George Kerferd Oration founder, Beechworth’s Joan Sims.

“Your leadership, forward thinking and commitment to discussion in Beechworth has been instrumental in this event’s ongoing success for the last 20 years,” he said.

“The Oration has always set out to challenge our collective thinking about issues in our community, and for us to consider what we can do to make a difference to the things we care

about here in Beechworth and the world beyond.”

Mr Sacco had welcomed special guests and past orators Cathy McGowan, and former Victorian Deputy Premier Professor John Thwaites, and George Kerferd descendant and long time Oration supporter, Ray Kirkwood, as well as around 30 other descendants who travelled from around Australia to mark the event’s 20th anniversary.

Ray Kirkwood’s nephew, Elliott Kirkwood, presented the George Kerferd Oration Medal to Mr Hutton.

The event attracted an audience from Beechworth and surrounds, regionally and interstate with some from overseas countries.

By CORAL COOKSLEY A STANLEY fair food advocate will on Sunday’s deliver an informative talk at Café Scientifique about sharing knowledge for a healthy lifestyle built around getting back to the simple things in life, being self-sufficient and sustainable to help the planet.

Black Barn Farm’s Jade Miles said having jjust returned from a six week book tour in America, she is delighted to be back in her hometown to talk about futuresteading.

“I hope that people take away a sense of urgency to have an impact through their daily decisions,” she said.

“I look forward to a community conversation about the importance of building ritual, creating patterns that bond us to place and to share the simple, tangible ways in which we can all live like tomorrow matters.”

Jade and her partner Charlie Showers run Black Barn Farm in Stanley - an orcharding and nursery business entrenched in the com-

munity, regenerative in its practises, diverse in its fruit varieties and the first step, they believe, in building a localised fair food system.

MDHAS founder Christine Cansfield-Smith said Jade, who had also founded the Beechworth Food Co-op, has a broad range of practical skills to offer advice and information to the community and to those in the small agricultural sector.

“Her book ‘Futuresteading’ is a practical and inspirational guide to living in a way that values tomorrow with a slower, simpler, steadier existence that is healthier for you, your home, and the environment,” she said.

Hosted by Mayday Hills Art Society at its premises located in Kurrajong Way, the event starts at 3pm with a gold coin donation entry fee.

Men’s health access a concern for Ross

ROSS Gordon was born in Box Hill and moved around the country until 2019, settling in Stanley shortly before the 2019/2020 bushfires.

He found the people and the location really resonated with him, and has a sense of belonging in the community he now lives in.

What’s your job?

I am a self-employed electrician, and was working with the local Stanley community before taking on a role working interstate.

What brought you to this role?

I wanted to be an electrician for as long as I can remember. I’ve worked in a number of capacities from high rise construction and power stations to steam boilers and sheep feed mills.

What do you love about your job?

I find the work challenging and rewarding, and I get to learn a lot of new skills through being exposed to different industries.

What do you do in the community?

I am a volunteer firefighter with the CFA, Stanley Brigade.

I have been a member since 2019 and found my feet quickly during active service in the 19/20 fires.

I also help Stanley Rural Community Inc (SRCI) - a not-for-profit organisation, which advocates for our rural village and its community - whenever possible and am an active member of Landcare.

Although work takes me away from Stanley, I try to be as involved as much as possible in community events when I am here.

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

I am concerned about quality medical access for men’s health - both physical and mental.

It’s a hot topic, but getting access to a doctor at the time it’s needed is an issue here in the country.

Wait times are excessive and we men tend to

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

I’d like to see the whole health system overhauled, with a focus on funding and education for support in rural areas.

Awareness is one thing, but taking steps to resolve the issue is another.

International instability is something that sits uneasy with me.

The situation between China, Russia and the rest of the world has me wondering at the future for our children, and what impact it will have on our social and economic freedoms.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

I’d love to bring my father here - I know he’d appreciate working his way through the content of the Stanley Athenaeum.

He has a real passion for history and because his father, who was born in Corryong, spent a lot of time here when he was young, it would help give him that sense of connection we all like to have.

What book are you reading?

I have a pile of four wheel drive magazines and North East Victorian maps on my bedside table waiting for me to work my way through when I am not working such long hours.

Bushrangers make it six wins in a row

Quiet week on the sandgreens THERE was not much competition golf played in the last week at the Beechworth Golf Club.

Last Wednesday a small field on women fronted up for a Stableford event.

The going must have been tough as Debbie Tully returned the best score with 29 points, Nada Guyatt was given the runner up prize with just 24 points on a countback from Gail Smith.

It was also good to see new member Jaqui Cato out having a game too.

There was no competition on Sunday due to the low numbers, but a couple of members enjoyed going around on the soon to be opened newly designed nine hole

par 3 course, which we will be having an opening day for in the near future.

On Sunday a few members travelled to Culcairn for their tournament.

A great feed and company along with a well presented course was what was offered up with only Dylan Pool returning home with a prize coming second in the A Grade Scratch event.

This Sunday if the weather allows will be the August Monthly Medal; 11:30am for 12noon hit off.

Wednesday golf is 8:30am for 9am hit off.

Cartledge said he expects a fully fired up Hawks team on the weekend and he hopes the Bushrangers can learn from their 39 point loss earlier in the year.

“We’ll try use that to our advantage, they’re going to be relatively fired up and we like to run pretty hot ourselves,” he said.

“I think we’re going to go out and play our brand of footy to the best that we can and hopefully a few frustrations for them might continue this week.”

Bushrangers make it six wins in a row

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN THE Bushrangers continued their triumphant march to finals with a statement 35 point away win over Barnawartha on Saturday.

The win made it six on the trot for the Bushrangers as they went a game clear of third with the win and are

now a realistic chance at a shot at the minor premiership.

Coach Tom Cartledge said the team have been after a quality away win for some time.

“We were rapt,” he said.

“We hadn’t really nailed a good side away from home and it’s something we’ve been

working on for a while so to do that we were certainly happy with the result.”

In what was a low scoring contest for the first three quarters, the game opened up in the last which saw plenty of goals going through at both ends.

Cartledge complimented his side’s commitment to fit-

ness over the past month, setting aside 10-15 minutes of training dedicated to maintaining the fitness of his players, which proved dividends on Saturday.

“We’ve been working hard on our fitness, for the last four weeks we’ve thrown in an extra fitness block and I think that’s been helpful,” he said.

“Certainly not wearing out the blokes or anything, just getting some longer runs in just to make sure that aerobic capacity is still up there because in winter it’s pretty easy for it to die off and fall into a bit of a lull.

“We’ve had a couple of lesser games lately so we did some running during the

week and we’ve been able to carry that on and that helped us on the weekend.”

Cartledge said he will use the win as a great confidence booster for his team if they happen to face Barnawartha again in finals, but all focus is currently onto Kiewa-Sandy Creek.
