Battery power takes next step BATTERY storage options for generation, distribution and ownership of renewable energy by the local community is at the heart of an event being held in Beechworth this month. Organised by volunteer organisation Totally Renewable Beechworth (TRB) in partnership with social enterprise and community-owned Indigo Power, the session ‘Battery Fever’ has a line-up of industry experts including two Australian National Uni-

versity (ANU) battery storage researchers. Independent MP for Indi, Dr Helen Haines will also be a guest speaker outlining Local Power Plan 1 with Indigo Power as a local hub funded to support local energy groups in providing solutions. Delayed by COVID lockdowns and restrictions, the

event is the next step as TRB powers ahead in seeking community consultation by providing people with the latest information on battery storage technology and developments to further explore the town’s feasibility in a quest to generate its own power. TRB is working towards Beechworth and areas within the 3747 postcode which includes Stanley to be completely powered by renewable energy by the year 2030 with community uptake.

TRB’s Sue Gold said local communities around the nation have seized the chance created by a Federal government void to generate and distribute their own power with direct financial benefit to their own communities. “As a community we can have a say on who owns the technology and who gains the profit from its use,” she said. “We don’t need large multi-national organasations to do that when we can actually localise genera-

tion of our power.” Following TRB’s ‘Powerful Beechworth project’ where renewable energy plans had been developed from community consultation, TRB’s next focus had been outlined to explore battery storage. Ms Gold said the event will focus on how community can use the ‘latest and greatest’ in battery technology to support the shift to renewables as well as the economic and social benefits. ■ Continued page 2

+HOSLQJ \RX VWD\ FRQQHFWHG Since I was elected in 2019, Indi has won 40 per cent of mobile phone towers funded under the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program in Victoria. Indi is the most successful in Victoria when it comes to securing federal funding for Mobile Black Spot towers, and the third most successful electorate in the country. But the job is not finished. Mobile black spots are dangerous and I am committed to securing funding to fix the remaining issues with poor mobile reception in Indi.
