WINTER WONDERLAND AS SNOW FALLS: As snow fell on the first day of winter in Beechworth on Wednesday and over the last two days at Stanley, a pretty winter wonderland was created and generated plenty of excitement for locals with many posts on social media. The snow may not last for long, however, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting showers and rain over the coming days with temperature barely making double figures over the next week. ticipated in the workshop that covered traditional burning principles and benefits with a demonstration in Upper Springditch too. Albury’s Indigenous elder Uncle Phil Murray from the Dhudhuroa people said be-

ing back on country with cool burns and working together with organisations such as the CFA, Landcare groups and DELWP is good for bushfire management and country. He said cool burns meant fuel reduction as well as regeneration of plants and bush tucker. Deputy group officer Bogong Group of Brigades

and Stanley Landcare member Michael Nuck, said the local brigade had been keen to learn about cultural burning from elders. “It’s about elimination of weeds, healthy revegetation and is important for fuel reduction,” he said. “We’ll be recording the impact of traditional burning on the weeds and regen-

eration of such plants as native grasses and orchids over the next couple of years and have a multi-prong attack for cool burns over sections across the Stanley Plateau,” he said. “It’s a working relationship between Landcare, CFA and DELWP where we’re all on the same page and working with the community.” ■ Continued page 2
