Families can participate in the Easter egg hunt on Sun-

day, and thrill-seekers can enjoy the rides and attractions at Gardner Amusements set up in the Police Paddocks.

Anticipating a bigger and better event than before, organisers estimate a crowd of up to 15,000 people to hit town.

Coinciding with the Easter long weekend last year, the festival played a role in attracting $1.98m investment in the local region from visitors and locals, 101 per cent more than the coinciding period in 2019.

Chiltern exhibition set to pop up

By CORAL COOKSLEY CHILTERN artists will show off diverse talents with an array of creations in a pop-up art exhibition being held in the Old Courthouse next week.

Courthouse committee member and organiser Bill Hotson said an artists collective had been created since last year’s exhibition with a mix of around 30 professional and non-professional artists.

“The collective is very keen to showcase their work,” he said.

“We have some really top line artists”.

Works stretch across a variety of mediums including paintings, photography and sculpture.

Mr Hotson said the event added to the town’s attrac-

tions, drawing visitors from around the region and beyond where they also had a chance to explore Chiltern.

A grand opening takes place at 7pm on Friday, March 10 with a $5 entry fee.

Works will be displayed on Saturday and Sunday after the opening from 10am to 4pm while Monday’s hours are 10am to 2pm with a gold coin entry fee on all days.

Run by the courthouse committee of management, Mr Hotson said among other events planned for the year will be a Ned Kelly play with actors from the Chiltern Lions Amateur Performers (CLAP).

Café Scientifique talk on tonight

By CORAL COOKSLEY A FOOD process engineer and project manager will tonight deliver an informative talk about food process engineering at the Café Scientifique session hosted by Mayday Hills Art Society (MDHAS) with a 5pm start.

“I’m really excited about the talk where there will also be a focus on problem solving as well as protecting internet Protocol (IP) addresses,” presenter Neil Funston said.

“I will also be touching on my

work undertaken in the community with all the not for profit (NFP) organisations and why I think that is important in my life but also why it is important for the community.

“I hope those in the room will be inspired to take up something for their community too.”

Among Mr Funston’s community work is being a BeyondHousing director, where he helps homeless people with social housing as well as as a White Ribbon ambassador working to change social values to alleviate

violence against women.

EVERY Victorian will be able to access a new round of the $250 Power Saving Bonus from March 24.

People will be able to access the payment people when they visit the Labor Government’s bill-busting Victorian Energy Compare website.

Since the current round of the $250 Power Saving Bonus launched on July 1, 2022, more than 1.7 million households have received the cost of living support.

Premier Daniel Andrews said Victoria has cut its emissions by more than any other state, tripled the amount of renewable energy and created thousands of clean energy jobs - but there is more to do, and that is why we have set a renewable energy target of 95 per cent by 2035.

He said to help meet this target, the government is reviving the State Electricity Commission and bringing back government owned renewable energy to drive down energy costs and help create 59,000 jobs.

“We know Victorians are doing it tough with the rising cost of energy that’s why we’ll have a new round of the $250 Power Saving Bonus, putting money in families’ pockets and making sure they’re on the best deal,” he said.

“We’re driving down bills and putting power back in Victorians’ hands by bringing back the SEC and delivering cheap, clean, sustainable energy.”

The Labor Government is also reducing cost of living stress through the new Energy Assistance Program, a free service providing energy consumers experiencing hardship with one-on-one assistance.

The Energy Assistance Program is a $3.75 million initiative that will help Victorians struggling with power bills to navigate the energy market, apply for eligible grants and concessions, find and switch to better offers and address billing errors.

For those without internet access, over-the-phone and in-person support is available through one of our Community Outreach Partners, including Brotherhood of St Laurence, Ethnic Community Council Victoria, Good Shepherd, State Trustees and hundreds of Neighbourhood Houses across Victoria.

Victorians can also save on their household energy bills through the $1.3 billion Solar Homes Program by installing solar PV systems, batteries, solar hot water and heat pumps.

Leadership award for young local resident

Planned burn set for gorge

By CORAL COOKSLEY SKILLS and knowledge gained in an internationally run leadership program has been put into practice by a Beechworth participant in the workplace.

Beechworth’s Bakery front of house manager Laura Bell recently joined 22 young people from around the state in the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) held at Drummond North’s Doxa Malmsbury Camp.

A chance for professional and personal development for 18 to 30-year-olds, the program started in Brisbane in the 1950s and now runs in more than 500 locations around the world supported by Rotary International.

Beechworth Bakery owners had nominated Laura to the Beechworth Rotary Club where Laura had been a successful applicant.

A variety of challenging situations helped course participants gain leadership and communication skills.

“You’re placed in situations which really test what you’re doing and how you manage that,” Laura said.

Among challenges had been the RYLA team hosting a local Rotary Club dinner with a presentation, where Laura’s peers electing her to be the project manager had thrown her into a leadership role straightaway.

“We had to come up with a challenge for ourselves, how we were going to achieve the goal and how we wanted our peers to support us to get there and I had to take a leap of faith,” Laura said.

Participants learned about different management styles and undertook bonding exercises bringing the team together too.

“RYLA organisers gave us what they called a toolbox for skills learned to take into the real world and the workplace,” she said.

“This could include community work , in volunteer programs and with families and friends as well.

“It was a very positive experience, an amazing opportunity and magical experience.

“I’ve made new friends too, it was a lot of fun and I loved it.”

Beechworth Bakery co-owner and manager Jo Mattassoni said Rotary offered a great opportunity for likeminded young people in the leadership program to bring skills learned back to the workplace.

“Careerwise, I’m a big believer that you don’t just work in a business, it’s what you can do outside of the business building up skills

both personally and professionally,” she said.

Beechworth Rotary Club president Larry Goldsworthy said Rotary sees the value in developing youth and helping them to reach their full potential.

“The program gives participant the chance to broaden their horizons, help develop their leadership skills with a network of like-minded people and it’s fun too,” he said.

“The program develops our young leaders who are our future, and every opportunity to help them enhance their skills and knowledge is a return on investment for the entire community.”

Support incoming for sustainable projects

By RYAN MALCOLM ALMOST $17,000 in council funding is set to support local organisations as they seek to improve their approach to sustainability and reduce emissions in the coming months.

Six projects from three different localities were given clearance to share in $16,852.80 at Tuesday’s Indigo Shire council meeting, as part of the 2022/23 Community Sustainability Grants program.

Only one application, which called for a $9000 investment into

a 16.5kW battery for the Osbornes Flat Community Centre, was knocked back by council, which cited a lack of contact between the organisation and council to discuss viability and the lack of confirmation around a co-contribution to deliver the project.

Rutherglen Historical Society were marked the major winners of the initiative, with $5000 granted to fund a 2.9kW solar system to reduce CO2 emissions and the organisation’s financial burden.

Councillors also backed a $4884 investment in to Beechworth Urban Landcare and Sustainability,

as the group aims to recover areas of the Beechworth Bush Botanic Gardens impacted by flooding late last year.

Projects at the Beechworth Community Early Learning Centre ($3968.80), Totally Renewable Beechworth ($1000), Totally Renewable Indigo North ($1000) and Kiewa catchment Landcare Groups ($1000) were also green-lit.

Moving support for the iniative, Cr Peter Croucher said the grants program was a valuable addition to the local community.

FOREST Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) is preparing to undertake a planned burn in the Beechworth Gorge this autumn when weather conditions are suitable.

The 24.5 hectare fuel reduction burn aims to reduce the risk to the Beechworth and surrounding community from future bushfires.

Acting FFMVic Ovens district manager, Mick Prendergast, said more detailed notifications will be provided to the community once the burn is scheduled in the coming weeks.

“The burn will be undertaken with the support of the Country Fire Authority Beechworth,” he said.

“The Beechworth Gorge Road planned burn is one of 30 burns scheduled for the Ovens District if forest and weather conditions are suitable.

“FFMVic and CFA crews conduct planned burns to reduce the size, intensity and impact of future bushfires to communities and the environment.

“FFMVic works closely with the Bureau of Meteorology to assess weather conditions - such as humidity, temperature and wind speed and we will only carry out burns when it is safe to do so.”

According to FFMVic deputy chief fire officer, Jarrod Hayse, planned burns in the local region were vital in keeping bushfires small and mitigating the risk they pose to communities.

“Reducing ground level fuels such as leaves, sticks, and fallen branches means fires are less intense and slower to spread, making it more likely that firefighters can keep bushfires small and contained before they pose a risk to communities,” he said.

“The wetter and cooler conditions this summer will mean communities can expect to see firefighters conducting planned burns if the weather and forest conditions are suitable and it is safe to do so.

“We know that smoke from planned burns may concern some people, and we work with communities and stakeholders to reduce smoke impacts as much as possible.

“However, it’s important that crews take every opportunity to reduce fuel loads while conditions are suitable.”

Busking to return Country star to wow to Rutherglen Yackandandah crowds TRAVELLING all the way from Boise in the American northwest, country musician Eilen Jewell will treat audiences at Yackandandah’s Star Hotel this weekend, in a major boon for the local music scene.

Sunday’s performance will be the musician’s first in Yackandandah, with the show a late addition as part of her first Australian tour since 2018, after a planned tour in 2020 was postponed as a result of COVID lockdowns.

Renowned as the ‘queen of the minor key’, Ms Jewell’s penchant for writing sad songs while blending country, folk and 1960s rock ‘n’ roll first saw her tour Australian shores in 2010, on the back of her third album ‘Sea of Tears’.

By CORAL COOKSLEY RUTHERGLEN is set to have buskers from all over Australia taking to historic Main Street on May 13 this year, when the regional heat of the Australian National Busking Championships (ANBC) returns to the town.

Destination Rutherglen made the exciting announced on Tuesday at James and Co Wine Bar where chair Damien Adams said buskers will compete in a substantial prize pool of more than $10,000.

“Rutherglen hosted its first ever Regional Heat of the Championships last year that drew 2,000 visitors to the town,” he said.

Last year’s winners Jack Gregory in the Primary category and Zac Spalding in the Secondary category were among performers at Tuesday’s launch.

Both musicians went to the National Championship in Cooma where Zac took out first place and Jack scored third place in their respective categories.

The ANBC began in Cooma 12 years ago and now attracts national attention in 10 provincial heats around Australia prior to the grand final in Cooma held in November.

Her most recent tour comes belatedly on the back of her latest album ‘Gypsy’ which was released in 2019.

Heavily inspired by revolutionary country artist Loretta Lynn, Ms Jewell’s 2010 album ‘Butcher Hollar A Tribute To Loretta Lynn’ recognised the influence of the iconic 1960s/70s singer/songwriter, as Ms Jewell re-recorded an entire album of Ms Lynn’s hits.

Her show at the Brunswick Ballroom on March 12 will pay tribute to Ms Lynn, who passed away late last year aged 90.

Mr Adams said in the past 12 years the ANBC had held 55 Busking competitions and awarded more than $333,000 in cash prizes to buskers from around the nation.

“The focus is community with the ANBC providing encouragement, mentoring and confidence building for performers,” he said.

In Rutherglen’s 2022 inaugural event, some 45 buskers from near and far brought live music and entertainment to the town where $10,000 in cash prizes had been won.

Mr Adams said buskers as

soloists, duos and groups of all ages play up to three x 30 minute sets at busking stations.

Judges award excellence in major categories and announce results at the Prize Winner’s Concert later in the day.

The event includes a People’s Choice Award that sees the public voting for their favourite buskers via busker tokens.

Cash prizes will be awarded across a range of categories as well as winners representing Rutherglen at the Cooma National Finals in November.

Ongoing support for Atauro Island

By CORAL COOKSLEY ONGOING sponsorship of tertiary education for seven Atauro Island students is among ongoing projects this year for the Atauro Island Friendship group, with its membership from around Indigo Shire.

Some 17 young people have gone through the scholarship student program since the group’s inception.

The friendship volunteer group has stood the test of time for 15 years in helping to improve the lives of inhabitants on Timor-Leste’s 140-sqkm island.

At its first committee meeting for this year held last week in Beechworth, members outlined projects

to be undertaken this year.

The group’s chair Mark Verbaken said up to seven composting toilets which had previously been interrupted

by COVID were slated to be completed.

He said some committee members would be visiting the Atauro Island to give their friends face-to-face support as well.

Mr Verbaken said year five students in 22 primary schools around the shire helped fundraise for Atauro Island projects, as part of a youth ambassadors leadership program run by Indigo Shire Council.

Students choose a charity and fundraise, where half of the funds are donated to the Atauro Island Friendship group.

‘Patch to Patch’ on tomorrow

By CORAL COOKSLEY ‘PATCH to Patch’ kicks off tomorrow as part of the local food co-op’s ‘Sow It and Grow It’ program, where garden produce lovers have a chance to explore a variety of local gardens around the area for inspiration.

The joint event between Beechworth Food Co-Op (BFC) and Beechworth Urban Landcare and Sustainability (BULS) is supported with an Indigo Shire Council community events grant.

Co-Op president Fiona Wigg said tips and advice will be aplenty on how to grow fruit and vegetables in backyards.

The first activity on the ‘Sow It and Grow It’ program agenda was last week’s preserving session held at Quercus Beechworth’s Oregon Hall with presenters Charlie and Fay Robinson from Fat Goose Farm in Beechworth.

“Charlie and Fay delivered informative talks on the need to grow and preserve food in this time of rising costs,” Fiona said.

“They also emphasised reconnecting with the earth is good for mental health.

Fiona said some people in the audience with no experience with preserving food had been encouraged to have a go.

Local resident Melanie Seabornat attended the talk, and said she regularly makes jams, chutneys and bottled fruit.

Finding the session informative and interesting, Melanie said she had been inspired to experiment more with her preserving techniques.

“The sharing of knowledge was invaluable,” she said.

FLICS celebrates stars of the silver screen

CLOSE to 50 Australian classic film lovers enjoyed a good old fashioned movie night at Chiltern’s National Trust-listed Star Theatre on Saturday night, which opened for the first of its shows this year.

The town’s Lois Hotson has been running the nights with Australian classics since 1999 and now runs them on behalf of Film Lions International Chiltern Society (FLICS).

Cost of tickets includes a dinner held in the historic ‘stables’ behind the theatre dished up by hardworking Lions Club volunteers.

“At different times we have guest speakers, and had Dean Murphy who directed Strange Bedfellows with Paul Hogan (2004) filmed in Yackandandah, who spoke at one,” she said.

Lois said the late Australian actor and singer Maggie Fitzgibbon, who had lived her later years in Wahgunyah, had been another too.

“The film nights bring people together where they can talk about the films as well,” Lois said.

“It’s wonderful for the community and that we have this theatre full of character.’’

“I’ve been to a couple of these film nights and they’re great and it connects communities,” she said.

Chiltern’s Bill Hotson said

it has been great to see a good crowd where there had been some new faces too.

“Often the Aussie movies haven’t been seen for a long while and it’s good to rekindle memories as well as having the background of the movies explained beforehand,” he said.

“Lois does a of research and I think people appreciate it.”

The next movie nights are slated for March 18, April 29, August 26, September 23 and November 25.

Organ yields rare notes BEECHWORTH’S Anglican Christ Church celebrates Women Composer Sunday on March 5 when music director Sandra Williams plays two little-known organ works by an early twentieth century French composer.

Ms Williams will perform Mélanie Hélène Bonis’ pastorale in G on the church’s heritage-listed William Anderson pipe organ to introduce the 10am morning service, and toccata in G minor to end it, honouring women composers ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8.

Volunteers from the United Kingdom’s Society of Women Organists and Royal College of Organists worked together during the COVID lockdowns in 2020 to create a repertoire list of organ and liturgical compositions by women.

They identified 300 works ranging from a doxology by Kassia, an Eastern Empire composer in what is now Greece and Turkey in the early ninth century, to music by Armenian Karina Arakelyan, born in 1994, and seven Australians.

Inspired by what they found, including many compositions largely unknown today, the society and college launched Women Composer Sunday on March 7, 2021, encouraging organists at regular church and cathedral services across the world to play works from the list, and post recordings of their performances on social media.

Ms Williams has led music at Christ Church from the organ keyboard for 15 years, continuing a tradition started by Frances Manton who played the colonial-built instrument from 1887, when it was installed, until 1892 or 1893.

Her daughter, also named Frances, followed her, playing the organ for 50 years until her death in 1944.

Their commitment and skills were memorialised in 1946 with a publicly subscribed window depicting Cecilia, patron saint of music and musicians, created by Melbourne stained glass makers Mathieson and Gibson.

The two Mel Bonis pieces to be played by Ms Williams on Sunday were published in 1933, four years before the composer died.

Bishop brings flock together A DIOCESAN workshop led by Wangaratta Anglican Bishop Clarence Bester attracted 104 parish representatives and church officers to Wangaratta’s Cathedral College last weekend.

Church wardens, parish councillors and treasurers from the diocese’s 23 parishes were called together by the bishop to discuss their responsibilities, administrative, financial and insurance issues and to hear about the agenda for the next synod - the annual ‘parliament’ of the diocese.

Each parish, from Picola in the west to Corryong in the east and Kilmore in the south, elects representatives to attend the synod and, together with parish and diocesan clergy and administrative officers, consider and decide policy, management issues and church legislation.

The synod also elects boards to advise the bishop and consider clergy appointments, a tribunal, and diocesan delegates to the Anglican Church of Australia national synod.

Bishop Bester said the workshop was valuable and he was grateful for the strong, positive engagement of parish representatives, church officers including Archdeacon Neil Hicks, registrar Julie Torpey, treasurer Norm Kenny, legal advocate Rachel Ellyard, and insurance and risk management adviser Neil Bull.

“There is no diocese without parishes and no parishes without parishioners,” the bishop said.

“We’re all in this together and your participation is vital for the wellbeing and good governance of our diocese.”

This week marked the start of Bishop Bester’s fourth year as eleventh bishop of Wangaratta.

Hopes for “final nail in coffin” for duck shooting

By STEVE KELLY ANIMAL Justice Party MP Georgie Purcell is hoping an inquiry into native bird hunting will be the death knell for duck shooting in Victoria.

Minister for Outdoor Recreation Sonya Kilkenny announced last week that the Labor Government will move to establish a Legislative Council Select Committee to examine recreational native bird hunting in Victoria.

The committee will have wide-ranging terms of reference, including the operation of the annual recreational native bird hunting seasons, arrangements in other Australian jurisdictions, their environmental sustainability and impact on amenity, and their social and economic impact.

However the MP for Northern Victoria said this select committee should have been established years ago.

“It will be too late for the thousands of birds that will be killed this season, along with the habitat destruction that the shooters often leave behind,” Ms Purcell said.

“However, I will be doing everything I possibly can to be a member, and ensure this inquiry is the final nail in the coffin.”

“Restricted length and bag limits mean nothing when

shooters have proven themselves time and time again to be lawless,” Ms Purcell said.

“The premier has just committed to another year of carnage and cruelty on our wetlands and once again volunteers will be forced to clean up the mess.

“The government had all the information available to them to do the right thing, and they know that the majority of Victorians strongly oppose duck shooting.”

Public hearings will be held by the committee to hear from hunting associations, animal welfare groups, and regional communities during the consultation period.

A motion to establish the committee will be moved by the government in the Legislative Council during the next sitting week (from March 7), and subject to its passage, a final report will be due to be tabled by August 31, 2023.

Resilience boost for local water, sewage systems COMMUNITY water and sewer systems across North East Victoria are now more resilient to the growing impacts of climate change and natural disasters.

North East Water has increased the options of using off-grid power supplies at sites during or after times of bushfire, drought, flood, heatwaves and storms thanks to an $800,000 Victorian Government grant.

John Day, general manager environment, systems and operations, said ‘behind the meter’ power systems will help keep water and sewer infrastructure operating in emergency situations.

“The project has seen the installation of several fixed generators, solar and battery systems, and the purchase of a fleet of mobile generators”, he said.

“It’s also allowed us to upgrade our operating systems, so they work smarter and more efficiently when alternate power is being used.

“Townships that benefit the most include Myrtleford, Beechworth, Benalla, Dartmouth, Tallangatta and Walwa, although the fleet of mobile generators can be used

anywhere in the state if needed.

“The new fixed generator in Benalla has already been used for 24 hours during a recent storm, while our mobile generators were dispatched to help Goulburn Valley Water and Coliban Water during the December floods.”

Mr Day said the project would help protect communities as impact of climate change take hold.

“We’re now seeing real impacts of a changing climate within our local area resulting in an increase in the severity of natural disasters,” he said.

“This project helps us lessen the impact of these events on our services, ensuring minimal disruption to customers.

“We are committed to climate change mitigation, and with operating efficiencies similar those included in this project, our costs are lower which in turn keeps bills affordable for customers.”

Funding for this project was provided from the Victorian Government Repair and Replacement of Essential Water Infrastructure Program as well as $300,000 from North East Water’s capital expenditure program.

Art exhibition hosted in Stanley

By CORAL COOKSLEY LOCAL artists are set to have their works on show at the Stanley Memorial Hall with an official opening being held on Saturday, March 11 at 3pm.

The annual ‘Beyond Bends’ exhibition of fine art creative works includes paintings, drawing, pottery, sculpture, photography and print-making.

Artist and coordinator for the event Janet Sutherland said last year’s successful event

showcased a high standard of technical skill and creative vision.

“Many of the works were sold, to the delight of artists and patrons,” she said.

Ms Sutherland said local artists were busy at work preparing for the unique exhibition.

The exhibition runs from Friday, March 10 to Sunday, March 19 between 11am and 5pm daily with works again for sale this year.

Deb enjoys embracing life-changing experiences DEB Borleis was raised in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, yet always felt a country girl at heart. Deferring university, she embarked on a seven-month backpacking adventure through Europe. Returning to Melbourne, she enjoyed a fulfilling career as a tour planner for Australian Pacific Tours before starting a family and moving to Beechworth 35 years ago.

What have you done workwise?

For six years I was a medical secretary at the Kerferd Clinic psychiatric facility. I was then offered work at the Beechworth Surgery where I spent 17 years as medical receptionist, a job I loved. Above all I enjoyed the contact with the community, being able to offer friendly reassurance and assistance when people came in unwell or vulnerable.

An injury forced early retirement but with that came new opportunities. I completed my counselling diploma, then set off camping around Australia with my friend for 18 months. This was a long-time dream which exceeded all expectations. After a short time home, we headed west again in 2017 and were away for another 18 months.

During this journey we were fortuitously offered three month’s work in Jigalong, a remote indigenous community in Western Australia. This led to another two months working in communities around Marble Bar, also helping run a week-long ‘artist camp’ with elders deep in their desert homeland.

For several months we ran respite trips out of Newman, mainly to Port Hedland and Broome where we took five people at a time in the company troop carrier, providing new experiences and a break from their remote community life. Eight months living among these Martu people offered valuable firsthand insight into some of their culture and everyday challenges. This was such lifeaffirming work.

What do you do in the community?

For three years I have been a keen member of Indigo U3A (University of the Third Age).

Deb Borleis, Beechworth The first two involved many Zoom sessions and I have great admiration for how our U3A people quickly adapted to the ever-changing circumstances from COVID-19 impacts.

I now volunteer as tutor for our weekly art group and love the collaborative learning and sharing, along with the challenge of preparing tutorials. I joined the program planning group and work closely with other volunteers to schedule speakers and courses for our U3A members. I’m really inspired by the wealth of knowledge and interesting people in Beechworth.

Is there an important community issue that you think needs addressing?

Community issues vary over time but a current concern is rental stress, but I feel overall Beechworth has so much to offer its residents.

What do you see as one of the most important current world issues?

I feel strongly about social inequality, especially that caused by conflict and corruption.

We’re all human beings on a fragile planet and need to co-operate and support each other!

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo Shire (past or present), or was already here, who would that be, what would you show them, and why?

I’d love a Beechworth pioneer like James Ingram to return (95 years on) and see his legacy of how the town has developed while its heritage and beauty has been preserved.

What book are you reading?

Recovering from COVID, audiobooks have been my saviour. “Batavia” by Peter FitzSimons is my most recent, feeding my fascination with Australian history.

Cricket coaching course to be held at Beechworth A FREE community cricket coaching course will be hosted at Baarmutha Park, Beechworth on Thursday, March 9.

The course, run by Cricket Victoria Coach Force, is a great chance for members of the community to gain their Community Coaching (level one) accreditation.

Hosted by former Victorian cricketer Megan Pauwels, the free course is largely based around coaching girls but all coaches, parents and players who want to get their level one coaching accreditation are invited to attend.

THE annual Mitta Mountain Rally will return to the Mitta Valley tomorrow, with over 90 entries ready to ride the valley for the seventh time since 2016.

This year it is on March 4, only one week before the Mitta Muster.

It will be the opening round of the Motorsport Australia Till Hino Victorian Rally Championship and the Hoosier Tyres New South Wales Rally Championship, as well as incorporating the Mitta Masters, a rally for classic cars over thirty years old and classic elderly crews.

Overall there will be 80 starters; 34 are entered for the Victorian Championship, 16 for the NSW Championship, 11 for the Mitta Masters, and 22 for the Victorian Club Rally Series event.

Outright victory is likely to be fought out by top seeds Riley Walters/Andrew Crowley in a Subaru and Tim Wilkins/Jim Gleeson in a Mitsubishi, both from NSW and Jamie Pohlner/ Adam Branford also in an Evo 9 from SA. The Victorian challenge will be in the two-wheel drive and come from Adrian Stratford/ Kain Manning in a Toyota Corolla and Brendan Reeves/Kate Raymond in a Datsun 1600.

The Mitta Masters looks to be dominated again as in previous years by the classy classic BDG Ford Escorts, in the hands of previous winners all the way from Ireland, Tom Dermody/ Eoin Moynihan, and former champion Ian Hill/Phil Bonser.

RALLY UP: Over 90 entries of rally car racers are set to head to the Mitta Valley this weekend for the annual Mitta Mountain Rally on March 4.

Local crews include Jason Lennane/Jasmine Lockley in a Honda Civic from Myrtleford, and the two car Wodonga Car World team of Lochy Reed/Lucas Reed in a Ford Fiesta and Thomas West/Steve Dunbar in a Hyundai Excel.

Event sponsor Gordon Douglas is making a return to the sport after many years out of the action in his Ford Escort, accompanied by Will Murphy.

The rally will be based at the Mitta Recreation Reserve, looping out into surrounding forest and shire roads for closed road competitive stages and back to the service park for rest, refresh-

ment and car maintenance.

Starting at 8.30am the first loop will head north in and around the Bullhead Range, while the final loop will head south towards Mt Wills.

Crews will arrive for the finish from 3pm to 6.30pm, when a champagne presentation will be held for the podium finishers.

The day’s activities will conclude with a presentation function at the Mitta Pub on Saturday night, where the event patron, Warwick Smith, a former national and state rally champion, will present trophies, including a cup in his name for the winner of the Mitta Masters event.

“We’re putting the time into the kids who are only going to get better the more they play and the more opportunity they get,” he said.

“We’ve probably relied on a couple off players but in saying that Tim Cogger’s had a sensational, really great back halff of the season.

“He’s got a couple of five-fa’s, and for a 16-year-old that’s great.

“Will Prebble, who’s under 14s, Henry Scalzo’s an under 16, so we’ve got a couple ticking through.

“They take time, we all know that, but you’ve got to give them the opportunity, because if you don’t give them the opportunity, you never know.”

Up against the second-ranked side and legitimate flag contenders Wangaratta Magpies, the Wanderers will look to end their season on a high note.

“It’s a pretty daunting task, they’re going as well as anyone,” Surrey said.

“We’ll just focus on ourselves and what we can control.

“They’ve got bigger fish to fry and really try to hone themselves, they’re probably a little undecided on a couple off things and what they do.

“It’s up to us what we do and what we can get out of it.”

Beechworth Wanderers play Wangaratta Magpies at Norm Minns Oval tomorrow from 1pm.

By NATHAN DE VRIES WHILE their hope of playing finals faded away, Beechworth Wanderers’ A grade squad will hit the ground running and fight out their last game of the season, a two-dayer against Wangaratta Magpies at the Wangaratta

The Wanderers currently sit just one space out of finals contention, but trail Ovens Valley United by 7.47 points - barring a monumental defeat of Ovens Valley at the hands of second-bottom side Benalla Bushrangers,

and an uncharacteristic thrashing of second-placed team Wangaratta Magpies by the Wanderers, Beechworth will not play in finals.

Despite their shot at the silverware going up in smoke, skipper Brenton Surrey said his side was still a tremendous outfit and

would play to the best of their ability.

“We’ve battled away without a bit of luck (this season) and unfortunately we’ve just missed out on probably three or four occasions which sort of hurt,” he said.

“That can happen in

some years, other times the luck goes your way and you’re sitting third, fourth, second or first.

“There’s not a lot in it, we’ve been a little unlucky but in saying that you make your own luck.

“The three or four games we’ve lost by a wicket or

less than half a dozen runs, like against Rovers or Yarrawonga, or on the weekend, but that happens some seasons.

“We move on, we work a bit harder and learn from our mistakes next year and see what we come up with.”
