Bruce said Keith joined the Brigade in 1973 where he devoted his life to the town and wider community.

“Keith achieved an outstanding and unique record holding the captain’s position consecutively for 30 years before retiring from

the role in 2015,” he said.

“He continued to be a devoted brigade member where he held many positions within the brigade and the district.”

He said Keith contributed thousands of hours over the years in his voluntary role which included meetings and training weekends.

Letters to the editor Heritage efforts vital for the local region HELLO and welcome to 2023 where we as an optimistic activist group begin the year full of enthusiasm for preserving and promoting our spectacular heritage.

How lucky and privileged are we in Beechworth and Indigo Shire to be living and working surrounded by such historic beauty.

As custodians of this unique heritage, we must do our best to make sure it stays intact for future generations to understand, appreciate and enjoy.

Last year was a particularly frustrating time for heritage-minded citizens who exhausted enormous energy attempting to get our district’s beloved historic carriages into what we believe is their rightful home, the refurbished and long-vacant Beechworth railway goods shed.

The outcome of shuffling them off to a locked farm shed on private property with no community access, (as per a National Trust and Indigo Shire Council Memorandum of Understanding), was devastating.

The community has not been advised of any conservation program or timetable.

We will continue to fight for the right and sensible decision to be made by both parties involved, National Trust and ISC. This endeavour is one of many other projects on our list we will continue to chip away at.

We have regrouped, rebooted and feel ready to pursue the many challenges that face heritage preservation in Indigo shire. We look forward to working with our community, councillors and Indigo Shire officers.

We welcome all members of our community to support our mission.

We have passion, persistence, and a realisation that if we don’t stand up and fight for our history, it will be gone forever.

Woman charged following fatal collision near Lilliput A RUTHERGLEN woman is facing criminal charges following a crash which claimed the life of a cyclist near Lilliput on Friday morning.

Emergency service crews were called to a collision on Rutherglen-Springhurst Road around 8.20am but were unable to revive a 59-year-old Rutherglen man who had

been hit by a car.

A 22-year-old Rutherglen woman stopped following the crash and was interviewed by police, ultimately charged with dangerous driving causing death by the police Major Collision Investigation Unit.

The woman was bailed and faced court earlier this week for a filing hearing.

Anyone who was travelling along Rutherglen-Springhurst Road between 8am and 8.20am on Friday and may have information about the collision or dashcam footage, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online by visiting www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

In earlier years he had established ‘phone trees’ - a community-developed early fire warning system - in the local areas too.

Keith attended many campaign fires in various states as well as countless local ones.

His trusty Kingswood Holden was used in many fires as a first response vehicle for a number of years equipped with many various CFA radios as well as equipment.

Bruce said Keith had been affectionately known as Captain Koala.

Beechworth Old Cranks Motor Club members Ron McAnanly and Peter Deith said Keith had been presented with a Lifetime Recognition Certificate for his outstanding commitment, loyalty and dedication to the club and the community on January 14.

A founding member of the car club when it kicked off if 1996, the pair said Keith had been a driving force in the club’s annual event Drive Back in Time held on the first weekend in May each year since it began around 1998.

“Keith orgnaised the cruise, worked on the gate for cars entering the event and organised the cruise on Saturday night and Saturday afternoon,” Peter said.

“He always set up the window in the Emporium with a fantastic display too.

“Keith was very active and hardly missed a meeting unless he was away firefighting or the family were travelling.

Keith always put his hand up to help and he helped organise a first time four-day club trip last year.

“We’re going to have a memorial one every year from now,” Peter said.

“Keith was a fantastic mechanic with a great engineering mind and sought after in his field.”

“He had been a nurse at the former hospital at Mayday Hills hospital and was a mechanic by trade as well.

“He was a man of integrity, had a good sense of humour and at times was cheeky too.

“He certainly was exceptional and gave silently to the community.”

The pair said Keith, originally hailing from Myrtleford, had been a devoted family man with a close-knit family.

With a great memory, Keith had been a good storyteller around local history.

Peter said Keith loved his own cars that he rebuilt himself, among them his 1935 Dodge rebuilt from scratch as a hot rod and he had a Kingswood HZ Holden as well.

Wooragee locals get together

By CORAL COOKSLEY SIZZLING sausages, kebabs and a scrumptious array of homemade salads set the scene on a perfect summer’s day for the Wooragee community day with a barbeque in the grounds of the Wooragee Centenary Hall last week.

Hosted by Wooragee Neighbourhood Watch (WNW) on January 23, secretary Neil Townsend said the lunchtime event had been a great way to bring locals together.

Indigo Shire Council contributed $500, made possible from through the Regional Development bushfire recovery funding.

WNW’s Pieter Mourik said the shire recognised the importance of connected communities.

He said when an emergency or disaster occurred, the WNW group needed to know people’s movements if they happened to be away from their properties.

“We’ve lost a lot of contact with each other over the last two years because of the COVID pandemic and haven’t been able to travel, visit or have meetings like this,” he said.

When well-known local identity Geoff Lucas arrived in Wooragee 60 years ago, Mr Mourik said there had been only six families living in the area, while there are now around 200 with many young families having recently

Mr Townsend said the event had attracted a great turnout with many new faces.

“It’s getting the community back together again with the day’s aim to meet your neighbours,” he said.

“With growth in Wooragee Primary School student numbers means there’s many new young families now living in the area too.”

Mr Mourik said young families are needed in the group to keep it on track.

“Wooragee Neighbourhood Watch has been running for 30 years and is one of the oldest in Victoria,” he said.

Long-time resident Mr Lucas said it had been wonderful that new locals are joining in.

A BEECHWORTHIAN jumped at the chance to sign up as an Indigo U3A member at the organisation’s enrolment day last week held in the Beechworth Serviceman’s Memorial Hall.

Impressed with the many opportunities offered, Lisa Kirton said U3A (University of the Third Age) brought like-minded people together in a variety of interest areas as well as providing social connection.

“Being a member keeps people physically and mentally active and bringing people together is fantastic,” she said.

“The educational side with its courses is also awesome, where people can learn new things”.

Lisa’s mother Dawn Kirton has signed up too.

“I joined the family history group which I think will be very interesting as it’s something I started many years ago and never finished,” she said.

She said the U3A planning committee met monthly to review programs, explore new ones with guest presenters considered too.

With a visual showcase for this year’s event, Deb said potential members could see the variety of programs running with a representative from each activity to chat to.

“Representatives in their areas of expertise provided information and answered questions,” she said.

“It’s been a really successful format this year.”

The Indigo group, designed for retired or semiretired people aged 50 and over, runs courses which cover a wide range of interests, from academic to more physical activities such as walking and e-bike riding.

Local ecologist Dr Richard Loyn will be a guest speaker this month with his presentation ‘Birds and Other Local Wildlife’ while federal member for Indi, Dr Helen Haines will in March present a talk on her parliamentary life.

Staghorn Flat youngster debuts at Tamworth Country Music Festival

By CORAL COOKSLEY A YOUNG Stahghorn Flat guitarist, singer and songwriter has set his sights on returning to next year’s Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Twelve-year-old Jack Gregory had saved all his busking money to get to this year’s event held between January 13 - 22.

“I better start saving again, it costs an arm and a leg but gee it’s worth it,” he said.

The talented musician had won last year’s Victorian regional busking competition followed by third place in the nationals.

“I didn’t make the top 10

buskers to play at Toyota Park at the festival, but I gave it a fair crack,” the youngster said.

“I met so many people in the streets and had many well-known country artists come and meet me.”

Attending the festival for the first time, among many favourite experiences had been accompanying wellknown Yackandandah entertainer Pete Denahy on the red carpet, as well as attending the pre red carpet event, at the Golden Guitar Awards.

Jack had the chance to play at Pete’s breakfast show too.

“It was great and a full

house and playing on a stage is very different to busking with a lot of noise around you including other buskers very close by,” he said.

“It was also air-conditioned too and I was street busking in 42 degree heat it was pretty hot!”

Other special times had been as a concertgoer to hear singer James Johnston and country music identity Lee Kernaghan at the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre (TRECC), and listen to two-time Golden Guitar winner and Tamworth local country artist Aleyce Simmonds at the Tamworth Hotel.

Now back in town, Jack is excited to be playing as the support act for musician Joel Havea presented

by Indigo FM on Saturday night February 4 at Kergunyah Hall as well as the following day at Rutherglen Convent.

Joel has spent more than a decade based in Hamburg, Germany with occasional return visits to Australia and his family home in North-East Victoria.

The young musician started at Beechworth Secondary College in Year 7 this week.

TALENTED: Beechworth artist Daina Sgarioto held her first Beechworth exhibition last weekend at Tanswells Hotel.

A LOCAL emerging artist had impressive works using a textile medium on show during a first-time exhibition in Beechworth held at Tanswells Hotel.

The former Wangaratta resident now living in Beechworth, Daina Sgarioto, graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts at RMIT in 2021 where she majored in ceramics.

“I swapped from a major in art to ceramics in my degree,” she said.

Daina completed her secondary school studies at Wangaratta’s Galen Catholic College, where she had a supportive art teacher.

During the COVID-19 pandemic the artist turned her creative hands to crafting colourful rugs with tufting, where satirical wit and humour in the everyday is depicted in her designs.

Illustrating for as long as she can remember, Daina said it was fun to think about designs for the rugs.

“I’m always just sketching or drawing, and draw on my iPad then link to my projector and that’s how I get my images onto the tufting fabric,” she said.

The talented artist said she captured most of her design inspirations from people around her as well as sometimes from watching

TV programs or a movie.

“I write down anything funny that’s mentioned,” she said.

Daina uses acrylic yarn with its extensive colour range for her rugs.

Her work has been displayed in several exhibitions in Melbourne, where some of her creations including sculptures have been in a recent six-week exhibition at Craft Victoria which finishes next Tuesday.

Kiewa-Tangambalanga district shines light on local achievement

By CORAL COOKSLEY INDIGO Shire councillor and Tangambalanga resident Peter Croucher welcomed around 100 people to the Kiewa Memorial Park for the KiewaTangambalanga Australia Day celebrations.

Cr Croucher presented the Shire’s ‘Kiewa-Tangambalanga District Certificate of Achievement’ award to Ken Jones.

He said Mr Jones had been nominated for his service, leadership and volunteering across a number of local community areas.

“During the Corryong bushfires Ken coordinated fencing for bushfire-affected farmers and was often the immediate contact to those in need of assistance.”

Mr Jones is the KiewaTangambalanga Lions Club president and has been honorary secretary of the Kiewa Cemetery Trust since 2009.

He also delivers meals for the Red Cross to the

needy as well as vulnerable community members.

As a leader and mentor in the dairy industry Mr Jones received the inaugural Alpine Dairy Industry Award.

Speakers for the celebration included guest speaker ABC Goulburn Murray’s chief of staff and mornings presenter Gaye Pattison as well as winners from two major Lions’ projects - the Junior Public Speaking award as well as Youth of the Year award.

Local residents formally become Australian citizens

By CORAL COOKSLEY THREE Indigo Shire residents became Australian citizens at a ceremony held in the Indigo Shire Chambers on Australia Day. Laura Martinac from Chiltern, originally from the United Kingdom, Nils (Pontus) Jakobsson from Beechworth who hails from Sweden and Gooramadda’s Doris Langer from Germany pledged their loyalty to Australia in front of presiding officer, Mayor Sophie Price.

Cr Price delivered the official preamble where she said making the Australian citizen’s pledge is the final step in becoming an Australian citizen.

The preamble included citizenship as a common bond uniting all Australians as well as a public commitment to embrace the Constitution, citizenship rights, responsibilities and duties, being on the electoral roll to vote, serve on a jury if called to do so, and to defend Australia should the need arise.

Citizenship also brings civil and social rights, right to express cultural heritage and beliefs together with a responsibility to accept the rights of others to express their heritage and beliefs.

It also included becoming a member of a democratic society

where everyone has equal rights and freedom of opportunity.

Indi Independent federal MP Helen Haines and Nationals Senator for Victoria Senator Bridget McKenzie also officiated in the ceremony.

Doris Langer said it had been a long journey where the day had been an emotional and meaningful one for her.

“It was a beautiful ceremony and I’m really glad I’m here today,” she said.

Doris said she had moved to the Rutherglen area where she lives in Gooramadda as soon as she arrived in Australia five years ago.

Recently completing studies in sustainability at TAFE, Doris said she is pursuing work in the field.

After living in Australia for a number of years, Nils said said he had been happy to make the commitment where he can now vote.

Guest speaker Federal MP for Indi Dr Helen Haines said one of the greatest privileges of her job is to be part of a conferral ceremony for new citizens.

“Today we welcomed new citizens to Indigo Shire and it was thrilling for them,” she said.

They each bring unique skills and talents and a love for this country, and I was delighted to be part of the ceremony.”

Beechworth locals given shining acknowledgement

By CORAL COOKSLEY TWO Beechworthians received recognition for outstanding achievements at the local Australia Day celebrations held in the Town Hall Gardens last week.

Rohan France received the Beechworth District Certificate of Achievement for his exceptional contribution to the community while Grace Brown received the Emma George Sporting Scholarship with both awards presented by Indigo Shire Councillor Larry Goldsworthy.

In presenting the award, Cr Goldsworthy said Mr France is the director of 1st Beechworth Scouts Group and led the Cubs and Venturers each week too.

“As a Beechworth Fire Brigade volunteer he has put his life on the line several times in recent years to help keep community members safe, is a Beechworth RSL committee member as well as contributes to the annual ANZAC Day celebrations in the town,” he said.

“I don’t see the award just for me, it’s for all volunteers in the organisations that I contribute to and is recognition for all of us as what we do is a massive team effort,” he said.

“As a scout group leader I have a great team of leaders who contribute and as a member of the fire brigade, there is a team to get a truck out the door.

“I would like to thank all volunteers and encourage those who don’t volunteer to join in.”

He said Grace, a keen hockey player, had been granted automatic selection into the U15 Victorian State hockey academy in January this year.

ognition of her hard work in achieving at a high level in hockey and helps her continue to achieve her goals of representing Victoria at a state level.”

He said the Beechworth community had been wonderful in its support of Grace and her achievements, including the Beechworth Lions Club, which helped Grace to travel to Tasmania to participate in the U13 national championships in Tasmania.

By CORAL COOKSLEY AN ESTIMATED crowd off 100 people enjoyed Australia Day celebrations under the Lions Park’s shady trees in Rutherglen last week hosted by the local Rotary Club.

Retiring Rutherglen High School principal and ambassador for the day Phil Rogers and Rutherglen High School captain Riley Hayes were guest speakers.

Indigo Shire mayor Sophie Price welcomed the community where she also announced two Rutherglen residents as Citizen of the Year, Laurie Thatcher, and Young Citizen of the Year, Joseph Brooks followed by award presentations.

Rotarian Doug Cole said 20 Rutherglen Rotarians cooking a sizzling breakfast of sausages, eggs and bacon.

“Music plus singing of the national anthem was provided by local identity Hans Duursma, who has provided this service to the Rutherglen community for many years,” Mr Coyle said.

An organiser for the event for many years, Mr Cole said it has been great to run the event this year without COVID restrictions.

Local beer among nation’s finest BRIDGE Road Brewers’s Beechworth Pale Ale has been named Australia’s ninth best craft beer of 2022, improving on its 14th place finish in last year’s GABS Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers countdown.

More than 60,000 public votes were entered across Australia for the 2022 poll, nominating a total of 2140 beers from 311 breweries, with Beechworth Pale Ale maintaining its record as one of only two beers to feature in each count of the poll’s 15-year history.

Bridge Road Brewers founder Ben Kraus said the result was a victory for independent craft beer.

“Doing well in the Hottest 100 is important validation as it is one of the only consumervoted awards in the craft beer industry - it is fantastic to see the public show such strong support and vote an independent brewery like ours into the top 10,” he said.

Championships a numbers game Emergency services to unite to drive up CFA running team participation

By RYAN MALCOLM EMERGENCY service crews from across the region are set to come together at the upcoming CFA district 23 rural championships, as part of a concerted effort to drive up participation numbers locally.

The March 5 event, set to be hosted by Springhurst CFA brigade, will see junior and senior running teams across district 22 (Shepparton), district 23 (Wangaratta and Mansfield) and district 24 (Wodonga, Indigo and Alpine) compete in their final tune-up before the state running championships in late March.

However, in what is new ground for the local competition, a brand-new novice event aside from the usual championship fare will also be conducted, allowing CFA members not associated with a running team to have a taste of the competitive side of firefighting.

Single use plastic straws and more banned from Wednesday THE next phase of the State Government’s landmark ban on single-use plastics began earlier this week, when single-use w plastic drinking straws, cutlery, plates, drink stirrers, cotton bud sticks and expanded polystyrene food and drink containers were banned from sale and supply in Victoria.

Single-use plastics currently make up a third of Victoria’s litter, pollute our precious waterways and harm wildlife.

These items are often only used for a few minutes, yet generate a significant amount of waste - and can be easily avoided or replaced with reusable alternatives that save plastic, and save families money in the long run.

This follows the Labor Government’s ban on plastic shopping bags in 2019, and a $515 million investment to transform our waste and recycling system and divert 80 per cent of waste from landfill by 2030.

The reforms have created thousands of new jobs in recycling and manufacturing, increased Victoria’s recycling capacity and found end products from recycled materials.

Last year, the government invested $1 million towards new technology that will turn hard-to-recycle materials like cartons and coffee cups into sustainable building products.

Victoria will eventually move to a standardised four-stream bin system and have access to a container

deposit scheme to maximise the return of used drink cans, bottles and cartons for recycling.

Since the ban was announced in February 2021, the government has delivered $595,000 in grants to 15 pilot sites including catering businesses, universities and aged care facilities to help replace their singleuse items with reusable alternatives.

The Reuse Pilots Fund alone, will prevent more than 5 million single-use plastic items ending up in landfills or as litter in our environment each year.

COMMUNITY PASSION: Rutherglen’s Irene Cracknell (OAM, JP) has been an SES volunteer for more than four decades, a past Indigo Health Board and committee member for many years and is a member of Indigo Shire Atauro Island Friendship Group both as committee member and treasurer.

A rich history of tireless volunteering IRENE Cracknell (OAM, JP) was born in Mansfield and grew up on a soldier settlement dairy farm at Numurkah as her father had been a returned WWII serviceman. She moved to Melbourne to work after finishing high school, later married, and then returned to country life. With her children and late husband, she shifted to Corowa in NSW before relocating to Rutherglen with her family in 1980.

What did you do in your career?

I worked in office administration in Melbourne and then worked in a Corowa/Rutherglen accounting firm for 44 years with the last few years as office manager.

What brought you to those roles?

As the eldest of six children, I left high school at the end of year 10 to find work with a move to Melbourne. I lived with my aunt and found a job in office administration. This gave me knowledge and skills for the position in the Corowa/Rutherglen accounting firm when we moved to Corowa.

What do you do in the community?

I began voluntary work in the early 1970s helping in my lunch break at the Corowa High School canteen. I joined the Corowa Tennis Association committee and spent many years on the committee as treasurer. After our move to Rutherglen, I was appointed to the Indigo North Health Board in 1988 where I held positions of treasurer, and board chair for nine years. I was made a life member in 2009 and retired from the board seven years ago.

I joined Rutherglen SES in 1982 as the first active female member, appointed as first female controller of Rutherglen SES Unit on June 1, 1998 where I held the position until 2002 and then continued as deputy controller until reappointed controller again in 2018.

I received the National State Emergency Medal in 1997 as well as an SES Long Service medal in 2004. I have been an active member for more than 40 years and still respond to callouts among them road crash rescue, flood and storm events, trees over roads and land searches.

Since 2008 I have been a member of Indigo Shire Atauro Island Friendship Group - both

Irene Cracknell Rutherglen as committee member and treasurer. We raise funds to support Atauro Island students with university studies in the Timor capital of Dili.

We also finance composting toilets on Atauro Island, community gardens and other projects as determined by the local NGO Roman Luan where funding of other projects is subject to our ability to raise funds.

Other voluntary involvements include Neighbourhood Watch and as honorary auditor for local organisations.

On Australia Day 2003, I was honoured to receive both an Order of Australia Medal and the Rutherglen Citizen Achievement award from Indigo Shire.

What do you love about living in Rutherglen?

Rutherglen is a great place to live, I love the community and it gives me much pleasure to be able to help people in times of need. The town is blessed to have so many wonderful wineries, great cafés and restaurants as well as a good variety of shops.

Rutherglen also has a great sense of preserving history such as the gold battery, water tower, Carlyle cemetery, Rutherglen Common School Museum, the old mortuary and stables at Victoria Hotel and the Morton Bay Fig tree planted in 1877 as a few examples.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be, what would you show them?

John Wallace who built the Star Hotel around 1860. It is said that he was asked by a patron to shout the bar and they would name the town Rutherglen after his birthplace in Scotland. Imagine what he would think of the current day Rutherglen where he would still see the Star Hotel standing proudly as a landmark in the main street.

A SMALL field elected to spend their Australia Day evening engaging in twilight golf at Beechworth Golf Club, enjoying the now fully opened front nine.

It was great to be back out playing the front nine again.

Well done to those who have done the work on the course to get it back up and running.

Just like the field, the scores were small, with Jamie Dolny winning the night with 16 points, Darren McCormick claimed the George Kerferd Hotel voucher for runner up with 14 points on a countback from Dylan Pool.

The team’s belief in their current direction was re-affirmed over the offf season with the likes of Cam Fendyk, Ed Cartledge, Jai Middleton and Kayde Surrey all re-committing this season.

Carey said the club’s sudden rise last season made it an easy selling point for players looking to re-commit to the club.

“It’s been pretty easy to be honest, where we ended up last year there’s no doubt the boys were happy with the year and are looking to go one better,” he said.

“There’s a lot of positives about it, we’re now competing for a finals spot and the belief is definitely there in the group still to continue that.”

Beechworth have an upcoming full club pre-season camp to Mount Buffalo from February 24-26 which will precede two practice matches against Ovens and King Football and Netball League squads Greta and Milawa on March 4 and March 17 respectively.

Carey said the camp will act as a great bridge for locals to get to know the team’s newest recruits.

“It will be another weekend to get away and enjoy each other’s company,” he said.

“Obviously with a few Melbourne players too it will be good to get them down and get to know them and find out what they enjoy also.”
