Having congratulated the candidates involved, Mr Tilley said he would submit a complaint against the Independent campaign in the coming weeks, after he said the party “abused” how to

vote cards at polling stations throughout the district.

“I’m grateful and humbled by the support at this election,” he said.

“There’s more to be done - Wooragee and Chiltern CFA need new fire sheds, we need a long-term funding solution for our roads and the need for a new regional

hospital is still very real.

“On the campaign itself I congratulate everyone who put their hand up to run - it’s a tough gig.

“I’ve seen Labor has already submitted a complaint against the Independent campaign and in time we’ll do something similar.

Local primary school helps Christmas appeal Supporting pp g a rising g number of Australians in crisis

By CORAL COOKSLEY A CHRISTMAS drive to provide women and girls doing it tough with basic essentials has been supported by a local primary school.

On Monday, St Joseph Primary School student representatives handed over bags to local Beechworth Share the Dignity volunteer Robyn Funston from outside the Fabric Playground shop in Camp Street, where there is a collection box for toiletry do-

nations.

Now in its eighth year, Share the Dignity’s aim for Christmas is to ensure that women and girls spending Christmas in a refuge or domestic violence shelter receive an essentials bag of toiletries.

The project has been taken on by the school’s Mary and Brigid Social Justice group, a member of Victoria’s Josephite Associates, with students from years

four, five and six making and packing the bags.

St Joseph’s teacher and one of two co-coordinators for the group, Linda Murcutt, said the group decided this year’s project would be share the dignity bags with the handover the second one for this year.

“All the children in the school bought items to put in the bag as well as contributions from hotels and we’ve put together 22 bags

that we have donated,” she said.

“Our motto is to strengthen kindness, where we want the children to be involved in the community and be kind to everyone.”

Robyn said the bags could be handed over to a woman who’s in a difficult position as well as teenage daughters and provide some essentials to get them through.

“I was brought up in a volunteering family and

if school children can be brought up in a similar fashion, they will in the future be able to help others by volunteering and it’s a great way to start when young,” she said.

St Joseph’s Grade six student 12-year-old Charli English said life could be be hard and she thought it was important to be able to help people out and give to help them live the life they need to live.

Year four student 10-year-old Emily Edwards said no matter who people are, they should be treated the same and be able to get the help they need.

Basic essentials in the bags included pads and tampons, deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, and soap as well as little luxuries such as hair accessories or a handwritten note.

Yackandandah community builds disaster resilience

By CORAL COOKSLEY A RESILIENCE project to prepare for survival and recovery from natural disasters or emergencies announced at Yackandandah Community Centre’s recent open house took off on Monday last week.

Working with the Red Cross has been YCC’s first step as part of its work around community resilience and working with emergency services and responders in developing the project with the community.

YCC manager David Thorpe said around 25 community members participated in a Red Cross Community Resilience baseline assessment workshop held at the Yackandandah Public Hall.

“The workshop will provide us with information about community perception of how resilient we are,” he said.

The broad community-based project will work to create better connections, provide information, develop resources and infrastructure.

Red Cross Team leader for Resilience and Recovery for North East Victoria, Jessica Davison, said community assessment is an important first stage in developing a community disaster resilience plan.

Based on Red Cross international experience in disaster recovery, Ms Davison said four key community capacities vital in a community’s ability to respond to and recover from a disaster included connection, knowledge, security, and wellbeing.

The team leader said workshops drew on a broad a range of community experience and knowledge.

“At the end of workshops the community leaves with a good sense of its strengths and priorities for future disaster planning,” she said.

Red Cross offers the RediCommunities program to assist communities to develop their own disaster resilience and recovery plan.

This program is free for Alpine, Indigo, Mansfield and Towong Shire communities.

Despite trailing Mr Tilley by only 671 votes on Sunday afternoon, Ms Hawkins thanked her team of volunteers in conceding the election.

“I congratulate Bill Tilley and his team on their campaign and on retaining the seat for Benambra - this has been an incredibly close race,” she said.

“In 2018, when I first ran, 2000 votes separated myself and the incumbent, and this year, I’ve narrowed that to 671 votes between us (as of Sunday).

“We have attracted the attention of the entire state this election, and were noted as being one of the seats to watch, thanks to the energy, commitment and power of this volunteer team.

“Together, we’ve sent a strong message to the major parties that we want to participate in the political process, not have politics ‘done to us’ by political parties.”

As of yesterday morning, Labor candidate Mark Tait had received 12.76 per cent of primary votes, while no other Benambra candidate received more than 3.5 per cent of the vote.

Local history insights

By CORAL COOKSLEY A FASCINATING account of Beechworth’s history seen through the eyes of Melbourne-based historian Carole Woods drew around 50 history lovers to the Burke Museum on Saturday.

A captivated audience at the event organised by the Friends of the Burke Museum listened to Carole reflect on influences in writing ‘A Titan’s Field’, which was first published in 1985.

Carole referred to the American hit musical ‘Hamilton,’ with the theme of ‘who will tell your story?’ setting the scene for her talk.

“I discussed many influences that shaped my writing of Beechworth’s history and my hope for its relevance today,” she said.

“Sydney University Press accepted the manuscript for

publication, but I secured a Victorian sesquicentenary grant with conditions.

“The Beechworth United Shire and many townspeople supported publication and organised a fantastic launch in 1985.

Carole’s talk tailored to the state election day November 2022, and discussed three highly political episodes.

“At the heart of these episodes were efforts to secure competent, representative government and protection of the interests of people of modest or little means on the Ovens goldfield,” she said.

“In the early years the Ovens was known as the small man’s diggings.”

In discussing popular movements at the Ovens, the author mentioned several outstanding people connected with Beechworth including George Briscoe Kerferd,

James Ingram, Richard Warren and Ada Cambridge.

For Beechworthian, Friends of the Burke Museum member and MC for the talk, Jennifer Perrin, other interesting insights delivered by Carole in her talk had been the detailed cover on requests to the Government by miners for an opening up of land for wider uses than mining.

“The town had an abundance of men wishing to settle where they had first arrived to make their fortunes,” Jennifer said.

“The proposal to release small lots for farming and horticulture would create stability and diversity when the supply of gold diminished.

“Carole also spoke of the first election for the Legislative Council in 1855, which culminated in the nomination of Daniel Cameron as

the member for the Ovens electorate and his subsequent election to represent the area including the story of the Golden Horseshoes.

“The author also referred to others from Beechworth who achieved wider acclaim, among them Sir Isaac Isaacs, Alfred Foster, George Kerford and Dame Jean McNamara.”

Carole said she found the audience engaging with her talk a wonderful, rewarding experience.

The author’s book had been based on her master’s thesis supervised by Dr Geoffrey Serle, AO (1922-1998) who had been reader in history at Monash University and a member of the National Trust’s Buildings Classification Committee.

“Geoff had initiated the project as in late 1965, he noted the need for a comprehensive history of Beechworth as

“He decided to engage one of his honours students on the project.”

The late Roy Harvey, a past curator of the Burke Museum and author of ‘Background to Beechworth’ had been Carole’s companion and guide in the township.

“The girls have done an amazing job where they stayed motivated and have

Animal shelters hit capacity

By RYAN MALCOLM COVID and mental health pressures have resulted in the region’s RSPCA shelters being stocked to capacity, amid a drastic increase in surrendered animals throughout the state.

Shelters were left largely empty as adoption rates reached record highs throughout the COVID pandemic, however, the easing of restrictions coupled with a significant decline in the number of incoming adoption applications has left many animals facing an uphill battle to find a permanent home.

“Our shelters were empty, which was amazing, but what we’re seeing now is more animals come through and that is mainly through our inspectorate (investigating animal abuse claims),” RSPCA animal care manager Nadia Peiris said.

“Our inspectors in Wangaratta have been quite busy, we have had quite a few inspectorate dogs that have come through.

“I think what we’re seeing as well is the effects of the mental health crisis.

“It is a bit of a crisis at the moment and again it could be linked to COVID but we’re getting a lot of people calling through because they have to enter a hospital or a psychiatric unit and they’ve got no one to care for their pet.”

Phone call enquiries around surrendering a pet have risen by 340 per cent in the last three years, while inspectorate surrenders across the state have increased by more than 30 per cent during the same period, with 2172 pets surrendered in 2021/22 and 1575 the year previous.

PHOTO: Kurt Hickling Ms Peiris said dog owners were increasingly choosing to surrender their pets through the inspectorate, instead of addressing their behavioural concerns, many of which were linked to the COVID pandemic.

She said financial concerns around maintaining pets had also risen in recent months, overtaking behav-

ioural issues as the primary reason for pet surrender in Victoria.

“It’s not so much the number of complaints have gone up but what we’re seeing now is where in the past people would follow the instructions our inspectorate gave them to help their animal but now they’re just choosing to surrender straight away,” she said.

“We’re also seeing with dogs that if they come in as strays through council, if there’s a microchip we’ll call up the owner and they’re choosing at that point to surrender their animal or sometimes they’re not even coming in to reclaim.

“We see the effects of that lockdown, we’re seeing dogto-dog aggression, we’re

seeing separation anxiety, a lot of those behaviours of animals being shut up in a home for a really long period of time.

“We’re having to spend quite a bit of time with them getting them ready for adoption.”

With shelter capacity issues expected to continue into the near future, Ms Pei-

ris encouraged residents to consider their ability to care for a pet.

“Anyone who has been thinking about adoptions, our shelters are full, we’ve got lots of animals available for adoption so just visit one of our sites and our customer care team will hopefully match them up with a fantastic pet,” she said.

Beechworth Secondary College students celebrate graduation

BEECHWORTH Secondary College (BSC) Year 12 students celebrated a milestone with a valedictory dinner held at the George Kerferd Hotel earlier this month.

The celebration, which took place on November 15, marked the end of their secondary education.

Family and friends joined 31 excited graduates set to start on their new life adventures in pursuit of chosen careers and further studies.

Principal Trish Broom said the annual event is an important celebration for both students and their families.

“It’s a significant rite of passage as they leave the formal school structure,” she said.

Guest speaker for the special occasion was Beechworth’s Jude Kennedy, who congratulated this year’s cohort before giving an in-

sightful online presentation from Canberra.

The former BSC 2017 graduate shared his university experience as well as tips with some key messages for students embarking on university studies.

“You have finished high school and exams and it is such a massive achievement where you should all be so proud of yourselves,” he said.

Jude recommended studying in an area that students are passionate about to help make the learning process much easier.

“Going to uni is a great experience, (it’s) really fun but it’s also hard work,” he said.

“And I think that going into studies with an open mind is a really good idea because you never know what something is going to be like until you try.”

Jude finished a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Melbourne in 2020

before heading to the Australian National University in Canberra to study medicine earlier this year.

He said many subjects could be chosen from in the first year of studies in his Bachelor of Science degree before specialising in a preferred interest area.

“I really liked marine science when I began my science degree but after studying the subjects decided in the end it wasn’t for me,” he said.

“I studied a subject about the immune system, really liked it and ended up majoring in immunology.”

Living in shared accommodation or a university campus to help create a new circle of friends, and applying for university scholarships were among his other tips as well.

A PACKED Beechworth Christ Church St Peter and St Paul drew parishioners from the town, Eldorado and Yackandandah for a special service for the new priestin-charge on Saturday.

The Reverend Matthew Healy was confirmed with an induction and licensing service of the newly combined Anglican Church parish and parochial districts of Beechworth and Yackandandah.

cese officiated, supported by archdeacon and vicar-general Neil Hicks, canon Scott Jessup from Rutherglen, and Christ Church priest Father Gunnar Rippon.

Father Healy has most recently been vicar of St Bartholomew’s Church in Richmond.

He previously served at St Peter’s Eastern Hill in Melbourne’s city precinct and earlier in Wangaratta, Shepparton and Benalla.

Father Healy will now lead a ministry team in

Beechworth and Yackandandah districts that includes Fr Rippon, Reverend Sue Hall, Rev Heather Matthews and readers Bob van Oort and Carol Dunlop.

Participating congregations include Christ Church Beechworth, St Jude’s Eldorado, Holy Trinity Yackandandah, St Paul’s Allans Flat, St Andrew’s Dederang, St Mark’s Tangambalanga and St Aidan’s Tawonga.

co-operative model in the Wangaratta diocese, which stretches from Corryong to Barmah and south to Kilmore and Buxton.

Fr Rippon acted as precentor at the induction service while Christ Church organist Sandra Williams directed the music and Fr Healy’s wife Katherine Presleyn led psalm 95.

Members of the parochial districts’ congregations also presented Fr Healy with local produce as gifts of welcome for his family.

Tangambalanga Club Connection have embraced the Merry Everything Season with yarn bombing the local shops and Hotel at Tangambalanga.

Inspired by the Chiltern Christmas yarn bombing they visited last year, they began knitting, crocheting and pom pom making to decorate the town making it merry and bright.

Local support from shops joined in with the Merry theme and a big thanks to the Lions Club for their support to help hang the decorations.

What started as a small project, is creating lots of interest and is exceeding expectations. Look out - the group have plans to do some more yarn bombing in the future.

Arts Yackandandah brings musical acts to town ECLECTIC ten-piece indie folk-pop collective band Northern Folk returns to Yackandandah together with This Way North duo in two weeks’ time to delight audiences.

Hosted by Arts Yackandandah, the gig will be the last show of the year for the community arts organisation as well as

Yackandandah’s Candice McLeod said Northern Folk made their last appearance in 2019 for the ‘Let’s Love Loud’ Bushfire Relief concert.

Local vineyard heralded A LOCAL vineyard is home to Victoria’s best Chardonnay, according to this year’s Melbourne Royal Wine Awards (MRWA).

Thrilled Indigo Vineyard chief executive officer Rob Hawkings said the 2021 Secret Village Chardonnay had won the top award in its category.

“We were pretty chuffed when invited to the presentation night for the awards,” he said.

“We knew Secret Village had been awarded a gold medal but not for the best Victorian Chardonnay.

“It’s a Chardonnay that has been an award winner since we started the vineyard some 20 years ago.”

Rob said without a doubt Beechworth was best known for its climate and soils for a consistently great production of Chardonnays.

“It’s about growing good, high-quality fruit and the right grapes where seasons have an impact as well,” he said.

“We have multiple clones but the thing that determines success gets down to a fine detail of ripeness and picking on the right day.

“You have to get it right in the vineyard.

“It’s getting everything right that makes all the difference as well as the choice of the oak barrels

The winning award notes described the Chardonnay as “a lean and complex Chardonnay presenting a restrained, steely backbone embracing grapefruit, lemon, lime zest and white peach, with alluring hints of flint and spice.”

MURRAY cod opening was yesterday, December 1.

It’s no secret that there is a lot of water laying around which will make accessing the rivers difficult.

If I can find a spot, I plan to use cheese and worms for bait.

Cheese is my go-to Murray cod bait and worms are a great all rounder capable of catching any species of fish.

Whether I can find somewhere or not is unknown.

If not, then I may head to Lake Nillahcootie.

I suspect that most cod fisho’s will head to lakes this cod opening.

Lake Mulwala, Lake Nillahcootie, Lake Buffalo, Lake Eildon, Lake Eppalock and several others are all great Murray cod fisheries.

All of the above lakes are stocked regularly with Murray cod except Lake Mulwala, which has a selff sustaining population.

Those wanting to fish with lures will need to head to a lake somewhere, while those who love to fish with bait may be lucky enough to find a quiet backwater where they can fish close to the bank and out of the current.

Many access points around the region are still locked up and will remain that way for quite some time, so I suggest you do your homework before heading out.

Good luck on opening morning, or this weekend, whichever comes for for you.

COMMUNITY FOCUS: Beechworth’s Jim Kenney has been a passionate volunteer for many years, contributing his time and energy to many community organisations. Photographed with pet pooch Sammy.

Serious concern around housing shortage for locals JIM Kenney was born in Beechworth and spent his school years in Mornington. He returned to Beechworth in the 60s and his children grew up in the same house where his parents lived when he was born, which is now Haldon Estate Wines. His father worked for the Ovens and Murray Advertiser.

What’s your job?

Walking my dog. In the past I have been a shop assistant in Mornington, accounts clerk in Melbourne offices of the Education department and a secondary school teacher in Foster, Wodonga, Myrtleford and Beechworth. I then developed my own business as an odd-job man including everything from lawn-mowing to house extensions, (finding lawn-mowing more fulfilling than previous jobs). My wife Helen and I established Beechworth Music School, with me taking piano students up to Grade 3 and handing them on to Helen to take them to higher levels.

In the 1990s I did milk deliveries and became a process server.

What brought you to your current role?

Stress, heart attack, and old age generally.

What do you love about your job?

Sammy, my therapy dog.

What do you do - and have done - in the community?

Walk and talk a lot. I have also spent 20 years as a volunteer welfare worker, both with what is now Quercus, then with the Salvos.

Since 2000 I have been employed as a cricket umpire, an Aussie rules field umpire (retired this year), and Myers Santa. Inaugural volunteer positions have been Baarmutha Park Management committee chairman; Beechworth Wanderers Cricket Club president; Beechworth Men’s Shed president; Home Palliative Care Volunteers manager, U3A vice-president and member of walking school bus originally run by Jackie Mooney. I was also on the steering committees for the Men’s Shed; Bendigo Bank and Beechworth Neighbourhood House (now known as Quercus) Community Support. Other positions held have been Beechworth Singers president; Beechworth Football Club vice-president; Beechworth Squash Club vice-president; assistant secretary of the Beechworth Croquet Club; Beechworth Neighbourhood Centre community support volunteer (BNCCS) and volunteer welfare manager

What’s the most important current community issue for you?

Housing shortage.

What would you do to solve, change or improve that situation?

At my stage of life, I can only dream. If I won the lottery and had enough millions at my disposal, I would buy lots of comfortable threeto-four-bedroom houses in Beechworth and rent them at $200 per week.

What’s the most important current world issue for you?

Every couple of months or so I accidentally watch televised news. It is difficult to distinguish fact from fiction, so I watch films - so I know it is fiction and is likely to have a good ending.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo, or was already here, who would that be and what would you show them?

I would like to show my uncle around Haldon.

In 1967, at age 51, he walked out of Peter McCallum Hospital having been given six months to live. He came to our place in 1983 and I built a flat for him on the property. He then worked for me (mostly mowing) for seven years and grew a massive organic veggie garden which was his main source of food. (He died of heart attack in 2000).

Why would you show him that?

My uncle would be fascinated to see the developments on Havelock Rd and on the property, as well as the buildings at Haldon.

What book are you reading?

‘Footrot Flats’ by New Zealand cartoonist Murray Ball. I’ve just finished ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ by British author J. K. Rowling.

Warmer weather kicks region’s golfers into gear

From back page Brenton Surrey strode out with Clancy Ellett and wore down the Wangaratta strike bowlers, slowly moving the score up to the required target.

With Brenton swiping two consecutive boundaries when the spinner came on, the remaining batsmen were feeling a lot better in the sidelines with the score reaching 1/40.

Unfortunately Brenton found himself trapped infront for a well made 28 and this brought Dylan Pool to the crease, who ended up spending more time walking on and off than he did in the middle as he smashed his very first ball back at the bowler who took a great catch.

Ellett was ticking along nicely pushing his score up to 20 before he was caught behind with the score now at 4/60 with 8 runs required for victory.

The Fendyk brothers (Austen and Campbell) only added another four runs before Cam was trapped LBW. Mat Jensen joined Austen Fendyk in the middle and with Jensen flicking one off his pads for four the total was passed only five wickets down.

After the total was passed the rest of the batsmen went out swinging, only adding another nine runs as the home side was bowled out in the 33rd over for 77.

A great effort with the ball set up a great win - an effort which hopefully can be carried into the next game at Yarrawonga tomorrow.

Obviously the man of the match for The George Kerferd hotel voucher was Clancy Ellett with his 5/13 and 20 runs.

The winner of the night was Willem Love with 17 points, the runner up for The George Kerferd Hotel voucher was Andy Croome on a three way countback from Dave Atkins and Mark Taylor with 16 points.

Two nearest the pins went off and they were won by Geordie Love and Dayne Carey.

Willem Love had a day out also winning the cash for the nearest chip.

Rod Shaw took out first prize in the raffle.

On Sunday we held a nine hole, three person ambrose competition on the same composite course, ahead of holding the AGM. The winners of the ambrose were Daryl Rowe, Andy Croome and Nada Guyatt with 31, while Graeme Cordy, Doyna Collins and Jamie Dolny were runners up with 32.

This coming Sunday there will be golf on a composite course with the normal starting time of 12:30 for 1pm.

On Sunday, December 11 we are planning on organising a trip to Bright Golf Club for an 18 hole round.

Volunteering is great for your health and happiness

ACCORDING to Victorian government figures, approximately 2.3 million (or 42.1 per cent) of Victorians over 15 years of age volunteer formally with organisations or informally in their communities.

Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) is the region’s largest employer and know the value of volunteers across their wards, in community palliative care, as meals on wheels drivers and at the Illoura Residential Aged Care facility, and how much their patients and volunteers get out of the opportunity.

Recently, I had the opportunity to meet some volunteers and speak to them about what volunteering means to them, and I joined Kerryn Mitchell, volunteer manager at NHW on a Meals on Wheels run.

I got to see firsthand the appreciation these older people have for the volunteers and the

important service they provide.

“We have eight runs per day, five days a week,” Kerryn said.

“There are up to 12 deliveries on each run so that’s almost 100 elderly members of the community who rely on hot, fresh meals from our hospital kitchen each day.”

Rob Falla has been a Meals on Wheels volunteer with NHW for around four years.

“Volunteering gives me an involvement in the community and in the care of the elderly, I get the opportunity to meet people I really enjoy spending time with and form wonderful friendships; there is a great opportunity to have a long term relationship with someone because you might be delivering their meal every day for two years so you get to know what’s happening in their life and they will be very interested in what’s happening in your life.

a Homeward Bound and Patient Support person.

“When someone is ready to go home, I help them pack and take them down to the transit lounge and it’s nice for patients to have someone with them when they’re going home - some of them are quite lonely so it’s nice that I can be there for them to talk to”.

Rosie Camillo-Tennent takes an art as therapy group each week at Illoura Residential Care and said that volunteering is a twoway process.

“It keeps me active, keeps me thinking and gives me a chance to be integrated into the community, as an immigrant to Australia it’s really nice to be able to give back to say thank you for making me welcome,” she said.

“I really do get as much out of volunteering as the residents get from my being there.”

Palliative Care volunteer Linda Hughes said that giving back to the community is an important reason why she volunteers.

MEAL DELIVERY: Rob Falla is one of Northeast Health Wangaratta’s volunteers who gets as much out of his work contribution as the people he visits do.

“Being able to help and support people during a really difficult time in their lives is a special thing,” she said.

“We spend time with people in their homes, offering support and practical assistance to the family and, if we want to,

we can visit them in the hospital at end of life.”

Demographically, people aged 40-54 years old are the most prevalent as volunteers (with 30.5 per cent), followed by people aged 70 years and over (at 28 per cent).

Volunteering rates were

similar between males (23 per cent) and females (26 per cent).

Protect your family from mosquitoes this summer MOSQUITOES are not just annoying, they can also carry and transmit diseases including Dengue fever, Australian and Japanese Encephalitis and Ross River fever.

Prevention is the order of the day with so much water still lying around so follow this simple checklist to stop mosquitoes breeding on your property and from getting inside your home.

• Maintain fly screens to keep mosquitoes out - ensure you have fly screens on windows, doors, vents and chimneys.

• Use insect sprays and repellents - many of these can be used inside and outside.

• Use fly spray against visible mosquitoes in your home and plug-in mosquito ‘zappers’ or vaporisers on enclosed verandas.

• Use mosquito-coils in outdoor areas.

STRESS is often associated with low mood or bad tempers and irritability, but stress can cause physical symptoms in many people too.

Hearing the holiday spirit AS we get closer to the traditional Christmas break, it is helpful to remember that this is the time of year when hopefully everyone in our community can be included in the celebrations, family gatherings and the fun.

What are the ‘things’ we should do to ensure that inclusion is possible?

Firstly, for those of our community who have a hearing loss and use hearing aids, it is important to make sure the aids are working well.

The devices can only help when they are worn.

If the aids are not functioning as well as you would like, organising a service during the next couple of weeks is important.

See your hearing aid provider about this - you may not even need an appointment.

If you have hearing aids which currently ‘live in the drawer’ (and we do know some), please remember to wear them consistently for the next few weeks.

This will gradually improve how you hear during the social times.

Wearing your aids all day long, every day, is the best way to help your brain get a consistent message and train yourself to hear better in those challenging situations involving background noise.

holidays and take spare batteries (or your recharging unit) if going away from home for a time.

Give yourself the gift of good health this Christmas

WITH Christmas Day fast approaching, it seems like it’s a deadline that everything has to get done by, and this can initiate some stress in us, while waiting at the supermarket queues, or trying to find a car parking space to do that ‘one extra job on our list’.

Take some time to relax, to do some deep breathing, maybe some yoga or go for a walk/run; all these things will help you cope if you’re feeling stressed at all.

Often during this time of year we sometimes eat and drink to excess.

So the best advice is if you do this on Christmas Day, you don’t need to keep up that pace on Boxing Day or all the way to NYE - best to go back to the diet that your body feels best on - here are some more tips to make this a really fun and healthy season.

Remember the 80/15/5 Rule - 80 per cent of the time follow the best diet that your body feels amazing on, 15 per cent of the time if you enjoy some of those treats your aunty made at Christmas it won’t make too much difference, and 5 per cent of the time if you really love Christmas pudding - enjoy it and savour it but there’s no need to keep eating it for days on end.

It’s almost time to run for fun and your health again REGISTRATION is now open for the 2023 Wangaratta Chronicle Marathon and Fun Run which will take place on Sunday, March 19, 2023.

The Wangaratta Chronicle is pleased to confirm their partnership with Garry Nash and Co as the event’s major sponsor and look forward to planning the event together following the successful 2022 event in March.

There will be five events taking place - marathon, half marathon, 10km run/walk, 5km run/walk and the 2km primary school challenge.

The 2km Primary School Challenge and the Community Teams Challenge will once again offer generous cash prizes and trophies.
