Carriage conversation hots up A LIVELY discussion at Tuesday night’s council meeting between the Indigo Shire Council mayor and chief executive officer followed an agenda item about the relocation of the historic carriages to the railway goods shed. The item stemmed from a Beechworth Historical Society and Beechworth Old Cranks Car Club’s petition requesting Indigo Shire support for the project. Mayor Bernard Gaffney

raised questions from a report that stated ‘the National Trust has considered the goods shed as a location and has ruled it out as an appropriate venue’. “I’ve spoken to the CEO of the National Trust, I’ve spoken to him again today (Tuesday) and he tells me that’s not correct,” Cr Gaffney said.

Mayor y q questions CEO over relocation saga g Indigo Shire CEO Trevor Ierino has been in discussions with the National Trust in arranging a Memorandum of Understanding for the historic carriages and their location and he said he understood the comment in the report to be true as council understood it. “We’re talking about appropriate locations and I think that an appropri-
ate location will be borne throughout that process,” he said. Mr Ierino said he was happy to remove the comment from the report that would be noted in the minutes. Cr Gaffney also raised the question about how relocating the carriage collection to the goods shed would remove the opportunity for
retail or hospitality business opportunities and activation at the precinct. “Is it true that the goods shed has been empty for four years,” the mayor asked. In response, Mr Ierino said, “It’s true that it’s been empty for four years but works that have been done inside to improve it are less than four years old.” ■ Continued page 2
