after Beechworth to Bridge (B2B) founder Lisa Cartledge lost her husband Sean to suicide in 2014.

The walk’s aim is to give people impacted by suicide the chance to

walk, talk and support each other, raise suicide awareness, improve the healing process and promote depression as treatable for suicide prevention by opening up conversations.

“It’s significant this year being 10 years since Sean passed away but the walk is about everyone who

suffers with the stigma associated with suicide,” Lisa said.

The B2B founder said people return year after year with an increasing number of new walkers every year.

“It’s created a camaraderie – a family with people coming from everywhere including

Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney,” she said.

A contingent of retired Victorian police officers who have lost colleagues from suicide will be joining the walk as well.

“We’re all united through impacts of suicide, but we feel the support of each other,” Lisa said.

“We’ve grown so much but it’s not just about the amazing number of people who walk every year, it’s also about incredible community support.”

With some new committee members, event volunteers, people and community supporting the walk or helping in some way, the walk is expected to extend the conversation through their families, friends and networks.

“People may not be actually walking, but they’re having the conversations and removing the stigma which is what B2B is about,” Lisa said.

“It’s really humbling and it feels like we’re creating change, albeit small but we’re having a positive impact.”

Lisa said the walk was well supported

by Rotary and Lions clubs, many other organisations, and the community with funds received from registrations helping the team provide the best event possible.

B2B as a not-for-profit group began in 2018 as a 22-day 720 kilometre walk to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, with the walk changed from Beechworth to Bright around four years ago.

A supportive and all-inclusive community event, the walk has been undertaken every year since then except for 2020 due to COVID restrictions.

People can walk for one, two or all three days from March 22 to 24 with the first leg from Beechworth to Everton.

The second day is from Everton to Myrtleford with the last day from Myrtleford to Bright and walkers can also just ‘leg’ the last five kilometres from Porepunkah to Bright.

Brigade leader named Young Citizen of the Year AUSTRALIA DAY

IT’S very rare a member of a local fire brigade’s senior management team would be eligible for an award dedicated to acknowledging young people in the community.

But 24-year-old Chiltern local and recently-crowned Indigo Shire Young Citizen of the Year Kurt Sorenson isn’t like most young firefighters, having spent more than half his life with his local brigade, where he now serves as 2nd Lieutenant and training coordinator.

Mr Sorenson accepted the award at last Friday’s Chiltern Australia Day ceremony while surrounded by his fellow CFA volunteers, whom he credited for mentoring him since he joined the brigade’s junior ranks as an 11-year-old.

“I’d just started playing under 14s footy and the coach at the time was the captain (of the brigade) – I used to live up the hill from the fire station, so every time I’d ride my bike past, he’d bail me up, so eventually I signed up,” he said.

“I just had a keen interest in

Mr Sorenson’s leadership qualities have been touted in recent years, with his calmness on the fire ground and his guidance of the brigade’s junior program among a number of widely-respected traits.

“I’ve always sort of been in the front seat as a crew leader pretty early on, but I’ve always had good people sitting next to me driving the truck and prompting me and mentoring me,” Mr Sorenson said.

“I think Shannon’s (current captain Shannon Beacom) got me eartagged for being next (captain), but I’ll just keep doing

what I’m doing at the moment and once Shannon’s had his time I’ll move into that role.

“We’ve got a really good crew at Chiltern, everyone seems to get along and even the brigade management team over a number of years before I was involved has always been so strong, so we’re in a really good spot at Chiltern.

“I do my little piece of the puzzle, and everyone else does theirs and it all seems to work pretty well.”

Captivating talk about Aboriginal ring trees on Australia Day

By CORAL COOKSLEY THIS year’s guest speaker at Beechworth’s Australia Day celebrations advocated for the history of Aboriginal innovation and invention to be understood and respected by all Australians.

Wooragee’s Dr Pieter Mourik (inset) delivered a fascinating talk on Aboriginal ring trees.

The retired medical professional who has worked alongside Aboriginal Elders in researching the trees said it is now known that the nation prior to colonisation had been mapped by First Nations people.

Dr Mourik said each group’s boundaries on country, directions and landmarks had been marked by manipulating young and flexible gum trees known as ring trees.

“The boundaries were documented in 1940 by the Tindale Map,” he said.

The map showed the distribution of Aboriginal groups published by the late anthropologist Norman Tindale.

“Very few Australians have ever heard about these magnificent, historic landmarks,” Mr Mourik said.

The researcher spoke about how knowledge should be shared between Aboriginal corporations and all Australians for a greater

He said people needed to learn about the trees for their preservation from the shared knowledge to help identify, record and protect remaining trees.

“It’s not only the tree itself but the site it represents,” he said.

“Rings trees are protected in NSW but not in Victoria,” he said.

Dr Mourik’s Aboriginal ring tree project clinched a win in the Indigenous Culture category in last year’s annual Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria (KABV) sustainability awards.

Shire celebrates Australia together FOR Beechworth’s Chris Dormer, growing up in a country town in NSW with parents active in their community set the scene for her many years of voluntary work.

Named Indigo Shire’s Citizen of the Year in this year’s local Australia Day awards, Chris has made significant contributions to both the Beechworth and Stanley communities over many years.

The Beechworthian was one of a number of residents around the shire recognised as outstanding citizens, with 24-year-old Kurt Sorenson also honoured as Indigo Shire’s Young Citizen of the Year.

Chris received her award at Beechworth’s Australia Day celebrations held in a packed Servicemen’s Memorial Hall, while Kurt received his award at Chiltern’s Australia Day ceremony held at the town’s Tourist Park, surrounded by his Chiltern CFA colleagues.

Mayor Sophie Price said Ms Dormer had left a lasting impact on both the Stanley and Beechworth communities.

Colin Harkin received the Barnawartha and District Certificate of Achievement and Valma Chenoweth was presented with the Chiltern District Certificate of Achievement.

Kergunyah Country Women’s Association received the Indigo Shire Community Organisation of the Year award.

Beechworth’s Reuben Pfahlert received the Emma George Junior Sporting Scholarship, which was presented at the Beechworth event in front of a 140-strong crowd which gathered last Friday morning.

Chris was thrilled to have her family make a special trip from Melbourne to attend the ceremony.

“We all come from very different places and different life experiences, and it’s an opportunity to celebrate living in an extraordinary country and location.

“It is important that these opportunities are used to enjoy and reflect on our diverse histories including traditional land owners, and the opportunity for us to benefit by learning more about their culture and history, and how that can help us to be a better society as well.”

Beechworth 1st Scouts group raised and lowered the Australian flag.

Scout leader Rachelle Verlin said the event brought communities together.

“It recognises those who contribute to our community and shows young ones the meaning of community,” she said.

Beechworth Lions and Rotary clubs, CWA and 1st Scouts group hosted the Australia Day event with John Costello as MC. A sausage sizzle was part of an early morning breakfast before the event start.

Three take Australian pledge in Indigo Shire THREE shire residents made their pledges to become Australian citizens on Monday at a ceremony held in Indigo Shire Chambers with guest speaker Indi Independent Federal MP Helen Haines.

Joan Shallue and Andrew Barraclough, both from Beechworth, and Hindrek Lind from Rutherglen said the day had marked a very special one for them.

Ms Shallue originally hailed from England, and has been contributing to the community and the nursing profession for a number of years.

“I’m a nurse at Beechworth Health Service and today is a wonderful day because I have become an Australian citizen,” she said.

An excited Mr Lind said he arrived in Australia seven years ago from Estonia and has enjoyed living in Rutherglen with his family since 2021.

The Rutherglen carpenter said he had moved from Brisbane.

“We were looking for a place to buy and call it our own and Rutherglen popped up for us as an affordable place to live,” he said.

Dr Haines said it is always a big thrill for her to participate in a citizenship ceremony.

“I love welcoming new citizens into our nation,” she said.

“Some of them have been here a long time and this is formalising their love and commitment to the commu-

Exciting start to secondary studies

By CORAL COOKSLEY STARTING studies at Beechworth Secondary College has been an exciting time for new Year 7 students this week.

More than 60 new students began their secondary studies at the college on Tuesday.

Jack Summons, who previously attended Yackandandah Primary School, said he had a good first day experience but had been a bit nervous in the morning.

“It was really fun to like be with some of my friends from my primary school and meet new people,” the young student said.

Tex Hunt finished Year 6 at St Joseph’s Primary School last year, and said it had been fun to step into the bigger high school with its modern facilities.

Both Tex and Jack said they have a keen interest in woodwork.

Bella Hartshorn completed primary schooling at Middle Indigo Primary School.

She said she enjoyed her first day with the chance to be in different classes throughout the day.

“I like music which we had yesterday, and I like English too,” she said.

With Year 7 enrolments significantly up from last year, principal Patricia Broom said another class had been added.

The principal said the year’s start had been an exciting one as the local community recognised the school’s offerings.

“It’s a dynamic school with great facilities and we have a great team of really passionate teachers with six new staff this year,” she said.

Some new subjects are being offered as some of the new teachers are specialists in areas such as game design.

Ms Broom also said student numbers have increased for the school’s VET program with improvements to transport with a bus service when studying off the school’s campus.

Besides attending a number of university open days throughout the year to ensure students can make informed choices, the college also arranges study camps at regional universities such as Federation and Deakin for students to experience university life, explore study pathways and find out more about courses.

Among programs to support student’s learning, a program is offered at Melbourne University as well.

Exciting developments

for the college have also included a renovated gymnasium with modern facilities which the community can use as well.

Another is in the design stage with planning to follow and government funding confirmed for the last stage of the school’s master building plan with a $6.5 million scope to house hospitality studies, classrooms and offices.

Ms Broom said tours can be arranged at the school anytime through the week.

The college open night will be held on Wednesday, March 27.

RECORDS indicate a Sequoia sempervirens known as a coastal redwood struck by lightning last Thursday morning, splitting it from top to bottom, had been planted in the grounds of the Ovens and District Hospital in 1874.

The tall specimen of the Sequoia species had grown among cedars and bunya pines planted around that time.

The sequoia, listed as number 27 on the Churches Walk in Centennial Park behind the old hospital façade had to be felled on Thursday morning for safety reasons.

Local resident Jan Milhinch said nearby neighbours to the park felt the impact of the strike while the tree’s display tag was flung many metres away.

Some community members who saw social media posts visited the site throughout the day with fond memories of the loved tree with some placing crosses on the tree.

Jan said the old hospital gardens would have been beautiful in its day as it ex-

tended down to the Gorge.

“There are remains of some of the stone walls that delineated the hospital’s garden boundaries,” she said.

She said tree plantings would most likely have been planted within a decade of each other when the botanical garden was created like other beautiful botanical gardens in Beechworth.

“It would not be very different from the Mayday Hills timing for tree planting,” she said.

Jan said the coastal redwood was the only one in this park with others in town including one in the Town Hall Gardens and one on the Beechworth Tree Lake Walk.

The tree at a height of 40 metres in 2010 had grown four metres in 27 years from 1983 to 2010 from measurements taken with a few extra metres which could be added as an estimate for later years.

She said no documentation has been found indicating where the trees were sourced but other plants known as exotics as opposed to native had come from Europe.

Popular local heritage festival prepares for November return

By CORAL COOKSLEY THE BEECHWORTH Heritage Festival is set to run in November for its second year as planning ramped up at this month’s meeting with some new faces on the 10-member committee.

Lorraine Lucas from Hotel Nicholas was re-elected as president for her second term at the festival committee’s annual general meeting held at Hotel Nicholas on January 17.

Virginia Mansell Lees is secretary, Helen Gollan is treasurer while Kathryn Chivers, Tim Schloss, Jenni Gilliver, Kelly Enright, Jaycee Luke, Dean Anders, and Jaimie Kronborg were reelected or newly elected to this year’s committee.

Lorraine said a variety of additional options for this year’s festival were being explored in the wake of last year’s successful event showcasing Beechworth’s significant heritage.

She said generous sponsorships have given the group greater scope for marketing opportunities to draw festival-goers to the actionpacked event celebrating the town’s diverse history in-

“Everything we did last year was very well received with people being overwhelmingly positive about the event,” she said.

“We had a great band of volunteers, and the Beechworth Correctional Centre’s

community team were fantastic, and we couldn’t have done it without them.

“Anyone who wants to come along and lend a hand is very welcome.”

Lorraine said the festival keeps the spirit of the gold rush days alive with Beechworth the most important town between Melbourne

and Sydney at that time.

“The weekend also gives artisans and various community groups the chance to showcase their work as well as give people an opportunity to buy their wares,” she said.

“It’s a true community event because different groups have come together

to create an event about Beechworth’s heritage and in turn have the opportunity to raise money for their particular club or organisation”.

Lorraine said heritage trades will again be the centre of activities in the Police Paddock with a stage for a range of Indigenous, Chinese and Celtic performers,

while a number of other events will be held around the town too.

Popular attractions set to return this year include Corryong artist, didgeridoo craftsman and player Jon Juda, who will talk about First Nation’s people and their culture.

Another is the local Golden Serpents Dragon Boat Club with the awakening of the dragon ceremony at Lake Sambell fitting in with Beechworth’s Chinese heritage.

Lorraine said the Chinese Protectorate Office in Beechworth’s historic precinct had garnered a lot of interest too, having displayed a number of artefacts.

“We’re looking at having a more organised Celtic dinner as well as expanding on the very popular cellar tour of various venues in the main Beechworth business area,” she said.

Duck hunting season given green light by government

By STEVE KELLY RECREATIONAL duck and quail hunting will continue in Victoria with the State Government announcing its response to a parliamentary inquiry on Monday.

The government will accept seven of the Select Committee’s eight recommendations in full or in principle.

While the committee did not reach consensus in its report, the views of more than 10,000 Victorians and organisations were heard in the biggest response to a parliamentary inquiry ever in Victoria.

Minister for Outdoor Recreation, Steve Dimopoulos, said duck hunting is a legitimate activity and it supports regional communities and economies.

“Our position has not changed and we’re supporting recreational duck and quail hunting to continue in a safe, sustainable and responsible way with minimal harm to our environment,” he said.

“We thank everyone who contributed to the Inquiry – the process was about listening to different perspectives, and that’s exactly what we’ve done.”

The 2024 duck season will commence on Wednesday, April 10 and end on Wednesday, June 5, inclusive.

Ange advocates for sexual health

HEALTH ADVOCATE: Beechworth’s Ange Davidson champions for better rural sexual and reproductive health services.

ANGE Davidson was born in Port Fairy on Gunditjmara country where she spent her childhood by the beach and then later at Phillip Island. She shifted to the country with her family as an eight-yearold to a little place called Terip Terip. Ange lived in Melbourne to study and work and has moved around Victoria for various work opportunities. Having lived in the King Valley for a few years and experiencing the gems that the North East had to offer, Ange then moved from Geelong to Beechworth 15 years ago.

What do you do workwise?

I currently work as a sexual health nurse in a nurse-led sexual health clinic, supported by a GP specialising in sexual health in Wodonga. I previously worked as an adolescent health nurse at Beechworth Secondary College and had numerous nursing and social work jobs prior to moving to Beechworth. I have a very small flower business as my side hustle which is fun, creative and very different to working in a sexual health clinic.

What brought you to your role/ career?

After working as a social worker with young people in homeless and drug and alcohol services, it became very clear that a lot of young people didn’t want to or didn’t feel comfortable going to their GP for their sexual health and

Ange Davidson many had missed out on education in schools, or the education was not hitting the mark. Young people were missing out on good information to have safe and respectful relationships.

What do you love about your work?

It is never boring, it can be funny, challenging, heart-breaking and interesting. I work in a great little team of other nurses and GPs, the refugee health clinic, and other programs within the organisation I work for. I am an executive member of the Australasian Sexual Health and HIV Nurses Association and get to hear about different sexual health services all over the country, the challenges and the innovations and I enjoy advocating for better rural sexual and reproductive health services as well as access to – and better – sexual health education in schools.

Is there an important community issue that you think needs addressing?

Impacts of climate and the inequity in rural health services compared to metropolitan

areas are really important community issues that individuals, communities, local, state and federal governments need to work together to address. I think we are seeing the impacts of climate change on access to or interrupted healthcare when we have severe weather events.

What do you see as one of the most important current world issues?

Climate emergency with impacts of this on our food supplies, our land, our waterways, oceans, healthy bush and our health.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo Shire or was already here, who would that be, what would you show them, and why?

Aboriginal elder from Nauiyu and renowned artist, activist, writer and public speaker, Dr MiriamRose Ungunmerr Baumann. She was Senior Australian of the Year in 2021. She is wise and calm, and I think we as a nation can learn a lot from her. I think we would wander to the rocks at the Gorge and go to the Chiltern-Mount Pilot National Park and visit the Yeddonba Indigenous Rock Art site. They are old and beautiful places to walk, sit, listen and share stories.

What book are you reading?

I have just finished ‘Edenglassie’

by Melissa Lucashenko and I am rereading Trent Dalton’s ‘Love Stories’ – this book should be owned by all.

Eldorado community fights back on state’s dredge restrictions

By RYAN MALCOLM A GROUP of Eldorado locals are fighting back against a Parks Victoria directive restricting vehicular access for locals to the northern side of the Eldorado Dredge and historic reserve.

A Parks Victoria letter to Eldorado community member Roxanne Bodsworth in December outlined the popular track, which is used regularly by community members for recreational purposes, would be restricted for the use of walkers, management vehicles and to access adjoining private land only.

The letter also discouraged swimming at the dredge site and the nearby top cut swimming holes, due to the risks of blue green algae.

In the letter, which was issued by Parks’ Beechworth office, a local ranger noted the track was intended for the primary use of walkers, and had deteriorated significantly through continued vehicular use during recent wet seasons.

The letter also outlined concerns around damage to the surrounding environment and an increased risk to people.

A petition developed by Ms Bodsworth in late-December garnered 524 signatures from surrounding communities and wider Australia, urging Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos to continue to allow easy access to the dredge site for people of all ages and abilities.

A group of community delegates including Ms Bodsworth met with Ovens Valley MP Tim McCurdy at the dredge site last Wednesday, where locals detailed their

need to retain vehicular access due to their existing water rights at the dredge, ease of access to transport recreational swimming and fishing equipment, and argued the existing walking track was inaccessible for anyone aged or living with a disability.

Ms Bodsworth said a similar community effort in the early 2000s had seen the establishment of the Eldorado Historic Park under the National Parks Act 2002, which allowed recreational use of the land after it was deemed to be “of low value conservation”.

“We fought so hard in 2001/02 to have these rights to access recognised, and somebody new moves in and we’ve got to go through it again,” she said.

“It should be set down that locals get to use these areas for recreational purposes.

“They’ve ignored the petition that was signed by over 500 people – they’ve totally ignored that and said it’s about nature tourism and as a walking track.

“It’s a walking track that can’t be used by anybody who’s disabled or anyone who is aged in any way, and certainly not if you want to carry any equipment around there.

“The local usage is more important than their nature tourism, which is very limited anyway.”

A Parks Victoria spokesperson said the organisation would not expand further on its position, which was said to have been outlined fully in the December 11 letter to Ms Bodsworth.

Tennis competition heats up in Beechworth

By GREG CLYDESDALE THE second season of Beechworth Tennis Club’s Wednesday night competition commenced on January 17, as players shrugged off their holiday break and got back on the courts eager to tread the new all weather rebound ace surface.

They soon realized that it was a long journey to qualifying for the Australian Open, but it didn’t lessen their enthusiasm.

Week two on January 24 the enthusiasm was still high as players emulated the

stars of the AO and tried out some new techniques.

The top spin has been adopted by many players while court movement and shot placement is being improved to add some method to the chaotic flourishes.

The team results in the second round may have been influenced by some standout performances.

Darren McCormick and his Alpine Survey and Mapping team struggled with the higher bounce and the solid performance of the Indigo Real Estate team who won every set in a com-

manding performance.

Simon, who was filling in for Andrew Corcoran, proved a valuable replacement, winning the battle over Simon M in each of their contests.

Team Beechworth Coffee Roasters were nearly as impressive with a five set to one set scoreline over team Alpine Indigo Accounting.

While each match was close the comprehensive seven games to one result of Rod Watson and Ann Henderson over Angus and Sue Fendyk turned the result.

iantly to lift his teammates winning twelve games in total in entertaining and enjoyable contests.

Team Myrtleford Furnishings and Flooring ended the night with a sound four sets to two win. Both teams nights was reflected in the last set when Rachael Cavellin and Greg Clydesdale won eight games to nil, but with every game going to deuce the final score did not reflect the closeness of the set.

Team Shingleback Off Road and Team Burder Industries had a similar four set to two result with Jer-

emy Schmolzer and Christie Bence winning seven games to one over Mick Cavellin and Kevin Ormrod defying the final result.

Teams are getting to know each other’s skills and there is more cohesion in movement and placement, as the enthusiasm for improvement of skills is joining the social enjoyment and awareness of fitness demands which all players are commenting on.

With nine teams there is a bye team each week which means there are reserve players to choose from if a player is absent.

Round 4 on February 7 sees Team Myrtleford Furnishing and Floor take on Team Alpine Survey and Mapping.

Team Nor Mac Rural will play Team Burder Industries while Shingleback Off Road play Alpine Indigo Accounting, with Indigo Real Estate to play Beechworth Coffee Roasters to round out the fixture.

After these early rounds we can begin to see the teams and combinations that will influence the ladder standings.

AUSTRALIA DAY SCRAMBLE EYES ANNUAL RETURN

By DYLAN POOL BEECHWORTH Golf Club welcomed members, beginners and Wooragee Tennis Club players to the inaugural Australia Day scramble golf event last Friday.

Some 34 players took part, enjoying great weather and a course which was in excellent condition after the extensive summer rain.

Some outstanding outfits were worn with the Wooragee crew outdoing everyone.

The Nankervis girls thought if they looked good they would automatically play well or so they tried to tell their team mates - it’s not that easy girls.

Ali Maher and Dean Bensted took out the best dressed with honourable mentions to Maree Nankervis and Marcus O’Connor for their outfits.

For the golf results Maree Nankervis, Graeme Cordy and Mark Ladbrook managed to hit nearest the pins on par three holes.

DRESS TO IMPRESS: Wooragee Tennis Club members looked sharp as they took to the golf course on Australia Day. On the famous ‘Pot Luck’ hole, Debbie Tully, Steve Voogt ,Lisa O,Connor ,Zoe Gephart, Gail Smith and Mark Ladbrook all landed inside the red zone.

In the team event, Glenda Marshall, Pam Nankervis, and Russell Cato won with a great combined score of 52.

Runners up were Debbie Tully, Zane Howard, Maree Nankervis and Dean Bensted.

It could only happen at Beechworth with Pam Nankervis a life member

of both Beechworth Golf Club and Wooragee Tennis Club being involved in the winning team.

A delicious lunch followed the completion of play, and Glenda Marshall and Lisa O’Connor won the raffles.

Thanks to all the members who pitched in to help get the event off the ground and everyone for their enthusiasm and involvement on the day.

WDCA juniors win at Country Week

By NATHAN DE VRIES THERE are three new championship teams in the Wangaratta and District Cricket Association, each boasting Beechworth Wanderers players.

The WDCA’s under 12 Blue, under 15 and under 16 squads triumphed in their North East Country Region 6 Junior Country Week finals over the weekend in dramatic fashion.

WDCA junior representative cricket liaison Wayne Cooper said three trophies from three grand finals was a terrific way for the association to close out the junior representative season.

“We ended up with three wins out of three grand finals, or three wins from five (grades), so it was really good, it was a very successful carnival,” he said.

“In under 12s, the highlight was Byron Dodd making three 50s in a row (166

runs @ 166 for the tournament).

“In under 15s Van Kreeck took a lot of wickets on one day in two T20s, including two wickets at the end of one game and a wicket in the first ball of the next game.

“That posed a question as to whether it was a hattrick or not, but it’s actually not – I think we’ll count it anyway.

“Five of our players got into the Team of the Week: Mitch McMasters (also wicket-keeper of the tournament), Van Kreeck, Byron Dodd (also batter of the tournament), Jonty Priest (also player of the tournament), and Lenny Sims.”

Taking on Cricket Albury Wodonga at Baranduda, the under 12 Blue squad won the toss and elected to bat, posting 6/245 from their 40 overs.

Handy middle order knocks from Mitch McMasters (17) and Beechworth’s George Pfahlert (26) helped the Blues post a formidable total to defend.

were simply too good, with Benji Wollington (2/40) getting the breakthrough before Finn Mitchell (3/22) ripped the heart out of the middle order.

The under 15s had a closer match in their final against CAW Country, defending 3/193 to take the win by 20 runs.

The WDCA top order fired, with opener Mitchell Feldtmann recording a half

century with great knocks coming from Reid McNamara (46) and Van Kreeck (34*).

Kreeck backed up his batting performance with the ball, picking up the early wicket of Harry Greenhill for eight, before coming back on later to rip through the middle order, finishing with 3/26.

Connor Ormond was on fire at the other end, finishing with 3/15, with CAW Country limping to 7/173 from their 40 overs.

The under 16s defied the odds after posting a somewhat under par 10/165 from 34 overs, with Jed Marek’s 57 and Beechworth player Henry Scalzo’s 38 the only innings of real note.

CAW Country’s Jonathan Whiting (60) and Noah Andrews (56) almost got their side home, before a collapse saw the batting side capitulate, finishing seven runs shy.

Baarmutha hoodoo continues for Wanderers BEECHWORTH’S A grade middle order was exposed by a quality Rovers United Bruck bowling attack as they went down by 105 runs last weekend.

Chasing a monster 264 runs to win at Baarmutha Park, Kayde Surrey made a strong start for the Wanderers before his reliable opening partner Clancy Ellett fell for just three.

As Surrey was dismissed for 23 not long after, brother Brenton and Cam Fendyk looked set to continue their strong form with the bat as the pair steadied the ship.

But as Fendyk’s stumps were castled for 19, Surrey was unable to find a stable partner at the other end throughout the rest of the batting order, with just four runs combined off the bat of the remaining eight batters in a steady flow of wickets.

Despite wickets falling around him, Surrey still was able to keep his team in the game with a remarkable individual performance, falling eight runs short of his 100 as the final nail in the Wanderers coffin, bowled out for 158.

McNamara led from the front with the ball taking the key wickets of the Surreys and Fendyk among his ultraimpressive 5-28 off 15 overs.

On the back of his recent form Surrey has catapulted to the top of the league’s run scoring tally with a lead of almost 160 runs from young teammate Ellett, at an average of 53.

Beechworth’s finals prospects may be decided over the next two rounds with key matches at home against City Colts starting tomorrow and Wangaratta Magpies in three weeks’ time.

Sitting in fourth, the Wanderers will need to break their home hoodoo this season to stay in the top four, having lost all four of their Baarmutha Park matches.

In other grades, Beechworth’s B grade were humbled by top of the table Benalla, going down by nine wickets at Mayday Hills despite a 50 by Chris Nuck and C grade had the week off.
