Improving local connections for carers A SIZEABLE grant received by a local health service in partnership with other organisations is set to improve local connections and support for unpaid carers in Indigo Shire.

Community Centre, Indigo Shire Council, Changing Minds Support Group and Indigo North Health recently received a $40,000 grant from Carers Victoria funded

by the Victorian Government.

The partnership was one of 25 groups/organisations across Victoria to receive a grant between $20,000 and $40,000.

The new program aims to reduce isolation, improve health and wellbeing, and connect carers to

their local communities.

Carers Victoria chief executive officer Judith Abbott said grants would support carers from all walks of life from a young carer looking after a sibling, parent or grandparent, caring for a person with a disability, mental illness/issue or addiction to a person car-

ing for a family member or loved one with a chronic illness.

BHS health promotion and community engagement officer Gabriella Tange said a project officer will help co-design the project together with a partnership advisory group.

Beechworth Secondary College graduates mark a milestone

By CORAL COOKSLEY BEECHWORTH Secondary College (BSC) Year 12 students marked a milestone with a Valedictory dinner held at the Grand Oaks Resort to celebrate the end of their secondary studies.

Family and friends as well as BSC staff and past students on November 15 joined 20 excited Year 12 graduates embarking on new chapters in their life.

Principal Trish Broom said some students had been three or four generations family members who had studied at the school with some grandparents joining the celebrations on the night as well.

Former student Ellen Larkin now the oral hygienist at the dentist in town delivered the past student speech.

Among other presentations were Rachael Castricum and Karl Mahr with the senior leader speech while Lexi Bussell and Cooper Waller delivered the school captain speech.

Will said besides learning, students had grown as people.

“Be it working together for a class, or dealing with

an issue, the things we have learnt from each other will be useful for the next part of our lives,” he said.

Will said the pandemic had been a hardship crushing the middle school experience but there had been some challenges along the way.

“Yet not a single one of us here tonight has done this alone,” he said.

“We are each celebrating the completion of what has been the most significant portion of our lives because of our families who have supported us through the highs and lows of a very big year and those who have believed in our futures and told us we could do it, even if there was very little to prove that.

“And of course, our teachers, who have guided us with patience and enthusiasm which is so vital to sustain a class of hyper emotional and sleep deprived teens.

“This year has proven to us all that hard work and dedication to what we find important pays off, and not only in grades but in the enrichment of our capabilities to strive for our best.”

Ms Broom said speeches from students had been from the heart.

Inaugural award fosters young creatives within Indigo Shire

By CORAL COOKSLEY THE EXCITED winner of an inaugural Ian Jones Award worth $2000 by philanthropic organisation Albert and Barbara Tucker Foundation has valued support given to young creatives within Indigo Shire.

The Ian Jones Award for 16 to 30-year-olds encourages and supports a young person’s creativity in any media where they contribute to cultural life and identity of Indigo Shire.

The first-time award had the theme ‘reflecting the past and present life in your community.’

The award is part of the Friend of the Burke Museum’s Ian Jones Memorial Australian Identity program included highly commended recipients as well as a ‘People’s Choice’ winner.

Award winner Rutherglen High School’s Finn Welsh said opening up opportunities for young people with different creative talents is important for the community.

Finn said her work titled ‘Extinction: a work in progress’ focussed

on the depleting number of birds in the area.

“It started with a regent honeyeater, a brolga and a barking owl,” she said.

Her highly imaginative piece represented the cycle of endangerment and extinction.

Finn with highly commended recipients Madeleine Sandow and Samara Bright from Beechworth Secondary College, Rutherglen High School’s Maggie McGhee with the Noah Phillips-Trabant selected for the People’s Choice award were among an overall 15 entries.

Samara with her musician composition ‘Close to Me’ paid tribute to the support and friendship she has found since moving to Beechworth.

Madeleine, Maggie and Noah were unable to be present on the night.

Madeleine’s artwork in charcoal ‘Burden of Care’ portraying a nurse said the award gave young people in the shire an opportunity to create something they love.

She said the nurses at the former Mayday Hills hospital and how they spent a lot of time car-

ing for the town had inspired her.

Maggie McGhee’s work ‘Everchanging Skies’ of a group of four photographs taken at sunset around her home town of Rutherglen, creatively stitched with scenes reflecting special memories.

Noah Phillips-Trabant with his work titled ‘Laundromat’ in acrylic reflected the joy young people find in each other’s company in less than traditional surroundings.

Award winning actor and guest speaker Adam Zwar travelled from Queensland for the event.

Mr Zwar artist delivered an entertaining account of his experiences as a former journalist with anecdotes, his career as well as an insight into the special friendship between his late father Desmond a well-known journalist and Ian Jones.

“Dad would have been over the moon about his name representing an award for creative endeavour because he had always supported creative people right throughout his whole career.”

Friends of the Burke’s Museum’s project manager for the event John Baines said Friends of the Burke Museum ‘s role is to support the Museum’s work.

He said the award is an extension of the theme around the ‘People of Beechworth’ exhibition running at museum is running at the Museum.

“We hope to identify carers within our community who are not currently connected into existing networks,” she said.

“We know there are people caring for others in the community and we want to find out who they are, understand their needs, and support and provide them with opportunities for connection with one another as well.

“We want to create opportunities, so carers are not isolated and have a support network.”

“It will also give us an opportunity to identify existing structures and networks across Indigo Shire.”

Ms Tange said the collaborative project gave neighbourhood houses, health services and existing carer support groups that might already exist the chance to connect with each other as well.

She said the project gave the partnership group a chance to have conversations about barriers such as financial ones where support can be given to carers to join in without any financial burden if a participation barrier.

She said the project is also an opportunity to explore support for people in carer roles with conversations around doing things for themselves where it could be a physical activity such as a walk or another for their own mental health well-being.

“It’s something we should be look at as a community and how we can support carers to do that,” she said.

Ms Tange said the outcome for the six-month contract with the project officer will be design, delivery, implementation and evaluation by the end of June next year.

EXCITED Chiltern Fire brigade volunteers will take delivery of a state-of-the-art fire tanker with a $394,000 government grant announced last week.

The brigade is one of a large number of units across the state sharing in $11million of grant funding though the Victorian Government’s Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP) handed to CFA Brigades to purchase new equipment to help protect their communities.

CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said VESEP grants helped to provide brigades with significant funding for life-saving equipment.

“This program provides $2 for every $1 of funding from the brigade and helps with the purchase of equipment such as vehicles, trucks, tankers, watercraft, trailers, and can also include minor facility improvements,” chief officer Heffernan said.

He said government contribution towards equipment meant brigades had an incentive to fundraise in their communities and apply for a VESEP grant.

Mr Heffernan said special access grants are also available to provide a further financial boost for brigades facing challenges with fundraising.

Chiltern Fire brigade captain Shannon Beacom said the brigade has contributed $61,000 to the purchase with funds raised

He said the dual cab fourwheel drive with a front mounted monitor (water cannon) on the bull bar with a control joystick in the cabin replaces a 20-year-old single cab two-wheel drive.

“The new vehicle really increases fire safety and gets firefighters off the back of the truck into the cab,” he said.

“With four-wheel drive capa-

bilities we can access areas in surrounding national parks.”

Captain Beacom said the Chiltern Fire Brigade has four trucks with two funded by the CFA while the other two had been funded by the community and the VESEP grant program.

Delivery of the new truck from overseas is expected in around 12 to 18 months’ time.

Community Christmas cheer

By CORAL COOKSLEY CHRISTMAS is set to sparkle for the community with a tasty twocourse sit down lunch on Christmas Day in the Beechworth Memorial Servicemen’s Hall or an option for a take away meal with hampers given out as well.

A volunteer organising team with representatives from Beechworth Health Service, Indigo Shire Council, the Salvation Army, Quercus Beechworth and the community have been working to help create a special festive event for locals with the help of other volunteers.

Community representative and coordinator for 14 years Christine Cansfield-Smith said planning had gone ahead swiftly.

“We have a blueprint really from having done it now for such a long time,” she said.

“Planning is centralised at Beechworth Health Service but we have a really good active committee who each do their bit.

“We’re catering this year for 160 people but that’s not all sit down.

“Anyone can come to the lunch and people are welcome to call and register their names.”

They can also call and arrange to have their hamper delivered to their home.

For those dining in Christine said it’s a great atmosphere and the lunch also catered for people who maybe on their own.

“It’s very easy going, relaxing and people really enjoy the day,” she said.

The Allan Labor Government is rebuilding, repairing and resurfacing roads right across north east Victoria as part of its regional road maintenance blitz, keeping drivers and freight on the move.

The chief executive officer said the Australian government has started to commit resources for a national social enterprise strategy.

World social enterprise day celebrated BEECHWORTH Montessori School’s Minnie, Isaac and Izzy showcased their young entrepreneurial skills when they joined World Social Enterprise Day celebrations hosted by the ACRE at the Old Beechworth gaol earlier this month.

The students have a dog bandanas and screen print t-shirt business to help raise funds for their causes such as an animal shelter, Australian wildlife and animal rescue.

The trio were among fellow students from their

school in the Social Enterprise Schools program run by the Australian Centre for Rural Enterprise (ACRE).

The annual event held on November 16 every year raises awareness of social enterprise.

Representatives from local social enterprises Indigo Power and Old Beechworth Gaol took part too.

School principal Ben Sockett said students are part of an international community where people work towards the UN Global Goals to make the world a better place for all.

“One of the key objectives for Montessori education is

we want our students to see they can make a difference to the world through social enterprise businesses with causes they would like to support rather than just being for profit,” he said.

ACRE chief executive officer Matt Pfahlert said Montessori was one of the first schools in Australia to embark on social enterprise learning when the program ran for the first time nine years ago.

Mr Pfahlert said social enterprise is about businesses tackling a social or environmental issue.

Time to let your guard down

By CORAL COOKSLEY THE first all ages and abilities open mic night ‘Let Your Guard Down’ kicks off on December 7 in Yackandandah.

Local coffee traders The Guard has partnered with Arts Yackandandah to stage three events over summer.

Local songwriter and Arts Yackandandah volunteer, Candice McLeod said the event will bring the community together through a combination of the arts and good food.

“These evenings are open to emerging artists, poets, musicians and comedians of all ages to share their creations in a fun, safe, inclusive and supportive space,” she said.

The Guard owner Gary Menzies-Browne will speak how the business has gone from coffee trader to stage creator for the event on the night.

“Although by day I make a good brew, I am also an artist of sorts as a musician, photographer and poet,” he said.

“We’re creating this space where passionate artists of all ages and abilities are given the support and encouragement they need to feel whole and free in their expression.

“I’m so excited to share space with my community of people beyond the coffee machine, who are brave enough to create and share something powerful, simply out of a collection of sounds and feelings.”

With a history of community music work with youth in Central Australia, Candice said an all-ages open stage is important for the community.

“When community of all ages and generations gather for the same purpose, magic can happen with layers like an onion peeled back,” she said.

“We can express ourselves freely, because the person next to us just jumped up on the stage first.

“These nights nights are a reminder of our vast diversity, but also of our simple, sweet same-ness.”

Candice said the event is safe and inclusive with the aim to empower performers of all ages.

The first of three open stage events will be held next week from 7pm to 9pm then January 11 and February 8 at The Guard, 6 Turntable Lane in the Yack Station precinct.

A complimentary communal supper will be provided by The Guard, supported by Arts Yackandandah from 7pm.

Arts Yackandandah is a not-for-profit, community-run organisation, with the aim to support and foster the arts within the community.

COMMUNITY FOCUSSED: Chiltern’s Shannon Beacom loves his volunteer role as Chiltern Fire Brigade’s captain helping - and meeting - amazing people.

More than just meeting people’s expectations SHANNON Beacom was born in Albury and has spent his entire life in Chiltern except for a short time when he moved out town for work in 2017 but then returned to the area two years later.

What do you do workwise?

I am a road maintenance and construction labourer with Indigo Shire Council based in Rutherglen. I have worked with the council since 2012 where I undertook a traineeship in civil construction.

I left the shire for two and a half years to pursue a career as a police custody officer with Victoria Police before returning to work with Indigo Shire Council.

What brought you to your role/ career?

I found my passion for civil construction as an 18-year-old when one of my old lieutenants from my fire brigade knew I was looking for work and got me a job labouring for an earthmoving company, which was supposed to be for two days but ended up being two years.

What do you love about your work?

The variety. As I work in a small council, we get to undertake a huge range of tasks.

I also enjoy working in the

Shannon Beacom community, interacting with people and trying to meet their expectations.

What do you do in the community?

I am the Chiltern Fire Brigade captain. I have been a member for 19 years as I started in the junior brigade as a 13-year-old. I love being involved in the CFA as I get to help people, challenge myself and meet some amazing people. The CFA has shaped the person I am today teaching me life lessons and resilience.

Is there an important community issue that you think needs addressing?

The lack of employment opportunities in Chiltern is a real issue. I see many young families move away from the town, so they do not have to travel for work. If there was an industrial park/ business park and a retirement village built in Chiltern this would provide enough jobs to see people remain and see the town stay sustainable.

What do you see as a national issue?

The cost of living is gripping society

these days. My wife and I are fortunate enough to have a mortgage, but I see more and more young families not being able to purchase a home and with the tight housing market not even being able to find a rental.

If the person you would most like to meet came to Indigo Shire (past or present), or was already here, who would that be, what would you show them, and why?

It would be my wife’s late grandmother so she could meet her great grandchildren and see the place we call home. As she was from the Riverland in South Australia, I would take her on a family trip to show her around the forests as they are so different from the Riverland and along Chiltern’s Conness Street so she could see the heritage buildings, and go to my favourite Chiltern Bakery.

What book are you reading?

Throughout my life I have never been a big reader but as I have grown older and now have two young children, I find myself reading kids’ books nearly every second night.

As I am sure many parents would relate – you find yourself reading the same books quite regularly with the Dr Seuss ones being quite a favourite of my little girl’s.

Thrilling final round to Club Championships

By DYLAN POOL THE final round of the Beechworth Golf Club Championships was played last Sunday in conditions that could only be described as a lot better than what was forecast.

The daily winner was Darren Edwards with a score of 70/3/67 on a countback from Dylan Pool who had exactly the same score.

Ball winners were Jarryd Pritchard with 73/5/68, Jacob Howard 82/12/70 and Xavier Palamarczuk 74/4/70.

Nearest to pins went to Phil Pelgrim on the third, Xavier Palamarczuk on the seventh and Rod Shaw on the 10th.

In the Club Championships we had an exciting finish in the B grade, with Graeme Cordy and Jacob Howard tied after the three rounds on a total of 257.

This resulted in a three hole playoff, with Jacob Howard recording an even par score for the three holes, winning by one shot from Graeme.

Club Championships results: A grade champion: Vaughan Saunders 211 (71,68,72). Runner up: Dylan Pool 219 (73,76,70). Darren Edwards 221 (76,75,70).

Riders set for Tour of Bright

MORE than 400 cyclists from across the country will descend on Bright and the Alpine Shire this weekend to compete in the Tour of Bright’s 27th running in its 30 year history.

The largest club race in Australia is the major event on the Alpine Cycling Club calendar, with two days of racing along the roads of Bright, the Kiewa Valley, Wandiligong and iconic Mount Buffalo.

Hailed as the greatest stage race in the country, the purely volunteer-run event features three stages of road racing excitement and a prize pool worth $20,000.

Head of the organising committee Stuart Tripp and his team has been hard at work organising every little detail for the hundreds of eager participants this weekend.

“It’s probably Australia’s greatest professional stage race for amateurs,” he said.

“There are 10 different grades within the race: A, B and C male and female; masters A, B and C, and Masters 6+.

“All proceeds go back to the club, even though it’s a silver level AusCycling event, and a stage of the Victorian Road Series, it’s still local-run.

“It showcases the best of what the North East has to offer, you have some beautiful country you go through during the race.

“It’s a tough race too, it’s not a race you just sign up to do a week before with no training, you have to train for it.”

Stage one commences on Saturday, with cyclists travelling along the Great Alpine Road to Ovens before heading over Rosewhite

Tripp said volunteers to help run the event would always be needed, which the club struggles to get.

“What a lot of people don’t understand about the Tour of Bright is that it’s essentially a club race

– it’s all staffed by volunteers, all run by volunteers,” he said.

“We have 161 volunteer shift positions over the two days - it’s huge, there’s no event company putting this race on, it’s the community.

“There’s been a decline in road cycling that we’re trying to address – the difference with the Tour of Bright is its iconic desti-

nation, tough course and its openness to all riders, anyone can have a crack.

“There’s a $20,000 prize pool for the race, so it pays out quite a lot for the winners.

“It’s going to be a beautiful weekend for the race.”

The Wanderers sit third on the overall A grade ladder, and while they’ve posted strong scores and bowled teams out well, they haven’t picked up consistent wins.

While their two-day scheduled match will be played as a 40 over game this weekend, Surrey said he backed his team to perform regardless of the format.

“It’s not a big difference, really,” he said.

“You get through a lot of the amount of overs, whether it’s 75 or 40, so I don’t think too much will change.

“Most teams struggle to bat their 75, there aren’t too many that go and bat their full 75.

“You can plan all you like, but if you get the basics right, you’re generally going to win most games of cricket.

“We’ve been in most games, the four games we’ve played.

“Kayde (Surrey) has batted pretty well, Clancy Ellet’s having a really good season.”

The Wanderers will face a new-look Benalla side which has troubled a few sides, having picked up solid early-season wins over Rovers United Bruck and Delatite.

“They’re a bit of an unknown, but it should be good,” Surrey said.

“It’s hard to know, they’re a completely new side compared to what they were last

year, I don’t know too much about the players.

“We’ll try to control what we can, and get what we can going in the right direction, we’ll react on the run to how players are batting and bowling.”
