WHEN you cross the threshold into Christine Meunier’s Wangaratta home the first thing you see is a cheerful doormat decorated with pictures of horses. It’s hardly surprising as Christine, who has just published her first novel Horse Country - has had an affinity for horses for much of her life. And since the age of 14, her constant companion has been her cheeky, but faithful horse, Pride. He was so named because when he was younger he used to throw her off his back, so Pride “came before a fall”, Christine laughed. “He was very good at throwing me out of the saddle,” she said. “He’s very cantankerous, but he’s not mean or vicious.” Christine’s love of horses stems from their straightforward nature. “You’ll never stop learning about horses,” she said. “They’re all different, just like people. “They’ll never lie to you – if something’s bothering them, they will react. “There’s something very powerful about them.” Her early love of riding blossomed into a wish to make horses her career, and she moved to Wangaratta to do a diploma in horse breeding through Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE’s National Centre for Equine Education (NCEE). continued page |
