CHINA COMMITMENT: Devondale Murray Goulburn (MG) has relaunched its Devondale long life milk (UHT) in China

reinforcing the co-operative’s intentions to maximise the opportunities gained by the Australia-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The relaunch and expansion of the Devondale UHT range in China is part of the farmer co-operative’s strategy to capture the value of the increasing demand by Asian consumers for safe, reliable dairy foods. MG’s managing director Gary Helou said the recent FTA will improve the competitive positioning of Australian dairy foods into China but dairy farmers must have ownership of the supply chain and brands to capture “maximum benefit�, otherwise the value will be lost to others in the chain.

THE issue of how to manage Johnes’ disease will not go away until decisions at a national level deliver a consistent approach across all states of Australia, according to some hard-hitting North East Victorian cattle farmers.

They are among many cattle producers across the country who are pushing for a national solution to an issue that they say is unnecessarily destroying cattle studs and lives – where 30 suicides have already occurred as a result of inadequate compensation and inaccurate testing.

Mansfield cattle breeder Don Lawson has been calling on the Victorian Government to undertake a wide-ranging, independent enquiry into Johnes’ disease for years.

Mr Lawson, who has a Master of Science degree and has been awarded an OAM for services to the beef industry, said that the entire current Johnes’ policy is awed as there

Mr Lawson says that Australia’s approach has ignored the fundamentals of good policy planning, causing enormous ďŹ nancial and social pressures, including anxiety, depression and suicide. “There is no cure vaccination, however, sheep producers have a management tool vaccine and cattle producers have nothing,â€? Mr Lawson said. “The disease has no impact on overseas trade contrary to bureaucratic claims based on incompetent science. “This has become a great mess with no logic and no socalled national policy. „ Continued page 4

Having grown up on a 10 acre hobby farm as a child with six siblings, Miss Bassett was not set on a career in agriculture, instead working in the retail industry for a couple of years after leaving school. “When I ďŹ nished high school I really didn’t know

what I wanted to do so I started working in retail. “After a couple of years I left my job and I didn’t know what to do next so I did some work on the farm at home and picked up some relief milking, but once I got involved and realised there was a lot more to the agriculture industry and the dairy industry than just milking, I just really loved it,� she said.

Receiving twice as many applications as last year, United Dairyfarmers of Victoria (UDV) president Tyran Jones said it was very difďŹ cult selecting only six recipients. “The group of six were selected on their capacity to grow from the experience, their passion and demonstrated dedication to the dairy industry. “We wanted to give this opportunity to people who would gain the most from the trip. “We want people who are going to take this opportunity and give back through their involvement with the industry,â€? Mr Jones said.

The study tour, funded by the Gardiner Foundation and organised by UDV, leaves Melbourne in February 2015 where the six recipients tour the South Island of New Zealand over eight days.

The future dairy industry leaders will visit dairy farms, research and processing facilities and agricultural sites to meet the framework of learning identiďŹ ed by the participants.

KERRILYN Bassett was “absolutely shockedâ€? to ďŹ nd out she was selected for the dairy industry’s 2015 New Zealand study tour.

The 23-year old Kyabram farm assistant is currently undertaking a CertiďŹ cate III in Agriculture at GOTAFE in Shepparton while working on a dairy farm managed by her father.

Miss Bassett decided to apply for the study tour as she felt it would be a good way to see how the industry works in New Zealand and to possibly adapt some new methods into the farm she works on. “I haven’t been in the industry long, so I thought applying for the study tour would be a good way to see how the industry works over there and to see how we can adjust our farming maybe, and to see the different ways other farmers do it. “I thought it would be beneďŹ cial to see how it all works and to get as much experience as possible. “I also really want to try and promote the dairy industry to younger people to make it more appealing and to try and ďŹ nd other ways to promote it,â€? Miss Bassett said.

Calling the current policies “socially irresponsible”, Mr Lawson said that the control and management of the disease had been led by those seeking to eradicate Johnes.

There are three recognised strains of Johnes’ disease in Australia -cattle strain (bovine - BJD), sheep strain (ovine - OJD) and bison strain.

The strain most commonly found in sheep is now the most common strain in infected beef cattle herds in south eastern Australia.

Attempting to eradicate the disease from the bovine population is akin to attempting to eradicate the common cold from the human population. believed to have different levels of the bovine strain.

Johnes’ disease was deregulated in Victoria and Tasmania in 2012.

According to most cattle producers, the problem is that different and inconsistent rules apply for the transfer of cattle between zones.

In Victoria, stamp duty on all cattle transactions within the state is charged at a rate of five cents per $20 or $1.75 for a $700 sale.

Stock agents and abattoirs collect the stamp duty and remit it to the State Revenue Office each month, and it is then declared on all vendor accounts.

The significant economic losses that have occurred are not from the cattle actually contracting Johnes, but from the quarantined properties which causes the cancellation of sales, preventing cattle breeders from trading.

The Australian Registered Cattle Breeders Association (ARCBA) has recently adopted a total deregulation policy.

ARCBA members are made up of cattle breeders who have been severely damaged by the current control and eradication policies.

And according to ARCBA, one of the major problems appears to be getting all the farmer organisations to agree on

a solution that will benefit all sides of the agricultural equation.

NSW Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson is in full support of deregulating the management of BJD nationally, having stated that BJD should be a management issues for cattle breeders, supported by the availability of vaccination.

Ms Hodgkinson said that to do this, however, a reliable test needs to be developed and made available to cattle breeders.

She said that the complexity of the situation whereby a national-type scheme is being administered by the various state agriculture departments urgently needed to be “harmonised” to deregulate the system.

Retired Berrigan Hereford producer John Yelland said that he had been testing cattle for more than 50 years and believed there was no hope of eradicating or controlling BJD and that “the most terrifying part of it all” is the control measures rather than the disease.

“It is a sword dangling over every seed stock producer in Australia because he doesn’t know when he is going to be out of business,” Mr Yelland said.

“A Queensland outfit has had its turnover dropped on bulls alone from $5 million to zero.

“It has cost in the vicin-

ity of about $70 million in total – and for what?

“It’s just getting nowhere.

“There was a study done in New Zealand recently and the outcome was that it is easily handled by farmers and they can’t see it as a terribly important issue anyway.

“The worst that will happen to any farm is that one or two cows are infected with BJD and you have to get rid of them.

“The financial impact is much better in terms of getting rid of two cows compared to slaughtering an entire herd or putting the stud in quarantine.

“Just leave it to the producers and run it the same as New Zealand.

“Decommission the whole damn thing,” he said.

Mr Yelland said that some producers are now deciding not to test because they are in fear of being ruined by a false positive test.

He added that on one occasion when he was testing his cattle he sent a sample from the same beasts to separate laboratories in NSW and Victoria and got two different outcomes.

“With a test like that, everyone is sitting under the sword and its level of importance is negligent,” Mr Yelland said.

“In South America and New Zealand, our socalled competitors aren’t

bothering about it at all, so why are we?

“The disease is trifling; it’s the control that is the issue.

“Just deregulate BJD totally.

“The blokes that have to enforce this have no idea what they are doing.

“The government need to wake up.

“Surely someone has got blood on their hands.”

A spokesperson from the office of Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said that both governments and industry recognised that the current regulatory approach involving the quarantine of properties and movement restrictions between zones “may need to be revisited”.

A two day BJD government-industry workshop convened by Cattle Council Australia is scheduled for February 2015 to discuss the issues and target development of a sustainable, industry-led approach to future BJD management.

“The mid-term review of the 2015 National Johnes’ Disease Control Program has been brought forward to early 2015 as an initial step in reviewing and refreshing Australia’s approach,” the departmental spokesperson said.

“The Animal Health Committee has called for a benefit-cost analysis to focus on prospectively informing decision making on new options for national BJD management.

“The Commonwealth government’s role is to maintain, gain and improve export market access for live animals and their products by negotiating with our trading partners.

“As properties affected

by BJD can be ineligible to export cattle or genetic material, the government is working to minimise the impact on exports to BJD sensitive markets.”

GOLD WISH: Lee Kernaghan and Keely Johnson are hoping to raise money for Make-A-Wish through sales of their new single.

“I wanted to write and record a song with Lee as I’ve always been a huge fan and have loved his songs for years,� Keely said. “Turn This To Gold is a way for me to raise awareness for childhood cancer and also raise money for Make-A-Wish.�

In a heart-warming twist, Keely requested that all proceeds from her song go to Make-AWish to help grant wishes to other seriously ill children.

“Meeting Lee and recording this song with him was one of the best days of my life. “I couldn’t stop shaking when he walked into the room. “I really hope that through Turn This To Gold, I can raise money to help more sick kids have their wishes come true,� she said.

In her local community, Keely is a well-known face, often seen busking to raise money for Make-

A-Wish and other childhood cancer charities.

She also makes and sells jewellery and so far has raised a staggering $21,000 for charity, but is determined to raise $100,000 by 2016.

ANOTHER late night as I start to write this piece and there is a light sprinkle of rain enough to stop the juggernaut of harvesting for another day.

We had 14 millimetres earlier in the week and as usual, it was great for some – the safflower was very happy – and not for others.

Harvesting was stopped for a few days – not that it bothered us too much as we had a break down anyway and suffered the usual harvest drill of “Sorry there are none of those parts in Australia�.

You would think they would make sure there was a supply of all parts for this really busy season.

I know they can’t be expected to predict all the parts that will be required, but we always seem to break the one that is not in Aussie Land.

We have finished all our canola harvesting and as predicted last month, the results were variable.

The one thing that was consistently better than last year was the oil content.

Most loads I delivered had oil content of between 45 per cent and 47 per cent and this is much higher than last year.

The header is currently busy in New South Wales while we wait for our own wheat and barley to fully ripen.

There is still some green around the low areas, but as soon as the machine is back on the farm, it will be full steam ahead to get the cereals off.

Over the past month, we have installed our own weighbridge which should help greatly in reducing our running costs when selling produce off farm.

I will no longer have to run the truck an extra 20 kilometres to 30 kilometres to weigh each load.

With up to six canola loads delivered on a good day and dairy farmers still requiring cereals, the truck has kept me on the road.

I have been driving long distances to source cereals and it will be nice to see some new season’s grain being harvested and more readily available.

As part of the setting up of the stock and domestic pipeline, we offered to have a Country Fire Authority (CFA) tank installed on a corner of our land as they are not able to be put on roadsides.

You would think this would be an easy thing to do, but of course shire bureaucracy has once again reared its head.

We have had to give the okay to the CFA to apply for a permit for the tank to be placed.

Hopefully the go ahead is given as the fire season is almost on us once again.

With the state election already over, you will be aware of the outcome and let’s hope there will be some action in the country, but I fear that here also, there will not be much joy for the rural sector as the city-centric politicians dole out the dollars.

By JODIE FLEMING OVER the past month as I have been driving through North East Victoria on my way into the ofďŹ ce I started to notice decorated hay bales appearing in random paddocks which seemed to be multiplying.

At this time of year, when most farmers are well and truly in the thick of harvesting, I was amazed at the sight of these hay bales that had been made into all kinds of wonderful creatures and characters such as owls, spiders, pigs, Halloween pumpkins and even a minion from the movie ‘Despicable Me’, and I wondered on the how and why these were appearing, questioning how these farmers had the time to be creating such amazing new landmarks.

After some investigation, I found out what the decorating was all about.

gram- this year’s theme being ‘Regional Harvest’ - is this hay bale art touring trail involving individuals, schools and organisations.

The idea of the hay bale touring trail is to celebrate our local producers while taking visitors on a journey from Benalla around the surrounding rural towns.

Participants who decorated a hay bale are in the running to win $500, with a prize awarded for judge’s choice and people’s choice.

I would personally like to congratulate those who have decorated the hay bales that I see along the back roads from Dookie to Wangaratta.

You have made my journey very enjoyable and I have loved the experience of being able to discover newly decorated hay bales over the month and I have also enjoyed stopping on the side of the road to take photos of your very creative art work.

SHOWBAGS GALORE: Wendy Ludeman spends many hours on show day selling a vast array of showbags to many excited children, with profits made going to Dookie Primary School.

A FEW passing showers and windy conditions didn’t deter the 4000 strong crowd that attended the 131st Dookie Agricultural Show.

The number of cattle on show was up on previous years, with more than 15 Clydesdale horses on display.

Joining the Clydesdales on the main arena was pony club events, dressage and show jumping, with the Goulburn Valley Equestrian Club simultaneously holding their official show.

Once again there was an amazing display of cooking, craft, flowers, vegies and produce, and school children’s handwriting and artwork.

The display of fruit and vegetable art made by the school children was outstanding, with some fantastic imaginations used to pull off the most interesting and fabulous array of exhibits.

Also on display at this year’s show was sheep, poultry, wool fleece, vintage steam and farm machinery, and the ever-popular photographic exhibition and competition.

Attendees of all ages enjoyed the animal nursery with the many baby animals getting plenty of attention all day.

The Dookie Country Fire Authority was present thrilling the children with their fire-hose game that had balls flying in all directions and the usual side show alley which included the dodgem cars, jumping castle, funhouse, clowns, bow and arrow game, chocolate trailer, face painting and showbag stand ensured parents went home with very light wallets.

This year’s addition of the bucking bull ride was a bit hit as people meandered around the show enjoying the many food and drink options available thanks to the local Lions Club, Dookie United Football Netball Club, Tallis Wines and the various other delicious food outlets that were present.

HEATHERINGTON Park Poll Herefords stud principal Philip Gay is looking forward to the first autumn calves due next year from the stud’s new sire, Days Brigadier G.101.

Purchased in partnership with Ke-Warra Stud at the Nolaroo liquidation sale, the bull was the 2013 Dubbo Reserve Senior Champion and semen is now available for this fine beast.

As a member of Herefords Australia since 1991, Group Breedplan and classified with MN1, Heatherington Park participates in Beef Week each year where they display a selection of their livestock.

“We feature our sale bulls along with a sample of our breeding females, yearling bulls and heifers and recently weaned calves,” Mr Gay said.

“This provides the opportunity for clients to purchase their new sire on the day, gain an insight into our breeding program and to discuss matters of mutual interest.”

Alegria Poll Hereford Stud in Tallandoon consists of about 70 females purchased at dispersal sales since 2004 and the resulting progeny from AI and ET programs using leading genetics.

“We aim to breed sound, easy doing cattle with moderate birth weights, with emphasis on muscle EMA, IMF, positive fats and growth to meet commercial requirements,” Mr Mills said.

“Bulls are for sale throughout the year and especially during the Beef Week field days when sale bulls, junior bulls and representative females will be on display.”

China FTA the highlight for 2014 THE November signing of a new Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China was the most significant event for the dairy industry in the past year.

The FTA now provides increased opportunity for milk products to be sold into the largest and most influential market in the world without tariffs distorting our competitiveness.

The FTA also provides an important trading buffer from the export market distortions available to the US and European dairy industries.

The UDV and industry partners and federal parliamentary backbenchers worked hard in the hope of this positive outcome.

Australia’s export competitiveness continues to be under pressure.

By TYRAN JONES United Dairyfarmers of Victoria president Continued government and industry investment in research and development (R&D) is essential for the profitability required to meet the government’s identified dairy industry growth target of doubling production by 2030.

Already there have been substantial R&D investments in improved animal genomics and improved strains of rye grass.

UDV will continue to encourage the state and federal governments to maintain meaningful funding into these long-term investment areas.

Dairy industry growth will mostly come from increased production on existing farm land.

We have seen recent examples where increased production intensification has created local planning and neighbor amenity debates.

More production from a similar land base - and the extra jobs that will create and the export income that will be generated - can only oc-

cur with increased reliance on the additional feed being brought into that farm.

Extra milk production is needed.

Milk processors are investing heavily in new plant and technologies.

The industry estimates that about $1.5 billion has been spent or committed to ensure we maintain our manufacturing competitiveness in international markets.

Australian dairy is regarded highly for the quality of the product and the food safety systems that ensure customers be confident in their purchases.

Season wise, the year is providing challenges for most dairy farmers in the north and the west.

The shorter spring means

that those farmers will have a higher reliance on purchased feed and water and therefore a higher cost of production.

However, production is higher than in recent years, which is a positive sign for the industry.

After the relief of last year’s terrific season and climbing milk prices the situation this year is more challenging.

There is a world oversupply of some milk products that has dampened international prices.

The trade bans of sales into Russia have disrupted existing markets and that too has had some impact.

Most dairy farmers have resumed on-farm capital investments that were put on hold in 2012.

THE last 12 months have seen the Livestock Group meet with about 2,000 producers face-to-face on key policy issues such as animal welfare legislation, Ovine Johnes’ Disease and NLIS for sheep and goats.

Aside from meetings, other ways the Livestock Group is reaching producers is through regional dinners, online surveys and the establishment of wool, sheep and beef advisory groups.

The purpose of these advisory groups is to include more people in the consideration of important issues specific to these commodity areas which is then conveyed to the Livestock Council when they are considering policy.

The group has run six, highly successful livestock policy dinners over the past 12 months.

VFF Livestock Group remains committed to engaging with members and the wider farming community and these sessions provide an opportunity for people to let us know what issues are affecting their business.

One of the most exciting developments for the Livestock Group has been the inception of the VFF/NAPCO Internship, which is kindly supported by Rabobank.

This year our livestock project officers (LPOs) Jacinta Pretty and Kate Henne delivered workshops across the state for all producers on topics such as Pestivirus, Theileriosis and Vibriosis.

August saw LPOs launching their Red Meat Roadshow series at Dunkeld’s Mount Sturgeon Woolshed.

The ‘pilot’ event was well received with more than 70 guests from around the area in attendance.

The program was structured for both sheep and beef producers with concurrent sessions and joint sessions running throughout the day.

Project officers will be running another three Red Meat Roadshows across the state in the New Year, continuing to provide producers with the latest tools and information relevant to red meat production and management of endemic diseases.

Resources are also continually being developed; online resources are available at www.vff. org.au as well as farm biosecurity signs, sheep and cattle health statement booklets which feature carbon copies similar to NVD books for ease of record keeping.

Good season for grain growers in North East

By BRETT HOSKING, VFF Grains Group president with domino effects on other businesses, and economic and social impacts flowing on to farmer creditors, families and rural communities.

The VFF has undertaken a lot of work in this area in 2014, meeting with industry and lobbying government to try to improve grower payment security.

We have been pleased to see that the major traders’ payment terms have been reduced to 12-14 days end of week, down from 30 days, as a result of the pressure VFF Grains has been applying to the industry.

Many traders are willing to reduce their terms further, even to 5-7days EOW, if growers speak with them about it.

While VFF Grains continues to work with industry to reduce counterparty risk, growers should be reminded to do their due diligence themselves and only sell to someone they feel is able to pay.

Another important issue this year, especially in the context of the state election, has been freight rail investment.

Rail standardisation in the north-west, such as is proposed under the Murray Basin Rail project, will offer significant benefits in reducing supply chain costs to growers.

VFF Grains are continuing to lobby to see the standardisation rolled out across all of the state’s rail networks.

A report from the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre found that supply chain costs make up 25 per cent to 30 per cent of production costs, so improving our

freight rail network and getting more grain onto rail and off the roads will be essential for maintaining our industry’s competitiveness.

Finally, the VFF Grains Group is very proud of its work with the CFA this year to develop the Voluntary Grain Harvesting Guide.

This summer is shaping up to be another scorcher, and managing the potential fire risk on your property is critical.

This guide helps growers with decision making regarding harvesting in conditions of high fire danger, by offering an objective way of comparing the conditions in the grower’s own paddock – using temperature, relative humidity and wind speed – to determine the Grassland Fire Danger Index. Farmers have been trialling the guide in the Warracknabeal region this harvest, and the feedback that we have received so far has been positive.

IN what has been called a cruel year for many across the state the season in the North East of Victoria has been fairly kind to growers and yields are quite good in the region.

There are, however, some cases of frost damage, with the southern Riverina area around Henty seeming to be quite affected.

Beet Western Yellows Virus caused some concerns in canola crops earlier in the season but was generally well managed and didn’t have the impact in Victoria that it did in South Australia.

However, growers should still consider this in their planning for next year and talk with their agronomist about the best way to manage this virus going forward.

There are a number of seed treatments that are effective.

There have continued to be insolvencies in the grain trade this year, with Sapphire and LGL Commodities the largest traders to go under.

A peek inside Australia’s sheds IF you are looking for a unique gift this Christmas why not peek inside some of Australia’s most intriguing and varied sheds with photographer Simon Griffiths.

In celebration of the Australian landscape and lifestyle, Mr Griffiths travels throughout Australia finding a mix of all sorts of different sheds; a few ruins such as the Barossa shed in its last stages

of decay; and workplaces such as Greg Stirling’s Real Craftsman’s shed and has photographed them to collate a charming coffee table book.

“Australia is a land of sheds,” Mr Griffiths said.

“It doesn’t matter where you go, there they are – country, city, the outback, the coast, the mountains, there’s always a shed.

“A few are decorative but

most are workday spaces built to serve a purpose.

“We store things in them, people work in them, some are old, forgotten and falling apart.

AUSSIE Farmers Direct has joined the Buy a Bale Farm Rescue campaign that is helping droughtaffected farmers.

By offering support in fixing infrastructure on their properties, Aussie Farmers Direct general manager public affairs Richard Lange said the company is strongly behind the Buy a Bale Farm Rescue as it is a direct initiative that helps farmers and brings attention to their farming situation.

“Our customers support farmers everyday by shopping with us and by donating to our Foundation.

“We are going to donate $2 to Buy a Bale for every new customer that signs up and orders with us.

“Our plan is to raise enough money to donate up to 500 bales of hay,” Mr Lange said.

Aussie Farmers Direct is an independent, online retailer supplying a broad range of about 170 all-Australian products including fruit and vegetables, dairy, bread, deli items, meat, chicken, seafood, pasta and fresh gourmet meals, with free delivery to your door.

According to Buy a Bale campaign coordinator Charles Alder, farm equipment is breading down or wearing out and farmers are struggling to keep up the maintenance or repairs.

Buy a Bale is also putting together a Farmy Army, where Mr Alder is calling for volunteers across Australia who are interested in helping out in rural and remote areas.

“We’re in need of people with all skill types from cooking to mechanics, builders, plumbers, nurses and more, you name it they’re needed,” he said.

IN the 1800s, German chemist Justus von Liebig conceptualised what we now call the Law of the Minimum, or Liebig’s Law. We know it more commonly as “the leaky bucket analogy�.

This theory states that growth is not controlled by the total of resources available but by the scarcest resource, otherwise known as the intake-limiting nutrient.

In order of importance, we usually talk about oxygen, water and food in the broad sense.

The latter can be further differentiated (again in order of importance) into energy, then protein, followed by macro minerals and ďŹ nally trace minerals and vitamins.

But what happens on a broader scale?

In a paddock environment, how does the animal decide where to graze and what is the limiting factor affecting the tactics and strategy of grazing?

Utah State University scientist Fred

Provenza has dedicated his career to measuring and observing the proďŹ ling grazing patterns and behavior.

From his work, we understand that cattle introduced to a new paddock will usually explore it ďŹ rst, and then seek the best patch (most palatable and/or nutritious) to start with.

Grazing then shifts to the second best patch and so on, until the animals are removed or they run out of feed.

Of course, many external factors control this process including: s LOCATION AND QUALITY OF WATERING points; s AVAILABILITY OF SHADE AND OR OTHER shelter; s THE SUPPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES being used; s TOPOGRAPHY AND LANDSCAPE AND s SOCIAL INTERACTION AND DOMINANCE within the herd and neighboring animals.

Each grazing decision represents a trade-off: is it better to settle for a less palatable patch of grass or burn more energy walking to a more nutritious area?

In those instances where pasture

(or energy) is in limited supply, animals either stay near water (being the primary rate-limiting nutrient) or will utilise (or more accurately, substitute) a supplement as an energy/ food supply.

In the case of Anipro, substitution indicates that there is either not enough pasture available or it is too far away from water to be efďŹ ciently utilised.

In fact, the placement of an Anipro trough can have a signiďŹ cant impact on grazing patterns.

Where the trough is located in relation to shade, water and even a neighboring herd can affect what part of a paddock is grazed ďŹ rst.

While in practice, troughs are typically placed close to water to ensure they are readily found by the target ANIMALS SUBSEQUENT RELOCATION OF these troughs should take into account these other inuencing factors.

Therefore, in simple terms, the answer is yes - cattle do think about their dinner and as suppliers of Anipro (a palatable, appetite-promoting supplement), we actually have a marked inuence on the thought process.

THIS summer, checking Fire Danger Ratings to understand the daily fire risk is an important way to protect yourself and your family from fire.

According to Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley, Fire Danger Ratings give you information on how dangerous a fire would be if one started. “As the ratings increase, so does your risk of fire,� Mr Lapsley said. “This summer, you could be at risk of uncontrollable fires on Severe, Extreme and Code Red days. “Talk to your household about where you’ll go on these days and when you’ll leave,� he said.

Fire Danger Ratings are based on the weather conditions and other factors, such as how much dry vegetation there is.

Hot, dry, windy days are the worst weather conditions for fire.

Ratings are forecast using Bureau of Meteorology data up to four days in advance, and are declared by the fire weather district.

The three most important ratings to look out for are Severe, Extreme and Code Red, although fires can start on days when the ratings are lower.

Code Red days are the worst conditions for

a grassfire or bushfire and means that if a fire was to start, it would be uncontrollable.

Most houses are not designed or constructed to withstand Code Red conditions.

Leaving high-risk areas the night before a Code Red day or early in the day is the safest option.

A Severe or Extreme fire danger rating means that if a fire starts and takes hold, it will be unpredictable and fast moving.

If you live in a high-risk area and your house is not prepared and you are not able to defend it, leaving early in the day is your safest option. “Last summer, there were only five days where fire danger spiked as Severe to Extreme levels, and there were no Code Red days,�

Mr Lapsley said. “Code Red days are rare and serious, but fires can still start and run on days of Very High and Severe Fire Danger Rating. “Don’t take any chances this summer – keep your family safe and check the Fire Danger Ratings daily.�

Aircraft sent to fight fires THE Country Fire Authority (CFA) response to bush and grassfires will be beefed up this summer, with an aircraft sent out to all fires.

The “predetermined dispatch” system has been rolled out statewide for the fire season after being trialled in Bendigo over the past few years.

CFA’s District 23 operations officer Terry Heafield said the new system means aircraft will be called to the scene at the same time as firefighters working as part of ground crews.

“The pilot will also get a page for the same call,” he said.

“Hitting it harder and faster will decrease the potential of the fire becoming out of control.”

In the past, ground crews have only called aircraft once firefighters have attended and assessed the scene, meaning it can take a while before they reach a fire.

Mr Heafield said aircraft in Bendigo were in the air an average of 8.4 minutes after getting the call.

He said people can expect to see more CFA aircraft around this summer so anyone with concerns should visit the CFA website to find out what fires are nearby.

The North East currently has five helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft at Benalla, Mansfield, Albury and Shepparton.

Clean up containers before bushfire season arrives AUSTRALIA’S agvet chemical container recycling program drumMUSTER is calling on farmers in North East Victoria to clean up their properties of empty drums in the leadup to bushfire season. drumMUSTER national program manager Allan McGann said stockpiles of empty containers caught in a blaze could cause potential hazards for firefighters.

“Not only will you be clearing your properties of unsightly containers, you can also avoid having to deal with them during a potential crisis,” he said. drumMUSTER also helps support local fire service volunteer groups who collect and inspect drums for their region.

Groups like Maindample CFA can afford new gear and equipment for the team thanks to collecting drums through drumMUSTER. drumMUSTER consultant John Knight said for each container that farmers deliver, the CFA are one step closer to buying lifesaving equipment.

“The Maindample CFA collection has become a vital source of funding for the volunteer firefighters.

“For example, 3000 drums converts to $750 for the CFA,” he said.

However, councils waste management officer Rebecca Kirley advised that if support for the next collection in Maindample does not increase, then the service will become obsolete.

There are several key steps to take that will ensure your risk assessment is thorough and effective.

Identify potential hazards Every working environment has hazards and some are more obvious than others.

“Taking the time to understand exactly what the hazards are is the first proactive step towards producing your risk assessment,” Mr Houghton said.

“Make sure you assess every element of your business, from the physical working environment to the equipment and substances you use.”

Who will be affected?

Once you are confident you have identified the hazards, it is time to think carefully about who is most likely to be affected.

Preventing risks Not all risks can be prevented, but you may find there are steps you can take to mitigate them.

“Keep it on the agenda as your business will benefit from an ongoing focus on addressing ways of minimising risk,” Mr Houghton said.

“Schedule reviews at regular intervals or when significant changes are made to your organisation, such as a largescale recruitment drive or the purchase of new equipment.”
