A recent Senate inquiry into the effect of market consolidation on the red meat processing sector has many beef producers and industry groups insisting on a review into the industry that has processors making considerably higher profits than the producers.

Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) livestock president Ian Feldtmann said that farmers want a simple, clear adaptive and resilient market structure that can deal with the livestock market as it exists now and is capable of keeping pace with the evolving consolidation and rationalisation in the processor and retailer market.

“Critically, the focus of the recommendations of this inquiry to the Senate must be about the basics of transparency, price discovery and enforceable market conduct as a minimum and necessary condition for a fair market.

“There is a definite lack of transparency regarding feedback to the producer regarding the actual measured performance of the product trusted to the processor.

argued against haphazard buybacks,� he said. “The cap will allow farmers to feel more certain about the future, knowing that water will not continue to be ripped out of agricultural production.�

Federal Member for Murray Sharman Stone said irrigation water in particular needs to be located with agriculture to ensure its production value for food and ďŹ bre production is fully realised. “We have been in need to change the position of water policy for some time and it had to be removed from the environment portfolio,â€? she said. “Water is predominantly an agricultural issue which belongs just as much to the primary producers of the MDB as it does to the environment.â€?

AG R I C U LT U R A L groups and leaders across Australia have welcomed the decision by Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull to merge water policy into the agriculture portfolio at Federal level.

In what has been a successful month for farmers in terms of claiming certainty in their water allocation with the passing of Commonwealth legislation to cap water buyback in the Murray Darling Basin Plan (MDBP) at 1500 gigalitres (GL), the coming together of both water and agriculture in the one portfolio has farmers more conďŹ dent that the Federal Government is serious about agriculture’s future.

National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) chief executive ofďŹ cer Simon Talbot said the new agreement, which includes other areas affecting agriculture including adding water into the portfolio demonstrates a welcome focus on the needs of rural, regional and remote Australia.

Mr Talbot said that while the text of the agreement has not been made public, the NFF understands the key promises that have been made include ongoing funding for the mobile blackspots program, movement of water into the agriculture portfolio, favourable consideration of the effects test and an ongoing commitment to the inland rail project. “Obviously the proof of the pudding will be in the eating,� he said. “We will be watching closely to ensure delivery, but at first glance The Nationals appear to have secured some important wins for rural Australia.

Wine tax rejected THE Winemakers’ Federation of Australia has rejected calls by the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) to increase wine taxes.

Federation chief executive Paul Evans said FARE’s claims were unhelpful at a time when the Federal Government has committed to working with the wine sector on a recovery plan.

“The government’s WET rebate discussion paper and the senate inquiry currently underway are opportunities to develop a sensible and informed wine tax reform plan and to fund initiatives to build demand and restore profitability,” he said.

“It is unhelpful to call out for tax increases that would severely impact regional communities.”

SUMMER PROOFING USING PROVEN SUMMER FORAGES With their shallow root systems, ryegrasses can struggle to mine enough moisture during hot dry summer conditions, and so production suffers.

By incorporating summer cropping into your system, you can mitigate potential feed deficits during dry summer conditions.

So what crop to grow? The two most commonly grown summer forage crops are summer turnips and chicory.

Turnips are a single graze forage crop. The earliest maturing variety available is Marco, which at 7-10 weeks from sowing to grazing provides bulk feed, fast. As a result, it is less time out of pasture, can produce two crops in one season, or be late sown. Marco produces large bulbs which have very good storage capability.

The other alternative is Chico chicory – a perennial multi-graze summer forage crop which is relatively drought tolerant, cheap to grow and produces large volumes of very high quality feed. While many farmers use Chico chicory as a specialist short term summer, autumn forage crop, it can persist for up to 3 years. Chico is thoroughly proven and reliable and great for enhancing livestock performance, be it milk yields or fattening livestock. It is little wonder that Chico chicory is often referred to as rocket fuel for livestock.

“When processors recover at least 22 per cent of the price they pay for cattle just by selling waste by-products, you start wondering about their profit margins.

“Suddenly the gap between beef retail prices and cattle saleyard prices has begun to take on a new meaning,” Mr Feldtmann said.

He added that with Australian agriculture on the brink of becoming globalised the red meat value chain lacks any suitable framework for this “evolution at its most susceptible phase”.

The boycott of the Barnawartha saleyards earlier this year was the catalyst for the inquiry, with the VFF submitting that the boycott was a symptom not the main cause of the underlying problems (JF1) in the livestock markets.

VFF livestock manager David Picker said the Barnawartha boycott showed that there is no level playing field in the Victorian livestock markets.

“It also shows what happens when you reduce the number and diversity of competitors in a market – you reduce choice.

“Lack of choice led to the Barnawartha boycott, it also led to the way Coles was able to deal with its producers as detailed in the recent ACCC federal court case,” Mr Picker said.

The lobby group emphasised that there is no difference at a basic level between a commodities exchange (ie, livestock market) and a securities exchange, with both being a platform where buyers and sellers interact to set market prices.

“However, while our

securities market has world class regulations and other countries benchmark their securities market by reference to ours, our livestock market is devoid of any regulation and governance,” Mr Picker said.

The VFF submitted that there are three key components to create a fair market – price transparency, accountability and independent governance structure.

The VFF also submitted that enhancements of competition law along the lines of those proposed by the Harper Inquiry will not solve the problems confronted by livestock producers.

“Subjecting producers to expensive and prolonged competition law actions in courts is unsustainable and will be counterproductive for all participants in the industry,” he said.

Indigo Shire mayor Bernard Gaffney also attended the public hearing after the Indigo council earlier this year decided to put a submission to the inquiry following concerns raised by beef producers in relation to the introduction of post-sale weighing of livestock rather than presale weighing at the new livestock selling complex at North Barnawartha.

“A system that does not allow for transparency and accountability and which effectively increases margins for buyers to the detriment of the beef farmers is wrong,” Cr Gaffney said.

“Our farmers have a lot to contend with to remain sustainable in a changing environment and I welcome the current inquiry in the hope that their findings will level the playing field for our farmers,” he said.

Federal Member for Indi, Cathy McGowan also entered into the debate and said that effective supply chains for agricultural produce are important for rural and regionalAustralia.

Ms McGowan invited Mudgegonga farmers Loretta Carroll, Jane Carney and Julian Carroll to lobby senators and key government and opposition officials in Canberra recently.

“We told government all seven recommendations should be implemented in full to improve industry representation, transparency and accountability in regards to the levy structure,” Ms Carroll said.

“We also took the opportunity to express our concerns about the impact these recommendations may have to the Senate Inquiry into market consolidation in the red meat processing sector that is currently taking place.”

Ms Carroll has been running a 285 acre cattle and sheep farm in Mudgegonga for the past 20 years, alongside her family including the family farm she grew up on, with the family working together on a total of 594 hectares.

Ms Carroll said that while they were “well received” by Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce’s senior advisors they were told that they “didn’t have the stomach” to make all the changes necessary.

“We were scheduled to see them for 30 minutes and they gave us 60 minutes which was good, but we were disappointed because a lot of work was done with the senate inquiry which also included many submissions but it doesn’t seem that many of them will be taken up,” Ms Carroll said.

One of the recommendations put forward by Ms Carroll and her fellow farmers was funding to set up a new corporation that will represent all grassfed beef producers that has input into Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA).

“We think that having just one group that represents grassfed beef producers as opposed to many would be a good option but getting funding for this group will hold things up and that is if we can get it,” she said.

“I’m hoping for big things to come out of this second inquiry and I would be very dissatisfied if the second inquiry wasn’t supported as a lot of submissions have been put in to improve the system.

“The lack of profitability for farmers is affecting communities all across Australia.

“Hopefully with this inquiry we may get things in place to help profitability,” Ms Carroll said.

The Senate Committee will deliver its findings on the last sitting day in March 2016.

Mr Joyce recently launched the Meat Industry Strategic Plan 2020 which frames the strategic focus of all aspects of the production, processing and live export sectors of Australia’s beef, sheepmeat and goatmeat supply chain for the future.

He said the plan would put the red meat sector in a strong position to take advantage of extremely favourable international conditions.

MLA manager of market information Ben Thomas said the online tool allows producers, traders and exporters to access a long-term compilation of industry prices, production and consumption data, as well as price information and trade statistics from a number of key export markets.

“By accessing specific market reports, red meat businesses can make more informed decisions – be that in terms of breeding buying or selling stock, or exporting product overseas,” he said.

“There is huge potential for a wide range of businesses to benefit from this data, resulting in a boost to the productivity of the wider Australian red meat industry,” Mr Thomas said.

He said that data would be presented to users based only on their own unique search settings, with the raw markets data, provided by industry, remaining behind secure firewalls to protect privacy.

The meat industry increased its value by 33 per cent to total $3.1 billion, making meat our most valuable food and ďŹ bre export for 2014/2015.

This strong growth has been driven by tight domestic supply in the United States of America, together with strong demand for lean grinding beef, which saw Victorian beef exports to this market almost double in 2014-2015.

Sheepmeat exports increased by 18 per cent, to be valued at more than $1 billion, accounting for 34 per cent of Victoria’s meat exports.

The Nationals’ leader and shadow agriculture minister Peter Walsh said these ďŹ gures reinforce the importance of the food and ďŹ bre sector to Victoria’s economy and the jobs it creates in regional communities. “It is concerning Labor has cut the agriculture output budget by 12 per cent, the trade output budget by 61.5 per cent and refuses to fully support the ChAFTA. “If our food and ďŹ bre sector is to continue to prosper, it needs a real budget commitment from the Labor Government, not just words,â€? Figures released in the 2014/2015 Food and Fibre Export Performance Report reveals that Victorian food and ďŹ bre exports increased by $282 million.

Victorian meat in particular continues to lead the way when it comes to food and ďŹ bre exported out of the state.

Dairy exports ranked second, valued at just over $2 billion in 2014/2015, following a downturn in global milk prices.

Grains exports were valued at $1.4 billion following a poor winter and signiďŹ cantly dry conditions in much of the north west of the state.

Lower export ďŹ gures actually reect a strong focus by growers on the domestic market, but optimism remains positive among growers for the coming season.

THE health of honey bees worldwide and their ability to pollinate crops is under serious threat so the CSIRO is leading a global initiative to resolve the problem.

The Global Initiative for Honey Bee Health is an international collaboration of researchers, beekeepers, farmers, and industry and technology companies.

It is aimed at better understanding what is harming bees and finding solutions to help secure crop pollination.

Honey bees are essential for the pollination of about one third of the food that people eat, including fruit, vegetables, oils, seeds and nuts.

Integral to the research effort are microsensors that are manually fitted to bees which work like a vehicle e-tag system.

Strategically-placed receivers identifying individual bees record their movements in and around bee hives.

CSIRO science leader Paulo de Souza said the tiny technology allows researchers to analyse the effects of stress factors including disease, pesticides, air pollution, water contamination, diet and extreme weather on the movements of bees and their ability to pollinate.

“We’re also investigating what key factors or combination of factors lead to bee deaths

She also stressed the need to focus on infrastructure and waste to help feed a growing

“I saw it come up during the summer holidays when I was working on a local dairy farm and after working on both farms it made me see the areas of agriculture that could be more productive and more efficient,” Ms Byrne said.

“And I have always had an interest in globalisation and population growth, so

“I actually learnt that I can really make a change and I now have a great network of people that I can use to ask questions to in the future.”

While Ms Byrne is not sure what area of science she wants to pursue in the future, she said that a career in agriculture is not out of the question as it has many opportunities.

“Agriculture is what I have grown up with and I have a great passion for it, but I’m just not sure exactly what I want to do yet.

“I just know that I don’t want to be stuck in a lab and with agriculture there are so many areas you can go in to,” she said.

The declaration is to be presented to the UN Committee on World Food Security in Rome this month.

November marks the start of new livestock producer declaration FROM November 16 red meat producers must ensure they have the current Livestock Production Assurance National Vendor Declaration (LPA NVD) forms as the older forms will no longer be accepted under the LPA program.

The current LPA NVD will be required for movements of all LPA accredited livestock (sheep, lambs, goats and cattle), including property to property, through saleyards, direct to processors, feedlots, and to the live export trade.

The phase out of all versions other than those labelled 0413, which has been available since December 2013, is being driven by expectations from international markets.

The decision has been driven by industry through SAFEMEAT – a partnership

between the red meat and livestock industry, including producer representatives, and the State and Federal Governments.

With 54 per cent of lamb, 97 per cent of sheepmeat, 70 per cent of beef and 95 per cent of goatmeat being exported, SAFEMEAT chairman Ross Keane said the decision was necessary to meet domestic and importing country requirements.

“The LPA NVDs play a key role in supporting and promoting Australia’s reputation as a reliable supplier of safe, residue free meat and meat products to domestic and international markets,” he said.

“This decision means those small numbers of producers who are still using old forms will need to obtain the latest LPA

NVD version so that our LPA NVD system consistently delivers what our international customers require,” Mr Keane said.

The latest LPA NVD removes the need for producers to state ‘Saudi eligible’ or ‘Russia eligible’.

Mr Keane said that by removing all previous editions ensures all requirements of our international trading partners have been addressed.

All red meat producers have been sent a letter outlining the changes and providing information on how to purchase a book of the current LPA NVDs if they are not using them.

Beef Week shapes up BEEF Week 2016 is shaping up to be the biggest ever according to Beef Week director Geoff Phillips.

Entries have been flowing in for the 25th Stock & Land Beef Week to be held from January 27 to February 4, 2016.

The first Beef Week was in 1992 when 50 properties opened to the public across four days.

Today it runs over nine days to cater for the large number of participating studs covering all of Victoria and the Riverina.

The greatest number of studs ever in Beef Week

was in 2012 when 263 studs representing 37 breeds opened their gates to the bull-buying public.

The RASV Beef Week Heifer Challenge has introduced a new facet to the 2016 event.

Studs enter pens of 10 registered heifers, 2016 from the 2014 drop, and an independent judge will assess each entry on their Beef Week open day.

These future breeders have proven to be a real drawcard for visitors and indicate the style of breeders that will be producing the bulls of the future.

Mr Phillips said that

Beef Week is the largest and most successful event of its type in the nation “and possibly the world”, with the 2016 event looking to be very successful thanks to renewed confidence in the industry.

“Beef industry buoyancy has created great confidence into the seedstock sector with commercial producers prepared to pay well for quality genetics,” he said.

“Traditionally bull prices have taken some time to reflect prices being paid for commercial cattle, but this time the effect has been almost

“There is a real buzz of confidence in the seedstock industry meaning more studs will enter Beef Week and increased numbers of potential bull buyers will visit studs.

The winners were announced during a prebaling supply meeting for growers and contractors at the Feed Central Victorian ofďŹ ce in Shepparton last month.

The best visual appearance hay resembled the colour of a $100 note, while high metabolisable energy (ME) and protein results led to a good feed test score.

The 2015 national competition attracted more than 1000 entries.

Feed Central managing director Tim Ford said the competition promotes the importance of good quality hay and recognises the excellent work of growers. “The awards are a way that we can recognise, encourage and reward growers for their efforts,� he said. “I believe the awards act as a benchmark of quality and will in time play a big role in growing the industry and improving the consistency of hay quality in Australia. “High-quality hay means more money for a supplier and better outcomes for end users.�

Making the most of silage spring

By FRANK MICKAN Economic Development Department pasture and fodder conservation specialist FARMERS in most of the dairying areas of Victoria will need to restock their silage storages and hay sheds this year after a dry autumn in some areas and a wettish winter in others.

Indications are that we are heading into an El Niño event in late spring so this means we need to make the most of any good spring growth this year.

If the El Niño does eventuate, the upside is that we will most likely have enough fine weather breaks to harvest wellmade silage (and hay).

However, farmers will now be faced with another quandary.

Do I make a bulk amount of silage of poorer quality or less silage of higher quality and/or do I buy in hay?

There are no right or wrong answers to these questions, but think about some of these considerations.

Many farmers will chase high yielding crops to rebuild silage storages, as has always been the case following a long dry period or drought.

This is fine if you are looking to stick away silage of medium to low nutritive value.

This silage will test under 10 mega joules of metabolisable energy per kilogram dry matter (MJ ME/kg DM or ME), under 10 per cent to 12 per cent crude protein (per cent CP) and more than about 55 per cent neutral detergent fibre ( per cent NDF).

This silage has a limited role due to its lower feed value.

relatively small amounts without affecting milk production, so other higher quality feeds need to make up the bulk of the diet if milk production and cow condition are to be looked after.

It is suitable for late lactation, low producing cows and dries.

Some farmers, having made lower yielding, high quality silage, have been surprised at how well the cows have milked, and will lift production if enough is fed.

This is not surprising because this silage is at or near grazing height pasture and can test more than 11ME, over 16 per cent CP, and below 55 per cent NDF. The earlier the pasture is cut the more leaf and less reproductive tillers it will have compared to heavier cuts usually shut up for much longer or pushed too far with nitrogen.

FEEDTEST has analysed silages in recent years as low as 7 ME, 4.5 per cent CP and as high as

77 per cent NDF - not good enough for even dry cows without a supplement to lift its quality.

On the other extreme, in good silage making conditions, pasture silages can be attained with more than 12 ME, over 25 and about 35 per cent NDF. Where does your silage normally sit and can you do better?

Let’s look at some other important factors when deciding to go bulk or quality.

Look at the paddocks after the heavy crops come off.

They will be yellow, have a lot of bare ground between ryegrass plants and take a long time to regrow.

This is because a major guideline for maintaining a dense high-quality pasture has been broken.

The pasture has grown well past three green living leaves and sunlight has not reached the base of the sward.

Pasture harvested at or just before canopy closure will be about half the yield as much traditionally harvested silage.

This silage will be as high a quality as possible from ryegrass and may have just more than two or just under three green leaves, depending on

Table 1 shows the impact of quality and losses (fermentation, storage and feeding out) on silage for milk production.

Let’s say we normally chase heavy cuts of silage (350 tonne DM) and now try for lighter yields, but similar total amount of silage made this year.

Let’s work on eight ME to produce one litre of milk (ME/L) and milk price is $0.40 per litre.

The eight ME is well above 5.5 ME/L often used but this allows for some cow condition gain, walking, substitution, etc so a conservative value.

Based on the figures provided, if a target quality of 11 MJ/kg DM and losses of 10 per cent are achieved there is an increase in milk income of $48,560 compared to producing forage of 9.5 ME/kg DM with 25 per cent losses.

How much extra effort is required to improve quality with earlier cutting, fast wilt and harvest albeit lower yielding?

Much of the losses can be saved by sealing the stack airtight, not just covering it, and sealing holes when first noticed.

Peak oil or peak water challenge

Because of failing inows, a further complication is Menindee Lakes which is currently at 102,000 megalitres.

This will require a full commitment from Hume to South Australia.

In the political federal arena, it is pleasing to see water back under the Minister for Agriculture.

Some scuttlebutt is rife about the 20, 000 megalitres of Goulburn water being released for the environment that is instead going to be released to agriculture for food production.

A couple of steps are required for the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder to achieve this.

The Federal Government has to comply with the asset rules of selling a public asset.

Keeping this in perspective, 20,000 megalitres is the release for Lake Mulwala for one day.

Irrigators are looking to

blame allocation holders that have no attachment to land.

Since unbundling this has been about 10 per cent of total water for the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District.

In the past two years this has increased to 11 per cent.

For sound business reasons some of the larger operators keep the water shares allocation separate to land titles and projects.

I think that the farmers and irrigators should focus on the mission statement of the Murray Darling Basin Authority, and that is to enable trade between the valleys of NSW and Victoria.

Secondly, the trading rules, particularly the carryover rules for NSW and Victoria, need to move to a common policy.

Here I support NSW with a maximum of 50 per cent carryover.

Victoria needs to justify the 100 per cent of high reliability and I would suggest scrap the spill policy.

NSW has a supplementary delivery component which is like water on loan against next year’s allocation.

With no water credit in dams, whose water is this supplementary water in 2015-2016?

By applying a common carryover rule, trade across states and intra valley transfers of allocation should be freed up.

MOST people have heard about peak oil and the ability to extract gas and oil by fracking.

It is with interest that the Brakken oil fracking in US is now slowing production and some problems with water aquifers with contamination is occurring.

What is real is that the water quality has been compromised endangering the food production.

In Australia we have a system of southern Murray Darling Basin dams that are reliant on winter and spring rains; these are Eildon, Hume, Dartmouth and Snowy mountain dams.

In 2015, rainfall and inows are failing.

For example, the inows are Mitta at 1247 megalitres per day and the combined Murray (including the two power stations) and Dartmouth releases is at about 13,500 megalitres per day.

For September, this is 20 per cent of average inows, with day releases of 16,000 megalitres from the Hume.

The system, at best, is neutral, but is in decline.

So I conclude that we have reached peak water for 2015-2016.

Tributaries to the Murray also are failing.

From downstream of the Hume dam river inows are Kiewa at 1353 megalitres per day, Ovens at 1384 megalitres per day, Goulburn Broken at 860 megalitres per

LEADING North East Angus breeders Joan and John Woodruff have signalled their faith in the future of beef business by leading a syndicate that has paid an Australian record auction price of $150,000 for a bull.

The principals of Witherswood, near Taminick, put together a syndicate of three Angus studs and Australia’s leading artiďŹ cial breeding ďŹ rm to buy 18-monthold Millah Murrah Kingdom K35 from breeders Dimity and Ross Thompson at Bathurst in New South Wales last month.

The other syndicate members were Gillmandyke stud at Orange – formerly managed by Witherswood manager Ian Peake, Ascot stud at Warwick in Queensland and Australian breeding Services.

The Woodruffs were also part of a second syndicate with Gillmandyke and including a Western Australian stud called Cherylton at Brookhampton Valley near Donnybrook in the purchase of another Millah Murrah bull, Klooney K42, for $80,000. “It’s a longstanding relationship (with Millah Murrah) that we’ve been involved with for more than 20 years,� Mr Woodruff told

North East Farmer – and paying top price for the bulls from the Bathurst herd is not new.

The Woodruffs in 2003 paid Millah Murrah what then became the Australian record auction price of $43,000 for a bull.

Mr Woodruff said that Mr Peake had seen Kingdom and Klooney several months ago and again during NSW Beef Week. “Ian came back and spoke so

highly of them that we decided to do some homework and research both bulls,� he said. “We’re looking to the future and have taken this step to give our clients and breeders an opportunity to join with us in the huge genetics on offer.�

The bulls will go ďŹ rst to ABS at Holbrook for a semen collection program and then will be walking Witherswood’s paddocks for

the natural mating season later this spring.

Semen from the two bulls will be offered Australia-wide and in New Zealand. “Kingdom is an old-fashioned style of Angus bull and we believe he will make a tremendous contribution to the breed,� Mr Woodruff said.

Witherswood has also sold two lots of stud heifers this year to China.

WITH the Wangaratta Saleyards roof project now well under way, the Rural City of Wangaratta (RCOW) is continuing to explore the most appropriate future management arrangements for the facility once these works are completed.

In July 2014, council invited expressions of interest in the future operation of the Wangaratta Saleyards.

As part of this process, council also wants to find out whether or not there is any interest among local saleyards users/producers in establishing a producer-owned cooperative to lease and run the saleyards in future.

If such a proposal is to proceed, it needs willing parties. It cannot proceed unless there is a willing group of producers who want to

become members of such a cooperative.

Council is willing to support producers to get a cooperative up and running.

In the event that a viable cooperative option does not emerge through this current dialogue, then council’s intent is to proceed to seek another external operator to take over the saleyards business.

Mark McKenzie-McHarg, mach2 consulting, and Alan Clark, RCOW director infrastructure services, will be available at the saleyards on Thursday, September 24 to discuss this proposal in detail with producers and agents.

In the event there is sufficient interest in pursuing it, then a more formal public meeting will be arranged to which all producers will be invited.

Government approves herd carbon offsets GRASSFED cattle producers have been given an opportunity to sell the environmental benefits of changed herd management techniques through the Federal Government’s Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF).

The ERF provides livestock producers and landholders an opportunity to generate extra income by storing carbon in vegetation and soils, or reducing greenhouse gas emissions from their grazing operations.

In a significant step forward for beef producers seeking financial recognition for their greenhouse abatement efforts, the Federal Government has now approved a number of practices that lead to a reduction in emissions per kilogram of liveweight produced.

Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) manager of sustainable feedbase Tom Davison said this includes practices that increase the ratio of weight to age of the herd, reduce the average age of the herd, reduce the proportion of unproductive animals in the herd, or change the ratio of livestock classes within the herd to increase total annual liveweight gain of the herd.

“The national green-

house inventory shows that beef cattle are a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions within the agriculture sector, however research has also shown these emissions can be reduced by improving diet, breeding efficiency or structure of cattle herds – the very things that also improve profitability,” Dr Davison said.

“For example, producers in the northern part of Australia could reduce the time from birth to market by introducing improved feeding and watering regimes.

“Producers in the south, who have high quality feed more readily available, might focus on better reproduction rates using improved breeding techniques to lift calving percentages and minimise the number of unproductive animals, or increase livestock growth rates through forage cropping or supplementation,” he said.

This method of claiming emissions reductions is only available to Australian producers of pasture-fed cattle, and not to herds managed in feedlots, or to producers of grassfed lambs, sheep and goats.

“It is important to remember that due to the small reductions in

methane emissions per animal, the method is most likely to be viable where producers can put together 20,000 animal equivalents or above for their project, either as an individual business or as an aggregation of herds,” Dr Davison said.

“Producers will need to have good records of animal numbers by class of animal dating back to three years before the start of their project and be able to prove the introduction of new practices from the start of a project under the ERF. “If they can demonstrate this then they have an opportunity for alternative income from productivity related practices.”

The cattle management methods approved by the Commonwealth this week add to other farm management practices already recognised by the scheme, including avoided clearing of native forest regrowth, savanna fire management and sequestering carbon in soil in grazing systems.

Livestock producers can participate in the ERF as individuals, sole traders, companies, local, state and territory government bodies and trusts, and will need to apply to participate through the Clean Energy Regulator.

Husbandry the best in Wooragee NORTH East farmer talks with Wooragee livestock producer Anne Stelling.

Give our readers a quick snapshot of your farm at Wooragee.

Weeping Grass Creek is 75 hectares of low granite country adjoining Reedy Creek at Wooragee. About a third of the farm is set aside as native bush corridors, including an ephemeral creek which runs into Reedy Creek, and we have done a lot of revegetation work in partnership with Wooragee Landcare group over the years.

We run sheep for wool and prime lambs, grow timber in a small woodlot and have a small vineyard producing Weeping Grass Creek reds.

We all work off-farm to support our farming aspirations.

How long have you been a farmer?

I’ve been on this farm since 1997.

I grew up on the family farm at Table Top just north of Albury – a mixed farm producing beef, wool, prime lambs and grains.

My mother’s family have been farmers for generations around Culcairn.

My father’s family were the Stellings of Hunter and Stelling hardware firm in Albury, and Dad attended Hawkesbury agricultural college to

I always loved the farm and especially the animal husbandry side, and although I haven’t made a career of it I always wanted to be on the land.

Tell us about your family.

I and my two children share the farm with my sister Fleur, her partner Digby and their two children. Our kids love living so close to their cousins and have always been able to run across the paddock to visit at any time.

We each have our area we look after; Fleur has done the revegetation planning and grown the tubestock in her home nursery, Digby manages the vineyard and woodlot, and I manage the livestock.

usual farm learning activities with chooks, geese, guinea pigs, goats, horses, pet lambs, poddy calves etc.

Best advice or farming tip you have received?

Plan to enjoy the bounty, but plan also to always have something in reserve.

Describe your perfect day.

Breakfast with a good book and a pot of tea, kids off to school on time, a full day on the farm with no phone or computer, a lot of items ticked off my list by 4pm, a walk in the garden and maybe a bit of weeding of the veggie patch, then time to hang out with the kids when they get home.

What is the best thing about being a farmer?

Hanging out with animals.

I love observing their different characters and following their behaviour, especially sheep and goats; the way they have friendships and always look out for their family.

What is the worst thing about being a farmer?

Things die.

My father always says, “Where there is livestock there is dead stock”, but it’s hard when you are the one responsible.

Foxes taking lambs are the worst.

If you could be someone else for a day, who would that be and why?

I wouldn’t be anyone else for quids.

Which, according to Mr Houghton, is why, in addition to protecting their assets with business insurance and security measures, organisations should evaluate their operations, seeking opportunities to reduce their vulnerabilities and increase their agility.

Taking a proactive approach Risk can be found in just about every activity and strategy, from human resources matters to system processes.

s 7HAT HAZARDS DO we face? For example, are we in an area with bush ďŹ res or do our operations risk sparking flames?

Consider natural disasters, weather, geopolitical tensions, utility outages, disease, supplier dependency, cyber threats, data errors and workforce tensions, among others. s 7HICH ASSETS OR operations would these hazards impact? s 7HAT WOULD THE consequences be? Think about both short-term, such as structural destruction, and long-term impacts like reputational damage. “After evaluating your vulnerabilities, you may need to adjust your strategies to mitigate them or shift some of the risk to your business insurance carrier,� Mr Houghton said.

TWENTY years ago Ian and Angela Preuss were looking for something they could put on their 800 acre Strathbogie property when a good friend introduced them to alpacas.

Now the couple are the largest breeders inAustralia of the rarest type of alpaca, the Suri, and export the breed to China.

The Suri alpaca is prized for its longer and silkier

ďŹ bres that resemble pencillike locks that look like dreadlocks.

The Pruessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; also breed Huacaya alpacas which produce a dense, soft crimpy sheep-like ďŹ bre.

Suilana Alpacas has exported about 900 alpacas to China and within the next two weeks will be exporting another 400. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Alpaca farming is just starting out in China where

the Chinese are interested in developing a ďŹ&#x201A;eece market as a ďŹ rst step before they start getting into the breeding side,â&#x20AC;? Mrs Preuss said.

She said the alpaca industry has evolved over the past 20 years and when the industry ďŹ rst took off purchasing the animals was very expensive. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You still pay good money for high-quality stock, but the average stock

has come down in price and is more affordable so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easier for people to enter the industry,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Suilana Alpacas also run a quarantine facility for alpacas being exported to Europe and the UK. Mrs Preuss added that alpacas are an easy animal to farm, they are gentle and good converters of feed.

A downer cow refers to just that, an animal that for some reason is recumbent and does not (or cannot) get up. There are various reasons a cow may go down and these can be categorised broadly into five main categories (the 5 Mâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s!)

Musculoskeletal causes.

Musculoskeletal causeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s covers a wide range of problems including soft tissue injuries as well as orthopaedic problems such as breaks and fractures.

Neurological problems can also be categorised under this banner and includes injuries associated with nerve damage during traumatic calvingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (also known as calving paralysis). Treatment options vary depending on the cause of the problem.

Metabolic causes This category covers many of electrolyte and nutrient imbalances seen in cows in the transition

period around the time of calving. The most common metabolic problems are â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;milk feverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; due to calcium deficiency or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;grass tetanyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; due to magnesium deficiency.

Another imbalance that can occur is a deficiency in phosphorus although this is much less common in Australasia than some of the other metabolic problems.

Energy deficiency syndromes such as ketosis can also result in a down cow. Ketosis occurs when an animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s energy requirements are greater than the energy stores available to that animal.

Massive infection Septicaemia or bacteria in the blood stream can lead to a downer cow. Realistically this can be infection resulting from anywhere in the body from the lungs (pneumonia) to the joints. There are two

forms of infection that are particularly common causes of downer cows and these make up the last two Mâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (below).

Metritis Metritis is an infection of the uterus that results in wider infection and generalised illness in the cow as a result of bacteria entering the bloodstream.

Metritis most commonly occurs around the time of calving as an open cervix allows entry of bacteria into the uterus. Retained afterbirth and lack of hygiene around calving can increase the risk of metritis. Metritis can quickly be fatal so early intervention and medical treatment is often necessary.
