Anvil – breeding more than just bulls

BREEDING FOR THE FUTURE: Anvil Angus – a stud based out of Alexandra in North East Victoria – imports some of the best Angus genetics in the world. Part of the stud’s philosophy is that the quality of a bull cannot be assessed by breeding values alone, which is why the team travels internationally to view each animal. So says Anvil Angus stud principal, Stephen Handbury.

In a market that is saturated with estimated birth values, weight percentages and marble scores, Mr Handbury said the Anvil point of difference was to develop strong maternal characteristics. “A lot of bulls that look good on paper don’t look good in the esh,â€? he said. “Numbers are easy to produce, and easy to market – but the weight of a calf doesn’t matter much if there is poor udder attachment.â€?

THE lack of action to reform the red meat industry came under heavy ďŹ re last month from Senators and local beef producers.

Nationals Senator for Victoria, Bridget McKenzie, speaking at a Senate hearing, said she was astounded at the level of inactivity in reforming the industry. “The ACCC handed down its ďŹ nal report in March this year into the red meat processing industry and yet ďŹ ve months later no action has been taken on those recommendations,â€?

Senator McKenzie said. “In a Senate hearing into the red meat issue, Gabrielle Ford from the ACCC was asked to give one example of industry working towards implementing any of their 15 recommendations – she could not do so. “I frankly am unimpressed that there seems to be so little will from industry in changing the current system which many claim includes an abuse of market power. “The ACCC’s ďŹ nal report recommendations include meat processors publishing price grids for sales made direct to processors, an increase in the frequency of random and unannounced audits of cattle grading and trimming in processing plants and the introduction of an independent dispute resolution process to apply across the industry. “Yet despite these recommendations, AMIC processors have told the Senate inquiry they have not changed their minds that producers’ complaints are not based on evidence. “That ies in the face of evidence and is not good enough.â€?

Senator McKenzie said it is up to the ACCC to prosecute anti-competitive behaviour in the red meat industry. “I have asked that the Red Meat Advisory Council appear before the Senate Committee (this week) to give an update on what exactly is happening

The pivot block has helped Anvil move from round-bale production to large square silage bales.

It has also helped the success of the stud’s twice yearly calf drop.

“The Goulburn River flats really complement our autumn calvers – they seem to do well there,” Mr Handbury said.

“The pivot has also meant that if we don’t get a good spring – or autumn – we can create our own 100 acres of season.”

Anvil runs 800 registered Angus cows and up to 200 recipient females on almost 1500 hectares, with an average district rainfall of around 800mm.

The twice yearly bull sales are another point of difference that has helped Anvil create a niche market.

“The market has evolved, and

breeders are now happy to buy bulls at 18 months,” Mr Handbury said.

“By holding a bull sale twice a year, we can tap into both the spring and autumn markets.”

The Anvil Spring Bull Sale is on September 13.

Last year, Anvil topped the state with a 2016 sale record of $34,000.

The high price, Mr Handbury said, came after years of careful selection.

“We do a lot of work on sourcing the right genetics – I spend time travelling internationally to get the right mix, and make sure the bulls represent what we are looking for.”

The outcrop genetics have proven successful for Anvil thus far, with almost all top priced sale bulls being the son of an introduced sire.

“I think that shows that we are headed in the right direction – our buyers know that we aren’t just buy-

ing a bull on paper; we are looking at these animals before we bring them in,” Mr Handbury said.

In 2009, Anvil bought, in partnership, US bull WK Replay for $US67,500.

The bull went on to sire Anvil’s two highest-priced bulls.

“It’ a long time before you see the results of the decisions you make,” Mr Handbury said.

“From the outset, we are looking for those maternal characteristics.”

However, it’s not just about the daughters at Anvil.

“Of course, producing a steer that is a good size and shape is also incredibly important,” Mr Handbury said.

“We have spent a lot of time and effort in developing bulls that offer an all-round package.

“That’s what sets us apart.”

A NEW agri-business bachelor degree is running for the first time at La Trobe University.

Run out of the its AlburyWodonga, Bendigo, Mildura, Shepparton and Melbourne campuses, the Bachelor of Business (agri-business) has been developed by La Trobe University and already has almost 40 students.

Students will travel to all four of La Trobe’s regional campuses throughout the degree to study different components of the agribusiness program - and see first-hand how agricultural industries are operating in different regions.

A second major feature of the course is its work integrated learning (WIL) subject, which provides the opportunity to complete an agri-business industry based placement.

The three-year degree will provide students with a major in agri-business, with the option of taking on a second major.

Graduates may also be eligible for membership in the Agribusiness Association of Australia.

Growers say bye to chestnut blight CHESTNUTS Australia president Brian Casey is confident no new cases of chestnut blight will be found in the Ovens Valley when trees are checked in the coming months.

Agriculture Victoria Biosecurity will begin the next round of chestnut blight surveillance in early September and plans to be completed by mid-October.

Checks in autumn found no new infections and Mr Casey said if any new cases arise they will most likely be during the next surveillance period.

“The disease sits dormant in winter and then becomes more active in spring,” he said.

“We were pretty disappointed by the single detection last July but we think it’s highly unlikely to happen again.

“After last year, surveillance officers decided they needed to be more thorough and they certainly have been, so we’ll be very surprised if another infection pops up.”

The single diseased chestnut tree found in July 2016 came as the region was about to be given the all clear from the foreign infection that threatened to destroy the $10 million industry six years earlier.

Agriculture Victoria Biosecurity officers found now new infections when they undertook autumn chestnut blight

Autumn surveys focused on previously infected properties to check for any remaining contamination.

Agriculture Victoria chestnut blight response manager Stu Roberton said officers will assess more than 16,000 chestnut trees and other host trees including oaks, during September and October.

“The spring survey will be undertaken in targeted 1km zones around previous infected properties in Wandiligong, Smoko and Bright and in a 5km zone around the previously infected properties in Eurobin.”

“Early detection is vital for eradication prospects and is a pivotal part of protecting Australia’s valuable chestnut industry.”

Recently the National Management Group, that governs the status and associated actions on Australia’s exotic pest eradication programs, approved the new Chestnut Blight Response Plan.

The plan permits the extension of the eradication program to August 2018.

“The plan was updated to reflect changes required to the eradication program after the July 2016 detection in Eurobin, Victoria,” Mr Robertson said.

“The plan outlines the final stages of surveillance and associated activities required to provide confidence the disease has been successfully eradicated from Australia.”

Victoria can apply for area freedom if no further detections are found by the end of the eradication period.

Mr Casey said area freedom will lift restrictions currently limiting host material and equipment movements in the Ovens Valley restricted area.

“Growers have for a long time carried out responsible biosecurity measures like washing down machinery if their moving it out of a restricted zone,” he said.

“We’ve got a field day in Stanley coming up and while chestnut blight isn’t the main topic it’s an opportunity to reinforce biosecurity procedures and encouraging farmers to have plans in place.

“Hopefully this time next year we will be celebrating the region being disease free.”

$5000 prize for farming essay SOME $5000 is up for grabs in the 2017 John Ralph essay competition.

John Ralph was instrumental in the establishment of the Australian Farm Institute (AFI), becoming its founding chairman in 2004, and continuing in that role until his retirement in June, 2010.

The essay competition, held in his name, aims to engage the community about policy issues that

impact on the Australian farm sector.

The topic for the John Ralph Essay Competition 2017 is to support or oppose the following statement: structural changes in the Australian agriculture sector over the past two decades have thwarted the objectives of competition reforms.

The essay needs to be between 1500 – 4000 words.

First prize in the open category is $5000, with a

further $1000 up for grabs in the novice.

The prize also includes a year’s membership to the Australian Farm Institute, complimentary attendance to November’s AFI Roundtable Conference and essay publication in the summer 2017 edition of Farm Policy Journal.

Mark looks at managing risk while capitalising on opportunity

DELATITE Station owner, Mark Ritchie, likes to buck the trend when it comes to managing risk and opportunity.

In the 1990s – when gloom surrounded the price of wool - the family farm invested in sheep.

Years later when the cattle market was low they bought more cattle.

“We’re a bit counter-cyclical,” Mr Ritchie said.

“Where we see an opportunity to buy or trade stock we do that - often if we’ve seen a market downturn we’ve used that opportunity.

“In the early 1990s when the reserve price scheme for wool was unwinding, it was all doom and gloom but that was when we got into wool.

“Then we increased the size of our cattle herd when we thought the market was at a bit of a low point.”

Mr Ritchie manages a selfreplacing flock of 18,600 Merino sheep and 1100 Angus cows on 2600 hectares out at Booroolite.

The famous Delatite Station has been in the Ritchie family for 110 years, and Mark is the fourth generation to take the reins.

“Everyone has their own tolerance or appetite for risk,” he said.

“No two farmers are the same.

“For us, it’s about taking a long term view and finding a balance between taking calculated risks when the odds are in your favour; backing yourself and looking for

opportunities in any situation; whether it’s a strong market or a weak market, a good season or a bad season.

“You don’t get it right every time,” he added.

The Ritchie family has traditionally discussed options, called on consultants for expert advice, but ultimately made the decision themselves.

Recently, the strong market for

grazing enterprises has led Mr Ritchie to cash in.

“In the last financial year we decided to sell a few extra cattle to capitalise on the prices, and we will again this year if the prices continue,” he said.

The farm has ryegrass and clover pastures with a bit of phalaris and as with stock numbers, Mr Ritchie is always looking for opportunities to improve.

“We’re constantly trying to improve our pastures by sowing more phalaris whenever we can,” he said.

“At Mansfield, we have a number of natural advantages that we must exploit; quality soils and a relatively consistent rainfall.

“We have gone down the path of running a high stocking rate farm with a spring calving self-replacing herd of Angus females plus a spring lambing flock of self-replacing fine wool merinos.”

Mr Ritchie said stocking rate had continually proven to be one of the main drivers of profitability for grazing enterprises.

“Over the years we have spent considerable time, money and effort in maximising our stocking rate and the productivity of our farm, particularly in capital applications of fertiliser and lime, pasture improvement programs, improved genetics, retaining livestock and targeted capital expenditure,” he said.

“We find if the stocking rate is set appropriately and you have one eye on costs and labour efficiency, a low cost of production will follow.”

The current season has been good so far, but a lack of moisture in the soil and run-off was, Mr Ritchie said, beginning to play on the mind of farmers.

“Everyone’s a little bit nervous and hoping for good spring rains,” he said.

GMW opens irrigation season GOULBURN-Murray Water (GMW) have opened their new irrigation season, as of last month.

Buoyed by rainfall in the North East, GMW were hopeful the additional rain would help ease pressure on irrigators following a mostly dry winter.

GMW water resources manager, Mark Bailey, said while it was too early to say what the rainfall would mean long-term for farmers, it was a positive sign. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lake Eildon, Nillahcootie, Buffalo and William Hovell all saw inďŹ&#x201A;ows pick up considerably (because of the late August rain),â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lake Eppalock and the Loddon storages did reasonably well.â&#x20AC;?

Kyabram customer service manager, Greg Shannon, said in his area the rainfall had been

welcomed and meant some farmers wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be looking to irrigate immediately when the season opened. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There will be some customers who will still require a stock and domestic supply, however, this rain means some will hold off with irrigation until September. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It depends how much rain we get, there are a few more showers forecast here and there - but there is moisture in the ground which is a good thing.â&#x20AC;?

Rochester customer service manager, Paul Cox, agreed â&#x20AC;&#x201C; saying the rain was helping to relieve pressure at the start of the irrigation season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was looking like farmers were going to have to get straight into irrigating as soon as the season opened, but the recent rain may take some of

this pressure off and allow farmers to irrigate later, saving water for when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needed most,â&#x20AC;? he said.

GMW Strategic Advisory Committee member and Kiewa, Mitta Mitta and Upper Murray Water Services Committee chair, Peter Serpell, said the August rain was welcome in the North East. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Given that we had one of our driest Junes in 50 years, and that July was also below average, the rain is certainly welcome,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were saying only a few days ago that we were unsure what the coming season would bring. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This rain will top up the stream ďŹ&#x201A;ows and especially with the amount of snow â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this will mean a brighter irrigation season.â&#x20AC;?

AT this time of year in North East Victoria, grass tetany is potentially a major problem in cattle.

Since cattle with grass tetany often die suddenly, the ďŹ rst sign on your property may be a dead cow.

To establish the likelihood of grass tetany occurring on your property, it is worth considering some of the main risk factors.

Cattle contracting the disease are associated with immature, rapidly growing, grass dominant pastures.

It is also linked with soils high in potassium, or with the heavy use of nitrogen or potash fertilisers.

Older, fatter cows soon after calving are most likely to be affected, and grass tetany is most likely to occur during cool and cloudy weather.

After considering the risk factors, it is worth planning how you

Grass tetany occurs when blood magnesium levels are low, therefore is also known as hypomagnesaemia.

Cattle are unable to store magnesium, therefore as protection magnesium supplements need to be given daily to cattle at greatest risk during periods of potential grass tetany.

Since grass tetany leads to the rapid death of cattle, the treatment of clinical cases is an emergency situation, and veterinary assistance should be sought immediately.

A veterinarian will give a calcium and magnesium solution intravenously.

If a veterinarian is not available, the calcium and magnesium solution should be given under the skin.

Lamb producers continue to enjoy high prices on sheep flock, lamb and mutton production, seasonal conditions, prices and demand in Australia and the global market.

General manager agribusiness for Rural Bank, Andrew Smith, said the Australian sheep industry was in good health.

“It’s quite remarkable to have prices and production increasing for so long, showing a consistent, strong growth in demand,” Mr Smith said. ”Given domestic lamb consumption has remained relatively steady since the mid-1990s, it’s clear export markets have underpinned the sector’s growth.

“The quantity of lamb exported has increased for six consecutive years and was 62

per cent higher in 2016 than 2010.

“At the same time, the price paid for Australian lamb has also risen, increasing the value of Australian sheep exports.”

Mr Smith said declining production in New Zealand – the largest exporter of lamb to China - had created more opportunities for Australian lamb in the Chinese market, resulting in export volumes increasing 39 per cent compared to 2016.

“Combined with continued growth in Australian lamb’s most valuable export market, the USA, long term demand and prices look set to continue their upward trajectory,” he said.

“The only negative to the buoyant conditions is the forecast for a drier and warmer winter and early spring.”

FEVER: This Angus cow made a full recovery after being down with milk fever for more than 24 hours.

Large number of milk fever cases

MANSFIELD producers are being warned to be on the look-out for symptoms of milk fever in lactating cows.

One of Mansfield’s large animal clinics, Delatite Veterinary Services, said the number of reported cases was unusually high for this time of year.

“We have had a lot of call outs for milk fever, and that’s indicative of the season,” Delatite Veterinary Services’ Dr Lexie Leonard said.

“It typically presents in cows that are grazing on short green grass – and with the colder weather this year, there have been a lot of cases.”

Milk fever is most common in lactating cows for up to six months after calving.

The disease is caused by a calcium deficiency.

Around 80 per cent of cases occur within one day

of calving, because milk and colostrum production drain calcium.

Older cows are more susceptible.

Most typically, symptoms include: dopey behaviour; muscle tremors; bloat; lying down, unable to get up; and contracting muscles, particularly in the neck.

“Because it often occurs around the time of calving, milk fever can be mistaken for calving paralysis,” Dr Leonard said.

“Unless you know what you are looking at, and know exactly what to do, your best bet is always just to ring your vet; otherwise you risk losing the cow.”

From the onset of milk fever

symptoms, there is a 48-hour window for treatment.

“The quicker you can get to the cow, the better the prognosis,” Dr Leonard said.

Just last week, Bruce McCormack found an eight year old cow down in his paddock at Merrijig.

Severely bloated and unable to lift her head, his first thought was calving gone wrong.

“When I realised she had a fresh calf, I knew it wasn’t a calving problem,” he said.

“Because she couldn’t move at all, my next thought was milk fever – particularly because of the season we have had and the lack of early spring growth.”

THE Australian sheep industry continues to go from strength to strength off the back of increased prices, production and exports - according to Rural Bank’s 2017 Australian Sheep Annual Review.

Strong demand and tight supply in the first half of 2017 has caused the National Trade Lamb Indicator (NTLI) to continue to average higher for the fourth year in a row, averaging 639c/kg cwt for the first half of 2017 - 14 per cent higher than the same period last year.

National mutton prices are also averaging 38 per cent higher than 2016, as producers held onto their breeding stock and capitalised on strong wool prices.

Elmore field days 2017 to be the best yet THE 2017 Elmore Field Days are shaping up to be the biggest yet – with more displays, more stall holders, more guest speakers and most importantly, more tractors.

Kicking off on October 3 and running for three days, the annual event showcases all that is new, exciting and innovative in the world of agriculture, from the quarter acre hobby farmer to the large scale broad acre operation.

For the first time ever, Elmore Field Days will be held in the Victorian school holidays, which means there is even more reason to pack up the kids and the family and head to one of the biggest ag shows in the state.

Because of the timing, a special effort has been made to make all the junior farmers want to go along with mum and dad - with jumping castles and face painting, along with live kids’ shows and plenty of John Deere merchandise in little sizes.

With over 700 exhibitors every interest, age level and dream aspiration is covered – from tools to pools, yards to crushes and everything in between, the Elmore Field Days are a must on the agricultural calendar.

There will be plenty to see

and do with daily in-paddock demonstrations starting at 11am, highlighting the latest in tillage, haymaking, spraying and sowing machinery.

There will be shearing and wool-handling demonstrations in the shearing shed over the three days, and the popular Ag Art Wear Competition is back for its 17th year - where designers will again create artistic garments from materials found on the farm or land.

There will also be live music, buskers, food stalls, crafts and bits and pieces for every family member in the General Interest Pavilion, while the Agribusiness Pavilion is not to be missed with over 100 exhibitors.

One of the unique elements of Elmore is the on-site airstrip, allowing visitors to land, taxi up and walk straight up to the gate – no long drives or hours spent trying to keep the kids amused on the road.

Held at the Elmore Events Centre, tickets cost just $20 for adults, $10 for secondary students and children under 12 are free.

LIVE MUSIC: Catch upcoming country music star, Jemma Beech, performing live near the public bar from 11am during the Elmore Field Days.

SMALL town country girl, Jemma Beech, is an aspiring artist in the Australian country music scene - and she will be performing daily at 11am during the Elmore Field Days.

As an artist, Jemma’s influences include Loretta Lyn, Johnny Cash, Shania Twain, Miranda Lambert and Keith Urban.

“Ever since I was three years old, I’ve had a guitar in hand and sang whatever I knew or made up,” Jemma said.

“Music is the heart and soul of my life - and to be the only musical one in my family is a gift I cherish.”

Competing in country music talent quests all over New South Wales, Jemma learnt what it was like to be on the talent quest circuit, and soon after was a finalist in Queensland’s Champion of Champions.

With experience and confidence, Jemma then applied for the Junior Academy of Country Music in 2010 (CMAA), where she was successfully accepted.

“I started gigging at 16 years old and I’m very fortunate to have supportive people around me, encouraging me all the time,” Jemma said.

“After nine years attending the iconic Tamworth Country Music Festival, I have learnt and grown so much as an artist.”

Jemma graduated from the CMAA Senior Academy of Country Music in 2015, and for the 6th time running Jemma attended the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Having recently returned from her first ever tour with the Sunny Cowgirls on their “here we go” album tour, Jemma is working on her own EP.

AG Art at Elmore Field Days is a spectacle like no other.

It’s been a tradition lasting more than 15 years, and each year the outrageous outfits keep getting better and better.

The challenge is this: designers must use materials commonly found around a farm to make a wearable piece of art.

The competition has grown from just nine looks in year one to over 50, and people from all over the nation are starting to get involved.

Lorraine Trewick, Elmore’s general interest and ag art chairwoman, created the competition after seeing something similar in New Zealand 20 years ago, and she believes the ingenuity of the outfits is incredible.

“The imagination people have to put it together every year just blows us away,” said Ms Trewick.

“On the stage, people don’t realise what they’re made of, but when you tell them, they go, ‘Oh my gosh, so it is’.”

To ensure competitors’ imagination is used to the fullest, the rules are strict.

These genius outfits must remain true to their mission, as store-bought items will incur the designer demerits.

In 2016, the competition welcomed a male designer, one of very few in Elmore’s Ag Art’s history, who boasted a raucous outfit made from finger-knitted merino wool, with a ram’s skull headpiece the finishing touch.

New approach to fertilising crops in-season shows promise TRIALS of a relatively new approach to fertilising dryland cereal crops during the growing season have entered their second year, following promising results in 2016.

Trials showed that mid-row banding of nitrogen (N) in-season increased the uptake of nitrogen fertiliser in wheat by more than 50 per cent â&#x20AC;&#x201C; when compared with other methods of in-season N application.

The trials, which were run across Victoria last year, found overall the fertiliser uptake greatly improved.

Agriculture Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regional research agronomist, Ashley Wallace, who started the work as part of the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resourcesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (DEDJTR) Bilateral Research Agreement, describes the outcomes as encouraging. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Trials of mid-row banding of N in-season have produced promising results, including increasing fertiliser uptake by an average of 46 per cent and up to 52 per cent in wheat,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The method also boosted grain yield by up to 0.5 tonnes/hectare.â&#x20AC;?

Results from mid-row banding trials in 2016 are being validated this year, with further trials currently under way.

Mr Wallace said there had been a signiďŹ cant swing towards in-season management of N fertiliser, particularly in southern dryland cropping regions, as growers looked to improve management amid variable seasonal conditions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The time when crops are sown is a period when seasonal forecasts and hence yield predictions have limited accuracy,â&#x20AC;? Mr Wallace said.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;This makes decisions around N application up-front difďŹ cult and risky â&#x20AC;&#x201C; applying N during the growing season better matches the timing of application to crop demand. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unfortunately, surface application of N fertilisers, such as urea, during the growing season increases the risk of N loss through volatilisation.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Wallace explained that midrow banding of fertiliser, where N is applied below the surface of every second inter-row, has the potential to reduce risk - current research has focused on application during the growing season, rather than up-front during sowing.

Last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trials at Longerenong and Quambatook were undertaken in collaboration with Birchip Cropping Group, and aimed to compare

mid-row banding with other forms of in-season N application, including top-dressed, liquid foliar and mid-row surface applications of N. Mid-row banded treatments of liquid N were applied using a purpose-built three-point linkage mounted fertiliser banding gear, which used twin-disc openers to place fertiliser at a depth of 30 millimetres below the soil surface.

Each pair of discs was followed by a press wheel to assist with furrow closure.

Fertiliser treatments were applied at one of two times between the start of stem elongation and second node growth stages.

At each trial site, the ďŹ rst timing of application coincided with forecast rainfall in the days following, while the second timing of appli-

cation coincided with dry weather forecast in the days following.

This approach was used to examine the effects of rainfall following application on potential losses of N and fertiliser use efďŹ ciency of the crop. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Results from 2016 indicated that the beneďŹ t of mid-row banding to crop uptake of N was greater where rainfall was limited soon after application, and the surface applied urea was not washed into the rooting zone,â&#x20AC;? Mr Wallace said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This indicates that mid-row banding could be a more effective way of applying N under drier seasonal conditions.â&#x20AC;?

Wheat fungus a blotch on the crop horizon WHEAT farmers have been warned they could potentially lose half their crop if a fungus is allowed to grow unchecked.

Already reported in the Wimmera area, Septoria Tritici Blotch has the potential to devastate yields if left unchecked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Septoria was common in the Wimmera in low levels last year, and this has provided the carryover of inoculum for this year,â&#x20AC;? Agriculture Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cereal pathologist, Dr Grant Hollaway, said.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Given repeated wet conditions, which are favourable for the disease, Septoria can cause losses greater than 50 per cent.â&#x20AC;?

Early sown crops and crops sown into wheat stubbles are most at-risk, however, the disease has an early airborne component and all wheat crops should be scouted for symptoms.

Dr Hollaway said growers should look for symptoms on older leaves and immediate fungicide control needs to be implemented if Septoria is found.

Symptoms include pale grey to

dark brown lesions, which contain black fruiting bodies.

To manage Septoria, growers should be spraying at early stem elongation, and following up with a second application at flag leaf if necessary. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Because of increasing levels of resistance to fungicides in the Septoria Tritici Blotch population in Victoria, it is important that the same active ingredient is not used more than once in any season,â&#x20AC;? Dr Hollaway said.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Where possible, apply fungicides that contain a mix of actives.â&#x20AC;?

Adoption of an integrated disease management approach which includes crop rotation, selection of resistant cultivars and if necessary, the application of fungicides, were noted by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) as the most effective management tools.

Both weeds are listed as -Weeds of National SigniďŹ cance in Australia, reducing the productivity of pasture and creating a ďŹ re hazard In Victoria Chilean needle grass is classed as a restricted weed, prohibiting the trade of products contaminated with the seed.

This has immense ďŹ nancial implications for primary producers as the

seed readily contaminates crops, hay and fodder. In particular the grass poses problems for the sheep industry as the needle like seed burrows into ďŹ&#x201A;eece and skin causing injury and downgrading of the wool to skirtings and rejection of the carcase.

Alarmingly, the invasion is occurring largely unnoticed as it is commonly mistaken for other native grasses especially spear grasses,

wallaby grasses and tall fescue.

At present most of the infestations are on roadsides and waterways. The grass is easily dispersed but is primarily spread through attaching itself to vehicles, machinery and animals.

Serrated tussock (Nassella trichotoma) is a highly invasive, unpalatable, tussock-forming perennial grass. It produces large quantities of seed that easily outcompete and dominate pastures and native grass ecosystems.

AVERAGE SEASON: Wheat production is expected to drop by more than 30 per cent this year, according to the National Australia Bank Agri-business sector.

Wheat forecast predicts average season crop it was considered unlikely the same production level would be reached again this year.

National winter rainfall to date is below average, and decent rainfall is needed soon if wheat yields are to reach average levels.

While the El NiĂąo outlook has moderated signiďŹ cantly over the past few months, the Bureau of Meteorologyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest forecast still points to drier than average conditions across most of Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wheat regions into spring.

According to the Depart-

ment of Agriculture and Water Resources, the total area planted to winter crops across the country is forecast to fall by around one per cent in 2017-18, to 22.5 million hectares.

Areas planted to cereal crops are expected to decrease, but the area planted to canola, chickpeas and lentils is forecast to rise.

Canola plantations are forecast to rise in all major producing states, largely reďŹ&#x201A;ecting favourable expected returns compared with wheat, oats and barley.

THE National Australia Bank Agri-business sector has released their wheat forecast for the 2017 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 2018 season, and the news is not as good as ďŹ rst expected.

Following a dry start to winter and a mixed autumn break, the prediction is for a close to average wheat crop of 23.3 million tonnes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a 33.8 per cent drop in production on last season.

A BULLISH livestock market and positive grower sentiment will combine with a full house of exhibitors for the 54th annual Henty Machinery Field Days (HMFD).

An expected crowd of 60,000 visitors is expected at the September 19-21 event, where there will be almost $120 million worth of machinery and goods spread over the 100 hectare site.

Exhibitors will display their products on more than 1200 stalls in what is now the single largest agricultural and open-air event in southern Australia.

HMFD chief executive ofďŹ cer Belinda Anderson said this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ eld days were the largest on record in terms of exhibitor area, with 14km of shopfront. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The interest in the ďŹ eld days from exhibitors and visitors alike continues to grow year-on-year, with the site being the biggest itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ever been in terms of physical area,â&#x20AC;?

Nation’s best to compete in sheep and yard dog trials COMPETITION is expected to be intense at Henty this year as the nation’s best sheep dogs - and their handlers - gather for the Exelpet Sheep and Yard Dog Trials.

Run under the auspices of the NSW Sheepdog Workers Incorporated, the sheep field trial is set to attract more than 100 dogs and their workers from around Australia.

The Exelpet Murray Valley Yard Dog Championships, run

by the NSWYard Dog Association, is tipped to also attract more than 100 dogs.

Championships co-ordinator, Peter Darmody, said the event was one of the most prestigious on the calendar, and would draw the cream of the nation’s best dogs competing for more than $5000 in prize money.

The maiden trial will be held on Tuesday, September 19, followed by the novice and

open classes on Wednesday and Thursday.

The finals are due to get under way from 1pm on Thursday, September 21, with the winner receiving automatic entry to the 2017 NSW Yard Dog Championships.

Dogs will be fresh from last month’s South West Yard Dog Championships at West Wyalong, and the Rabobank Classic Darling River Championships at Wentworth.

The event is designed to demonstrate everyday skills a working dog would use on a farm.

Each entrant has 12 minutes to gather a mob of about 18 sheep, herd them through a draft, and then on and off a truck.

Starting on a score of 100, points are deducted for livestock and mishandling breakaway sheep and ineffective work.

Up to 450 sheep will be needed for the Exelpet Sheep Dog field trial heats and finals over the three days.

The event is limited to an open trial, with no encourager or novice classes, and handlers can enter their four best dogs.

The 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 sheep dog trial winner, Laurie Slater, of Murrumbateman, will return to compete this year.

Henty MOTY Award recognises innovative farm technology ENTRIES at the cutting edge of agricultural technology will line up before the judges in the prestigious Henty Machine of the Year Award.

Announced on the opening day, this â&#x20AC;&#x153;farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;choiceâ&#x20AC;? award is presented to the most outstanding new piece of agricultural machinery exhibited at the Henty Machinery Field Days.

It is judged by an independent panel of regional primary producers.

In many cases, the machine has gone on to become a standard piece of equipment on farms.

Judging criteria includes the machineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s purpose and suitability, scope of application, construction, ease of maintenance and service, ease of operation and adjustment, availability of parts and overall value for money.

This year, entries range from an innovative round-bale feed-

out system and offset slasher, to deep ripper from Western Australia, and one of the widest seed drills in the world from Canada, the 3420 PHD Paralink.

Last year, the award drew 24 entries - with the innovative sheep handling system, Back Up Charlie, entered by Charlie and Tana Webb, Urana, NSW, impressing judges with its design and manufacture.

Highly commended was the Miller Nitro 6365 self-propelled sprayer with Spray-Air â&#x201E;˘ Technology, from McIntosh Distribution, Redcliffe, WA. HMFD director, Nigel Scheetz, said the award was open to all machines on site released into the Australian market in the previous 12 months. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A win at Henty gives the entrant valuable exposure for their product,â&#x20AC;? Mr Scheetz said.

An additional accolade is the Greater Hume Shire Award for

the best newAustralian designed and manufactured machine.

It is judged and presented on the ďŹ nal day of the ďŹ eld days.

Last year, it was won by the Landaco Maxispread TS12000, from Landaco, Wagga.

DAIRY Australia has announced two nominees who will stand for board election as non-executive directors at the annual general meeting, to be held this November.

Both positions called for directors with milk producer skills.

Graeme Nicoll, who was appointed to the Dairy Australia board earlier this year to fill a casual vacancy, has been nominated as a director - as has Heywood based farmer, Tania Luckin.

Graeme has worked in the dairy industry for 20 years.

In partnership with his wife Gillian, he has managed a successful dairy business in Gippsland for the past 15 years, and currently milks approximately 300 cows.

Graeme served on the board of the GippsDairy Regional Development Program for five years and was chair of that board for two years.

He has also provided inputs to various scientific initiatives for the dairy industry, and has served as a member of the DPI’s “Dairy Directions Project” steering committee and the Dairy Co-operative Research Centre’s “Pasture Genomics Project” steering committee.

Graeme was awarded a Nuffield Scholarship in 2010 which enabled him to further his knowledge of dairy farming systems and enhance his network of national and international agricultural contacts, which assists him in keeping

He has formal science qualifications and earlier in his career, he worked as a horticulturist and in the soil science division of CSIRO. Tania Luckin has been nominated for the other vacant position.

Tania has been farming for 20 years in Australia, and together with her husband Stephen and their farm team, operates a 500 cow dairy farm in South West Victoria.

Tania has owned and operated a number of dairy farms of varying sizes and farming systems in both South West Victoria and South Australia.

She has been actively involved in industry projects and

governance, and served on the Bonlac Supply Company board from 2014 – 2016.

Tania is currently a member of the board of the WestVic Dairy Regional Development Program and a member of the Dairy Industry Advocacy Review Team.

She has formal qualifications in agriculture and business management, and has won several awards for business management for her dairy farm and a retail business she operated for five years.

Dairy Australia invited applications for the vacancies earlier this year.

All candidates will require more than 50 per cent of the votes cast at the Dairy Australia 2017 annual general meeting to be elected.

Victorian farmer elected president of Jersey Australia board JERSEY Australia has elected a new president, with Victorian farmer Chris McKenzie stepping into the role last month.

Mr McKenzie, who farms at Cooriemungle in the south-west, has been on the Jersey Australia board since its inauguration and was previously part of the Victorian committee.

His priorities include growth in genetics, promotion, milk marketing and improving services for members.

“All decisions we make have to focus on what is best for members; it’s a members’

organisation,” he said.

Mr McKenzie said the efficiency of Jersey cows should inspire an increase in market share.

“We believe we have a cow that is more efficient in producing something beneficial to the broader market.

“We will be focusing our promotion and milk marketing on these efficiencies in an era when everything counts for the bottom line.”

Mr McKenzie said Jersey Australia wanted to spark farmer interest in stud breeding and

help farmers to achieve a good return for their commitment to the industry.

“People want to see value and reward for being in the industry and that they can achieve something through genetics and stud breeding.

“There are a lot of hurdles facing the industry, but I have a strong passion for the Jersey cow and I’m convinced we have something of value to put forward to younger breeders and to other farmers.”

Mr McKenzie replaces Peter Ness as president.

Downer cows- The five M’s transition period around the time of calving.

The most common metabolic problems are ‘milk fever’ due to calcium deficiency or ‘grass tetany’ due to magnesium deficiency. Another imbalance that can occur is a deficiency in phosphorus although this is much less common in Australasia than some of the other metabolic problems. Energy deficiency syndromes such as ketosis can also result in a down cow. Ketosis occurs when an animal’s energy requirements are greater than the energy stores available to that animal. 4in1 bags of fluids which contain calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and dextrose are often useful in combating metabolic causes of recumbency.

Massive infection Septicaemia or bacteria in the blood stream can lead to a downer cow. Realistically this can be infection resulting from anywhere in the body from the lungs (pneumonia) to the joints. There are two forms of infection that are

particularly common causes of downer cows and these make up the last two M’s (below).

Metritis Metritis is an infection of the uterus that results in wider infection and generalised illness in the cow as a result of bacteria entering the bloodstream. Metritis most commonly occurs around the time of calving as an open cervix allows entry of bacteria into the uterus. Retained afterbirth and lack of hygiene around calving can increase the risk of metritis. Metritis can quickly be fatal so early intervention and medical treatment is often necessary.

Mastitis Mastitis is an infection of mammary tissue in the teat and udder. As with Metritis, mastitis can lead to systemic illness and recumbency if left untreated. Early detection and treatment offers the best chance of recovery for mastitis.

Free tree removal to prevent fruit fly pest IF you have fruit trees growing on urban residential land you may qualify to have your fruit trees removed.

Fruit trees on urban residential land are a major concern for local fruit growers as they can attract and support the breeding of Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF).

An initiative has been implemented across Greater Shepparton, Moira Shire, Campaspe Shire and Strathbogie Shire to encourage land owners of urban residential land to make application to have unwanted fruit trees removed free of charge.
