Sheep and Yard Dog Trials are once again a feature at the 2016 Henty Machinery Field Days set to take place on Tuesday, September 20 to Thursday, September 22. The Henty dog trials attracts the cream of the nation’s competition dogs and their handlers each year. The event is limited to an open trial, with no encourage or novice classes, and handlers enter their best four dogs. The threesheep field trial requires the dogs to move the sheep around a designed course. The dog and handler begin with 100 points, with points deducted by the judge for faults. The Pedigree Murray Valley Yard Dog championships are also run in conjunction with the Field Days.

ROSEWHITE-based cattle stud Pinnacle Angus has broken the liveweight price record at an online sale selling a pen of 34 mixed sex Wagyu x Angus weaners for 727 cents per kilo – 18 cents per kilo higher than the previous sale record.

The Australian Wagyu Association’s Premium Wagyu Sale on AuctionsPlus generated the new record price for the 11 to 12 monthold weaners from Pinnacle Angus, near Myrtleford, with the cattle weighing 225.6 kgs, giving stud principal Jake Howman $1640 per head.

Mr Howman, who runs the cattle stud with his wife and parents, said he was surprised at the price.

“We actually had a reserve of $6 on the weaners and we would have been very happy to take anything over that really,” he said.

“I was really surprised to be honest as it was the first time we have ever sold Wagyu cattle.”

Mr Howman said that selling online is a lot more cost effective and saves time as you do not have to leave your property or take the cattle to saleyards.

Independent assessors come to the property, assess the cattle, take photos and write up descriptions of the stock which is then placed online in a catalogue to be viewed before the sale takes place online.

“Major stock agencies use this type of selling a lot and I really do think it is the way of the future,” Mr Howman said.

Electronic tags prove to be beneficial for sheep producer

By JODIE FLEMING COLEDALE Poll Dorset stud principal Wallace Binnie has been using electronic identification tags (eID) on his sheep for the past three years and said he is really starting to see the benefits of having all the progeny and breeding information required to make commercial decisions instantly with the “wave of a wand”.

The Bungeet-based farmer has been breeding Poll Dorsets since 1969 on his 385 hectare property which also is occupied with cattle and crops.

The decision to use eIDs was encouraged by Mr Binnie’s daughter Kristy Taylor who now assists in running the farm and suggested using the tags “to help move the stud into the future”.

Mr Binnie said that for ease of data collection, recording and the day-today handling of sheep has proved much easier using the tagging system.

“From a commercial sense it is a wonderful asset to our stud as we are just able to wave a wand over the stock and know their background, progeny and breeding,” he said.

“I think it is a great thing for traceability and for anyone who is doing performance recording like we do.

“We take data several times per year – we weigh at birth, at weaning and at post weaning and many other times we are recording weights, so using the system lets us know which ewe is performing or not.

“It is much quicker for culling and knowing which ewes to keep and with our rams, after we have visually selected them first, we can then scan them and see which ones have about the same index and you can lot them together for sale.

“It has been a really good step forward,” Mr Binnie said.

goats born in Victoria will require an electronic identification tag in a recent move announced by Victorian Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford.

The identification tag will be linked to the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) before being dispatched to a saleyard, abattoir or another property.

Victoria’s chief veterinary officer Charles Milne said the aim is to make sure the transition to electronic identification over the coming years is as smooth as possible for producers.

“There will be a phased implementation for electronic identification starting with consultation across the sheep and goat industries on how we can make this work practically across the entire supply chain,” he said.

“Once the implementation standards are confirmed, Agriculture Victoria will co-ordinate information sessions and workshops to help farmers understand the system, and where appropriate, to use it to enhance onfarm decisions.”

Dr Milne added that producers should not rush into any purchases now and should wait to find out what funding and information will be available in the next few weeks.

The State Government has made a commitment to keep the costs for farmers neutral for the first year of the change with two suppliers of eID tags having already dropped their prices.

Allflex has reduced the price of its electronic RapIDTag to 89 cents and Datamars has reduced its FET tag to 80 cents, while also reducing

the price of its cattle tags to 82 cents.

The cheapest electronic tag currently available is manufactured by Victorian-based suppliers Leader Products and costs 77 cents.

Mr Binnie said the use of eIDs is cost effective as it saves time by not having to manually check each and every sheep.

“As an industry it’s not any more difficult to have the electronic tags as you have to tag them in the ear anyway.

“For issues like foot and mouth disease and for traceability of stock it is very cost effective.

“Cattle already have it and I’m not sure why other states haven’t embraced it yet, but surely it’s only a matter of time before they do,” he added.

VFF to ensure eIDs do not have farmers facing additional costs THE Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) livestock group president Leonard Vallance said the lobby group is determined to negotiate the best outcome for producers following the announcement of mandatory electronic tagging for sheep and goats.

“We will be working hard to ensure farmers and other stakeholders will not face additional costs by this decision of government to mandate electronic tags in sheep and goats,” he said.

“Livestock producers need a guarantee that they won’t be disadvantaged by the cost of fitting electronic tags to their stock.

“The State Government has offered to invest in eIDs for the first year, but this investment needs to be guaranteed for the long term.

“Governments – state and federal – need to remember they have a community obligation to contribute to the cost of traceability when it comes to major livestock disease outbreaks that affect everyone, not just farmers,” Mr Vallance said.

He added that the group is determined to negotiate the best outcome for livestock producers to ensure there is no impact on livestock operations across Victoria.

“We will make it clear to government that the cost of post farm gate eID infrastructure must not be imposed on farmers,” he said.

Not all groups are happy about the mandatory tagging with the Australian Livestock and Property Agents Association (ALPA) frustrated and disappointed with the decision.

The ALPA said the decision goes against the State Government’s commitment to national industry bodies and other states and territories that it would not mandate tags until a national approach was agreed on and with industry consultation.

The group said the total disregard for this commitment and lack of national consultation is disappointing.

ALPA chief executive officer Andy Madigan said no one from the State Government can demonstrate how the system can work in a saleyard environment at commercial speeds.

Inquiry into dairy industry to uncover inequities DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Barnaby Joyce announced that an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) inquiry into the national dairy industry is set to take place in November.

Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison will request the ACCC to undertake an inquiry under Part VIIA of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 which will give the Commission powers to obtain information from companies to investigate.

In announcing the inquiry at a recent Dairy Symposium, Minister Joyce said the nation’s dairy farmers deserve fair returns at the farm gate, as well as transparency in milk price arrangements and supply contracts.

“An in-depth and independent inquiry is a thorough and fair way to uncover inefficiencies and inequities that our farmers face – and identify a way forward,” he said.

“I encourage everyone in the dairy industry to contribute to the inquiry – there will be confidentiality arrangements in place to ensure the ACCC gets the information it needs while protecting commercial interests.”

Minister Joyce said the symposium was a chance to get key stakeholders together to facilitate industry-led options to address challenges facing the Australian dairy industry and discuss ways to improve the industry’s prospects going forward.

“Recent events have shown there is a need for the industry to better balance risk along the dairy supply chain, especially when it comes to managing the effects of lower world prices.

“Ultimately, I want to see improved farm gate returns for dairy farmers, an openness in milk price arrangements and fair and transparent milk supply contracts.

“This can only happen if there is buy-in from industry and a willingness from key stakeholders to hear each other out and develop solutions together.

“The Coalition government will continue to work with our dairy farmers and processors to strengthen the dairy industry, including our election commitment of up to $2 million to establish a commodity milk price index.

“The symposium provided an opportunity for stakeholders to put forward early views on this,” Minister Joyce said.

The ACCC will release an issues paper and engage with stakeholders through public and private hearings, and written submissions to deliver a final report to government in the second half of 2017.

ACCC inquiry into dairy industry too late for some

By SHANE DOUTHIE NOT everyone is convinced the upcoming Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) inquiry into the national dairy industry will help dairy farmers currently facing ruin following the collapse of the farmgate milk price.

The inquiry was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Barnaby Joyce at a recent Dairy Symposium in Melbourne and will look at the sharing of risk along the supply chain, supply agreements and contracts, competition, bargaining and trade practices in the industry and the effect of world and retail prices on profitability.

Local share farmer Jody Boyd, who milks about 250 cows a day at a dairy between Wangaratta and Oxley, supplying Murray Goulburn,

said the support offered to dairy farmers was “pathetic”.

“I think it’s way too late for some people…a lot shut down within a couple of weeks and although you have to think some of them were probably close to shutting down anyway, many didn’t have any choice,” he said.

“Barnaby Joyce should have done something straight away, instead of waiting a couple of months.

“He might as well have stayed at home.

“You imagine having your pay cut in half, and then still having to turn up and do the same amount of work every day,” Mr Boyd said.

He added that he was fortunate because his costs were relatively low as he was a share farmer and he did not have the big input costs, but it was still going to be tough.

“We will stay in dairy.

“I’ve put 20 years of breeding

in our cows, so I won’t be selling.

“It’s the younger ones who have already lost so much that I feel sorry for…it is just so cruel,” Mr Boyd said.

He said he knew of dairy farmers who had tried to access some of the support packages rolled out by the government, but they had been frustrated by the process and the time to get a result.

“It’s just all the rigmarole you have to go through…the amount of forms you have to fill out is ridiculous.

“We’re luckier here in the North East, we have pretty reliable low cost water and feed is a reasonable cost, but the guys in the Goulburn Valley are doing it tough.”

Mr Boyd said he believed Murray Goulburn (MG) directors should be accountable for their mistakes but the current situation had to be taken in a wider context.

“MG is still one of the safest dairy

companies due to a lot of initiatives that the board introduced over the years,” he said.

“We could have been in a worse position.”

He said he believed that supermarkets held a large proportion of the blame in the current situation, affecting not only dairy, but other primary producers.

“They are just too ruthless.

“At the end of the day if you take advantage of one group (dairy farmers) to offer cheap prices ($1 milk for example) to another group, it’s just plain wrong.”

Mr Boyd said MG was no longer a true co-operative with the company now having to report first to the market rather than its farmers.

“In the old days we would have a conversation over the fence and understand what was going on,” he said.

“Now it’s all hush-hush.”

Better engagement with basin communities is the way forward for Murray Darling Basin THE Murray Darling Basin Authority’s (MDBA) recent announcement that it will decentralise some of its functions has been welcomed by the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) with the lobby group believing the move will better connect the authority with basin communities.

VFF water council chairman Richard Anderson said the VFF sees the decentralisation move as an opportunity for the interests of Victorian river communities to be better considered in the rollout of the basin plan.

“The MDBA has always been criticised for sitting in an

‘ivory tower’ in Canberra and not understanding basin communities or how the basin plan is impacting them,” he said.

“We’ve said for a long time that the MDBA should be decentralised.

“It has taken four years living under the basin plan for the MDBA to understand that

connection to communities is essential in basin plan roll-out.

“Pulling river operations out of Canberra is the obvious first step and there are a number of Victorian river communities that are prime candidates to host a new office,” Mr Anderson said.

Analysis released this month showed the basin plan had

caused job losses and negative social impacts in northern basin communities.

“I think these figures have encouraged this move to shift jobs to the regions.

“The MDBA needs to immerse themselves in basin communities to really understand what the basin plan

implementation means for these communities and build this into their work going forward.

“What we would like to see from this move is better use of local knowledge in basin plan implementation and improved engagement with basin communities,” Mr Anderson added.

“We are now actually starting up our own beef label that we are going to sell at some local farmers’ markets at Myrtleford and maybe Bright, called Happy Beef,” he added.

THE rise of the Wangaratta Livestock Exchange to become one of the premium saleyards in North East Victoria has been a godsend for many long term users of the facility.

For many local farming families the market has been a part of their lives for generations.

David Evans from Moyhu is one of the saleyards’ biggest supporters and his family’s links to the operation go back over a century, well before it was on its current site.

His family traded at the saleyards early in the 20th century when they were situated where King George Gardens are now before they shifted to Batchelor’s Green in the late 1930s and Mr Evans’ brother, Doug, was mayor of the rural city when the saleyards moved to Shanley Street in 1977 (Oxley Shire was represented by (late) Crs Algy Swinburne and Tom Wadley and Wangaratta Shire by Crs Bill McCormack and Jack O’Keefe).

Mr Evans has been selling his cattle in Wangaratta for over 60 years and he believes the new complex

has the potential to double or even treble its capacity.

“It’s a better set-up than Barnawartha for showing off cattle, it’s better for the animals and it’s better for the vendors,” he said.

“The local yards also have fat cattle pre-sale weighing which is better for the vendors and better for the cattle’s welfare.

“The new roofing also protects the soft standing in the pens although they could probably put even more soft standing in the yards to make it even better.”

He said the smaller yardings at Wangaratta also favoured vendors, particularly smaller producers.

“Sometimes the smaller producers can be swamped by much bigger yardings like at Wodonga,” Mr Evans said.

“But Wangaratta also has the ability to present large lines of cattle very well, particularly at store sales or the Blue Ribbon sales.”

He said all the Wangaratta saleyards needed to build on its success was more support from agents and vendors.

“It’s important the agents support the saleyards,” he said.

Mr Evans said the cooperative concept for the management of the complex was “a reasonable way to go”, however, he

believed for the moment it should remain under control of the Wangaratta council with a good management committee in place.

Time is up for farmers to stop backpacker tax

TRAVELLING WORKFORCE: Backpackers provide labour to many rural industries, but the extent to which they are taxed is a hot potato.

TIME has run out for farmers wanting to convince the Federal Government to abandon its backpacker tax, with submissions having to be lodged on the controversial tax by September 2.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Barnaby Joyce recently announced a review of the government’s proposed 32.5 per cent tax on working holiday makers which is due to come into effect on January 1, 2017.

Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) horticulture vice president Emma Germano said that while it is “great” the Federal Government is taking notice of the people who will be affected by the tax; those wanting to lodge submissions to the review only have until the early September deadline.

“Backpackers are a major source of labour for farmers across the nation and this tax threatens to drive them away, to choose working holidays in other nations,” she said.

“Our farmers know the backpacker tax is a serious threat to their ability to recruit

“But we’ve been fighting this tax for more than a year, in which time we came up with solutions that the government rejected.

“So it’s frustrating that we now have less than a month to come back and tell them what we’ve already said,” Ms Germano said.

She added that the review process should have started earlier to give the community and government more time to make an informed decision on the future of the backpacker tax.

“Instead of starting a new review process, the government should have provided some kind of feedback on our submission to the last review of the tax (in April this year).

“The backpacker tax is a

threat to two of our biggest industries – agriculture and tourism – and it isn’t going to go away until it’s dealt with properly.

“Working holiday makers bring in about $3.5 billion to the Australian economy every year, and we risk losing that revenue if the backpacker tax goes ahead,” she said.

The backpacker tax was scheduled to be implemented from July 1 this year but was delayed pending a further review.

The VFF together with the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) lodged a submission opposing the tax.

NFF president Brent Finlay said that while he was pleased the review was finally under way a quick resolution ruling out the measure is what the industry expects.

“NFF will actively participate in the review, and will be seeking to meet with

the consultants leading the review as soon as possible, to ensure they understand how important this issue is for Australian agriculture.

“We continue to urge the government to abandon this ill-conceived measure which will ultimately damage the economy in the long term,” Mr Finlay said.

AUSVEG national manager – public affairs Jordan Brooke-Barnett said the national body representing Australia’s vegetable growers is pleased that the review has commenced but added it would be “incredibly disappointing” to see growers suffer as a result of a “shortsighted policy decision” that failed to acknowledge the flow-on effects of having backpackers live and work in regional Australia.

“We’d like to see this review result in a sensible solution that acknowledges the vital role that backpackers play in the vegetable industry, as well as many other industries, and avoids damaging regional economies,” he said.

All set for bumper Henty Field Days WIDESPREAD rain across the mixed farming belt and strong commodity prices will combine with a full house of exhibitors at the 53rd annual Henty Machinery Field Days (HMFD).

The 105ha grounds are at capacity with the event expected to draw a crowd of 60,000 keen to inspect more than $100 million worth of machinery on site.

More than 850 exhibitors will display their products on more than 1200 sites in what is now the single largest agricultural and open-air event in southern Australia which is set to take place on Tuesday, September 20 to Thursday, September 22.

As the Henty Machinery Field Days heads into its 53rd year, an economic impact study revealed the event contributes $92 million to the national economy.

The study undertaken by Crowe Horwarth last year showed the ďŹ eld days created around $30 million in economic value and sustained 321 fulltime jobs in southern NSW and northern Victoria.

HMFD chairman Ross Edwards said the study had certainly spelt out the importance of the ďŹ eld days. “Not only in this region but across Australia – to think this is the result of a one day header school in the 1960s makes one feel humble to be the leader

of this massive achievement,� he said.

This year marks the 40th anniversary since the co-operative moved to a permanent site on the Cookardinia Road, east of Henty.

Grain growers will be able to inspect 22 wheat varieties, including a potential replacement for Wedgetail, at the site’s dedicated agronomy plots.

Farm inventors, backyard tinkerers and students will

display their innovative ideas at the Agri-Innovators site.

The entries had to meet the criteria of having a practical onfarm application, be based on an original idea of the entrant and not be in full scale production at the time of entry.

However, the area of rice planted is set to increase, the area of cotton planted is set to increase, as is the area of nuts grown and the dairy contracts for NSW will probably maintain production.

The price of temporary water for Murrumbidgee is under $100 per megalitre (/ML) for NSW Murray and Murray Irrigation is $105/ML. The season looks very good, with soil profiles filled with ample July and August rains.

The increase in Snowy Mountain storages and the rapid rise of Lake Hume will present well for allocation increases for both NSW and Victoria.

Victoria looks set to get 100 per cent allocation earlier than expected for Murray while we await an announcement from Northern Victorian resource manager Mark Bailey the status of spill for Victoria Murray and Goulburn.

On September 12 the question will arise regarding what will happen if spill is declared for Murray, part cancelled or total spill account cancelled.

The largest spill account is with the Commonwealth

Goulburn is slower to gain capacity with Eildon only on 60 per cent, and the allocations for Goulburn should be less than Murray in the immediate future.

On the Darling Wilcannia 5900 ML/day there is currently in excess of 200,000 ML heading for Menindee which is currently at 188 gigalitres (GL) and Lake Victoria is at 559GL, which is close to full.

What this means is that Victoria’s obligation to deliver water to South Australia will be minimal compared to previous seasons.

The question arises: why do we have a budget figure fixed for transitional flow into Lake Hume to the South Australian border when the water for South Australia is being supplied from free flow already in Lake Victoria?

This should be addressed

by Goulburn Murray Water and the Murray Darling Basin Authority.

Some 170,000 ML should be redirected as allocation for everyone.

Currently the Barmah Choke is closed for temporary water downstream and intrastate trade is closed form NSW to Victoria.

This may change if Victoria announces a spill of Lake Hume.

Temporary water will then go to a common price between NSW Murray and Victoria Murray and trades from Zone 6 to Zone 7 and Zone 1 should also open up.

Temporary trade has been very slow in August as there is little use or demand to buy at this time.

I urge farmers to hold until the issue of spill is resolved for Victoria.

Genetic bee research could protect Aussie bees from Varroa mite THE development of a genetic test that allows imports of semen from honey bees from resistant breeding stock is one step closer thanks to research from Australian scientists.

Beekeepers will be able to protect themselves from the devastating Varroa mite with a new test likely to allow imports of honey bee semen from resistant breeding stock without putting the industry at risk from another pest – Africanised bees.

Africanised bees are hybrids of European honey bees and A. m. capensis from Africa that are highly aggressive, unsuitable for beekeeping, and extremely invasive.

The development of a genetic test to differentiate Africanised bees from non-Africanised bees could allow imports of honey bee semen from countries that have desirable stock, but also have Africanised bees.

The research has been carried

out by Nadine Chapman and Ben Oldroyd from the University of Sydney as part of the Honey Bee and Pollination Program, a partnership between the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC), Horticulture Innovation Australia and the Australian Government.

Chair of the program’s advisory panel Michael Hornitzky said honey bee breeders in Australia have a keen interest in importing

strains of honey bees bred for resistance to diseases, as well as other types of genetically improved stock.

“Australia is currently home to the only significant population of Varroa-free European honey bees in the world but we cannot be complacent as our bees have little resistance to this mite,” he said.

“While we’ve been able to import queen bees from countries without Africanised bees, this will allow semen to be tested and

brought in from other countries without the risk of importing Africanised bees as well as Varroa which is not transmitted through semen.”

Dr Hornitzky said the research is of even greater importance in the wake of a species of Varroa mite being found on Asian Honey bees in Townsville, North Queensland.

“The opportunity to import more strains of bees that have been bred for resistance to

the Varroa mite would offer a safeguard for the future of not only our industry, but also the broader agriculture sector that relies so heavily on a healthy honey bee population,” he said.

He added that the Africanised honey bee test offers exciting possibilities in regards to the draft policy review for the importation of honey bee semen currently being considered by policy makers.

POPULAR EVENT: There will be plenty on offer for visitors at this year’s Elmore Field Days with some 700 stalls featuring the latest and greatest technology on offer.

EACH year the organisers of Elmore Field Days offer patrons something new to the three-day event and this year’s exciting new addition is the live music on site with three different performers on each day.

Starting on Tuesday, October 4 and running through to Thursday, October 6, with gates opening at 8.30am and closing at 5.30pm each day, visitors to the 2016 event will be treated to as many as 700 stalls featuring the latest technology and handy gadgets.

The field days showcase some of the latest machinery, innovation and techniques used in the agricultural industry.

The popular Ag Art Wear Competition is back for its 16th year, with designers battling it out for the best garment from materials found on the farm or land.

Mental health will be a central focus this year with many guest speakers and activities over the three days.

Jason McCartney will be attending the Elmore Field Days as this year’s guest speaker.

Mr McCartney became a national hero in the wake of the Bali Bombings in 2002.

A young Australian with an exceptional talent for Australian Rules football, he was quickly placed into the hearts and minds of all through his courageous fight-back from the horrible burns he suffered in Bali.

This year there will be an Equestrian Showcase encompassing demonstrations as well as many exhibitors within the equine industry.

The shearing shed will be packed full of demonstrations as well as guest speakers.

There is more to see and do this year inside the General

Interest Pavilion, hosting many new exhibitors.

The Agribusiness Pavilion will be packed, hosting more than 100 exhibitors.

Camel Milk Victoria will be returning again after being such a hit last year with their soap, body butters and laundry detergents.

For those who love photography there will be a photography competition with many prizes on offer and the opportunity to have photos placed in the 2017 Elmore Field Days calendar.

Elmore Field Days is held at the Elmore Events Centre, 48 Rosaia Road, Elmore.

Country life inspires young performer’s passion for music WHEN she’s not studying at Melbourne University for a Bachelor of Agricultural Science, Laura Byrne is taking part in her passion of performing country/folk music and is part of this year’s Elmore Field Days live entertainment line-up.

At just 18 years of age, Laura is a CMAA Academy Of Country Music graduate and has already released a self-titled debut EP. The EP features co-writes with some of Australian country music’s finest including Alan Caswell, Drew McAlister and Brianna Lee, while the music was bought to life by producer Simon Johnson and his team of musicians Vaughan Jones, Glen Hannah, Pete Drummond and Dave Ristrim.

Music has been a part of family life for Laura who grew up singing with her cousins and grandparents.

Spending her childhood on the family farm in northern Victoria has given Laura a passion for all things country which can be heard through her songs.

Laura spent her childhood in and out of hospital with serve allergies including eczema, asthma and ear infections.

These infections lead to hearing complications, which caused her to be deaf and created speech problems.

After two operations Laura’s hearing improved and is now free from difficulties most of the time.

This is where singing lessons helped Laura to boost her confidence and speech as well as her love of music.

Laura’s classical training opened many doors for her including 13 musical theatre productions, four of them in the lead role.

Over the years, Laura has received two Georgie Award nominations from the Goulburn Valley Theatre Awards.

SONG BIRD: Growing up in northern Victoria has given Laura Byrne a passion for all things country which can be heard through her songs.

ELMORE and District Machinery Field Days Inc has grown since 1964 to be a leader of agricultural field days across Australia by celebrating and supporting rural industries and communities.

The past year has seen an enormous growth in relationships with our sponsors and strategic partners, coming together to provide economic benefits to our organisation and thus local communities and the region.

This is the result of professionalism and hard work from our dedicated committee, members, event centre staff and volunteers working together to ensure we honour our visitors and exhibitors

WHETHER you are farming, contracting or clearing the back yard, a specialised cutting attachment for your brushcutter has been designed to eliminate the frustration of using nylon cord and conventional steel blades.

David Thorne has developed and manufactured the Weedwakka, designed for heavy vegetation such as blackberry and said the attachment’s hardened steel blades will cut anything from grass to thumb thickness woody weeds without ever needing sharpening.

“If the blades strike a rock they are able to deflect, greatly reducing the kick back, and minimising stress on the brushcutter,” he said.

“This makes the Weedwakka Heavy Duty ideal for clearing scrub in rocky country.”

There are two models of Weedwakka – the Weedwakka Heavy Duty and the Weedwakka MultiCut. The Weedwakka MultiCut has flexible nylon blades that cut cleanly through much heavier vegetation than nylon cord will handle.

The blades are clearly visible when rotating, and can be used around trees without damaging the bark.

The MultiCut is ideal for cutting along paths, walls and netting fences, as it eliminates the constant breakage and rapid wear common to nylon cord.

When the blades are worn, they can be replaced in seconds without the use of tools.

Both Weedwakka models are designed for straight shaft brushcutters, and are easily attached in exactly the same way as a conventional steel blade.

The Weedwakka complies with Australian Standard AS3575-1995 and meets Work Cover requirements.

Depending on the fertiliser mix the Tow and Fert will spray up to 24 metres.

The machines are sold with the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own computer program, taking the guess work out of mixing variables and by utilising the on board scales, accurate mixes can be achieved, saving money on your fertilisers.

All machines have the ability to spray any fertiliser that is soluble, fine particle or liquid with ease.

The Rex 600 essentially is a smaller version of the hugely successful Rex 900 firewood processor.

The Rex 600 utilises the multi head blade system mounted on a fully towable unit, which folds up to the size of a small trailer.

This system is incredibly efficient, and can produce between eight and 12 cubic metres of split firewood per hour with two people operating the machine.

“The Rex 600 utilises a Kohler 40hp diesel engine, which developed up to 28 tons of power at the base of the blade easily splitting the toughest Australian hardwood with ease,” Mr Burder explained.

“Then factor in a powerful block lifter and roller bench, a four metre out-feed elevator for stockpiling and a safe and easy to use control system and what you’ve got is the perfect solution to splitting firewood for profit.”

All machines are designed and built in North East Victoria distributing throughout Australia and New Zealand and employing a workforce of 22 people.

SO WHAT’S A KG OF DRY MATTER WORTH? You are about to sow a summer forage crop?

With dairy prices depressed, the temptation is to cut costs by buying cheaper forage crop seed.

And any saving is worthwhile; isn’t it? Well, not always.

The cost of seed is minor relative to the extra production that a high performing variety can deliver – particularly when the sowing rate of forage crops is usually only 3-4kgs per hectare.

A case in point is Pillar forage rape – a high yielding, multi-graze rape which our company has recently commercialized.

Trial results show that depending on conditions and management, Pillar can yield up to 2 tonnes of Dry Matter per hectare more than lower performing varieties.

If Dry Matter from summer forage crops is worth say $0.25 to $0.30/kg, that’s $250 - $300 for every tonne of Dry Matter that you could be gaining; or for that matter losing depending on your choice of variety.

Demand remains strong for good quality hay A LEADING Australian feed trader has debunked claims that the hay market is in decline.

Feed Central managing director Tim Ford said demand for hay remains strong and good quality product will continue to fetch good prices. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s talking about there being a big hay crop and talking the market down, but right now there is strong demand for hay and shortage of quality product,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re now in the market looking for product to meet that demand.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Ford said last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drought, low stockpiles in hay sheds, difďŹ culties in accessing some supplies due to wet weather, and strong demand from the beef sector and exports had combined to keep the market strong.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some are talking the market down but we have an alternative view â&#x20AC;&#x201C; right now there is a shortage and we have buyers,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Ford said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There has been strong demand all winter and we need product now.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Ford said the cold and wet winter across Australia had been good for trade but could lead to access and quality problems. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It has been a good growing season but there have been problems with cattle getting on the paddocks and bogging paddocks, which leads to strong demand for hay. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every hayshed in the country is empty and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no carry-over of stock, but customers still want product.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Ford said many growers had

been unable to apply fertiliser due to the wet weather and waterlogging could also affect future yields, however, demand remains strong. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The beef market is very strong with an increased demand for hay and at some point the dairy industry will recover,â&#x20AC;? he said.

He added that predictions of lower prices reďŹ&#x201A;ected an uneducated view of the market. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the price will come back in the new season. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The fundamental requirements for new-season product remain the same; easy all-weather access to a good quality product with minimal weather damage in a heavy large square bale and shedded over multiple months.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Ford said there was a risk of a lot of poor quality hay because of

the wet conditions but good growers would get good returns. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The professional grower who makes good quality hay should and will be rewarded for their efforts and get very good returns,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The export market remains strong and the signiďŹ cant price setter, particularly in Victoria.

Mr Ford said that if the export hay market sets the price above $200 a tonne, domestic growers would be happy with a discount off that while maintaining good prices. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no need to give it away,â&#x20AC;? he added. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Good quality hay will sell ďŹ rst and sell for good money and there are orders right now for immediate delivery.â&#x20AC;?

for sale in November last year.

Such was the demand that this resulted in a clearance of 110 head to a top of $30,000 and an average of $6681.

“Our clients are very faithful.

More than 500 rams on offer at upcoming Chrome Sheep Stud sale HAMILTON seedstock producers and Chrome Sheep Stud principals Matt and Tanya Tonissen have all bases covered when it comes to supplying genetics for the prime lamb industry.

High weaning percentages, good growth rates and easy care attributes in a moderate framed ewe, are just a few of the benefits of all the Chrome maternal ewes.

“We have clients regularly marking 140 per cent to 150 per cent to ewes joined across their mature ewe flock.

“We’ve seen a shift in lambing dates, as producers are now looking to better match pasture growth with their ewes’ nutritional requirements, therefore lambing later in the season,” he said.

“The ICON Southies are proving to be a real hit with Merino producers and those mating ewe lambs and maidens.”

All rams are recorded on Lambplan and ASBVs for all the economic traits are supplied in the stud’s sale catalogue.

Strathview’s composite flock achieves 181 per cent lambs weaned ACCORDING to Strathview Coopworth’s stud principal Tim Lubke the high weaning percentages of his sheep are testament to the mothering ability of the stud’s maternal flocks.

“We put a large emphasis on the maternal trait as it is crucial for lamb survival, especially when we experience cold, wet and windy weather,” Mr Lubke said.

After a 196 per cent pregnancy scanning result last year, Strathview sold 20 per cent of its flock scanned in lamb to drys and singles on Auctions Plus.

Strathview maternal genetics were able to achieve 181 per cent lambs weaned over the entire flock of 2000 ewes after lambing down twins and triplets on its Riverina properties.

The Strathview flock had a similar scanning result this year and again sold ewes scanned in lamb to singles and drys and will be looking at a similar result this year.

The Strathview and Spring View properties are owned and run by husband and wife combination Tim and Rebekah Lubke.

The properties are located between the southwest slopes and the Riverina, 72km from Albury, 68km from Wagga

Strathview maternal genetics are renowned for their superior maternal traits.

“Our clients are consistently receiving greater than 75 per cent multiples in their scan-

ning results each year,” Mr Lubke said.

“We have carefully selected high fertility and high growth rams to ensure large weaning percentages in our flocks.

“Strathview-sired flocks are also reaping the rewards of

joining ewes at seven months of age, with up to 90 per cent of the young ewes being scanned in lamb to ensure all ewes are productive on the property.”

The main focus of the stud is to breed ewes that are highly profitable in self replacing and

first-cross flocks.

All Strathview rams are lamb planned and are selected for their performance traits.

Tim Lubke has been sourcing top genetics from New Zealand for the past seven years and has undergone an Embryo

Transfer (ET) program this year allowing him to broaden his genetic pool, outsourcing the best genetics Australia and New Zealand has to offer.

“This is the reason behind achieving outstanding results,” he said.

“Farmers are benefiting from their mothering ability, excellent lamb survival, high fertility and rapid growth rates.”

Strathview’s maternal composite line allows the stud to fast track genetics.

This has allowed producers to select high ranking rams with tighter skins and clean points.

The majority of these rams are going into maternal composite flocks.

The Coopworth Rams have also been used for breeding first-cross ewes.

Strathview’s ram sale will be held on property at Henty on Tuesday, October 11.

Inspections will start from 9am, with the sale commencing at 12 noon.

Farmers will have the opportunity to select rams in the top 20 per cent of the maternal breed index including an offering of rams in the top one per cent.

the fluke called metacercariae. The completion of the liver fluke lifecycle also requires the presence of snails which act as an intermediate host to the parasite. The diagram below depicts the lifecycle of the liver fluke.

Fluke most commonly occurs in paddocks which have swampy and wet conditions. Calves and yearlings are most commonly affected and will undergo gradual but steady weightloss. If the infection is severe enough anaemia, weakness and death will follow. Reduced milk production and fluid accumulation at the lower point of the jaw can also occur (often referred to as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bottle jawâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;- this can be associated with several clinical conditions- NOT just fluke).

Treatment can be successful if the disease is caught early and involves drenching with products such as Fasinex® and Tremacide® which contain the ingredient â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Triclabendazole.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; In general if fluke is a problem on a particular property an autumn treatment and a spring treatment of these drenches can be useful to prevent egg contamination of pasture, drenching can begin in calves from 6months of age and can continue until the animal calves. k/12d12235-v33/3716
