Farmers read good news in Murray sustainability report Supply of 500 gigalitres plausible under SDL adjustment mechanism

THE recent release of an independent study into recovering water in the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) has been met with overwhelming approval by farming groups and stakeholders. But Environment Victoria has criticised state and federal water ministers as having a “hard hat mentality” on the issue. The MDB ministerial council, which includes environment parliamentary secretary Bob Baldwin, state members of parliament Niall Blair (NSW), Lisa Neville (Victoria), Anthony Lynham (Queensland), Ian Hunter (South Australia) and Simon Corbell (ACT), recently released an independent sustainable diversion limit (SDL) adjustment stocktake report for the basin. It shows that a supply contribution of about 500 gigalitres is plausible under the SDL adjustment mechanism and that a

further contribution is feasible. The finding means that it is reasonable for governments to work towards a supply outcome of up to 650 gigalitres. The council also released a statement stating that the Commonwealth is prioritising infrastructure and is capping water purchases at 1500 gigalitres. “The operation of the SDL adjustment mechanism will help to further reduce the need for water purchase,” the statement said. “This will provide Basin communities with confidence that the Basin Plan is delivering the best possible social, economic and environmental outcomes.
