SAFFRON GOLD KEVIN and Marie Marriott’s farm is located in Archerton, on the outskirts of Tolmie. Situated on 100 acres of rich red soil, the plateau has a huge spring-fed damn that provides more than ample water for their saffron crop. Not being a thirsty plant, irrigation was not one of their main concerns when initially researching the possibilities of saffron in the area. Pictured is Kevin with his crop. Turn to pages 4 and 5 for their story.

FOUR years ago, Lizabeth and Jayson Souness bought Wrenwood, a small acreage farm in Bungowannah, with the intention of opening a farm shop, gallery and nursery. The location was very important with Wrenwood conveniently located a short 10 minute drive from either Albury or Howlong, on the Riverina Highway. “It is a beautiful spot, with deep loamy soils, consistent rainfall even in drought, and most importantly a strong and supportive farming community, THE Landcare movement has celebrated 30 years of all sections of Australian society working together to improve the environment and create more productive farm land. Minister for Agriculture, Senator Bridget McKenzie, marked the anniversary in Parkville with a host of people involved in Landcare over the last 30 years, and announced Sophie TaylorPrice as the new Landcare ambassador. “The Australian Government stands by Landcare as it celebrates this important milestone and goes from strength to strength, Senator McKenzie said. “The government committed $1.1 billion in the 2017-18 budget for the second phase of the National Landcare Program. “Today I announced our $14.4 million investment over five years for Landcare Australia Limited and the National Landcare Network. “This funding will be used to enhance engagement with rural communities, improve communication and support the sharing of

knowledge — helping to breakdown that disconnect that exists between the city and the bush. “Landcare isn’t just a movement — it’s an immovable force. “For 30 years Landcare has transcended politics and ideologies. “As I said in my condolence motion to Parliament, Bob Hawke gave the Landcare movement legitimacy and a champion in the highest office of the country. “We now have the combined might of the more than 6000 Landcare groups across the country, in both cities and the bush. “Australians have an international reputation as sustainable land managers, and Landcare has helped to foster this. “The government is determined to maintain high environmental standards, supporting sustainable farming methods and sharing best practice to grow Australian agriculture to $100 billion by 2030.

Record prices predicted for the cattle market ELDERS Yea recently welcomed Jamie Quinlan to the team. With extensive experience in the industry, Jamie has relocatHG IURP WKH 3DNHQKDP RIo FH WR take over from Ryan Sargent. Jamie is optimistic about the current market, with cattle prices in the last month or so, rising a very healthy 20 to 30 per cent, on late autumn and early winter prices. “A month and a half ago, we thought this might happen, but there was no guarantee, Jamie said. “For those farmers who’ve held onto their cattle throughout this, they may owe a lot of money for feed, but they will get paid the money for them.

“It’s hard to get prime fat cattle at the moment, and a lot of people are chasing cattle with weight to turn over quickly, and they’re just not there. Understandably this is driving the market, with plenty of cattle rising anywhere between 50 and 80 cents per kilo, with a lot dearer increase for wellbred British breeds like the Angus and the Hereford. Jamie doesn’t see this trend ending anytime soon. “All classes of cattle, espeFLDOO\ o QLVKHG SULPH FDWWOH ZLOO certainly continue to get a little bit dearer, he said. “I believe that September and maybe even early October will be the critical point which dictates where the market goes.

“If there’s still grass around, the fat numbers will be in very short supply, and I think we may see prices that we haven’t seen previously. With such a positive outlook for the current market, farmer FRQo GHQFH LV UHDVRQDEO\ KLJK Given the way the season has been with a bit of rain in the central North East and the grass growth, the country is not looking too bad. For those who have been feeding their animals, and with the current price of commodities, the market price needs to be where it is. Jamie is hopeful that the current price spike will allow farmers to make some money over summer.

GOLDEN COUPLE: Kevin and Marie beside the huge spring-fed dam.

WEED CONTROL: A bit of fertilising and weeding is all that the Marriotts do after the harvest season, with Kevin managing problem grasses by burning them off when the bulbs are dormant.

Next door to Kevin, the neighbour had chestnuts. They didn’t harvest the chestnuts, so every year between 300 and 400 cockatoos spent their days gorging themselves on the nuts. When the supply of chestnuts was exhausted by August the cockatoos began to size XS WKH o HOGV RI VDIIURQ The birds followed down the stem of the plant to the bulb and cleaned it out.

Five kids later, the Marriotts were working in Melbourne and looking for a rural block as they had always been country people. One hundred acres became available in Tolmie, and as a family that loved shooting, hunting and motorbike riding, Tolmie ticked all the boxes. It was then that Kevin began researching his retirement plan. Saffron quickly became the crop of choice, as it didn’t require a lot of water, and no water at all over summer. And the Marriotts do have a lot of saffron. Currently they have 200,000 bulbs planted in 45 rows of between 2000 and 6000 plants. These produce up to a kilogram of saffron. In 2018, the Marriotts sold everything they picked, and some from another grower as well. The product has been very well received, especially when people hear it’s grown in Victoria, and locally owned. “It’s also very fresh, said Kevin. This will all become part of the pitch when the Marriotts begin to market their business. Up until now, it’s been farmers markets and local produce stores and restaurants who have been the main customers. The new chapter for Tolmie Gold Saffron is marketing their product on a larger scale. Decades of septic system misery, banished in days. Queensland couple Mike and Rose Maynard talk about their decadeslong battle with septic tank odours and fouling, and the environmentally friendly solution that restored their pride in their home within two weeks.

“Our septic system was put in when we built in 1988, says Mike Maynard from his rural property in sunny Queensland. “Over the years we have had continuing problems with the system not working properly. The area around the trench would get so wet and boggy that we could not even walk near it, let alone use the mower. But that wasn’t the worst bit of their dysfunctional septic system. “The smell would become almost overpowering at times, says Mike, “especially when it rained or when we had visitors to stay, which was quite embarrassing.

The stink that stuck The problem wouldn’t go away, which is common with septic tanks and wastewater treatment systems. “As time went on, the smell was becoming a constant thing,â€? explains Rose. Septic systems are much like a digestive system for your house. Just as you need healthy bacteria in your body, your septic system needs a healthy balance of good bacteria to process the waste from your home. Otherwise, problems occur and recur. “We were at a loss as to what to do to ďŹ x it, apart from getting the septic pumped out again, digging up and replacing the trench, or even replacing the whole system – all expensive options,â€? says Rose. “But then we read in a magazine about Ecocare Activator.â€?

Cleaners don’t cut it Often confused with traditional septic system cleaning products, Ecocare Activator is much more than a cleaner.

Sound advice about odours “My husband rang and spoke at length to George at Insight Environmental about our problem and, based on that conversation and George’s assurances, we decided to try Ecocare Activator, says Rose. “We thought, ‘Really, what do we have to lose,’ as it is only a fraction of the cost of the other options we had. What happened next surprised Mike and Rose, but not George.

Fast forward for the Maynards “We were astounded by the results and how quickly it happened, says Rose with a smile. “Within a couple of weeks the smell was gone and you could see the area around the trench drying – something that had not happened for twenty years or more. That was in the winter of 2013. Today, Mike and Rose still have a healthy, odour-free septic system. “We now have a dry paddock, Mike explains. “We can mow and walk all around the area. “We could not be happier with the results and will continue to use this fabulous product.

It’s an easy-to-use, environmentally friendly, septicsafe solution that activates and conditions your septic system. It gets the ‘digestive system’ healthy again, which, in turn, clears the blockages that cause bad odours and keeps the entire septic system clean.

Guano - a tale of two birds Ű

Kismet’s agronomist, Robert Drewitt discusses the important role guano has played in modern agriculture

IT was the best of times. It was the worst of times. This might have been the thoughts of the guano miners shovelling and bagging guano from caves to load into bags to bring back to Europe to fertilise crops. In 1609, Peruvian guano was first discovered by the western world. However, the Incas had been using guano for centuries with strict rules around protecting the sea birds that nested on the islands. The guano trade began in a commercial form by 1840 when the United States started using guano as its main source of fertiliser. The use of guano created an agricultural boom. United States president at the time Millard Fillmore said in Congress, “The duty of the government is to employ all means properly in its power to assure guano is imported into this country at a reasonable price.

In 1856, the US Government passed the Guano Island Act which allowed any unclaimed islands to be annexed. So began the hunt for guano to feed the world’s crops. Today, over 150 years after the 1856 proclamation the world still demands guano as a source of nutrition for crops and pasture. Today, however, the world is a different place and deposits of guano are not as readily available. Guano has two main types: the fresh guano from bats and birds that contains nitrogen and older guano that has been either coralised, or in the case of inland deposits, formed into sedimentary rock deposits. The older guanos are high in phosphorus and calcium but contain no nitrogen. In respect to Australian agriculture the focus is on the older forms that are imported as a source of fertiliser for

both the organic and nonorganic farming industry. The current imported guanos fall into two main categories - inland, mainly Chinese guano, and coastal or sea bird guano, from South East Asia. Where your Madura Guano GoldŽ comes from is very important from an agronomy viewpoint as it determines both how available the phosphorus in the product is and if the product contains beneficial silica at significant levels. This article is the first of 12 in a series that will give the reader a good understanding of the difference between guanos available on the markets, the real effective cost of the product, plus when you need to use guano. We will also look into phosphorus tie-ups, the Phosphorus Buffing Index, as well as silica’s role as a beneficial element both in the soil and in the plant.

MADURA MINING: John Jashar, owner and director of Kismet International, inspects the huge reserves of guano, that will be mined to create Madura Guano Gold.

POTASSIUM 20% Required for synthesis of proteins and starch. Activates enzymes to stimulate chemical plant processes. Improves crop yields and quality and is essential for fruit formation.

SULPHUR 16%

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Vital for protein and amino acid formation. Promotes enzyme activation. Important for high oil content crops.

MAGNESIUM 7% Enhances Enzyme Formation. Enhances phosphate adsorption. Essential for chlorophyll production and photosynthesis. Key Nutrient in plant uptake of other nutrients alongside Silica.

FEATURES & BENEFITS A natural product free of chemical additives; environmentally friendly. The unique 3 in 1 combination helps maintain nutrient balance particularly where high analysis fertilisers don’t replace magnesium and sulphur lost from soil each year.

24.8% Silica in the form of a mono Silica Acid is taken up by the plant with water uptake and is deposited in the cell walls. This gives the plant a considerable increase in stem strength while providing a mechanical barrier to both fungal infection and water loss. Like Sulphur, Silica has a function in the soil chemistry as well as the plant. Free Silica in the soil will displace Phosphorus that is bound to Iron, liberating plant available Phosphorous while producing an Iron Silicate.

Particularly suited for horticultural crops and dairy pasture as either direct application or in blends to enhance the effectiveness of the other fertilizers and animal nutrition in the cases of dairy pastures where soil tests indicate deficiencies.

90% Citrate Soluble Phosphorus [P]. Fast & slow release of Phosphorus. 12.6% Total P. 11.0% Elemental Sulphur. 26.2% Calcium. 24.8% Silica. 0.4% Zinc. 8.6% Organic Carbon. Suitable for blending with all other types of fertilisers (except urea). Performs very well agronomically. Environmentally friendly. Natural Organic Product. Australian Organic Registered Farm Input 309. No odour guano organic fertiliser.

NATURAL FERTILISER APPLICATIONS

Low magnesium levels means KMS is more suitable to greater range of soil types across Australia. Important to maintain a proper balance between Mg and K in soils and plants. There is a strong antagonistic effect of potassium on plant absorption of magnesium. KMS can readily replace traditional potassium based fertilisers such as MOP with the advantage of reduced chloride levels (50% vs 1.5%). Low Chloride levels helps prevent the build up of salts in soils; beneficial to potatoes and other Chloride sensitive crops. Suitable for blending with a range of other types of fertilisers such as Guano Gold-Kwik Start, AmSul, DAP, MAP, MOP, SOP & other related products.

THE CHICKEN AND THE EGG: Nation-wide research is being conducted into attitudes towards the egg industry.

Scenes such as the one above will now be a thing of the past under the new Victorian e-waste ban to landďŹ ll, which came into affect from July 1, 2019.

Egg industry to take the Taking e-waste to a better place pulse of the nation

AUSTRALIANS are invited to participate in an extensive nation-wide research program aimed at understanding attitudes towards the Australian egg industry. The community research is being run by the CSIRO and will canvass the views of over 5000 randomly selected Australians, as well as anyone from the general public who wants to have their say. The research program is now in its second year and leader of the CSIRO research, Dr Kieren Moffat, said his team wants to build on the o QGLQJV WR DOORZ \HDU to-year comparison and gain a deeper understanding of community attitudes. “Changing consumer atWLWXGHV DUH LQp XHQFLQJ KRZ food is produced and one of the main aims of our research is to help egg farmers

better understand the drivers of this change, said Dr Moffat. “The social science model we’ve developed allows survey participants to consider the impacts and contributions of an industry from multiple angles and that data helps us understand not only what people think, but why they think that way. “We expect the results will provide real and compelling data that will help egg farmers understand the diversity of community attitudes and, ultimately, future proof their businesses. The CSIRO handed the egg industry a mixed report card last year with the community identifying food security and hen welfare as the big ticket items but also saying the industry’s environmental impacts were not clear.

Australian Eggs’ managing director, Rowan McMonnies, said last year’s insights were invaluable for the industry and a large amount of work is already under way as a result. “We found a number of opportunities to progress WKH LVVXHV LGHQWLo HG LQ WKH CSIRO’s research,â€? For example, old mobile phones can be recycled to make stainless steel goods, new batteries and even plastic fence posts. WHY RECYLCE IT? There are many reasons why you should recycle e-waste. Ranging from heavy metals like lead, mercury and cadmium to ozoneGHSOHWLQJ FKORURĂ€XRURFDUERQV &)&6 DQG Ă€DPH retardants. Even in small amounts, these dangerous chemicals can cause environmental contamination. When you multiply it by the millions of e-waste LWHPV EHLQJ OHIW LQ ODQGÂżOOV

the situation becomes much more serious. It’s good to recover and reuse. E-waste also contains a whole range of valuable materials, including tin, nickel, zinc, aluminium, copper, silver, gold and plastic. When you add it all up, we’re throwing away a lot of precious resources. WHERE DO I TAKE IT? While you can’t put your e-waste in your home rubbish or recycling bin, you can take it to one of many different locations around the region to recycle it. Most Councils and Alpine Resorts have specialised facilities where your e-waste recycling can be dropped off.

Horticulture exports rival lamb and dairy THE Australian horticulture sector continues to go from strength to strength, with the value of horticulture exports closing in on Australia’s lamb and dairy sectors. That’s according to the In Focus: Horticulture report released by National Australia Bank (NAB). Analysing data from the Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES), the report reveals the Australian horticultural sector is worth approximately $11.4 billion, with growth in export value a key feature. NAB agribusiness economist, Phin Ziebell, said the growth in horticultural export value was closely OLQNHG WR EHQHo WV p RZLQJ IURP WKH China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA), which entered into force in 2015. “At a value of $3.2 billion, Australian horticulture exports are now comparable to those of lamb and mutton, and dairy, which are valued at $3.6 billion and $3.5 billion respectively, Mr Ziebell said. “Improved market access and lowered tariffs under ChAFTA have had a large impact, particularly on fruit.

New opportunities in Asia have

What is the cost of soil-borne crop disease? AGRICULTURE Victoria is calling on growers and agronomists to contribute to a national project seeking to determine the potential of soil-borne diseases of pulse and oilseed crops. As part of the National Soilborne Disease project being run by Agriculture Victoria in partnership with the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), growers and agronomists are being asked to report crops exhibiting poor thrift so that they can be tested for root disease. Agriculture Victoria research scientist Josh Fanning said some of the soil-borne diseases the project was targeting included rhizoctonia and root lesion nematodes. Rhizoctonia causes crop damage by pruning the plant’s root system, resulting in water and nutrient stress to the plant, while root lesion nematodes (RLN) are microscopic worm-like animals that extract nutrients from plants, also causing yield loss.

ROOT DISEASE: Agriculture Victoria is targeting root diseases in pulse and oilseed crops.

Dr Fanning said an aim of the project was to identify soil-borne diseases unique to pulse and oilseed crops. “In general, we don’t know which soil-borne diseases are causing losses in pulses and oilseeds,” he said.

During the last few years Agriculture Victoria research staff have observed nematode symptoms on the roots of most of the chickpea and lentil crops surveyed. Last season a disease known as phytophthora root

Grassland Society celebrates 60 years MERRIJIG farmer, Matt Mahoney, president of the Grassland Society of Southern Australia, is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the group. The Grassland Society of Southern Australia has come a long way in the 60 years since a small group of farmers banded together in 1959 to help producers get the best out of their land. Now celebrating its 60th anniversary, the society continues to help farmers across three states to create better soils and pastures. During the annual conference this week in Creswick, Gippsland agricultural consultant and GSSA life member John Gallienne outlined the history of the society, which he said continued to support livestock industries. Mr Gallienne, from Warragul, was joined by fellow life members Jeff Hirth and Charles de Fegely at the conference. A member for almost 50 years, Mr Gallienne said the society brought together scientists and farmers. “The society is a place where everyone can exchange information and hear ideas in a practical way that draws together the science and farming communities so both groups EHQHo W y KH VDLG Mr de Fegely, who runs a pasture-based livestock property near Ararat, said the Grassland Society had been the basis of his production. “Over the many years I’ve been involved, it has enabled us to get access to technology and link us to people that have helped to lift our SURGXFWLRQ DQG SURo WDELOLW\ DQG ZH YH EXLOW up a lot of friendships and relationships along WKH ZD\ y KH VDLG Dr Hirth, from Albury, said the society gave IDUPHUV LQIRUPDWLRQ DQG FRQo GHQFH WR LP prove their systems. “Grasslands connects all sections of the IDUPLQJ FRPPXQLW\ y 'U +LUWK VDLG “The fact that so many farmers come forward to share information demonstrates to fellow farmers what you can achieve and that LV YHU\ HQFRXUDJLQJ y

Originally formed as the Grassland Society of Victoria, it aimed to improve knowledge and interest in the production and use of pasture. Over the years more than 1000 speakers have presented at conferences attended by more than 16,000 people, with many more involved in other activities. The GSSA changed its name in 2003-04 to recognise branches operating in Tasmania and South Australia in addition to those based in Victoria. The society has embraced technology through on-farm trials and demonstrations, including the Grassland Productivity Program from 1992 to 2004 which helped to reestablish the role of improved soil fertility as a driver of productivity. It has also been involved in several on-farm research projects. The GSSA now has about 580 members, about two-thirds are farmers who are joined by agribusiness consultants and scientists.

Saleyard figures up Cattle throughput, value rises in 2018-19 despite shadow of drought

By STEVE KELLY WANGARATTA Livestock Exchange cattle numbers have risen despite the drought that’s impacted the nation’s agricultural and horticultural sectors. It’s roughly a year on since a company board of directors took over the running of the Wangaratta Saleyards from council, and board chair John Muraca reports that they’ve managed to stop the likely scenario of the facility closing if the move wasn’t made. Commitment to high quality, performanceorientated cattle ALPINE Angus will hold its annual Spring Bull Sale on Wednesday, September 11 on-farm at its Rosewhite bullselling complex. A total of 40 performance recorded Herd Book Register and Angus Performance Register bulls will be offered. All are backed by Alpine’s commitment to producing high quality, performanceorientated cattle bred with D VSHFLo F IRFXV RQ ELUWK WR growth spread while maintaining and improving the basic fundamentals of structure, type and temperament. Alpine’s breeding strategy focuses on developing the quality of the Alpine cow herd with breeding objectives designed to ensure structural integrity and true Angus type are maintained. Alpine have a rigorous process to ensure only sound females with constitution are used. In addition the Alpine herd is run under challenging conditions to ensure increased selection pressure on the Alpine herd’s natural fertility levels and ability to breed back under challenging conditions. Alpine selects sires that combine responsible maturity patterns with leading growth - the aim being to produce easy calving cattle that grow quickly with excellent carcase performance. We are fortunate to also have a number of high quality bulls backing up our ET and AI program. 7KH DUWLo FLDO EUHHGLQJ SUR gram uses leading sires from the Coonamble herd in Western Australia, as well as some of the USA’s highest performing Angus sires. 6LJQLo FDQW WLPH DQG HQHUJ\ is spent sourcing sires to ensure they continue to develop the herd in more ways than

Investment excels at producing light born calves with explosive performance, big eye muscle area and good fat cover. He combines a well below average birth weight EBV of 3.6 with growth and carcase weight EBVs entrenched in the top one per cent of the breed and eye muscle area and high fat EBVs sitting in the top 10 per cent. His dam has produced at least three leading AI sires for the Sitz herd. His progeny have excelled in the USA, highlighted by the December 2016 annual Sitz sale where he produced the four highest priced bulls from 420 sold. There will also be available sons from three of Alpineowned recognised sires. Alpine-owned Sterita Park Black Jack produced the grand champion carcase at last year’s Royal Melbourne Show. Coonamble Junior is a higher intra-muscular fat bull that has consistently produced quality, high growth bulls in past sales. And Hazeldean High Roller

is one of the highest docility bulls in the breed and the producer of some of Alpine’s truest-to-type females. Alpine Angus enjoys exceptional support throughout the North East and Central Victoria, Upper Murray regions, the High Country and East Gippsland. Ideally positioned to access these areas, Alpine Angus also provides free delivery to all of Victoria and Southern NSW. The 2019 Autumn Bull Sale also saw bulls being delivered to the Western District, SA, NSW and Tasmania. Service is a key focus at Alpine Angus, with all bulls independently structurally assessed, semen and fertility tested, vaccinated for pestivirus, vibriosis and 7 in 1 and tested PI free. Alpine Angus aims to give prompt service and support should problems arise and are always more than willing to help achieve a quick solution to problems. All sale bulls will be on display from 10am at the Alpine Sales Complex, 1138 Happy Valley Road, Rosewhite, on sale day, Wednesday, September 11. The project is one of 13 on-farm research, development and adoption (RD&A) projects from the 2018-19 annual call to receive Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) funding, instigated through MLA’s RD&A regional consultation process. The process enables grassfed beef and sheepmeat producers to have input into the direction of RD&A funding most relevant to them. The project will aim to increase the ‘wet-and-pregnant early’ (WAPE) status of heifers joined in temperate production systems by at least 10 per cent relative to current on-farm levels. Researchers will work with producer groups, commercial beef producers and their advisors to develop up-to-date, regionally relevant and practical management recommendations across a region comprising more than two million breeding cows. University of Adelaide scientist, Dr Stephen Lee, said the project will provide clear management recommendations for producers to increase productivity without increasing risk or management complexity. “By collecting detailed animal performance and feed records from autumn and late winter/spring calving systems across southern Australia, we will develop a better understanding of the optimum growth

A NEW website is now providing independent, expert advice on integrated pest and disease management (IPDM) to the apple and pear industries and service providers. Agriculture Victoria and Hort Innovation developed this website in response to an increased interest and need for these industries to reduce chemical use to maintain access to markets and to avoid insects developing chemical resistance. Agriculture Victoria principal research scientist David Williams said IPDM is a tool that promotes monitoring for pests and diseases, and sets thresholds for control management. “IPDM can mean using natural predator insects and orchard man-

It is imperative that the pregnant mare is well fed. The nutritional requirements of the mare will increase by 20-30% during the last 3 months of pregnancy. As the mare approaches the end of her pregnancy she should be in good body condition, but not too fat - the over weight mare may have trouble foaling and may lose condition after foaling, which may stop her coming into season after foaling. Abor tion in late pregnancy is also a concern. There is a wide range of causes for abor tion in the mare, but in general, older mares tend to have a higher incidence of abor tion. Various bacteria can cause an endometritis leading to abor tion. Apar t from bacterial endometritis other causes of abor tion include, viral or fungal infection, and twinning. The most common viral agent causing abor tion in mares is

equine herpes virus I, which generally causes abor tion in the last trimester of pregnancy. Some mares will show signs of abor tion before it occurs, such as dripping milk prematurely or having a vulval discharge. Other mares may abor t without any warning. If your mare does show any abnormal sign during her pregnancy, you should consult your veterinarian. As the foaling date approaches, it is impor tant to check and see if a Caslick’s operation has been performed on your mare. The Caslick’s operation involves suturing the top of the mare’s vulval lips together to minimise the risk of uterine infection. If the operation has been performed, the vulva will need to be cut open prior to foaling.

Another consideration, is the mare’s vaccination history. It is advisable to have the mare vaccinated for tetanus and strangles, about a month prior to foaling. If you intend to send your mare to stud this is also impor tant. Most studs insist on pre-vaccination with tetanus & strangles; while some others will also insist on equine herpes virus 4,1 vaccination. If all this is followed the pregnancy should proceed without complication. If in doubt, at any stage, during the mare’s pregnancy it is advisable to contact your veterinarian. Warby Street Vet. Hospital is on call 24 hours a day for any enquires/emergencies – Ph: 03 5721 7177 t/12d12235-v68/3219
