THE Binnie family has been farming out of Bungeet in North East Victoria for 100 years, and as Wallace Binnie watches the clock tick over to 73 years of age, he is thankful that his daughter Kirsty Taylor will be the fourth generation to take up the sheep.

Though they are now in the early stages of a succession plan, Mrs Taylor never envisioned taking up her dad’s lead. “I grew up around the sheep and always helped out, droving them and going around to the shows,� said Mrs Taylor.

Mrs Taylor left the family farm in her twenties and moved to Western Australia for over a decade, where her husband is in mining.

But since returning nine years ago, her zest for farming has blossomed.

THE Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) recently published its Agricultural Census data from the 2015-16 financial year.

The data collected in the census relates to a broad range of agricultural businesses, from beef cattle production to broadacre farming and vineyards.

The stats revealed that there are currently 85,681 agricultural businesses in operation in Australia.

The gross value of Australian agriculture increased by $3.1 billion to $56 billion in 2015-16, with all states except Northern Territory showing an increase in total sector value.

Nationally, the gross value of livestock slaughterings and other disposals increased by $1.9 billion to $20.6 billion in 2015-16.

The gross value of crop production also increased (up five per cent) from $26.0 billion in 201415 to $27.3 billion in 2015-16.

The gross value of cattle and calves in Australia has increased by 13pc to $13.1 million in 2015-16, largely driven by higher slaughter returns.

These increases are offset by a 3pc decrease to $15.4 billion for total broadacre crops, reflecting poor cropping conditions prevailing during 2015-16 in southern Australia in particular.

Total size of beef, dairy and sheep herds were down across the board in comparison to 2014-15, driven by dry conditions early in the season that saw many people shed stock, especially in the southern states.

The average size of beef, dairy and sheep herds for the year were 805, 412 and 2857 respectively.

The top three crop types in terms of gross product were wheat ($6.2 billion), fruit, nuts and grapes ($5.6 billion) and vegetables ($3.6 billion).

Average farm size reached 4331ha, which is up 0.3pc since 2014-15.

Australian farming businesses used an average of 107 megalitres of water.

you right now, I’ve never seen the biggest sheep unsold, only the smallest ones.

“They can be harder to sheer, but when they are shorn, it’s impressive.”

But the balancing act between a big rangy sheep and one that puts meat on is a careful craft, and he believes the Poll Dorset has the goods all round.

“Obviously, we don’t just want great big sheep that can’t put meat on.

“But, I believe the Poll Dorset breed has the advantage of being able to turn off prime lambs all the way from 16kg all the way up to 33kg, with a fat score of three or four.

“People are starting to take up shedding sheep, which are good, but they only grow to a certain size, and they have no skin value.

“Poll Dorset can be turned off at any stage.

“And they can breed all year.”

And although he is starting to take those first steps back from the farm, he won’t be turning his back on the sheep game anytime soon.

“I guess we would be about ready to disperse our stud about now and I would be living miserably in town somewhere, worried about my neighbours,” said Mr Binnie with a laugh.

“But with Kirsty taking up interest, I can still keep on with it a bit.”

His wife Sue, who has been by his side for 50 years, is look-

ing forward to getting some more of his time, “I do want more of his time now, away from the sheep,” she said.

“But it hasn’t been happening yet.”

Mrs Binnie was a town girl from Wangaratta when they met, and knew nothing about farming.

“We met at a dance in Wangaratta on May 8, 1965,” she said.

Though Mr Binnie remembers it differently.

“The truth is, we actually first met before that, at a dance in Moyhu – but she was with another bloke,” he said.

“So, I had to bide my time.”

The couple now look on eagerly, not just at their daughter Kirsty, but further on to the fifth generation in Kirsty’s daughter Imogen, who at the age of 14 is already showing strong interests in the family business.

“She’s already my right-hand girl,” said Mrs Taylor.

“I think she will do so well at it,” her grandfather agreed.

“You have to have that passion for it, and she does.”

And as he gets ready to hand it all over, Mr Binnie couldn’t be more positive about the sheep farming future in Australia.

“Things are looking really great,” he said.

“We had a wonderful lambing this year.

“We joined about 450 ewes, and tagged 670 lambs from them.”

“Growing up here, I never wanted to marry a farmer or live on the farm,” said Mrs Taylor.

“But now that I’m older and have a family of my own, that’s exactly where my interests lay.”

Coledale farm is a 1000 acre Poll Dorset sheep stud located between Benalla and Yarrawonga.

The stud was originally started by Wally’s father, Alec, when he bought some Poll Dorset ewes in October of 1969.

“We used to buy rams in Shepparton,” recalled Mr Binnie.

“And one year there was a line of Poll Dorset ewes for sale.

“On a whim, we bought them to breed our own lambs and that’s how it all started.”

The family had been running fat lambs for years, but the spurof-the-moment decision sent the family into a direction that has decided its fate ever since.

“We started getting more rams than we needed on our own farm, so we sold them to other farmers.

“Then we started thinking that a few of our sheep looked pretty good, so we’d take them to the shows, and it went on from there.”

Soon, Mr Binnie was bitten by the genetics bug and began working hard improving his sheep – and it is an obsession that still drives him to this day.

“The genetics is where the real challenge lies,” he said.

“Some farmers try and grow a better crop each year, but I find it more satisfying to produce a living animal according to my genetic choices.

“I love it.”

His daughter Kirsty can also see the spark in her dad’s eye when the topic of genetics comes to the table.

“It’s like the thrill of a gambler,” she said.

“Maybe the next ram will be the one.

“We’re always looking for that perfect specimen.”

And the kind of specimen that Mr Binnie likes is a big one.

“I always hear people say that big sheep aren’t any good and you can’t sell them – I can tell

Forum to curb wild deer impact

By JUSTIN JENVEY HARRIETVILLE residents want to tackle the impact of deer in and around the town.

The Harrietville Community Forum has initiated the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Living with deer in Harrietvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; project to set about minimising the impacts of the alpine regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wild herd.

The group presented a session to the Harrietville community led by deer expert Dave Forsyth.

It also engaged Game Management Authority, VicRoads and Sporting Shootersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Association of Australia representatives.

Harrietville Community Forum chair John Atkins said the community delivered feedback, through an online survey, prior to the session. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Over the past 5-10 years the number of deer observed in and around Harrietville has increased and many community members are now seeing impacts on their livelihood, their gardens and the local environment,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The number of deer along the Great Alpine Road is also a concern with an increase in the potential for a serious accident to occur. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Harrietville Community Forum raised these concerns with Parks Victoria and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and as a result the project initiated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The aim of last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s session was to try and give the community general information about deer but also give some indication about how we can manage the problem and where deer numbers might be headed in the future.â&#x20AC;?

The Combined Firearms Council of Victoria has written to Premier Daniel Andrews urging him to reconsider the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s position in light of shootersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; concerns.

Mr Paterson said the ban on self-loading rifles occurred after the shootings in Port Arthur in 1996, in a state which had very few controls over firearms when other states already had effective licensing and limitations.

A NEW Federal Government trial offers a range of incentives for the unemployed to undertake seasonal horticultural work, helping gain experience and improve skills.

The Seasonal Work Incentives Trial offers financial incentives to support unemployed people to take up work opportunities for up to six weeks.

Participants will be able to earn up to $5000 each year from qualifying seasonal horticultural work without it being assessed under the social security income test.

They may also be eligible for a seasonal work living away and travel allowance of up to $300 each year, if they undertake qualifying seasonal horticultural work more than 120 kilometres from their home.

The trial incentives are available to eligible Newstart and Youth Allowance (other) recipients who have been receiving those payments continuously for at least three months and are participating in Jobactive, transition to work or disability employment services.

Farm chemical, wild rabbits and antimicrobials VICTORIAN farm chemical users are set to benefit from reduced government red tape regarding requirements for agricultural and veterinary chemical use.

The Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (Control of Use) Regulations 2017 came into effect on July 23.

The regulations have been updated to ensure they remained the most effective means of regulating agricultural and veterinary chemical use in Victoria.

Farm chemical users should note the following changes: simpler and more flexible record keeping requirements for farm chemical users; amended product labelling and advice notes requirements for veterinary practitioners and stockfeed manufacturers; clearer notification responsibilities for aircraft or mister spraying near sensitive services; additional aerial spraying equipment options for pilots; recognition of permits issued by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) to use ‘restricted use’ chemicals not in accordance with the product label (off-label), which will reduce duplication in government processes, and introduction of a new offence regarding the possession of certain high risk unregistered chemicals. ethyl; parathion; parathion-ethyl; parathion-methyl; or strychnine.

A 2017 grants program for communities to take action on wild rabbits has been released by the Victorian Rabbit Action Network (VRAN).

The grants will arm communities with integrated rabbit management programs throughout spring and summer.

Local community groups can apply for grants of between $2000 and $5000 as part of the 2017 Community Action Grant round, with $41,000 allocated to support important community activities.

Community support to manage rabbits is high, with more than 150 members throughout Victoria already volunteering to participate in the release of the new K5 virus.

Agriculture Victoria Biosecurity Manager Established Invasive Animals John Matthews said he was pleased to see VRAN investing in these community grants to complement the virus.

He said communities could not rely on the virus alone to reduce rabbits and that best practice rabbit management principles were also required.

The last rabbit biological control virus was released 20 years ago.

AGRICULTURE Victoria raised awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) at the recent Australian Veterinary Association Annual Conference in Melbourne.

The exhibition showcased the department’s important work in the fields of animal health, biosecurity and welfare.

Victoria’s Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Charles Milne said AMR was a major global public health problem that occurs when bacteria were no longer sensitive to previously effective antibiotics.

AMR can result in antibiotics becoming ineffective, with serious consequences to human and animal health, which can include death from previously treatable infections.

The reduction and appropriate use of antimicrobials are essential for fighting antimicrobial resistance.

How long have you farmed at Eurobin?

For 30 years.

What crops do you produce?

For 25 years we grew only chestnuts, but now we produce mainly speciality citrus, Japanese yuzu, bergamot and chinotti.

Where are the markets for this produce?

For the citrus, initially, it has been the domestic market – mainly direct to restaurants, but we hope to export in the future.

We currently export processed chestnuts to Japan.

What do you do for the Chestnuts Association Incorporated and how much time does that involve?

I have been involved with Chestnuts Australia for 25 years and am currently the president.

It does require some commitment and at times it can be quite demanding, but it is all for a good cause and I have made some great friendships along the way.

Can you tell readers the easiest way to remove the skin from a chestnut?

If it is a good peeler, put a small cut in the shell and inner skin and roast over a flame or under a hot grill for 10-15 minutes, depending on the size.

Another way is to remove the leathery outer shell leaving the inner skin on.

Blanch in rapidly boiling water for about one minute, keep the blanched nuts in

hot water and then remove the inner skin with a small knife.

When peeled place in cold water immediately and use within 24 hours or freeze for up to two years.

What do you do in the community?

I’m a Country Fire Authority volunteer and third lieutenant Ovens-Eurobin brigade.

It’s a great bush brigade with mainly farmer-members and strong community support. It’s how the CFA should be and hopefully remains.

What do you love about living in Eurobin?

It’s simply peaceful and beautiful.

We are on the Ovens River and have views of the alps, so working in my orchard is a pleasure – most of the time.

If you could change something what would that be?

Myrtleford is a farming town and I hope it stays that way.

We have a perfect environment to grow many crops so I would like to see this area become the ‘Provence’ of Australia – famous for its beautiful produce.

A farmer, a fence and a show cause notice

FENCE FURORE: An aggrieved Violet Town beef and sheep farmer could face legal action from Strathbogie Shire for removing trees on his property line.

A VIOLET Town farmer has been threatened with legal action by his local council after removing trees along his fence line.

Farmer Ken Sloan, whose property is surrounded by six kilometres of roads, was replacing part of his fence line that had fallen into disrepair when he cut back the trees on his property line.

Mr Sloan is now engaged in a legal battle with Strathbogie Shire which could end up in court.

The Victorian Farmers Federation is now calling on gov-

ernment to reduce “green tape” and change the laws to make them more sensible for farmers and the environment.

ABC Rural first reported the story last week.

Mr Sloan “spoke to the council about removing the trees leaning across the fence and the tree limbs overhanging the fence”, according to the ABC’s report.

“Mr Sloan believes he had approval from council workers to do so, but now that approval has been reversed because he has been told he has broken environmental laws by killing

trees — a claim he has denied.”

“The council has issued Mr Sloan with a ‘show cause’ letter demanding he explain why he should not be prosecuted for damaging native vegetation.”

Mr Sloan told the ABC he was devastated at the potential of litigation.

“I don’t sleep; I can’t sleep,” he said.

“They can’t tell us what we’ve done wrong apart from we’re removing trees.”

The saga could be a cautionary tale for those looking to clear away their fence line in Mansfield.

MANSFIELD Rudolph Steiner School has received a $1000 grant to purchase beekeeping equipment.

The grant, which has been sent via Landcare, is one of 245 across Victoria, and is promoting hands-on projects that teach students about environmental sustainability.

FLEECED: After almost 20 years of declining shorn wool production, the 2015/16 financial year appears to have marked the turning point.

Wool prices rise to new heights WOOL prices have risen to highs not seen in Australia in decades due to growing export demand and limited supply, according to Rural Bank’s 2017 Australian Wool Annual Review.

Stronger demand from processors and reduced supply saw the Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) rise by 10 per cent to 1507 cents/kg in the first half of 2017, while the 17 micron price guide rose 45 per cent over the past 12 months.

Wool prices are expected to remain strong in 2017/18, particularly for fine to medium wool categories, supported by growing export demand and limited, albeit now growing, supply from Australia.

The new report, launched

by specialist insights team Ag Answers, provides producers and industry with a concise analysis of the Australian and global wool sector.

The report also revealed reduced wool exports from major producers such as New Zealand, which will see Australian wool growers well positioned to enjoy the rare conditions of increasing production levels and higher prices.

After almost 20 years of declining shorn wool production, the 2015/16 financial year appears to have marked the turning point, with shorn wool production expected to reach 341,000 tonnes of greasy wool in 2016/17, an increase of five per cent when compared to the previous year.

Andrew Smith, general manager Agribusiness for Rural Bank, said increased wool production was largely driven by the expanding national flock, set to rise by four per cent to 76.6 million head by June 2018.

“All states, except for Tasmania, experienced higher p r o d u c t i o n l eve l s , w i t h favourable seasonal conditions boosting fleece weights for producers in the northern regions and Western Australia.

“Wool growers are very keen to hold sheep – particularly wethers, with some producers experiencing gains in wool production per head due to shearing on a more frequent basis.”

A poor July to September rainfall outlook for southern Australia - following the dry autumn – along with a 20-year low cow and heifer slaughter rate and continued volatile global market activity have resulted in a market projection that is weaker than first thought.

The slowly building national cattle herd indicates the peak of the cattle price is likely now behind producers, and downward pressure will continue to slowly mount for the foreseeable future.

Despite this, Australian cattle prices are unlikely to drop back to pre-2013 levels, buoyed by some lingering re-stocker activity when pasture conditions eventually improve.

Interestingly, June 2017 marked a crossroads for the Australian beef industry.

Eastern states’ slaughter consistently tracked higher than year-ago levels for the first time in three years, while at the same time, cattle prices dropped below year-ago levels, also for the first time in three years.

These trends are likely to remain in place for the remainder of 2017, and have a significant impact on price and production expectations.

More specifically, cattle on feed remain at record high levels, with numbers across Australia in the March quarter

in excess of one million head.

Contributing to the record high is a slower than usual turnoff rate - cattle being retained on feed for longer.

During the March quarter, the proportion of cattle marketed relative to the number on feed was 69 per cent, compared to the quarterly average of 75 per cent over the past three years.

This is a continuation of a trend that began in 2016, and is one that is likely to hold for the second half of 2017, and into 2018.

This should result in relatively strong feeder cattle buyer activity and reasonably high average carcase weights, even when female cattle slaughter is anticipated to return to more typical levels in 2018.

Slaughter numbers continue to confirm that re-stocking seems to be producers’ main goal for the coming year.

Australian female cattle slaughter for the year-to-April highlights not only the intent many producers have to replenish depleted herds, but also just how few cows and heifers exist nationally in the wake of several years of drought liquidation.

After four months of 2017, female cattle slaughter was just 973,000 head – the lowest since 1995 and representing 45 per cent of the overall adult kill, three percentage points below the 10-year average (48 per cent).

Despite pasture conditions deteriorating in some regions, and the poor rainfall outlook,

expectations are for the female component of the cattle kill to remain below the 10-year average, simply due to limited availability and already relatively low stocking rates.

The adult cattle kill was 13 per cent below 2016 levels, at 2.16 million head, after the first four months of the year (lowest since 1995).

However, numbers processed across the eastern states recovered in June and are anticipated to remain above yearago levels for the rest of 2017.

A significant consequence of the low female cattle slaughter, combined with high numbers of cattle on feed, is that average carcase weights for the yearto-date were 296.3kg/head – a staggering 7.8kg (3 per cent) increase on the previous record set in 2012.

While low female cattle slaughter was a similarity between the two periods, pasture conditions were considerably better in 2012.

This meant that in 2012, the bulk of the weight was underpinned by heavy grass-fed cattle, as opposed to a greater proportion of grain finished beef this time.

Carcase weights are anticipated to reduce slightly as the year progresses, but stay above the long-term average for the remainder of 2017.

As a result of the increase in cattle slaughter, combined with heavier carcase weights, 2017 beef and veal production is now estimated to be 2.17 million tonnes cwt, up 2 per cent year-on-year.

ON Wednesday, September 20 Alpine Angus is offering 45 registered Angus bulls at their sale complex at 1138 Happy Valley Road, Rosewhite.

The bulls comprise a combination of Welcome Swallow and Alpine Angus genetics and are targeted towards producing low birth, easy care, and high growth cattle, with a large percentage of the offering suitable for use over heifers.

“They are sired by leading USA and Australian bulls, selected for their proven ability to pass on the above mentioned traits,” said Alpine Angus manager Chris Oswin.

The bulls on offer are bred from a cow herd that has undergone rigorous selection pressure for maternal attributes, temperament, structure and type.

The Alpine Angus herd is rated J BAS 8 on the new farm biosecurity program.

tested, independently structurally assessed, PI tested and vaccinated for leptospirosis, vibriosis and pestivirus.

THE Euroa Saleyards was official re-opened last month, after the Minister for Regional Development Jaala Pulford unveiled the completed stage two of the saleyards redevelopment project.

The Euroa Saleyards is a major cattle-selling centre for the region, with each of the 14 annual sale days generating up to $2 million in sales.

Hay business always ahead of the competition FROM food for tables to food for stables, the Dieckmann family has grown it all.

Since the 1890s, the Dieckmann family has farmed their land at Kalbar in the Scenic Rim region of South East Queensland.

Originally running dairy cattle before turning for many years to vegetable crops, the 200 acre farm has been producing lucerne hay – and using iconic red Case IH equipment - for as many years as current owner Trevor Dieckmann can remember.

“It’s always been hay since I was a kid in the early 60s; I remember driving the big red tractor and baling hay at night,” Mr Dieckmann said.

“Although this used to be a big area for vegetable growing; at one time the region produced one third of Queensland’s potato crop and had dedicated ‘potato trains’ that were so full they had to back out of the station first to build up speed to get out of Kalbar.”

The importance of feeding cattle roughage during the winter months

why feed roughage.

Roughage is the bulky feeds that are mostly considered to be high in fibre and low in energy.

Roughage is needed to be fed to your livestock this winter for a number of reasons.

Even though some roughage may

be left uneaten, for digestive function livestock require a minimum amount of fibre and long roughage to maintain their digestive systems, this is sometimes known as the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;scratch factorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and stimulates rumination (cud chewing).

400 delegates show up for Best Wool Best Lamb conference RECORD crowds reflected the value of the recent Best Wool Best Lamb conference, held in Bendigo late last month.

One of the keynote speakers was wool analyst Chris Wilcox, from Poimena Analysis, who took growers through the current wool market prices and the reasons for what was being paid.

Mr Wilcox said strong demand for superfine wool had largely been hidden by increased production over the past decade.

“I believe there is strong demand for superfine wool yet that has not been reflected in prices until just recently,” he said.

He warned that certain importers in China were chasing wool from sheep that had not been mulesed.

“When you talk to the mills in China, they want non-mulesed wool,” Mr Wilcox said.

“They don’t know anything about pain relief (used at mulesing).”

Mr Wilcox said about nine per cent of the Australian clip

now came from non-mulesed sheep, but this was not enough to supply the demand from China.

“Chinese mills are turning to Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa to source their needs of non-mulesed wool,” he said.

Some 400 delegates attended the annual Best Wool Best Lamb event, where 15 speakers and delegates were able to inform producers about the future of the sheep industry, and how best to maximise profits and production.

HOUND HELP: The team from Delatite Veterinary Services held a free information session for hound owners recently, covering the basics of what to do when you are out and your dog becomes injured.

There are 3500 members of the Victorian Hound Hunters Association, and thousands more who hunt without affiliation.

Sometimes, animals become sick or sustain injuries – and are often

hours away from the closest veterinary clinic.

This was exactly the kind of situation covered by Dr Jesse Metcalfe at the Delatite Vets information session.

One of the topics covered was learning how to identify early signs of heat stroke in dogs - and what can be done to help treat it when you are out in the bush.

Heat stroke can be life threatening to dogs, so

the topics covered were of particular interest, as was the information provided on wound management and how to care for injured dogs.

“It was great to see so many clients eager to learn more about the health of their dogs,” Dr Metcalfe said.

Delatite Vet Services will be delivering other talks in the future, such as dealing with snakebite as the weather warms up.

ON TRAC: Chris Wiesner has recently opened his second shop, this time in Albury.

Wiesner open up in Albury AFTER 43 years in the industry, CJ & LH Wiesner is opening another branch after a long success in Walla Walla.

“In September last year we decided we should have a presence in Wodonga,” said operations manager Allan Turner.

It didn’t take long for that vision to come to fruition, with Wiesner Wodonga holding a grand opening last month.

“It went very well,” said Mr Turner.

“We had the presence of a new tractor release on display, which is a significant piece of machinery worldwide.”

The tractor on display was from the impressive Fendt 1000

series of tractors, sporting 517 horsepower.

“It is huge,” said Mr Turner.

Like owner Chris Weiser, Mr Turner has a mechanical background, which obviously serves them well helping to understand their clients’ needs.

“We invited our major suppliers and had Cr Danny Lowe from the Wodonga City Council.

“It was well attended – we had a huge response from existing and new clients.

“And we already have a large range of stock across the range.

“We cover all the way from the ride-on-mower to the largest

sprayer.”

Wiesners’ said their aim is to establish long term business relationships with rural based enterprises in the region, providing superior service and support through experienced and a well-equipped team of people.

LAST month, chief executive officer of the Australian Wagyu Association Graham Truscott retired said goodbye to the Wagyu industry after steering the breed through a period of extraordinary growth.

Rat bait toxicity can be very common amongst farm dogs and cats as baiting is a simple and effective method of controlling vermin on properties.
