Friends, family and other community supporters held an ‘open shear’ at Delatite Station where 12 shearers and four rouse-abouts donated their salaries for the day’s work to Mr Lockhart to assist him as he faces a long rehabilitation journey. The open shear also provided a good opportunity for locals to see a historic shearing shed in action, with a full team of shearers, rouse-abouts and wool pressers. The team processed about 950 sheep for the day. Continued page 4

JUNIOR JUDGE: The Australian Sheep Breeders’ Association will once again be highlighting the youth sections of the 139th Australian Sheep & Wool Show in Bendigo. The junior judging and schools competition provides a showcase for the best and brightest young farmers who are working toward a future in farming. See pages 11 to 14 for special feature.
THE farming communities of Mansfield and Benalla have come together and raised about $10,000 to support Lima South farmer and shearer Will Lockhart, who at only 39 years of age suffered a stroke earlier this year, leaving him currently unable to work. The well-known and loved shearer, who farms 193 acres at Lima South running about 300 Border Leicester Merino cross sheep and 18 Hereford cows with a Simmental bull used for vealer calves, has always worked and lived in the area and before he took on contract shearing spent nine years working as a farmhand at Delatite Station – the location of where the fundraiser was held.
