COLIN Reid runs about 50 head of Blonde d’Aquitaine cattle at his stud in Glenrowan, which goes by the name El’Shamah (Hebrew for The Lord is there).

The name represents Mr Reid’s Christian devotion, which is about the only thing that takes hierarchy over his Border Collie dogs.

“You could say they have been there during hard times in my life and filled a void,” Mr Reid admits.

“They are not the be-all and end-all but they do play a large part in my life, as my

wife will tell you.”

His wife Sue Reid can indeed attest to that.

“I occasionally get jealous of the dogs because they get so much attention,” she laughs.

“That’s why we can’t have a house dog.

“If we had a dog inside it would get all the attention in here as well.”

Ironically, it was the dogs that brought the two together. “We met at a dog trial after both of us had been alone for a long time,â€? says Mrs Reid. “It was love at ďŹ rst sight.â€?

She had her own land in Tolmie at the time and had just started dog trials.

Upon meeting, the pair hit it off and have been inseparable since.

Within three months they were hitched and had bought their own property in Glenrowan, where they still live today.

But Mrs Reid learned quickly that she’d sometimes have to play second ďŹ ddle to her man’s dogs.

An early warning came via Mr Reid’s 21-year-old son. “The ďŹ rst time I met him, he told me his dad had a problem and that from now on it was my job to make sure he didn’t keep too many dogs,â€? she says. “So, I’ve been working on that for 15 years and I don’t think I’ve been very successful.â€?

Mr Reid is honest enough to admit he spends many of his waking hours with his dogs. “I treat them as my mates,� he says. “I spend time with them all.�

Though he’s all about the dogs now, it wasn’t until later in life Mr Reid found his favourite pasttime.

Born on a dairy farm in

Timboon, his family moved to Gippsland in the early 1960s to be closer to Melbourne for school and work. “In those days we only had to milk 50 cows to make a living,� Mr Reid remembers of his family of seven children.

Though all he wanted to do was farm, his father convinced him to take up a trade like his brothers.

So, he left the farm to complete his plumbing apprenticeship.

But as soon as he had his ticket in hand, he was straight back to the farm, working with his old man.

He moved through a couple of leasing farms and in 1989 bought his own dairy farm in Yarroweyah, near Cobram.

And when a man buys his own farm, he needs his own dog.

So along came his ďŹ rst Border Collie, Ben. “That’s where the dogs all started,â€? says Mr Reid. “Ben was my ďŹ rst and he was an extraordinary dog.â€?

He didn’t know much about working dogs, but thankfully Ben didn’t need much training, in-fact Mr Reid was the one who got the education. “He taught me a lot,� he says. “He was unbelievable. “I used to get up in the morning to get the cows in and I’d just call out, and he’d know

where they were.�

By the time he’d ďŹ nished his morning cuppa, Ben would have them all in the yard. “He never left a single one behind.â€?

Mr Reid recalls when he and his dog would walk 100odd cattle all the way from his property in Yarroweyah to the other side of Finley in NSW when Ben was only eight months old. “I used to lease a 600 acre paddock and would stand at the front gate and whistle him and he’d just go and muster the

Working dogs facing legal trials

By JARRAH LOH LATE last year Agricultural Minister Jaala Pulford put forth proposed reforms to the Domestic Animal Act. Most breeders supported a campaign to clamp down on dubious puppy farms, but the reforms turned out a lot stricter than expected.

If the legislation passes, any person planning to let their dog have a litter of pups will have to register as a domestic animal business.

Although greyhound and hunting hound breeders were made exempt, working dog breeders weren’t given the same grace.

Joe Spicer, the Victorian spokesperson for the

Australian Federation of Livestock Working Dogs was one that pushed for an enquiry into the bill. “This was obviously not properly thought out,� he says. “It would put most, if not all, working dog breeders out of business.�

There was a parliamentary enquiry undertaken due to the huge backlash.

The enquiry found that: the Bill was inadequate as a whole; the overall cost for councils, and thus, ratepayers, would be very significant; and that the government withdraw the current Bill and immediately establish a stakeholder group of industry, municipal and community representatives

to consult on the drafting of a new Bill. “They basically want everyone to get their new dog from a shelter, which isn’t viable when looking for a working dog,� says Mr Spicer. “Genetics plays the largest part in a dog’s ability and behaviour.�

He says working dog breeders do not do it for the meagre financial gain, and strict limits will see the end of quality farm dogs.

Further, he suggests that in the long term it could have the opposite intended effect, as only larger breeders will be able to afford the extra costs, pushing smaller breeders underground and creating an illegal market.

An old chap lived down the road and it was he that provided the introduction to dog trials. “One day he told me he was off to the Benalla trials, so I thought I might as well tag along to see what it was all about.�

Much to the amazement of his old neighbour, Mr Reid sat and watched every single dog.

“That’s when the bug bit me,� he says.

His neighbour taught him some dog basics, and Mr Reid took some courses and eventually picked it up along the way. “And I’ve had too many dogs ever since.�

Now Mr Reid is president of that same Benalla Working Sheep Dog Club and Mrs Reid is the secretary.

But it’s not just three-sheep trials that Mr Reid loves about the dogs – he also has an afďŹ nity for breeding. “It doesn’t matter if it’s dogs

or cattle or anything – I am really interested in genes and the breeding lines.�

Mr Reid rears most of his dogs for trial and farm work, but has found they often ďŹ nd themselves favourable homes elsewhere. “There’s a chap down at Broadford that found they’re good at bomb detection.â€?

The couple have also seen their dogs go to dementia patients and the wheelchair bound needing a companion – they even had one that went away and learned to detect early symptoms of hypoglycaemia in its diabetic owner. “It’s not hard to train a Border Collie,� says Mr Reid. “They are very quick.�

The Reids also spend plenty of time on the road, trialling the dogs and judging competitions themselves.

But Mr Reid wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s a great hobby and keeps me busy and gets us away to meet lots of lovely people.�

Though she may have to compete with the dogs for her husband’s affection at times, Mrs Reid echoes his sentiments. “It’s a wonderful way of life,� she says. “It’s an absolute passion for him and I think he’d be lost without it. “Apart from his faith, it is what makes him tick.�

Armstrong believes the hardest work has already been done.

“We probably won’t ever be completely rid of them, but now that we have the numbers so low, it is more a question of maintenance as to not let it slip away again,” he said.

The state government has acknowledged the group’s efforts and included it in its Victorian Landcare Grants Scheme that awarded $221,000 for environmental action throughout the North East.

The Rabbit Roundtable project received $10,000 from the grant, which will go towards ongoing management of the system.

“A lot of the money will be put towards excavator work,” says Mr Armstrong.

“We have found that if the rabbits are destroyed but the warrens remain, they re-establish themselves very quickly.

“But if we destroy the burrows, it is much more affective at keeping them away.”

With the success of the program, other local communities are now interested in adopting similar methods.

“The Chiltern Landcare Group is interested and has attended our meetings, as well as some other groups further up the Ovens,” Mr Armstrong said.

Mr Armstrong is hoping the system will be taken on by a broader market.

“I think it will become very widespread,” he said.

“And that is our ultimate goal.”

TUCKED away off a dirt road at the edge of Oxley is a tranquil parcel of land that has seen generations of the Simpson family grow and thrive.

And the current generation, among them farmer Geoff Simpson, is keen to continue working on the land in a sustainable way to ensure the connection continues into the future.

Geoff’s childhood memories include being his grandfather Frank’s constant companion as he carried out farm chores from feeding and milking cattle to cutting wood and even sowing crops as he got older.

“We’d go fishing, we played cards,” he said of his rural childhood, adding that the property means a lot to his extended family, including his parents Ian and Mary.

“It’s a central spot for everyone to come back to,” he said.

“I have strong ties to the place.

“My intention is to keep the farm going as long as I can.”

Geoff said his family’s connection to Oxley goes back to his great grandfather, Alexander Moyer Simpson, being among the small group of settlers known as the Farmers Five that originally settled on the land around Hurdle Creek back in the mid-19th century.

The farm was named after one of the local indigenous leaders of the time by Frank’s mother Janet, and Geoff said that the family had a lot of respect for the indigenous people of the area and their connection to the land.

Over the years the farm has fulfilled many functions, including dairy – and Geoff’s father helped build an irrigation system on the property.

He said he has strong memories of floods that have impacted the farm over the years, including the 1974 and 1993 floods.

The 1993 floods got so bad that the family had to help bring the neighbours to safety on their tractor.

“But – touch wood - we’ve never had a bushfire through here to my knowledge,” Geoff said.

Today, some of the land is leased to neighbours, with some paddocks even boasting vineyards.

With the property located on a floodplain, Geoff said he wanted to find a way to make use of the

naturally falling timber that occurs during and after such natural events, and this idea grew into his current business, Fallen Timber Furniture Company, which he runs from home.

He works mainly with naturally fallen timber, as well as reclaimed timber from old buildings and structures, with one of the most interesting pieces being wood from Wangaratta’s old stock bridge.

He said he has always been drawn to making things with wood because each piece has its own unique character.

“It’s amazing what it reveals,” he said.

“Wood tells stories of where it’s been.”

Geoff said events and weather impact on each tree, influencing how it grows and the “character, lines and faults” are etched in the wood.

He said he and his family were passionate about working with and respecting the land in a way that is sustainable and keeps the land healthy and productive well into the future.

Geoff hopes to one day have enough time and money to revegetate the property to a more natural state, removing weed species, planting natives and creating a sanctuary for wildlife.

He works hard to fight salinity on the property and shore up the banks of Hurdle Creek against erosion.

Kyabram wheat a bin-buster despite numerous setbacks A TRACTOR without electronics at planting time and half a paddock of lodged wheat did not stop the Thompson family at Kyabram from ending 2016 with a bin-busting crop.

Sam Thompson, who farms with his wife Danielle, brother Jake and his wife Sarah, and parents Glenn and Lois, said a battery problem disabled the electronics, forcing them to rely on eyesight rather than satellites.

“We were getting ready to sow in the first week of May when the electronics went, including GPS, so Dad sowed it in the best straight line he could,” said Mr Thompson.

Perhaps the most significant setback occurred when heavy rain forced them to stop spreading growth regulator Moddus on their Cobra wheat.

“We used Moddus on our high production crops to reduce the amount of foliage and thicken the stalk.

“It was so wet down the tramlines; Jake only got half of it out.

“We would’ve averaged nine tonne if we had it on all of it.”

Despite this, the growers harvested 130ha of Cobra wheat in the last week of December, which produced 8t/ha average, 13.6pc protein and H1 classification.

Their 40ha dryland crop of Trojan wheat also produced good results, finishing at 5.5t/ha average.

we used the pivot irrigators to finish it off,” he said.

“Sometimes if the head doesn’t fill, the seed sample can vary in colour and uniformity, but Cobra was the same colour and size all the way through.

“We’d drive 660m in the header and have a box full of grain.”

Mr Thompson said the weather was the deciding factor in their success, as Kyabram received its third highest rainfall in two decades, with 627mm recorded.

“By harvest, we had 580mm, then I gave the crop another two 15mm irrigations.”

The family crops about 600ha in

winter; mainly wheat, canola and oats, and in summer they grow corn, lucerne and sunflowers.

Premium lucerne is their main enterprise, which is sold domestically, and all three couples have their own acreage to crop.

Aside from Moddus, the other input that helped was extra nitrogen to chase higher protein levels.

“Being irrigated, I knew it would be lower in protein so I was pretty keen to boost that and aim for H2.

“At the flowering stage, I applied a final top dressing of 50kg/ha of nitrogen to boost protein, then it was irrigated.”

Mr Thompson said while the

strategy carried an element of risk given the price of water and urea, the cool temperatures at flowering and plentiful irrigation available meant it was viable.

“I didn’t know it was going to get H1.

“Under irrigation you don’t expect to get H1 so this was an unexpected bonus.”

The grower, who contract harvests in the district, said he discovered Cobra after harvesting his agronomist Tim Anderson’s crop in 2014.

“I stripped Tim’s Cobra in 2014 and it was the best wheat that year, so I wanted to grow it, too.”

Producers wanted for livestock theft monitoring research project

CQUniversity researchers are calling on producers to participate in a research program that aims to catch stock thieves by using smart technology.

In collaboration with AgForce, the research project is aimed

at developing a new livestock monitoring system which can be used by landholders and law enforcement agencies to remotely monitor animals.

The 2001/2002 National Farm Crime Survey, conducted by the Australian Institute

of Criminology, found that livestock theft was the most commonly reported rural crime, involving 186,777 animals with an estimated annual cost of $16 million, with a large number of crimes suspected as going unreported.

Water authority’s warning ahead of duck season GOULBURN-Murray Water (GMW) is reminding those participating in the 2017 duck hunting season that it has maps online outlining where hunting is permitted at its lakes, dams and reservoirs.

Victoria’s 2017 duck hunting season will run from Saturday, March 18 to Monday, June 12.

GMW water storages permitting duck hunting in the North East include Hume Reservoir, Lake Eildon, Lake

Buffalo and Lake Nillachootie.

Hunting, however, is not allowed along the GMW channel network at any time, and the use of firearms and hunting in public recreational areas and around storage assets is prohibited.

A cut above the rest MY Slice of Life has come a long way since its humble beginnings at a local market stall.

“We just laid out a cloth over a trestle table and spread some knives out, and that’s how it got started,” says owner and former butcher Brent Ibrom.

“I just couldn’t find good quality knives for myself,” he says.

“I eventually identified a good wholesaler, so I started selling them myself and it just kept evolving from there.”

And he has come a long way since.

Mr Ibrom now operates a family owned and operated store out of Wangaratta.

But his expertise has expanded far past knives, and he now specialises in seasonal markets, such as tomato and wine making, salami and home brew – and a whole host of home butchery supplies.

Mr Ibrom was born and raised locally and received his training by a traditional butcher in town.

“He was an old fashioned butcher, so he made small goods, bacon, kabana and a lot of traditional stuff you can’t find much anymore,” he says.

“So I learned a lot from him.”

The father of three says a lot of hunters come in now to take

advantage of their venison and other game meats.

“People know they can come here and get some pretty good advice.”

Due to their success, they now feel they’re almost bursting out of their current premises, so will be looking for a larger shop in the near future, even with an eye for expanding to a separate second location one day.

THE wait is almost over for thousands of duck hunters, as we near the opening of the 2017 duck season in Victoria.

It has been an eager wait, as we watched generous winter rains fill drought-affected waterways.

As expected, the ducks have reportedly followed the rain in numbers Victoria has not seen in some time.

Daniel Young (MLC, Northern Victoria) is a fourth-generation duck hunter and says he shares the sense of excitement building for what is anticipated to be an exceptional year.

“I am happy to have played a part in ensuring that our freedom to hunt ducks, like the generations of hunters before us, is not eroded – but encouraged,” he says.

“As a member of parliament, representing the Northern Victoria region, I have actively sought to promote and protect the hunting lifestyle, since taking office in late 2014.”

Most recently, Mr Young raised a successful amendment to the Wildlife Act last year that abolished the emergency closure committee.

As a result, the Game Management Authority will now have sole oversight to gauge conditions at wetlands and, if necessary, make immediate, real-time recommendations to

the government about whether there should be a closure.

“It is hoped the government has since implemented procedures to provide a more streamlined approach to deciding and notifying hunters if there will be any accessibility changes to reserves,” says Mr Young.

“This should prevent the debacle of last year’s last-minute closures, especially on the eve of opening day.

“I encourage anyone who has any issues to contact my office.

“Otherwise, I wish everyone well on opening weekend.”

Mr Young says he will be carrying on his family tradition of heading out with his dad, brother and friends in the hope of reaching full daily bag limits to put ducks on the dinner table, enjoying the great outdoors and making some new memories.

“There is a lot more water than last year,” he says.

“The lagoons still have water and they are not going to dry up.”

Mr Gigliotti was born and raised in Wangaratta and says we should see a good shooter turn out this year.

“The lead up to this season has already seen a lot of interest in new firearms and plenty of the steel shot sold.”

For those wanting to start out, he says steel shot has to be used and the most popular shotgun size is the 12 gauge, though he’s

noticed a lot of recent interest in 20 gauge, both of which are always in stock.

He also says most customers choose a number 4 or 5 shot.

“But most importantly, make sure you know your bird identification,” cautions Mr Gigliotti.

“And that you’re stocked up with the right equipment and a good, reliable firearm.”

And though the duck season looks to be tops, he assures hunters there’s plenty more out there to keep them occupied with the hound hunting and general deer season springing into action as well.

Ducks bring the dollars to North East

THE 2017 duck hunting season is fast approaching in what is set to be a great year for recreational hunters.

For the first time in three years, there will be a full-length season with a bag limit of 10 birds per day.

The full season was declared after increased rainfall led to a significant increase in waterbird breeding and habitat availability.

During the 2017 season – from Saturday, March 18 to Monday, June 12 – duck hunters will converge on areas across the North East, boosting the local economies.

The State Government found duck hunting contributed more than $99 million to the Victorian economy each year.

The majority of that amount is spent on fuel ($10.6 million), followed by ammunition ($8.1 million), and groceries ($6.7 million).

Local businesses that also see an economic boost through the duck hunting season are accommodation providers, restaurants and takeaway providers, mechanics and huntingsupply stores.

Following the uproar that followed the last minute closure of Lake Elizabeth on the eve of duck opening last year, the Victorian Government has vowed to work better with recreational hunters this year.

Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford came under fire last year after the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning ordered the closure of the lake the evening before opening.

Restrictions still apply this season, with the hunting of Blue-

Winged Shovelers prohibited.

Meanwhile, any North East farmers who have problems with ducks have been encouraged to connect with recreational hunters via the SSAA Farmer Assist program.

The SSAA Farmer Assist program was developed to provide an online portal in which farmers could find responsible hunters to help control pests and animals on their properties.

Council president Howard Smith said the increase from 350 kilograms to 450 kilograms only strengthens the valuable AustralianIndonesian trade relationship.

“This increase to feeder cattle average weight will be a boon to the northern cattle industry and essentially opens up a whole new market for producers.”

As part of the changes to the livestock trade terms between the two countries, feeder cattle up to 48 months can also now be shipped to Indonesia, up from a 30-month limit.

Deer control commences in Howitt-Wellington Plains PARKS Victoria extended their deer control program to the Howitt–Wellington Plains area for the ďŹ rst time.

Running the program for just three days in February, the trial was an opportunity to investigate the success of using ground shooting as a method of population control.

Parks Victoria, in partnership with the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA) and the Australian Deer Association (ADA), is implementing a three-year trial deer control program to limit environmental damage the deer are causing in the Alpine National Park.

The trial was the ďŹ rst of its kind in the Alpine National Park, and was aimed at deer control to help reduce impact on Alpine peatlands.

Alpine peatlands are boggy wetlands which occur at the headwaters of waterways in the Alps such as the Delatite River.

They play an important role in maintaining the healthy functioning of water catchments in the Alps and provide critical habitat for a number of important native plants and animals.

Since the trial commenced in May 2015, a total of 86 deer have been culled from the Bogong High Plains, and the control program was being extended to the Foothills and Southern Alps section of the

Parks Victoria’s area chief ranger Foothills and Southern Alps, Mike Dower, said visitor safety was paramount, and the ďŹ rst control program took place during the closed season for deer hunting. “Signs were placed at major access points advising visitors when deer control was being undertaken and which tracks

are closed,â€? he said. “The volunteer shooters have signiďŹ cant experience and expertise in deer hunting and will be readily identiďŹ able and act in accordance with all legal requirements to ensure the safe use of ďŹ rearms.â€?

Mr Dower explained that Parks Victoria’s deer control trial differs from recreational hunting in that it is aimed at protecting Alpine peatlands. “By undertaking deer control in the Howitt-Wellington Plains section of the park where recreational hunting is permitted, we may also be able to provide higher quality animals for recreation hunters by reducing the competition among the remaining animals,�

Abundance of water, lack of young farmers THE amount of water in storage at the end of February was unbelievable.

And prices for allocation water are still falling: Murray, Vic $46; Goulburn, Vic $45; Murray, NSW $35; and Murrumbidgee, NSW $20.

Storage levels in the Southern Basin also show how much water we have: Dart at 77 per cent; Hume at 78 per cent; Eildon at 72 per cent; Waranga at 72 per cent; and Snowy Blowing and Burrinjuck at 80 per cent.

Last year at this time, Menindee had 40GL and now it is at 1090GL, with Lake Victoria holding 450GL. There are currently eight gates open to sea.

All this water is due to the above-average winter through to the early above-average and timely rainfall over summer.

According to the Elders long range forecast, autumn is predicted to be below average until May.

Dairy farmers’ misunderstood needs VICTORIAN Premier Daniel Andrews under-funded and over-promised on grants offered to farmers hit by the dairy crisis, Tim McCurdy (MLA, Ovens Valley) has said.

“Just 332 of Victoria’s 4200 dairy farmers received funding

from the Dairy Development Grants Scheme before the grants ran out,” Mr McCurdy said.

“Daniel Andrews has severely misunderstood the needs of dairy farmers in this region who have been hit hard by this crisis

if he thinks supporting just eight per cent of farmers to recover is enough.”

Mr McCurdy said the government released the grants at a time when dairy farmers were busy with calving, hay and harvest.

HEREFORD producers have been urged to gain European Union accreditation to increase marketing options and take advantage of a valuable market.

Herefords Australia took on board a call for commercial producers to gain accreditation by a major processor during the weaner calf sales.

And, it is not only processors but lot feeders who are seeking EU accredited whiteface steers for branded product such as Hereford Reserve.

Thomas Foods International assistant livestock manager Ben Davies was disappointed over the lack of accredited Hereford pens at Wodonga and encouraged producers to heed the call.

TFI bought 200 EU accredited Hereford steers from the Casterton and Hamilton sales for the company’s Iranda feedlot at Tintinara.

“We were looking for calves over 350kg and paid 350-370c/ kg,” he said.

The EU remains Australia’s highest value large export market on a per tonne basis, with shipments averaging $12,610 a tonne and a total value of $297 million in 2015, according to Meat and Livestock Australia.

Since early 2009, Australian EU over-the-hooks grass fed cattle prices have consistently

been quoted 33c/kg above the heavy and medium steer.

In 2015, over-the-hook EU cattle prices across NSW and Queensland reached new highs, achieving a record yearly average price at 524c/ kg, an increase of 37 per cent year-on-year.

According to MLA market information, 20,273 tonnes of chilled beef was exported in 2016 – a 10 per cent fall on 2015.

A total of 568kg of frozen product was exported (33 per cent down on 2015) to give a total of 20,841 tonnes swt (shipped weight) of grass and grain fed product for the calendar year.

The top 10 cuts of Australian beef exported to the EU are topside, striploin, rump, silverside, cube roll/rib eye, roll, tenderloin, chuck roll, blade, thick flank/knuckle and chuck.

At the Victorian Western District weaner sales this year, there was a strong line-up of EU accredited steers, with the vast majority of buyers electing to retain the cattle in the system.

At Casterton, EU accredited steers sold for 360-418c/kg or $1139-$1395.

The next day at Hamilton, a larger selection of accredited pens resulted in steers over 350kg selling for 354-386c/ kg or $1323-$1580, and those 250-350kg returning 382-423c/ kg or $1077-$1364.

In the heifers at Hamilton on January 18, EU accredited pens sold for $780-$1306 or 335-406c/kg.

Herefords Australia chief executive officer Dr Alex Ball encouraged commercial producers to heed market signals and consider gaining European Union accreditation.

Commercial Hereford producers with a track record of selling EU accredited cattle spoke of lucrative premiums for steers and heifers.

Ron Beaton from Giant Rock Partnership in Nareen, sold steers and heifers at Hamilton where buyer Marc Greening retained the accreditation for his Injemira Advantage program.

“The EU has given me a slight premium over the years, but if you are not in it, you are missing out,” he said.

David Lyons from Melville Park studs, Vasey, sold his top pen of weaners, 371c/kg and EU accredited at Hamilton, for $1305 or 352c/kg, and $1227 or 372c/kg for his seconds weighing 330kg.

“EU accreditation has provided a premium at times on the steers and heifers but it also gives me another marketing option,’’ he said.

“There is no difference in the paperwork as we have to keep our data base up to date anyway.”

Demand for local garlic PARLIAMENTARY Secretary for Regional Victoria, Danielle Green, last week joined members of the Australian Garlic Industry Association and South Melbourne Market stall holders to celebrate the official opening of Victoria’s 2017 garlic season.

Ms Green met with stall holders and growers to discuss the different garlic varieties being grown in Australia and taste some of the specially prepared garlic dishes on offer at South Melbourne Market’s restaurants.

Ms Green said “Garlic is a favourite ingredient in many home

chefs’ cooking and our demand for good quality, locally sourced produce is growing,” Ms Green said.

“The Andrews Labor Government recognises the importance of all our food and fibre industries and is getting on with supporting the sector to realise its full potential on the global market.”

Demand from Australian consumers for good quality, locally sourced produce is growing and Victoria’s horticulture industry is looking to increase the amount and diversity of garlic grown locally.

Tracking weeds: look out for tropical soda apple

It also establishes in forests, along roadsides, and in horticultural and cropping areas.

Because of its prickly nature, TSA can prevent animals from reaching water and shade.

Its family members include eggplant, potato and tomato, and it can carry plant pathogens such as cucumber mosaic virus and tomato mosaic virus posing a risk to our horticultural industry.

Cattle can play a significant part in spreading TSA.

Seedlings have also been known to germinate in horse manure, so incoming horses should be held in a contained area for six days as well.

If you are in a TSA area, or suspect you might have bought livestock from a TSA area, take the time to check for new plants.

Regularly monitor cattle camps, stockyards, areas where cattle have been fed, and holding paddocks.

If you find, or suspect TSA, contact your local council weeds officer as soon as possible.

TROPICAL soda apple (TSA) is a noxious weed that originates from South America but has spread to areas of North America, Africa, India, Nepal and parts of Asia.

It was first identified in Australia on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, near Kempsey, in 2010.

It is a perennial shrub that grows to approximately one to two metres high.

It has large, unpalatable leaves, is covered with spines and produces mature, yellow fruit the size of golf balls.

In the immature stage, the fruit resembles small watermelons, pale green with dark green veins.

The plant can produce up to 200 fruit, each containing up to 200-400 seeds.

A single plant can produce up to 45,000 seeds each year.

TSA is a problem for several reasons: it spreads quickly, invading areas along river banks and pastures.

While the plant itself is not palatable, the fruit is attractive to cattle.

The viable seeds are spread through manure up to six days from ingestion.

Any seed not passed within six days becomes unviable.

Simple biosecurity measures can reduce the spread of TSA. If you are buying cattle from areas where TSA may be an issue, such as the North Coast of NSW, you must hold any incoming cattle for a minimum of six days in an area that can be closely monitored for seedlings.

Similarly, if you are selling cattle and they have had access to TSA, you must hold them in a clean paddock for a minimum of six days prior to moving them off your property.

It is illegal to move cattle, knowing they may be carrying TSA seeds.

These movements are traceable, and you can be prosecuted and fined for transporting TSA seeds via cattle movements.

By JARRAH LOH THE pens were full and the ramps were shoulder to shoulder at the Wangaratta Livestock Exchange for the 2017 Blue Ribbon Weaner Sale.

The event has turned into an impressive affair, with this year’s sale forced to be split into two days due to such large cattle numbers, with steers selling on the first day and heifers on the second.

Fourth generation farmer Graeme Norman from Tarrawingee had his Angus steers in the first pen when proceedings kicked off.

Though he wasn’t too confident being first cab off the rank, he was thrilled with his weaners this season.

“The cattle are looking very good this year, it’s probably the heaviest pen we’ve ever had,” said the 72-year-old.

“It was just such a good spring – we don’t get many like that.”

Mr Norman and his wife Pam were sceptical they could hit the high watermark of $1460 they pulled in last year, but it was all smiles when the auctioneer settled on their personal record high of $1475 a head.

“We’re very happy with the day,” said the couple.

“It’s our best outcome yet.”

Also in attendance was fifth generation farmer Shane Murphy from Carboor, with his father John.

Both Murphys had their best weaners on show, though the two have found their own preferred breeds.

“I have 17 Shorthorn Hereford cross steers here, and Dad has got 15 Angus Charolais cross,” said Shane.

“I’ve always had Herefords, but the last five years I’ve crossed with the Shorthorn.

“I get bigger cattle and they’re quiet, but it’s just good to have a different look.

“Especially when you get the roan cattle, which stand

out from the crowd and people really seem to like.”

His father John certainly isn’t immune to change either, having run Limousin F1 for years he has now switched to Charolais Angus cross.

“I only started on the Charolais not long ago, but it has been much better – especially their temperament and size,” said John.

“You can handle them much easier, which was a major reason I looked into them.”

Both father and son also walked away with smiles on the day, glad to see that last year’s high prices are not only remaining, but still rising.
