MANSFIELD farmers have been spared the feed crisis crippling Australia, with welltimed rain resulting in one of the best hay seasons seen in decades.

Hay contractors have been busy cutting, raking and baling as farmers scramble to make room in sheds that were barren just months earlier.

Twelve months ago, hay was being bought into the district from across the country, with many choosing WR RIp RDG VWRFN LQ DQ DWWHPSW to ride out the conditions.

Local producers were wondering what lay ahead when the Bureau of Meteorology forecast a long, dry summer - many predicting 2020 would be the hottest, and driest, on record. $OO RI 0DQVo HOG V neighbour shires are government drought declared, with outrage initially building that 0DQVo HOG KDG QRW EHHQ included; especially when less than half of the average spring rainfall was received.

Water protestors demand action on Murray Darling Basin Plan A PROTEST march to Canberra of more than 2000 irrigators, farmers and concerned environmentalists has called on the Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, for the immediate removal of Water Minister David Littleproud from his portfolio.

At a meeting held in Mansfield recently, Yea water activist and farmer Jan Beer said farmers want Mr Littleproud to go as they have no confidence or trust in his ability to deliver a Murray Darling Basin Plan on a sound economic, social and environmental footing. “Politicians are failing to acknowledge the destruction being wrought by the Basin Plan in its current format,� Ms Beer said. “Socially it is destroying regional communities, leaving high unemployment, towns without schools, doctors, sporting teams and causing untold suicides when people are left with no hope. “Economically it is destroying ZKDW ZHUH RQFH YLDEOH SURo WDEOH

farms, reliant agricultural enterprises, jeopardising our national food security with the systematic destruction of our southern MDB food bowl, particularly our dairy and fodder crop industries.�

Ms Beer, who led the protest against the Victorian Government’s construction of the north-south pipeline from Lake Eildon to Melbourne, believes environmentally the damage caused to the beds and banks of our major rivers, particularly the Murray and Goulburn rivers, is obscene and should not be tolerated under the guise of environmental flows. “Mismanagement and misuse of water,� Ms Beer said, our most precious resource, has seen: z collapse of banks; z loss of mature red gums both by bank collapse and excesVLYH p RRGLQJ z sediment build up; z increased hypoxic blackwater events; z carp population explosion;

z XQSUHFHGHQWHG o VK NLOOV z proliferation of invasive lippia weed; z disconnect of the Darling from the Murray River; and z disconnect of Murrumbidgee from the Murray River. “There is water available but Federal Government policies have denied farmers access to their most important resource vitally needed to grow food for the nation. “We headed to Canberra to confront the politicians head on and ask Prime Minister Morrison to explain why are they so intent on continuing with a plan that is simply not working as initially intended, and is destroying regional communities, farmers, our productive agricultural sector and our nation’s food security.�

Protestors have also called on the government to correct the following: 1. the Basin Plan be stopped immediately to prevent the eco-

nomic collapse of our regional communities; 2. a delegation to meet with Prime Minister Morrison; 3. NSW and Victorian governments to immediately withdraw from the current implementation of the Basin Plan; 4. water not welfare - immediately deliver the 1000GL Conveyance water to irrigators for use as an emergency allocation during this drought period; 5. the open water market policy WR EH UHFWLo HG VR WKDW ZDWHU LV DYDLO able to the productive consumptive pool at viable and sustainable prices. It should not allow water to be ‘bought and sold’ as a share commodity by investors, superannuation funds (both foreign and local) who own no land; 6. the MDBA proposed environmental outcomes, many of which are simply not achievable or feasible, to be immediately revised and reset; and 7. the 2007 Water Act to be repealed.

From page 1 “We really needed hay for the winter – and we didn’t get much last year – so there were a couple of paddocks that we knew didn’t have a good stand of grass in it so we put in Italian Rye Grass, with the late season, to try and get something going,� he said. “We added a bit of fertiliser, then fertilised again in the spring. “It wasn’t just the season – though that’s certainly helped – but we’ve cut more land and spread more fertiliser.�

Shane Callahan, from Callahan Seed Brokers in Mansfield, is in the hay business.

Each year he buys and sells hay and seed not just within Australia, but also internationally.

For him, 2019 has also been a good season. “In short, it’s been a fair hay season despite the drier than average spring,� he said. “Well presented crops have

yielded reasonably well, and there haven’t been too many interruptions during hay making, so people are pretty happy.�

Mr Callahan said it was all about when the rain fell, as opposed to how much. “It’s the distribution of the rainfall and when it falls, as well as the temperature was important,� he said. “We’ve had below average temperatures for October and November – so it was drier, but cooler, and the combination of the two has meant we have come through much better than areas to the north.�

In May this year Liberal member for Eildon, Cindy McLeish (MLA, Eildon), demanded the government explain why both Mansfield and Murrindindi shires had been excluded from drought status. “We have farmers who are in dire straits, who are worrying about how to pay the bills,� she said at the time. “They have dwindling

incomes and they worry about the next month.�

Although things have improved since then, Mansfield VFF president, James Tehan, said summer was still going to prove a challenge for locals. “We have been very fortunate, we have been blessed with September rain,� he said. “Our stocks were very depleted – but now we have a good supply of fodder going into an unknown summer. “But a lot of farmers around the area have said that their dams aren’t full – some of the lower country, because it’s had no run off, has dams that don’t look good. “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen dams look this dry after spring.�

Despite that, Mr Tehan said he was grateful for every bale.

He knows that whatever the next few months bring, Mansfield farmers have fared better than most – with hay sheds full and pasture to graze.

Game changing technology heralds the possibility of artificial pollination Successful field trials of Edete’s artificial pollination technology advance entry into the huge California almond market Ű

Without an alternative pollination solution to reduce the dependency on honeybees in the coming years, food prices might climb sharply, and supply might not meet the growing demand.

Larger commercial scale testing of Edete’s new system will continue in Israel and Australia.

The company plans to begin a pilot program using the technology in 2022 in California, the world’s largest almond growing region. “We are initially focusing our efforts on almonds, but our game-changing technology has huge potential for a wide range of other crops as well,� said Eylam Ran, chief H[HFXWLYH RIo FHU DQG FR founder at Edete.

The list of additional crops is long and includes apples, cherries, pears, blueberries, plums, FRWWRQ UDSHVHHG DQG VXQp RZ ers, to name a few.

The global almond market is estimated at over $7 billion annually, while 80 per cent of it is in the US, most of which is in California.

Costs are rising, as growers spend on beehive pollination services over $400 million per season. “We will be targeting top tier

producers in California, where seven per cent out of 7400 growers account for more than half of the cultivated area,� Ran said.

The market structure is much the same in Australia.

The company’s proprietary method enables the maintaining of good germinability rates of pollen stored for over one year.

The pollen is applied on the trees using the company’s unique robotic pollination system which utilises a combination of technologies to disperse an optimal dosage of pollen on WKH WDUJHW p RZHUV WR DFKLHYH HI fective pollination.

The application units can work during day or night and independent of ambient temperature.

Edete’s business model is based on supplying pollination services, like current contracting of beehives, the price of which continues to rise.

The service is expected to be competitive with current pollination alternatives but is expected to result in an estimated increase of 10 -20 per cent in yields and with much less volatility from one growing season to the next.

hen Darren and Sharon Young sold up their home in Belgrave Heights, Melbourne, and moved to Harston, a small town of 174, between Stanhope and Tatura in the City of Greater Shepparton, it was the realisation of a dream over two years in the making.

From the initial foray into backyard chickens and the resulting realisation that naturally grown, free range eggs tasted completely different from supermarket purchased, mass produced eggs, their interest in ethically grown produce was piqued.

And when a friend started raising his own lambs for WKH WDEOH DQG WKH p DYRXU ZDV incredible, the seed of an idea - for the Youngs to produce their own food - was well and truly planted.

It would take them two \HDUV WR o QG D SURSHUW\ their quest initially taking them to Gippsland before determining that the land was out of their budget for the space they would need to run their chosen livestock, pigs.

And armed with a huge amount of conviction, a two-day course on pasture raised pigs under their belt, and other than that limited to no farming experience, the Youngs embarked on their new enterprise. “We started off with two of the biggest pigs you’ve ever seen, a sow and a boar, and the boar would have weighed close to 480 kilos,� Darren said. “He was a beautiful pig, a gentle giant, but the pigs must have been too old as they didn’t breed. “Which in retrospect is a relief, considering his size he would have crushed the sow if he had managed to get up on top.� :LWK WKH o UVW WZR SLJV proving to be not particularly useful, Darren and Sharon SXUFKDVHG o YH IURP D IUHH range farm in West Wyalong that was closing down.

One of the sows was

already pregnant, and it is her offspring that would become the breeding matriarchs of Goulburn Valley Pork.

With their arrival, a studworthy boar was required, and not content with any old pig, the Youngs purchased this time from a professional breeder.

The slow start was intentional as the Youngs learned their new trade, and worked to get their business approved through council, intent on adhering to all regulations necessary to run a commercial piggery.

1RZ IXOO\ FHUWLo HG and with the potential to accommodate 500 pigs on the property, Darren and Sharon are currently pastureraising 200 pigs on their farm, with close to 30 breeding females.

The boar also has a young contender, who has joined the breeding stock. “However, they don’t know each other exists,� Darren said with a laugh.

The sows are Large White cross, Large Black and Landrace, and the boars are Duroc, which is a great cross for good shaped table pigs.

Black sheep in the Mangione family

By EMMA OLIVER MARILYN Mangioneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grandparents on both sides were farmers working the land in the Clyde and Cranbourne region.

Marilynâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother as a child always had to work on the farm with her older sister, and both declared at coming of age that they would never marry a farmer.

Luckily, Marilynâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father was also suitably disinterested, declaring to his parents that he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want any part of it either.

And though other family

members did stay on the farm, Marilynâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parents did not, and Marilyn was raised in a suburban home with her heart, like those of her grandparents, in the country.

It was in 1999 that this yearning for a rural lifestyle was realised in the purchase of 66 acres in the lush green tablelands of the Strathbogies.

Initially a weekender, Marilyn ran Wiltshire Horns, chosen for the convenience of not having to shear or crutch them.

But with plans to retire on the property, she became concerned that they were too big and strong to handle on her

own, and Marilyn began to consider alternatives.

An unexpected phone call from the owner of the now dispersed South Windrest Shropshire Stud in Bittern, determined the new direction Marilyn would take. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The gentleman said â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I have a lady who I sold a ram to, and sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not well and she needs to sell upâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;,â&#x20AC;? Marilyn recounted the conversation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;She wants him to go to a good homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; was the explanation.â&#x20AC;?

Clarendon, as was his name, became the foundation ram and the namesake of Clarendon Stud.

Six years old when she got him, Clarendon lived to the ripe old age of 11, and facilitated the phasing out of Wiltshire Horns to be replaced with Shropshires.

That unexpected phone call was a fortuitous moment, as Marilyn believes she had always had the breed in the back of her mind. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My ancestors are from Shropshire, England, near Staffordshire, on the border with Wales, and my father served on the HMAS Shropshire in World War II,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That ship fought in all the ELJ EDWWOHV WKH 3DFLo F WKH &RU al Sea, Lingayen Gulf. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was particularly noted for its accuracy and I grew up hearing stories of it, and the VLJQLo FDQFH LQ P\ PLQG ZDV never lost.â&#x20AC;?

With Shropshire so entrenched in her ancestral history, the heritage breed sheep with its good temperament, ease of handling and smaller frame seemed the obvious choice for her stud. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Originally Shropshires would have had horns,â&#x20AC;? Marilyn said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have the black ears, black faces, black legs, and LQFUHGLEO\ ZKLWH p HHFH EXW at some point in their history they were polled. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The wool previously had

been prized, and is still wellconsidered for spinning and knitting but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a soft wool. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The New Leicester at one point was put over the ShropVKLUH WR LQp XHQFH WKH QDWXUH RI the wool. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And as such the wool is not barbed or hooked, and is supposed to have a non-itch factor, but all this interference with the Shropshire means that no one knows exactly what the original breed and its p HHFH ZDV OLNH y And though Marilyn does use the wool to make scarfs, beanies, socks and jumpers, her primary business is stud rams and sheep, and her motivation is ensuring this rare breed continues to exist.

With lambs that grow out slower and longer before they can go to market, the breed can often be overlooked.

However, the smaller Shropshire offers more beneo WV WKDQ MXVW EHLQJ FRQVLGHUHG for the haste in which producers can get it from the paddock to the plate. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They are the most incredible orchard animals,â&#x20AC;? Marilyn said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ring bark trees and they only trim to head height, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve watched them eat the leaves, and they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pull and rip them, they just take the leaf off. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The conformation of their body, with their shorter legs and wider rib cage means they cannot stand on their

back legs, and their short thick necks stop them from damaging branches. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And this all contributes to their weight being evenly dispersed and so they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t overly compact the soil. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Marriott Cherries in South Australia runs my Shropshires in their orchard and this has assisted them in obtaining orJDQLF FHUWLo FDWLRQ â&#x20AC;&#x153;The sheep keep the grass and weeds in check, and clean up any fallen fruit avoiding IUXLW p LHV â&#x20AC;&#x153;And they are effectively running four crops to each acre, with the fruit, the wool, the sires and the meat.â&#x20AC;?

The meat itself is considered delicious, with the sheep holding weight well, and the resulting lamb well marbled with the breed considered the original lamb roast due to its round fat legs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had breeders in the past say to me they only put the Shropshire in the freezer, and if they have other breeds those are the ones that go to market,â&#x20AC;? Marilyn said.

Marilyn keeps her breeding ewes for eight years, and after that point deems it cruel to be putting them into lamb again.

Rather than suffer in the paddock, prone to teeth problems, they go to market as cull ewes.

Marilyn is adamant that she wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t put sick or weak ewes on the truck and prefers to shoot them in the paddock,

All about the breed at Black Diamond â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;M farming through and through,â&#x20AC;? Murray Van der Drift of Black Diamond Speckle Parks and Macorna Limousins said with a laugh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I can talk cows all day,â&#x20AC;? he added, his passion evident for Speckle Parks and Limousins which the family specialise in.

Murray Van der Drift is third generation farming, working the land of his grandfather in the tiny town of Macorna, 100 kilometres west of Echuca.

His grandfather ran a commercial beef operation, however, it was Murrayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father ZKR DW ERXJKW WKH oUVW French Limousins as stud stock and embarked on a new enterprise, building up a stud.

It was 25 years later in 2014, that the Speckle Parks were added to the portfolio as the Van der Drifts were looking to add another pure breed to their commercial herd to balance out the muscle in the Limousins. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to put fat on a French Limousin,â&#x20AC;? Murray said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re designed for muscle, and so initially we were putting the Limos over a British bred cow to give the softness, but ultimately we wanted a breed that had the performance in muscle but did not compromise on fat cover. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We did our research and were intrigued by the Speckles which were relatively new to Australia but kept winning the

carcass competitions in Canada where they were developed, so we gave them a go. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been impressed ever since. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Initially it was four cows and two bulls and we thought we wanted to try them in the commercial herd with the Angus, which were usually covered by Limos. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Can I say that we were so pleased with the results, that we started Black Diamond Speckle Parks so we could breed our own stud quality bulls.â&#x20AC;?

A multi-purpose breed with a moderate frame, Speckle Parks can meet so many commercial markets with their doing ability on grass and in feed lots. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have a consistent high quality carcass across the board,â&#x20AC;? Murray said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just the breed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re tough â&#x20AC;&#x201C; real tough, surviving in 40 degrees below in Canada and 40 degrees above in Australia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Adapting to harsh climatic situations they can pretty much survive on the smell of an oily rag. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And then they have that beautiful hide that everyone loves. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They look pretty in a paddock, they just tick so many boxes.â&#x20AC;?

Murray said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are going back to the roots of the breed, and strivLQJ WR oQG WKH EHVW JHQHWLFV the breed has to offer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our goal has been to increase the genetic diversity of the Speckle Parks in our herd.â&#x20AC;?

And this approach appears to be paying the big dividends, with the Black Diamond progeny enjoying success at local and interstate shows. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We show like crazy,â&#x20AC;? Mur-

ray said, with obvious enjoyment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, we do the three royal shows and then plenty of others in between. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Three years ago we won Supreme Speckle Park in Adelaideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Speckle Park Feature Show, and only just recently we won Junior Champion Interbreed Bull at Geelong from an embryo that we had imported.â&#x20AC;?

Murray said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And as every show is different, we never take any two teams the same. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In fact there is little to no cross-over between our au-

tumn and spring show season transition, with our objective being to always showcase our new cattle and what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re achieving. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The spring shows we broke in 39 head of cattle, and then we turned around and broke in another 31 for the autumn shows, which included calves, steers, heifers, bulls. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important for us to showcase our herd across the board, so that clients see many aspects of our breeding program.â&#x20AC;?

This also applies to the Limousins which the Van der Drifts also show, with the highest accolade theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve achieved scoring them the title of Grand Champion Female at the 2019 National Show and Sale.

MINISTER for Drought David Littleproud has slammed Coles for its low act of skimming millions off the top of its 10 cent milk levy.

The ACCC has ordered Coles to pay farmers and processor Norco $5.25 million it failed to pass on from its â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;drought levyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Coles promised me when I negotiated the deal that all the money would go to farmers,â&#x20AC;? Minister Littleproud said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They told their customers they were helping farmers, then tried keeping the money. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Coles has shown its true colours and needs to put things right. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Coles should now lead the way and put at least 20 cents a litre right across its dairy range, not just on milk, to show they really do care about dairy farmers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They owe it to dairy farmers and the public for failing to live up to their promises and it will allow time for government reforms such as the Dairy Code of Conduct to come into effect. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Australians should show their support for dairy farmers by boycotting Coles until it comes good with this.â&#x20AC;?

by Mistletoe Limousins THIS is the 16th year that Mistletoe Limousins has been involved in the Beef Week Field Days using the day as a very useful tool for the sale of bulls and selected females as well as displaying the majority of their herd for inspection to the commercial and stud breeders from all over Victoria and southern NSW. The Mistletoe herd is from a base of French genetics which gives certainty of breeding.

The use of polled genetics from North America has seen the herd become predominantly polled, with good fat cover while retaining the Limousin traits of good muscle, ease of calving, docility, high yield and the ability to do well on grass pastures.

After 26 years of breeding

there is predictability in the genetics of the ten, 19 month old sires and nine, 24 month old sires and half a dozen 12 month old bull calves which gives the commercial breeders a chance to pick the sire that suits the market that they are aiming for.

Cow families will be on display so that buyers can see the breeding females that have produced this impressive line-up of young sires.

Being able to inspect siblings of the bulls and their dams or grand dams enables the visitors to view the consistency of breeding that produces a product that will breed true to the sireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s genetics.

Estimated breeding values will be available for all animals as a tool to assist in the

decision of purchasing a new bull, but the bull that usually suits is the one that takes the attention of the buyer as they enter the pens.

All bulls are delivered free of charge within a 120km radius (longer distances by negotiation) and are part of the Limousin Assured Program.

Private treaty sale planned for Kanimbla OFFERING an alternative to their annual spring sale, Kanimbla Poll Herefords has responded to client demand and is offering 35 bulls for sale from January 29 onwards, with an Autumn Private Treaty sale planned.

Taking into consideration the current drought conditions, Kanimbla are proposing a delayed payment option for prospective clients.

“We are giving clients the chance to purchase at the beginning of the year, and then we will hold the bulls free of charge at Kanimbla for them until winter if necessary,” James McWilliam, one of Kanimbla Livestock’s owners, said.

Rosstulla back in Beef Week LONG time supporters of the Victorian Beef Week, the Forrest family of Beechworth, have decided to re-enter the open days following a year off.

“Last year we did not enter Beef Week because our allocated day was on Australia Day so we decided to hold our own on-property open day in March instead,” Rex Forrest said.

“While our own day was very successful and we were able to have a number of trade displays which proved to be very popular, we have

again committed to enter the Victorian Beef Week instead.”

“For us the drought continues with the third poor spring in a row making conditions tough and this seems to be a product of our altitude.

“Despite the cattle doing it hard, we are still planning to show a selection of cows and calves, a sire or two and of course the young bulls for private sale.

“It’s a good time to be looking to change your bulls over as older bulls are selling well at the moment.

“We are extremely pleased

with the way the Otapawa Spark 3060 females are breeding.

“I am happy to say that we still have a limited amount of the imported semen available for sale but this will come to an end as the bull is now dead and we have received our very last batch of his semen from New Zealand.

“We look forward to seeing anyone who is interested in cattle on the 30th.”

Exciting times ahead for Chateau team THIRTY seven years ago John and Beverley McIntyre made the decision to breed Limousin cattle making Chateau Limousins one of the oldest Limousin studs in the country.

John and Beverley, now with their son Andrew and his wife Jenna McIntyre, have seen some pretty exciting times in the beef industry.

Having worked with other breeds on their introduction to Australia, John and Bev settled on Limousins as they felt they suited the market place best with the calving ease, early maturity and carcase qualities making Limousin the obvious choice for the domestic market.

The McIntyres traditionally bred the â&#x20AC;&#x153;French Pureâ&#x20AC;? type being apricot in colour and horned, but with changes to husbandry practices and market acceptance have moved

towards polled genetics as well as breeding a select number of black bulls each year.

In 2011, John and Bev together with son Andrew and daughterin-law Jenna stepped back into the spotlight returning to the Limousin National Show and Sale after a nearly twenty-year break to regularly feature in the sale toppers in both the bull and female sections.

Following their success at the national, the family moved to hold their own annual on property sale.

This also made them the only Victorian stud to do so.

2020 will see Chateau hold their 6th annual sale to be held at a new location, being at Andrew and Jennaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newly purchased property, ensuring that John and Bevâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Chateau Limousinsâ&#x20AC;? legacy will be in good stead to be able to con-

Save our soils before itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too late CROP OF THE FUTURE: Hardy and durable, this perennial native grass is being considered as an option for dryland cropping.

Kangaroo grass â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the super crop of the future?

A BENDIGO-based research teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work to unlock the potential of Kangaroo grass (Themeda Triandra) as a viable cropping option in the face of climate change is receiving Australian Government backing of $1.82 million.

Minister for Agriculture, Senator Bridget McKenzie, said the project could be a game changer for dryland cropping enterprises through the south eastern Australian wheat and sheep belt. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kangaroo grass has characteristics that make it resilient to prolonged drought and extreme variances in temperature and rainfall,â&#x20AC;?

Senator McKenzie said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an extremely hardy and durable perennial native grass that is nutritious and palatable to livestock when

it is young â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but it is also being recognised as a potential grain crop in its own right. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This project will research and draw heavily on traditional Indigenous knowledge to help farmers develop more of an understanding of factors limiting germination and the establishment success of the species in a commercial cropping situation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our government sees JUHDW EHQHo WV LQ WKLV LQQR vative approach by Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation to increase the size of seed production areas by using science-based evidence to select best yielding varieties for application to varying climates and growing conditions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a valuable outreach and knowledge sharing component to this

work through the ongoing process of engagement with traditional owners, farmers and Landcare groups. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Workshops, site visits and direct engagement will be undertaken to support the up-skilling of land managers and traditional owner groups to increase the uptake of this novel approach to cereal crop production.â&#x20AC;?

The inaugural Save our Soils: Australian Soil Snapshot 2020 commissioned by Soil Science Australia, released on December 5 for World Soil Day, suggests protection of Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most valuable natural asset, now worth $1 trillion per year, will demand coordinated education, datasharing, research, policy and on-farm application to achieve sustainable land management on a national scale. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Soil is the living skin of the earth, supporting our food production, economy and health, yet our valuable soils are under increasing attack,â&#x20AC;?

The right tools for the job FARMERS are being urged to check nitrogen levels in soils ahead of sowing.

One accepted strategy to FRPEDW D QLWURJHQ GHo FLHQF\ LV topdressing with liquid fertilis-

ers soon after sowing, early in the season to maximise yields.

Liquid fertilisers have been found to be up to 10 times more effective than common granular fertilisers,

greatly improving yields.

DAVEY FIRE ACTION PROTECTION PLAN

Help protect your property and your family.

The best time to get bushfire ready, is now. Make a fire protection action plan, put it up where everyone can see it and ensure family members are well trained. In a fire, you’ll be glad you did.

Davey’s recommendations for effective fire pump management and maintenance are an important part of your fire protection action plan.

1. Know the machine: Ensure all members of the household know how to locate and operate attachments like inlet and outlet hoses to the fire pump.

8. General maintenance regime: Regular checks will ensure fuel lines are in good condition and the recoil starter works. A regular service schedule is invaluable.

2. Fuel - Petrol: Petrol has a limited life and can become ‘stale’. Change the fuel every two months by running the pump or draining it of fuel. Better still, use a fuel stabiliser which will dramatically extend the life of the fuel (must be added when new fuel is purchased).

9. Check the plumbing: Investigate and maintain the water system.

3. Fuel - Diesel: Has a longer shelf life but generally needs to be stored at low ambient temperatures.

Expect diesel fuel to last 12 months or longer at an ambient temperature of 20ºC, or six months at an ambient temperature of 30ºC. 4. Engine oils: Engine manufacturers offer their own specially branded engine oils to best suit their engines.

Synthetic multi-grade engine oil is NOT a suitable alternative. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s engine lubrication recommendations.

5. Run engine regularly to ensure oil is well distributed around the moving parts. This provides best lubrication and a longer working life.

10. Check for leaves, debris and sticks that can impede the inlet system. For permanent installations, a foot valve and strainer at the end of the suction line can overcome obstructions.

11. Checked for air leaks and that all gaskets and seals are in good order.

12. An underground ring main installed around your property with durable hydrant or standpipe outlets can give you much greater coverage.

13. Practice: A well-rehearsed and documented fire plan is critical to personal survival.

6. Ensure your pump set has adequate clean air access: Check and replace the air cleaner or filter per engine manufacturer recommendations.

7. Keep the engine cool: Ideally protect the pump from radiant heat in a flame proof enclosure, otherwise add a mist spray around the pump or its enclosure to aid cooling and humidify the air.

With more than $11,000 in prizes up for grabs, Mr McCormack said it was a great time to get on board. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Along with our normal cup events, in 2020 we are introducing an obstacle challenge,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is for all those riders who want to have a go, but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to enter the race itself.â&#x20AC;?

It is a tradition stretching back 150 years â&#x20AC;&#x201C; something Bruceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father, grandfather and great grandfather all did with their families.

Each year is different â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and 2019 saw riders dodging VQRZp DNHV DQG FDWWOH KXGGOHG together to avoid the rain.

Despite this â&#x20AC;&#x201C; wet jeans, slicked hair and misty mornings â&#x20AC;&#x201C; smiles can be found on every face.

Today, most have had their licences taken away, or have chosen to remain in the low country over summer.

Bruce McCormack, however, would not swap his muster for all the tea in China. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about spending time with the family, and doing that while we are out in the bush together,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Showing the kids where the cattle need to go, helping them o QG WKHP DJDLQ LQ WKH HDUO\ morning on day two and three.â&#x20AC;?

:LWK o UHV UDJLQJ DFURVV WKH country, Bruce says it is more important than ever to keep the practice of cattle grazing in the mountains alive. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There have always been arguments for and against grazing in the High Country, and our run has moved back to the state forest as a result,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But it is pretty obvious, just by driving through the national park, that not allowing cattle in does make a big difference â&#x20AC;&#x201C; there are blackberries and bracken where there would once have been grass.â&#x20AC;?

Bruce, who is also president of the Mountain Cattlemenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Association of Victoria (MCAV), said he considered his grazing run a privilege, not a right.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I like to think we are doing something for everyone by being up here,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That the cattle keep the weeds and undergrowth at bay, while providing a living link to our pioneering ancestors.â&#x20AC;?

Families come from near and far to help out on the PXVWHU q p \LQJ IURP LQWHUVWDWH to take part in the long-standing tradition. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All I want is that we all learn about the bush, about the best way to manage it and to appreciate what we have here on our doorstep,â&#x20AC;? Bruce said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;After all, looking after the High Country is something we have been doing for 150 years.â&#x20AC;?

Working dogs in Australia have some of the toughest conditions to work in during the summer months and can be subject to severe illness and death if heat stroke occurs. Heat stress occurs when an animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to regulate its temperature is unable to combat excessive environmental heat and/or intensive exercise. The consequences of heat stress can be devastating and can quickly lead to multi-organ failure affecting the kidneys, liver, heart, lungs and brain. The widespread effect on multiple body systems can cause problems with blood clotting, seizures, shock, respiratory distress, and unconsciousness. Irreversible brain damage and death may result if heat stressed aniamals are not treated quickly and appropriately.

This can be compounded by factors such as exercise, lack of ventilation, dehydration, genetics, age, coat type or thickness, weight, upper airway problems, previous episodes of heat stress or incidence of other underlying disease.

What to do if you suspect heat stroke: Heat stroke is a medical emergency and needs to be taken seriously. The consequences of heat stroke can be severe and may not be evident straight away. Time is a critical factor in securing a good outcome for the patient. Active cooling should be started as soon as possible by having the dog under a cool hose or some form of flowing ZDWHU 1% &RRO ZDWHU LV EHWWHU WKDQ IUHH]LQJ water - If the water is too cold the dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s blood vessels will rapidly constrict to a very small size and can actually slow down the rate of cooling TXLWH VLJQLILFDQWO\ :HW WRZHOV DQG FORWKV FDQ EH

Offer water to your dog if it is able to drink. Transport your dog into an air-conditioned vehicle without drying it so that the cooling process can continue on your way to the veterinarian. Please take the risk of heat stroke seriously this summer and be mindful when using working dogs, ultimately prevention is better than cure when it comes to this condition.
