THE Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) Wangaratta branch is mounting an ambitious campaign to convince Australian farm organisations to lobby the Federal Government to ban cattle auctions at which the final price to graziers is determined by the livestock’s post-sale weight.

Wangaratta branch president Greg Mirabella said the producers meeting that was held last month to discuss an on-going Senate inquiry into buying practices in the red meat industry voted unanimously – as part of a broader suite of saleyard reforms – to work to make post-sale weighing illegal.

The decision came on the eve of an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announcement that an investigation had failed to establish if buyers acting on behalf of meat processors had colluded in February last year to try to force the introduction of post-sale weighing at the Northern Victoria Livestock Exchange at Barnawartha, which had just opened.

The ACCC had examined allegations that nine buyers collectively boycotted the sale, in which cattle were offered for auction on the basis of their pre-sale weight.

The ACCC used statutory powers to request information, data and documents from all nine buyers that were allegedly involved.

The report highlights a lack of high-quality rail links to the port and calls on the government to start work on the fully funded, $58 million port-rail shuttle immediately, and begin planning a rail link to Webb Dock, due to open as a container port this year.

The VFF has called for clarity around the term of the lease including the 20year lease extension. “It’s pleasing that the report recommends proper

parliamentary process to be followed for any lease extension,� Mr Tuohey said.

The VFF has expressed concern around the day-today costs of accessing the port which could skyrocket if a regulatory framework is not in place. “The report has echoed some of our concerns of vertical integration should a future port owner become a stevedore, which would result in a potential anticompetitive operation. “This is a $6 to $8 billion state asset and we need to ensure the lease

The ADIC has previously expressed concern at rent potentially doubling by 2023, which will signiďŹ cantly impact dairy’s competitiveness globally.

Mrs Joliffe added that the pricing, ongoing cost effectiveness and efďŹ ciency of the Port will continue to play a pivotal role in the global competitiveness of Australian dairy. “In conjunction with the VFF, the ADIC will continue to engage with the Victorian government to ensure the lease agreement encourages competition and efďŹ ciency,â€? she said.

VFF president Peter Tuohey said that in the lobby group’s submission it called for ongoing infrastructure investment into regional and rural Victoria, which he said he was pleased to see prioritised in the report. “We have always maintained that regional Victoria should get its fair share of the lease of the Port given farmers and regional Victorians are the main economic drivers of its use,� he said. “We have also made it abundantly clear that the lease of the Port of Melbourne must include safeguards around pricing. “We are calling on both the State Government and

THE release of the report into the proposed lease of the Port of Melbourne has addressed some of the concerns highlighted by farming groups alike, however, according to the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) and the Australian Dairy Council (ADIC) there are still a number of key issues that need to be addressed to encourage fair competition and efďŹ ciency.

Both the ADIC and VFF welcomed the Parliament of Victoria’s report on the proposed lease of the Port of Melbourne, with ADIC chair Simone Joliffe having said that the dairy industry was pleased to see key recommendations address a number of concerns around the proposed lease. “This report’s recommendations reflect the industry concerns regarding the impact of the lease on leaseholders,� she said. “In particular, the recommendations to amend legislation that will lock in a role for the Essential Service Commission to manage complaints around port pricing is a positive acknowledgement of industry advice. “However, key issues including safeguards for lease holders are not addressed. “There needs to be greater oversight and safeguards on fees and charges for port uses. “Further, the issue of compensation for leaseholders, the amount of money being allocated to rural and regional Victoria, the timing and process for development of a second port, and the investment in the freight infrastructure servicing the port must also be considered,� Mrs Joliffe said.

Country of Origin labelling proves important after another frozen berry scare VITAL reforms to Australia’s food labelling system has once again come to the forefront of food producers’ minds as four new cases of hepatitis A is being linked to frozen berries imported into New Zealand.

AUSVEG claims that the New Zealand health scare, which echoes the outbreak of hepatitis A linked to imported frozen berries that occurred in early 2015 in Australia, highlights the need for regulations that give consumers the power to choose where their food comes from.

“Given the situation in New Zealand and similarities to what took place in Australia, it’s more important than ever that Australia has effective Country of Origin Labelling,” said AUSVEG deputy chief executive officer Andrew White.

“We’ve seen New Zealand raise concerns in the Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation about the impact that Australian Country of Origin Labelling reforms could have on New Zealand food producers who import food into Australia.

“All Australia’s reforms will introduce transparency into our labelling system so that consumers can make informed decisions about their food purchases.

“The only producers who could possibly be hurt by this kind of reform are those who are importing dangerous produce from countries with lax food safety standards and want to hide this vital information from consumers,” he said.

The new health scare has led to New Zealand’s opposition parties calling on the government to introduce mandatory Country of Origin Labelling.

“Shoppers deserve to have this kind of information available to them in the supermarket aisle, and New Zealand’s statement to the Ministerial Forum goes against all principles of consumer rights,” Mr White said.

“Transparent food labelling must apply equally to all countries, regardless of trading relationships, so that consumers get the information they want and sorely need.”

The Federal Government recently released its Consultation Regulation Impact Statement which outlines issues

to consider in implementing the reform agenda.

Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science Christopher Pyne said that significant progress had been made in meeting community expectations and that government was keen to talk to business about their role in delivering these improvements to customers.

“We have come a long way in addressing an issue that many governments of both side before us have failed to resolve,” he said.

“The next step is to gather the right information to ensure our final decision meets everyone’s needs.”

A new label for food is proposed with the kangaroo in a triangle icon and a bar chart with accompanying text showing what proportion of ingredients are from Australia.

Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Barnaby Joyce said the work was being undertaken jointly with state and territory governments, reflecting shared responsibility for Australia’s origin labelling system.

“We are determined to deliver a meaningful and clear Country of Origin Labelling system for food and we are well on the way to making that happen,” he said.

“Concerns about Country of Origin Labelling have been going on for too long.

“The changes we have flagged will finally address those concerns so that Australian shoppers can have confidence about the origins of the food that they buy,” Mr Joyce said.

The consultation includes an opportunity to comment on a draft information standard that sets out the rules around food products and the proposed new labelling requirements.

Ministers said they also wanted to hear from businesses outside of the food sector as both food and non-food businesses would be interested in other proposed changes that will make using Country of Origin Labelling much easier.

Input from food importers, retailers, wholesalers, farmers and Australia’s trading partners were also encouraged.

Matilda’s offers consumers a berry good and safe product THE first all-Australian frozen berries have hit supermarket shelves thanks to third-generation strawberry farmers Matt and Ruth Gallace.

Until recently, commercial quantities of Australian frozen berries have not been available.

The only frozen berries that were available were imported from other countries.

The couple’s 100 per cent locally grown frozen berry business, Matilda’s, was launched after dozens of people contracted Hepatitis A from eating imported contaminated frozen mixed berries.

Berries are sourced from the 800 acre Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm in Main Ridge, Victoria and Queensland, which has been in the Gallace family for 50 years.

Raspberries and blueberries are sourced from New South Wales and Tasmania.

The berries are all handpicked, washed and snap frozen in an entirely new purpose-built facility in the Yarra Valley.

Gallace said the fact that they have built the factory from the ground up, and the packing site is exclusively for fruit, means there is no risk of cross contamination.

“In many cases nuts are processed on the same site used to process other foods, which causes great concern for parents who have children with allergies,” she said.

“My daughter has anaphylaxis and I’m only too well aware of the need to ensure there is no chance of contamination.

“The beauty of having our own site means it’s only used

exclusively for fruit, so there is nothing else processed on site,” Mrs Gallace said.

She added that the origin of each product is completely transparent too and is labelled on each and every bag, so consumers know which region the berries came from.

“We’re really proud to be able to provide a product which really challenges the current food labelling system.

“There needs to be far more transparency as to food origin, how it’s processed and packaged.”

Mrs Gallace believes that it is now up to the consumer to show they want a wholly Australian product and to ask for it at their local retailer.

“Demand will now be driven by the consumer, and the people really do hold the power.

“If you ask for the product, your retailer will order it in,” she said.

“Although it was clear that processors communicated about the sale, the evidence did not demonstrate that any of (them) entered an arrangement or reached an understanding not to attend the sale, which is required to establish a breach of the (Competition and Consumer) Act,” said ACCC chairman Rod Sims.

“There is a fine line between social discussions about industry issues on the one hand and exchanging information in circumstances that may constitute an understanding between competitors on the other.”

Mr Sims said that the investigation had identified some concerns which the ACCC agricultural enforcement and engagement unit will review in 2016.

Mr Mirabella said the farming community never expected any other outcome.

“As always, evidence of collusion or cartel-like activity is very difficult to get unless people are willing to speak,” he said.

Goomalibee Park beef producer Maureen Cottam said the main problem with post-sale weighing is it affects the quality of the product for consumers.

“What we do is look from paddock to plate,” she said.

“As beef producers we are trying to produce a quality product so that when you sit down to your steak it is the best it can be.

“Post-sale weighing delays the time of the slaughter placing stress on the animal, it delays the time the meat is chilled, in fact the whole postsale puts stress on the animal which needs to be prevented because it affects the muscle of the animal and ultimately the end product.

“Farmers are savvy now and they know just how much their cattle weigh pre-sale and as they step up into the truck and how much they weigh after they are sold and have been standing around.

“Post-sale weighing really has become an animal welfare issue which then becomes a meat quality issue that arrives on your plate,” Mrs Cottam said.

THE introduction of the Water Amendment (Review Implementation and Other Measures) Bill 2015 has been welcomed by all agricultural stakeholders but all insist that the economic, social and environmental benefits to the Murray Darling Basin (MDB) are of vital importance for the Act to be sufďŹ ciently balanced for all.

The Water Amendment Bill aims to deliver a more balanced outcome for agriculture, communities and the environment by providing more ďŹ&#x201A;exibility to the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder (CEWH).

In particular the CEWH will no longer have to buy back more water when it trades water on to the temporary water market.

Instead, the CEWH can now invest in environmental water works and measures.

He said that the VFF also welcomes the commitment to taking a more serious look at the socioeconomic impacts of the MDBP. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The five yearly reviews will give basin communities a chance to tell their story of what is happening to their towns and businesses. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Federal Government will need to keep a sharp eye on how the selfregulation of the water market intermediaries is working. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Farmers need to feel conďŹ dent that the water market is a level playing ďŹ eld,â&#x20AC;? Mr Anderson said.

Australian Dairy Industry Council (ADIC) also was happy with the governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s response to the review of the Water Act. Newly appointed ADIC chair Simone Joliffe said that the industry welcomed the adoption of recommendations including to provide greater trading ďŹ&#x201A;exibility for the CEWH. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The ADIC has long sought this ďŹ&#x201A;exibility for the CEWH in optimising environmental outcomes in ways that ensure dairy producers have better access to water supplies,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dairy has proved a

ďŹ&#x201A;exible and responsible user of water. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have adapted our practices to be more water-efďŹ cient, however, reduced access to water resources is already putting pressure on dairyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s productivity and proďŹ tability. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This ďŹ&#x201A;exibility is key to helping our industry remain viable. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It will also ensure a balanced approach to achieving environmental outcomes in the Murray Darling Basin,â&#x20AC;? Mrs Joliffe said.

She described this as a positive ďŹ rst step for the industry but highlighted that the ADIC was eager to see greater improvements made in the implementation of the Act and the MDBP. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That the government didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t agree with the submissions of many to amend the Act to unambiguously state a triple bottom line objective or to strengthen the current implementation of the legislation is of concern. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Such an approach is critical,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Mrs Joliffe added that there is a need for a robust evaluation of environmental, economic and social impact before considering an additional 450 gigalitres of water being taken from agriculture.

Federal Member for Murray Sharman Stone said that water is a precious resource for our communities, economies and the environment and continues to be a critical input for agriculture. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Around $2.5 million is being invested every day for the next several years,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unfortunately Laborâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s untargeted water buybacks during the millennium drought is estimated to cost in excess of $5 million per day in lost productivity across the basin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The amendments must make the triple bottom line of social, economic and environmental outcomes better balanced in the Water Act,â&#x20AC;? Dr Stone said.

Le Martres acquires Ivyrock Limousin Stud elite cow families LE MARTRES Limousin Stud has invested in its future by acquiring a series of elite cow families from the renowned Ivyrock Limousin Stud at Ballarat.

According to stud principal Leon Martin, he has championed the importance of cow families in breeding up the Le Martres herd to its current high profile status.

In the acquisition, two renowned dam families â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Premier Vixen Y22â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Arkhade Magritte Q10â&#x20AC;&#x2122; were secured.

Premier Vixen Y22 is a black and

polled daughter of Premier Guardian V77 and Premier Vixen V13, with four daughters (three polled and one scurred) of this cow acquired by Mr Martin.

The other purchase was a French pure daughter of Billabong Lancelot and Ardenvale Lavinia, Arkhade Magritte Q10, with two daughters also purchased.

Mr Martin said he acquired these particular cow families because of their outstanding traits including marbling (IMF) percentages as high

According to Mrs Smith, the new sires they have purchased over the past five years have had a huge impact on the Glenellerslie herd, producing dark and muscular bulls with plenty of size and weight for age.

The 2016 offering will include sons of Bingeberry Trailblazer, Mawarra Youngster and Warwick Court Electric, along with the first progeny of Kaludah Kyle.

The polled offering includes the last sons of Hal and Chisel plus the first by Braybook Grenadier.

GLENROWAN-based Witherswood Angus will once again throw open its gates during this year’s Beef Week as stud principals John and Joan Woodruff and stud manager Ian Peake look forward to engaging with their visitors to discuss both their own and their clients’ programs.

On Friday, January 29 – Day 3 of Beef Week – Witherswood will have a selection of bulls, cows and calves on display, as well as heifers that have taken part in the 2016 Beef Week Heifer Challenge.

On sale will be sons of New Zealand sire Maturi Reallity EFC Compliment, Thomas Up River, Broken Bow and the stud’s specialist low birth weight bull,

Booroomooka Astron.

Also on display will be Witherswood’s two newly purchased record breaking sires, Millah Murrah Kingdom K35 and Millah Murrah Klooney K45.

Both bulls have been out with cows since their arrival in early November and Mr Woodruff said the opportunity is there for people to look at these bulls before they return to their semen collection centre after their Beef Week Open Day. Witherswood Angus’ breeding herd has been developed using the best genetics, both Australian and imported, and the use of AI and ET has enabled the stud to stay at the forefront of the cattle industry.

The stud’s method has always

been to use superior genetics, with particular emphasis on structure, growth, fertility and muscle.

Structural assessment has always been a major part of its program.

“We welcome all visitors and clients to see us and talk to us to discuss their programs and also our stud manager Ian is more than happy to talk to people,” Mr Woodruff said.

“Ian has so much experience in the cattle industry and he is always interested in hearing about what other beef producers are doing and to discuss what we are doing here at Witherswood.

BEECHWORTH Poll Hereford breeders Rex, Trish and Narelle Forrest are once again set to welcome visitors at Rosstulla for the 2016 Beef Week event.

Situated on the edge of town, the Forrest family have participated in Beef Week since its inception.

“We have only missed two Beef Week Open Days since it began,” said stud principal Rex Forrest.

“In 1999 we didn’t enter due to a family member’s ill health and in 2003 we were a last minute withdrawal because of the Beechworth fires.”

Mr Forrest said a range of the stud’s bloodlines will be on display this year and among the AI calves will be some “very good progeny” of Warrensville The Don H51.

“We will be offering some bulls for private sale and also displaying a number of very good in-calf rising three-year old heifers by Otapawa Spark 3060 (AI) Imp NZ; Wrattenbullie Corby and Rosstulla Choice C77,” he said.

“We are delighted to

introduce our new stud sire Wrattenbullie Jolly, bred by the Davies family at Naracoorte in South Australia.

“Sired by Yavenvale Einstein E344, Jolly has been tested 98 per cent homozygous poll, is a heifer’s first calf and his grandmother is breeding exceptionally well.

“Trish and I saw the bull when we visited Wrattenbullie when in South Australia last February and she and Narelle went back to The Diamond Sale at Frances in March and made the purchase.

Mr Forrest said that with the immediate future for the cattle industry looking promising, he is optimistic and encourages cattle breeders to “get out and about for Beef Week”.

“We are very pleased to host a couple of the Beef Week sponsors who intend to have a display at Rosstulla on the day.”

HEATHERINGTON Park Poll Hereford Cattle Stud will once again be participating in 2016 Beef Week where a selection of the stud’s livestock will be on display for prospective buyers.

The Allendale-based stud’s feature sale bulls will be on show and available for sale on the day along with a sample of its breeding females, yearling bulls and heifers, and recently weaned calves.

Heatherington Park’s sale bulls are by Allendale Robin Hood D.194 which was purchased at the 2010 Dubbo National in partnership with the Ke Warra stud.

He is out of the great Fancy U.5 cow that has produced all the Robin Hood bulls, including a $30,000 Dubbo Senior Champion, and a grandson sold for $22,000 at Dubbo in 2010.

A paternal brother of D.194 also sold for $22,000 in 2011 and a son sold for $10,000 in 2012.

According to stud principal Philip Gay, the sale bulls are all weaned in early January each year when they are eight to 10 months old.

“The 2013 and 2014 weaning weights of bull calves, sired by Robin Hood D.194, averaged more than 400 kilograms, with a top of 448 kilograms,” he said.

“These calves receive no supplementary feeding, prior to weaning, and the 2016 sale bulls average 760 kilograms at 18 to 20 months.

“D.194 has excellent Breedplan EBVs with low birthweight and high milk, growth and muscle,” Mr Gay said.

Mistletoe introduces pure polled genetics into Limousin herd MORE than two decades ago Mistletoe Limousin was founded on a French pure embryo imported from Canada.

Many French pure sires later, Mistletoe Limousin has entrenched the attributes of docility, ease of calving, milk, fertility and growth into the herd.

Stud principal Denis O’Connor said that with French pure polled genetics now available, Mistletoe has embarked on a program that has introduced the polled gene into the herd.

“Sires such as SVL Polled Exclusive, Jim Dandie and Cyan Po, while being polled have also the desirable traits of calving ease, docility, growth and fat cover.

“The tried and true French sires (Ionesco, Dauphin, Ozeus) have continued to be used because of their true-to-type breeding and proven track records,” Mr O’Connor said.

Situated in the fertile Greta farming area, Mistletoe is within 20 minutes from the Hume Freeway whether approaching from the Melbourne side (Benalla exit) or the northern side (Wangaratta exit).

For more than a decade, Beef Week has been an important marketing tool to promote Mistletoe Limousin cattle and this year the stud will be open on Day 3 of the event on Friday, January 29.

“Visitors are always made welcome at Mistletoe Limousin as we are proud to display our cattle for all to see,” Mr O’Connor said.

“We have continued to breed the excellent Limousin attributes that enable

the commercial producer to improve their income by taking advantage of the benefits that Limousin brings to all breeding programs.

“We not only provide hybrid vigour to progeny when crossed with other breeds, but also the Limousin advantage of less waste, more valuable cuts of meat and ability to thrive on pasture with minimal supplementary feeding,” he said.

He added that Limousin-infused progeny show a true advantage especially in the female section (50 per cent of your progeny) where price per kilogram for heifers is equal to or only slightly less than the steer portion.

This year Mistletoe will have twoyear old bulls, 18 month old bulls and weaner bulls on display. There will also be a selection of cows and calves, with cows due to calve in the autumn.

Sons and daughters of dams will be able to be inspected to show the consistency of breeding. Groups of animals by the same sire can also be inspected.

In 2015 Kanimbla females won supreme exhibit in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne multiple times and in the past three years the stud’s heifers have won grand champion at the Hereford Junior National, while also having come third in the Miss World Hereford competition, scoring a trip to Fort Worth, Texas.

Kanimbla’s stud principals see showing as a way of observing trends in seedstock and as a reference point with how their herd is developing.

Goulburn Broken Authority grants for stock containment area now available FARMERS in the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority region can now access grants to establish stock containment areas to help manage their

livestock in the dry conditions.

Grants of up to $2000 are available to farmers to assist with implementing this valuable management tool after $500,000 was allocated from the recently

launched drought package to cofund stock containment areas.

Stock containment areas enable farmers to fence off part of the farm to hold, feed and water livestock in tough conditions such

as drought and after a bushfire.

These areas deliver a range of benefits during droughts including minimising soil erosion, enabling faster pasture recovery, limiting the spread of weeds and allowing for

good stock management.

Advice, assessment and prioritisation of suitable sites for stock containment areas will be provided by the Department of Economic Development, Jobs,

Transport and Resources through the Drought Extension Program.

Program guidelines including eligibility criteria are available at www.agriculture.vic.gov.au/ drought.

Aussie Pumps increases production AUSTRALIA’S leading portable engine driven pump builder Aussie Pumps has dramatically ramped up production of Kubota diesel powered fire pumps for what looks like a catastrophic fire season ahead.

Farm insurance covers not only the farm machinery, tools and equipment but house and contents, fencing and livestock in the event of loss due to bush or grassfire.

“Unfortunately, underinsurance is common.

“People often underestimate the value of their property and equipment and how much it would cost to replace things like outbuildings, fences and machinery after a fire.

“Many farm fences were built by hand decades ago and materials and

labour costs are much higher now.

“We recommend getting a quote from local contractors to find out the true value of what it would cost to replace fencing and buildings after a fire,” Mr Northey added.

Other things to consider are whether any new machinery has been purchased for the farm since the insurance was last reviewed, what the stock levels are and whether you need to be covered for stored feed.

“RACV urges Victorians living in fire-prone areas to make sure they have a carefully planned and rehearsed bushfire plan and to enact it as needed,” Mr Northey said.

The Country Fire Authority (CFA) provides comprehensive advice on how to learn more about high-risk bushfire areas, how to prepare your property for the bushfire season and how to create a bushfire plan to keep you and your family safe.

“Victoria is one of the world’s highest-risk areas for bushfire,” Mr Northey said.

“CFA is the expert authority and we urge everyone to make use of its resources.

“On its website, you can download a free FireReady app for smartphones and tablet computers that provides information about what to do during a fire and weather warnings.”

VICTORIAN farmers should consider the value of their properties and equipment as they prepare for a fire season that could be one of the worst in recent years warns the RACV. Lower-than-average rainfall during winter and spring has left much of the state tinder dry.

With hot conditions forecast for the summer, all areas of Victoria are at risk of bushfire.

RACV general manager insurance Paul Northey urged farmers to spend some time to do a stocktake of their business to ensure properties and equipment are adequately insured, well before any fire threat is imminent.

“Once a fire starts it is too late to update your policy or take out insurance,” he said.

“We encourage property owners to review their cover and discuss any issues with your insurer as soon as possible.

“There is research to suggest that underinsurance can be an incentive to stay and defend a property and that’s the last thing we want to see.

“As difficult as it is to leave a home early – especially when the property is also your livelihood - it is the only choice that can guarantee the safety of you and your family.

“Knowing that your home and contents as well as your farming business, stock and equipment are adequately insured can help offer some peace of mind in a difficult

AGENTS and farmers are beaming with excitement at the prospects expected to come from the Wangaratta Livestock Exchange complex into 2016 and beyond.

A $3.7 million roofing upgrade to the facility will be completed by this monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s blue ribbon weaner cattle sale, but there are two views of how the facility should be managed into the future, despite proďŹ table returns last year.

Over recent years a campaign to bring the facility up to OH&S and animal welfare standards secured the funding and with the rooďŹ ng works that took place in 2015, the yards have still managed to turn over $36 million.

Cattle prices reached record top ďŹ gures in 2015, with averages up 40 per cent.

However, council has confirmed its intention to lease the saleyards out to a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;producers-based cooperativeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

This would involve council helping establish a shareholders co-operative that has a broad ownership base of 100 to 150 members.

One thing the upgrade wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t guarantee is cattle numbersâ&#x20AC;Ś we believe the thing that will shore up cattle numbers in the most efďŹ cient way is the co-operative proposed.

But local stock agent Vincent McKenzie said for a positive return of $600,000 in yarding fees per year to grow, the facility needs to maintain its current model of management. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is no risk of the saleyards operation failing under its current management structure of being operated by council,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But there is a risk of it going south under a co-operative if you have 100 farmers in a room and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all wanting to run it their way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The saleyards are very successful the way they are now and there is no reason it should change,â&#x20AC;?

Mr McKenzie said.

He called on the council to wait until after a new council is elected in October 2016 before making any decisions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If it does change it should be the ratepayers who choose to change it, not unelected administrators,â&#x20AC;? Mr McKenzie said.

Council expects a community meeting will be held early this year for people to express their interest in the co-operative.

Large farming group grasps new fertiliser application setup

EFFICIENT FERTILISING: The latest Tow and Fert product is the modular Multi 1200 model which can be configured to suit each operator.

ENGINEERING company Tow and Farm has adapted its Tow & Fert system to suit large farming operations requiring portability and versatility when fertilising land.

Tow and Fert has been improving and perfecting fertiliser handling and application technology for the past seven years.

The latest product is the modular Multi 1200 model which can be configured from just $19,900 and can add on wheels, 24 metre booms or a crane to suit each operator.

Each module can be bolted on later down the track if the operatorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s requirements change.

The Hopkins Farming Group (HFG) in Manawatu, New Zealand have had the Tow and Fert for just three months and have covered more than 1000 hectares (ha) across six of their properties.

They calculated an application cost of only $15 per ha (including labour, tractor running costs and depreciation) for applying urea and progib compared to $30 per ha using a spraying contractor who could only apply progib.

This is a direct bottom line saving of $15,000, over 1000ha, which means Tow and Fert will have a 100 per cent payback in less than six months and provide a substantial ongoing saving.

Due to its ability to undertake a one-pass application with multiple fertilisers, growth stimulants and selective sprays, the Tow and Fert can cut down your application costs considerably.

This is unique to typical fertiliser spreaders or sprayers as the Tow and Fert is mixing everything evenly in water with no pre-blending needed.

HFG have set up a Tow and Fert with a front and rear tank totalling 2500 litres which can comfortably cover up to 100 ha per day.

Rather than doing separate applications of urea and gibberellic acid, HFG are applying urea in the Tow and Fert, adding progib and doing one pass which has dramatically reduced tractor running costs and staff labour.

The Tow and Fert has patented intank agitation and a fully recirculating boom system, which means you can mix and apply fine particle fertiliser

in a suspension with no blockages occurring.

There are numerous university research papers that show the benefit of foliar applied nitrogen to rye-grass and the proof of reducing the nitrogen input as a liquid form and growing the same amount of grass.

Likewise, there is proven research around solid fertiliser ground to a fine particle to be much more soil available.

A common sight when applying lime in a typical spreader is to see all the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;finesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; drifting away â&#x20AC;&#x201C; these â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;finesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; are the most beneficial and readily available to the soil and can be harnessed when applied in a suspension.

“Withholding periods can apply to harvest, grazing and cutting for stockfeed.

“In some cases there may be a total ban on feeding the crop or its stubble to animals,” Mr Field said.

He added that the Victorian Government also encourages the use of Commodity Vendor Declarations (CVD) when selling any stockfeed.

“These ensure communication between the seller and buyer is clear and ensures that stockfeed is fit for purpose.”

CVD forms can be obtained from Meat & Livestock Australia and are essential to ensure that National Vendor Declarations can be adequately completed when selling livestock.

FARMERS faced a difficult year last year with down turns in milk prices and unseasonal rain patterns.

What were potentially very good grain crops west of the Goulburn Valley Highway, ended up as rolled silage or cereal hay.

The Murrumbidgee valley seems to have had the best of spring rain.

The season has been made more challenging by the Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder (CEWH) running environment water into December 2015.

Some real analysis of the benefit to flora and fauna needs to be done.

Modernisation is great, but as farmers there is no control over input of delivery charges.

No one will work for any profit.

Upcoming decisions will impact dairy production – whether it is climate change or cyclic sunspot activity, I don’t know, but having no control on your business inputs can only lead to disaster.

On the news there is talk that salt crocodiles will move south to the Brisbane River if the current heat and climate continues.

Maybe it is time to move irrigation up river to the fertile valleys, with no delivery charges and higher rainfall.

If only 50 per cent of this water was transferred into the Murray Vic system at $230 then some $5.75 million would have been in farmers’ hands along the Kiewa and Ovens systems.

Further as is happening in the Broken catchment, irrigators are now eligible for on-farm infrastructure grants.

The lack of eligibility for those in the Kiewa and Ovens is delaying dairy production.

This is not a level playing field.

With land and proven dairy production not being developed, it is time to review the Victorian rules of inter-valley trade.

Failed crops can be a stockfeed risk VICTORIAN growers are being reminded of the importance of observing withholding periods when dealing with failed crops.

State-wide chemicals specialist from the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR) Steven Field said due to dry seasonal conditions, there has been an increase in growers cutting or grazing failed crops.

“Grazing or cutting failed crops may not be appropriate if certain types of chemicals have been applied,” he said.

“The withholding period of chemicals applied to the crop previously, even pre-emergents should be evaluated to ensure that any stockfeed is fit for purpose and free of unacceptable residues.

“Withholding periods refer to the amount of time that

Farm insurance and you UNDERINSURANCE is a major risk across the world.

Insurance cover is only effective if it matches the full range of activities that a company is undertaking.

“Which is why it is really important for companies to be vigilant and keep their business insurance policies up to date,” said John Houghton from Elders Insurance Wangaratta.

The sheer scope of underinsurance has been highlighted by recent figures from Swiss Re. The company’s latest study on this issue found that general property underinsurance makes up 0.19 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).

While this may sound like a small amount, it represents $2.7 billion in assets that are currently unprotected by the owner’s insurance policy.

Globally, underinsurance is on the rise too, recording steady growth since the 1970s.

Since then the percentage of global GDP that is underinsured has nearly tripled.

The study also highlighted the range of potential causes behind underinsurance - factors that every business will need to be aware of.

According to the report there are different reasons for

underinsurance, including factors like perception of risk, insurance knowledge, affordability, reliance on government post-disaster relief, lack of trust in insurers, and limited access and ease of doing business.

Undervaluation of assets due to lack of information and awareness is another contributing factor.

“While every business will need to be thinking about the risk of underinsurance, there are some sectors that are more at risk than others,” Mr Houghton said.

“Environmental factors were picked by the report as a major issue that will affect policy holders, and this is certainly true for the agricultural sector.

“Ensuring that policies like crop insurance and farm insurance have been updated will certainly help farmers keep their costs down.

“Underinsurance is clearly an issue that all businesses will need to be aware of, but it’s also one that’s easy to fix.

“Just make sure you are regularly reviewing your insurance policies, as this will give your company the best chance of staying safe when the worst happens,” he said.

We bought the property in 1988 to establish a cherry farm in a tranquil valley surrounded by hills in the most beautiful part of North East Victoria.

The property is the original Mt Bruno property that was established in the mid-1800s by an Italian Count by the name of Bruno.

The Count was commissioned to produce mulberry trees for the production of silk worms but that venture did not succeed.

Our home is a 125 year old brick dwelling made from bricks from what was then the local brick factory in Thoona our nearest town.

When we purchased the property it had established wine grapes and olive trees which were planted by a Spanish gentleman in the late 1960s.

How long have you been a farmer?

I really did not consider myself a farmer until I became involved with Australian Women in Agriculture.

The women I met there made me realise that I was not just a farmer’s wife. My turning point was after I was able to attend an International Conference for Farming Women.

Tell us about your family.

My husband has always been a farmer and is third generation.

My children are pursuing careers of their own outside farming and although my grandson says he wants to be a farmer, I think he is now beginning a career in technology, so I think that idea will get lost in the city.

Best advice or farming tip you have ever received?

I hear a lot of advice from both industry and farming friends, but I think the best advice is that you don’t count your success until it is in the bank.

Both are serious but RDA is much more serious than LDA as the abomasum becomes distended and can twist on its axis and lead to loss of blood supply and subsequent tissue death.

Clinical signs include inappetance and loss of condition. In dairy situations milk production drops off considerably.

Usually animals with displaced abomasums will have a normal temperature (unlike in other conditions like mastitis or uterine infection that can also affect appetite and milk production).

Diagnosis of an LDA or RDA is by listening to the sides of the abdomen with a stethoscope while concurrently flicking the side of the abdomen with a finger.

If the abomasum is displaced there will be a hollow noise (accumulated gas) in an area where there shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be (either on the left or right side).

Correction is unfortunately an involved process with surgery to pull the abomasum back into the right position and suturing it in place so it canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t move again. Prognosis after surgery is however usually good if the displacement is detected early and corrected early.

The cow has a somewhat complex digestive system to allow it to breakdown and absorb nutrients from the grass that it eats.

There are 4 different stomachs in a chain and each does a different job in the digestion and absorbtion process. These 4 stomachs are the reticulum, rumen, omasum and abomasum.

The abomasum usually sits below the rumen and slightly to the right hand side. It is only loosely suspended by the omentum and sometimes its position can move with significant consequences for the cow.

The abomasum can displace to the right â&#x20AC;&#x201C; RDA - or to the left â&#x20AC;&#x201C; LDA. Displaced abomasum is most prevalent in high producing dairy cattle but it can happen in beef cattle.

The cause of displacement is multifactorial. Pregnancy, low blood calcium (milk fever), diseases like uterine infection or mastitis and finally high concentrate, low roughage diets for dairy cattle are thought to reduce motility in the rumen and abomasum which contributes to displacement.

Consequently most displaced abomasums are seen within 1 month of a cow giving birth. LDA is more common than RDA by a factor of thirty to one.
