CHARLIE Wilcox has always felt a deep connection to the Australian bush.

“I’m a big believer in the indigenous view in that I feel part of the land,” he said.

He counts cooking food on open coals in the bush, and accompanying his father John in the hills of Indigo Shire prospecting for gold among his most cherished childhood memories.

“I spent a lot of time out in the bush, and it gave me a real sense of confidence, while also giving me the urge to do more adventurous things and be outdoors,” Charlie said.

Today he runs his own business, alongside wife Tory, where he shares the knowledge he has learned about surviving in the elements.

And as the summer weather is luring more people to enjoy bushwalks, birdwatching and other outdoor activities, Charlie wants to dispel the myths that surviving in the outdoors needs to be some kind of frenetic, ‘Man vs Wild’ activity.

Rather, he said, it is all a matter of being aware of your surroundings and environment, establishing priorities for survival and steadily working towards them.

“If you stay calm and create a plan, you don’t make mistakes,” Charlie said.

He said the five priorities were shelter (avoiding the elements), signalling (to help people find you), water, warmth and food. continued page |

What’s in your garden: Mainly, lots of natives and roses.

What do you enjoy about gardening: It’s fun and relaxing, and I can always add things. I love flowers.

Favorite plant in your garden: Out in my “loony garden”, a section of the garden featuring lots of recycled objects, such as bicycles, toilets and baths, that I

have established plants in.

I love to sit out there and have a coffee.

Water saving/ conservation tip: I primarily plant natives, as they use less water, and I also only water in the evenings.

Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Keep it tidy, and plant natives as they are mainly self sustaining and low maintenance.

HAVING birds in the garden is one of nature’s delights.

With their color and sweet songs, they bring beauty to a garden.

Birds help with pest control as they eat a variety of insects, including aphids, mosquitoes, spiders and other bugs.

The nectar feeders pollinate flowers and the seed eating sparrows and finches help with weed control by eating weed seeds.

But birds can be a problem in the garden, especially when they eat the fruits and vegetables lovingly nurtured by gardeners.

The best way to protect trees and plants from bird attack is to erect a physical barrier or deter them.

Fruit trees, vines and bushes can be covered with netting which can be draped over the plant or over a frame.

A simple box frame can be made from tall stakes, bamboo poles or fence posts. Use white netting so the birds can see it.

Birds have difficulty seeing black netting and may get caught in it.

The purpose of netting is to prevent birds eating the fruit, not to catch birds.

To protect the veggie garden use wire or bamboo hoops to make a frame to support netting to cover seedlings.

To protect newly sown seeds, cover the seedbed with chicken wire to prevent birds scratching.

Place scarecrows, artificial owls and hawks, snakes and cats to scare the birds away.

Try hanging balloons, wind socks, wind chimes, streamers, kites, tin pie plates, plastic shopping bags, or CDs in and around the garden on posts, but move them every few days to keep the birds scared.

Birds can also be a pest in ornamental gardens by scratching and spreading mulch, often onto garden paths or over small plants.

Along pathways, use chicken wire to make a small fence, or lay over the mulch to prevent the birds digging and scratching.

Another option is to plant a living border, like mondo grass, along the edge.

Flea eggs tend to hatch faster in warmer weather, leading to large flea burdens.

There are many flea products available on the market to treat fleas in cats and dogs, and the most effective products tend to be the monthly spot on treatments available from vet clinics, pet shops and supermarkets.

These products are generally very effective and safe if used correctly.

Owners need to be aware, however, that while some of these products are safe for cats and dogs, there are also some “dog only� products which if used on a cat are extremely poisonous.

This product is safe for use on dogs, but if used on a cat can cause tremors, convulsions, coma and death.

When buying flea treatments for your cats please check the labelling carefully and store products in their boxes after opening as the labelling on individual tubes may be small and difficult to read.

67cm The Murray River at Bundalong Bardi grubs Daymn caught this fish on the first day of cod opening after 30 minutes during a fishing trip with stepdad Craig Bihun, and was the only one of the two to catch a keeper.

HAPPY ANGLER: Jayden Blackshaw shows the nice Murray cod he caught in the Ovens River upstream of Wangaratta on a green two piece hard body lure. He has been catching cod on just about every outing this season.

WELL the Murray cod reports have been flowing in as strong as a flooded river.

It doesn’t seem to matter where you go at the moment the cod are well and truly on the bite.

December has always been my favorite month to catch Murray cod.

The Ovens and King rivers have seen a lot of fishing pressure since the season opened, and most people have been catching cod, usually multiple amounts, but mainly small fish.

A few larger fish have turned up locally including at least one that I know of which was over a metre long, downstream closer to Bundalong.

As long as people play by the rules and release their undersize and oversize Murray cod the Ovens and King rivers will stand up well to the fishing pressure.

Remember, not only is there a minimum size limit of 60cm on Murray cod in Victoria, there is also a maximum size limit of 100cm, to ensure the larger breeding fish are released.

Jeff Baade from Lake Eildon boat cruises has told me there have been quite a few redfin and yellowbelly caught in the Bonnie Doon area of Lake Eildon recently.

Jeff also said there has been quite a sharp increase in Murray cod captures in recent times as well, with more cod being caught this season than in previous seasons.

Is Lake Eildon shaping up to be the Victorian equivalent of Blowering Dam in NSW which is known for its monster Murray cod?

Back to the redfin, and I have had a few people telling me they have been to Bonnie Doon recently and not caught any redfin, then last week I received a photo from Ducky Day of some absolute thumpers that he had caught at Bonnie Doon.

The trick with redfin is to move around a lot and search for the schools of fish.

They are there if you persevere - just as Ducky has proven.

DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting.

NOW I’m not really expecting much sympathy from you all as I realise what I’m about to whinge over is a very ‘First World’ problem, but here we go.

You see, the spouse and I are about to head off on holidays to Thailand.

Yes, 10 idyllic days at a lovely resort on the island of Kho Samui (I note you are not feeling sorry for me yet. But wait, I’ll get to it…).

Over the past several months, a girlfriend and I have been planning this trip.

We decided (without much help from the boys) on the location.

I say, ‘without much help’ because basically the location was chosen by a process of elimination.

We bandied around potential places and the spouses vetoed them one by one.

In the end, we just said: “That’s it. We’re going to Koh Samui.”

And to our surprise – even though it was one of the locations they’d earlier poo-hooed - they just nodded agreeably.

Pity we didn’t just try the assertive approach in the first place.

Well anyway, so started the organisation and planning.

While the spice (my invented word for more than one spouse) coasted along with their day to day lives, my friend and I have been beavering away in the background making sure we’ve booked accommodation, flights, travel insurance and car parking.

We’ve sorted itineraries, medications, toiletries, lotions, potions and Thai Baht.

We’ve washed, ironed and packed clothes.

We’ve notified banks and the government’s Smart Traveller website.

I’ve booked the dogs into ‘Juvey’ (our word for the kennel they will be incarcerated in for the next fortnight).

Their accommodation comes complete with air conditioned rooms and a doggy verandah where they can watch, bark and sniff the air with their fellow inmates.

I know it seems like an extravagance to pay a small fortune for your dogs to be looked after, but given ours are not the easiest lads to care

And besides, it’s peace of mind to know they are being well cared for by people who understand dogs (so you’re still not sorry for me yet? Hmph).

Well, anyway, suffice to say, it’s a bit of a mission getting organised for overseas travel, as I’m sure many of you can attest.

Not that the spouse would agree, I’m sure.

From his perspective, the organising involves chucking a few things in his bag and driving to the airport.

To illustrate this point I will describe this morning’s helpfulness.

On the eve of our departure, I’m sitting at the kitchen table filling in our departure cards.

It’s important that we do this now, as last time we travelled overseas, we forgot and ended up frantically doing it on our laps in the customs area of the airport while chaos reigned around us.

I decided to avoid that situation by being prepared this time.

Well, anyway, the spouse announces he might duck to the supermarket to buy some nice bread for lunch.

I suggest to him that he might also grab some laundry spray, so I can clean up an item of clothing I’m intending to take on holiday.

“Just cause I’m going to the supermarket, doesn’t mean I want to do all your shopping,” he remarks grumpily.

Well thank you for that, Mr Helpful.

“Ok,” I say, “How about you organise your own Departure Card then, while I make a second trip to the supermarket for one item? That makes sense.

“Oh, and while you’re at it, next time you want to go on holiday, you can organise everything.”

“Was it Sard Spray you wanted?” he asks making for the door with a sheepish grin.

Well, may you smile, Mr Old Spice.

And yes, I know. I’m lucky to have such First World problems.

Or I hope it has.

I just love a nice quiche and salad for lunch, and often for dinner.

This is a roast veggie one, with pumpkin, zucchini, red pepper and fresh spinach; you can add what you have in the fridge.

Method Use a loose-based fluted tin.

Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius.

Spray quiche pan with the oil, then line with the puff pastry (you may have to overlap the pastry if one sheet does not completely cover the whole tin).

Pop in the freezer for 15 minutes while you make up the egg mixture.

Take the lined tin out of the freezer, start to layer first with grated cheese, then with the spinach, then with your roasted vegetables, leaving the roasted red capsicum until last to arrange on the top after the egg

SG Watson dies, 1891 ON December 11, 1891, the man who was probably the North East’s first millionaire died.

At one time or another, Sydney G Watson seemed to own just about all the best land in the Upper Murray, and his list of properties is a roll call of familiar place names today – Tintaldra, Walwa and Corryong.

One of his eccentricities was keeping an oak coffin in his study, and when he died, aged 75, he was carried from his study in the coffin, for an interment on Walwa station.

Combine eggs and cream together with salt and pepper; pour over the quiche, top with your sliced capsicum.

Place on the lower shelf of the oven, and bake for 35-40 minutes or until golden and just set.

Leave to cool before removing from the tin.

Serve with a salad.

FINDING an appropriate Christmas present which is also a bargain is one of the simple joys of the season and I found a cracker this week.

It was one of those whizz bang corkscrews which works without having to work up a sweat or hold the bottle between the knees.

It used to be dangerous when the less coordinated among us were on the other end of a waiter’s friend, elbows akimbo and often close to whacking the person next door in the jaw.

Pity this new luxury item is not going to get the work out it once would have, which in retrospect might be why it was such a bargain.

Anyway the bloke who is getting it won’t mind because it’s coming with La Cantina Tempranillo so he’ll be able to use it.

TYPE 2 Diabetes (T2D) and insulin resistance are classified as diseases of lifestyle and diet habits.

Our western diet is laden with refined white carbohydrates, saturated fats, sugars, foods with high glycemic loads/indexes with a lifestyle that is sedentary and void of fibre and healthy oils.

We are slowly but surely eating ourselves to our demise.

Insulin resistance or T2D occur when the pancreas becomes tired of secreting insulin to combat glucose found in the blood, leading to a reduced amount of insulin and an increasing amount of glucose in the blood.

This excess glucose is then stored as fat, commonly around the tummy where the majority of our organs are.

This central obesity or weight gain increases your risk factor of developing T2D or insulin resistance.

A family history of cardiovascular disease or diabetes, elevated triglycerides, gestational diabetes, increased BP, central obesity; polycystic ovarian syndrome and a sedentary lifestyle all increase your risk of developing T2D.

SO the time has come for you to consider a change of employment and you have been scanning the media for something to suit your lifestyle and skills.

You have completed a resume’ and been selected for an interview - so what are they likely to ask and have you prepared yourself for the unexpected?

Probably the opening question will be along the lines “can you tell us a little about yourself” or “why do you wish to work for us?”

Your reply will set the tone for the rest of the interview so you need to be prepared, as should you stumble over the answer it will not look good in the final selection.

I suppose the interviewer is asking the question for two reasons: one to try and lighten the mood and the second to get a sense of the person being interviewed.

As such the employer will be looking for a confident answer that will show you are interested in the position, and the skills you can bring to the organisation.

If you can prove yourself, no matter what the job, you will end up getting the job you want by being flexible.

Having the right attitude and showing the employer what you’re made of will certainly work in your favor.

Give a brief summary of how your career has been progressing and highlight anything you think stands out.

This should give you the opportunity to show off any career achievements, but refrain from going through your resume in detail as the last five years is the important bit to a new employer and I am sure the interviewer will have a copy in front of him/her.

Remain engaged with the interviewer, remember to smile and maintain eye contact.

If the interviewer likes what is being said, your all-important body language could set the tone for a successful interview.

“Job seekers need to think about what they are doing to contribute to the organisation, not just what they are going to get out of the new position that they will be filling,” he said.

At the interview, try and avoid answering a question too personally; instead focus on your business achievements.

Don’t try to be someone you’re not and don’t overthink the answer.

Most positions will have a couple of interviews, usually of around 30 minutes each, so keep the answer short.

There will be plenty of time to expand on anything the interviewer would like to hear more about.

Keep your answer friendly because the last thing would be to come across as a defensive or negative person.

Have the employer wanting to know more not less, and be as confident as you can, as a job interview is one of the few times a person has a chance to sell themselves.

Importantly, focus on your strengths and avoid sounding like you know everything.

In my career I employed many, and I was always interested in what their handwriting was like as I asked for their resume’ to be handwritten, how they dressed and whether they polished their shoes.

Dress was important and whilst I respected a person’s style of dress I believe wearing outlandish clothes such as a bright red tie or orange trousers were not what you should wear to impress an employer.
