CHARLIE Wilcox has always felt a deep connection to the Australian bush. “I’m a big believer in the indigenous view in that I feel part of the land,” he said. He counts cooking food on open coals in the bush, and accompanying his father John in the hills of Indigo Shire prospecting for gold among his most cherished childhood memories. “I spent a lot of time out in the bush, and it gave me a real sense of confidence, while also giving me the urge to do more adventurous things and be outdoors,” Charlie said. Today he runs his own business, alongside wife Tory, where he shares the knowledge he has learned about surviving in the elements. And as the summer weather is luring more people to enjoy bushwalks, birdwatching and other outdoor activities, Charlie wants to dispel the myths that surviving in the outdoors needs to be some kind of frenetic, ‘Man vs Wild’ activity. Rather, he said, it is all a matter of being aware of your surroundings and environment, establishing priorities for survival and steadily working towards them. “If you stay calm and create a plan, you don’t make mistakes,” Charlie said. He said the five priorities were shelter (avoiding the elements), signalling (to help people find you), water, warmth and food. continued page |
