TO hear the bubbly giggle of youngster Eva Siperki, or see the contented smile of Wangaratta man Phillip Woodward, is testament to the transformation speech pathology can have on everyday lives.

Eva began coming to Northeast Health Wangaratta speech pathologist Courtney Ward-Jackson about a year ago.

She had just begun kindergarten, and her nerves about the process underlined the fact she was developing a stutter.

“But once we started doing the therapy, everybody noticed the difference,” said her mum Wendy, noting her daughter was now a confident and bouncy four year old, prepared for beginning school.

Speech pathology work can also give older members of the community a new lease on life.

A mystery illness late last year not only left Phillip Woodward without the use of his right hand, it also robbed him of speech – a loss that exhausted him and led him to avoid social situations.

“I could barely even manage a whisper,” he said.

After spending time in hospital in Melbourne, and having treatments including Botox injections for his vocal cords, Mr Woodward began speech therapy on the road to recovery, coupling therapy sessions with commitment to practicing vocal exercises at home. continued page |

Ornamental grasses

AS a population we have increased our total fat consumption by over 15 per cent (just about every fat containing product on our supermarket shelves has a ‘no’ or ‘low’ fat version).

The irony of this is that the general population has increased its weight by 30 per cent or more.

What you may not have heard is that this fat gain can be caused not only by fat, but by sugar and all these ‘low’ or ‘no’ fat products are high in sugar.

So we have replaced one fat causing product with another.

Our body is very clever, and when we eat breads, cereals, juice, sweets, cakes, cordials, pasta and rice, these foods enter our body to be broken down into sugar and these are stored in our body as fat.

When we eat a lot of these foods, our blood sugar levels can swing and we can get a case of ‘3 oclockitis’.

This is where you feel tired, light headed, crave sugar and

loose concentration, normally at 3pm or after dinner, you may even wake up with ‘3 oclockitis’.

So, if we want to lose weight we need to cut out the fried foods, but also the sugary foods - the sweets, soft drinks, sugary cereals and white breads.

We need to replace these with small amounts of quality proteins and lots of vegetables, some fruit and

natural milks, cheese and yoghurts.

We still need some fats to keep us feeling full and to reduce those sugar cravings, but they need to come in the form of olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, fish and natural yoghurts.

When tackling weight loss, you should never feel hungry, light headed or that you are craving sugar – this is the key to a successful program.

Ornamental grasses are easy to grow and require little maintenance.

Some grasses die off in the cooler season and need to be cut back hard in late winter to encourage thick, new spring growth.

Cut them back by two thirds and remove any dry or dead leaves.

In summer the grasses send up their flower heads which can remain on the plants for many months.

Ornamental grasses vary from the low growing Poa with bluish grey foliage to Pennisetum, commonly known as Fountain grass or Foxtails, with showy feathery flowers and fine arching foliage, Lomandra, Carex and Dianella varieties.

Ornamental grasses are suitable for all styles of garden and can be planted as borders, mass planted or planted in garden beds amongst other plants.

They can be used to soften edges or hide unwanted objects or planted in a large pot for an eye catching feature.

ORNAMENTAL grasses have increased in popularity in the last few years, mainly because of the drought.

With little rain and severe water restrictions, many plants struggled with some plants dying.

Gardening trends then changed with gardeners seeking hardier plants suited to the harsher conditions and ornamental grasses were perfect.

Ornamental grasses have been used for many years in streetscape planting because they are tough; tolerating pollution, frosts, high temperatures and dry conditions with little water.

Although, commonly referred to as ornamental grasses, included in this group are the grass-like sedges and rushes.

The difference is in the stems.

Grasses have hollow stems, while sedges have solid angular stems and rushes have solid round stems.

Ornamental grasses prefer full sun, to partial shade in a well-draining soil, as most grasses don’t tolerate wet feet and will rot if the soil is wet for too long.

If drainage is a problem, plant the grasses on a raised mound.

With a lot of help, sure enough, my speech came back again,” he said.

“Now, I have no worries.

“I can get about and talk, that’s the main thing.”

For their part, speech pathologists such as Stacey Bunn and Ms Ward-Jackson find immense satisfaction in their work.

“I love working with kids and working in health – that’s what drove me to speech pathology,” Ms Ward-Jackson said.

“It’s very satisfying.”

“It also helps when your clients are motivated as well,” Ms Bunn said of Mr Woodward’s dedication to his recovery.

At Northeast Health Wangaratta, speech pathologists work with children up to school age and adults over 18.

Ms Ward-Jackson said speech pathologists are found in many different sectors of the community, including schools, hospitals, rehab centres, nursing homes and more,

and their work has a wide ranging impact on the community.

Speech issues can range from stuttering to the effects of developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, brain injuries, stroke and more.

She said speech pathology is used to help not only address communication and speech issues, but health issues such as the ability to eat and swallow, and said millions of Australians are living with speech and swallowing problems every day.

When speech is not possible, Ms Ward-Jackson said speech pathologists can also help establish other forms of communication for their clients, including sign language, written forms of communication, and more.

“Even if it’s a little thing you make a difference with – even a little step in the right direction is always rewarding,” Ms WardJackson said.

This week, August 25-31, marks Speech Pathology Week, with the theme “Start The Conversation” aimed at encouraging the public to think about what life is like for Australians living with a communication problem, as well as how life would change if they were to have a communication difficulty themselves.

“It is estimated that one in five people will experience communication difficulties at some point in their lives,” said Ovens and King Community Health Service speech pathologist Kelsey Graves.

“This can range from mild to very severe, and can impact on the way they participate in family life, the community, education and the workplace.”

Events will be held at Ovens and King Community Health Service to celebrate Speech Pathology Week, including a language play group in Wangaratta and Myrtleford today for $5 per family.

Ovens and King Community Health Service also recently introduced paediatric based speech pathology clinics in the Wangaratta and Alpine regions.

Horse hoof abscesses HOOF abscesses are a very common cause of lameness in horses at this time of the year.

A hoof abscess is an infection inside the horse’s hoof, usually just under the sole of the hoof.

This is extremely painful for the horse and it will usually stand still and be reluctant to move or put any weight on the affected hoof.

Hoof abscesses are caused by bacteria from the environment getting into the hoof through a small crack or hole in the sole of the hoof.

In winter, these abscesses are very common as the constant wet weather softens the hoof allowing the bacteria into the hoof through any small cracks, fissures and sometimes nail holes in the feet.

Abscesses can also occur at any time of the year with puncture wounds, cracking or bruising to the feet.

If your horse is very lame and you suspect an abscess, the vet should be called to treat the abscess.

While waiting, try and move the horse to a dry area, clean out the hoof

and apply a poultice dressing such as Animalintex or Equitex to the sole of the hoof.

Prevention at this time of the year can be difficult as it is so wet and muddy that there is hardly a dry spot anywhere for the horse to stand in most paddocks in this area.

Regular managing of your horse’s feet with trimming or shoeing by the farrier is very important, and cleaning out the feet as often as possible will help.

A good quality hoof oil can be used to help keep the foot in good condition and a good quality diet is important so that the horse grows healthy hooves.

FISHING FOCUS

Make sure you wait for the right time to fish for trout

BY ROB ALEXANDER, WANGARATTA G’DAY everybody, it’s great to be back delivering my weekly fishing report to the North East of this great state via this wonderful newspaper.

As many of you know, or noticed, I took a few months off over winter during the quiet season, and now I am back in business and ready to pump your minds full of fishing information just in time for the upcoming Victorian trout season.

Speaking of the upcoming trout season, please be advised that the Victorian trout season opens on Saturday, September 7.

Quite a lot of people I have spoken to have been of the belief that the season opens this Saturday as it is Father’s Day this Sunday.

This is not the case - the season always opens on the first Saturday in September,

which happens to be the following Saturday, the 7th.

If you are caught fishing for trout this Saturday, August 31, you risk being fined for fishing out of season.

Now to report on some fishing...

It has been extremely quiet recently with very few reports filtering in.

The constant rain and dull weather is not helping.

I have heard reports from the Bonnie Doon area of some nice trout up to 1kg being trolled on pink Tassie Devil lures, and have also heard a few reports of some yellowbelly, otherwise known as golden perch, being caught in the Murray River downstream of Lake Mulwala.

Most of these yellowbelly have been caught on worms, although a few have fallen to extra large deep diving lures by anglers chasing a last minute Murray Cod before the Murray Cod season closes at midnight this Saturday night for three months.

KING DAM: I fished Lake William Hovell for a few hours last Sunday. Although no fish were landed I did hook, and lose two brown trout.

Both fish were hooked on a blue 7gm TT switchblade which I was casting from my kayak. The fishing isn’t the best up there at the moment, but it is ticking over and is certainly a viable option while we wait for the streams to re-open on September 7.

Budget Schmudget WITH our house move coming up soon (and the financial implications of same) we decided last weekend it was time to revisit our household budget (or should I say, the rather ad-hoc method of divvying up our funds that masquerades as a budget!)

To help us with this rather daunting process Number Two Son (aka Little Mr McScrooge) availed us of his fiscal services and set about doing the sums.

Not surprisingly there was quite a lot of admonishing and eye rolling on his part (you may recall from previous articles, this is the kid who apparently inherited my entire share of this grandfather’s Scottish frugality genes as well as those of his two brothers, most of my extended family and the federal government).

I’m sometimes a bit annoyed with myself for not noticing his potential for all things fiscal when he was much younger.

As well as flying porridge aeroplanes into his little mouth in the early years, I could have had him looking over our financial statements and sharing with us his cherub-faced advice on potential shares portfolios.

Well, anyway, the spouse and I learned quite a lot about our spending habits as a result of last weekend’s little budgeting session. Most of it was not good.

Little Mr McScrooge (somewhat smugly, I noted) proceeded to point out the error of our ways.

He calculated all of our outgoings for the year and knocked up a very scary estimate of what we need to be banking each fortnight to cover same.

It was disheartening to realise we tend to live a ‘champagne lifestyle on a beer wage’.

At this rate, we’d be lucky to have enough for a couple of warm XXXX! But perhaps my scariest moment came when Little Mr McScrooge wanted to know about my ‘personal’ expenditures: the little bits and pieces that relate to my personal grooming (i.e. my efforts to stave off my

descent into decrepitude!).

I refer, of course, to hairdressing, pharmaceuticals, chiropractic, podiatry as well as the odd ‘must have’ item of clothing, girls’ lunch or bottle of vino.

This figure was rather daunting and the spouse quickly quipped that we could save a small fortune if I would just let the grey hairs, wrinkles and gnarly toenails have their evil way and also if I banned myself from boutiques and coffee shops.

When my horrified eyebrows finally came back down from the ceiling, I reminded the spouse that, should I indeed (prematurely to my way of thinking) embrace my inevitable ‘maturing’ and give up some of my small joys in life - like catching up with friends - it may well be he who is the first to complain as I am sure to be a very grey and very cranky little duck indeed.

He quickly conceded that perhaps such drastic measures may not be necessary after all and even magnanimously offered to take on the larger percentage of the fortnightly McScrooging effort (phew!).

And so it was that Little Mr McScrooge left on Sunday afternoon satisfied in the knowledge that his previously fiscallychallenged parents were now on a safe path towards financial responsibility.

Shame he didn’t get to us 30 years ago, really.

Although in fairness to us, it was probably he and his siblings that cost us the most money over the years!

Well anyway, we may well have already spent most of the ‘kid’s inheritance’ but I’m still hoping Little Mr McScrooge’s own frugality might mean I’ll at least get a decent nursing home.

But just to be sure, I’m planning to cook him something really nice next time he comes home for a visit.

It’s called ‘insurance.’ See? I know a thing or two after all‌

A view of Bontharambo, 1870 THE observations of the Rev WM Finn of Heidelberg on the North East had been published, and were read with great interest in the district.

The Rev Finn was particularly impressed with the countryside around Dockers Plains, extending through to Tarrawingee.

He commented on the quality of the Riesling made at local property Bontharambo, and the richness of the soil at Dockers Plains, and the astonishing growth of its crops.

THIS curry is from Jamie Oliver.

I don’t know how long I have had it, but when I feel like a curry, I always go to this recipe.

It’s nice and easy and very tasty, it is more spicy than a hot curry, if you are serving it to anyone that doesn’t like their chilli hot, then just go easy on the chilli.

A curry is always best the next day, so make it in advance and let it sit in the fridge, or you can always freeze it for later use, and don’t forget you can also freeze the rice as well.

I serve it with steamed rice, a dollop of yoghurt and papadums.

Method Mix your ginger and your garlic together.

Put them in a bowl that’s big enough to fit all your cubed lamb in.

Add the turmeric, yoghurt and black pepper mix together.

Tip the lamb into the bowl and stir until it’s well coated, then cover and leave overnight in the fridge.

Preheat your oven to 170ËšC. Chop onions and peppers roughly and

SOME people say everything tastes good when it’s crumbed or battered and for the most part it’s hard to disagree.

While I’ll give that freakish concept of deep frying a chocolate bar a big miss, I’ll give a big high five for frying chicken, vegetables and just about anything that comes out of the ocean.

It’s amazing the way tempura batter can transform a humble slice of sweet potato or zucchini into something out of this world, as is tucking into juicy local scallops when they’re battered, deep fried until golden and dunked in sweet and sour sauce.

Recently it was a sushi roll and while the nori wrapped rice was unadulterated, it was moulded around a crispy fried soft shell crab, with all its spidery legs poking out.

Brown Brothers new Moscato and Sauvignon Blanc blend was the drink of choice, and its bright fruity flavor and bit of spritz is sure to make it a hit this summer.

Put the pan you are going to cook the curry in on a medium heat, and add cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and coriander.

Toast until they go a shade darker in color, then pour into a grinder or mortar and pestle, and grind with the dried chillis.

Keep the pan on the heat and add a splash of oil.

Add the whizzed onion and pepper mix, the ground spice mix and the paprika.

Cook over a gentle heat for about 10 minutes, then add the tomatoes, the marinated lamb and one cup of water, and stir well.

When the curry comes to the boil, add salt, cover tightly with a lid and place it in the oven to cook for two hours.

Taste it, add more salt if it needs it.

If it’s too hot, add some more yoghurt to cool it down.

Serve it with your rice; you can garnish it with coriander as well.

he housing crisis is getting in the way of people’s efforts to find a job, according to a report released by Australians for Affordable Housing.

The report shows that efforts to improve the participation rate and lower unemployment are likely impeded by the geographical mismatch of appropriate jobs and housing affordability. “This is a nation wide problem and a responsibility of the Commonwealth Government,� said Joel Pringle, campaign manager for Australians for Affordable Housing. “High rents are putting pressure on many people who are already working, but this research indicates that the housing crisis is also stopping others from being able to access jobs.� “It’s no use expecting someone to take a job if they’ll have to move to somewhere that they can’t afford the rent. “The report identifies the areas of opportunity, where there are a lot of jobs suitable for people leaving unemployment. “By looking at whether rents are

It is now 21 years since compulsory superannuation was introduced into Australia - the last 11 has seen your employer contribute nine per cent of your gross ordinary wage into a nest egg for you at retirement.

Look at your payslip, which should detail your contributions, but if not check your super statement.

Member statements are a rich source of information that should not go into the shredder.

You will receive one at least yearly, although most funds seem to now be sending them out half yearly.

This statement will show the starting balance as well as the ending balance, the contributions paid into the fund, insurance and management costs and the value of investment returns.

But just don’t look at the summary page, look for the detail of the investments that your fund manager has invested your super in, which is usually on another page.

Get a copy of the annual fund booklet or check the website and analyse the pros and cons.

Managed or self-managed funds are sometimes a decision you are trying to make for the long term benefit when you get to retirement age.

I always think the rule of thumb for setting up a self-managed fund is around $200,000.

A figure less than this amount will see the cost of administration eat into the fund and you will battle to produce sufficient revenue to cover the costs of compliance.

Of course we all like to control our destiny, but this is a specialised area which is going to impact on your retirement, so talk to your accountant and ask them to explain the compliance costs associated with a self-managed super fund.

That may be enough for you to stick with your present fund.
