IT took the concern of her friends and family for Wangaratta’s Morgan Bennett to recognise she was suffering from an eating disorder.

During 2011, she was busy and working long hours, and some of those close to her had expressed concern about her health.

But it was not until she began passing in and out of consciousness that she began to realise the true effects of her weight loss – she was living with anorexia nervosa.

A week before her 21st birthday, her mother Judy took her to outpatients and admitted her, and treatment began.

Her condition, combined with body dysmorphia and a constant drive to exercise, was a potent mix.

“I could not see that I’d lost a lot of weight,” she said.

Morgan said that growing up, “I always saw skinny as an ideal”, but added there was no one cause for her illness.

“It doesn’t come on overnight, and it’s not a choice,” she said.

“People say, ‘just eat’, but it’s not that easy.”

In the years that have followed Morgan has had nine hospital admissions, but said she continues to take small steps towards recovery.

For her, planning occasional public outings and expressing her feelings through various art projects are some of her coping strategies.

January in the veggie garden

JANUARY is traditionally hot, but the extreme temperatures of the last few weeks have been a challenge for most gardeners trying to keep up with watering and keeping plants alive and healthy.

With the summer veggie garden brimming with ripe produce, harvest is at its peak with a range of vegetables and fruit.

Salads are the essence of summer with the tomato being the most popular grown plant.

Nothing tastes better than freshly picked home grown tomatoes, combined with leafy lettuce, spinach, cucumber, capsicum, peas, beans, onion and basil.

This applies to zucchini, pumpkin, watermelon and rockmelon as well.

Don’t let these vines grow any longer than 2-3 metres, prune them back to a bud to encourage more flowers and fruit.

Summer is the season for sweet corn which is ready when the tassels brown off.

Check for ripeness by peeling back the husk and sticking a fingernail into a kernel.

A milky liquid should come out when it’s ripe.

For the best and sweetest flavor, pick and eat soon after harvesting.

Rhubarb, berries, cherries, apricots, plums, nectarines, peaches and passionfruit are some of the fruits ripening now.

What’s in your garden: It’s a mixture of native and exotic plants. Anything we plant now is usually native, in order to attract native birds.

My mosaic works are also a feature throughout the garden.

What do you enjoy about gardening: The end result, and the challenge of creating a sustainable garden in this area.

Favorite plant in your garden: My favorite plant is probably

the grevilleas, for their flowers and their ability to attract birds.

Water saving/conservation tip: The garden is kept alive by water from our dam, so we have to plan how we use the water.

We also keep a bucket in a shower and use this water on the garden as well.

Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Mulching, and we’ve found using stones for mulch is more sustainable and less of a fire hazard.

Apples and pears will soon be ready.

Some plants may wilt or suffer scorch in the hot sun and winds with tomatoes literally cooking on the vines.

Try Drought Shield, a new product on the market which is sprayed on the leaves to protect the foliage.

Another option is to provide some instant shade by using a secured beach umbrella or covering the plants with shade cloth, heavy cardboard or newspaper, old curtains, dead palm fronds or leafy branches.

Water plants deeply every two or three days, although during very hot spells some plants may need daily/ twice daily watering.

Watch for signs of stress.

Don’t water during the heat of the day, water early in the morning or in the evening.

Feed plants with a liquid fertiliser every 10 days and top up the mulch where needed.

And keep picking, the more you pick, the more they produce.

Baby birds FAMILY SUPPORT: Morgan Bennett, pictured at a function in late 2012 with her mother Judy and sister Ainslee, said her family and friends have been an invaluable source of support.

“Achievable challenges are what you aim for.

“You don’t always feel better, it varies from day to day.

“It’s not a glamorous illness at all.”

Morgan said achieving real and lasting recovery can take several years, and her condition has affected her long term health, leaving her with the bone density of a much older woman, among other symptoms.

The constant support of her family and close friends has been invaluable.

“Mum took two years off work to nurse me, and my sister is brilliant and very supportive,” she said.

“You find out who your true friends are.”

Morgan said if people are concerned about their friends or family, they should look out for warning signs of eating disorders such as obsessions with food, recipes

or cooking; an excessive devotion to exercise, loss of interest in hobbies, strict rituals in relation to food, negative body image and self talk, and more.

“People of any age, race or gender are susceptible,” she said.

THE sun is shining, the birds are singing – and the babies are out!

In spring and summer we often see a lot of baby birds brought into the clinic.

We love that there are people out there looking out for our wildlife, but sometimes these birds might just be tackling their ‘first steps’.

“I can see a baby bird on the ground.

“What do I do?”

Firstly, unless it is in obvious or immediate danger (for example on a road or being stalked by a cat) watch from afar.

This will give you a chance to get an idea of what kind of bird it is, and whether mum and dad are hanging around keeping an eye on things.

There are two different types of birds – precocial and altricial.

Precocial birds are ready to go from the day they are born, they are covered in down and have their eyes open, they can feed themselves soon after they hatch.

Often their nests are on the ground.

These include ducklings, plovers, brush turkeys and swamphens.

Altricial birds are born without feathers or down, their eyes closed and are completely dependent on the parents for warmth and food.

These birds are often in nests up in trees and bushes, and include honeyeaters, parrots, pigeons, insectivores, carnivores and raptors.

If the bird you find is featherless, it will need care from its parents to keep it warm.

If the bird is sick or injured, or if you know its parents are dead then it will need to be taken to your vet or wildlife carer for care.

If you can see a nest nearby and the baby appears healthy, you can put it back into its nest.

If it has considerable down or feathers and you know the parents are nearby but you cannot reach the nest, you can put them into a makeshift nest made out of a bucket, with a branch for access in and out, drainage holes in the bottom, and leaves and sticks inside (see website below for more information).

Fledglings are birds that have just left the nest and are learning to fly.

They often will fall out or seem to be fluttering around on the ground.

Fledglings have a significant number of adult looking feathers, not just down.

The parents are often watching from nearby trees.

Fledglings are the birds that

are most often ‘rescued’ when they are in fact not in distress.

If these birds are in danger, place them onto a nearby branch off the ground.

It is a myth that adult birds will abandon their young if they can smell that humans have handled them.

Birds don’t recognise their offspring by smell, instead they identify them by their call, so you are not doing any harm by putting a nestling back into its nest, or a fledgling onto a branch.

Any birds obviously injured or unwell should be brought into your vet for an assessment.

It is a very good idea to make note of where you found the bird, and see if the parents are anywhere in sight so that if we can release it, we will know where to go.

Rivers still fishing well

WASNâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;T last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rainfall an absolute blessing.

Despite the high rainfall totals across the region, the rivers have not been too badly affected.

Both the Ovens and King rivers have risen, and become slightly off color, but because the rainfall fell over such a short period of time, this flush should push through pretty quickly.

I have had quite a few fishing reports from all around the place this weekend.

The best one was from Brett Corker.

Brett was fishing from his kayak in the Ovens River at the junction here in Wangaratta one night last week.

He was about 100 metres upstream from the junction where he managed to catch the big toe on his right foot.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right folks, my old mate snapper, while attempting a complex backhanded cast from the seat of his kayak while fishing with no shoes on, managed to catch his toe.

The YouTube video brought tears to my eyes I laughed so much.

The Ovens, King, Kiewa and Broken rivers have all been producing cod over the last week, while Lake Mulwala has

also been producing a few bigger fish.

Vanessa Bennet from Lake Mulwala Fish Camp Ski managed an 83cm Murray cod on a surface lure down there last week.

Downstream of Lake Mulwala there has also been some decent Murray cod caught, as well as some lovely yellowbelly that have been caught on baits of

worms and shrimp.

Lake Hume has been producing squillions of small redfin, as well as a few bigger redfin for those anglers willing to move around a lot in boats searching for schools of fish.

Soft plastics bobbed up and down off the bottom have accounted for the best results there.

Shallow mallow

AT the moment I’m wondering if I’m either way shallower than I ever imagined or perhaps I really am just disrespectful.

I’m hoping for neither, but let’s see.

I’m sure you’re wondering what happened for me to draw such an indecisive conclusion (if that’s not an oxymoron).

Well, you see, a while back, while sitting around with a few others, someone commented on the sad news of the day; that Nelson Mandela had passed away.

“Oh, yes,” we all nodded in reverent tones.

Such a sad day for the world.

What an amazing and inspirational man he had been, we agreed.

We all looked appropriately sombre as each of us, no doubt, considered our world without such incredible people as Mr Mandela.

But then, in the middle of our reverie, someone piped up with this: “Oh, and did you hear the guy from Gilligan’s Island also passed away today too?”

A horrified collective gasp erupted around the room.

“Oh, my God. Not Gilligan. That’s so sad.” we blurted simultaneously, hands clutching anguished little faces.

“Oh, that’s just horrible!” someone said.

“Poor Gilligan,” said someone else, “…or whoever it was…do we know exactly which guy it was?

“Was it Bob whatshisname? Or the other one….you know… the Skipper guy? Aww. Soooo sad.”

“I hope it’s not poor Gilligan,” I wailed. “I just loved him.”

With that, a few of us launched with gusto into a rousing rendition of the Gilligan’s Island theme song.

Much to the surprise of some of the onlookers, we knew it word for word and even did some comedic actions.

Afterwards we smiled with satisfaction at the fine tribute we’d just paid to a wonderful man.

But which wonderful man did we honor?

Was it Nelson Mandela, a real live,

No, it was Gilligan; that fictitious doofus who good-naturedly endured years of bullying by the screeching, camera-hogging, hat-slapping Skipper.

And all on a remarkably resource-laden uncharted desert island, complete with a movie star’s full wardrobe and a professor with enough know-how to build just about any device known to man….except, oddly enough, a boat.

The ridiculous nature of what had just happened dawned on us and we began to giggle.

Even though the loss of any person’s life (including a poor man from a TV show) is indeed, sad, we felt slightly ashamed that perhaps we’d been a little more overtly upset by the demise of Gilligan.

My only defence is that we were swept away in a nostalgic moment and that perhaps Nelson Mandela’s passing was less of a surprise, given his age and poor state of health in recent months. That’s it. I’ve got nothing else.

As it happened, later in the day, a friend and I visited Google to verify which of Gilligan’s Island cast members had actually died and discovered there seemed to be no such news on that day and that, in fact, Bob Denver (aka Gilligan) had actually died eight years ago.

“Awww. Poor Gilligan,” we reiterated but, the news now being eight years old, definitely took the edge off our sorrow.

“And rest in peace, Nelson,” we added, acknowledging the true tragedy of the day.

WITH ANITA McPHERSON sealed popped was sweet relief in itself, before I poured it into a glass and watched the white bubbles fight to the top.

This wine is fresh and lively with the aroma of fresh apples, blossom and honeydew melon, and there are pleasant, yeasty notes rising up from the fizz.

The flavor is delicate with more kiwi and apple fruitiness, balanced with citrus acidity, and its vigor makes it an ideal aperitif and conversation starter.

My tip is that the bottle wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t spend long in the ice bucket and that is a good thing.

Slip your feet into it while youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got a glass in your hand, I guarantee youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll feel as cool as a cucumber.

IN my part of the world coleslaw conjures up images of limp cabbage in a watery, gloopy, sweet mayonnaise on an all-you-can-eat buffet.

But Jared Ingersoll of Danks Street Depot, and an inspirational chef introduced me to this recipe in his book and changed my world for the better, even though I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like the flavor of capsicum.

I make this often, and crave for it when I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any made in the fridge.

It goes really well with ham, pork and roast chicken.

Bring to the boil for 15 minutes then add the water.

WE may be used to hot weather in this region, but the recent heatwave has pushed animal, vegetable and mineral to its limits.

A generous-sized bucket packed with ice and a bottle of Pizzini Wines Prosecco was a sight for sore eyes at the end of another hot day, and it was so worth waiting for.

THE summer holidays have come to an end and there are a lot of lunchboxes that need to be filled.

Here are a few back-toschool lunchbox ideas to get your kids and teens through the school year with plenty of energy.

Quick refuel: Tub of yoghurt, cheese cut into cubes, tamari seeds, hard-boiled egg, popcorn, corn chips, homemade fruit or vegetable muffin.

Fruit break: Small container of fruit salad, frozen grapes, piece of fruit, tub of berries.

LAST week I was guided to an article in CPAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the Blackâ&#x20AC;? dealing with the part managers play in the psychological health and wellbeing of individuals in the workplace.

In an interview with CPA Australia, Dr Sam Harvey, who leads a program of research on workplace mental health conducted jointly by the University of New South Wales and 5IF #MBDL %PH *OTUJUVUF TUBUFE JO UIBU â&#x20AC;&#x153;managers have a really crucial role in terms of identifying when people are becoming unwell, managing (them) and helping them get back into the workplaceâ&#x20AC;?.

I know we are not all great managers and letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face it, leaving clinical health issues aside, the workplace can be a very stressful place. But this stress is quite often outside the area of the managerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s responsibility.

Dr Amanda Gordon, Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Canberra believes weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not always good at attributing our stress, saying it is cumulative - meaning we may be stressed by something outside of work, but feel it more when a little workplace stress is added.

So what can we do to obtain some feedback?

According to the APS survey, fewer than half of working Australians regularly receive relevant feedback and recognition for their work.

As an individual, you need to take some responsibility in seeking feedback and what is expected of you when the manager is not providing that feedback.

According to APS president Tim Hannan, employees who take advantage of the opportunity to discuss these matters with managers tend to find it reduces their stress.

For some months I have been following the saga of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter takeover bids.
