THE constant hum of birdsong breaks the early morning silence of the country homestead Cath and Richard Watter and their five children call home near Peechelba. Native plants flourish throughout their 100 acre property, and you may even catch a glimpse of an odd koala nestled in the trees. For the Watter family, creating a welcome environment for flora and fauna is part of their passion to preserve the environment for the future. “We’ve always had a love of bird watching in particular,” Cath said. “And we were struck by the diversity of bird life in the area.” The historic property has gone from being a quarry in the early settlement of the area, to rural land, with the previous owners (the Colville family) helping to establish many trees on the property. The Watters placed a covenant on the property three years ago, and have been working with the conservation organisation Trust For Nature to help implement a management plan. Richard said that despite a dry few years, trees planted on the property are establishing well and native plants are flourishing – often popping up of their own accord. “It’s amazing what grows back,” he said. continued page |
