By KYLIE WILSON IT’S a long way from the hills of Porepunkah to the competitive comedy circuits of Edinburgh and London – but that is the path that comedian David Quirk has managed to forge over the past few years. The self described “dark and confronting” comedian said he has always loved making people laugh. “I noticed it at primary school,” Mr Quirk said. “My earliest memory was when we had to do some skit of Mulga Bill’s Bicycle for the Christmas concert at the Porepunkah hall, and I was Mulga Bill. “I had to ride around on a little trike bike and I just rode it like an idiot. “I don’t remember what I did exactly, something with my face. “But the teacher laughed a lot. “I knew I was doing something OK if I made the teacher laugh.” That early episode helped fuel his comedic ambitions. “I used to say I wanted to be a comedian, though I hardly knew what that meant,” Mr Quirk said. “I also wanted to be a fighter pilot back then, but that meant doing two things I’m against: killing people and hard work. “Comedy it was, then.” From tentative early gigs at venues as diverse as Victoria University and the Wandiligong Nut Festival to performing on the cutthroat stages of Edinburgh, and even making a cameo appearance in the recent continued page |
