WINE TALK WITH
ANITA
WITH her career having taken her into the competitive world of international winemaking, it is hard to believe Lilian Carter initially had second thoughts about getting involved in the industry. Though surrounded by vineyards and winemaking, with her parents heavily involved in the industry, she was “wary about taking the obvious path”. Somewhat reluctantly she began to work with her family and at neighboring wineries in her spare time. “It opened my eyes to the intensity of harvest,” Lilian said. “The smell of freshly crushed grapes before the sun comes up is the smell of vintage. “Now I can’t imagine doing anything else.” As well as working in China, she calls Rutherglen home and recently became the winemaker at Symphonia Wines, immersed in the burgeoning King Valley wine industry. It’s an opportunity she is relishing, saying the Symphonia vineyard, owned by Peter and Suzanne Evans, and nurtured by previous winemaker Robert Paul, is “incredibly unique”. “It was established 30 years ago by Peter Read, and he was visionary for the early 1980s, planting a range of alternative varieties; petit manseng, pinot gris, savagnin, tannat, saperavi, and tempranillo as well as some more traditional varieties,” she said. Lilian said she felt an affinity for the King Valley region. continued page |
