WHEN people suffer loss and grief, they are on an emotional rollercoaster, feeling all kinds of extreme emotions and often struggling to regain personal balance and sense of self. These feelings are often magnified in the younger generation. And more and more people are turning to the internet and social media in hard times to express their feelings and share them with those closest. This need is at the heart of a new program being established by Uniting Care Goulburn North East for young people dealing with grief and loss, which has been dubbed “myrollercoaster”. Acting chief executive officer Liz Chapman said the idea came about because of the increasingly blurred lines between online and offline worlds. She said that many young people make no distinction between the two worlds, and counselling and support services need to evolve to cater for that need. “It made sense to us to figure out how to blend a service that works both online and offline,” she said. “We’re talking about major life issues.” Youth engagement officer Lisa Norris is passionate about helping young people and is excited to pursue the program. continued page |
