WHEN Luke R Davies and the Recycled String Band take the stage of the blues tent at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues this weekend, it will be another string in the bow for the creative bunch of North East and Border musicians.

What really sets them apart from most others is their instruments – made from recycled bits and pieces.

Just about every spare item around the band’s homes get a look in in their recycled instruments – including percussion using Xbox drums and a tea strainer, using doilies for a mute, to making an Irish whistle out of PVC conduit.

Then there is Chris Mangan’s hubcap banjo, Jack Jensen’s fretless bass guitar with the body made from a vintage leather suitcase, Luke Davies’ resonator guitar made from a chain guard, and Bruce Gregory’s ukulele constructed from a cigar box.

The instruments give definition to the word “repurposing” – and they sound fantastic.

The band’s recycling ethos even extends to their secondhand stage wear, to the extent that old ties do double duty as instrument straps, and even their road cases are secondhand suitcases.

“People are getting better about recycling their stuff,” Luke said.

“I do think it’s an important message and I hope it gets people thinking about their situation and the future,” said fellow band member Bruce Gregory. continued page |

“Importantly, it will retain the primary objectives of a co-operative in maximising farm gate returns for farmer owners,” he said.

“It will also support on-farm and industry investment, and in turn grow the Australian dairy industry for the benefit of regional communities.”

Murray Goulburn has certainly not been sitting idly by, as it has arranged for the offer to be fully funded with increased debt facilities from its existing financiers National Australia Bank, Australia and New Zealand Banking group and Westpac Banking Corporation.

A merged entity would see over 3000 supplier shareholders delivering in excess of 4 billion litres to the nine processing sites annually.

Strong growth will see both the domestic and international dairy markets increase with forecast revenues in financial year 2014 of export sales of $1.4 billion to more than 60 countries being achievable.

There are some things that may impact on the final price if WCB offer shareholders a special dividend.

I do not think that it is past the post - there is a lot of soul searching yet to be done and it could be blocked by the ACCC. As a supporter of Australian ownership, let’s hope that if Murray Goulburn is not successful, the board of WCB will look closely at Bega’s offer.

Throughout spring and summer the whole canopy of the tree is covered in clusters of sweet, fragrant, creamy yellow, frangipani-like flowers.

Despite its common name, it is not related to the frangipani, but is closely related to pittosporum.

Native frangipani is a rainforest tree which is native to eastern Australia and New Guinea.

It is tough and well suited to our conditions, handling full sun, drought, cooler temperatures and even frosts once established.

Young seedlings need to be protected from frosts until they are around one metre in height.

Native frangipani is an evergreen tree growing to around eight metres in height.

It has a narrow upright growth habit with the heavily foliaged branches growing in horizontal layers making it ideal for small gardens.

The strongly scented flowers are whitish cream aging to deep yellow, followed by pear-shaped woody capsules containing winged seeds.

In some forms the flowers may have a reddish centre.

The effect of masses of cream and yellow flowers is very lovely and attracts bees, honey-eating birds and butterflies to the garden.

Native frangipani is fast growing and grows best in full sun but can handle dappled shade, although it flowers best in full sun.

It needs to be planted in a sheltered position to provide protection from strong winds as the branches are brittle and can be damaged.

Native frangipani prefers a well-drained soil with lots of added organic matter and topped with mulch to conserve water.

Provide regular watering during hot dry conditions.

Most nurseries will have native frangipani in stock or grow your own as they are easily propagated from cuttings in spring or grown from freshly harvested seeds.

These attractive trees deserve a place in any garden, plant one near an outdoor living area or window where the delightful perfume and flowers can be enjoyed.

WHO is going to be the winner in the bid to take over Warrnambool Cheese and Butter?

Let’s hope it is an Australian co-operative.

These past few weeks I could not get my head out of the papers and the company media releases, following the bids and counter bids to take control of Australia’s oldest dairy company (ASX Listed) but a one-time only 10-member farmer co-operative, which both Bega Cheese and Murray Goulburn are.

Chief executive officer of Warrnambool Cheese and Butter David Lord says the company is “in play” with the board looking for the best possible outcome for their investors.

It all started a month ago with Bega Cheese making an offer, closely followed by Canadian dairy manufacturer Saputo on October 7 and then last week an offer from Australia’s largest dairy company Murray Goulburn Co-operative.

At the time of writing it would appear, the bid from Murray Goulburn will return the most to shareholders, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are further bids from the other two suitors.

Murray Goulburn’s proposal would create one of the largest Australian owned food and beverage businesses which would be controlled one hundred per cent by dairy farmers.

Forecasts carried out show the combined entity would generate revenues in the order of $3.2 billion and would create a top five Australian food and beverage business.

At the close of business on the day before Bega’s offer Warrnambool Cheese and Butter shares were trading at $4.51, so this bid represents putting a premium of 66 per cent on the value of the shares.

In addition a combined entity would estimate to produce in excess of four billion litres of milk in the 2014 financial year, placing it in the top 20 global producers.

Modern training and its importance to pet health

The band first got together early last year, and has been in high demand ever since, with a highlight being winning the National Film and Sound Archive Album of the Year award for their album “Not a Note Wasted”.

Although members of the band have played at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz before, this is the first year they have performed on the blues stage.

“We play blues for the connoisseur,” said band member Bryan “Rolie” Dwyer, with influences including roots, blues and folk, as well as acts such as the Mississippi Sheiks.

“Playing on the main blues stage is a big shot in the arm for local musos.”

Luke said the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues was an annual boost for the local community.

“I think the festival is awesome for the town and local musicians that are into the styles of music at the festival,” he said.

“There are opportunities to get

involved for local musicians of all ages.

“It’s a real buzz to finally get on the main stage at Wangaratta after many years on the Reid Street stage.”

Bruce said performing at the blues venue is a particularly big deal for him.

“I was born in Wangaratta – a long time ago – so I’m excited to be part of the festival, as I think it’s world class,” he said.

“We do have fun on stage as we play, so hopefully that will put everyone in a good mood for the rest of the festival.”

TRAINING achieves the ability for the owner to communicate in a way their dog understands.

Modern techniques using positive reinforcement involve owners understanding what dogs want to work for and motivating them to learn behaviors to gain these outcomes; whether this is food, attention, a special game, or other positive incentives.

The brilliance of these techniques is that they also help the brain learn through the brain pathways associated with success while making training fun and improving the owner-pet bond.

Unfortunately, older style training techniques that “teach the dog who’s boss” were so prevalent in the past that some books and even websites may still encourage their use.

Punishment methods encouraged by this attitude can increase responses related to fear and anxiety, and will have negative effects on the memory and learning pathways of the brain.

Punishment does not help a dog learn any desired behavior to replace the unwanted behavior, thus a pet may accidentally start to perform a behavior that is even more annoying while trying to find a behavior that works to stop punishment.

In the past, dogs that did not respond to this type of training were sometimes considered to be stubborn, naughty or spiteful.

Nowadays we have a better understanding and we realise such thoughts are unhelpful for the pet and owner.

Increased education about the benefits of modern training techniques is important for owners to help their pets with proven teaching methods.

And why do I write about this in a veterinary column?

Because older style training techniques and devices that seem to provide a quick answer to a behavior problem may change a normal dog with a training problem to a dog with fear and anxiety issues or frustration due to the inability to find an acceptable response for their owner.

This can lead to abnormal and unpredictable emotional responses that can even lead to aggression.

A pet’s welfare can suffer severely and they would then require veterinary help for any physical manifestations of the psychological issues as well as qualified behaviorist help for the underlying emotional problems.

If the communication between owner or trainer and dog is perfect and the problem continues, a trainer can discus the case with a qualified behaviorist.

FISHING FOCUS

CATCH OF THE WEEK

Fishing remains pretty patchy THIS week’s fishing report is a bit of a mixed bag.

I have heard of redfin and yellowbelly being caught at Lake Hume, but not in record numbers.

The fishing has been steady up there in recent weeks.

Lake Eildon on the other hand has been slower than many anglers had hoped.

Jeff Baade from Lake Eildon Cruises boat hire has told me a few yellowbelly and redfin have been caught, but nobody is breaking records.

Jeff also told me of a client that fishes every Monday from a hire boat without fail, and has been consistently catching trout off Kennedy Point boat ramp.

As with any waterway, if you persevere long enough eventually you will crack the code and start having regular success.

For many years I used to call Lake William Hovell “Lake Disappointment” because I could never catch fish there.

Back in the mid-1990s I started working the lake out properly and having more regular catches, and these days I catch fish of some description most times I fish it.

In saying that, my father, brother and his kids fished Lake William Hovell on Sunday morning and never had a bite but that’s fishing I guess.

night, but a few of us also did a fair bit of fishing.

As has been the pattern lately, the trout fishing in the Rose and Dandongadale rivers was just dead.

I caught one tiny brown trout about 20cm long, and that was a fluke.

On the bright side, the

Rose River has a very healthy population of native river blackfish which provided myself and a few others with a lot of fun during the night after the sun had set.

The blackfish were small, as they usually are, but catching them on worms in the dark was quite an enjoyable fishing option.

It’s a crowd pleaser because of its appealing freshness, light citrus notes and sherbert-like zing, and because it can be enjoyed morning, noon and night.

The Prosecco was as well matched with the fresh apricot Danish and blueberry pancakes as it was with the smoked salmon Blini, and it looked gorgeous in ice buckets by the poolside.

Best of all, the guest of honor said the Prosecco rocked, and that’s got to be good thing.

It’s available at local outlets, or you could taste it at the cellar door in Whitfield before you head into the Trattoria for lunch.

Flash flood in Wangaratta, 1975 A FLASH flood in Wangaratta followed the dumping from the heavens of 33mm of rain in an hour.

The floods swept along Rowan Street, ankle deep through the Rickards and Henderson building and Carrolls Supermarket.

Waves rolled across footpaths and into buildings as the speeding cars of exuberant youths aquaplaned along Rowan Street.

WITH BRONWYN INGLETON THESE colorful cookies are terrific for all sorts of occasions.

The kids and I made them the other day for a birthday party, but the recipe was actually for a Halloween cookie party.

It all depends on the shaped cookie cutter you have.

Make sure you mould the ice cream stick on firmly, but without breaking the dough.

Let the kids have the fun of decorating them with a variety of lollies.

Makes about 20-25 cookies.

Method Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.

Grease baking trays.

Put the butter, sugar and vanilla in a bowl of an electric mixer, whisk together until pale and fluffy. This is called ‘creaming’.

Add the egg and keep beating the mixture until well mixed.

Sift the flour and cocoa powder together, then sift this over the butter mixture, mix everything together with a metal spoon.

Wrap the dough in cling film and put in the fridge for 20 minutes.

Sprinkle a little flour over a work surface.

Cut the dough into 3 and roll each piece to 3-4mm thick.

Cut out your shapes using the cookie cutters you have chosen, re-rolling any trimmings.

Carefully lift the cookie onto a stick and then gently onto pre-greased baking trays.

Decorate each with the lollies.

Bake for 6-8 minutes, depending on the size of the cookie, until golden and cooked.

Cool for a few minutes before moving to a wire rack to cool completely.

IT is good to know not every 21st birthday party has to descend into messy affair involving staggering blokes, thumping music and empty stubbies strewn across the back yard.

If that’s the way you want to do it that’s fine by me, but I was introduced to a much more interesting way when my friend decided to host a 21st birthday brunch for her daughter.

The theme was the color white, and the house was beautifully decorated with strings of paper lanterns, vases of blue and white flowers and glass containers of blue and white lollies.

The food looked as lovely as the guests, with savory and sweet buffet tables of miniature sized treats.

The drinks were varied but bubbles were the go, and Dal Zotto’s Pucino Prosecco was right at home.

VINTAGE CELLARHANDS Vacancies exist for suitable people to join Baileys of Glenrowan for the 2014 Vintage. The period will be approximately 10 weeks duration starting mid January 2014. It is expected that you will be available for the whole of this period. The successful candidate may be required to work shifts and be available to work weekends.

Responsibilities include a wide range of cellar duties and experience in working with pumps and other winery equipment will be an advantage.

To be successful you must be able to work as part of a team, however there is an expectation that you can work independently in various situations.

Good health is essential, as much of the work is physically demanding, requiring a good level of fitness.

A forklift licence will be an advantage.
