IF weather forecasters are correct, the predicted snowfall in August will set both Falls Creek and Mt Hotham up for the remainder of the season. Both mountains received numerous natural snowfalls last month and were transformed on July 11 and 12 when more than 40cm of snow fell at the resorts. Mt Hotham and Falls Creek News spoke to Falls Creek Ski Lifts and Mt Hotham Skiing Company’s Anthony O’Shea last Friday and he said July hadn’t been as good as he’d hoped for, however, August looked even more promising. “We’ve had a fairly dry July but we’ve got about half-a-metre of natural snow

cast is accurate the snowfalls could set the resorts up so guests could be skiing right through until the end of September and even into early October,” he said. “It’s kind of the opposite to last year, where we had impeccable snowfalls early in the season and nothing really in August and September, so if the snow keeps coming we could have an amazing last couple of months on the mountains.” Both resorts were hit with some sleety wet snow on July 22, however, Mr O’Shea said the damage was quickly undone by Mother Nature. “We had about 4cm of really wet snow across the resorts, making skiing conditions not ideal, but we quickly re-
gained that with the dry crisp snowfall on Friday (July 24), and more is set to hit on the weekend.” August is set to be a busy month in the Alpine Resorts with numerous racing events on the calendar. “We got some racing events at Hotham with Chumpy Pullin hosting a number of board events and Falls Creek will be gearing up for the Falls Freestyle Festival, which is geared at increasing participation and then steadily it will become more serious,” Mr O’Shea said. “We’ve also got Storm the Castle in mid-August which is a big freestyle event and new to Falls Creek this year is a night team race which will be Australia’s longest beginner run called Wombat’s Rambler.”

and close to one metre in snow making areas,” he said. “The next few fronts that are coming in this weekend (July 25 – 26) and continuing next week, look to be fantastic and should top up our snow making areas. “It’s going to be one of those rare events where the temperatures are super cold, down to -9 at one point and perfect precipitation. “It really is the making of the perfect snow storm event.” Mr O’Shea said August looked like it had more of the same in store and both Mt Hotham and Falls Creek would be set up for the rest of the season. “It looks as though August is going to be really quite snowy and if the fore-

Music’s biggest names hit the slopes
ONCE again there are plenty of big music acts playing at Mt Hotham and Falls Creek in August and to make sure you don’t miss out here are the biggest names to hit the stages on both mountains this month. Festival favourite Hot Dub Time Machine, the world’s first time-travelling party, is set to take crowds on a transcendent dance through pop music history at Hotham’s Swindlers Bar on August 6 before a show the following night The Man in Falls Creek. Mashing up tunes from 1954 to 2015 on vinyl turntables with awesome visual effects, Hot Dub Time Machine aka DJ Tom Loud has quickly become one of the biggest ticket selling electronic acts in Australia, smashing main stages at every marquee festival including Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival, Stereoson-
ic, and Groovin The Moo. DJ Tom has also just returned to the country from performing consecutive sell-out shows across Europe including headlining the 100,000 strong Hogmanay NYE in Edinburgh while also making his US debut at Coachella. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased through Moshtix. On August 21, Melbourne three piece rock band Dallas Frasca will play a free show at Falls Creek’s The Man. Having won Triple J’s ‘Light Your Fuse’ competition back in 2006, the same year in which they formed, Dallas Frasca is now a seasoned veteran on the Australian festival scene. The 2010 Musicoz Awards Artist Of The Year recently released their third studio album, Love Army - which hit the Top 20 ARIA Charts and Top 10 Australian Album Charts in
its first week of release - and will be playing all their newest songs for you. Australia’s favourite hip hop snow friends Bliss n Eso are back touring the Victorian Alps once again. After the success of last year’s tour MC Bliss, MC Eso and DJ Izm are on their way back to do what they do best, cause havoc on the mountain and blow the roof off every venue they play with two decks, a mixer and a pair of mics. Their 2015 snow tour will start at Mt Buller before they hit Mt Hotham on August 20 at Swindlers and then Falls Creek six days later at The Man on the August 26. CityWide Krew will be the support act for the Buller and Hotham shows and Mind Over Matter will kick things off at Falls Creek. Tickets are $50 and ex-
tremely limited so get in quick before shows are sold out. Few 90s kids won’t remember listening to Melbourne punk rockers 28 Days and fans can relive all their favourite childhood and teenage tracks when they step on to the stage at The Man on August 29. Having released five studio albums three of which debuted in the ARIA top 40, 28 Days saw plenty of success in their hay day. Their second album Upstyledown which debuted at number 1 in July 2000 went certified platinum while also seeing commercial success on the Australian singles charts with songs like ‘Rip It Up’, ‘Goodbye’ and ‘What’s the Deal. After calling it quits in 2007 the band got back together in 2009 and over the past few years have returned to playing shows.

YOU don’t get much more extreme than this. Flown in by helicopter to the peak of a remote mountain,with kilometres of vertical, untracked descent, competing against some of the world’s best. It’s the kind of challenge Falls Creek skier Tom Costa has dreamed of, and will make a reality at the end of this month. The former World Cup mogulist will carry the hopes of his nation, again, in the World Heli Challenge in New Zealand.
Some 60 of the best skiers and snowboarders from around the world will battle it out - all trying to pick the best line amid unforgiving back country terrain deep in the South Island’s wilderness. “I have wanted to give this type of event a crack for years and this year with the help of my sponsors, Central Snowsports and Deep Powder Tours, I am making it happen,� Costa said. Born and raised at the base of Falls Creek, in Mt Beauty, Costa and his three brothers learnt to ski young - and fast. Adrian and Paul Costa represented Australia at the Winter Olympic Games
and Tom also competed for his country in freestyle on the World Cup circuit, and at two world championships. “I guess this freeskiing is just a natural progression,� the 32 year old said. “I’ve had the opportunity to ski around the world and be exposed to some pretty extreme terrain..and I just love the challenge.� But this is his first event. “It’s hard to say how I will fare, but I am definitely very excited about representing my home resort of Falls Creek, and you can bet I will be giving it my very best shot,� he said.
“Obviously this sort of event is not easy to train for, especially in Australia, but the plan is to do as much backcountry skiing as possible and try to get comfortable in the big mountain arena. “Weather permitting, I hope to spend some time on Mt McKay with local skiing legend Steve Lee on his new backcountry tours.� Peaks with 50 degree pitches, 80 to 100 foot drops, open bowls, deep snow and rocky chutes will test every ounce of Costa’s skill and endurance. Disabled wintersport finanical boost
DISABLED WinterSport Australia Inc received a healthy financial boost to help continue their remarkable work in helping people with disabilities prosper and grow, early last month. The Victorian community organisation was awarded with a $9,950 Westpac Foundation Community grant on July 1. Disabled WinterSport Australia aims to provide equal opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in winter sports of their choice and as part of the initiative, the Mt Hotham Alpine In-Re-
sort Program was developed to maintain a suite of adaptive equipment, coordinate adaptive lessons for visitors and provide a central contact for all disability services and issues in the resort. Disabled WinterSport Australia spokesperson Eric Bickerton said the grant will enable the organisation to engage an employee specifically dedicated to work on the Resort Service Program at Mt Hotham across the winter season in 2015. “This person will be appointed as our Resort Services Coordinator, acting as
a central point of contact to support the understanding of disability and recreation access needs acting as a pivotal point of contact for people with disabilities and their families and friends, providing access and relevant information to enjoy the sport,” he said. “This work will allow us to bring forward the implementation of our National Resort Services Program Strategy, the basis of which is to foster independent sport and recreational participation opportunities in all resorts across Australia by developing a disability access and visitor infor-
mational recourse not just to snow sports but also a more general, wider outcome is to encourage sport, recreation and leisure participation in the alpine area across all seasons.” Now in its third year, the Westpac Foundation Community Grants are designed to help foster long-term social change and help to make better futures for youth at risk, people living with disability, Indigenous Australians, women, refugees, homeless populations and elderly Australians. Westpac Foundation ex-
ecutive officer Lisa Waldron said the grants help alleviate growing multiple social issues. “The need in our communities is significant,” she said. “We have a long and proud history of helping our communities to prosper and grow. By partnering with the Westpac Foundation, we are able to support innovative social programs that have the potential to achieve real change and improve the lives of those who are facing disadvantage.” Westpac regional general manager of retail banking in
Victoria Scott Whitford said Westpac was thrilled to be able to present the Westpac Foundation Community Grant to Disabled WinterSport Australia. “They have ground-breaking social ideas for change in the North East providing much needed support to people with disabilities,” Mr Whitford said. “We’re delighted to be helping Disabled WinterSport Australia achieve their goals and to enable them to continue their unwavering support towards North East Victoria.”

Police warn of ‘back country’ dangers ONE year after two other men were rescued and two snowboarders lost their lives, local police are reminding skiers and snowboarders to take extreme care when heading out into back country. Weather in the high country can change in an instant and Bright police senior sergeant Doug Incoll said the one year anniversary of two searches on Mt Bogong was a timely reminder for people to take care in back country terrain. “The weather can change in an instant at this time of year, and although the two snowboarders who died did everything right, nature is a powerful force,” he said. “It was an extremely unfortunate incident, but it is a timely reminder for people who are
thinking about heading into extreme back country terrain.” Snr Sgt Incoll urged back country skiers, snowboarders and walkers to make sure they are carrying all of the appropriate equipment, including epirbs and back up mobile phone batteries. “On these mountains, the weather conditions can change very quickly and sometimes unexpectedly – people need to be prepared for the worst,” he said. “Correct equipment should be carried, including an epirb, a smartphone and back up battery, GPS, enough food for their trip and changes of dry clothes. “If people are camping in the snow, they need to make sure they have the correct sleeping equipment that is suitable for the conditions.”
Should bad weather roll in, Snr Sgt Incoll said people should be prepared to change their plans. “Depending on the environment they may be in people should be open to changing their plans if the weather changes for the worse,” he said. “We are hoping people will use common sense and give rational thought to whether they should continue or give it a miss.” Winds can reach speeds of up to 130km/h and temperatures can drop to -16 degrees celsius in the Alpine areas, and Snr Sgt Incoll said searches in back country terrain also put service personnel in the line of danger. “Back country skiing and snowboarding is becoming a more and more popular pur-

suit, and there will be more incidents of some kind as a direct proportion of the number of people going out,” he said. “If people get lost, become stranded or ill, the Alpine Search and Rescue team will do whatever they can to find them, but it can put them in a dangerous position. “Search members need to have a serious level of fitness, both mental and physical and spend quite a lot of time training in the terrain and environment of somewhere like Mt Bogong. “Our message is, think it through – it can go pear shaped in an instant and time is critical if something does go wrong up there. “In winter we don’t have the luxury of time like we would in the warmer months – it could be a matter of half-an-hour.”

Dinner Plain Sled Dog Challenge attracts 350 THE annual Altitude 5000 Dinner Plain Sled Dog Challenge is back again in 2015 and this year’s event has attracted over 350 dogs and their mushers. Australia’s original and most prestigious sled dog race has lured over 70 teams and more than 350 dogs to Dinner Plain and they are preparing to battle for the glory of victory on August 8 - 9. With five main sled classes, mushers can enter their hounds in two dog, three dog, four dog, six dog or eight dog events. There will also be three touring classes for the less competitive and the skijoring class for those who would prefer to ski behind their dogs. Dinner Plain Sled Dog Challenge trail boss Rob Stevens said there will be entrants from all around Australia competing. “We get a few competitors coming from all over the country, most are from Victoria and NSW, a few from South Australia and Queensland, but our biggest
contingent is probably from Perth,” he said. “There’s a team of girls that have been coming over for the last six years – they travel all over the Nullarbor and do the Falls Creek race first and then Dinner Plain and then head over to Canberra.” This year organisers are hoping to hold an enduro run on Sunday afternoon with the hope of continuing it into the future. “The enduro race will take competitors out the back of Dinner Plain, it won’t be on groomed trails and it will be very hilly but if we get a few having a go at that we might try and have it as a full event next year,” he said. Mr Stevens said anyone wanting to see 400 Huskies in one place should make their way up to Dinner Plain on August 8 and 9.

Footy and netball charity challenge By JUSTIN JENVEY MEMBERS of the Dinner Plain community and Mt Hotham Resort Management Board and Mt Hotham Skiing Company will take part in the annual MND Mountain Challenge charity football and netball matches next Friday. Run by the Dinner Plain Residents Business Operators Society (DPROS) the event is now in its fifth year and pits the Dinner Plain Mt Hotham Demons against the Omeo Benambra Rangers in a football and netball match in sup-
port of two great causes. Playing for the Canning Cup in football and the Tahnee Orchard Cup in netball, the communities come together to provide an entertaining evening of sport all whilst raising much needed funds for the Omeo Hospital and Motor Neuron research. Former AFL legends will once again join in on the event and coach the football and netball teams. Past Melbourne Football Club players Rodney Grinter and Guy Rigoni will take charge of the Dinner Plain Mt Hotham team while
Collingwood and Richmond great David Cloke and past Bulldogs, Melbourne and St Kilda player Stephen Powell will lead Omeo Benambra. The great Ron Barassi will also be in attendance, tossing the coin at the start of the match while also guest speaking at the Business of Sport Luncheon along with Beverly Brock earlier in the day. DPROS chairman Peter McKenna hopes another big crowd will turn out and help support the event once again. “It’s four quarters of comedy,
they’re not too competitive against each other but it’s good fun,” he said. “It’s an enjoyable night and it all goes to a great cause which is fantastic.” Omeo Benambra won last year’s match to level the head to head record at 2-2. The match will be played at the Omeo Football Ground on Friday, August 7, starting at 7pm, while the netball match will be played during the halftime break. A gold coin entry donation to the ground would be appreciated.

AUSTRALIAN cricketing legend Adam Gilchrist experienced snow for the first time in mid-July with his wife and children at Falls Creek. Gilchrist clipped on the skis and took to the slopes and said he was thrilled to be able to experience some great snowfalls at the resort on July 11 and 12. “This is my debut in any kind of snow so this has been remarkable and seeing the transition from just a few days ago – 15cm one night, 30cm the next time with more on the way is amazing,” he said. “I am an amateur but it looks perfect for anyone that wants to try it. “In my opinion the snows here and it looks like its set it up for the whole season and talking to all the experts they’re just thrilled- you can see the smiles appear on their faces. “It’s a bit frustrating when it’s not around but now that it’s here its go, go, go.”

AFTER launching their self-titled debut album, Australian band Kid Radio are heading to the snow this August as part of their Australian and European tour. The four-piece soulful electronic act will be appearing at The Man in Falls Creek on Saturday, August 8, for a one night only performance. The Melbourne based band members are Dylan Smith and Marcus Ross, who have been writing together for over a decade, drummer Chad Blaster and synth and double bass player Thom Butt. Kangaroo Hoppet celebrates 25th year
By ALLAN MARSLAND MORE than 1000 skiers from across the world will converge on Falls Creek later this month to take part in the weeklong festival of events and social activities that is the 25th Kangaroo Hoppet. The largest southern hemisphere member of the annual Worldloppet series of cross country ski races held in twenty countries across five continents, the Hoppet will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Saturday, August 22, with the running of the 42km Kangaroo Hoppet, together with the 21km Australian Birkebeiner and 7km Joey Hoppet. The winter of 1991, the year of the first Kangaroo Hoppet, was a year that participants and organisers will never forget. There had not been such heavy snow falls in over a decade, and when another metre of snow fell two days before the race the only option was to postpone the event for 24 hours, to allow the trail groomers time to build a new course from scratch. Fortunately they were up to the challenge and Sunday dawned with a cloudless sky and gentle breeze. No hitches for the snow’s fast and furious females THE annual Fast and Female event at Falls Creek went off without a hitch as more than 40 females enjoyed the snow in early July. Around 35, girls aged between eight and 19 and 13 women enjoyed a fun morning of cross country ski activity, run by nine of Australia’s best female XC skiers. These included past Olympians, junior and senior world championship skiers and national team members. Earlier in the week, the Nordic Bowl was a splendid green and organisers were busily planning an alternative dryland training
program, for the event. A welcome 10cms of snow fell on the Friday before, just enough for the participants to put on skis and have a fun, active day of skills games, laser biathlon and agility on cross country skis. For the final station, everyone took off their skis and joined together for a dance-off testing coordination and learning a short, hip hop routine. They say that cross country skiing is like ‘dancing on snow’, and these girls certainly laid down some great moves that showed their incredible balance, agility and versatility.

OWNING an apartment in the snow is a dream for many keen skiers and boarders. Waking up in your own apartment to see the snow-covered gum trees or returning after an exhausting day on the slopes and falling into your own bed – this is the dream. But romance aside, buying an alpine property is a commercial decision and we have the top three questions you need to ask. 1. What am I buying? Buying an alpine apartment is different from traditional sale and purchase of land because the mountain is (mostly) owned and controlled by the Government. It is called ‘Crown Land’ and is leased to companies and individuals on a long-term leasehold basis. The most typical form of ownership on the mountain is for a company to hold a lease from the Government (head lease), often referred to as a lessee company, and individuals purchase shares in the company which entitles them to a sublease of an individual apartment. You should note, the term of your sublease will only be for as long as the company’s lease, so always check how long is left to run on the head lease. Many newer subleases can now be registered with the Land Titles Office to provide a clear and safe security. A most important reason to know what you are buying is finance. The type of leasehold arrangement for alpine property has a significant impact on whether banks are prepared to lend. A registrable sublease is encouraging for the banks as they can register a mortgage in a transparent and secure manner.
2. What are the outgoings? When purchasing an apartment within a body corporate, you must carefully consider the building’s outgoings including: electricity, upcoming repairs, insurance and management fees and what proportion of those you will be required to pay. Heated driveways and footpaths can be a luxury, but also expensive to run. Always request a copy of the annual budget for the building. This will detail insurances, land tax, maintenance budgets, management fees and other expenses you will be liable to contribute towards. 3. Investment returns - what is the rental arrangement? As well as a wonderful lifestyle choice, an alpine apartment can be a good source of rental returns. If the site lease is held by a lessee company, it will have a company constitution which governs the operation and management of the building. Often, these constitutions will regulate how you may sublet your apartment to holiday and seasonal tenants. Some properties have compulsory management and letting agreements, some allow combinations and some are simply own your own. If the building does not have a compulsory letting arrangement, we recommend taking your time to consider which letting arrangement or management suits you best. If a compulsory management agreement is required, check for overall management fees, and whether these are inclusive of third party agents and suppliers. Any other questions? Disability guide available for Alpine resorts
MT Hotham has teamed up with Disabled WinterSport Australia (DWA) to create the 2015 Hotham Disability Visitors Guide – a first for Australian resorts. Mt Hotham Resort Management Board CEO Jon Hutchins said traditionally people with disabilities heading to alpine resorts had been challenging, in part due to lack of access to centralised information about key services. “We have hosted guests
with disabilities for many years, and we knew that we could make it easier for those guests by providing better information about what we have to offer,” he said. “This season, Mt Hotham has introduced additional parking arrangements for people with disabilities who require close proximity access to the snow, which are marked on the Disability Visitors Guide. “We are also now able to provide improved wheelchair
accessible village transport via a prupose-built vehicle.” DWA CEO Eric Bickerton said the DWA is excited about the relationship and joint vision with Mt Hotham to enhance both the opportunity and visitor experience for people with a disability undertaking independent recreational snow sports activities. “We are very pleased that Hotham has embraced the DWA resort services program, and I believe it’s an evolution-

Mt Hotham resort management worked closely with DWA resort services coordinator for Hotham Phil Knight to create the Visitors Disability Guide, which involved consultation to determine the location of services such as wheelchair accessible public shelters, cafes and conveniences. The DWA has provided $20,000 worth of new adap-
tive snow sports equipment including three new sit skis at Mt Hotham and in addition, Mt Hotham have arranged for a guest wheelchair to be located in the public shelter at the top of Heavenly Valley to enable guests with disabilities to more easily access facilities out on the snow. Young talent show off their talent in the Freeride Series free style disciplines as a young adult, in which he has competed in over 1000 events. He’s a previous national winner and 10-year world cup free style competitor and his commitment to sharing his wealth of knowledge and sporting skiing ability has been visualised in the Mt Hotham freeski program, which was launched in 2014. In 2014, Mt Hotham Freeski qualified for and has been invited onto the Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA) Elite Pathways Program and is also approved for the Award Winning Edge (AWE) program’s, which can lead young athletes towards the Winter Olympics. Freeski teaches budding daredevils big mountain, slope style, moguls, ski cross and big air (aerials) disciplines are taught in a range of casual freeski programs, camp, holiday and winter-long programs, as well as dry land programs
that develop the skills for competitive and noncompetitive free style skiing. With five events still on the Freeride calendar many Freeski participants will be showing their skills in the competition. TWO rounds of Hotham’s Freeride Series have already been held on the mountain and with five more left in the series there’s still plenty of non-stop action ahead. Held yearly, from July to September the Hotham Freeride Series aims to develop grass roots skiing and snowboarding abilities, and provides a launch pad for young local talent to show off their skills. One of Hotham’s young local skiers, 10-year-old Tristan Rowley, has won back to back championship titles for the last few years in his age category and is hoping to take the title out again in 2015. During the winter Tristan trains at Mt Hotham with Mt Hotham Freeski under the guidance of his coaches, one of them being his father, ex world cup free style skier Martin Rowley. Mr Rowley has lived in the Australian mountains for most of his life and has pursued ski racing and moved into a variety of

A NEW partnership between Ski and Snowboard Australia and the YMCA Falls Creek Nordic Centre has enhanced the range of cross country skiing services for skiers of all abilities. Although Falls Creek has been the official home and National Training Centre for the Australian Cross Country Ski Team since 2004 National Team coaches have joined the experienced from the Nordic Centre offering a focus on healthy lifestyle, family snowfun and winter fitness. Along with the new partnerships there are also a number of new coaches leading the national team this winter. Head coach at the National
Training Centre this year is former Estonian ski sprinter Kein Einaste while Einaste is being assisted by up and coming coach Robert Jones. Also on the coaching panel for the winter is JC Legras, who is the strength and conditioning coach has for the National Team. Einaste who represented Estonia from 2007-13 and competed in the Olympics in 2010 - was ranked in the top 40 in the world for sprinting and was a regular in the top thirty on the World Cup sprint scene – decided to take up the head coaching role after being recommended by a fellow Norwegian coach. “This is my first time in Australia, I thought it would be a good challenge so that was the
biggest reason to come here,” he said. “So far it has been really nice, the athletes are motivated, we have really good training facilities and the skiing trails are good so it’s a good opportunity.” So far the focus for coaches and athletes has been fitness but that will change to technique in the coming weeks while overall Einaste hopes to raise the quality of training and promote the sport even more in the country. Another aim of Einaste is to build on team cohesion and unity. “I want to build a really strong team spirit that gets the most out of everyone,” he said. “I hope everyone in the
team can give something back to the team and that every training session everybody can profit from training with each other.” Working with National Team and Olympic skiers as well as young local talent Einaste has been impressed with what he has seen so far. “There are some really good young juniors coming up and I hope that they really push the senior guys,” he said. “There is a lot with huge potential we just have to show the world what they are capable of. “Phil (Bellingham) has been here all winter training and hopefully he can go one step forward and we can get him really close to the top level in the World Cups.”

Biathlon camps bring out the Easier & Safer best for experience and youth way to Stay Dry MT Hotham hosted three successful Biathlon training camps involving 40 biathletes in the month of July. The firsts of the camps was the first-ever IBU-IOC Development Camp to be held in the country which ran from July 3-12. The purpose of the camp was to continue the development of young athletes from the Oceania Region aged 15-23 as well as Oceania Region coaches. The camp was overseen by Sweden’s Kari Korpela, an experienced World Cup level competitor, coach and member of the International Biathlon Union’s (IBU) prestigious technical committee. A total of 11 athletes, seven from Australia, three from New Zealand and one from Sweden took part in the intensive program which included up to two on-snow ski sessions per day, technical analysis, range practice, endurance training and other outdoor sessions as well as evening training sessions. The second camp which is still in progress is an international camp headed by Youth/Junior World Championships coach Luca
Bormolini of Italy, who has brought several European athletes out with him. Bormolini and the Italian and Swiss athletes are here for seven weeks and are part of the largest contingent of international biathletes and coaches in the country for many years. The third camp was the annual PC Camp headed by Paul Connor, a feature of the Australian season for several years, ten masters competitors took to the local trails and shooting range for a number of days. The training camps were held in the lead up to the Victorian Biathlon Championships which were held at Mt Hotham last weekend while next on the calendar is the Australian Biathlon Championships on August 15-16. Both events work as selection for National Team, Development Team and 2016 Australian Youth Olympic Team. A fourth camp for the winter is the Australian Defence Nordic Camp at Mt Hotham in August, where 80 personnel will strap on the skinny skis for two weeks of Nordic action.

Huskies and mushers ready for sled classic THE Falls Creek Sled Dog Classic is just two days away and you won’t want to miss the spectacular sight that is huskies and their mushers racing through the Falls Creek Village under lights. Celebrating its fifth anniversary this year it is the only alpine village sled dog race in Australia and has once again attracted upwards of 50 mushers and their sled dog teams from all around the country. The race has been a huge tourist drawcard since its inception in 2011 bringing not only sled dog teams to the mountain but crowds of people who want to catch a glimpse of the action. The event has grown bigger every year of its staging after the tireless efforts of Victorian mushers Shaun Butcher and Stewart Cummings who finally managed to convince Falls Creek resort management that running sled dogs through the village would make for fantastic viewing. It has quickly become one of the premier alpine events in Australia due to the support of competitors, spectators and the Falls Creek resort so make sure you are around to see the spectacle that is the Falls Creek Sled Dog Classic this weekend. Heat one gets underway on Friday, July 31, from 5pm at the Windy Corner car park while heat two and the final will be held on Saturday, August 1, starting at 6pm at the Slalom Plaza.

Widespread snowfall has more townsfolk smiling ALPINE resorts weren’t the only ones to welcome snow fall on July 15, as Alpine Shire residents woke to a winter wonderland on Wednesday morning, with snow falling in local townships for the first time in 15 years. The return of snow to local towns forced people, young and old, out into the crisp morning air to capture the activity and views before getting their day underway. Harrietville and the Buckland
Valley received the most snow, believed to be between 2-5cm while Porepunkah, Bright, Wandiligong, Eurobin and the hills surrounding Mt Beauty also received some of the white fluffy stuff. It was the first proper snowfall around the area since May 28, 2000 and started falling just before midnight on Tuesday, July 14 as minus temperatures turned the rain to snowflakes. The Tawonga Gap was also covered in snow causing com-
muters between Bright and Mt Beauty to drive with particular caution on their early morning travels. On the local peaks Mt Buffalo received three times the amount of snow of its much higher counterparts with 30cm, its best snow fall for the season. The addition of 10cm at Mt Hotham and Falls Creek was still welcomed by those on the two mountains and continued to build the resorts’ snow bases.
