Gotcha chair at Mt Hotham spinning. The fresh snow was also welcomed at Dinner Plain boosting coverage on the ski slope and allowing the toboggan run to finally open. In between all that Falls Creek’s status as Victoria’s leading all seasons alpine resort was confirmed in a report by the Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council. The resort was the most significant contributor to the Victorian economy in 2016, also hosting the most number of visitor days and creating the highest number of jobs for the alpine industry. It’s great news for the resort which

will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the mountain’s first lodge in August. In this edition we caught up with Hotham skier and personality Buff Farnell to talk about his 30 winters on the mountain. We also chat to Mt Hotham Free Ski’s Vanessa Rowley about how the program is helping develop future champions in free ski disciplines. Back at Falls Creek and the Multisport Cross Country Ski Centre is now offering a myriad of affordable snow activities and services including ski and snow shoe tours and cross country ski lessons

with multiple French national champion Iris Pessey. The Sled Dog Classic is back at the resort on the first weekend in August with a couple of changes to this year’s racing. Mushers and their huskies will then jump over to Dinner Plain for the Altitude 5000 Challenge the following week. The 26th Pub to Pub cross country ski race takes place on August 5, from The General at Mt Hotham to Dinner Plain. Also in this edition is an update on the Australian Biathlon Association who are enjoying their best winter ever with seven camps in seven weeks.

DRIVING IN SNOW 13 Preparation key for safe trip to and from the slopes

IT seems to have taken week, but the wait is now over. The first significant snow falls of the winter came just in time for the school holidays a week into July. The Snow Gods then turned it on with more fluffy white stuff from July 17 with temperatures as cold as minus seven at Falls Creek. When the Mt Hotham Falls Creek News went to print about 35cm had fallen over a few days taking the average natural snow depth at the resorts to 70cm. The dumping saw the Summit turn for the first time at Falls Creek and the
