The fresh snow was also welcomed at Dinner Plain boosting coverage on the ski slope and allowing the toboggan run to finally open.

In between all that Falls Creek’s status as Victoria’s leading all seasons alpine resort was confirmed in a report by the Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council.

The resort was the most significant contributor to the Victorian economy in 2016, also hosting the most number of visitor days and creating the highest number of jobs for the alpine industry.

It’s great news for the resort which

will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the mountain’s first lodge in August.

In this edition we caught up with Hotham skier and personality Buff Farnell to talk about his 30 winters on the mountain.

We also chat to Mt Hotham Free Ski’s Vanessa Rowley about how the program is helping develop future champions in free ski disciplines.

Back at Falls Creek and the Multisport Cross Country Ski Centre is now offering a myriad of affordable snow activities and services including ski and snow shoe tours and cross country ski lessons

with multiple French national champion Iris Pessey.

The Sled Dog Classic is back at the resort on the first weekend in August with a couple of changes to this year’s racing.

Mushers and their huskies will then jump over to Dinner Plain for the Altitude 5000 Challenge the following week.

The 26th Pub to Pub cross country ski race takes place on August 5, from The General at Mt Hotham to Dinner Plain.

IT seems to have taken week, but the wait is now over.

The first significant snow falls of the winter came just in time for the school holidays a week into July.

The Snow Gods then turned it on with more fluffy white stuff from July 17 with temperatures as cold as minus seven at Falls Creek.

When the Mt Hotham Falls Creek News went to print about 35cm had fallen over a few days taking the average natural snow depth at the resorts to 70cm.

The dumping saw the Summit turn for the first time at Falls Creek and the

Old jackets help share the warmth THE ever-changing fashions of the snow industry mean we often put last year’s ski and snowboard jackets to the back of the wardrobe and replace them with the latest styles.

But instead of letting your old ski gear collect dust why not donate it to a good cause.

Last year XTM’s Heat the Homeless Initiative provided more than 2500 jackets for those in need.

After its initial success XTM have relaunched the campaign again partnering with Humans

in Melbourne and Melbourne I Love You to continue to support those less fortunate.

Mount Hotham Resort Management Board has also got involved with their own collection bin and are encouraging people to drop off their old unused ski gear.

XTM performance founder and CEO Pete Forras said the brand was proud to re-home second hand winter jackets that could bring some warmth to those that need it most in winter. “If you are living on the

streets, a jacket that might be sitting at the back of someone’s closet can make it a little more bearable out there, especially on those really cold and wet nights,� Forras said. “At XTM, we get to work with these innovative technologies and materials to make really cool, highly technical clothes that people want to get their hands on the newest and best of every season. “However the flip side is lots of clothes are being retired early when they still have

plenty of life left in them to do what they are essentially made for - warming bodies through winter. “We want people to give their old jackets a second chance, on the backs of our friends on the streets, as soon as we can.�

Resorts contribute to alpine boom FALLS Creek’s status as Victoria’s leading all seasons alpine resort has been confirmed in a recent report.

The Victorian Alpine Resorts Economic Contribution Study lists Falls Creek as the most significant contributor to the Victorian economy.

The resort also hosted the most number of visitor days and created the highest number of jobs for the alpine industry.

Mt Hotham is also helping deliver an unprecedented growth for Victoria’s economy and jobs sector.

The alpine industry contributed $911 million of Gross State Profit to the Victorian economy in the 2016/2017 winter and summer months.

Commissioned by the Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council the latest study assessed the economic contribution of Falls Creek, Mt

tham with 178,456.

Mt Buller/Stirling had the most visitors across both the winter and summer months but Falls Creek and Mt Hotham lead the way in the average length of stay at 2.7 and 2.6 days respectively.

In winter Falls Creek and Mt Hotham resorts contributed around $290 million to the Gross Regional Product of the Alpine Shire up from $285million in 2011.

Extreme dream for Aussie skier

YOU don’t get much more extreme than this.

Flown in by helicopter to the peak of a remote mountain,with kilometres of vertical, untracked descent, competing against some of the world’s best.

It’s the kind of challenge Falls Creek skier Tom Costa has dreamed of, and will make a reality at the end of this month.

The former World Cup mogulist will carry the hopes of his nation, again, in the World Heli Challenge in New Zealand.

Some 60 of the best skiers and snowboarders from around the world will battle it out - all trying to pick the best line amid unforgiving back country terrain deep in the South Island’s wilderness. “I have wanted to give this type of event a crack for years and this year with the help of my sponsors, Central Snowsports and Deep Powder Tours, I am making it happen,� Costa said.

Born and raised at the base of Falls Creek, in Mt Beauty, Costa and his three brothers learnt to ski young - and fast.

and Tom also competed for his country in freestyle on the World Cup circuit, and at two world championships. “I guess this freeskiing is just a natural progression,� the 32 year old said. “I’ve had the opportunity to ski around the world and be exposed to some pretty extreme terrain..and I just love the challenge.�

But this is his first event. “It’s hard to say how I will fare, but I am definitely very excited about representing my home resort of Falls Creek, and you can bet I will be giving it my very best shot,� he said.

“Obviously this sort of event is not easy to train for, especially in Australia, but the plan is to do as much backcountry skiing as possible and try to get comfortable in the big mountain arena. “Weather permitting, I hope to spend some time on Mt McKay with local skiing legend Steve Lee on his new backcountry tours.�

The report showed an additional $36 million was generated through visitation at Falls Creek and Mt Hotham resorts in summer.

Falls Creek resort CEO Stuart Smythe said the report provides tremendous insight into the significance of the alpine resorts and how Falls Creek continues to grow as an all seasons destination. “The relevance of the resorts to the economy, jobs,

their regions and the state is undeniable,� he said. “Importantly, there is also growth being experience by all the resorts and the sector as a whole. “For Falls Creek, the survey results are recognition and reward for the great work done by stakeholders, the community and associated parties in making Falls Creek the number one Alpine resort in Victoria.�

Hotham free ski carving new path for talented youngsters

By LARISSA KUZEFF WITH Mt Hotham’s raw natural skiing terrain and some of the best instructors working as coaches, Mount Hotham Free Ski has developed a recipe for success.

Established in 2014 by former World Cup competitor Martin Rowley the program aims to provide a learning platform to develop young skiers in all disciplines of freestyle skiing.

The Free Ski development program is based at Mt Hotham over the winter and Melbourne over summer, and is targeted to improve intermediate to advanced skiers between the ages of 7 to 17 years old.

MHFS business development manager Vanessa Rowley said young skiers

in the program were already achieving some outstanding results in competition.

“We are really fortunate that within three years our kids are placing in the top ten in competitions both home and away,” Mrs Rowley said.

“We are a very competitive club and a recognised SSA pathway’s program for World Cup and Winter Olympic athletes.

“The more competitions we can expose our athletes to the better.”

Mrs Rowley said having access to top coaches from Mount Hotham Skiing Company during winter was helping fast track youngsters.

“We have one coach to every six participants and we’ve found that having those small groups is helping to

accelerate progression among our skiers which is showing in results,” Mrs Rowley said.

“Having the top coaches sharing their passion, all with level one accreditation plus the love to ski with young skiers is a big part of that development.”

MHFS also runs one if the biggest dryland programs in Australia, which operates between October and June.

It involves a range of training methods including trampolining, spring board diving, inline hockey, ice hockey, aerial water ramps and most recently the introduction of velodrome cycling.

MHFS also offer scholarships that are provided by one of the program’s major sponsors SnowMonkey and cur-

rently have five talented athletes attached to those.

“The dryland training has so far attracted a number of young snowboarders from all mountains who are training specifically for Victorian Interschool events,” Mrs Rowley said “We have introduced a three-day camp for SSA Victorian Interschools and Nationals which is exciting.

“It involves competition awareness, training and learning specific skills and tools to gain that winning edge.

“We also have two overseas camps each year for all types of mountain skiing, with a 10-day camp based at Hakuba in Japan around Easter.

“This year we have been approved for an ultimate free ski camp in Aspen, Colorado.”

FALLS Creek will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the mountain’s first lodge in August.

From humble beginnings with the first ski lodge Skyline, Falls Creek has evolved into what is now a vibrant European-style ski village and thriving all seasons resort.

To celebrate the resort’s early settlers and the highlights of the last seven decades Falls Creek is throwing a week-long celebration.

Activities will include a re-creation walk from Howman’s Gap in period clothing, some 60’s dancers in Slalom Plaza, a 70’s hotdog style mogul race and themed fireworks, an 80’s disco and a 90’s trivia evening following an afternoon tea with descendants of the resort’s pioneers.

The festivities will culminate in a day party at the Corona bar at QT to celebrate the 2000s and the future.

To mark the occasion the Falls Creek Arts and Heritage Trail has been added to the Falls Creek UserGuide which is a digital guide to exploring the mountain.

There are six stepping stones along the trail where you can look around and take in the stories of the village landscape.

The guides for the trail are the students of our very own Falls Creek Primary School who call the resort home all year round.

“There couldn’t be a more fitting tribute to the early pioneers and settlers than a week long celebration of the seven decades of village life at Falls Creek,” Historical Society chair Karen Smythe said.

The Falls Creek Historical Society thanks The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal for their support with a grant.

They also acknowledge the Falls Creek Tennis and Social Club for their financial support, the children of Falls Creek primary and the Resort Management Board.

The week-long celebrations will commence on Monday, August 7.

For the love of the mountain

BUFF Farnell came to Mt Hotham for the skiing.

Almost three decades on and he’s still coming back, continuing to ski for photographers and filmmakers while managing a lodge and his good mate DJ Eddy. He recently sat down with Mt Hotham Falls Creek News to talk about his love of the mountain.

MHFC NEWS: How long have you been coming back to Mt Hotham?

Buff Farnell: It would be close to 30 winters. My first season here was when I was 21. I had finished a university degree in fine arts and sculpture and decided this was where I wanted to be. I got a job washing dishes at what is now Spiral Stairs and skied during the day.

MFFC NEWS: Skiing has clearly been a huge part of your life since that first season here?

BF: My passion for skiing started when I was about 10 when my mum took me cross country skiing at Mt Buffalo. That first day I just wanted to bomb the hill and fly off jumps and that’s pretty much all I did until my first year at Hotham. I joined the race team as a 21 year-old after seeing guys like Richard Biggins and other ski racers flying around. They were the best on the mountain and that’s what I wanted to do. That first year was really when I learnt to ski properly. I did some racing until I did my knee and then I got more into ski mountaineering and free skiing.

MFFC NEWS: You began skiing for photographers, film

makers, sponsors and Mt Hotham and you still do that today, how did that all come about?

BF: Andrew Barnes who was a legendary ski photographer up here spotted me from the chair on Heavenly Valley one day and waited for me. He came up to me and said I’ve got to shoot an ad for some ski poles and I like the way you ski, will you be in it. I got some poles or a pair of googles out of it and that’s pretty much where it all started. We struck up a relationship and he later introduced me to the guys from Bolle who were my first sponsor. I’ve actually stuck with all the same brands since early on, K2 skis, Full Tilt boots and Quicksilver.

MHFC NEWS: Let’s talk about your good mate DJ

Eddy who you’ve been managing for about 20 years.

How did the two of you first meet?

BF: I used to run a jam night for musos and Eddy was a ski instructor up here that was into music. He used to collect old vinyl hip-hop, soul and funk records. I got him his first gig and ever since then he’s been running the craziest parties. He’s got a real appreciation for a lot of different genres, he loves a good time and is a bit of a larrikin in the whole sense of the word. He likes telling a story and doesn’t shy away from a bit of exaggeration.

Outside of winter Eddy and I do some work for the TAC at festivals promoting road safety for young drivers.

MHFC NEWS: What keeps you coming back to Hotham?

BF: I’ve got a lot of friends

up here but it’s really the mountain and how beautiful it is that keeps bringing me back. I’m looking for a mountain that picks up storms and Hotham is in a perfect spot to do that, the snow is good and it’s steep which suits the type of skiing I like to do.

MHFC NEWS: You’ve skied a lot of different places around the world, where’s the best place you’ve been?

BF: I had a beautiful year in the Indian Himalaya at a place called Manali where a friend was running a heli-skiing business for wealthy clients.

I went there with my brother and a friend and did some ski mountaineering and touring for the winter through to the spring. I stayed for about 10 months and just loved the experience. They were big mountains, incredibly

challenging and dangerous but just an awesome place to ski.

Definitely one of my favourite places I’ve ever been.

MHFC NEWS: Where’s your favourite spot to ski at Hotham?

BF: I love Gun Barrel on Heavenly Valley and then out in the extreme area Lindsay’s is a beautiful run.

MHFC NEWS: I’m assuming you don’t have any plans to stop skiing any time soon?

BF: I’m up here with my family, my two boys who are 13 and 10 and my partner Vanessa, who all love ski.

We’ve managed Player’s Lodge for the past few years now so I don’t have any plans to stop skiing. I haven’t had too many major injuries, I have to stay fit as I get older but I find that part of the challenge.

TOP KNOWLEDGE: Former French cross country champion Iris Pessey is hosting clinics at Falls Creek this winter.

Plenty on offer at multisport cross country centre FALLS Creek’s Multisport Cross Country Ski Centre (MCCSC) is now offering a myriad of affordable snow activities and services.

Located adjacent to the Windy Corner Car Park, the MCCSC’s transformation is headed up by Tony Pammer and Sally Gorman.

Cross country skiers can get tips from multiple French national champion Iris Pessey and also have an opportunity to demo the latest high-tech cross country skis.

Guided snow shoe tours are also available with local identity Geza Kovacs who ‘s running snow shoe tours twice a week or ski tours three times a week.

Also among the changes is a revamped café which will offer a range of healthy snacks and lunches daily.

Tony Pammer said the MCCSC were excited to add a number of new activities particularly free video sessions in the Nordic Bowl with Pessey.

“The video session with Iris will result in instant feedback and participants are invited to watch their skiing prowess on a television monitor in our café,” he said.

“Iris will also host a one hour on-snow clinic at 9am and 2pm daily which will cost is $25 per person.”

With an upgrade to their skiing stocks Mr Pammer said there was an chance for people road test Madshus skis.

“Madshus kis come in four grades, Redline, Nanosonic, Hypersonic, and Terrasocnic, and in each grade there is a skate ski, a wax-able classic and a non-wax called inteli grip or zero,” he said.

“Madshus are also trialling a return to a modified version of the old mohair base for classic skis.”

Mr Pammer said there will be an increase collaboration with the resort’s cross country grooming team to ensure there’s an abundant array of options for all levels of cross country skier.

And lastly for those wanting a guided tour of Falls Creek Geza Kovacs will not only get you out and about but also tell you about the history the resort and share his wealth of knowledge on the alpine environment.

Tours costs are $30 for the two hours or $80 for the six hours.

Ski tours will take place on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and snow shoe tours will be offered every Tuesday and Thursday.

EXPLORING: You can book a snow shoe tour with Geza Kovacs.

BACK Country Sled Tours are offering a unique experience for people visiting Mt Hotham.

Their custom designed snowmobile sled can take four people through the back country of Mt Hotham, complimented by sweeping views of the High Country.

Tours start at the General Store (Bus Stop 6) before meandering down resort access tracks to the snow play area at Wire Plain.

From there you will head into the real back country of Hotham and onto the top of Possum Flat where there is an ideal opportunity to snap a memorable photo.

After a short break to hear a little bit about the history of the Dargo Valley and Mt Hotham it’s down into the snowy tree lined gully and then through some deep stashes of snow, conditions permitting of course.

From there it’s on to Dargo Lookout before pulling up at Snow Stuff Hill and then back to Wire Plain before returning to the General Store.

Duration is 30-45 minutes depending on snow conditions while a lunch tour or sunset tour goes for approximately 1.5 hours.

New for 2017 is the half day Derricks Hut Tour that leaves from the Loch Car Park.

This tour is exceptionally scenic and given its location is highly weather and snow dependent.

This trip must be pre-booked and includes a cooked lunch.

Falls Creek facts by the numbers HERE’S some fun facts about Falls Creek you might not have known.

The resort village sits 1600m above sea level and has an overnight capacity of 5000 beds.

There are also 2000 car parks and when the winter is in full swing about 35 food and beverage and 14 retail and rental outlets to keep you fed, watered and kitted out with the latest and greatest snow gear.

On average each year there are 114 opportunities for you to get out on the 450 hectares of skiable terrain and some 92 runs that you can get to via 14 lifts.

The highest lifted point is the Summit chair at a height of 1780m while the longest downhill run on the mountain is Wishing Well at 3km in length.

With more than 65km of groomed cross country trails, Falls Creek is the home of the sport here in Australia.

‘Big Mac’ aims high for others

By JUSTIN JENVEY A SEVEN year-old boy from Mt Beauty has raised more than $2000 to Disabled Wintersport Australia.

Mackenzie Hull spent the summer and Easter holidays summiting Victoria’s ten highest peaks to raise money for the organisation that assists thousands of individuals with disabilities to participate in snow sports annually.

At Falls Creek on July 16, Mack presented a cheque for $2266 to DWA president Paul Lamb, in front of his tenth peak Spion Kopje.

The idea of Mack’s 10 Peaks Challenge came about after the youngster climbed Mt Bogong in the 2015-16 summer.

While finding sponsors for his Mt Beauty Primary School walkathon the grade two students also began raising money for his own climb.

In January he summited Mt Cope and finished by climbing Spion Kopje in May. Mack’s father Peter Hull said his son was thrilled at his efforts after setting a goal to raise $1000.

“The walking part of it is an achievement in itself but I think his initiative to raise money for another group and a worthy cause was fantastic,” Peter said.

“All these peaks are basically in his backyard and from doing some presentations at school I think he has inspired some of his classmates about the hills that are nearby.”

Mack now has his sights set on a new challenge, riding Victoria’s ten funnest mountain bike trails.

DWA guide training weekend a huge success DISABLED Wintersport Australia carried out their adaptive snowsport guide training at Mt Hotham in early July.

The two-day program taught guides how to assist people with disabilities out on the slopes and also offered specialised training with certificate recognition.

The main focus was to gain and understanding of the role of DWA guides and while training included mountain orientation, safety terrain selection, an overview of adaptive equipment and how to fit it.

An introduction to Sit Skis with lift loading, shadowing and bucketing was also covered along with how to assist a vision impaired person on and off a ski lift.

There were 11 people complete the guide training, an increase from 2016.

Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Major Events and Regional Victoria Danielle Green attended and said that the program was a great way for people to contribute to disabled wintersports.

“I think for us skiers doing a course like this can give you a different perspective on things and hopefully the training will allow more people to experience the joys of the Victorian alps,” she said.

“DWA were very informative and have gone beyond my expectations, they know the mountain well and they really know disabilities - I have great trust in them.”

Also making an appearance over the weekend was vision impaired alpine ski racer Shaun Pianta.

Mr Pianta lost his vision when he was 19 after contracting a super bug that shut down his liver and severely decreased his eye sight while on a holiday in Bali.

He is now classified with the International Paralympic Committee and has been competing since November 2015.

Mr Pianta said that DWA allowed him to find a sport he was passionate about while giving him numerous opportunties as a vision impaired athlete.

Sled dogs return to Dinner Plain for the 24th time A WEEK after the Falls Creek Sled Dog Classic, Dinner Plain welcomes mushers and huskies from far and wide.

Altitude 5000 Dinner Plain Sled Dog Challenge will be held for the 24th time over the weekend of August 12-13.

Australia’s original and most prestigious sled dog race will once again see teams from across Australia competing for victory on the stunning tree lined trails of Dinner Plain.

Man and husky will set out from the village at 9am both days, onto a course that offers plenty of challenges, possible blizzards, snow, ice and fog.

Race organiser and experienced musher, Rob Stevens said more than any other race it tests the depth of the relationship between the musher and their dogs.

“In this particular environment one is totally dependent on their dogs, particularly lead dogs, they need to be both fast and responsive to voice commands, while also able to guide the team out of difficulty.”

The Dinner Plain Sled Dog Challenge is only open to experienced mushers 15 years and older.

They must have competed in at least three dirt based races and are required to have a good knowledge of sled dog rules and etiquette.

Organisers once again invite supporters of the race, both young and old head along to share in the excitement and once again celebrate this annual event.

Defence force member rescued at Falls Creek THE alpine winter had just produced its first major snowfalls of the season when police and emergency services had to come to the aid of an injured Australian Defence Force member on July 8.

With police unavailable at Falls Creek at the time of the incident the Country Fire Authority, Ambulance Victoria and State Emergency had to devise a plan to rescue the army skier.

The man aged in his 20s was part of troop of 25 from Wagga Wagga which had been skiing near Watchbed Creek, about six kilometres from Falls Creek resort, when he damaged his knee.

Falls Creek Resort Management helped with snow gear to support the emergency crews.

It took almost two hours to reach the man near Big River fire trail after receiving the initial call at 12.40pm.

He was carried by stretcher to a vehicle in which he was then taken for medical treatment.

Senior Constable Peter Dilley helped to co-ordinate the rescue effort from Mt Beauty.

He said the group did well to pin point the exact location of the injured skier.

Despite the man having no lifethreatening injuries Senior Constable Dilley said there were time-critical elements to the rescue with the weather closing in and day light fading.

By JUSTIN JENVEY IT’S one of the highlights of not only winter but the year, and the first weekend of August will once again see sled dog racing at Falls Creek.

Nearly 30 teams and up to 150 huskies are expected for this year’s Falls Creek Sled Dog Classic on August 4-5.

The event which has been held since 2011 is unique in that it is the only sled dog race in the country that takes place through a resort village.

Race organiser Vaughan Winther said the classic continues to grow in popularity while the ongoing support of the Falls Creek community was a big reason why mushers keep

bringing their dogs back.

“We’ve maintained a very strong and loyal entry base and we’ve got all our teams returning again plus some new ones,” he said.

“Of the four sled dog races in Australia, Falls Creek is the only mountain where businesses actually sponsor teams and given the cost of getting on the mountain that keeps people coming back.

“It’s our seventh year now and the event keeps growing, the race has become quite well known and people come from all over to see it.

“The mountain reports to us that their visitation up over the weekend and it not only benefits the resort but the accommodation down in Mt Beauty too.”

Regular contenders Peter Dobbs

and Darren Watson will headline the 27 team field that will see two, three, four and six dog classes.

Racing, including the junior challenge, will again take place on the Friday from Windy Corner, out along the Nordic trails before the feature race on Saturday night.

This year’s main event is set to see a change from single starts to dual starts with dogs going head to head up Wombat’s Rambler for the first time.

The fastest teams are expected to finish the 4km course in a little over 10 minutes.

People will be able to catch the action from multiple locations in the village including the finish line in Slalom Plaza.

Mr Winther said spectators will

also have the chance to meet mushers and their huskies prior to the race on Saturday.

“Last year we did a meet and greet for the public with some mushers and their race dogs out the front of QT and we’ll do that again,” he said.

“People can come and have a chat and pat the dogs, that interaction is something a bit different and is something the mushers love and is why the event is so popular up here.

“We’ve started to see people rooting for their favourite mushers and dogs they’ve gotten to know over the years so it’s a really great atmosphere and one we hope to continue.”

Skiers set to tackle a full scale pub to pub challenge

By JUSTIN JENVEY AFTER recent snowfalls, organisers of the Pub to Pub cross country ski race are now unlikely to have to plan a modified event.

In the past, the race from Mt Hotham to Dinner Plain has been called off completely or alternatively skiers have done laps of Wire Plain when there hasn’t been sufficient snow.

But the best snow falls of the season mean the race should see skiers journeying the whole 12km from The General Store to the Dinner Plain village on Saturday, August 5.

Race director Mick Sinclair said the race, now in its 26th year, although it attracts current and former winter athletes was a fun event for cross country skiers of all ages and abilities.

“We normally get between 100-120 skiers, some with a lot of experience and others that are sometimes skiing their first cross country race,” Sinclair said.

“We get a good role up of Hotham crew and quite often defence force personnel who have camps up here at this time of year and get out for a ski.

New ambulance for ski resort MT Hotham ski patrol will have the benefit of a brand new ambulance after its own fundraising drive was bolstered by a 2-for-1 funding grant from Emergency Management Victoria.

The $120,000 vehicle is the same as those used by Ambulance Victoria.

The ambulance has been decked out, sign painted and fitted to ski patrol purposes to be utilised during the winter.

Ski Patrol has been using an older vehicle to transport passengers within the resort and Dinner Plain.

Ski Patroller David Wilson said the efforts of ski patrol volunteers and the support received via a number of events was a big reason behind their successful fundraising.

“A big part of getting the funds was a result of our fundraising event the Big Gig which we hold every August,” he said.

“This year it’s going to be held on August 12 at The General Store where we will auction off a variety of goods.

“The new ambulance means a much better and more reliable vehicle to transport our passengers with more room and the greater accessibility.

“It will also mean fewer costs for the Resort Management Board to service and look after.”

Mr Wilson said the ski patrol will look to raise funds over the summer by offering the ambulance at different events.

“If the medical centre’s ambulance has to go off the hill for a critical emergency, we are the only ones on the hill to provide patient transport,” he said.

Preparation the key to safe snow trip

By VANESSA BURGESS DRIVING in snow and icy conditions can be challenging for even the most confident of drivers and snow-goers are being encouraged to follow some simple rules to ensure their ski holidays are safe and enjoyable.

Bright Senior Sergeant and Alpine Cluster Commander Doug Incoll said the best advice police can give is to be prepared for your trip and drive to the conditions.

“Planning and preparation are the keys to having a safe and enjoyable alpine experience,” he said.

“Travelling on alpine roads in winter can be dangerous, unless special driving techniques are used.

“Driving on roads with snow and/or ice cover not only requires concentration and adept driving skills, but also a lot of patience.

“Keep your cool if stuck in a long queue of traffic, and always follow directions by resort staff, police and road signs; they are there for your safety.”

Snr Sgt Incoll’s tips for driving safely include: Ensure you carry appropriate wheel chains – at all resorts you will be fined for not carrying and fitting chains as required. The fine for no chains is $159.00 – offence of Disobey information on a road access sign’ RR 97(1) but increases to $634.00 within the resort boundaries under the Alpine Resorts Regulations.

Make sure your vehicle

TRICKY CONDITIONS: Ice and snow covering roads can create a hazard for motorists. has a full tank of fuel and ensure your radiator is filled with anti-freeze. If your car runs on diesel, use Alpine Mix. Observe local speed limits at all times, and before leaving the ski fields, be sure to clear any snow from the car roof and windows to avoid creating a hazard to other vehicles.

Drive cautiously with gradual pressure on the accelerator to avoid wheel spin and avoid unnecessary gear changes. Engage first or second gear

on level ground (including automatics) before ascending or descending hills in snow or ice conditions.

Brake gently. Front and rear wheels can lock easily with loss of steering and control.

Keep well behind vehicles in front of you.

Avoid braking when driving around corners Do not drive faster than 40km/h.

With the popularity of back country skiing and snowboard-

ing on the rise, Snr Sgt Incoll said anyone contemplating this activity should undertake a thorough risk assessment.

“Venturing into the back country to experience snowbarding/skiing is becoming more prevalent and with the unfortunate death of a skier at Mt Feathertop in 2011, followed by the deaths of two snowboarders at Mt Bogong in 2014 highlights the inherent dangers of this activity and all precautions need to be taken,” he said.

“Advice should also be sought before contemplating this activity, and a good link for avalanche information that people should check before heading out into back country to ski or board is www. mountainsportscollective.com/ index.”

Preparation is the key to preventing an emergency search and rescue situation and Snr Sgt Incoll said letting someone know where you are planning to go is the first step.

“Giving people an idea of your location is key if you get lost or hurt,” he said.

“Planning your trip carefully, ensuring you have fit for purpose clothing and wearing a level suitable to the conditions, and knowing the signs of hypothermia are a good place to start.

“Carrying a full mobile phone – and if possible a spare battery or portable charging device, and download the Emergency + app which is free for iOS and Android devices.”

Regularly checking weather and snow conditions is a must and taking care of and checking equipment is paramount to ensuring your safe return.

“You also need to be fit to ski and snowboard so make sure your body is prepared for the activity, and if you are planning to head out of the resort ensure you are suitably equipped with relevant gear commiserate to your intended trip,” Snr Sgt Incoll said.

“The bare minimum you should have on you is suitable clothing and wet weather gear, a GPS, maps, food, water, dry clothes and if possible an EPIRB (spot tracker or similar), particularly if you head outside a phone reception area.

“If you do happen to get lost, make sure to stop, seek shelter and wait.”

DEVELOPING SKILLS: Biathlon Australia held successful future stars and high performance camps at Mt Hotham in mid-July

Biathlon stars of tomorrow head to Hotham THE Australian Biathlon Association is enjoying its best ever winter holding seven camps in seven weeks.

After dryland camps in Melbourne and Sydney in late June, Australia’s next potential crop of biathletes recently ramped up training at Mt Hotham.

Mt Hotham is home to the only biathlon range in Australia and in mid-July future stars and high performance camps were held with the largest ever group of athletes.

Biathlon Australia is currently headed up by former Italian biathlete Luca Bormolini with help from Emil Bormetti and Martina Viviani.

Assistant coach Emil Bormetti said the camps were a huge success.

“We did morning runs, shooting and other activities so it was a good introduction to the sport and is something that will hopefully continue.”

Dryland camps in late June involved shooting and fitness technique sessions, roller skiing and sessions for range officials training.

Along with camps at Mt Hotham the ABA has also sent a team to New Zealand for the biannual IBU-IOC Oceania Region Development camp.

The Australian Biathlon Championships are scheduled to take place on August 12-13.

Officially named the Mountain View Hotel, publicans Tim Heuchan and Paddy Subacius took over the venue in October 2015 and have turned the 150-year-old establishment into a must visit. The pair dusted off the dorky beer paraphernalia, spit-shined the menu and made the Wandi what it is today, drawing punters with its good food and extensive beer and wine list.

The menu is big on fresh local ingredients while the chicken parma is one of the best you’ll eat anywhere. There’s also no shortage of local beers and wines while you can generally catch great live music at the Wandi every Sunday no matter what time of year.

While the coffee, made from house-roasted beans is a hit, the menu is packed with great dishes including your breakfast favourites and a choice of curries which set the place apart. If you’re traveling home from the slopes you won’t miss this gem, just look out for the colourful mural of Ganesh, the elephant-headed Hindu god, holding a café latte in one of his six hands.
